Butler, Jokic lead Heat, Nuggets into a NBA Finals after unconventional paths
"This is the first time the nuggets have ever played in the NBA Finals. And the team's first time in a final series since the last year of the ABA in 1976, that means the dearth of experience for nuggets players this deep into a season. One Denver player with finals experience is kentavious Caldwell Pope, who was on the Lakers 2020 title team. Just trying to keep him calm knowing that and the first couple of possessions are going to be a lot even for myself, you know, I'm feeling anxious right now I'd even get out there. The nuggets have rest on their side, having polished off the Lakers last Monday in a four game sweep. The heat will have had two days off since winning game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals. Welcome to another exciting edition of combo over cigars. I am your host, Derek Andre Fleming. Thanks to Derek white, the Boston Celtics have forced a game 7 in the Eastern Conference, finals versus Jimmy Butler and the Miami Heat. After falling behind three to nothing, the Celtics defeated the heat one O four to one O three in game 6 on Saturday to send the series to a winner take all showdown in Boston on Monday to decide who will play the Denver Nuggets. The Celtics have already made history by overcoming a three to nothing deficit and forcing a game 7. The Boston Celtics were up by ten midway through the fourth quarter and then coughed up the lead, Jayson Tatum was a domineering force throughout the contest. He sparked the Celtic scoring 25 points in the first half and finishing with 31 points on the night. Now jaylen Brown added 26 points of his own, but struggled with foul trouble and a wrist injury. Jimmy Butler and bam adebayo posted their worst games of the postseason scoring 35 points on 9 of 37 shooting from the field combined. And expect tackle a finish trailing 100 to 91 with just over three minutes left, the Miami Heat had one more surge left. Vincent converted a layup and butler connected a three, then butler recorded a one of two trip to the free throw line to trim Boston's lead to three points with a minute and a half remaining. Let's just fast forward a little bit with Boston ahead by two points. Jimmy Butler drew a shooting file from Al hofford to go to the line with a chance to send this game into overtime. After Marcus smart missed a quick three point attempt, Derek, white, grabbed the offensive rebound and tipped in a layup scoring a one O four to one O three win for the green men of Boston. "Directions they could possibly go here. But I just want to add this real quick. At the end of all this, Chris, we could debate who's the best fit as a coach. You and I agree on this. It wasn't the coach that was the problem in the first place. Their defense was a disaster. It was great. The first couple of years in the Frank Vogel because he had great defensive game plans and they had the personnel to run it. They didn't have the personnel last year. They have a completely screwed up roster right now, despite having two of the still two of the best players in the game, plus Russell Westbrook, whatever you want to classify him as now. And if they're going to keep Westbrook, I don't care who they hire. Whoever they hire is going to have the same frustration that Vogel had and the idea that some coach is going to come in and just be nicer to Russell Westbrook or give him more latitude or give him more whatever and that's going to solve everything is ludicrous. So this is not about the coach. This is still about fixing the roster. And with all due respect to Terry stotts, one of the reasons he was let go in Portland was because in his last couple of years, the defense was atrocious. So it's not like he's coming in. To fix the defense right away. Look, the Westbrook thing is fascinating. The Lakers are starting to telegraph that Westbrook will be with the team next year. In part because unsurprisingly, teams that are talking to the Lakers are asking for draft sweeteners in the form of a first round pick and the Lakers who don't have much in the way of draft capital over the next 7 8 years don't want to give any up. So it's a rock and a hard place for LA. So the Lakers, I think Sam mimic over at the athletic was the first to write it, have been telegraphing that Westbrook will be part of the team that a new coach inherits coming in. And that's just not going to work. Like bringing Russell Westbrook back would be an enormous mistake. It would put the attention on him, his fit after the way tattooed Frank Vogel, how he works with the coach. It would create unnecessary drama that wouldn't be worth it because we've seen what rusper brings to the table. We've seen he doesn't fit with these guys. For as often as Anthony Davis and LeBron and Westbrook talked about the lack of opportunity, they had playing together. Nobody believes that more minutes together would make Westbrook Davis and LeBron into this wade Bosch LeBron type trio into pierce Allen KG. Just wasn't gonna happen. That's not how it fits anymore. And Westbrook, look, he has told, you know, the Lakers coaching staff last year. They talked to Westbrook about the next evolution of his game. They talked to him about the need to become a better shooter. About the need to become a more of a 6th man type, really. And from the way I heard it, it just fell on deaf ears. Like Westbrook didn't want to hear it. So going back with Westbrook into that mix would be a mistake. That's why Howard, if push comes to shove, don't just got to wave him. Like, heat the money. And wave him. I mean, it sounds crazy to eat $47 million in a contract, and don't stretch him either because you don't want to carry that dead weight into future off seasons, but wave him and then go into the season with the roster without him. Like, I don't know if that wins anything either, but I'm pretty sure at this point that Westbrook Davis LeBron, that trio ain't winning anything. And it could probably be more of a distraction than it is anything productive. If you are trying for the second time in two off seasons to convince yourself that Russell Westbrook is the answer. After already seeing how badly it went last season and if you think you can just put that off on what was the old coach's fault, like what are you even doing? You tried this? Okay, you know, the whole league disagreed with the wisdom of the Westbrook trade. You believed in it fine, but you've seen the results at this point, you need to reckon with the reality, which is that this isn't the same old Westbrook and the only part of him that remains consistent from when he was at his peak is that he stubbornly does things his own way in his own way only. Except he just isn't good at doing as well as he was at his peak. So why you think it's going to be different for a second season? I mean, look, I'm sure on some level they're thinking, yeah, okay, we didn't have enough shooting around these guys, especially if you're going to have Westbrook on the floor with Anthony Davis and LeBron. So we'll just get better shooters this time. Okay, fine. Let's say you somehow hit a home run this summer in your roster rebuilding. You get the shooters you need everything else. He's still going to be a net negative on defense Westbrook. He's still going to be ball dominant unless he's going to suddenly finally reform his game. He's still going to be a guy who has shown that he's not effective running it when LeBron's out, like I just don't see the upside Chris. I just don't see where it is. No coach is fixing that, no scheme is fixing that. No off season of signing shooters if you even get them, is fixing that. I know there's a sense that when you don't want to trade any more picks, you're already out so many picks. Don't trade a pick just to offload them. I'm sorry, but at this stage, the key thing is, can we still make another run or two with LeBron James before he retires? And if that means sending out a pick to