A highlight from THOUGHTCRIME Ep. 13 Willard Romney's Revenge? Dems Legitimizing Prostitution? Oliver The Fake?

"Hey, feeling unsure about your finances these days? You're not alone. That's why Noble Gold Investments is here to help. Just hear it straight from the people who they've helped. The Noble crew walked me through everything with no stress. With their help, I could finally sleep easy at night. And now this month, Noble Gold Investments is handing out a free 5 -ounce silver America the Beautiful coin if you qualify for an IRA. Invest in gold and silver with Noble Gold Investments. Go to noblegoldinvestments .com right now. That is noblegoldinvestments .com right now. Hey, everybody. Happy Saturday. Thought Crimes. I joined late to this because I was at our Pastor Summit. But Andrew, Blake, and Jack carry the water for the first part of the episode. Talk about Mitt Romney. Talk about the Virginia Hooker. And then we also talk about Oliver Anthony, who I call a ginger Bernie Sanders with a banjo. Thought Crimes, where we say things that you're not even allowed to think in Western society. This is your warning. I'm just warning you that, yes, there is things in this episode that are not always appropriate for homeschoolers. Email us as always freedom at charliekirk .com and get involved with Turning Point USA at tpusa .com. That is tpusa .com. Buckle up, everybody. Here we go. Charlie, what you've done is incredible here. Maybe Charlie Kirk is on the college campuses. I want you to know we are lucky to have Charlie Kirk. Charlie Kirk's running the White House, folks. I want to thank Charlie. He's an incredible guy. His spirit, his love of this country. He's done an amazing job building one of the most powerful youth organizations ever created, Turning Point USA. We will not embrace the ideas that have destroyed countries, destroyed lives, and we are going to fight for freedom on campuses across the country. That's why we are here. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to tonight's edition, this week's edition of Thought Crime. Are you ready to commit thought crime? Because we've got a lot. Let's go around the horn. I'm not even sure because we got a lot of craziness going on right now. Our gas prices are up almost a full dollar here since last week, almost. And I was in California about a week ago. And I think are you guys hitting about six, almost $6 a gallon right now? Yeah, we are. Yeah, it's about five. How do you do it? I mean, honestly, Santa Barbara is a small town, so we don't drive a whole bunch. We don't feel it as much as probably like, you know, our Los Angeles friends. But I mean, at the end of the day, I mean, California is and actually this, this includes Arizona, Nevada, I believe, Washington and Oregon are considered the same sort of gas island. So they are as it has to do with where the oil comes from. It has to do with where they're getting refined. California has all these special additives and regulations that the refineries, these these benchmarks that refineries need to hit. So it can only come from certain refineries. So it limits the supply even more. It's a whole problem. So Charlie will be here in a little bit. He's at the Pastor Summit right now. He's dealing with some stuff. He's taking care of business on assignment, of course, for Turning Point USA, the faith coalition. But we're here. We're going to hold down the fort until Charlie returns. So shoot us your emails freedom at Charlie kirk .com. Let's get into the first topic here. This one, I think we've all talked about it, but we haven't all mentioned it together. This one, the the revenge or should we say the elegy for Willard Romney? Willard Mitt Romney has announced he's quitting the Senate total rage quit right before the 2024 election. So he's going to serve out the remainder of his term. And of course, as befits his character, he's riding off into the sunset by having the globalists at the Atlantic publish a completely obnoxious passive aggressive interview, trashing his colleagues, trashing Trump, trashing the GOP base. So what is the final word on the GOP 2012 standard bearer, the man who was the nominee for president in 2012? And, Blake, I think you actually have an excerpt from the from this article that's by McKay Coppins in the Atlantic. Oh, well, yeah, exactly, Jack. It's it's amazing. So, of course, he's everything about Romney is, you know, the supposed like, you know, politeness and decorum and all the damage that Trump does to our democracy by being always the last Boy Scout. Yeah, yeah, the last Boy Scout. So naturally, what he does is he announces he's retiring. And then, you know, in perfect timing with it, McKay Coppins has this biography that he's putting out that's, you know, all about Romney and has all these like data points in it. And he's basically just like Romney doing like a drive by shooting on other members of the Republican Party as he leaves. Let's see, like one of the lines from it. This is a summary as Axios summarizes it helpfully for us. Romney shares a unique disgust for senators Josh Hawley of Missouri and Ted Cruz of Texas, who he thought were too smart to believe Trump won the 2020 election. But, quote, put politics above the interests of liberal democracy and the Constitution. And then the even wilder one is for Senator J .D. Vance of Ohio. He says, quote, I don't know that I can disrespect someone more than J .D. Vance. That is a direct quote from Senator Romney describing Senator Vance, who he still has to, you know, share a Senate chamber with for the next year before he actually quits. But, you know, J .D., I mean, can can someone explain what what what is J .D. Vance done in his time in the Senate that's been so ill reputable? It could. Does anyone have what when he went to East Palestine and it seems it seems his crime is that went on there? I'm trying to figure this out. It seems his crime is that, you know, J .D. Vance came out of Ohio. He went to Yale, I believe it was. And then he was in finance and was, you know, and then wrote his memoir, which was very well received. And he's this up and comer on the coast. And then I guess he moved back to Ohio, started doing too many appearances on Tucker Carlson tonight. And like, according to Romney, it was like the transformation was just was just too jarring, like it was too too much of a transformation for for Mr. Romney, who himself has basically transmuted into this like Democrat, I guess. But that doesn't count. This is an interesting this is an interesting take on on all of it. And Andrew, maybe you can give us a sense of it, because what I think that Romney is really upset about here is that he's considering J .D. Vance a class a class traitor. He's calling him a class traitor and saying, look, you're allowed to make money in finance. You're allowed to make go to Yale. You're allowed to go to the great schools. But the one thing and you're certainly allowed to run for the Senate. But the one thing you're not allowed to do is actually go out to the people of your state, listen to the their interests and listen to their issues and then grow and go and try to actually represent them in the United States Senate. This I is think class traitor. I think that's really smart framing, Jack, because at some level, a lot of this is much more about vibe. It's much more about what Mitt Romney thinks is classy versus gross or respectable versus, you know, essentially untoward and beyond the pale. Right. So it's all based on his own little framework of of class structure, of decorum, those sorts of things. So it says here in this, he says he was also highly critical of Senator J .D. Vance, Republican of Ohio, who reinvented his persona to become a Trump acolyte after publishing a bestselling memoir, Hillbilly Elegy about the working class that Romney loved. So Romney loved the book. So at some level, I think it was just like, so I love this book. And how can this kind of become like a Trump bootlicker? Go ahead. Right. So I can there's there and just real quickly, it's kind of like because in the book, J .D. Vance's conclusions, I would say I don't offer this as criticism. I just say it's sort of it's an evolution on J .D. Vance's part because he sort of just says in the book, well, that that sort of that blase classic Republican line of, you know, and everybody just needs to pull themselves up by their bootstraps. I can do it. So can you. And we should cut taxes for big businesses and the one percent pays most of the income tax and that that's kind of it. And then when he went to actually run for office and started really engaging with people politically, that's when he shifted, not socially. Right. But he shifted economically to become more of a populist. Blake, what you're saying? Well, what's so telling in this article is like some of the just a little specific anecdotes that it does pick. And I almost wonder if Coppins is like subtly trolling Romney. Apparently Romney lives by himself and his family in D .C. It mentions let me get let me get the line here. It talks about his his his pad that he lives in. And it says the place had not been Romney's first choice for Washington residents when he was elected in twenty eighteen. He'd had his eye on a newly remodeled condo at the Watergate with glittering views of the Potomac. His wife, Ann, fell in love with the place, but his soon to be staffers and colleagues warned him about the commute, which, by the way, it's like a mile and a half to the Capitol. So he grudgingly chose practicality over luxury and settled for the two point four million dollar townhouse instead. And then, of course, this is not good enough for for Ann. So she never visits him when he's in D .C. So it turns into a gross bachelor pad that has it mentions there's crumbs everywhere.

