That's why Ron Wellman and part is no longer the athletic director at the school. He was responsible for that hiring in that contract and it serves as a as a lesson to really any idea out there if the agents want to get it done they can go ahead and get it done but for the most part this is. This should be a This should just be. It should be a warning sign. I mean beyond anything else. Until Death: Raynella Leath
"As a child. Rinella grew up in a small community outside Knoxville Tennessee. Rinella was the second child. She had an older sister named flow. Anna and two younger siblings. Marcus and Robin her parents do e Annie met in college. They married after. Dewey had enlisted in the Army Air Corps. Any Finish College. Do we want a purple heart? And after the war he continued his education. So Anne worked as a schoolteacher and do he worked for the US Department of Energy so he made some good use at his time. Back in college had a masters degree in Chemistry and Physics and he was very invested in a safe storage of nuclear waste. Sounds like a smart guy. Yeah absolutely and Rinella grew up in this ideal environment. It was virtually crime free. And this was a town where she and her siblings could. Just hop on their bikes. Anytime go downtown. See a movie or use the Community Swimming Pool. It was kind of one of those pre planned communities for the nuclear power plant scientists. So the kids didn't even know what their parents position was at the company. But that's pretty much what it all revolved around but they were also religious rain. Ls saying in the choir of the Baptist Church and when she was in elementary school her classes were segregated but her high school actually became the first integrated school in the south in nineteen fifty five so at least in part because of the large population of these government scientists. Rinella schools were quite exceptional. The science were excellent of course and the children began learning a second language by the time they were in the second grade so it really gave her a lot of advantages in life her. She was always at the top of her class and was taking all the advanced courses she could. She's also in the marching band spinner weekends at Football Games drive INS and other activities common in the nineteen fifties. Yes he just watch American graffiti. That was kind of what it was like. Right right yeah. Drinking was less of a problem than in most communities because this county they lived in was completely dry. Yeah that's amazing how to combat alcohol. Well I mean if you really want the alcohol you could drive out of the county and get it sure but it's certainly made it harder on the kids in a lot of their parents didn't even have booze in the house which. I don't know about you but the first blues I had I snuck from my parents. Liquor cabinet will. It's where you get it right exactly and there's not just a dry county but a lot of lot of Baptist people and they don't look at alcohol. Is that interesting anyway now? I think it might be a no no for them completely. It certainly not encouraged note therefore remark so after high school. Rinella went to East Tennessee State University as a nursing student while they're Rinella got good grades in competed in rifle shooting. Yeah funny when you think about Ed. Just the way said that. I'm thinking here's a student right getting the grid. So but yeah. He's a marksman let's Tennessee. It's the south right and. I think there's you know more familiarity with guns in the south or is that just a a cliche. No I think that's probably true. Yeah we'll why she was there. This is when she met her. First husband. William Edward Dos it and he went by Ed but young ad had a very different childhood. He had many losses in his life. And I guess the most dramatic I would say was his mom's death. This happened on Easter morning. Nineteen fifty six when Little Edie was just eight years old and he woke up in the morning to find his mother on the floor beside his bed. Dead of a heart attack and just two months later. His Dad died from cancer. So Eddie was an orphan and he ended up moving in with his aunt. And uncle was kind of tough Lou eight-year-old cured get up in the morning and mom's dead on the floor. Can you imagine it's just? It's horrible so he had a much rougher upbringing then ray Nella dead but he was just a real go-getter and as a child. Everyone said he was exceptionally kind in high school. He played some football but he also worked on the school newspaper and he was a member of several clubs. Once he was in his senior year he was given the award for the Best School Spirit. Then he went to college on a football scholarship and he continued to date his high school sweetheart in his freshman year. Everyone thought these two would get married but then he met right now at college in broke up with the girlfriend not an unusual phenomenon. Guess so ED graduated with a business degree. He and Renault got married when she was a senior in college. Now the story I always liked Nell is mom. She didn't approve of that and she apparently knew how to hold a grudge. But she didn't speak to Ed for the first thirteen years of their marriage. Well that's serious grudge holding right. Guess so you really love my mother-in-law. She doesn't talk to me. But when you look at the big picture it kind of makes you think Did Rain Nella get some of that kind of personality from holding grudges or well at decided? He wanted to be a lawyer and he started taking classes at the University of Tennessee Law School in Nineteen Sixty nine ray. Nella began working as a nurse after she graduated in nineteen seventy two at graduated from law school. He had inherited his family's farm. Both of his parents were deceased so he would call himself a farmer and a country lawyer. But it's funny he always said I'm a farmer I and a lawyer second even though he would really end up being very successful as a lawyer did a good job. He had quite a career absolutely really popular as well. It worked in criminal defending people in need. Yeah he liked to help the poor people. Then in nineteen seventy eight. Renaudot gave birth to their first child. Maggie dice it and they then moved to the family farm. Young family lived in a mobile home on the property. As Ed built a new house they worked hard. He built the house entirely from lumber from his own trees. He had an architect who designed the home and he had a contractor friend who advised him on how to do things but basically he built this place. So that's pretty impressive to me. Sure is in nineteen eighty two. When a district attorney general retired decided to run for that job and the funny thing is once. He entered the election. His mother-in-law had a change of heart. Suddenly Ed was an okay guy. Who's now worthy of my attention right? Which really got crate? But she enjoyed this attention and she would be photographed with him at campaign events as much as possible. But Ed took it in stride you now. That's my mother-in-law. Whatever I'm going to be nice to. Everybody and Rinella was a good wife. She was working really hard to help them with this campaign. So it's not like they were on the outsor- anything. The marriage was really good for a long time. And when Ed Din win this election the family celebrated the local. Sheriff gave Ed a five shot. Pistol telling him now. He needed a gun to protect himself. Because he's putting away bad guys and they might come after him but that wasn't a gun guy then the next year at an Rinella had a son William Edward Dawson Junior. So now the family had big Edie and little Edie Ed had a secretary named K and she was married to a guy named Steve Walker and the two couples K. In Stephen Ed. Ray Noah were friendly and they did some socializing from time to time when K had a son who they named Kevin in nineteen