induce somebody to take Westbrook and you getting something more useful back something that fits better back, then you do it. You absolutely do it. This is not about the future. You can not, you absolutely can not concern yourself with the future. You have to concern yourself with making the most of the remaining years of LeBron's career and those should all be with the finals in mind, and it's not happening with Russell Westbrook. So if that means sending out a pick to offload him, you gotta do it. I guess the only the only upside to holding on to Westbrook into the season is maybe you get to the trade deadline and some team is out there dead in the water looking to shed salary in 2023 in the way the Lakers are not looking to shed salary. That's a maybe though. We don't know if that team is out there and could put together kind of deal that would appeal to the Lakers to reach that $47 million threshold you gotta get to with Westbrook. So I don't know, I don't know, it's a tough decision, but west Perkins sure sounds like it's gonna be there at the start of next season. Howard, we'll do it again next week when I will negotiate with you. The cost of my couch for game three in Boston. I want Marriott points. I want points. Bonvoy point. Always a pleasure, my friend. We are in late May right now, Lakers still have that coaching opening. According to reports, you've got a finalist list that includes darvin ham, Terry stotts, formally of the trailblazers, and Kenny Atkinson, assistant coach up in Golden State, Darwin had, of course, been multiple stops most recently on Mike Buddhist bench in Milwaukee. To me, Howard, of this list, there's only one guy to hire. That's darvin ham. Like, I think this team, for starters, Darwin ham deserves an opportunity. He's been an assistant coach at a high love for a long time. Anyone and everyone that I've talked to about darvin ham say he is going to be a high level coach. This is a widely viewed opinion throughout the NBA. He's a former player. So he's got that on his resume. I compare him favorably to email you DOCA, who paid his dues in the assistant ranks, had a career comparable to darvin hams in the NBA and used both those tools to become a really high level NBA head coach. I think for a team like the Lakers, like Terry stotts brings experience, but he's not a recent player, right? He's not recently retired like Darwin ham is Kenny Atkinson. I think Kenny Atkinson at this point is better suited for one of those younger type teams. That's rebuilding. He can certainly coach any type of team. I think you got a raw deal in Brooklyn like many do. But I think Kenny Atkins is more suited for rebuilding team than he is one that's trying to win a championship over the next couple of years. Darvin ham to me checks all the boxes. He can connect, I think, to LeBron, Danny Davis, because of his recent playing days, and he's got the coaching pedigree from those years in Atlanta and Milwaukee championship pedigree, coaching Giannis, learning the ins and outs of multiple different systems, defenses like butthead in Milwaukee. To me, the time is right to hire darvin ham. And if you're the Lakers, you gotta do it. If you don't do it, and you go like the safe route, which I think a guy like Terry stotts would probably be, that would be a mistake. I know that a lot of people around the league are keeping an eye on quin Snyder who we've yet to get to really hear anything definitive out of Utah about quin Snyder, but I do think if quin Snyder's off the table, you gotta jump on darvin ham and make him your next head coach. What do you say about that? Well, I mean, listen, there's still some other lingering rumblings out there about, are they still kind of waiting on Doc Rivers in addition to quin Snyder, you know, do you think we were still available? Do you think after that press conference, he's still available? I mean, listen, nobody ever goes into the press conference and says, yeah, you know what? I haven't decided the fate of our coach. We might fire him might not. We might part ways we might say he left on his own. He might tell you he wants to spend more time with. You don't telegraph that. So there's still time for them to make a change if they want to. I'm not suggesting that they should or that they will. I'm not saying I'm hearing anything specific along those lines. I'm saying there are still rumblings out there or that the Lakers are keeping an eye on Doc Rivers just in case. And similar with the juwan Howard situation, Juan Howard says he's not leaving. He wants to coach his kids, but is there still possible? Waiting on that Howard. Wait on that real quick. Like John Howard saying no to even an interview with the Lakers. Like, I get it. You're coaching your kid in an arbor, I get it. But it's the Lakers. It's probably for a lot more money than you're making Michigan though. I'm sure juwan is well compensated at Michigan like to outright turn down an opportunity to interview for the Lakers job. That was interesting to me. That to me kind of showed where the Lakers are right now in the minds of coaches with stronger options. Yeah, I think that's fair. I think that's fair. And you can say that it's offset by because he's coaching his kids or he's, you know, coaching his Alma mater. You can spin it any number of ways. But yeah, the fact is, once upon a time, if the Lakers came calling, now look, krzyzewski turned them down many years ago. He's true. He's Mike kzy and he was already an institution at the institution where he was working. It's a little different for Juan who hasn't been a head coach in the NBA yet, to say no to the Lakers for any coach who has not had that opportunity at the NBA level. And who's not and who's still young in their career, it kind of says something about the way the Lakers as an opportunity are perceived. I agree with you there. I also agree with you on everything you said about darvin ham about it being his time. This should be his opportunity. He's ready. He's got the pedigree, all of it. I will throw the caveat on there, as I've mentioned in the earlier discussion about foreign offices too. There's a lot of guys who we hear highly about and think highly of as assistants and you never know and so they're actually in the chair as head coach because it's a different job. So do we know for sure that darvin ham would be a great coach that's going to help the Lakers figure this all out and get back to the finals? I don't know. Is he worth a shot, I think. So I think you're selling Kenny Atkinson a little bit short in that, yeah, Kenny came up as a development guy. And so that was the reputation. He's going to get guys better. That's what he did as an assistant coach, and then what he did as head coach with the nets. And then when they got the stars, suddenly he was out the door. But I think part of that is because in addition to being a great development coach with the Joe Harris and the Spencer Dinwiddie and the Jared Allen, he is a guy who actually will call guys out. He's got an old school mentality as a coach. Now whether guys want to hear it or not or will take it from him or not given that he didn't play in the NBA. You know, maybe that's an issue. Clearly, Kyrie and or Kevin Durant didn't align with Kenny Atkinson's style. But LeBron's been a guy who's always said, he wants to coach a comment. That was what he loved about ty lue and Tyler took over. Was that ty would hold him to account. Now, they also had a bond through the NBA through various channels, including the fact that obviously Tehran who played for many, many years and played with guys like Kobe and Michael Jordan. And maybe you need that kind of gravitas that's grounded in a playing career in this league. And maybe that's why to your point darvin ham would be the better choice. I don't know that it's definitive. Atkinson does have meaningful head coaching experience in this league. Darvin ham doesn't yet, so I don't know. And again, I think there's still other.

