"Says from the years I live in San Diego. I learned that no matter how high the fence around your garbage cans, possums can climb it. Yes, I have very high walls and fences, but yes. It's a marsupial, like a kangaroo. I think I did know that. Okay. Wow. It's the only North American marsupial. How did he get here? Okay. By the way, can I just say this proves how non high strong and yappy? Adorable new dogs are Bonnie was sitting on my lap, and she was suddenly her ears went up, and I was like, what's going on? And I suddenly saw the possum, and she put you in the yap at all. She's just like, well, that is interesting. Look at that in the backyard. For small rats. Hi. Hi. The last time I called you gave me the RBO. About, okay. What's the RBF? Oh, resting bitch face? Okay. Yeah. Well, but it was more active. Oh, all right. And I love you guys. And I got the clip because I told the screener. It's like, well, do we gain shame? Elon Musk and I have no idea. Well, nor do I care. But it was just like a question, right? And then, let me start off the show today with George Soros Santos. Do we get him out of Congress by, you know, with this oh, I was just saying, if they want to ban drag performers, then that's how they would get Jordan Santos on top. And I'm like, I don't want to ban drag performers. I want more of them. No, I know you don't. And I didn't mean that with Elon Musk either. But I got the Chris is giving you resting bitch face right now, and I don't know. He's expressed in confused face. Well, the only thing is that that's all I wanted to say, and I got slam to like, I couldn't even say anything. Oh, you hung up on me. We're so sorry. I apologize. I hang up on a lot of people, but just only because of heartbreak songs. And two Stephanie's credits. It's usually me. Time consideration. Okay. All right. Well, we love you and we appreciate your contribution. Thank you so much. All right, thank you. All right. Way to go, Steph. What did I do? It's something I did previously. Oh, okay. Well, I always have resting bitch face. I'm having a bad life? Yes. Tracy in mesa, Arizona. Hello. Good morning. Good morning. So in March of 1982, I became a student at musicians institute in Hollywood there. And for the first month or so, I was waiting for an apartment to open up. So I lived with Friends of our family in eagle rock. And they had a pool in the backyard. And every morning I would get up and go jump and pull and swim a few laps and then take a shower and go to school. And then one morning I went out and I got up on the diving board and I looked in and there was a dead opossum at the bottom of the pool. Okay. And I never got in that pool again. And I don't think I got in a pool again for about another year. Well, we know they don't have to be out a little bit. Yeah, I know. Hey, I called every day this week. If I call again, my do I have to change my name to Kevin? Yes. Yes. Or if you could change your name to satoru. It's horror. Kitchen. Yes. Qatar rubbish. Just say it's guitar or Colin. Wow. Wow. Wow, that was a shot at the Kevin. Wow. Yeah. That was a caddy Kevin shot there. Wow. It was a good one. Okay. Oh, and now Kevin in Chicago is here. He's got words. Three, two, one. Oh, that was Butch. So no, I'm still trying to recover from my Vegas trip. But mama, you can confirm that going there when you're 41 is not the same as when you were 21. To Vegas? Yes. Yes. Right, yes. I was just there. Now that I am 41, correct. That's what I'm saying. Rudy Giuliani here. Mama, I finally caught up on the two of your shows that I missed while I was away. And I have a few notes. Oh good. She takes these really, really well. Oh my gosh, we love them. Go ahead. No, no. Not notes. Comments. First, your Biden's 5 or 6 veto pens joke from Friday was absolute fire and you get no respect. What was that joke? I don't remember that joke. You know what, what we say is so disposable that we have no idea what we said last week. It was the dirty Harry reference to 6 veto pens. Oh, do I have 5 or 6 vetoes? Yeah, thank you, Kevin. I got no respect in here. Thank you. It was fire. It was not as funny. It was not as funny as cooter Libby for Congress, but that's to be expected. Well, Jen kirkman is a professional award winning writer. I can't compete with that. Yeah. Next, I was excited to learn about your new babies, but I also, you also mentioned that Danny Sepp is moving in with you how exciting. I buried the lead, didn't I? Yes. You did the lead. Yes. When do we get to meet her and does she even know about it? She doesn't know about it. She does know about you. We're doing this. In the basement. We're doing it slowly. It's a very slow speed you haul. Because she's not giving up her place yet. It's a thing. Well, I will keep you posted. Second, Travis. Yes. Using a dog door is a glory hole would require some uncomfortable squatting. We need to work on that. Especially someone as tall as Travis. All right, I've never said I would have. Yes. I think you've lived here. Your time. No, no, no. A couple more. Oh, all right. Okay. Hello. I'm sorry that I missed your birthday, but I spent 7 hours in the spa, so I'm sure you're on that day, so you'll forgive me. I will forgive you. When I called on Tuesday, I forgot to mention, I do this thing on my flights where I watch movies like classic movies for the first time, and on the way to and fro, I watched The Godfather one and two, you have got to watch those movies. I've