We currently have some pockets of heavy rain traveling through Passaic and Sussex, Morris and Warren counties with a lot more heavy rain and strong thunderstorms over eastern Pennsylvania right now. These storms generally have a history of producing between one and two inches, a total rainfall over Pennsylvania Any other time. We'd hardly talk about that. But after Ida's deluge a week ago tonight It's worth ringing some alarm bells to the potential for flooding. And to be clear. This is not another idea. Rivers may rise a few inches, but that's it. The flash flooding picture is a bit more precarious since we go through the overnight Heavy rain falling on saturated ground could lead to big puddles. "Something? Not many. Not many. You know, they're too busy, You know, buying their second home in Beverly Hills or something like that. So very sweet. All right, let's check in with our pal W. O R. Weather Channel. Meteorologist raced Agent Ray, I have to apologize for something. Family said You were a little ticked off at the earlier on in the program. You said something about the tornado possibilities. And then I asked you about the tornado, and you thought I wasn't paying attention. But that's not true. I was losing the hearing in my left headphone because of a connection here. So that's believable. Got the old the old the old connection in the in the in the headphone thing? Yes. Get that one. Yeah, That's what was going on. So I I apologize. Right? All right. So tell us what? What's it gonna look like as we roll on into the day? How many inches of rain are we going to get here? Wow. You look out right now. It's probably raining pretty hard in some spots, and, um, this is just I'm going to call it kind of the precursor to what's coming right now getting into Nassau County, some pretty heavy rainfall, even around Staten Island and down to the Queen's This little batch of rain pushing through there is a bit of a letup both southwest of that He's Brunswick and down your Trenton. But that stronger storm we talked about earlier now has produced the Marine warning out there Egg Inlet east of the Jersey shore. They're just offshore, too, so that storm is going to move away and back behind it very heavy rainfall in through Pennsylvania and North Jersey. That's all heading north Northeast and as I mentioned all morning Might get a little bit of a break here briefly, But the rain is going to come down to beat the band in eastern Pennsylvania, most likely for the remainder of the morning. Now, our heaviest rain most likely coming as we get in through this evening and through tonight, Flash flood watch. And then, as the rain comes down tonight, most likely numerous advisories and warnings when he gets the advisories and warnings that's when you have to take action. That's when you have to seek higher ground or looking at rain that may come down an inch an hour or more and totals totaling about 3 to 5 inches of rain, maybe more in some spots. So great. Are we going to get some flash flood warnings? What you saying? Very we just might. Well, wait. 30. Thanks. Yes. Yeah. Eastern Pennsylvania. Is that gonna get yes, Yes. Heavy rain. Eastern tested, Vania. Um, probably a dozen advisories right now. Yeah, we we could expect to see some even across here. The five boroughs. There'll be water where it usually isn't. This is going to be, uh, unusual event. Whether Prediction center who issues these, um flash foot outlooks. They've got a very likely painted across our area that there will be flash flooding in. They only issue that high the level of flash flood threat about a dozen times a year. So it's not often I'd be prepared to do what you can, uh, take the warning seriously the flash flood warnings because you can't get away from the water once it starts coming in or coming down. So good night. Maybe just to stay put hunker down and get ready for looks to be a pretty unusual rain event coming in with what's left of Ida, which is quite a bit Watch a warning. Which one's worse I forget. The warnings are worse. A watch means that the potential potential that's why I've got to watch now when you get a warning or a flood advisory, that's when flooding eminent or is occurring, and it's a pretty good bet It will be occurring in some spots. Many, many places, I think All right. Thanks, Ray. W Omar. Weather Channel Meteorologist Raised Agent whose word every word I hang on. Thank you. Right. Take that. Yeah. Mike. Drop. Yeah, There's news time at 9 30 from job are like, good morning, Joe. Would it be redundant to say they were expecting up to five inches of rain today from the Hurricane Eider For the first time? I've heard of it. Yeah, I'm sure. You didn't hear any anyway. Um, um big concern places like Mont Ville, New Jersey. The mayor, There is Frank Cooney. He says.