Sen. JD Vance Proposes Safety Standards for Railroads and Firefighters

"Let's bring in senator JD Vance from Ohio senator. Thanks for making time for us today. Good to be with you, Alex. So let's first talk about your real Bill. I think this is a big deal and I love that you're showing leadership here. Is this your first big Bill? I guess that's my first half question. And the other thing is noteworthy that you're actually not doing this to campaign for some higher office, you're actually trying to benefit the people of Ohio with it, which is nice. Explain what's going on and you're building a huge coalition. Give me the details. Yeah, so the basic idea is what happened in east palestin, Ohio, where you had a train crash, terrible chemical fire afterwards, and basically a chemical bomb that went off in northeastern Ohio. I don't think that was going to happen again, or at least we should do some common sense things to make it less likely. What I've tried to do here is basically create a couple of additional safety standards that railroads have to comport with. And then simultaneously make it so that the firefighters who are dealing with these chemical fires when you have the train crashes to begin with, they actually know what they're dealing with because that's something I heard from the folks of east Palestine and 99% volunteer firefighting force is they were going to this chemical fire. They didn't know what they were actually dealing with and how could they properly protect themselves or deal with the fire given that given that reality. So the bill addresses both of those things. And the thing that I try to remind people because I know a number of conservatives don't like the idea of doing anything that makes it harder for corporate America to live their life. The basic problem here is that the railroads socialize the risk of their business model. When they have a massive train crash, that costs a lot of money for Ohio taxpayers, it costs a lot of money for federal taxpayers. Think about the welfare benefits they're going to flow out through the door to the people of east Palestinian to healthcare benefits because of the health and economic consequences of what Norfolk Southern did. And if we're going to do that, and I think of course we should, we have to take care of the people of east Palestinian. We should expect Norfolk Southern and other real companies to hold themselves to a higher standard. And that's exactly what we're doing with this bill. It's pretty simple and straightforward. I know, you know, rightfully so people are focused on the border. People are focused on the debt ceiling negotiation. Those are all very important issues. But I think this is a small win that I can get for the people of Ohio that matters a lot to folks back

