"The number one story is the number one story. It's hard to find any about. The americans left behind afghanstan. The reason you won't find out about it much. As the wall street journal headline this morning biden seeks to shift focus to domestic issues after afghanistan exit. He wants us now to forget that he abandoned the thousands of americans and l. Pr's and i'm just going to start saving thousands of americans because while we know between one hundred two hundred american citizens and we don't know if that's the real number i frankly have credibility issues with team biden because they're being paid about this but what does it say hundreds of citizens and thousands of legal permanent residence l. ers so it's thousands of americans because an american green card holders at american. They're not a full citizen but they choose not to be but they are often days weeks months a year away from citizenship. White House Calls for State, Local Eviction Moratoriums After Supreme Court Ruling
"Advocates and court officials were gearing up today for what some fear will be a wave of addictions. Others, however, predicting it will just be a growing trickle after U. S Supreme Court action allowing the lockouts to resume. The high court's conservative majority late yesterday blocked the Biden administration from enforcing a temporary ban place because of the coronavirus pandemic. The action ends protections for about 3.5 million people in the US who say they face eviction in the next two months. The court's action does not affect the temporary bans on evictions placed by a handful of states, including California, White House Press secretary Jen Psaki said. The Treasury Department and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Marcia Fudge today sent a letter to all governors, mayors and county officials urging them. To implement their own eviction moratoriums. President Biden would, of course, support congressional action to authorize an eviction moratorium, and the Supreme Court has now clearly outlined that as the sole way a moratorium could remain in effect now, at the same time, I think it's important to remember what our objective is here. Our objective is to keep as many people around the country in their homes as possible. Federal legislation is one way to do that. Obviously, the eviction moratorium we had have had in place and we've been issuing month to month is one way to do that. But the ER a funding that came through the American rescue plan, and it's going out to states is another way to do that, and we have asked, and we have put out today. The Department of Treasury and the secretary of It has the same impact right because it is preventing people from being kicked out of their homes. And these states have the funding thanks to the American rescue plan to get that done now, the other place that's our responsibility that we continue to focus on is working to eliminate any red tape that exists.

Thousands Flee Homes As Utah Wildfire Advances

It's kind of surreal. I think we always knew there was a possibility of it happening here, especially with what's been going on fire wise and climate wise in recent times, um, but it's a little bit different when it actually happens. The widespread consensus of climate scientists is that climate change makes large destructive wildfire is more likely because of hotter temperatures and drier vegetation. Climate Change Is Harming Peoples Health, ER Doctor Says
"Tell us it's an emergency medicine. Doctor at massachusetts general hospital in boston for her global warming is not some abstract future threat. I'm already seen ways in which climate change is contributing to health harms in my patients in boston today whether it's illness due to more extreme heat like an elderly man living in lower income housing without air conditioning suffering heatstroke or a young girl with repeated emergency department visits due to asthma attacks as climate change drives pollen to be higher global warming is also worsening wildfires which create smoke. That's harmful debris it's increasing the prevalence of tick and mosquito borne illnesses. And it's causing more extreme and dangerous storms. the consequences go beyond human suffering. Increased hospital admissions emergency department visits and long term treatment cost a lot of money they can fall on the individual can fall on the insurance company or the government or on the hospital system. So that means we're all bearing the burden in some way and this we have to work together to get to the root cause and reduce global
Unraveling The Death of 'The Toxic Lady', Gloria Ramirez
"When she got to the hospital. Glorious heart was beating at a rate of more than one hundred beats per minute. Why did they need to fibrillation her. That seems like jumpstarting a car. That's already running hot. You know also. It just seems to me that pumping someone full of sedatives and then zapping. Their heart with electricity is a weird sequence of events. I'm sure they knew what they were doing. It's just as a lay person sitting here at my desk. It seems weird also can only hope the iv. The paramedics administered in the ambulance was to take blood because by the time nurse. Cain went to get a blood sample. Gloria was so hopped up on medical grade goof-balls that her blood probably would have gotten anyone within fifteen feet of it high. Wouldn't they wanna check someone's blood before dumping a whole bunch of shed into it like maybe make sure she didn't already take a bottle full of valium before giving her more valium next. Let me just ask why. The decision was to move the entire. Er to the parking lot. If dr our cia thought gloria was the problem why not just move gloria outside. Wouldn't that have been easier than moving the entire er department it's possible. Show a thought. The problem was coming from the er itself like the ventilation system or whatever but then. Why didn't gloria get evacuated as well and look. I'm sure dr ocho made whatever decisions he thought were best in the moment. I can't think straight under that kind of pressure which is why dr ochoa is a doctor. And i am a podcast art. Could you imagine getting rushed to the er for like i dunno hemorrhaging blood or something. The ambulance gets to the parking lot out front. And it's like well here. We are literally right here. And there's just rows of gurneys with moaning people and some doctors like who's nissan altima is this. I'm hanging an. Iv bag from the roof rack. The official cause of gloria ramirez death was kidney failure due to cervical cancer or possibly heart failure. I'm telling you the reporting on this case is all over the place. Whatever it was that ultimately killed her. Everyone was still trying to figure out what it could have possibly been about. Gloria that was making medical staff around her pass out.