"Though. Heading into your Hudson River crossings alters that parking rules are and if Fact for this Wednesday our next traffic updates coming up in 10 Minutes on 7 10. W o R two minutes Now, after five o'clock time for weather with meteorologist race Did you get the weather channel? And we're all braced for what's left of Ida this morning, Ray, tell us about it. Alright, Joe. Well, we're going to have what looks to be multiple inch rain event. Dan. That's going to increase the flash flood threat, actually, very likely that we will get flash flooding, especially as we go on through late today and tonight, Believe it or not, That's when the heaviest rains could have fall. Although we are seeing rain over spreading the area right now, this is just Kind of like round one. And Joe the Weather Prediction center. The part that covers of flooding. Let's just say that they put out these outlooks. The 14 Flooding likely or the highest category only gets put out about a dozen times a year, So it's not very often we get into a situation where that flooding becomes likely. And I think, especially out across North Jersey in eastern Pennsylvania, where They've had the heaviest rain from previous storms just a week two weeks ago, That would be the best chance so we're in some of this rain right now, some of it heavy down to the southwest of us. This batch does have a little bit of a break. But that break is all the way down near Baltimore. So we've still got quite a few hours ago this morning and kind of a steady to moderate rainfall, even at times. It may come down heavily in some responsible. We may get a break as we get into at least a part of the afternoon before we start to see the rain pick up again and then rain tonight heavy at times, especially as we get into the early part of tonight. Today's high 74 Tonight we'll drop the 61 shallow should end tomorrow morning, but not before anywhere from 3 to 5 inches of rain on average will be some spots that get more will be some that might get a little bit less job, But I think there will be flooding and it may not just be confined to the areas that normally flood during a rain event, so some spots may see flooding that. We get when we get these heavier rain event, so we'll let everybody be prepared for that did not cross water covered roadways. Joe We didn't have all this rain that was falling from on re especially across North Jersey. Maybe it wouldn't be as bad as it sounds, but I do think in some spots. We are going to have quite a bit of flooding going on. And then finally we'll get back into the sunshine by tomorrow afternoon will go on That road. I talked about yesterday Run a great weather. Friday. Saturday Sunday Monday temperatures in the upper seventies and mid seventies during the daytime hours and pleasant nights in the humidity joke is going to go away to so heavy rain will start coming in. Even though we'll get this batch of rain this morning. Maybe even a few thunderstorms mixed in It does look like the bulk of the rain is going to come as we get into the nighttime hours tonight. The Mystery Of The Pennhurst Asylum
"The eastern pennsylvania institution for the feeble minded and epileptic later called pinehurst asylum was originally established as a facility for the disabled opened in nineteen o eight. The property contained in array of buildings all scattered around large tracts of farmland in chester county. Thirty miles outside of philadelphia though it might sound like it was designed for care and comfort. The reality was anything. But the institute was first created to house intellectually and developmentally disabled people alongside those who suffered from epilepsy but this strategy was unwise as such patients had very different needs. What's worse is that. Many of the institutions goals were based on the nineteenth century eugenics movement proponents of the movement believed that the human gene pool should be protected and anyone deemed. Genetically inferior. Should be prevented from reproducing by forced sterilization or segregation from the rest of society. For this reason. People with certain kinds of disabilities whose families could not care for them were sent to penn hearst. Most of them came as infants or children. Girls and boys are separated into different buildings. So there wouldn't be any sexual mixing in the decades since the institution closed a slew of modern day rumors claim that penn hurst carried out forced sterilizations on its patients. But while sterilization did occur at similar institutions in the united states. There was actually no record of it at pinehurst. Rumors of the institute's horrific procedures ran rampant. The last perhaps this is because the hospital was shrouded in an era of mystery it operated almost completely independently of the outside world. It had its own power plant and produced its own. Food and supplies were brought in by a special rail. Line pen hurts was designed so that no one from the outside could get in but more importantly so that no one on the inside could ever get out. Georgie was carrying a stack of folded sheets toward the finish piles. When he noticed a girl arguing with an orderly. George stopped in his tracks. She had long shiny hair and was pointing a finger directly at him confidently shouting and screaming. He was instantly captivated and continued to watch her but eventually to more orderlies came over to give her a shot. And take away georgie side. Good things never lasted. Long at penn harris georgia's mother had left him there when he was only three. He never knew why not what he done or where she'd gone he'd been stuck in this place for twelve years and he knew it like the back of his hand. He knew that when the girl got taken away it was the last he'd see of her or so he thought The next day georgy walked into the laundry building at his heart nearly stopped there. She was if he someone else. He could've tapped on her shoulder and introduced himself but as it was he could barely manage breathing and walking at the same time. Georgie said down in front of his pile of sheets and started cursing himself for being so shy and that was when someone tapped him on the shoulder turned. The girl was standing behind him. A fitted sheet in her hand. She has georgie how to fold it. Her name was kerry. No one was happy to be. A pen harassed. But carrie was indignant about it. She said she didn't belong there. That was why she'd been fighting with the orderly. There was no way she was going to spend the day slaving over an ironing board if she wasn't getting paid the orderly at said that barbital injection might change her mind but it obviously didn't soon george bush love. He used to find laundry duty tedious. But now it was the only thing. He looked forward to because laundry. Duty meant seeing carry a few weeks. After they first met george carey was sitting on a low stone wall outside the laundry carried. Turn to him with a frown. She asked to launch. She was a burden after her parents died. Her guardianship went to her uncle.