Washington's Disconnect From Middle America

"Last question on this Dave McCormick, one of my comments yesterday flying cross country was billions for the blue bubble boys in Silicon Valley and you don't get the time of day if you're an eastern Ohio or western Pennsylvania on the derailment. Some people thought that wasn't fair, but I believe it's all of a sudden these connected VCs are on the phones of their buddies in D.C.. They get action in 48 hours. We still haven't got the president in east Palestine, and you know that area very well. I mean, you grew up there. You probably are closer to each Palestine than I am. It was 40 miles down the road from Warren, but it's probably less from where you grew up. Yeah. Well, you know, from where I was born, certainly. Yeah, I grew up in a different part of the state, but I grew up around Scranton, but I was born right near there and I've been talking to my Friends at beaver county. Who are most affected by it. And I agree with you a 100% in the following sense. The thing that I discovered on the campaign trail, the thing that I felt more visceral I should say on the campaign, the thing that I think president Trump tapped into in 2016 is that there's this disconnect where the people that are making policy in Washington and the excel a bubble between Washington, New York are completely disconnected and really not particularly focused on or care about the people that are living in mainstream America. And that certainly the case with and these Palestine thing is essentially a good example, not because the president is showing up would have changed the outcome necessarily or even change the policy. It would have been reflective of actually caring and being connected to the people that are most affected by it. And it's the same with fentanyl, it's the same with fracking. It's the same with inflation. It's the same with the open border. These are issues which are being felt by a huge part of America, and that was really the inspiration for the book.

Norfolk Southern to pay millions for derailment: governor

"Norfolk Southern will pay Pennsylvania several $1 million to cover the cost of a toxic train derailment last month just across the border in Ohio. Pennsylvania governor Josh Shapiro says the railroad company will pay $5 million to reimburse fire departments for equipment contaminated or damaged and $1 million to beaver and Lawrence counties to help businesses and residents whose livelihoods were damaged. Meanwhile, the cleanup from the February 3rd train derailment continues in east Palestine, Ohio, and the EPA has ordered Norfolk Southern to cover those costs, concern over an explosion led state and local officials to approve releasing and burning toxic vinyl chloride from 5 tanker cars. That can provide the potential to track where sensitive materials are headed or perhaps disrupt the flow of goods entirely. Senator J.D. Vance Gives Us the Latest Out of Ohio

"Vance senator Vance, welcome back to Merck first. Thank you, Seth, how are you? Good, good, good, good. I wanted to play the clip we've been playing a view drawing that little stick through the crick and then seeing all those pollutants well up. Can you tell us what the latest is from east Palestine and how our Ohio, ohioans doing without the meaningful assistance from this administration. Yeah, well, a couple of big updates. So first of all, they still have not fully cleaned up the contaminated site. So you think about what's causing those chemicals in the water. It's the leaching from the soil, the soil is still contaminated, and they haven't cleaned it up. This is the second thing, of course, the Biden administration continues to largely be MIA, especially the Department of Transportation. The EPA has spent a little bit more time in east palestin. I've actually been happy about that, but everybody else seems to be ignoring these guys. Why is the president not going? If president Trump can take the time, why does Biden not go? Well, by the way, president Trump coming, I think, actually really forced the Biden administration to do more than they were doing at the time. So any action we've seen from them, we've seen in the last week since that visit from president Trump. Look, I think Biden thinks these people aren't his voters. He doesn't care about them. It's really that simple. I think the Democrats see American politics in a friend versus enemy kind of way. They didn't vote for him, so he's not going to pay him any attention. It's disgusting, but that's the way that he sees it.