"Is valuing or not valuing people. Yeah, and on Calvin booth, he has been someone that has been viewed as something of a rising star in the executive ranks. The first one to identify him actually was Tim Conley. Who I think if I'm getting the story correct, Calvin was at one of those executive internship programs at Tim spotted him there and there was something along those lines. He recognized the basketball acumen of Calvin booth years ago. So him taking over he has the potential to be that next top GM. But you're talking about letting a top exec get away over money. That's what this is. It's over money. And you've got a boatload of it. If you're Denver. Now yeah, you're paying out some big contracts over the next few years. Nikola Jokić likely going to get a supermax. Michael Porter junior operating on a big contract, Jamal Murray operating on a big contract. But when you have those types of players under contract, the best thing to have in your front office is a GM who knows how to mine talent deep in the draft because presumably you're going to be really good for years to come. So why not have a Tim con who's made hits in the second round? Who's hit late in the first round? I mean, bones island to keep going back to him. Really good player. As he gets stronger in the next couple of years, he's going to be kind of a starter level guy. And whether it's finding the bones highlands or identifying the will Barton's of this league and picking them up off the scrap heaps, you need a guy like that to flesh out your roster. That's how you win championships in this league with guys like that. So I don't understand it. Now, let's move to Minnesota. Great get for the Timberwolves. It's just money. It's just money. Glenn tells got a lot of it. Laurie and Rodriguez have a lot of it. There's no brainer to me to bring in Tim. Now he's inheriting an interesting team. They made their run last year. But are they a team poised to make a jump next year? I don't know. A lot of that depends on the continuing development of Karl Anthony towns, Anthony Edwards. You got to make a decision at some point, what to do with Deangelo Russell, Patrick Beverly, of course, is there when he's not moonlighting on ESPN, you've got to kind of get some pieces around them. So it's not a. It's a good situation to step into if you're Tim Conley, it's not, wow, I'm going to win a championship with this group type of situation. He's got some work to do out there, Howard. He's got work to do, but that is exactly the point of the exercise if you're Alex Rodriguez, and Mark Laurie, the new owners who are now apologize at Michael Lori before. They're working in tandem with Glenn Taylor, the outgoing owner, right? So there's a part of a power sharing arrangement and in effect right now. Taylor still has last seen everything. So Glenn Taylor, who's made plenty of mistakes during his very long tenure credit to him for, you know, putting his stamp of approval on this whole transaction during his final year or so. As the lead owner there. But a rod and Mark Laurie kudos to them because Chris, they're doing what I've always said, you're supposed to do if you're an owner in this league, which is recognize that you don't know anything about how to actually run an NBA team. So what should you do when you're going to hire a GM or president of basketball apps? Try to poach somebody who's already really good at it. Don't go and hiring your Friends, don't go hiring, you know, the agent that you got close to during a course of years of business dealings. Don't go hiring the person who's like, you're just you have a friendship or a business relationship or whatever you have a trust and I'm alluding to several situations here, right? You can guess what they are. But try to go get the established people first. According to the athletic, they first tried to get Masai ujiri, asked about Sam presti, asked about Elton brand with the sixers. That's the way to do it. Go poke around first on the guys who you know are great at this and have established track records. And if you can't pry any of them free, then you ask those same guys, hey, who's the next you or who's the best on your staff? Who's deserving of running their own show? And that's what the bulls did when they hired our tourists from Connelly staff. And in this case, you know, Conley is not that far behind the group I was talking about with messiah and presti. He might actually be right there with them. And so kudos to a rod and Mark Laurie and Glenn Taylor for making this bold move and not going cheap or not just going with the next guy you knew or whatever. Like there's so many ways to screw this up. And this is no guarantee that Tim Connelly will go there and have the same success that he's had in Denver, but I believe he will. He's got a long enough track record. He's a great guy. Anybody around the NBA will tell you that too, there's a humility there. One of the things that he will always say, and he started saying this the minute that jokic started to emerge as a potential star, he's like, man, come on, we got lucky. We passed on him too. We got him in the second round. Everybody passed on him, including us. You know, like we didn't know he was going to become this. And that's the same thing that and this is an apropos comparison. Throughout the dunk and era, if you asked RC buford or pop or anybody there, man, you guys got Tony Parker with the 29 30th pick, whatever it was, the first round. Wow, you got Manu in the second round, whatever. They'd say, listen, nothing works without Duncan and we were fortunate enough to win, you know, they got the lottery obviously. Everything works because of Duncan. And so there was a humility that always underpinned everything there. And that's how Connelly is. That's how Tim Connolly, he's really grounded really humble, great guy, and that engenders a nice working environment where people want to be too. So you can get good people. And Minnesota hasn't been a destination for players or coaches or front office people, I don't think in a lot of ways over the years. So and they do have a good foundation with Anthony Edwards and Carl Anthony towns. I