"Attention right about now friends. You know who they are? That's the birds Remember the birds from the good old days? Well, some of you guys remember that Welcome back to 21st Century radio. This is Dr Bob Farrand. Emus with my producer Mark Warner and our she's an executive producer and resource is Listen and is also a PhD in a sense. And also our engineer is Anita Brockington. Now. Our guest is Ted nor he's an advocate for rap. Dixon, one of the best Negro Be baseball players. Not yet in the Hall of Fame, Plus We're going to find out what it means that the Negro leagues have been declared a major date later on. And also find his rap Dixon page on Facebook with a quick link on the Facebook page for 21st, Century radio and again. Don't miss a show here on 21st century radio subscribed Sher 21st Century radio on YouTube. It's absolutely free. Are you with us here? Dead? I'm here. Well, we're looking forward to this part because Mimi, I was so excited when I got into the a little bit earlier when I was growing up. I'm always growing up. Now. That's just that's a period now. This question. I want you to take your time with its worth The price of admission alone. Let's hear some rap Dixon legends You say there are about a dozen stretching from 1924. 1944. I was born in 1943, so I just made in there. Okay, well, 1924 is a big year. This is the first year the Harris for Giants. The attainment was 34 years old and the best amateur semi protein in the central Pennsylvania. They now become a major league team. They're in the eastern colored league in the strength of their team. In the first legend of rap, Dixon is this outfield. Coordinated. The whole thing itself is the greatest outfield in really history and let me defend that point. They're two intact for four years. They include all of Famer and all three positions are manned by one of the dozen best of filters in Negro League history. Because the whole had seven in the hall and five remaining on a 2006 ballot, And that includes Charleston, This center fielder in the hole and both Fats Jenkins and wrap fixing in left and right. Are on that ballot. So the whole thing has signified 12 outfielders and three of them are in this outfield for four years. They are There is no other Negro League outfield of any real duration that has that same all three among the top 12, So I think that makes him the best in the Negro leagues. Although there are two other fields I want to mention ST Louis stars in the twenties. They have Wilson readers and Branch Russell two outstanding outfielders, and they flanked the great Cool Papa Bell and this outfield together for I want to say four or five years they do meet the Duration mark and they do meet the having a Hall of Famer. 20 years later, Homestead Grays have another field again spectacular intact for four years. No whole Famer here, although they have one should be They have David Watley and Jerry Benjamin, and they're left builder was their manager, the great Victor Harris, and I just got a comment on Vic. He's borderline Hall as an outfielder, however. He managed. I want to say around 900 games. Now considered major league games. There is no major league manager with a higher winning percentage and at least 900 games than Victor Harris. So good care. Yeah, He should be on anyone. Seven penance, So I don't know what more you want from a man on the bench. But he also was a darn good outfielder, and and that outfielder the Grace. Was a great outfield, but let's take a look at the outfield that they're competing against in the segregated majors. The first one that comes to mind is the Detroit Tigers of 1913 to 1916, and this outfit was led by their center fielder Ty Cobb. Boy flanking, tie it. Sam Crawford, also Hall of Famer and Bobby's each What makes this outfield remarkable and provable. They have more wind shares that Bill James dead. For four consecutive years than any other outfield in major league history. So that's one I want you to. Don't forget. The same time, the Boston Red Sox. This is another two Hall of Fame outfield. Had the great twist speaker in center Harry Hooper in right. I hope I got there, right. Duffy Lewis and left. Lewis is the only one not in the hall. And this outfield is together for six years. So this is truly an outstanding outfield, the only major league outfielder that has a six year duration other than this one Is the Pittsburgh Pirates of 1960, Bob Skinner, Bill Virdon and Roberto Clemente. Through that field. I want to bring your attention to his murderers roam the Yankees of the twenties. You have Bob music in left field. Earl Combs, the Hall famer and center. And then, of course, the Great Babe Ruth and right. And I don't three year field. I fear we're the three best. Of the 1st 50 years in white baseball. But I picked them in part because of their headliner. Ty Cobb is the first out there were put into the major league put into Cooper's does that outfielder Babe Ruth is the second Chris Speaker is the third the center filler of the Harrisburg Giants. Ask your Charleston was called the Black Tie or the Black Babe or the Black spoke. Another was his nickname. Parallel. Those three great players. The first three put into the hall and not me. Often is the first Outfielder put into the hall is a Negro leaguer that had passed on on nothing against Monty or cool, but the fact that they were able to make speeches Okay in Cooperstown aided. They're being put in before Charlie Oscar Charleston is simply the With only Babe Ruth ahead of him. The second best outfielder. And that's a debatable but I do. I would pick the Babe over Charlie, but that's the only one not time not trist. If he gets challenged by anyone. It's probably by Turkey stars. But so that's the anchor the field and then you have again. That's Jenkins and wrap ticks and surrounding Charlie and this outfield for full years. It's 3 51 in composite, 3 51. Mm. And 11 more thing I have to point out Since the integration of the game, beginning with Duke Snider, speaking about trailers now Duke Duke was a white outfielder with Jackie on the Dodgers. Duke's the first home fielder put into the hall..