Why Is Biden Afraid of East Palestine? Lord Conrad Black Explains

"I'd like to talk about your piece on Ukraine and The Epoch Times. But as I look at the coverage on television right now, there are interviewing a resident of east Palestine on why Biden hasn't visited yet. And president Trump has visited, even before the transportation secretary, you've written books on president Trump and prior presidents, such as Roosevelt and Nixon, I'm sure they probably would have visited by now. What does it say? Is it an out of touch Ness? What is your analysis that more than three weeks in? The current chief executive hasn't gone to the side of this awful calamity. It's terribly hard to explain Sebastian. And he appears to be averse to going to any domestic setting that is unsatisfactory from his political standpoint. I mean, it has become, I think, a virtual national outrage that he has only made one visit anywhere near the southern border. Which he has turned into a sieve through which millions of past without documentation. And including a carrying amongst them, not every one of them, obviously, but amongst them, literally tons, tons of fentanyl. And he made one peremptory visit to an area that wasn't heavily traveled by illegal migrants and stayed for a few hours, and that was it. And he seems to have an aversion to visiting a scene that is unfortunate in itself. And potentially are actually politically problematical for him.

Lord Conrad Black on Jeb Bush's Endorsement(?) of Ron DeSantis

"Perhaps we can start with this. A scion of one of the two political one of the two most powerful political dynasties in America, the Bush family. Jeb Bush made this endorsement at the weekend of president Trump's challenge at cut ten. Is this Ron DeSantis opportunity to run for higher office? I think it is. He's been a really effective governor. He's young. I think we're on the verge of a generational change in our politics. What kind of hope so I think it's time for a more forward leaning future oriented conversation in our politics as well. That was quite a hagiographic little interview with Jeb Bush, where he said, yes, yes, we need a new generation. Fascinatingly, lord black, early this morning, political, which is slightly beneath the gutter. Politico published the story that they had been emailed by the former governor Jeb Bush, who not quite a full retraction but stated, I did not endorse Ron DeSantis. I merely praised him. That reminds me of Mark Antony's speech at Caesar's burial. Isn't this peculiar presidential politics? I wouldn't want to mind read chip bush, but in fairness to him, I'd say two things. And look, he had a bruising battle and a completely unsuccessful battle with Donald Trump in 2016 for the Republican nomination. Anyone who followed it remembers what a shambles and a wreckage Trump made of the previously favored Jeb Bush campaign. He was thought by many to be the FrontRunner. And he was demolished. And he certainly vividly remembers the extreme antagonism of candidate Trump to the George W. Bush presidency, especially the Iraq War. I think it's fair to say president Trump's been generally much more respectful of the former prison bush, Jeb bush father. So he has that and I mean, whether one agrees with the Trump view or the bush view, I think we can all understand why Jeb Bush has his reservations about Trump

Scott the theme from officials including the EPA to the people of east palestin, Ohio has been everything is safe, so why this order now? Well, it seems like they are operating with sort of an abundance of caution and in response to a lot of the criticism that they've been getting from the community and around the country. There has been a chorus of academics, environmental groups and even some residents who are after hearing about the details of what was in these train cars and what was intentionally released to avoid an explosion could have produced these pollutants known as dioxins, which are very concerning, very persistent in the environment. And so EPA is saying that there's no sign from other different types of chemicals that they are monitoring for in the environment that there would be any dacs, but they have directed the Norfolk Southern railroad company to test for them anyway. I think just to give residents peace of mind and just be extra careful. Now let's talk about dioxins for a minute. I mean, they can be quite complex. They can be very dangerous and they can last in the environment for a very long time, can't they? Yes. So it's a class of compounds that is not that uncommon. They're produced in any kind of combustion and they come from the chlorine content and whatever is being combusted. When you're talking about these chemicals including vinyl chloride, which is a component in PVC plastic, there's just such a high level of chlorine and potential for production of the actin that it's particularly a large source of this pollution, the authorities are saying that as a gas it would have dissipated and that there wouldn't be any reason for high concentration in these Palestinian, but experts have been saying that it would have attached itself to dust particles in that huge cloud of smoke that everyone saw and settled to the ground. So yeah, it just kind of remains to be seen whether there is contamination of Dax and they're not. And of course, dust particles, well, they can disperse with the wind. They can be picked up by weather systems, is this more of a concern than just for east palestin, Ohio and the surrounding area. I mean, we don't have any reason to assume that, but it's possible. Right, like if it was in this cloud of dust and chemicals and smoke that was blowing for miles into Pennsylvania, then yes, it's possible that it could have spread beyond east Palestinian, but again, not any reason for alarm about that just yet, but still an open question. And we'll continue to watch it that Scott dance and you can read much more on this online. Just go to Washington Post dot com. And that's our Bill O'Neill. Northwest news time for 39. "Joins us. We've done some fun things together. Penny has really been a critical ingredient to turning point USA's explosive trajectory over the last couple of years and he's the host of the beni show and Benny gets very fired up and is incredibly effective. And generous, by the way, giving a lot of money to the residents, east Palestinian. Benny, why don't you tell our audience about that as we get started? You went to east Palestinian and actually gave money to the residents there. Tell us about it. So I gave nothing. I gave merely the social media monetization that came from all of you watching our program. Subscribing to our show every single morning. And so we thank you. We simply gave away our revenue for that month to the people of east palestin because, well, it's really evil to monopolize and monetize someone's pain and then do nothing for them, I think. And so based on the teachings of Jesus Christ and based on being just a simple Christian, not trying to start a movement or a church here or anything, just trying to do what God asks us to do, which is to be light onto the world, to be salt and light. And those people, they've gotten plenty of salt, they need some light. And so we went there to help out the 20 people closest to the Bern, the toxic burn. One of the men who I walked up to his doorstep, knocked on his door, handed him the envelope. He said, come around back. I want to show you something. And behind his house, Charlie was the wreckage of the train. Smoldering. Wow. Noxious, at burning to the eyes, and it was the entire thing was bent open like it was an Avengers movie. Like it was a marvel movie, right? It was like the train had melted in his backyard. And he has to live with that. He's a poor working class American. He doesn't have anywhere to go. And no