eighty four. She left her position and ED's office and Henry now had a third child whose name Katie born in nineteen eighty five so rinella never visited the walkers but ed ended up spending a lot of time there and you might ask why they spent a Lotta time why. He spent a lot of time there because he was screwing k. Well I'm just thinking you know. Things must have been not perfect with he and Rinella by then if he's out having an affair her maybe he was just bored who knows but K. was very fond of him and that's part of the issue. A lot of people think K. Was really in love with Ed. But he wasn't going to leave rain Allah and we don't know if that's because it wouldn't look good if he was afraid of her. Maybe we don't know. But then in nineteen eighty AK had a second son who she and her husband named Kyle and although her husband Steve Did know about it until years later kyle was actually Ed's biological child the product of this affair kind of love child. We didn't know about birth control too. Well I'm sure there was some knowledge of it but who knows. Maybe she wanted to have a baby kinda nasty to pass it off as her husband. Well I don't know Dick. I almost think it's kind. Maybe you don't agree with me but I almost think it's kind of a kind decision. What good is it going to do their family now? They have two sons. What good is it if she tells her husband? The son is not biologically yours and maybe she didn't even know one hundred percent. That's a possibility but I mean I'm just one of these people. I think sometimes not most the time but sometimes holding back. A harsh truth can be an act of love controversial. But it's how I feel I'm GONNA leave it at that okay now. Nineteen Ninety right now retired from nursing and she concentrated on raising her children and managing the family farm. Dave Leaf was a nice man. Who's a friend of ED? And he had a pool. Nello take your children. Today's house to swim in the summer other than that. There was really no connection between Renault and Dave while they were very different people. I mean she really valued education and Dave was a high school dropout. Who worked as a barber? Not that. There's anything wrong with that but it's a much simpler job than ads. Still Dave was very likeable and well known in the community is a good guy. You know that same year ED started to have stomach pains now. He said in a board meeting for local farmers that he had the meanest away from the world. Who's trying to kill him even though he didn't smile and he said everyone's still took it as a joke. They all understood. That Renault is a real force. Probably wasn't the easiest woman to live with. Now I mean what can you say about right Allah from what we know. She was wearing the pants in her home. No matter who she was married to and you didn't want across her she could hold a grudge dislike her mom. I guess but then tragedy struck in October of nineteen ninety one because that was admitted into the hospital he thought it was just for an appendectomy but during that surgery a Denno carcinoma was found on his appendix and too small intestine so they did some further exploratory surgery and they found that he had cancer. That had metastasized to several organs. It was just all over his abdomen so there was no chance of curing him of that

"Great versatility they can really score excellent transition no no no no no what you got in the final four despite moving the needle they can get to the final the measure with OB top and you've got a chance ESPN radio ESPN happened Sirius XM channel eighty date nights Braden gall and it is that time of year we're in March and obviously the NBA's heating up but today we've got NC double a tournament basketball coming up here soon conference championship week of course one of the best weekends and weeks of college hoops will sort of got started yesterday in the mountain west Utah state upsetting San Diego state a team is probably on the bubble the Aggies now clinch a spot with the automatic bid right here in Nashville I will brag a little bit here the OVC conference champs of course Belmont they beat Murray state yesterday in a fantastic so down there going dancing today you had three more bids sealed with the big south winners Winthrop of course their teammates routinely in the NC double a tournament Bradley wins the Missouri valley and of course liberty in the A. sun and this is one of the best weeks almost all of this of course on ESPN one of the best weeks for college basketball fans I think it's on par with the NC double a tournament and when you have the phrase win or go home I'm sorry Dave I'm I'll sign me up man yeah but I mean that's why but that's what he had to double a tournament is always going to overshadow that some with you I love conference championship week especially when a lot of these teams that are not gonna be pulling facing each other for the second or third time and and you get those rivalries and we were just talking about how today's clippers Lakers game was really chippy you can get some of that shipping this because it's a little bit more personal in these conference championship games in any of these conference tournaments the quality of basketball is going to be fantastic but for so many of these teams it's not win or go home because there's going to be another step you're going to have another opportunity to play in another opportunity to potentially advance in a different tournaments that's the true winner go home and when the stakes get that high that's why we're gonna you know get excited about the NC double a tournament and while I think the quality of basketball is going to be fantastic this week it just doesn't quite add up to the NC double a referee if I hear you of course tomorrow on ESPN you've got the so con championship game East Tennessee state and Wofford that one at seven o'clock eastern time and end of again just conference championship games are just fantastic theatre it's great television you got kids fighting for their lives trying to get the NC double a tournament of course one of them today was liberty as they beat Lipscomb to win the Atlantic sun the second straight year and head coach Ritchie McKay the liberty head basketball coach joining us here on gay not any S. P. N. radio and you win today the A. sun tournament over Lipscomb your team goes the NC double a tournament can you explain what the locker room was like after the victory today the index yeah it was you know this year was different than last year because last year no one really expected us to get there let's commit such a really good team and it may have been there the previous year and well we took their places we had because we got off to a decent start we were fourteen and one of the last unbeaten before we lost as you bend the expectations kept rising and honestly we felt the pressure of being the favorite and so I think there was a sense of relief in a locked room but there's also a great sense of joy an accomplishment because I think it was it was way harder to to get back to the dance this year there was last year so I think I think our guys were pretty happy so now they do on the A. sun championship back to back years what can you learn from last year's NC double a tournament appearance that you think you can carry over to this year yeah I get a good question I think you know once you when you're there and you experience the the term for the first time you probably are a little awestruck and so I I think we got over that after beating Mississippi state and we played a really good Virginia Tech team and actually led at halftime but we just didn't finish it without it and I think our guys were only we were happy to be there I just think we lost a good distance of execution that you need for forty minutes to win a variance in the tourney so having a thirteen