do think they need to offload D'angelo Russell. I think they probably will do everything possible to do that this summer. I'd be shocked if they didn't, frankly. And now it's just working around the edges. You've got your two pillars, you know, and, you know, very few people in this league go, trust more than Tim Connelly, to get Minnesota to make the next leap. Hey, he's a scout through and through. That's in his DNA from his early years in the NBA. And if you're looking to find the best players in the mid first round, late first round, wherever the wolves wind up drafting, moving forward, including the second round, there are a few better guys in this leaked do it than Tim Collins. So great move by Minnesota, Denver, let's hope Calvin booth works out and that for an office stays as strong as it once was. Is your savings just sitting there? Well, put it to work. "Have, I think, a distinct advantage because Tatum playoffs. It's like a Tatum playoffs become. Like he hasn't been great, all throughout the playoffs said a lot of clunkers in this, but whenever they've needed him, he has stepped up in plate huge. And games after the three losses in the Milwaukee series. He's told a 105 points in those three games. On Monday night, he had 31 points. He got to the free throw line 16 times as two more than Miami got to the free throw line all game long. Somethings which is running to the free throw line. During that game, you have to expect that's going to change too. When you get down to Miami and into game 5, but Tatum keeps stepping up and I feel like with the Celtic maybe sensing a little bit of blood in the water and the Celtics believing that with all their guys, they're the better team. I feel like Tatum is going to close the show pretty strong. That's my prediction too. I think my only remaining concern or curiosity is which of your 5 apartments are you going to put up the SI staff at for the half of the finals that's in Boston. And are these pullout couches? One of the big stories outside of the playoffs this week was the minister of Timberwolves hiring Tim Conley to be their general manager. Tim, of course, longtime president over in Denver helped build that team into the contender that it is. Never want a championship, of course, with the nuggets, but if not for injuries, that nuggets team might have had very different postseasons over the last couple of years. He reportedly gets a 5 year deal worth $40 million that includes some equity stake within the Minnesota Timberwolves negotiated at first with Alex Rodriguez, Michael Laurie, part of that group and eventually closed the deal Glendale is going to own that team through 2023. Look, it's a lot of money for a general manager. Don't get me wrong. But I'm surprised Howard that the nuggets didn't go to the mat to keep Tim connell. He's reportedly doubling his salary with Minnesota to go there. And look, the nuggets are not a big market franchise, but Stan Kroenke, the top guy in that organization, he's worth north of $10 billion. Like, if you're GM has the success rate of Tim Conley, who selected Nikola Jokić, selected Michael Porter junior, selected Jamal Murray. This past year took bones highlander who looks like a terrific player. Go down the list. He has had great pick after great pick, no matter where they are in the draft. If you have a GM like that, you keep him and you spend the money you need to spend to keep him. A top GM in today's league, that's what you have to pay them at this point. Why are the Timberwolves aware of that? And Denver is not. Yeah. I'm debating which one side of this I want to discuss first, what are you doing Denver or the applauding Minnesota? I guess we'll start with what are you doing, Denver? You know, to the nuggets credit during the cranky years, they've had two of the best GMs two of the best head of basketball ops in the NBA. They had messiah ujiri for many years. And then when he left for the raptors, they replaced him with Tim Conley, and Tim Connelly has been quietly one of the best in the league. And he's the guy who when you talk to other executives or other people around the league and you start making those lists those kind of theoretical, who's the top 5 top ten right now. The guy everybody says, you know who everybody's overlooking. Every year, the other guy will be overlooking. Tim Connelly is doing a great job. Timberwolves have recognized that. I'm sure the nuggets have two, but you're right. They're letting him walk and it's great to keep hiring great GMs, but they're not that easy to come by. It looks like they're promoting Calvin booth, who's been working under Tim Connelly. And I'm sure they'll be in great hands with Calvin booth, but we don't, you don't know until you know, right? You don't know about the assistant coach becoming head coach until he finally gets a shot. You don't know about the assistant GM becoming GM or GM going up to president whatever the pecking order may be with the given team. But they also lost arteris Carnot service over the last few years. He was Tim Connolly's right hand guy. He went to go run the Chicago Bulls. So they've had a brain drain and yeah, I'm with you. Small market but you're loaded. You are multi billionaire owners. And you can afford to keep guys. And it also speaks just to your values as an organization or the way you value people. This guy has put you on the map. He has made you for certain a perennial contender with a now two time MVP. They'll get healthy, they'll be right back in the mix for years to come. They're talented and they're young. And Tim Connelly deserves a ton of credit for that. And I just think it's a bad sign to send to your players to your coaching staff to other people around the league to people you may want to hire later. It's just showing that you didn't value a guy who put your franchise on the map and made you relevant in a way that, you know, you hadn't been for several years ever since the Carmelo Anthony force his way out of town. And this is a team that's got a better shot probably at winning titles than what they had with Carmelo in that era. I just think it's a bad indication of the way that ownership.