"President Trump welcome back to the Salem news channel. Well, thank you very much, Sebastian. And your show is doing great. And it's an honor to do it with you. Really great honor. Thank you, condi sir. I couldn't believe it that our team said it's now the 5th time you've been on the show. We have the full previous ones that made the news one in which you called a merely a woke traitor. You talked about the stealing of the election. Let's see if we can make some news today. First things first, mister president, could you comment on why it took a former president to go to Ohio. We have the amazing footage from you in that McDonald's. Why did you get there to help the suffering suffering people of east Palestine before forget Pete boot edge edge before even President Biden went, mister president? Well, it seemed a very natural thing to do. I was watching the news and I saw this incredible explosion and it really is having very devastating effect on water and air and everything else as you know as you've been covering it very nicely. But I saw it happening. And I was told that the fema and that the Biden administration will have nothing to do with it. They actually said, we'll have nothing to do with it. It doesn't come within the parameters of fema. And I will tell you, Phoebe is great. You know, we had a fantastic relationship for tornadoes and hurricanes and everything else he worked on. And they were told not to do it. And as soon as I announced, I didn't do it for this reason, but it worked out to be pretty good because as soon as I announced that I was going, then the Biden people announced that they were going to go and that fema was going to be there and fever was going to help them out, et cetera, et cetera. That happened. But I went there and they're incredible people. The mayor was great. The whole place was really great. And they're working very hard to get rid of that problem. It's a big problem.

Norfolk Southern officials are expected to attend a public meeting in east palestin, Ohio, to allow residents to ask questions of the rail operator after one of its trains derailed while carrying toxic chemicals through their community nearly a month ago. Locals remain frustrated about potential long-term health effects from that derailment and subsequent fire. The EPA ordered train operator Norfolk Southern to meet with residents tonight last month, railroad officials backed out of a town hall citing threats against their employees. In addition to locals who have reported health issues since the derailment, crews involved in the cleanup have also reported symptoms to government officials. Plenty of us are anxious about our tax refunds this year. A new report from bank rate dot com says 69% of Americans who are expecting a federal tax refund this year have at least one worry about it among those expecting a refund 34% fear the refund won't make as big of an impact because of inflation and rising costs, 33% worry the refund will be smaller than usual. Also, 75% of people who expect to get that federal tax refund this year say, the money is important to their overall financial situation. That is up from 67% last year. Dealing with a mental health problem can sometimes lead to an emergency room visit. And a new study finds that happens more frequently among black Americans. It's a study from the CDC looking at hospital data from 2018 through 2020. It found that black adults went to an emergency department for a mental health issue at a rate of 97 visits per 1000 adults each year. That is nearly double the national average, and it's above the numbers for white adults who had 53 mental health related emergency department visits per 1000 adults. Researchers didn't get into the exact reasons behind that, but they did point out that black adults are generally less likely than other groups to receive routine treatment for mental health disorders. "Yellen made a surprise visit to Ukraine, not east Palestine. Not actually our own country. Ukraine might as well be part of America now. We're spending more money on Ukraine and it sure seems we're spending on our own citizens, play cut three, please. Let me make clear the United States and the allies are support for Ukraine will be lasting and is unconditional. We stand with Ukraine and want to support Ukraine. Of course, is the immediate need for military equipment. In addition to that, they need ongoing economic support. We've already provided $13 billion in support and there's an additional 10 billion that we expect to provide over the next 9 months. Unbelievable. Matt Gaetz unconditional Matt, no matter what they do, unconditional your thoughts. The only love that is truly unconditional. Seriously. Love between the Biden administration and Ukraine where we are currently now funding the pension liabilities within the Ukrainian government. We have firefighters and police in this country in dilapidated areas where they wonder whether or not their pensions will be fully funded. But we can do that in Ukraine. Tomorrow, we will have leading officials at the Department of Defense before the House armed services committee, and they will lay out their vision on Ukraine. And we will hear a lot of that information. One of the witnesses will be the DoD inspector general. And this is the question I will ask. Have we followed U.S. law with the monitoring end to end of U.S. material and munitions? And military equipment. And to Ukraine. And if they are honest, the answer will be no.