it's got three fifth year seniors and in in one of the regular senior at I just think we've got a a group that's been there they use their old so hopefully that we can rely on their maturity and in play for forty minutes in round one and see what happens from there liberty head basketball coach rich McKay joining us here after they win the A. sun conference tournament championship today includes a bit in the NC double a tournament that's sixty one wins I believe if I'm if I'm counting correctly coach I was told there's no math but sixty one wins over two years and obviously a team grows and learns through all of that how important is it for programs like yours to have a culture of winning and success when you get to be in NC double a tournament when you're gonna face teams that maybe lose you know thirteen twelve thirteen fourteen times in in in in a regular season yep brain we eat yeah you know and I I listen to frequently you you you know in college basketball there's the high majors and then there's some some mid and low majors and I think when any leader if you reside in is really competitive but those programs I like so much who in Vermont you can see their their use and there's a host of others are used to winning I think when that when that happens you guys have an expectation and with that expectation as long as you continue to commit to that process of getting better I think you had a chance to show up in any venue on any stage and and believe that there is an opportunity if you maximize it so I feel like we're we're we're getting close to that I'm not sure we we're over the hump yet but I do think we have a belief you know with with Tony Bennett for six years at Virginia for coming back to liberty and pass on build a program from the prefabricated debate we we we established there such a defensive identity that I think I think it helped us be competitive early and we try to do the same at liberty so although we're the JV version we we at least schools obviously have some similar coach okay we do appreciate it always a pleasure congratulations on the tournament championship in a best of luck in the NC double a tournament enjoys selection Sunday by the way yes thank you Brian gave you guys enjoy the night the appreciate your mail Ritchie McKay liberty head basketball coaches they clinch a bid and there's just certain things in sports gay they just sort of warm your heart a little bit and you know I've no rooting interest here for any of these teams and in the small tournaments but these guys and we'll talk with Sam Merrill Utah state senior guard went for twenty seven of course last night and it just just an amazing sort of experience for young people athletics at its purest form winning a chance to play into what turned yeah I mean we were just talking about it and and and I've mentioned for a lot of these teams can in the upper conference you know the the upper conferences the big ten's the big east's you know that the pac twelve big twelve reading those teams are gonna have an opportunity to play later a lot of these other teams they're not there so they are playing for their lives the games that you're gonna be watching on ESPN tomorrow and Thursday night those mid major conference championship games those are huge huge games for these guys because for them it actually is win or go home versus you know the dukes of the world yeah okay have to quote loses in the ACC tournament doesn't matter for them but yet for liberty for Utah state those are huge program defining victories to get to the NC double a tournament yeah no question about it and special thanks to coach okay there's gonna have a heck of a couple of days off in August of course on game that appear to be a shell Pennzoil performance on ESPN radio presented by progressive insurance did not so Braden gall and and in the Senate there's obviously huge news today the Lakers have a huge weekend one twelve one of three winners over the clippers today with a big win over Yanis on Friday night and that's obviously center stage we got college basketball kicking off across it as far as the the conference tournaments this week and we've already seen drama right with Utah state beating San Diego state probably knocks the Aztecs off the one mind makes them a two seed so it's it's going to be a ton of fun and but there's also some big news in in a research project on an online petition consultation are only available in the position to terms restrictions appropriate subscription required see website for full details and information Hey guys good news the outrageously expensive a little blue pill is now generic.

Yeah Yeah I love everything spicy. Kenny Chesney with us again. His latest album songs for the saints is available. And if you want tour dates you go to Kenny. Chesney Dot Com explained to me. How much of your roots is tied up? How much of your roots are tied up in the idea that you give a lot of your money? Money Away with success to some of the people who wouldn't normally get money from the star of the shows like I don't want to embarrass you here but you give away a ton of money to the people behind the scene so like explain to me how and why that came to be well we start. I started this thing every year. No I've got I'm out there on the road with a lot of people that work really hard and those guys they get there before the ship early in the morning and late late at night and I started this thing called merge lottery and we take one stadium show a month and I take all the all the money that I make that night and what that means is the from the t shirts the hats whatever the money we make that night and I give it we. We put all the names of everybody that works for me a Sombrero and I we shake it up whole at a name out of the hat and give all the money we make for the march that night. WHOA so the most that can wait a minute? You're talking about a quarter. Wait a minute you're talking about like a quarter million dollars aren't you. That's yeah we played the seat. The seahawks football stadium one year. And yeah the merchant would have been close to that maybe a little over that and the next week we pulled out a name and they got it you know but what they started doing is not taking the money themselves. They ended up dividing it out throughout the whole crew in the tour you know so I would have grabbed all I want to cowboys stadium holding onto that one. They spend a lot of money in Dallas. I want to keep that. So is it true that you shower three times a day. You don't like bars of soap. Why do I showered go to get up when I get up I shower and then after I work out before I start my day shower again and then I have to shower before I go to bed and I get? I like to feel clean when I go to bed with the soap though. Yeah but no soap always had this weird thing about soap. I can't explain it. Yeah let me ask you a question because I love body wash our talking my language But body wash as well. You're rich so this is different. Body washes expensive right. Talk Therapy Stress Relief Body wash going on the upper half of my body because then I could smell it then. LOWER-HALF I used some other body to body washes at have in the shower work and it also depends obviously like you share a couple of times a day maybe late at night instead of the stress. One lillies the sleep tireless. And you stop please. You have asked the only only a couple of questions the entire week of a guest. And you've just ask Kenny Chesney. Hey Give me information about how you shower. Also I have a follow up question that I asked invasive. How tell me about your shoring habits but then a follow up question defense? You're there were here. We're sitting next to Kenny. and He's join join the conversation a little bitter. He'll back there wasn't really a question kept talking about showering habit.