Florida has had a surgeon Republican voters it is run by a Republican governor. I expect Donald Trump to win in Florida by one. Or 2%. Of course I could be wrong. This is just my prediction. Similar situation in Ohio. Mr Trump is running ahead in many polls there. I do expect him to win the Buckeye State. Pennsylvania. I can't call it I think Joe Biden hurt himself when he said that he was going to ban all fossil fuels. But Eastern Pennsylvania. Does not like Donald Trump. So this one could be a mess. I hope it isn't But it could be And Pennsylvania is controlled by Democrats. Polls say Georgia is clothes. I don't really believe that. I think Georgia will go for Trump. But North Carolina is definitely razor thin right now, and Donald Trump needs both of those states. So North Carolina usually leans conservative. In the end, I think North Carolina is going to go Republican for both the Senate and the president, but I could be wrong about that. Florida has had a surgeon Republican voters it is run by a Republican governor. I expect Donald Trump to win in Florida by one or 2%. But Eastern Pennsylvania does not like Donald Trump. The Senate race there is right now, the polls say the Democrat is in front, but he's been tainted by scandal. In the end, I think North Carolina is going to go Republican for both the Senate and the president, but I could be wrong about that. Iowa and New Hampshire to very small states, But they could make the difference. Iowa I see going for Trump New Hampshire for Joe Biden, Wisconsin and Michigan. I don't know, I think was constantly go for Biden. But Michigan is a lot of anger in Michigan. So I'm going to call the state's now but they are very vital. Minnesota. Biden, Arizona, I think going to go for Trump, Nevada. Almost impossible. A call so you can see a razor thin clothes. This is a week. From the vote. 270 electoral votes are needed to win. It's kind of come right down to the final day. I'm Bill O'Reilly and I approve that message by actually writing it disagree. I want to hear from you, Bill. "But of course, as you can guess she was dead. That's the visit the circle. I was trying to think of songs of the great Beyond. It came that down to that, or Dickie Lee's Laurie. So I think you went out on that choice. The visit was a flipside of Ah, flop the circle did in 1967 on Columbia. And some night we'll talk about the history of that group for Eastern Pennsylvania College kids. Hoo! Ah ran into Brian Epstein and wind up opening for the Beatles. But we are talking with Vincent Jenna Vincent Jenna dot com and as I was saying moments ago, I am very intrigued with the line. I think I know where it's going. But Vincent, tell us that people don't believe what they think they believe. Absolutely, and I had briefly mentioned it in the first half. By talking about the defence mechanisms that the brain creates, because of those two high functions and the function of protecting us and protecting us against the emotional pain as well. The brain goes through its own processes in order to do that, that we're unaware of So what people have to understand that Only 2 to 5% of your entire mind. Is in conscious awareness 2 to 5%. That means 95 to 98% of the entire human mind is in unawareness. The majority of the mind. Most people have no idea what's going on in there. They have to understand a lot is going on in there, and it's all based on what we formed. His beliefs are first head of beliefs from when we were young, growing up. And then what the brain is doing to shield those set of beliefs. I call them the I'm not, you know, Like I said earlier. The I'm not good enough. I'm not lovable. I'm not deserving. Well, that's very painful to walk through life that way. As the brain begins to develop and you get older. It