attach it to a must pass military authorization bill this is the NDAA they do it in charge of the parliamentarian It's partly the parliamentarian but I mean the NDA that's actually going to be passing normally through regular process It's long been a bipartisan bill Everyone wants to support the troops in the military And so that's a potential that's being floated out there but we've already heard from Republican leader Kevin McCarthy That's just not his preferred way of doing things And so it's a big question mark If that's not the way they do it then yes Tom I think you're absolutely right Democrats really don't have a lot of options at this point except doing it via reconciliation We mourned the senator from Kansas one of our great heroes Are there any bob doles in the Senate right now I think in part that remains to be to be seen right You know you never quite know the legacy while people are there certainly Republican senator Mitch McConnell the majority leader I mean he's someone who is very much respected for his ability to keep his Republicans together He absolutely has power now I mean there have been some people who have joked that he's really the one who's still seen as the majority leader in the Senate which is of course a little easier to do when you have that 50 50 break there But that's someone in particular who could be seen but Bob Dole he was really respected on both sides of the aisle House speaker Nancy Pelosi has asked that flags be flown at half mast for former senator Noel And I think to a certain extent he shows a section of a bipartisan Washington that we're just not seen with the partisanship today It's a different breed of conservative and conservatives than we are seeing now Emily I think that's kind of the point there that this is a different breed of Republican Party now than it was when he was in the Senate And I'm sure you hear the same thing for Democrats saying that their party has changed I mean both sides in Washington we have seen this increase in partisanship And that's really come about through a number of things both structural and relating to the country as a whole And finally we of course are focused very much on the Federal Reserve here Emily do we have any indication that you'll get the confirmations for the second term for Jerome Powell and Leo brainard as vice chair by your end Well at this point we do know that the Senate is hoping to move quickly chairman for the Senate budget committee sherrod Brown really does want to get these hearings underway And we've already heard from both Democrats and Republicans that there is plenty of support for Powell even though he might not have support from some progressive senators including Elizabeth Warren Emily in town in New York City All week Emily And so one of the things I tell people is take a assessment of your entire life. And find the places in your life where you are unhappy. Find out what make bringing unhappiness to you because what's bringing unhappiness to you is stealing the purpose from you. See, purpose is the scene of fulfillment. When I'm walking in my purpose, my purpose is the ultimate place of fulfillment. When something is no longer my purpose, I no longer get the joy are the peace that comes from doing it. I'll give you something that I used to be a pastor. I passed it for like 5 days. We shut it down. It wouldn't grow it, okay? It was not growing. It was like anybody and Greenville North Carolina. I'm so sorry. It was not growing. The power signature, right there on the campus of east Carolina university. And we, you know, it was really good. I noticed that people were coming and I know the people were coming to one day I looked at the membership in our little membership program that we were paying $600 a year for. And we had more visitors who were just coming to see me, then we had people joining to be a part of the ministry. And I learned, I don't have to do this. This two hour drive every time we have a service and staying in a hotel and spending money to make this happen, this was not going to fulfill me ten years down the road. Thank you now a little bit about you before we get started here with the book You grew up in a small coastal town thing. It's cure north carolina and jerry. All the that always things with the that you say security hurly-burly you started writing it East carolina university and you now writer and teacher living in asheville With your husband for children. And so how does how does Being raised in a small town And the life that you're leading inform your writing and and particularly the book book of thorns. Yeah i loved growing up in in kerry beach. It was ideally in. Every way. And i think i do still have that small town Sensibility of family and neighborhood and community and that definitely informs my writing the year thornton. Honey is sort of unofficially set in asheville. I i don't name it as as asheville but Locals and folks who've been would certainly recognize some of the places and i think that just the sense of of community and family It really informs how i ride as as opposed to you know. I don't tend to set things in in big cities. Ashville is actually a pretty small town A really cool town but a pretty small one and so i. Yeah i definitely think that you know when. I'm when i'm crafting a story. I'm really thinking about the the characters and And how they how they function within their whole community are saw Emmy right Sort of about the mystery and wonder of life as you say and it's Contemporary fiction that focuses on these themes of second chances redemption and finding the beauty and the world around us. And i'm curious to what draws you to these things i think that on drawn to those particular themes of of second chances and redemption and learning how to see the the beauty in the around us because it's such a universal set of of themes. I think everyone is going through. You know that kind of thing. We're all making mistakes and hoping that we're given second chances. We're looking for forgiveness and very often in situations where we're called to forgive others And the the beauty in the world around us. I think sometimes we get so wrapped up in things that aren't going well or especially two thousand twenty the way we wish things were that we very often don't stop to take stock of of the things that that are wonderful and the the small beauties especially i think is is really what draws me is is the the small things that that make our live special. So what kind of teaching a year engaged in. Oh gosh i have. I think i have the best teaching job ever. I teach mostly creative writing and some literature to middle school and high school. Kids through a program called elevate life and art which is a home school enrichment program. So i have very small classes but I'm lucky enough to have classes filled with students who really want to learn to write and students really love to read. So it's the it's the best of all worlds. As far as a teacher is concerned really engage students. And who really love the subject. And and i feel really lucky. I've got some kids in my writing classes. That are just amazing. I feel like i'm i'm seeing. The you know the the the little middle school faces of people that will be on the shelves and in the future. Some some really wonderful talent and and i'm i'm happy to be part of their journey when when i started writing i was in that same age but You know typically in school. You don't really get that opportunity to to to write creatively in your classroom. So i'm i'm happy that they have that in and hoping that that it will keep those fires lit for them