I went to school at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City and played a Mexican restaurant draw three nights a week and I just played for tips. You know I was playing some songs that I had written in my apartment that nobody wanted to hear and then songs but my heroes heroes and I would get paid whatever tips I made and all the docket eat a pretty good for a college student at the time and so what kind of tips are we talking about there when you say on the on the best and the worst nights what are you bringing home the worst nights would-be about twenty bucks. The best night's would be a couple of hundred and so how what happens happens next like one of the things that need to happen for Kenny. Chesney what happens next is I graduated East Tennessee state and then I'm mood moved to Nashville to be a songwriter. And it just went from there I was I. I always knew I wanted to do what I'm doing now but I it might take a while but I was I was engulfed in creating engulfing songwriting and that's where all this started. And then I went on the road in nineteen ninety-three and I'm still just kind of you know people ask me all the time for you. Know can you give me some advice on how to make it in the back of my brain. I'm going and they're never gonNA make it because you don't do it. Make it you do it just because that's what you do. And so that's that's the best way I can explain rapid assery down along the way right there has to be some. There's no I'm not saying it was all good moments because there was a lot look planned the places that we play now we were very blessed and fortunate. You know but but it hasn't always been this way we walk. We opened the tour this year at the Dallas Cowboys Football Stadium. We close it in Foxborough the Patriots Stadium Stadium. And so but I promise you guys. It hasn't always. We have always been and been in a place in our life to go play these places Kenny. I read here. We all love food food as you can tell from the display here on the table you have. What is your guilty food pleasure? Because I think it's going to the delight most of the guys back in our studio. Well I I love you know. I'm an emotional eater right so but I love. I love Italian I love I love Italy. I love red wine. I Love I but I don't get to you love Pasta when I'm training and go on the road so when I'm off the road I I eat a lot of carbohydrates grilled cheeses man. Why do real cheese two I love it right. Hundred percent one is go ahead. Make the perfect grilled cheese sandwich for us. help us out the perfect grilled cheese sandwich. I don't know it's gotta be Texas Toast Right and always helps one hundred percent and you know a couple of different kinds of cheese and I always like to put some Apollo Pianos in there. At All Y.. Yeah I love everything spicy. Kenny Chesney with us again. His latest album songs for the Saints Aints is available. And if you want tour dates you go to Kenny. Chesney Dot Com explained to me. How much of your roots is tied up? How much of your roots are tied up in the idea that you give a lot of your money away with success to some of the people who wouldn't normally get money from the star of the shows like I don't want to embarrass you here but you give away a ton of money to the people behind the scene so like explain to me how and why that came to be deep? Well we start. I started this thing every year. I've got I'm out there on the road with a lot of people that work really hard and those no those guys they get there before the ship you know early in the morning and late there late at night and I started this thing called merge lottery and we take one on stadium show a month and I take all the all the merge money that I make that night and what that means is the from the t shirts hats whatever the money we make that night and I give it. We put all the names of everybody that works for me in a Sombrero and I we shake it up and I'll pull a name out of the storm Beryl the hat and I give them all the money we make for murky at night. WHOA so the most that can wait a minute? You're talking about a quarter. Wait a minute you're talking like a quarter million dollars aren't you. That's yeah When we played the the seahawks football stadium one year and yeah the merchant would have been close to that maybe a little over that and the next week we pulled out a name and they got it you know but what they started doing is not taken? The money themselves they they ended up dividing it out throughout the whole crew in the Hauteur You know so I would have grabbed all waste holding onto that one. They spend a lot of money. So is it true that you shower three times a day but you don't like bars of soap. What do I showered shower to get up when I get up I shower and then after I work out before I start my day. Yeah a shower again and then I have to shower before I go to bed. 'cause I I. I'd like to feel cleaning with soap though. Yeah but no soap always had this weird thing about soap. I explain it. You let me ask you a question because I love body wash our talking my language but body wash as as you know. Well you're rich so this is different body washes expensive right so I'll get like a little Roma therapy stress relief body wash going on the upper half of my body because then I could smell it. But then lower-half I used some other other body wash. I have two three body washes that had in the shower and then it also depends obviously like you share a couple of times a day maybe late at night instead of the stress. One lillies the sleep. They get tired and you stop please. You have asked only a couple of questions the entire week of a guest. And you've just ask Kenny Chesney. Hey Give me information about about how you shower. Also I have a follow up question. It's not I convey Sibley how tell me about your show airing habits but then a follow up question it. Billy's defend veg- you're there we're here we're sitting next to Kenny. And he's joining the commerce asset this little long the better as it wasn't really a question kept talking just wanted to tell out of more right into his card Stugatz this libertad show with STU GODS ON ESPN radio bill. I mean there's a better go back there McFarland slowly just providing background music for all your banter Thank you Kenny. Gee We always appreciate that report ten. Let's do this. Let's do this if you don't mind I want to ask Booger McFarland. Just a couple of questions and so if you would be kind enough to just play some light in the background that might convey the right mood we would appreciate it and then I'll get back to you in a couple of minutes. It's if you don't mind so booger this season. What did you learn? What did you learn about the job that you didn't probably the speed at which the game moves and like that was not.