seen The Godfather. You see part two? I haven't seen it. I heard that's better. Yeah. Well, that's where the quote, my favorite part were the gun take the cannoli. And I can handle it. I'm smart, not like people said like dumb. Right. And that one's in the second one. I was waiting for all of godfather for that. Well, because the Trump defense has been having afraid of offer. And lastly. Is it Don or Eric? Who can vote? It's true. Oh, he has one more. If I do not speak to you tomorrow, I want you to have a safe trip Sunday and give grandma a big hugging kiss from all 6 million of us and wish her a happy 100 birthday. I will. Thank you, honey. Love you. That's a number that is sticking in our 41. And he always gives service to the big lie before I let him talk. If talker's magazine says we have 6 million listeners a week. It's true. It's true. Down in California, hello, Don. Hey, good morning, everybody. Just a quick note about the huckleberry Sanders and what's the name death dentist down there? Yes. With their COVID stuff that they've been announced. Correct me if I'm wrong, but practicing medicine without a license is illegal, isn't it? I mean, that's what they're doing. They're given medical advice and they're not talking. Yeah, they're also so political. It's dangerous. It's actually dangerous medical misinformation, but the point was well taken. All right, Ellie stall coming up. 45 minutes after the hour, this portion of the show. Brought to you by mamba socks. Today's performance day, thanks for

"And sponsors and letting them know that you're listening. It really means a lot to us So back, let's go to a speed round. So we can get to everybody who's been waiting patiently here on the Tom Holland program. I'm Jeff Smith. And yes, Tom will be with us back on Monday. Thank you so much for being so gracious and kind to me this week. Thanks for the whole team here to Joyce and to Sean and to Nate, appreciate you. And of course, appreciate Tom and Louise as well. They will be back on Monday, but let's go to you. This is your show after all. The legendary reformer from eagle rock, go ahead. Yeah. Yesterday, somebody talked about paradigm shifts with the end of racism and I forget the other one. Oh, I know violence versus nonviolence rather than white supremacy and non plates. But the paradigm shift I want to make is about abortion. The conversation abortion because it's such a buzzword, whether you're religious rights or your anti abortion, it's a buzzword. So my statement is anybody who has that conversation about abortion, the question is, when those an adult female who's fertile, when does she give up her right or does she ever give right into whom? Motherhood. It's a matter of motherhood, not about abortion or non abortion. When does a female and adult female not have the right to determine motherhood? I appreciate the call. And I know how my dad would put it. I tried to defer as much as possible to mothers tend to potential mothers when I'm thinking about and talking about this stuff, but I'll also cite my dad who is not a mother and never will be one. The way he put it was the question is and particularly talking to religious audience. He would say the question is not whether abortion or whether terminating being mother being a mother is a sin. The question is whether it should be a crime. And that is a critical question. I appreciate the call. We'll do speed round

"First question is Do I have recourse? No, my homeowners. Okay, go ahead. Just wanted to answer your question. Yeah, right. Right. Right. You're just really okay. Do I have recourse to my homeowner's association to resolve encroachment of neighbors trees on my property? Yeah. Yeah, it's probably your neighbor's probably in violation of the CCN ours. Would you have a copy of? You can always get a copy from the association and you start reading it Now. It's a lot of reading. But you already know that. Okay? Doesn't think it's beginning. And does it say in there that you cannot encroach on neighbors with you? You can't You're not allowed to do this to say that. I haven't checked it yet because I didn't know to do it. But I do have a copy of this. They want to read the word keyword search on the word encroachment. Yeah. You want to look at the sea cnrs and look at encroachment. Uh and, uh, that can control everything. But you have a general encroachment issue anyway. But if it's specific within the sea cnrs, then the H O A has to act on your behalf and go after the Go after the neighbor because not only do you have a general rule just a legal issue, uh, that you can't do that to a neighbor. "Thanks for joining us. Anthony thank you for having me. We just kind of want to start out by asking you a little bit about your background. There's been this kind of gap in filipino academic research. And and i think you're part of the sort of growing number of scholars that is focusing on the lived experiences of filipino. Americans can you tell us a little bit about your own childhood. And what motivated you to focus on filipino. Americans in your work. So i'm a son of immigrants. My parents migrated from the philippines in one thousand nine hundred eighty and then i was born shortly. Thereafter nineteen eighty-one and i grew up in a very robust filipino. American community so i i grew up most of my life in eagle rock which folks Me no has a significant number of filipino. American residents And i also like many filipinos in this country grew up with a very very large extended family that i spend a lot of time with it so most weekends were spent at like filipino. Social gatherings My parents house was the place where when new relatives were migrating from the philippines and getting settled in the us. They'd often stay with my parents for a number of weeks number of years in. So i just had a plethora of filipino reference points and then of course lake because of where i live the school that i went to also had a large number of filipinos in so i guess i've always had the opportunity to just observe how being filipino. American culture is in my everyday life from the food to the inner general dynamics to visits to the home country And that's that's i guess we're all interest started.