will go through the process of shielding you from those beliefs. Freud, Sigmund Freud came out with a 10 different on I never remember them. Defense mechanism is not all of them. Denial, repression, suppression sublimation. You know all of that projection rationalization, intellectual ization. And what he was talking about is your brain will go through these processes to hide those beliefs. So, okay, So what does that matter? You become an adult, and now you're using and working from your adult mind, not your child's mind. But we are more than just physical being. Spiritually being having a physical experience. What does that mean? Where energies And we're tapped into energy and we manifest our lives, but we don't manifested from our conscious thinking. We manifested from that subconscious unconscious thinking deep down, so when you're wanting to attract a good relationship You're ready. 00 I'm going to find my might in shining armor. I'm going to find my princess, right? I'm going to have a family. Oh, it's going to be great. I can finally move out of my parent's home, right? All of those. Those thoughts, right? And you're putting that energy out there, but before it leaves you That little kid inside, deep down, turns around and says. Oh, you're not gonna find anybody worthwhile. It's not gonna work out. You're not lovable. That's what you're really believing. But you don't hear that. But then all of a sudden you attract the relationship in the beginning. It seems great. It seems wonderful. It seems fine. You're all getting along because you're going through the courtship phase. And somewhere down the line all the sudden it goes down with the Your partner's not acting the way he is She you thought And what you need. Your emotional needs aren't being met. And like, attracts like so the both of you that were hungry for love are now with each other and starving the death because nobody hasn't to give to each other, and you wonder why it breaks apart. But you expected it to break apart. Because the part that you thought was controlling your life. Your conscious thoughts weren't You're unconscious Thoughts are controlling your life. And that's why people don't believe what they think they believe, because when they're going to their boss and asking for that raise, and he says no. You think it's the boss's fault? When in reality you're sitting there and saying at the same time you're asking? I'm not going to get the raise. I don't deserve the race. No, not like the other guys. They're here all the time. I don't think you don't know you're saying that. But you are Because the outcome is negative. So the outcome of your life actually let you know truly what you believe about who you are deep down. And it gives you the answers as to what you need to work on. What's interesting about what you're saying is, it explains why the quote unquote law of attraction and the secret All those things don't work for many people. That's right. Oh, I wrote a book about that that I'm waiting. I'm praying to get public. It's called God It's not working. And and why I title That is no matter what these people they're trying and they're studying the law of attraction and they go to seminars and they go to spiritually centers. But they still end up. Thank God it's not working. Yeah, And the reason is Because they don't believe what they think they believe. But they don't know it. And here in lies, lies lies The problem. How do you discover this? And also what do you do about it? Well, the discovery is easy. I happen to mention that to look at your life. Do you have anywhere you want? If you don't Then you know what you're believing. If you don't have that that love of your life because you don't believe your lovable if you don't have the finances.