"There are no two schools closer to each other in division one than Belmont and Lipscomb and they used to share the same conference the sun now Belmont in the ovi- see, but they still play twice every every every November and December Belmont won both of those games. Now. The other losses for Lipscomb. There's only one bad one at dunk city, otherwise Tuta liberty. That's an tournament team. And then four at Louisville seventeen at Clemson. And then just to Belmont want. So Lipscomb actually has a pretty compelling resume. But it's behind Belmont in the pecking order, I can't foresee I would love to be shocked by this parish. Because you know, what the say it ain't happened. This ain't happening. I know Bill has got a real shot anything below Belmont ain't hat. I know. So I hear you. And yet when we look around at the at the at the major conference candidates there. It's just a bummer because he loves see because you know, what the Ason the OVC and the so con- like we just don't have years. Like this where you have those kind of one bid leagues producing tops, multiple top seventy teams and in the so con-, we had three of them firm and goes down to UNC, Greensboro, firm and was in poems bracket before that outcome. I don't know if he is updated as we are recording this podcast or not no Firmin. They're not helped by the fact that loyal Chicago got knocked out early. They're not helped by the fact that Villanova which started to make that win. Look really good came back down to earth, which is unfortunate. I already mentioned some of the scheduling things they ran up against the finish twenty five and seven the losses at LSU at east. Tennessee State top seventy five Ken pomp team against UNC, Greensboro twice that might end up being the auto bid, obviously at Wofford and then home to Sanford, which is which is a bit brutal. They had to schedule a few Nandi ones. Furman was boosted higher in some brackets tonight. I actually expected before the loss here. But, unfortunately, if if Wofford beats Greensboro, you talk about a team with with a real solid resume. That's not enough, Greensboro losses are LSU Kentucky Wofford twice infirm and those were on the road. Like, Greensboro has a really strong case. They're just not gonna get three out of the so con-. I wish they did. But shout to Furman shout. Lifts I wanted to give a little bit of love. I I would love perish. I would love to see either of those schools pop up and be getting sent to Dayton. It would just it would stunned me. I can't see how that's going to happen in a just world. I think they get sent there. But it's just not going to be enough. Belmont. I would rank them right now. I would rank them Belmont. I I think firm, and then Lipscomb, but there's a little bit of gap between one and two and three there. Yeah. Firm analysts, and they're just not going to get there for all of the reasons that are well documented a Belmont things. Got a real shot because it's got not only resume again. I can't I can't stress that enough. They went five and three quarter. One quarter two opportunities-florida went six twelve in the same opportunities, Florida. Thirty three percent winning percentage in those games. Belmont sixty three percent winning percentage in those games. So if you put Florida and over Belmont, all you're doing a saying, we'll Florida had more opportunities because they play in a power five leak. It's based on. Nothing more than league affiliation. And your point about Belmont. Being perfect undefeated and quadrant..

"They don't win that. When you get Wofford and east, Tennessee State and second game, look east, Tennessee State almost beat than home. Probably should've beaten offered at home. This is an eastern innoc- state team has been very good every year Forbes is really good coach very high on of the coach. I think that they certainly could be Wofford, and it would not be surprising to me. I think you know fact that they have a week five seat. They're a game that they should easily easily win and their first game helps quite a bit. Because you know, if they don't play too good. I can probably still seek out a win. Get ready for walford Wofford. You know is a team that like you said there eighteen to know that they have quite a few close calls here in this conference. I don't think they're, you know, head and shoulders above everybody else as much as what some people think they may be and east. Tennessee State is a very dangerous team that the reason I like eastern Sinise state as a team that could be offered to they're the one team that can hang with uaw-ford when it comes to the glass, they're very good on the boards. They're actually better than offered rebounding. And and that's certainly a big positive because if you're getting beat up on the glass, and that team is very good. Your opponent is very good shooting three pointers as Wofford is then it's really hard to keep up, you know, because they're bang threes from from way downtown and then you've got them getting their off into rebound clearing every defense at board east. Tennessee State doesn't have that problem. They're very good on the glass or good defensive teams. I think he's gonna see states very tough. Matchup for them in that second game. Well, one of the reasons why we talk about the money line rollover is a situation like this east. Tennessee State is plus four hundred to win this conference tournament. And as you and I were talking earlier on off the air. You look at this game against Wofford this potential game.

"And it looks like underdogs have done better here in the last couple of years, then what they did before. So, you know, the the underdog statistics that I gave you before or not really strong. But recently they've done pretty well. And I think that makes sense based on I, you know, as we look at the landscape of 'em is right now. All right. So let's get into some game breakdown sear, and we'll go ahead and start actually on Thursday nights. I know we will look ahead to some weekend games here. But will also take a look at the Thursday night card game down in the so Conwy recently talked about the so con in one of our conference breakdowns. I think that was maybe it was either last Friday or last Monday, one of the two about Wofford and east. Tennessee State is the game that you have your eye on for Thursday night. I was hoping you were gonna ask me you weren't gonna ask me when we talked about that. I really I really don't know. It's all kind of going together but Wofford in east Tennessee State Wofford is undefeated in the conference so far this year. They're the best team in the league. But I don't know that they're that much better than east Tennessee, I'm carrying this line will be we'll Wofford favorite here on the road. I'm not sure they will be. I see Ken palm has them projected to win. That's when by point. I think if I had to take his side here like an state, you couldn't see states that good team as far as defensively, they think create some turnover there good on the glass or a member of talking about that. When we spoke about them in this conference walford very reliant on the point. I mean, they're very good at it. They should forty point eight percent in the conference shooting. Forty three point one percent from three point range, so very very good shooting team. But I mean, this is a team. Team and east Tennessee State. That's very good defensively. Very well coached, you know, I think that this could be a spot where Wofford gets tripped up. You know, it wouldn't surprise me at all. I mean clearly Wofford's in offense of juggernaut. But you know, they're up against a really good defense here. It's important to point out that these two teams split the series last year and each team warm on the road. So those teams have proven they can win on the road, you know, Wofford's better than they were last year there quite a bit better than they were last few mainly because their defense improved a lot some last season. He's Tennessee day to team that is also somewhat better this year than they were year ago primarily because you know, they're rebounding really really well and they're a little bit better on offense. And they were last season. I as I said before I really think east Tennessee coaches underrated done a very good job every year replacing quite a bit to me. This is one of those spots where Wofford. Word comes in here undefeated in the league, they're gonna lose at some point in this league. I'd be really surprised if they don't this looks like a spot that that could be there. When you look when these teams last played they played on December first longtime ago, very very early start to conference play. Then. In fact, these seems got back into the non-conference portion of the season right after that Wofford won that game seventy nine to sixty two. They did win that game at home and also frees Tennessee State that game gave up one point one six seven points per possession their worst defensive effort of the season. So maybe they do button it up here a little bit in this particular spot. But as you mentioned for Wofford, and this is something you can look at with UNC Greensboro here in this conference as well. I don't think Wofford's really been tested on the road. I mean, they did blow out Greensboro for Greensboro only loss, but Greensboro, I think by all accounts is kind of a smoke and mirrors team in this conference right now. You know? I mean, I've Greensburg record and league better than what they are. I don't think there are bad team. But but yeah, I mean, this is going to be the toughest or Wofford profit road game yet. And you know, you couldn't say doesn't exactly come into this game in any kind of bad spot..