"I share in common is that we both lived in vegas. She actually grew up there and spent many of her formative years on the strip whereas i only spent a year. They're performing jubilee. Las vegas is truly a unique place. In terms of the types of shows offered and the kinds of audiences they get. It's it's just a different experience from other stages around the country especially new york. New york audiences are people that you can actually really get to know you. Walk out of a theater Even if you're on stage you walk on the people who live your work their fans but then you find out that they're actors and artists as well and you might see them in audition room or you might see that. I'm person that that. Ask for your autograph on the subway. The training oh my god i remember you from the show and you were so good and the so great or you go to west end cafe. Everybody's there and you know and you know people get to know each other on las vegas. It's touristy race nothing. That new york's naturist but there's so many artists who've come from other places to new york in vegas so many people come there to to gamble and danny see shows but then you know you could. I've never performed it one of the big show at the siegfried and roy's or the What lo had a show. They're leaning on the big Bette midler they all have shows there. But i've never experienced getting a dancer. One of those shows you just dance for my friends. I've had friends in shows and so watching them and how they will do their dance chicago. It's they're on tour and then they're done and they go to their hotel room or they go out to party but you don't see any fans people don't know who you are. You don't get to know the tours because at tourist goes these these show and thereafter gambling and going out to dinner or doing something else. So there's a cultural a theater cultural performance culture that i love about new york that you don't get in vegas. It's true that that stage door ritual is really something unique to if i can say that is unique to new york theater in particular. I i mean i think you know. La is not really as much of a theater town. But certainly there's a little bit of it but new york particular. There's something about audiences whether they're the tourists who've come in. Who who love this show or loved this this particular actor or actress like me who just want to be in that show you know that stage door Kind of assembly line of going down and autographs and greeting people is a lot of fun. And you know. I've only been on one side of it so far but You know. I look forward to being on the other side eventually lost. Yes i look forward to seeing you on site. It's just interesting how you could be on a show and betas and walk out and no one knows that you were in the show. Nobody knows that you were dancing behind. You know britney spears and you're not okay for the show that i was in jubilee it's mostly the topless women that that's who gets all the attention i us singers. Were really just there so that the dancers could change costumes. Were there to just kind of be a filler okay. Now let's bring back on why you're really here right. Exactly and of course the woman topless. I mean who's gonna talk bat. I mean come on. I'm leading him down the stairs. But they're they're the star of the show they'll speaking of of stars you had mentioned working with andrea shields who is just an icon of my. I absolutely love him. And i think for many people eve. I've been following his career for a long time. But i think he really hit a high point. Both in winning the tony award but also that speech that he gave and it's kind of become a mantra. Not only for me. But for this podcast so i would like to share with you. Just three cardinal rules of my ability and longevity one surround yourself with people whose eyes light up when they see you coming too slowly the fastest way to get to where you want to be and three. The top of one mountain is the bottom of the next six. What was it like working with him. Day in and day out. I i had to get over my starstruck rate because i i tend to just come in and just go to work regardless of. Who's in the room. But there's certain people that. I know myself that i'm just gonna take a minute like the minute i am going to put out there. Dominant work over gina king. Is you notice. I keep bringing her up. I feel like whatever day almost with her. Anita our to just stop staring at right. So i was like that with me for andre. In the beginning. I was so nervous because again i knew who he was. He didn't know who i was like. i loved him. I knew about him because he was the original whiz. Hearing that cast album a mother growing