Rep. David Kustoff: Committee Members Should Visit the Border

"So that's another thing that I plot our Republican leadership doing what you just talked about is taking the committee out of Washington D.C. Todd and taking him to really to real America to the border. My committee, the ways and means committee had a hearing a few weeks ago when Petersburg West Virginia and we've got another one coming up next week and in Oklahoma. But taking the hearings, Jim Jordan taking the judiciary committee to the border. I know Mark green's going to be taking his Homeland Security committee to the border. So that the members of Congress could hear directly from border control agents, local law enforcement, everybody. So that when we're looking at legislation and things that we can craft, try to address these problems that we're not operating in a vacuum, we're hearing from again from people with experience. And I'm glad that Biden went to what do you create? But you ought to go to the border. The ought to go to he ought to go to Ohio to east Palestine and talk to real people who have been afflicted by all these issues, including the border, which when I talked to local law enforcement, not only do they know about migrants, but the drugs and the fentanyl that are in our communities, whether it's my district or anybody else's, they're coming Todd directly through the southern border. They're being transported by a number of these people and the cartel. So bottom line is we've got a seal off that border.

But I think I would defend him on the charge of going there when there are bad things in the United States and I think it's a scandal that he has not gone to east Palestine, Ohio. But you can do both, you know. But on president's day on premises, is there something a little bit piquant about him going on president's day? The fact that he went on president's day, I wouldn't read a great deal into that. I mean, it's as good a day as any other to go. And for some reason he also demanded to go to Ukraine, rather than bother with the environmental disaster going on, right here at home. I mean, he wouldn't even send Pete, right? He wouldn't even send his secretary of transportation, not until now. Not until now, and oh, everyone's got an excuse for that, right? Here's Pete's. A train derailment in Ohio continues to capture national attention. Correspondent Linda kenyon reports that the federal government is now demanding that the rail company gets more financially involved with helping residents there. This says Ohio governor Mike dewine and the Environmental Protection Agency administrator both volunteered to drink tap water on a visit to a woman's home in east palestin, Ohio. It was an orphic southern train carrying hazardous materials that derailed in the town of east palestin, Ohio, February 3rd, residents were forced to evacuate. But now that they're back, the damage remains. Norfolk will pay for cleaning up the mess that they created and the trauma that they inflicted on this community. At a news conference in east Palestinian EPA administrator Michael Regan said if it doesn't, there will be consequences. If the company fails to complete any action ordered by EPA, the agency will immediately step in, conduct the work ourselves and then force Norfolk Southern to pay triple in cost accordance to the powers granted by my agency. A statement from the railroad says the company has been paying for the cleanup activities to date and will continue to do so. Ohio senator JD Vance is not impressed. This is disgusting. On Twitter, Vance described a creek in east Palestinian. And the fact that we have not cleaned up the train crash, the fact that these chemicals are still seeping in the ground is an insult to the people who live in east palestin.