"Well, yeah. And it's interesting because there aren't a lot of teams that get to the free throw line here in this conference. But yet it's still predominantly and over conference. Right, right. Yeah. It's a so many three pointers being made. So many jump shots that are open. Not too many people getting to the line too, many teams fouling all that much. But you know, when you're shooting that well, you don't even need the trips to the line. You know, you can look at these conference by conference in its unique in that. There's some conferences in order to get their points is going to need to be a ton of fouls. You know, I think of like the AFC I think of the big west that stuff like that, you know, where they're really not that good shooters. But they do a lot of hacking. That's not the case here in the so-called are it. So as we look at this year's version of the so-called, you've got Wofford at the top Dera perfect ten and Owen conference play UNC greens borough coming on very strong conference play they're nine and one each eight and to here so far that a little bit of a drop on down from firm and the rest of the teams, how do you stack up the so con- this year? Kyle yo I'll say how I was back up and then. Just give a brief tidbit about some of them here Wofford, certainly the most consistent team in the league. I will say that the thing that concerns me about them is they're so relying on jump shots. And we talk about that when it comes conference tournaments on which honestly is not as far away as it seems always look forward to those shows. But Wasserman a talk about conference flight I saw that tougher USA's last regular season conference game is February sixteenth. It's it's insane. How close these things are already. Yeah. Yeah. Conference USA is doing some really strange scheduling things, which I don't think either one of us can really figure out, but the conference tournaments really are not that far away. And that's just kind of a a point that that emphasizes that. Yeah. I mean Wofford would scare me a little bit in the in the conference tournament. Just because they're so reliant on jump shots east. Tennessee state. I would put second look they have a tremendous coach. I think he's probably going to have a bigger job sometime soon. I'm really impressed that the job that Forbes's done here. That you know, consistently east. Tennessee State is losing a lot of people big time turnover. And they're still there yet again, very good team. They played good defense. They can force turnovers just inefficient team over all Furman. They're not as good as they looked in the non conference, but they're still a solid team. They've been a little bit inconsistent here in so conflict UNC, Greensboro. But they haven't played the toughest schedule so far in the so Khan, and they're going to have some tougher games coming up, but they're interesting in that they're very fast paced, but they're pretty good on defense. So it's it can be tricky about their totals usually stay away from Greensboro totals Sanford been very close in most of their losses is the team that has not far off at all certainly quality team better than than their record. Would look the next team. I say Mercer Mercer thing about them is in the past. I've really liked taking unders with Mercer this year. They've been involved in. A lot more high scoring games. Fortunately, I haven't that any Mercer total so far this year..

"I got Hajek got into it with I believe of Karl has the referee, and there's a pretty epic sound byte about that. When if you go back and look at Scott Padgett talking about Karl Hess just coming up on him. Like he wanted to fight or something that it's you know, it was a game that Sanford lost in heartbreaking fashion, and then everything fell apart for Stanford right after that game. They lost a western. Carolina team. They never should've lost to then they lost Chattanooga team that they definitely shouldn't loss to either. Now, Sanford pulls it together, they win at Furman on Saturday firm and certainly quality team. We know that firm it was in the top twenty five earlier this year, they were never wanna top twenty five but their quality team here. So calling Sanford beats them then has a home game against east, Tennessee State. I think this is a massive game for the same for team. I think they'll put everything they've got into this game east. Tennessee states have very high quality team. They've only lost UNC Greensboro in the conference. They haven't played haven't played Wofford yet and the conference so that'll be a big game as well. But I think that Sanford wants this when really bad not say that you Tennessee State doesn't want it. But the way they lost that first game a very very tough to take east. Tennessee State is better on defense. They're very good on the glass. That's the. Advantage over Sanford is they're going to get a lot of second champ opportunities. And like I said I really don't like now betting team is going to lose on the boards that badly. So that's my my catty out here with Sanford. I would wanna get some points here at home thinking that be close game. But I think this one will probably be about pick them not even just that win over firm and on the road for Sanford. But that came you know, what about less than forty eight hours after losing to Wofford by a point in overtime on the road. So big rallying point there on Saturday for Sanford good week of practice here. You kind of wonder though with that Saturday spot. Yeah. It's revenge gaming, it's western Carolina. But it's sandwiched between this ATS you game. And then UNC Greensboro that looks like a spot where I would not want to lay a big number with Sanford here coming up on Saturday. Yeah. I agree. I mean like you said it's a revenge game. So they're gonna wanna win that game. But are they gonna wanna win that game by March? I think that's the question. I'd be surprised if they lose the western Carolina, but you're probably going to be laying fifteen points. And it also depends on how this game is far this game is as to whether they should be as focused. I mean, if they win that game against he's Tennessee states. I think it makes it a worse spot for that western Carolina game if they lose east, Tennessee State, maybe they take their frustration out on western Carolina. But I definitely something that to keep an eye on. Well, maybe that's a spot that shows up in your situation article over bang, the book dot com, and you can check out here today. All right one more game. We go down to conference USA. We'd a lot of success with conference USA last week. We'll see if we can do it again here this week for UAB and middle Tennessee State. Yeah. We've talked about middle. Tennessee State several times here on the show. You know, this is a team that has played a really tough schedule. I mean, they have played the thirty fifth of schedule in the country were third non conference schedule as far as how tough it was. They got a couple of wins. Then they go on the road and leaves to rice North, Texas. They play UAB here. We talked about you ABC fence not being as good as they look last week..