up justin theater knowing all of that and just knowing would icon he was and is still is i when i got cast as his daughter. I was so nervous. I was like gosh. Talk about pressure in the barbie and raised and bringing it because watching him work and rehearsals and the lines and just how he would come to rehearsal and he was ready. Just the registered action This block lines are in his body he he. He knew what the right questions to ask. I learned how to really collaborate with your director through him of certain things that you that. You're not clear about how to approach a director and how to really just put together a show and watching him leader show because you know he's playing w. e. b. two boys in the in the plate. Knock me a kiss. And he's you know he has to carry the show and then it's not just him. It's me it's you know. Jillian eagle rock amari. Just the other. Cast members sean. All of us together as a unit. And so i learned really how as the lead of the show. You caring everybody else with you and how important that is to. So it's not just about you in the show and your character about the show as a whole in who's coming. Who's there with you in the pressure of that. And so i just as. He embraced me like to this day. He calls daughter. I call him papa because we bonded so much. And whenever i had questions i would ask him and he would be the answer and and he was just he was just such a delight you know. Of course it's like you know royalty so of course the boundaries of because you'd you gonna come to andre. You gotta come correct right. But he was very generous and very open and available to me. And i really don't think i've could could have gotten to that performance without him because i was so nervous if because he was playing my dad and i was and he was just not a diva to me. It was really nice and warm and loving and it made it made it easier because you know you hear stories about people being shows with people who for whatever reason there the way they are. And i did not have that experience him and i'm just glad because one of my fears of meeting people that i love and look up to is that it doesn't work out and then i'll be boohooing my bed. You know it's amazing when you get to work with those people who really lead by example and it sounds like that. That's what he did for you. He was definitely. Yeah i i think about it and it's one of my favorite formulas that i remember being told by one of my mentors that you know if you can count on one hand performances that change your life. You're you're lucky as an artist and so That's one of my top. Five is just So far that that time experience and being with him in really learning on and playing up real person you know. Because i played. Wabc boys real daughter two boys and the pressure of playing somebody who really exist on is very hard to. Because you gotta bring it. You gotta make sure your researches intact. You have to make sure that you're not doing injustice. The family and would have their nephew audience of their niece or granddaughter. Somebody who the bloodline comes in. They're like you missed the boat. That's that there was that pressure to go. It certainly sounds like that. You're able to rise to that challenge in that show. Yes.

Go handle here on a Monday morning, January 25. As Jennifer just said tha the governor has lifted his statewide stay at home order Shutdown order, and now we're back to the color of tears. And so I don't have to worry about it here in L. A county because we're going to never make the tear that's going to open up business being the epicenter of the world. In terms of the number of cases. I mean, look at that The statistics were 4% of the population of the world were 25% of the world cases. I mean, how crazy is that? Larry King died on Saturday at the age of 87. What an interesting, interesting man. Probably known as the consummate interviewer of the last 25 30 years. His roll index was unbelievable. The people that he got did get all the way from presidents to major stars. I think a lot of it has to do not only was he a good interviewer, I'm a fan of his interview his prowess, but they were all softball interviews. I don't want to come down on Larry King. I want to talk about his life and his legacy. But, uh, everybody we've been taught about how many people could get Well, yeah. When you know that you're a star, or you're a political figure. You got to get the easy questions. But let's say that that let's set that aside for a moment, uh, I want to talk about him. And what a fascinating guy. Uh, he was born. Uh, here. United States. His parents were immigrants, Jewish immigrants, and they, like many other Jewish immigrants came over came over with nothing. And started a small delicatessen business and he grew up. It wasn't a very wealthy neighborhood that he he grew up in, but from very early days he wanted to be on radio. And I could just imagine what his parents said. Nice Jewish family. What radio? What are you nuts? Become a doctor, a lawyer. It's probably not the accent they had, by the way, I think they were more of an East European. But here he was just totally enamored of radio. So what he did. Is. He comes from New York and hey, want to be a radio, and he got a job at his tiny little radio station in Florida. Miami. And his job was sweeping the place up effectively. He was the janitor. And then a DJ. One of the DJs doesn't show up. Literally quit. I'm not