People Not Numbers
"Welcome back to win the gate as we all await for the angel of death to pass over our houses and spare us much of the ancient Israelites. Did in the book of Exodus. You know the tenth plague. We take the time to remember a couple of people in the horse racing community who unfortunately were not spared specifically in the harness racing world. John Brennan was a four decade owner and trainer starting up at the harness track in Saratoga and then at the meadowlands in New Jersey he died on Tuesday march tenth at the age of sixty nine. Just as much of the world started shutting down. He was the first cove nineteen victim overall. Who LIVED IN THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY? John Brennan lived New Jersey but had recently been working as an official at yonkers. Raceway in New York where he came into contact with trainers carmine. And Vincent FUSCO carmine age. Fifty Five Vincent Age fifty three and their mother and sister all died from the virus within six days of each other carmine Vincent and their sister Rita were three of eleven fusco children. Carmine FUSCO lived and trained standard breads in eastern Pennsylvania and like John Brennan and New Jersey Fusco was the first resident of Pennsylvania to die from the virus to put into perspective. What these deaths mean in the context of the corona virus. We welcome in here to win the gate. Mark Ford who is also a trainer and the president of the standard bred breeders and Owners Association of New Jersey. What did think as you heard of John? Brennan staff and that of the whole Fusco family to start with John job better than I were very very dear friends and he was one of these guys. Was I CONTI? Act like every day he was going to the hospital about something and you know after a while you sort of like put it off. He said what's John You know. It's no big deal but he been sick for it. Seemed like forever and finally we were supposed to travel on Friday going to be. Usda meetings in Columbus. And I talked to him on Monday at two o'clock in the hospital and the money was also the day of reckoning here with all these arrests being made and He was pretty upset over that you know a lot of the people we knew were involved in such and Tuesday morning. They've got another call at six o'clock and John died during the night so it really it really put things in perspective and really they really should be because he was such a dear friend and essentially dear friend of the industry to he was In a paddock. Every night at offers and it'd be horsemen had for years and years and towards the last two years he'd been the horse runs at the office and a USDA actor for the last twenty years or more and John was always there fighting for the horsemen and not only a real good friend and a really really good guy and I'm sure that they understood. We'll certainly miss him and It's been it's been one shock. You know for everyone so I certainly remember watching him drive at the meadowlands when I was growing up and remember when he was part owner and trainer of sugar trader. Who in two thousand and three finished runner up in the sport's biggest race. The HAMMEL Tony and one. Another leg of the trotting triple crown. The yonkers trot sugar trader. Crank it up at shooter trader effortlessly on now to take the lead solicitor. Hanauer given way on tours locked in third but as they come towards the top of the stretch and sugar trader has given them the slip. It's sugar trader by five. The forty nine edition of the front goes to sugar te traitor and I believe John. Brennan was on the Board of the standard bread owners of New York for more than three decades. What was he like as an administrator? He knew everything was going on and he was he. He's a true friend of the Horse. Didn't have a big family. Didn't have any kids. But he spent a Lotta time with the horsemen and more or less adopted a lot of their kids and you know he was. He had lots and lots of friends around and they just like he was. He was truly wanted to shock you. You just can't believe that you know he's saying he's not around. I come to New York. He was the first person if people that you meet on the backstretch man. He always said not big stable. But you don't have the ten or twelve all the time and was always was always there and it's Just terrible Shaw Mark. Ford of the Standard Bread Printers and Owners Association of New Jersey is with us here on indicate one of the sisters of carmine and Vincent fusco said to everybody. This is a virus to us. It's a person. What do you know of the effect these deaths have had on the FUSCO family or dear friends with carmine FUSCO for years and years? We traveled together. We he was ten of mine for for years and trillion our good friend and You know you've been in New Jersey. This is a blue collar family that has been working in the horse business for years. I mean the mother father three or four of their brothers and sisters and was just you know like you can't imagine freeholder Jersey off the festival family there's just so many of them and Vinnie Ginsburg is whether leading drivers freehold us. A few of and It's just it's one thing to lose a member of their family. I mean very very tight met brothers and sisters but I know a couple of years ago. They lost their father for for national causes. And it was such a you know such a big deal. But now you use parminder matriarch for the family and then his mother and sister and it just keeps going and then Vinnie was probably You know as long as they're just New Jersey people that I've been around forever and ever expected to be going anywhere else and have you understand this. I mean it's just it wipes you know like a big