"Francisco with the warriors and maps. Which those two games at least were at least somewhat compelling that I was at heat Celtics, which we I'm sure we'll get into. I just want that to be over, Chris. It's not fun. It looks unpleasant. It looks painful. Everybody's hurt. I saw a score last night that I've never seen in my career. What did it ended up at 18 to one or something at one point? Miami had one point through the first 8 minutes of the game. Just bizarre, absolutely profoundly bizarre. So yeah, just get that series over with, please. All right, so let's talk about the Eastern Conference playoffs, which really the only series with any kind of drama at the moment. Tied up at two, going into game 5 on Wednesday and I wrote about this over at SI dot com on Tuesday, Howard. This series has been wildly unpredictable. You've had teams I believe in each one of the first four games with 20 point leads. And you just haven't been able to tell what you're gonna get every single game. Injuries have taken a toll on this series, Tyler hero is out now with Miami, Jimmy Butler is clearly limited with a knee injury in Miami, Marcus smart. He did not play in game four for the Celtics, Robert Williams, just at the end of game four dragging that left leg around courtesy of a lot of minutes playing on that recently surgically repaired date. You don't know what you're gonna get. In this series. But I was at game four in Boston. And my biggest takeaway is that the Celtics are just better. Like they're the better team in this series. This series is tied. Largely because of what the Celtics have failed to do. And that is protect the ball in game three. They committed 24 turnovers in game three. That led to 33 points from Miami. They had the ball deflected 29 times. I think it was a playoff high for this year by Miami. They did it themselves in game three. What was a game one? You know, where the Celtics third quarter was like a 39 to 14 run by Miami like the southeast are just shooting themselves in the foot in the games that they've lost in the series. They play like they played in game four, which is sturdy defensively, which they've been for most of the second half of the season. Relatively turnover free, get three turnovers in the first half, 11 overall. They're the better team. They do star. So, you know, it's two two going down to Miami, the heat have home court advantage, going into game 5, all that. I think the self is a fully capable of winning the next two. In fact, I would predict them to win the next two games of the series. If they are healthy ish and if they keep the turnovers low. I used to use as a reference point when I try to explain to people and remind myself Chris that the playoffs are really unpredictable sometimes and that no single game is necessarily indicative of a series we always overreact. We're always pushing to the moment the second of team wins by 20 something we think it's over. They figured it out, the other team ain't coming back. And I always used, as an example, the 2013 NBA Finals between the spurs and heat, which just pinged back and forth between blowouts. It was game two 19 point win by the heat, and then the next time it was the spurs with a 36 point win, which then swung back to a 16 point heat win the next time. It was crazy. I'm now going to substitute in as my reference point, I think this Celtics heat series for just sheer unpredictability and the lesson for why we can never actually pretend we know what's going to go on in a playoff series. And injuries are part of it, Chris. I think there's other factors. These are obviously two elite defensive teams that really get after it and that will do everything possible to shut off everything you're trying to do. But I think it's exacerbated by the fact that the Miami Heat just weren't a great offensive team to begin with. And are the real outlier of the final four in these playoffs. I was looking this up. So Jimmy Butler, you and I both know. And he's hurt right now. He's dragging a little bit. At his best, if Jimmy wants to fill up the box score, he can. It's not, it's not who he's been throughout the course of his career. He's never been a high volume shooter. I have volume score. He can bring it when needed, right? And what he's best at is scoring a little assisting playmaking, ball handling, rebounding, and a lot of defense and a lot of leadership and a lot of just keeping guys accountable, right? Like I love the Jimmy Butler experience, but he's not your typical leading man in this league where massive scores, incredibly talented scores, usually rule the day. So I looked this up because I was curious. Jimmy averaged 21.4 points a game in the regular season. So forget about the playoff tools, which I know are higher. 'cause that's indicative that he can score, right? That he can score big, but it's not naturally his role. He usually averages somewhere 21, 22 points a game in his career. 21.4 points per game in the regular season. I wanted to know when's the last time somebody averaged that few points and let it team to the championship. It's been a while. So last year, Yanis, 28 points a game in the regular season. The year before you had both Anthony Davis and LeBron for the Lakers averaging over 25. The year before that, Kauai for the raptors, average 26, the two years before that, you had the Durant curry combination, both those guys average 25 plus before that, LeBron leading the Cavs at 25 plus before that Steph Curry 24. You have to go back to 2014. Another one of those heat spurs finals. Where Kawhi Leonard averaged 12.8 points per game in the regular season and only 14 in the playoffs, but Kawhi Leonard was playing with Tim Duncan Manu ginobili and Tony Parker with all due respect to bam Kyle Lowry and Tyler hero, not the same before that you got a couple of LeBron wade years where there will obviously a big time scores. Dirk had only 23 points a game in the 2010, 11 season, so that's a little lower, but still not as low as Jimmy Butler and then before that Kobe Bryant. So point being the heat, it's to their credit that they've made it this far and if they somehow win this series, which is still on the table, it will be an incredible achievement. They are not built like your typical contender because they don't have that guy offensively. And it is the one thing, as you know, Chris because we talked about it in the weeks and months leading to the postseason. It was the one concern I had with the heat was I admire the heck out of what they're doing. I don't know if a team without an elite score can make it all the way in this league. But it's still possible as you and I record this. Yeah, look, the selfish could go down to Miami and they could play game 5 without Robert Williams and without Marcus smart. Like that would be a game change. Dirk white, by the way, great story in game four. I mean, he had played abysmally in the first two games of the series at a goose egg in game two. But he comes out, has ten points in the first quarter, plays all 12 minutes, plays a lot of minutes in the first half, chips in with the assist, steals, took a charge, played great defense against Jimmy Butler. That heat starting lineup had what, 18 points total in that game, 6 for 36 from the floor. I mean, that was just elite level defense. That's got defense though, that would take a big hit. If smart and Williams are both out, that's the defensive player of the year. And second team all defensive big man. So Miami very much Linda, but if Boston has all their guys, I just don't see them beating them. I don't think they can score enough. And I don't think their defense is as good as Boston. As good as my name is defense is Boston's is just a little bit better. And I think that will play out over the rest of the series. So I think the Celtics within the next two, I think they closed the series out in 6 at home on Friday. And we're talking about the selfish warriors. Series, there are let's get to that right now. It's feeling that way. It's feeling that way. I've got enough respect for the heat that I'm not ruling out anything, especially look, as we record this, it's two, too. Maybe Jimmy and the gang all magically heal, too. But also, as you know, it's not like the Celtics are fully healthy either, but as long as they've got Jayson Tatum and jaylen Brown out there, they.