coming in. And now you have this to the station manager only. Ah, you over. There's like 42nd Street, the musical you over there, You want to be on the air, and that's how he got started. Everybody has a different story. When you think about how people break into television or radio And So, uh, being Larry King. He was very good at what he does. Hey, kept on just moving up. And he had he had the first set nationally syndicated call in show. I don't know if you knew that he was up to 300 stations. At one point, hugely successful and then in the eighties, there was a guy who owned a brand new network. Ted Turner had this fledging little network called CNN 24 Hour news. And it was, uh, this was new stuff. No one had ever heard of a 24 hour news station, and it lost it shirt by the way for a very long time. And it was Ted Turner, who kept on saying This is the wave of the future and I was a visionary really was And in early days he hired Larry King. To be to have the interview show much like he did on the syndicated radio show and for a period of time, Larry King had the number one show on CNN. And had a listenership of what 15 18 people Early in those days, Cable news didn't do very well. It lost money you could. You could pay $10 for a commercial. But as CNN took off, and as people got used to 24 hour news, can you imagine not having 24 hour news today? You've got what MSNBC. You have Fox. You have CNN Blanche of other ones. Newsmax. I think Spectrum has one. Spectrum TV has a local show with 24 hours, maybe even national show. And so it's just part and parcel of who we are in those days. It wasn't so hey, kept on moving up on his beginning salary at CNN. Was $100,000 a year, which actually is pretty good when the Larry King show went on CNN's has started Uh and he ended up with about $7 million a year, which is pretty good in the world of cable news. And what he was known for eyes all as I said that going back to the beginning of the segment, all of the interviews he was getting, for example, Frank Sinatra his last interview, it was impossible to get Frank Sinatra They were friends, Marlon Brando. It was completely impossible to get Marlon Brando sitting in for an interview they never met. They hit it off so well during the course of the show is the 2 90 minute interview that Marlon Brando ends up kissing Larry King Live on the air, kisses him on the mouth. Now we're not talking about swabbing tonsils. We're not talking about one of those kinds of kisses. But one of those European kind of parent child kind of thing. And then there were all kinds of floods and the other thing that he did, and this one. He's actually being given credit for this and that is he would never read a book. When he was interviewing the author. He would never prepare. For an interview..

Reading the tea leaves

"Album to own a rousing carry the show where we just report on fringe science spirituality and claims of the paranormal. But take pride ourselves Yup make the claims we show up. So you don't have to. Carry poppy and finally a hot drinks investigation. That's right. Yeah. So what's in the tea leaves for this investigation? It's funny. You should say it that way because we are or something in the cards investigating hope nope. You were there and then you have the right idiom. Tea Leaves Tea Leaf reading my goodness. They still do that sort of a feels like something from bygone era totally. Yeah. So people used to do this to read your fortune you get loose leaf tea put it in a cup swish it around turn it a certain way and the way those tea leaves fell told Jim Things about your future or your past there's even an autograph named for this task theocracy. Reading tea leaves. So if your name is Tassie Take Note Aka Tassio Mansi Oh. Okay. So AMAS Tassie. But you're Mansi. This has been around for a long time in various forms goes way back the idea that you drink your tea but you know you do it with all the loose leaf plant matter in your debris, right? Yeah. t debris not like these nice little treatise. Not, that you like. Dunk one of these Handy Dandy little teabags that we now it's Lipton tea or something come on let's be clear and then afterwards will not be. You've got these dregs at the bottom and what are you gonNa do with them just throw them out. No learn the future from them why not turn trash into treasure your on at tank you. Good So. So yeah the ideas then after you've drunk your tea hot drinks. Then, you swirl around what's left and it forms these images that you can use either like a symbol dictionary or maybe you've assembled your own Interpretations Yeah Oga Point I bet that's where this came from kind of looking at the clouds and saying it's a bunny and that means that I'll get a bunny. That's that's my God is that this is kind of an invocation of payroll. Yeah. Oh, we have kind of random splatter pattern. Let's use that to read our own subjective messages into it. Paradise is the known psychological phenomenon where we see something that looks even vaguely like it could be a face or. Anything that might threaten US or in have agency. We will see that. Yes. So that is the first thing we'll see and even if it. Looks like. Face on Mars. Just under the right grainy settings. Is Selective angle of lighting yeah. We'll make out that face or we'll make out that eagle or whatever it may be. My favorite example is the front of a neon car just naturally looks like it's smiling at you. Oh. Yeah right