big part of your A big part of you that you know pop the Horse Population and as well as that. They're all good friends to an exam for personally. It's been a terrible we command you know. Life must go on but It's not GonNa be near as easy as well. I'll get to that in a second just so our listeners. Know carmine FUSCO SERVED A five-year ban starting in two thousand twelve from multiple drug offenses involving his horses. Much like Rick detro- in the thoroughbred world. Now as you know several thoroughbred tracks have continued to run with limited personnel on site during this pandemic with deaths actually occurring in the harness world. How are people and tracks coping and moving forward? It's it's just one of those things where this has happened so fast. I know it's been two weeks now since this happened but people were walking around the days. I mean it's just rocked our whole world. I mean it's one thing to cancel the racing where it none of us. Hannity income but this is real. I mean like you look for them. It's hard to believe that on my bus goes not maybe year anymore or five or six of the people that we deal with literally on a daily basis. Aren't going to be here anymore and It's just devastating. I mean I don't think people talk about a dose of reality. I mean for one thing if someone was killed in a car wreck I mean you could more and you can get over it or the family was You know if the whole fusco Harry was killed on a for instance a car wreck or a house fire or something or you. Can you think it over and you know that's the way life is? It's terrible we have to go on but with this stuff. It could be one of us tomorrow. I mean it's I mean people. I'm sure to take this theory seriously at all. Or maybe they're still not taking it seriously enough but these are things that we have to deal with. And it's this is a tremendously big deal because you know it could be any one of us tomorrow or the next day. It's it's serious stuff. I don't think you've seen media. Mark Ford President of the Standard Bred Breeders Own Association of New Jersey. Thank you so much for your time and for your candor and we hope that all of you can find peace and stay safe. I thank you very much and We'll be in
Citizen science project is changing the climate conversation
"White Husic is a biology professor at Moravian College in Pennsylvania. She studies how climate change affects forest habitats in the mountains of Appalachia and had been thinking a long time about how to engage people in conversation about climate change and a state that has a long history of fossil fuel use especially in rural areas. Where it's kind of controversial so in two thousand ten US started the eastern Pennsylvania phonology project. She has local residents to submit data about when they saw certain flowers. Blooming trees leaping out and birds returning in the spring. I thought it might be interesting to think about. What are people noticing in their backyards? Perhaps a way to start a conversation. That wasn't politicized right from the beginning. She says the project helped her build relationships with local residents and organizations who now trust her expertise she's been invited to speak to fishing and hunting groups and she says people call up to talk about what they're observing in the region and they contact me to say. Hey I noticed this change. Do you think it's due to that stuff? You work on is almost like this. Don't say climate change but they're talking about it and asking about it which I think is a huge change from just a few years

Invasive Species: We Asked, You Answered
"Mattis affair here with NPR. Science correspondent. Dan Charles. Hey Dan hi so Dan recently on the show you brought to us. A story of a bug called the spotted lantern lantern flights and insect and invasive. One that has it's been spreading across eastern Pennsylvania and into surrounding states They're pretty big. Little bit like cicadas. They jump more than they fly not dangerous to people but definitely dangerous to some things like vineyards trees so at the end of that episode. We said if anybody listening has an interesting invasive species this is where they live they should write us about it and A lot of people did indeed. We heard about cane toads and Australia do not eat not good Etxeberria muscles in Nevada Lake Mead. How in the world did they get their stowaway? bivalves native Russia we heard about Asian Carp Brazilian pepper. Trees Hemlock Lock woolley Adele Jade so many plants and critters in so many places. They should not be Dan so today. Straight from our INBOX. We're going to talk about three three of them. Three invasive species all which reveal how delicate and complicated ecosystems can be
Vineyards Facing An Insect Invasion May Turn To Aliens For Help
"Bug recently arrived from China is munching its way across eastern Pennsylvania from there. It's poised to spread across much of the country. Killing trees and grapevines finds so scientists are considering something drastic importing other insects the bugs natural enemies from the place it came from NPR's. Dan Charles has the story. I was walking around the park near Allentown Pennsylvania and I didn't even notice the bugs at first then heather leach arrived the insect expert Berg from Penn state but if you take under these leaves sure enough they're climbing up underneath the ivy and then I realized they're all over. This tree spotted lantern flies. A marching column of gray bugs each one about an inch long black spots on their wings sucking sap from the tree. They're kind of ugly especially. When there's thousands of them you'll start to poke at them and you'll see how strong hopper there you see that they've just