"Wall Street. I'm Karen Moscow, and the renewed surge in treasury yields is keeping stocks under pressure with geopolitical tensions and dire forecasts from bellwethers Walmart and Home Depot also weighing on the moods of investors. We check the markets all day long here at Bloomberg. S&P 500 down 9 tenths of a percent are about 35 points. It's at 40 44. The Dow Jones Industrial Average down 9 tenths of a percent or 314 points at 33,503, and the NASDAQ is down 1% or a 116 points at 11,669. Ten year treasury down 27 30 seconds 3.92%, they yield on the two year 4.70%. Nymex crude oil is up 9 tenths of a percent or 71 cents at $77 5 cents a barrel. Comic school down to tenths of a percent or $3 ten cents at 1846 90 announced, the Euro one O 6 5 three against the dollar the N one 35 O 9, looking at Walmart this morning, it's down about 1.3% after its profit forecast for this year fell short of analysts estimates and Home Depot is down almost 5% after the home improvement retailer forecast a fiscal year profit decline alongside plans for a $1 billion wage investment for hourly workers. That's a Bloomberg business flash Tom and Paul. You Karen thanks so much. Shout out to our producers for doing this because I've had a lot of mail Paul saying, why aren't you covering this train wreck in the eastern Ohio? Eastern Ohio, south of Youngstown, it is a place that is economically struggled for years. And it's where trains with chemicals go through. And there has been an uproar about the coverage of it. Liliana byington has been on this for Bloomberg government and transportation and all she joins us now with an update. Liliana, let's start with a why. Why was this undercovered early on? Was it because no one died? I think in part parts partially because of that, there are also a lot of trained derailments every year. So that kind of also played a role into whether or not this got a ton of coverage at the beginning. But it's also a smaller town east Palestinian Ohio. So I think that that also played a role, but there has been coverage from the beginning about the accident. I think it just got a lot more national coverage as of recently. I mean, what's important to me, liliana is this is airplanes, and heaven forbid. But the companies out visible, the executives are out visible, have we seen the railroad companies and I believe it's Norfolk Southern here. Have they been visible in this? Or is this just another day at the races? Yeah, I think because it's gotten so much attention. We have seen a lot more visibility, more folks southern CEO was in east Palestinian this past weekend. And we're starting to see more Biden officials also going to east Palestinian to kind of show face after we've seen a lot more residents raising major concerns about the uncertainty they've seen about their own health and the safety of the water and the air after these chemicals were released into the air. So liliane, I'm just reading an article on the Bloomberg terminals by Dow Jones Marco watch. And here's a headline that Norfolk Southern can't enjoy. Norfolk Southern, which spent $4 billion on stock buybacks last year, creates $1 million fund for Ohio train derailment victims here. What's the feeling in east palestin about what Norfolk Southern is doing to help the situation? Because boy, that doesn't sound good. Yeah, I think there's a lot of animosity right now. They want to see more effort from both the federal government and the state government as well as the company. They created that fund and they EPA and the state are testing air and water. But I think you're going to see a lot more kind of rage over this because people want to feel like their community is safe and there's still a lot of uncertainty about that right now. Let's go to square one. Is it safe? I mean, I get, you know, I woke up with a rash this morning and decided it was because, you know, vet Bill kissed me, but you know, to be done, there's no jokes about it, but we all agree these are horrific chemicals. We all agree it was in the middle of nowhere, but is there toxicity issues here? Date and federal officials have repeatedly said that they have yet to detect dangerous levels of chemicals in the air or in the water, but a lot of residents aren't really trusting that right now. They feel that they are experiencing things like headaches and rashes and they've reported that there is still smells of chemicals. And so there's some residents that are turning to private testing if they can afford it and things like that because they want to be sure before they bring their family back into communities, some of the people evacuated, that it is a 100% safe and not just that there isn't dangerous levels of chemicals in their direct water. So liliana, you're the transportation reporter for Bloomberg government. You have a lot of experience in this area. I guess one of the questions is, is there a feeling within government within the regulatory environment? Maybe within the rare industry in general, that the railroad industry does enough to ensure safety. I mean, you mentioned there's a lot of derailments, I guess that's just part of the business. But is there a sense that amidst all the stock buybacks and then other places they spend their money that they're spending enough on safety? I think that going forward, what we're going to see is in the past where the railroad industry like many other industries lobbied for deregulation and has had some success in that. And so I think going forward, we're going to see a big push for more regulation on freight railroad industry when it comes to derailments and other safety precautions. Secretary Buttigieg this weekend sent a letter to Norfolk Southern kind of hitting on hit them for lobbying against certain regulations that they believe would be safer at a time when they are making a good amount of operating income. So I think that going forward we're going to see a push from lawmakers and the federal government to crack down more so on regulations, which can affect companies bottom line going forward since a lot of the railroad industry has lobbied the kind of have more of the efficiency and flexibility when it comes to regulation. Liliana, thank you so much. Slowly on a byington with this Bloomberg government transportation on east palestin, Ohio. Paul, I want to talk about the equity markets and the redo here. There's a lot of caution out there making a splash this weekend. We have Edward Hyman with his tomorrow, which will be exciting as well. I assume were the more optimistic construct, but you've been through this a million times, Paul. Sure. Where people show pretty good earnings or even organic revenue growth. It's better than good. And yet they go, you know, we're really not sure of