Here's congresswoman Kirsten cinema ahead of Republican Martha mcsally fifty to forty seven percent that's close and in the Tennessee US Senate race that looked like he'd been slipping away from Democrats. That was surprising new poll from east Tennessee State university conducted in late October found the Republican House member, Marsha Blackburn, tied with the former very popular democratic governor. This of course, is what brought us Edison, and. political historians in the future. We'll call the Taylor swift effect. Forty four percent to forty four percent Bredesen's has done something really interesting Heidi. Nationally. He is he is uniquely independent. You don't usually hear somebody. That's a member of a party is openly critical of the party. Unless of course, they're Claire mccaskill, and then she just called some people in our own party. Crazy. Right. What you're saying this and number of races as well. Jos? I went around to different districts at the local level for House Democrats who are running in these more conservative districts that they are trying to distance themselves from the national party there. For instance, not at all shy about saying that they don't support Nancy Pelosi, which was the case when I visited Virginia seven so this should not be a race. As far as Tennessee is concerned. If Bredesen's pulls it out there, then I think we are truly looking at a wave election because Republicans have already pretty much counted out a lot of these rust belt states where Trump carried them like Pennsylvania the governor's race. There is pretty much gone. The governor's race in Michigan is pretty much gone. And so we're moving into the Republican rock ribbed territory here, I think we are looking at a wave election to see this. Close again, like we said in the previous segment, it's hard to know. How accurate this polling is because it does seem to swing on a day-to-day basis? But if Bredesen's pulls it out that's going to be pretty surprising. I think Tennessee and Texas. Republicans have to be the odds on favourite that said you've got to close poll there may be an outlier, but you have beta within three points in an Emerson poll this past week Republicans, of course, mocking him. Consistently. But if the Democrats are going to take back the Senate, they've got they've got to win North Dakota, Tennessee or Texas. We'll talk to Texas races is hotter than a dog on the fourth of July in Rila, exactly. So I think that. But Democrats are hoping for a Blue Wave tomorrow and political experts say Virginia could be one of the early indicators of that Heidi Priscilla will have that new reporting next morning chat joining us now, former aide to the George Bush White House and state departments that leads Jordan. "Paul today wouldn't finish no better than eight and four days still got to play, drew lock in Missouri and drew lock, looks good. They gotta play Benny Snell and Kentucky Kentucky's beat them for years in a row. So that right there is why despise Carolina. You give them an inch. They take them out. Well, they'll, they'll be pretty cocky if they can pull this off Saturday. Let me tell you one more thing. Another guy told me today. He said, if they win to be upset of the weekend in, it may be. But what happens if Kentucky wins Saturday night in the thirty one year losing streak will be to game at a weekend then will it. It depends. I hear. I I hear ya, but hey, good real quick. I'll let you go. All right. We look bad last week. We got east Tennessee State. We got you tip we rebound we go to and one I feel like when we get into the Florida game, I won't thoughts on this. We get into the Florida game. We compete. We show our heart. We show our spirits, hey, we may be upset and go three and one. I think Pruitt can turn it around your thoughts. I do too. I wasn't surprised. You aren't either. They were up against a really good team last weekend, and I never felt like they could. They could win the game. I thought maybe they could make it a little bit closer, but and they hung in there for a while, but the lay probably didn't help. But yeah, I think I think the Florida game does loom very large. I wanna see Florida's Saturday night against Kentucky before I get too hung up on that call but felt all along that was one of the most important games of the year for Tennessee. We will take a break more to come because Tennessee too many wins after that is my point. We will get to your calls. It's been a busy show. Daboh Sweeney started it all off. We have a couple of minutes to go before we finish it off. Listening to Paul finebaum show podcast. Michael Georgia, you are on the air. What do you say Michael? Hey, Paul second time, caller here. Glad to talk to you. Thank you. That's great, great stat. Good to hear from you, Mark in Tennessee. Go right ahead. Mark? Yes. Yeah, it's the first time caller. A little comparison if you. Okay. Would you say technique might be on par with a Dan Marino? Maybe Peyton Manning, but he's spirit the heart of his game little Joe Montana. Brett farve ish. Yeah. I mean, I know what you've well. I mean, listen. I was on a program yesterday were somebody compared him to LeBron James that at the same day. I think he's listening people that have seen them more than I have. And I'm talking about in practice, say that he's every bit as good as the expectations, but I'm just a little bit cautious before considering a quarterback to Joe Montana or Dan Marino. Hucker. Hey, just the way the release it's it's. So it's pretty special you? Right. I thought Traver. Trevor madij put it best today. I mean, he he was just, I'll call. I'll go back and read exactly when he said in a minute, but. It is a it is a thing of beauty to see. You may ended that traverse sad. Trevor said, when the ball leaves to his hands, it looks like it's rocket propelled with an internal guidance system..

"Isn't going, to be strong we know. That's, a given and the offense. Will drop back I. Think significantly with Texas Tech this year Number seventeen West Virginia versus Tennessee Ahead Tennessee yeah I wanna see what Jeremy Brooklyn do. Because this team's not without talent they. Add some key injuries last year can they be competitive right off, out of the gate East Tennessee State next week then you then you get end the Florida Georgia Auburn Alabama, South Carolina. Then it gets brutal can a steal one here. At least be competitive and take it down to. The wire and get. These playmakers does I have a few on offense the football I'm watching more Tennessee the, night, in, West, Virginia we wanna, to see what from Tennessee toughness competitiveness not. What we saw oftentimes over the last couple of years of the. Butch Jones era, where we saw things chaotic disarray guys out of position it was not. A well coach football team I would expect this to be one because of the discipline factor Jeremy. Pruitt, brings, but. They, don't have a shot Mel in this game here in Charlotte they don't. Have a shot because West Virginia offensively. Is just too darn good will Greer's got weapons Yup Cincinnati UCLA This one, male you, know it's the, chip Kelly debut at UCLA Wilton spayed out of former Michigan wolverine is going to be his starting. Quarterback this is a tricky. Game I think Cincinnati is not a bad football program and UCLA is not where they need to be in terms of. Talent this is going to, be I, think probably last place or next to last place, team in my, opinion in the Pac twelve, south this is a winnable game for. Cincinnati go on the, road go into that Rose Bowl and get UCLA UCLA I think we'll be. Fine they're not going to be fine this. Year I think this is a rough start for chip. Kelly what was the biggest criticism I had when Jim Moore was out at UCLA more junior coaching UCLA there. Wasn't there wasn't, talent what, Josh Josh Rosen didn't have a lot of. Help and it was evident when you come to draft day and you see what's happening. There and you look at how many guys are produced a one here and. There that's. It and I think the talent level was never where you got the big time quarterback and not enough awhile around. Them. Jordan, lastly was the main guy Where'd he go in the draft. In the. Late round so I think you look at personnel we'll chip Kelly bring.