yeah. There are certain cars I'll follow behind like Oh. That looks like a happy old man right car and it's interesting how many place names come from certain geographical features that look like. Something like Eagle, rock near US air is Iraq the mail in profile Kinda looks like an eagle. Yeah. To us. Would it look like an eagle to a cat or a pigeon? No one asks them because they have different ways a sensing the world. But in this case we've got tea leaves in a teacup someone looked at them and yeah, I, would I would guess said, Oh, you know what I see a sword. That means your life is threatened right? It certainly doesn't mean I need to clean up this cup. Eventually. Hopefully, the cup gets cleaned. And people done this with coffee as well. Oh. Really. Okay which. With the grounds probably have grounds for prophecy there. Yeah boy I never really thought about how this is really just an excuse for being very sloppy, Cook. Well, it's clean up afterwards but yeah, and it seems like people have like their preferred types of tea which plants they're using. But we we've got a couple options here and we lefty E.. We also found out that you can order a tea leaf reading without even drinking tea. Absolutely. You can have someone else drink for you or say that they did. And give you a reading. Someone is available to do that. So actually this happened back when we had our episode about the Emergency Tarot reading this is back in early July night we sent out a bunch of things we signed up for various at sea stuff and I've just had in the back of my mind this whole time that I have tea leaf reading in my inbox that I haven't even read a- from July. Okay. So we'll get to double dip this particular teabag because if it applied to in July or if it applies to be now, oh, right. Impress war if she or he or they said something specific about what would happen immediately following the reading. Test exactly I sent you the deal that I had used when I did the search tea leaf reading or t reading, and then I realized I had actually bought three tea leaf reading. So Geez at the same time. So from different vendors. Yeah. I. Still haven't read them I'm excited to find out what these different tea leaf readings said about me. Okay. So let's place bets. Do you think of the four tea leaf readings? We've got three for you. The one for me do you think any of them will include a picture of the actual t they supposedly drank? I would love that I'm going to guess no, I'm going to guess no as well. That would be cool. It seems like. A basic thing in this world of cell phones if you're going to all that trouble of making tea, drinking it for me and looking at the shapes that came thereby that you would take a

Racism in the Time of Coronavirus With Phil Yu of 'Angry Asian Man'

"I've been following your posts on twitter and I know you're tracking a lot of what's going on in terms of Anti Asian racism xenophobia and hate crimes related to cove in nineteen. I myself as you know. Experience something very recently As angry Asian man. What are you noticing in terms of the things that are happening? Asian-americans what are the stories that are sticking with you? I mean this is coming for a little while no actually. It was a slow trickle but us we started hearing about people giving people funny. Looks Giving Asians Weird looks and interacting weird handshakes and things like that are non handshakes. It's just as escalated now. Now that covert is in the news. Twenty four seven people. Want someone to blame you know what I mean and it just feels like it's really come to head now and it's. It's actually almost halfway acceptable. I think everybody knows that. This is a major concern. And so I feel like Asians are kind of the face of this in a way and And that's that's frightening scary and when you say it's been a slow trickle like when did you start kind of hearing about racist incidents or or seeing it in the news it started about a month back maybe and I it was just jokes right? It was just like people making fun of others. Like if you're Asian and you're sneezing or coughing in public like people would like give you a funny look or even say something you know and like a kids with other Asian kids on the playground Corona Virus. It started escalate. Maybe two weeks back. We started hearing about more verbal harassment or people being on edge and then the last week really is when it blew up. I mean look. Historically Asians is always been kind of seen as. There's always been this stereotype of Asians as dirty as as as foreign and creating brain disease this country right. It's it's sort of this. The stereotype has been used to drum up xenophobia and Anti Asian. Hate in this country. This goes back you know since the beginning of this country and so the viruses origins and China. That's a ripe ready. Excuse for people to use that to direct their hate at Asians once again. You know it's part of the whole yellow peril complex that this country seems to be mired in I through its history. I'm glad you brought up history because just off the top of my head. I think about like Japanese Americans during World War Two and how they faced. You know incarceration in concentration camps at that time. They were being blamed in their japanese-american right. Can you think of other or can you can share other times in history? That kind of stick out. That are maybe similar to what we're experiencing right now. I mean around the time