I think that's also because it gives a variety of different food options home, you know me, I'm a little picky with food sometimes, so it's good to know that. There's, if I don't like one type of food, there's plenty of other places nearby, the baby have a different flavor and everything else. Rick I really appreciate. A recent poll of registered voters in Anaheim showed majority support for the city officially recognizing a Little Arabia business district. In fact, that movement has been going on now for more than a decade. The city Council has refused to bring it up for consideration. Estaba Arianna is a columnist for the L A times Every Monday. So the maid, The main quarter is gonna be on Brooke First Avenue, starting at La Palma Avenue. So on the northern side of Anaheim and going all the way up to the Garden Grove Anaheim border at Garden Grove Boulevard, so that's the main corridor from all around it, you know, going all the way to like, say Magnolia going even into Euclid and all around you have all these different little Middle Eastern businesses. And that's what's in the neighborhood that makes it a little Arabia. But all of the Middle Eastern businesses that are there and it's been known as this for a while, right? Oh, yeah, I mean, I first heard that I'm a native of Anaheim's I first heard about the district going back into the early two thousands. But even in the nineties I started I had I've seen, especially brokers used to be a really seedy street like a lot of massage parlors. Lot of just nothing and it transformed. You have halal butcher shops. You have clothing stores for women you have. Of course, a lot of restaurants. You have hookah lounges, or at least he did pre Cove it you had tax attorneys really awesome, cool reflection of Anaheim, and even more important, it's the second largest concentration of Middle Eastern businesses in the United States outside of the Detroit Michigan Dearborn area. In the city of Anaheim just hasn't officially recognized it like they haven't put signs up in it and have, you know, officially sort of codified it into the into the city. What would official recognition mean? Besides those other things? The You know the pretty surface stuff? Yeah, I mean, it's it's a cool surface stuff to have a big sign off the 91 that says Little Arabia that where whatnot but honestly what it would be. My opinion would be, you know, an acknowledgment by city officials to all these merchants who have revitalized areas like Hey, congratulations were proud of the folks. We have the city or putting our official in premature on this district that you folks have been calling Little Arabia. For so long. I mean outside, and that's really all that the advocates for the Little Arabia designation are asking for. They're saying to the city. Hey, let the world know we exist. Put us on our on your website. They're not asking for subsidies or anything else like that. The mayor of Anaheim, Harry Sidhu, says he wants everyone to feel welcome and by everyone. He means everybody living in the district maybe who is not of Arabian descent, he says. Many of the businesses and residents Perhaps our Latino. They need to feel welcome as well. Does he have a point in that? No, he has no point whatsoever. Come on, do do the what Hawkins, who live in Korea Town feel excluded by the Koreatown name. Do the you know Salvadorans who live in Little Bangladesh area up in Los Angeles, near of Westlake Village or with Westlake District. Do they feel, you know, unappreciated? No. I mean the the majority. The The The reason people go to that area of brokers are for those Middle Eastern restaurants. And guess what? A lot of Latinos also go to those restaurants myself included. I've been covering those restaurants from 20 years from the Amazing Falafels at Karim's to the Awesome baklava. Used to go to what was it called fresh choice market at the very end a little Arabia because she found the specials. They're far better than any Latino market, and the fruit quality was better. The City Council members there have even campaign going as far back as 2016, saying they support that. Designation. What they're saying right now. They're not saying really much. I mean, you have Jose Marino, the one of two Democrats on the City council who has been advocating for it in his own quiet way for a while, but it's radio silence. I mean, only person really talking about the matters, Harry said Who? The mayor of Anaheim, But the two council members who in the past have expressed support for that little Rabia designation. Steve Fassel, who's a Republican, and Jordan. Brandon is a Democrat. They're not saying anything at all, and the people have been pushing this. Have been the merchants but specifically a group called the Arab American Civic Council. They've been at this for about a decade. I remember editing a story about their push. This goes back. Jeez, about seven years ago, and here we are today. I mean, it's such a no brainer. It just boggles my mind that and I'm just will not acknowledge it. Well, I mean, what's behind the resistance? Do you think Hey, You know what? I don't know. That's what I'm trying to think. Because the you know the this idea that people somehow feel excluded. It's weak sauce. It's a weak sauce. Excuse the pole that the Civic Council along with the U. S. Immigration Policy Center, U C. San Diego, they showed. Actually, a lot of people have never heard of the Little Arabia name. Only about 9% of those polled in these are all registered voters. Voters in Anaheim. On Lee about 9% of people were opposed to the idea. Everyone else either approved there said. Like, Well, you know, either way, I don't really care. So it's a no cost situation. You have to put up the signs. And usually it's the merchants who pay for that. And all of sudden, Anaheim can tell the rest of the world. Hey, we have Arabs and you know when we talk about Middle Eastern, we're talking about everything from people from restaurants from Tunisia. Going over to Iran, which, technically, of course not Arab, to Palestinians and all of that stuff. It's a beautiful place, and it's sad that my hometown doesn't want acknowledge it officially. I think right after the attack in New Zealand, you were talking about the vulnerability that Muslims felt and also worshipers of all religions, so I mean is this Ramadan feel different? You know, it's the first time ever. This was last week where I've been born raised in this country thirty years old to wear a brief thought when my head and said, well, we'd be safe in our mosques during this. This was after the lettuce latest tragic shooting in the San Diego synagogue, six months after the tree of life synagogue in Pittsburgh and just like you said two months after the terrorist attack in New Zealand. And so the fact that that thought even creeps up in your head as an American citizen living in America for the first time in your life to shows, you the sobering reality of the times that we live in with the rampant rise of white nationalism and hate against religious minorities. Ethnic communities, and the fact that we can't feel safe in our houses of worship. But that being said, there's a resilience and hope in an optimum among these religious communities and most Muslims still feel optimistic about Ramadan. And the fact that you know, these terms like fudge, which is the morning prayer or Siri. What is the meal that we just ate like an hour and a half goes now trending next associ-, and Danny the mother of dragons in America. So it's like holding onto all the traditions that you're familiar with to deal with kind of these fears that that are that are new and very serious, and that is a way of responding to tragedy and crisis also being resilient and moving forward and loving your family loving or community and fasting, and, you know, opening your fast at you know, I hop if you have to. I hob sometimes sometimes you need to do an emergency pancake dinner or sometimes in the morning, your your crunch. And so you go to hop. But also one thing I want to mention how America's becoming more inclusive. There's something called dine after dark dot org. Where local restaurants here in Virginia or actually staying up late or getting up early in the morning to accommodate many, Muslim Americans, and it's good for business. And it just this is something I didn't have growing up, David. And it shows you despite the tragedy and the cows and twenty nine hundred America majority of people are actually wellbeing Muslims and saying, hey, this is part and parcel of the American fabric. And we'll stay up a little bit late and make some extra money to feed hungry or some hanging Muslims a while. So I mean, I happened at nothing wrong with. It was a sign that that was the one of the only options. And now that's changing you think it's a good sign. It's not just I have a Middle Eastern restaurants. Got restaurants got South Asian restaurants. And like always said diversity is good for America because it makes Marika tastier writer and playwright was a hot Ali.