"Harris is at the editor's desk here's what we're following the air and water in east palestin, Ohio is called safe, according to governor Mike dewine after EPA testing people in the village have been complaining of illnesses and animals dying after a train de Roman on February 3rd resulted in the release of hazardous chemicals. Meanwhile, 6 people are dead and the suspect in custody after a series of shootings in northwest Mississippi, they happen in the town of Archibald and take county just south of Memphis. One of the shootings happened at a local store. Now to continued concerns about toxic trained URL in Ohio earlier this year and we'll get you the details on that in just a moment, but U.S. attorney general Merrick Garland and his Justice Department are poised to help communities like Seattle plagued by gun and other violence. Barry Stein is covering for this with The Washington Post and we'll get more on that a little bit later on. We now have official explanation of those mysterious objects shot down over North America in the aftermath of that Chinese balloon crossing over the United States. President Biden acknowledging the three flying objects were not a national security threat. The intelligence community's current assessment is that these three objects were most likely balloons tied to private companies, recreation or research institutions studied weather or conducting other scientific research. The administration had deemed the objects a threat to civil aviation. So sent fighter jets to shoot them down. One after another, over Alaska, Canada, and Lake Huron. The balloons were detected after norad and adjusted radars to track smaller slower aircraft at high altitudes in light of that Chinese and Persian. But there are hundreds of balloons over the U.S. every day. Thousands and thousands globally with few regulations in place. The president is saying that will now change, calling for a better and accessible inventory of unmanned airborne objects, better measures to detect objects in U.S. airspace and updated rules for launching those unmanned craft. A daunting set of goals that will not be done quickly. In the meantime, the U.S. is trying to recalibrate the radars so they pick up legitimate spy craft while weeding out benign balloons. And meantime, the administration is finding valuable information from the recovery of the payload from the Chinese spy balloon as for the other three small balloons, the search at Lake Huron has now been suspended because of what they say is the low probability of recovery. In fact, a U.S. official tells ABC News that given the remote areas where the balloons were shot down, they may never find any of them. That's ABC's Martha radzi as we said concerned, continued concerns about the toxic train derailment in Ohio. People in east palestin, Ohio, bracing for a new threat stemming from the toxic crash site or a Norfolk Southern train carrying vinyl chloride derailed two weeks ago, fearing heavy rain could spread contamination, officials built up dams along the crash site. All families need to know that they are safe. All families deserve access to clean air and safe drinking water. The slow moving chemical plume from a controlled burn at the site is expected to drift into West Virginia today, but the EPA says the contaminants are well below the 5 60 parts per billion that the CDC considers hazardous. The state of Ohio and EPA are working hand in hand. And if we say that the water is safe and the air is safe, we believe it because we tested it in the data shows it. But residents say they're skeptical and scared by mixed messages on water and air safety in the last two weeks. Some reporting sore throats, vomiting, and other symptoms. We should not have been let back into town until all of this was done. You don't bring families that with their kids in their loved ones, and then tell them to scrub

"Four obtained a report prepared by prince George's county police. It shows that between April and October of last year, no drivers photographed traveling 90 mph or more were issued a speeding citation. Former triple-A spokesman John Townsend says a technical problem could be preventing police from being able to definitively identify which car in a photograph is speeding. The most important thing is to have the camera. But when you have anomalies in the system where drivers are going a 140 mph and they're not ticketed, that shows a lack of confidence in the data. The vendor of the cameras, conduit, declined comment, county police say the ultimate goal is to reduce speed on that road and they say that's happening. Some Montgomery county residents are fired up about a proposed plan to take lanes away from another busy area road. It's part of an effort to make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists. The so called road diet pilot program would reduce tuckerman lane in North Bethesda from four lanes down to two, with a single lane in each direction between old Georgetown road and Rockville pike. The pilot program would last a year after which a decision would be made on whether to make the lane changes permanent at a virtual meeting yesterday, several residents spoke out against the idea. Seems to me that what's going to occur here is only going to cause traffic jams. It is dangerous. I agree. But this is not the solution by any means. The debts, the injuries, no one wants that. And so I understand and appreciate that you're trying to do something about that. However, and I hope that you're listening, I don't think this is the way to go. Now lanes were recently taken away from nearby old Georgetown road to create bike lanes. It won praise from bike riders, but it raised anger and frustration for many residents and drivers. The head of the EPA will be visiting an Ohio village today where toxic chemicals spilled in a train derailment nearly two weeks ago. Last night residents of east palestin, Ohio, and nearby communities pat to school gym, hoping to get answers about whether they're safe from toxic chemicals that spilled or were burned off. Kathy Dyck lives in nearby negli. This is so much bigger than just in the water. Our environment are wildlife animals. New waterford resident Danielle deal says so far, she has not been happy with the answers she's getting. It was just a big run around.