with the sort of the Anti Asian sentiment that resulted in the Chinese exclusion act. I mean there. There're people rounding up Asians in towns and driving them out and lynching them you know it's always when people feel threatened economically there's economic anxiety around sort of the threat of Asian labor force or even in the eighties win. The Japanese auto industry was kind of a threatening the American auto industry right. I mean you saw like a deep anti-japanese segment during that time which resulted in the death of it's enchanting exactly. I'm glad you brought that up. Because I was honestly thinking about him because he was Chinese American and he was beat up. Asians are all the same right so these guys are just placed their anger on this one person and it led to his death. I mean I couldn't I I write about sort of hate crimes and and racism and stereotypes and a lot of anti-asian stuff over the years And I've always felt relatively like it's always grim and it's hard to hear but I've always felt relatively safe and privilege from where I stood. You know what I mean. You know when trump tweeted and called it the China virus for the first time publicly. That was the first time I actually felt like could endanger you. Know really like an illegitimate way. You know I just thought about like how I run errands and in the evenings you know go get gas or groceries or something like that and I don't know for the first time I was like I don't know if I feel totally one hundred percent safe going out alone you know in this climate and I'm korean-american you know but people see my face they're not gonNA give a shit about that right. You brought up being afraid or feeling uncertain by going out. I mean I after what I experienced. You know that was in Eagle Rock. Which is pretty Filipino neighborhood? So I thought I was in a safe environment right but you know this can't be the first time in your life you felt. Like someone's accosted you for being Asian though right now but it's the first time for a related to like pandemic I've never lived there pandemic. Yeah right but I feel like this sentiment has always been kind of simmering below the surface. You know what I mean like your you know. We talk a lot about the model minority myth you know. And that was that's sort of this weird characterization of Asians as being able to assimilate very well you know be successful and stuff like that. It's deeply problematic. But you know that whole thing shatters actually would never were faced with something like this right where you know. Guess what you're never really going to assimilate ever you're never that welcome here. You have this face that makes you stick out you know. It's it's that perpetual foreigner. Our communities always characterized by you know and so guess what it just take this moment here to give people the green light to express that you know and how quickly things can turn right. Yeah I mean you. You've been covering this for almost twenty years right. How do you compare this moment to other things you've covered in the past? I mean ever seen anything like this before what's happening in terms of racism and xenophobia. No I've never seen anything like this. I've read about it right. We have these historical examples where it was very much the case with like this kind of sentiment and violence was very real and very out in the open but this is the first time in my lifetime where it feels like this is. Oh this is like one of those moments history. And I don't like I don't like the feeling of living through it honestly Yeah no this is. This is nothing really like this. I mean a global pandemic is. It's a nightmare scenario. Now it's real and then the stuff that comes along with that with regard to my identity my community. I had never really wanted to let myself think about that. But it's here you know. Yeah I mean. What do you think's GonNa Happen? What's your outlook on this in the coming weeks or months or even years and do you see anything positive or any changes had. I think it's GonNa get it's GonNa get worse you know what I mean It's going to get worse before it gets better. I hate to paint a bad brush in be alarmist but I'm I am truly like Kinda frightened by this in concerned this sentiment this anti-asian feeling across the United States is on the open. You know and people are mad and confused and scared and they want someone to blame in so you know I think it might get worse and then it'll get better. I you know the other part of that is that were more equipped to fight back or more equipped to raise this as an issue. I would hope that we have more allies to recognize this as well. Honestly it is hard to combat when you have the person in charge being totally okay with it you know. Is there anything? Asian Americans should be doing. You think or something we can do in this moment. You just mentioned like bringing this up calling it out when we can but are there other kind of tangible things you think about not to give us more work in the time of global pandemic let you. I think it's a good time to reflect recognized that this is our moment where we're going through a great deal of hardship but this is also the story of America in the ser- marginalized people throughout this country's history. You know it's been bad for everybody particularly bad at different points in history. This unfortunately is another part or story. Right and so Maybe recognizing that this kind of hardship or suffering it goes across all groups goes across all the all the folks who try to make it in trying to get by. I don't know man I I yeah. I hope we can all get together. We're going to get through this as a