take off could be entertaining. You see a lot of kids running around playing with them trying to stomp on them spotted lantern flies. I showed up in the United States five years ago right here in Berks County. Nobody knows exactly how some eggs probably hitched a ride on shipping containers across the specific. Now there are hordes of spreading across Pennsylvania and beyond chances are they'll eventually reach most of the country. It's an insect that lays its eggs on on anything including things that get transported hops onto vehicles and can hold on. They don't seem to have any natural enemies here but they found lots of trees with sapped that they like. They've got a buffet out here if they can eat all of these plants and they don't have anything that's down so they're having a good time. They're having a party right. Heather Leach gets panicked calls for people with swarms of lantern flies on their houses or their trees. She tells them don't freak out. These bugs won't bite or sting but but they're not a joke either they really can destroy fix and the people who are seeing this first our vineyard owners like John. Landis vine crest winery west of Allentown uh-huh going. Landis is pressing grapes smiling. Harvest is a good time. He says but then I asked him about the Lantern Flies Anthony Turns series. We've never had a situation like this and forty years. If you start to decimate your vineyard we can cause people to go out of the wiring business. It's actually actually killed funds. Oh yeah definitely kills wise. We walk out into the Vineyard and sure enough. The section next to the woods is infested with lantern flies a lot of vines. It's our dead already. From last year's attack we had lantern pipe just kind of pouring out of these trees last year invading this area here and then down on this hill vineyard owners can spray insecticides protect their crop but that's costly and it can kill helpful insects like bees and ladybugs also it doesn't help with the bigger problem. The damage lantern flies can cause to whole ecosystems leach scientists or worried. They might kill off some trees in forests were also starting to see early indications of displacement of other insects and as a result displacement of birds as well but maybe she says if the problem came from China the solution Russian could to you see back in China. The lantern fly has natural enemies that hold it in check tiny wasps so small you can barely see them scientists from the US this department of Agriculture have brought two kinds of these wasps to the United States. They're under quarantine and a couple of USDA labs like the beneficial insect introduction laugh in Newark Delaware to USDA scientists. Amanda Stout and Kim homer lead the way into the quarantine room. We're all suited up in white overalls head to toe now. Next door is high security this quarantine zone. It's filled with these environmental chambers. They look like big refrigerators. homer opens opens one up and points me towards something in sealed containers. There's a little white thing about a quarter of an inch long with a dark in there that just the cocoon. This is one stage in the life cycle of a lantern flight killing wasp. The wasp lays eggs inside baby spotted lantern flies called nymphs the eggs hatch into larvae that feet on the nips and kilter so maybe they could do this outside. The lab in Pennsylvania's forests sounds kind of crazy releasing an invader to fight another invader but homer says really it could work. There are many many examples of successful and safe introduction of natural enemies. He says it's best when the natural enemies a specialist when it only tax invasive species you're trying to control so now he's trying to figure out whether these wasps only lay their eggs in lantern flies or if they attack. North America's native insects to getting answers. We'll take years in the meantime. The lantern flies will keep on moving. Dan Charles N._p._R. News.

$273 million lottery winner has Good Samaritan to thank
"I think he's Philipsburg right across the river from eastern Pennsylvania Phillipsburg, New Jersey who just hit the mega millions jackpot. Mike were ski couldn't have been more of a slacker a deadbeat. Yes. Lifetime unemployed. He basically said I've always been a bomb, but now going to be a beach bum. I'm telling you. If you talk about a guy was so lucky. So lucky let Mike in his own words, describe what transpired to make him. Now, a guy who probably is to want to leave New Jersey as Murphy's raising the attack on the millionaire one hundred sixty two million lump song day again hundred and sixty two. Guber is dressed next. Stop will be the North Carolina, South Carolina. He'll be buying a NASCAR team. Anyway, let suicide in to the winner. Here recently got divorced in October. And I followed her around for fifteen years and she worked and I did. Also since I've been back and trying to find a job in jersey. Nobody hires me because I don't have a history. Fifty four year for job that I felt was worth it. And they only my phone's been blinking all kinds of things never got an interview in a year and a half yesterday. I got my first interview job interview. And I had to deny before even when he's fifty four years old. He has been following around his wife who works at a utility company. She's not making millions of dollars. I mean, he's just he's above working for a year and a half. He refuses to get a job yet. He's going to take her money. So they've they've recently been divorced. She not only had to pay him a lump sum again prior to finding out that he won the lotto, but she has to pay spousal support. So the question is is this guy going to tell her I'm gonna give