"Senior three eleven. You have zoo bosch four or five fourteen points other than that. There's really luke kennard double figures but he only had ten. The primary scoring is coming from reggie jackson. Paul george by and large and that's a lot of pressure to put on those two. Especially when you have on the other side of guy like chris paul coming back. What do you think this. How do you think the series goes is going to evolve. I think the suns win series. But i am reluctant to say that it's over logan You know you're going back. You're going back home you know. It's corny cliche. But some of these guys are gonna play better at home I've got enough of a track record now with with ti lou. He is going to make the adjustments again. You talked about campaign having phenomenal game. Not taking anything away from how good he was because he was great a lot of that existed. Because you're in that drop coverage again with with zubac and am bogey. And he's just coming down like bein. In time biding time. And then he's hitting you with the lefty floater. Right like you had to clean that up you have to you know. What is there an adjustment though for like you. Talk about job coverage. Maybe there's an adjustment for a zoo box but with boogie right now man. He has like two flat tires. Right now i i. Just don't i don't know if we know the adjustment may be a personnel adjustment. Does not putting him in a game. It's generally what i'm saying. Like you see luke canard more than you saw more than the eleven minutes. He played lower than nineteen minutes. He played the ten points in nineteen. You know what i mean. I don't know. I just not. Lou makes adjustments and that was the reason that The campaign was getting buckets. But so for those reasons. I think that the clips have shot in game three to get game three if they do not getting swept out of the playoffs but if they get game three i think we get a series of sons still winning. I think the suns sweep went in five at the most of collided and comeback. Honestly i think that's what that is It's been cool. There's i'm really loving the Even at the Though devon booker was five a sixteen from the field after that knows where he made timely shots man like. I really love this. I love this son's team. They do that. Oh one other thing. I wanted to ask you. We know your favorite person in the world. Scott foster did you see the ba- the outta balanced call at the end. All the the patrick beverley hills. Beverly hit out. But it's off devon booker shifts. Sean i get it. I get it. But the spirit of the rule is off devon booker man. It was a smart play by pab because they have already knew if you put it replay. They're going to say it's Devon booker even if me in your plant pickup. Obviously you're gonna win at. You're playing pickup and you strip me out of bounds. It's ball says my ball. You're going to give me the ball and then struck me again and again and again but anyway i don't like this ruling how do we even with replay. How do we get this shit out of the. I don't like this. This isn't it's not. it's not cool. Yeah i don't know man arrested with this. I i mean that play. That ball was off devon booker rate by like if you slow it down to microseconds of film. It's off a double bite but anyone who knows it that balls off patrick beverley right so right so like i don't love that but once you once you open pandora's box so to speak with replay you open yourself up for all of that like i don't know what's the answer to just did not have replay. I'm fine with no replay. I don't love replay. I can also understand why people like replay. I think also you can have a bit more nuance. Oh right. like yeah. Came off of devon booker. However you know like you know the play we saw. That's now you can't do that you can't do that. You can't do that. you can't do that. Because now you got my focus. Like scott foster and zacks zorba and all the rest. Like you're just gonna leave it up to the like you're gonna go two replay and grant them the the latitude to be like. Nah but you can't do that if you're us replay. That shit's gotta be off of devon booker so this is just unintended consequences as is going to have to ride right. Is this what you're saying or you're going to have to get rid of it. Because i don't think you can have three officials over there and give them this the though the breath to be like knock them o'donnell already known as we cannot open up. That fucking box. who wins. Who wins tonight. i got phoenix. Two grow just that you just said that the series over and then was like i've gotta pick them to win game win game three out. The series is over right. Like i could see. I could see those guys playing better and stuff at home. I just don't think devon booker pl- has that type offense performance again tonight. We'll follow for you. Will you ever pick against the sun's for the rest of the season.

"Blame Kevin Durant for the Nets, losing to the Milwaukee Bucks. In fact I walked away from the net season feeling Really hopeful optimistic because when the Nets first put together their big three James Harden, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant. I went down, we'll see if that works because they're all different personalities and maybe the personalities won't work well together. And they had Steve Nash hired as their head coach, and I was like, well, Steve Nash loved watching him play. He's never coached in the NBA before, and I was worried about that and well, Steve next stage Steve Nash. Steve Nash, trying to talk, it's English was hard, you know, it's hard to talk Steve Nash, was clearly the right coach for them, where he's a guy who he's a, former NBA superstar off, he can relate to them, you work well with them, and if James Harden and Kyrie Irving had not gotten hurt. Right. Now, this moment we'd be watching the Eastern Conference Finals tonight. Game 1. And the Nets would be the favorite to win the title. I mean look I I Phoenix is phenomenal. Phoenix is really good to watch that. They really well together. But a healthy Brooklyn against Phoenix would be the favorite. I mean, I don't how you wouldn't feel that way the Nets. What I saw was bad luck, they lost, because they got injured and you can argue with conditioning and play whatever you want to argue, but I am really excited for next year. If Brooklyn can stay healthy, their future is bright. I mean, I watched them in the back office and he changed my mind. I'm a Believer. I just I. Okay, I really, I think I even put out this will video saying this will never win a title, so I'll never work. Nah, I think I am wrong. I really the Nets changed my mind. I think they're a team that if they can stay healthy next year. That's that seems like a title Contender. Seems like a team that wins the title. I do have two other takeaways from the series. I hate Yiannis is really long Jana sizes, really long. Like free, throw a ritual that just takes forever. And I like, you does this, like, like 10 times and it's like, dude, you get ten seconds at the at the free throw line and off, they almost never call it. So irritating, the account and they rarely call a 10-second violation. And it seems very like how was they called it twice in the playoffs? Like how was this a violation? All the other times he does, aren't it's like, are we going to call it consistently or not? So I hate Yiannis. Is free thrill ritual. It's just terrible and annoying. And then God, I guess number two, I'm going to really miss having a New York crowd in the NBA playoffs. I mean, there's something about New York, it's crowds in New York or special, especially in the playoffs basketball game. There's an energy and I would even kind of I jokingly call it mean they're mean like, if you trade, that's the Knicks, but I just the next got eliminated. I'm like, okay, Brooklyn is our last. Hope they keep a New York crowd in the NBA playoffs and then they got eliminated too. It's like, oh man. I was so sad. I mean other than the fact that I love watching, Kevin Durant, do incredible stuff of the basketball. I was like, man..