Anita Brockington David Watley Jerry Benjamin Roberto Clemente Mark Warner Bob Skinner Bill James Bill Virdon Sam Crawford Earl Combs Charlie Ty Cobb Detroit Tigers Pittsburgh Pirates 1943 Victor Harris Mimi Branch Russell 1944 Bob Farrand

"Like i said earlier was kind of know Strong out of the gate You know in this. These three three first three years of eastern colored league. They won the pennant each of those years. But also it's an interesting time because The beginnings of what was a quote unquote colored world series. was also in the in the often. Come nineteen twenty four. The second year of the sel's existence which. I guess is. I guess you could probably describe as sort of an uneasy relationship but but probably a good thing for the entirety of still fledgling negro league baseball concept because you had essentially the best of one of those leagues playing the best of the other of those leagues And he'll is right in the middle of all that both twenty four in being in the first one and and not winning and then in two thousand five indeed winning so maybe a little flavor about sort of the dynamics around these two leagues the hills role in all of that world series. Interesting in twenty three the first year eastern collar league the there was still no relationship with the negro nationally. They were still fighting so there was no world series played in twenty three. It's almost like parallel to the white major leagues in one thousand nine hundred nineteen o two where there was no world series until nineteen reaching agreement. So the same thing was happening and then eagerly leasing the twenties so in twenty four they finally kind of Made peace spoke the peace pipe. Or whatever and say okay. We're gonna put on a world series which they did in twenty four and it was between hildale in the kansas city monarchs and seemed at that point that you know the negro leagues are really doing what they're supposed to be doing. I mean we have segregation baseball and like we have. The african american community has established a fairly stable institution. That's doing things like the major leagues or the high minors the problem. The world series just never never worked as they should have worked financially. I mean there was obviously great baseball player in some of these theories. But what what they struggled with was was fan support Even that very i eagerly world series. They shuffled it between venue venue. I think they played in baltimore. They played in philly back to kansas city. And i think they might have played. And i think they made chicago. I think they played four different locales so rather than doing it the way the major league did it of course to locales to home home home in a way They would shuffle from venues venue. The support of the series with ten to wayne because it would go on so long..

"So i'm guessing bolden then is is starting to recognize that you know we got to be more control of our own destiny so to speak and if we can't sort of sort of get over the current process then perhaps maybe we should. We should perhaps take our marbles and go elsewhere with them right. So i i guess. How would you describe the team in the negro national league in those early years. And then the i guess what. It was the buildup to a more dedicated eastern league that they jumped to or help create and nineteen. Twenty-three i mean i'm guessing that bolden saw that foster had put something together. I mean ear. National inc was flawed. Don't get me wrong But the early years of the ingraham. We're probably some of the best run. Negro leagues ever as far as the number of games played the attention to the schedule and statistics and things like bad and they did relatively well. I mean the twenties fairly strong twenties fairly strong period financially for negro league baseball so i think bowling probably saw that. There's there is more money to be made and something else was happening to which we can touch on. His semi professional baseball was slowly starting to fade as far as it being able to pay Hildale had made its money as we talked earlier by playing all white teams during the week. He's white semi pro teams and they could make a decent amount of money doing that but by the early twenties they're starting to die off. There's many complex reasons for why it was having people say radio was part of the reason why these local teams start stayed So i think bolden probably said okay. We can't totally survive on the way we were before with with the reliance on these wight semi pros have to replace that with more games played against professional teams in league situation. So i think that's what pushed him to form the eastern colored league at the end of nineteen twenty to nineteen twenty three season and some your listeners might find it interesting the the choice of words you know you have the negro national league and the eastern colored league..

That were distinct and and use the h. logo or asia letter in their in their But there really wasn't much of a logo per se perhaps like some of these other clubs a did so maybe at some point. "18 86. At first, the Southern League of Colored Base ball ist Became the first Negro League Wasn't until 1920 that an organized African American League. The Negro National League, survived the full season. Three years later, the Eastern colored League was formed. And the following year In 1924, the Kansas City Monarchs defeated the Philadelphia Hill Dales in the first colored world. Syriza's Students of baseball will tell you, James Cool. Papa Bell was the smoothest and fastest outfielder ever to play. Josh Gibson, who averaged Batting average of 3 62 over a 16 year career was the best offensive threat of the Times. And, of course, no list would be complete without the legendary pitcher Leroy Satchel Paige, the greatest pitcher of the national of the Negro Leagues, and the elevation of Jackie Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1945. Not only opened the doors for other African American players, it also signaled the end of the Negro leagues. And the story goes. Very short story. Okay, that James Cool Papa Bell was so fast, he could turn the light switch off on the wall and be in bed under the covers before the room got dark. That's quick Spurs flashback..