you back not only the lump sum that you gave me after you've been taking care of me for the last fifteen years. But in addition to that, please don't pay me spousal support. And I'm actually going to give you some money. You think he's going to do that? So having one two hundred seventy three million then. Government obviously takes at least half of that with what he's left with. He should not only pay back all the spouses support. He was living off of fifteen years. She admits I have a job for fifteen years. I was pimping off my wife, but sweetener up to because she stuck with him. Do what had to be some really hard time. Well, I I was married to somebody who just couldn't get a job. They just nothing was good enough for them. And it is really, you know, and I had to pull me got divorced. I had to pay him a nice fat lump sum, and I sit there, and I go my God. Spousal would. I had. No, I didn't pay spouse. I paid a lump sums I never had to talk with this guy again. Wow. This is the same guy that had a child that. I never knew about I know, but still on this show Mason. Whereas we don't sit. There are some women. It's mostly men who play spousal support. But there are some women now. Oh, yeah. Who end up being told by the judge guess what not only am I the divorce here. But you're going to have to support the guy who was your husband who did nothing. Nothing ten years fifteen years. He just sat there. He couldn't find a job Philip Shwe. Yeah. I mean, it's so, ladies and gentlemen, is the guy that's just walked away with one hundred sixty million how much should he give to his ex wife one eight hundred four eight WABC that's one eight hundred eight four eight nine two two two by the way, she Eileen her name is she said that it doesn't matter. She has no interest in ever getting back together with this guy. She's just saying look. I want him to do the right thing. I mean, and she's not straight coming out saying he needs to pay me money back. But I mean, that's I'm saying that anybody who has any morals or ethics is saying that geisha, that's any jerk response. She hates this guy. Loathes this guy. This guy was dead. Slacker just was a drag on her entire life. She finally gets a decree a divorce. Now some way is gonna approach. This is what's going to happen? Juliette as much as she's taking the moral high road. Now, I don't want a stinking penny of you two hundred seventy. I'm not saying that she's just saying I don't I'm not going to want to get back together with you not saying that she won't take money. Right. But she's implying that I don't need your money. You know, I'm okay. But I guarantee you some lawyers gonna get their hooks into her. I hope they do. And there's going to be a major lawsuit. They do this guy says this guy sounds like he just sat there and didn't do a damn thing and just lived. I mean, some of the comments I'm saying this because of the comments that he made in his press conference. Here's what else he has at his press conference. I was very surprised. I look for three hours at home and didn't even realize going back down Thursday. But when I went there, I figured when I woke up Friday morning. I was like well just another thing I lost. And I went down there where they were there. I was just very happy. And I couldn't believe it. So a good Samaritan. Who's in the same convenience store ceased to tickets that he bought he walked out. He such a, you know dim rod. Oh, my God this guy, he leaves it on the counter the good Samaritan picks it up tracks him down. So he had so he literally had left and this. Wow. And so they track. Tickets. If you want him or he would have lost out on this on this store injured in thirty three million dollars. Okay. So the next question is this good Samaritan? Obviously he knows who this person is. Now does this guy this guy or woman needs a nice fat reward? Thank you how much I guarantee. This guy's not going to do it. How much did he give the guy who found these two tickets steady left back into convenience store on the counter 'cause he's such a dim Roddy? Walked out not even thinking twice about it. I'm not sure you describe it said to me one time whatever makes him money. Whatever puts him on the in the papers that day. That's Donald Trump's entire world fame money in love, those are the three most I wouldn't say love. Yeah. I'm trying to put a nice spin on it. So let's talk about what the Democrats should be learning from this election cycle. What should they have done differently in two thousand sixteen and what should they be doing differently in twenty twenty? Well, I think what they learned this year to their credit, and it's taken a long road for them to get there is to try to nominate people for congress who fit the district for years, though. They had this very top down approach where no matter who you were where you were running. You had to be the same democrat that would be acceptable in Manhattan or suffering. Westside democrat, right? You had to be completely pro choice. You had to be completely anti-gun. You had to be completely hired accesses? Purity tests, all the ideological monoculture that Republicans like me used to defeat Democrats all over the country. What they learned is. Yeah. You can you can you can name an Casio Cortez in the Bronx. Right. But you gotta name a Connor lamb in Pennsylvania makes in. Eastern Pennsylvania in rural areas. The Democrats finally seemed to have started to learn that a little bit this year and some of their more progressive candidates like Andrew Gilman, Florida who, you know, for all that people were were very enamored of Andrew gillum. He was very far to the left of where Florida is still came within one percent. Pretty shock..