"Works but we have a game tonight. Also you know you're trying not to go into right. This is the whole thing trying to stay in it to win it. The grizzlies headed to vote in state to play the warriors out. There should be a really really fun. Game as i mentioned. Dillon brooks are feel it has future star potential and obviously you have the warriors who have the championship pedigree and i don't mean triple h. I liked that that was good. Anything you're looking for in this game. Who has the advantage any. He players to watch outside of the people. That are the person that i just mentioned. Honestly i wanna see which these two team could. They can both run. I wanna see which team runs out of gas. I will start to see that towards the tail. End of the third heading into the four is when we start to see like okay this entire game starting to open up for team blank team blanked. I understand that makes makes perfect sense to me. I'm obviously steph will be stepping and john moran. We'll be moran as so we'll have to see his funny. Because i think of john moran like the first thing that comes to mind is marandus. And i thought thinking of honey i shrunk the kids but that's neither here nor there but looking at this game it's going to be a really good one. I'm hoping i get a chance to watch it with the glimpse in hand again as we celebrate. Eight thousand listens since being on anchor So we definitely wanna thank everybody. That's been listening out there. Eight thousand in two years years. Yeah not everything this is just so we probably have eclipsed i mean oh my god knows how many listens double or almost triple. But eight thousand anchor listens as we've been on the platform but last two seasons. Which is i mean it's been tremendous. I've been tremendous Definitely you again but really quickly johnny. We had some finals. nba finalists which. I know part of it. You're happy with part of it. You might have some issues with melissa. The pe- candidates. I know you're happy tat. Not see lebron name his name about. There's no way broadcaster james name. Mvp for these. you're right. you're absolutely right at anyone who argues against it. We have years back that we can make the same argument for other people. You we talked about this over and over and we would have to probably do. I think when the mvp is announced that will probably be that day showed like when we hear that when we see that final award ceremony will probably have to spend a whole show going over that griped. The inconsistency of mvp boating is super bad. Really really the most inconsistent thing in sports. Honestly it's pretty wrath so steph curry yes indeed effluence yokich. I still think joe catches winning this year. I think we allie said the. Who's gonna end up. Winning this before man started to. So i think that is in there because of what he's done the last twenty five games right really will them to play environment. Yes agile catch. I still will bag to haul should been this conversation. What he helped phoenix do this year. Gripe gripe yet. But i mean yeah it steph curry the bombing threes like crazy moans. Chris paul absolutely been willing that team to become better when he's he's a player. Who just does get in respect ryan and he's also the staff is also the scoring champ. So you got. I feel like they feel compelled to throw him in there almost by default people. Just look at certain that last till into the season instead of the she says. Oh but that's here there but let's get to rookie. Let's get to the rookie Lamelo ball anthony edwards and tariffs halliburton. Which how berdon i remember. My brother wanted the knicks to grab him prior to the kings So i knew he had some talent I didn't really hear of course about him as much as you hear about. Lamelo ball and anthony edwards. I think anthony edwards most likely is gonna win this and the only reason i thanked. That'll be the acis because lamelo missed a lot of time with But i will say that some of the games that. I did hear that tyler burton played. I did see that he was a really really talented player So the one thing that i would say is that anthony edwards get some of the accolades because he had some of the big dunks If quantifying the year that's bad smith that's how it is all about quality. Plays lavelle is windows while he has some really really great highlight dunks. He's not as consistent as people think about. Tiger taliban albert burton is on the kings as well too. So people aren't really looking at what that team is doing which is and then. The people aren't really looking at the timber wolves either. At least the kings are exciting. Because they were they have some exciting players they have in minnesota play that i get the fox who i really wanted to next year but you know how that gonna but they said only reason i could see melanin getting a because of the stretch. He missed games be injured But let's move on here. Sixth man of the year jordan. Clarkson joe ingles or derrick rose so this is a tough one. It's got us off if you really or you. Let me know who you think. Is going to be driven clarkson. I was thinking i was actually thinking angles. Basically it's be jazz books. Okay yeah someone. And as much as i'm a humor would love to see the navy and in gold. Sure i can't down. There grows win it. I'll be pleasantly surprised. Would feel like this is more of a utah jazz award absolutely absolutely makes sense but had an incredible year. I can't take anything away from bill. And i appreciate everything he's done for the knicks to get us to where we are but six men year unfortunately the utah jazz has just. Their bench has been one of the best interest in in the whole week absolutely awesome. Let's look at here. Defensive player of the year you know surprise surprise. Bear draymond green and ben simmons which dream on obviously we. We'd seen him play defense consistently over the years. unfortunately he's always probably had to go up against a rudy. Go bear jaanus. Somebody other players are surprised as he. Ben simmons on here. But i'm happy to see that. He's proved his defense. Yes and had a has really been using his frame And that's really really important. It's hard when you're going against rudy. Go bear.