"Eight, five, five, two, four to seven to eight five happy to have on the line. Dany shared Sheridan who's at the bow, revise where he's going to help place the ceremonial first bets in Mississippi Dany. How are you? Great lemme correct. You met and that crack staff didn't tell you this, but I'm in mobile, Alabama. I'll be at the bow revise tomorrow morning. About eleven and a bed noon. They're gonna open the sports book. So I'm not at the boat of is now. Okay. Well, but you will be there, right? We'll be there tomorrow. The Levin AM and it's very exciting. I bets in Mississippi today. I just wondered they expect what I expect, which is that this sports betting, I guess in Mississippi college football in particular will be extremely popular, very popular, very lucrative. You are correct. Not just that, but pro football betting. It will be unbelievable the money they'll take in not just the bow revise, but all the sports books in Mississippi and all the other surrounding states would just looking around with our, I can't say on the family show. Well, and the Mississippi can do it now if I'm right because they had pass laws that basically allow them to do it if it ever became legal federally. So there were in a better position. Is that correct? Weller, legislature legislature and their citizens are light years ahead of Alabama, miss of Louisiana, take your pig, Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, your hometown, and they put this in place expecting it to pay us in once it passed. Yes, you're correct. They did the same with casino gambling and Mississippi, which is supported heavily by the patrons in the southeast. Do you expect? I mean, do you expect that over the course of the next year or two that every state will allow this? No, I would say maybe a hand full and then some of them will see the tremendous benefits of sports betting the benefits being the tax benefits. And yeah, there's a follow. Oh, but no there too many people too many states like Alabama. They have the head in the sand. That's a nice way to put it. But no, I don't see Kentucky. Could you know more. Kentucky wheel because the horse racing industry, I think I think they're going to end up sort of making it happen, but that's interesting that they're going to make it happen because the horse racing industry which is probably dying is going to make some type of deal like, hey, can we have a sports bet a sportsbook at our racetrack? Can we have slot machines at our racetrack if they didn't have horse racing, you'd never get it, but you're right. They will get it long before Georgia and other southeastern states, if at all right. Well, we were earlier during our picking are sort of what would our ceremonial. I bet we would make and we were looking at the over unders in the SEC. We had three that stuck out for us. So I wanted to say you're the expert if you agree with our three, the number one one we had, we like Tennessee under five and a half as our best bet deal like that one. Let me look at the schedule real quick. I don't do. Overs and unders. I do points Fred picks during the week. Let's see. You said. So you have to win six games obviously and go to game. Yeah, I just see. I see only four five wins. I don't see unless you want me to go. You could probably. I mean, we, we, we did that earlier, but you're like me. I mean, I see I see four games that they certainly can win, but it's hard for me to find a way they could get to six. So that's kinda why I like them as my as my best pick. Yeah, I could see that. Certainly they should beat Vanderbilt, Charlotte, you tip east Tennessee State. Then after that, I don't think they'll be Florida, Florida. I think Kentucky's going to break what are they lost?.

Well, we're going to talk more about your show and its its role in the science podcast averse in a minute. But I, I just wanna ask you who the hell you think you are. And we get that a lot. As I understand for my extensive research, the two of you met and became friends while east Tennessee State university correct at university that has produced more guests for our podcast than maybe any other. Interestingly enough, a. Who else has been on the podcast of our earliest guests we got on was a fella. You might know by the name of Dr Blaine Schubert, hey, I met him. We have that guy episode eighteen way back in the day. It's a willa believe he was your adviser while you ready TSU. Yes, he was my adviser. I was studying alligators under him, and so we worked on the stealth. So we're going to start with you then, and can you tell us a little bit about, you know, maybe your introduction into wanting to study paleontology, and then what led you to the master's program and ET's you? Absolutely. So my intro to paleontology itself goes way way back. I I said, I wanted to be a paleontologist. My parents will quote when I was five. So I was one of those. I learned the word from one of my books. I said, and then I would continually tell that to people when they would ask me, what do you want to be when you grow up? And I'd say a paleontologist in the sweet lady at the checkout kinda go, oh, and. That is. And so that was that was me all the way up through college. I even when I was dabbling other stuff, I was always heading this direction and I discovered EDS you actually through one of my professors who had volunteered at the museum and at the dig site when she was studying and headed, they are because it was it was the, I did not know there was a as close to me while I was growing up in Georgia headed to gray fossil site on a senior project thought it was awesome in applied for the masters program as soon as I was graduating and it ended up there the at right after graduation. So where were you undergrad somewhere in Georgia sudden it'll tiny, tiny college north Georgia called young Harris college. We had about eight hundred students total and anybody you could walk across campus and ten minutes. So your last name is Harris. So is this like your. Start this college? Yeah, joke that technically would be my brother. Yeah, it was in young hares college in young Harris, Georgia because teeny tiny, tiny. It's just it was thirty minutes from North Carolina and just a little liberal arts college, but it was close to home. It was a small campus which I actually liked more than a big campus and got to meet the right people evidently to get me to EDS. You nice. And I guess we should provide some context for why TSU has this robust and prolific masters program. And I know we've probably talked about this on the show before, but issue has taken charge of the gray fossil site, which is this amazingly productive fossil site in east Tennessee up in the mountains outside Johnson city near the town of gray, Tennessee. If you can believe such a thing and it's it's a site that was found when they were building a highway bypass and the story as I tell it and you guys. Have actually attended there..