With Black Voters and a Suburban Surge, Joe Biden Took Texas

"And I gotta say we were pretty surprised last night the Joe Biden was able to pull this out a lot of the polls had Bernie Sanders doing very very well yeah pretty disappointing showing what's it say about the state of the party right I think it did in the Democratic Party and non democratic I is very strong and unified and this is an argument that I've been looking for a very long time that one is not a Democrat and the idea that we're going to line up behind someone who doesn't even want to be in our club Adam is problematic on its face and that we shouldn't be making assumptions about a rate before we heard from African American voters are the core voting bloc of the Democratic Party and you know I was in Iowa and New Hampshire or Iowa one of the more disappointing evening we got the results from my yet I think we're still waiting on those he won by a like half of hers that by you know I'm sitting there thinking like were you know you are on TV ads on TV on radio podcast all about it when we're driving up content Meredith right about what's going on and every bit of information and back out right away and I found myself wanting to get wait be quiet and say just wait hello we have not had black actor Edward most reliable voters on the democratic side say what they think about that then I mean you've been using the same time that I wonder Hampshire kind of turning around either Bernie Sanders are people to judge or Amy Klobuchar having a really good one Burke was riding high remember when you got it second and third place with that perking up and Caroline I want him to be on the ballot but had not all the advertising and Joe Biden we would black voters really getting trapped in it went from forty or fifty point thirty point twenty point thirty think what's going on here is not a white liberal progressive primaries and caucus is going to drive what happens after Alaina and I've recommended the people down there works very closely with what kind of bird thank you me now now now now what black motors will come home enjoyable you know Biden at home and I think the indoor kind of web platform can't be underestimated and all of that and also what you're buying what people call us in convincing Amy and keep her drop out and not only drop out because when I did dalet right and in the worst side by side very moving moment obviously when you compare it to his son battle hit late and battle and I think Amy did that the backbeat he auditioned she caught her eye considering the circumstances on Monday night in Dallas and you know that okay that's how so what a burger or whatever skateboarding is a way to interest I would never date bad girl I mean anything more than I had crews go out right I got it I was like okay I get why people are into that a little overly energized and he just had to wait more than I do which is hard to do it all came together yeah he's a he was a bit of a goofy Canada but it's I'm sure nice for finding that he got the endorsement I want to know why why do black voters like Joe Biden I don't understand I I get why they wouldn't like to judge or a Bernie Sanders or any of the other democratic candidates that I don't like but what are they like about Joe Biden I think a lot of it is just about showing up first of all there's a lot of discussion about what goes on in terms of retail politicking with the black community right that people might come around when you need their vote yeah Joe Biden actually has always come around and and not just when you need a boat I think his state is the substantive part of that he talked about his Catholic faith and I don't know if you thought that the and I have always had a very building exchange what's your name enamel eagle rock can't white in the shooting there where he talks about his personal faith and and the unifying nature out believing in something bigger than ourselves obviously being Michael Bowman VP matters a lot but you know there there there's a bit of a false narrative I think surrounding the crime bill for engine which people like to forget or at least liberal like you forget that it was overwhelmingly supported by the black community and black people on the ground and all the black politicians and pastors who were ready for these measures that they are the people who actually have to live in the community they want to clean up their own three yeah right and I think that's why you D. A. R. E. we are blowing her top about the crime bill and black voters generally at least one over the age of sixty giving you a shrug and paying back with the time demand right and Joe Biden and do this because he's a racist and I like Bernie Sanders also correct right he he hate to talk about that but I'm just gonna put that on the record and there's a collective shrug because the times were different it doesn't mean things weren't wrong and we can talk about boxing and is that what and what it did to community but I don't think that the narrative that the car last or that right wingers were trying to create about Joe Biden was ever going to resonate with that core voting bloc that feels fundamentally comfortable with him similarly to how they felt about