What's going on what is up by brothers sisters. J. godley coming at you with awesome. We have made it through a one whole week the made amongst friends. This new format here. We're doing it every day monday. Through friday with a bonus on. Saturday should be awesome but but we had more of this play in tournament. Which as it goes on. It just gets better and better and last night. We had the wizards versus the pacers and for some reason the east and had this conversation at dinner last night the east teams have been one sided. They've been dominant. The west have been so more competitive side. Expect that competitive game tonight. What this eastern games have been so one-sided i mean what are you. What are you contributed. What do you think is contributing to that these. These games have been one-sided honestly it's a mixture of just. The other team really wants it. That's the first part. I mean we kinda slim that battle right there but the other. I think it's a matter of pace of play honestly The pacers were actually pretty sluggish for the most part which is kinda weird given how they played tuesday yeah so just sluggish. They just couldn't hit shots to save their lives honestly. And that's the thing that stinks is that it doesn't think we talked about it. The other day. I said for some reason russell. Westbrook and bradley beal seem to work this whole holding. They have it. Works not saying not taking away from john wall not taking anything obviously from james harden or anybody else that russell's play with but this combo paul george everybody else that he's played with even victor depot. This particular combo works I haven't seen sideshow bob. I mean Robin lopez out there. Giving the pacers though work But it wasn't interesting game nonetheless One forty to one fifteen. I guess said this play in tournament is is really really hitting the one person who did show up as he did. Previously you know democracy bonus nineteen and eleven actually have triple double nineteen ten assists eleven rebounds markham brogden never young player that has great potential and even cash stanley off. The bench came in. You know the former dookie actually played really really well so It seems like they might've just ran out of gas. I know they went on a sixteen or eighteen point. Run the wizards did where the pacers didn't score for a long extended period time and i'm sitting there and i'm like you know guys like it. Looks like me out there after you know three games i kid you know. Three three is my limit. They all three games in debt. Right there speaks to in. Oh well the way that we're brought up playing basketball while if you jump shots not working. What do you need to do. Drive drive pain and try to like your bright. They completely ran outta gas in day. Just couldn't overcome the light. That was the washington wizards. I mean big shouts to a review haji morris while to who had a great game on sunday hero. Yeah he's been. He was a good pick for the wizards. Because he's the kind kinda guy. Kinda quiet is a rising star. You know doesn't know it yet which is good but what is really has really really humble beginning so i feel like this is going to be an opportunity for him behind russell. Westbrook behind rally bill and even with the help and development of daniel gifford. Who was you know giving the pacers fists. He's blocking shots. Left and right so I think that whore and well. This is what i talked about with the hornets. This core this is a core right here so now you might say hey. We might not need alex. Len we can either bring. Daniel gathered up or we need to get a legit center in here and we can really really run but with this what they have right now. This is a really really solid core and they can keep them together it works. I do agree. I think they just need a few pieces become An elite eastern conference team You know maybe they can knock that outlet draft. Maybe they can knock that out of during the off season. But they're all season hasn't started now they are now used seat and now we have to see if they can give us similar production. It a seven game series. You know i'm excited about this. Though right this particular matchup why. Westbrook versus nbc dying. I think they had some history together. A you know still kind of go back and forth. They'll aware westbrook is. I find them. Beat and and they kinda go at it. So i'm really excited to see this matchup. This is obviously the sixers series to lose. Because i mean they've had every chance for the last couple years to progress and get better and really make that push. i mean. obviously. The previous year hawaii hits a big shot in the corner. I would cry to embiid style thousand two years ago yeah. I was three years ago. That shot with so clutch and on here and then you can do about that but cry because you are so close to going overtime. Which is a possibility that the sixers beat over time but that's hearsay they. They're the number. One bego against the wizards who i feel that the seventy sixers can beat them Just within bead and simmons alone but they really have some other talented pieces That that really.

"It's I was looking back going back to it cuz it was one of the things that I touched on in my column but like Terrors year average points a game in 2019 and he shot like 38% from the floor. It was terrible. I was complaining right on the whole year. It's like who in their right mind would be like, yeah, let's let's say him to like was 30 something million dollars over three or more than that. No, sixty sixty over here screaming versus the guy who just played it in all 82 in his prime coming up through Straight All-Star appearances. Like I just I don't know. There's always something about Terry though with everyone. He wasn't great. I mean, he was the point guard on that team that that took LeBron to the brink and the Eastern Conference Finals. No, great games he had some she had some horrible games and that that that play our friend as well. But he always had that Vibe of he's might be a guy you want in the trenches with you? Yeah. I mean, he's been shooting the crap out of the ball since he left I think, you know getting back to the schedule real quick before we wrap. Like, I think that Knicks game is second of back-to-back for the Celtics right after Billy that could be that could be treacherous like especially if they lose the fill again. Yeah, if you lose to Philly then what are you don't know that that's not going to be great cuz like the Knicks are wage. Like not bad either another kind of time you want to see on the second night of a back-to-back right? Not even close to a gimme. Yeah. They also kick the crap out of the Celtics wage in like couple months ago, which ever one at the time was like, oh, it's just one game but at that damned a game, yeah. Yeah the Sunday to Sunday afternoon stinkers at the salty G. I know that point on for this year. Yeah. That was, that was that game was coming off one of their five-game winning streaks get one five in a row had the one had the 1:00 game on Sunday afternoon lost by Thirty and then they went to Philly and lost both those games song Good Times..

"To be literally a top three top five MVP candidate every year, you know that he's in the league because that's that's what you need to be an alien ship team. He's not yeah, it doesn't mean it's a bad player. He's still a great player, but you got to get to that next level you want him to be nearly perfect with his decisions and all cut out all the stuff the why he's held to a different job. And he's held to the standard that you want a top-five top-ten NBA player to be that's that's right. Any criticism of him is just that he's not they're not that he's not good. Okay, I think people often I agree right but I think that's the next step in the question though. Like that's the next step. It almost reminds me. It really reminds me of a young LeBron. Like remember that was the huge part of the Browns game. We had to get down how to be more of a playmaker how to make his team better because his team was in strong enough that you know, he was a shoo-in to make it to the Eastern Conference Finals, you know, like obviously this is a different situation because you know, the broad didn't have a guy like Jaylen brown, but I think the biggest difference here for for Jayson Tatum was that obviously he had the experience of going to the East Conference Finals. So many times as a young as a young player and now that you know, it is quote-unquote his team. He has to sort of figure this thing out and sort of divvy up the touches with someone like Jaylen Brown. So it's a tough..