How about Cole Hamels signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers, which gives them Incredible depth or see where he's at. He's a little like Madison Bumgarner. "Is it still the lack of personal protective equipment. I think that's like has just been buried so far down in life things just public given up on because so many people are just dying so we're just like fuck it. We'll just fight this war with whatever got. Yeah so what is your current pp. Are you still getting everything you need or are using getting donation. I'm getting donations now kid. But that's me. I can't say the same of other. Doctors don't have donations right for our listeners. Who are in new york and want to donate. How do you suggest they go about doing that. I'd say the safest things have find someone you know that personally working on the frontlines shelter. We're going just give it to them to distribute because this is so many middlemen with the other way and you know i hear reports of administrators locking them up in rationing about so i even safe to drop it off the hospital. That's what been near so just just give it to someone you trust personally. Yeah how are your care teams doing when you're showing up to these different emergency departments on each shift and working with new nurses new. Ama's new supporting staff. How do you continue to effectively be the quarterback at a time like this and make sure that what needs to get done actually gets done. I mean i have a pretty good first impression with my team. It's kind of nice to have a ten walk in handing out. Free and ninety five now sets the pace. I said i always make sure. I said of base and i started shift especially the beginning of the day So lucky in that my team he knows me and knows how it works so Especially with the marathon. A lot of people do know of my style in new york city area and to that worked in many different emergency rooms people. You know talk about how. I am so when i walk and people just kind of hit the ground running with me so i'm lucky in that regard as of this morning or at least the interviews being done the. Us now leads the world in one thousand nine infections. I want to zoom out for just a moment and ask you how your work during a time like this here in the home. Ground in new york compares to some of the mission trips. You've been on our some of the work done overseas. it's different so that overseas have different challenges and different problems. But i lose the bottom line. Was i wasn't even concerned about protecting myself in those places. Here it's ironic that in new york city. My home base. I'm worried about protective personal protective equipment. And other places we were well protected. They made sure we take care of. They knew that we were valuable resource to help in their fight against wherever they were dealing with that. You can't take care of others unless you take care of yourself a different culture as well and then people weren't scared when we travel service but not really scared because we were you know dell protected but here staff. That are scared. Because they don't know who's supporting them really you know. I think also an expectation. I think you go internationally. You don't really know what to expect year your expectations a little higher. Because joe homebase said you're being left with the reality that it's not living up to your expectations okay with emergency room crowding becoming a widespread problem in hospital across the united states. I wanted to ask you who you think should still be coming into the to see care. You name thing was two one two weeks ago. Five months ago ton. Ten months ago any time go to the emergency room if you have a lamb or life threatening emergency. That's not changed right. You don't come to emergency room for medication refills. You don't come to the emergency room because you can't sleep or because you want sandwich or because you don't know who else to call or it's cold outside like right doing so we will be happy to take care of you. Don't get me wrong. They care of you but overburdening already collapsing healthcare system that is not sustainable by coming for those things and especially in the pandemic. You do so right up. You're destroying us. You're killing other people. Yeah and so. You know speaking of other emergencies I'm just curious myself. How does your board look right now. Is it mostly respiratory symptoms. That are coming in. It's all some variation of respiratory symptoms. People would even like say that they have respiratory symptoms. And when i see them they actually want to work note. And calvin i want to switch gears for just a moment and ask you a few had the good news come to you recently. Any positive thoughts or a silver lining in all this. Wow what a long pause whether it's donations or donations are good. No i am very grateful that i have a lot of supportive friends and a great Network but the reason why didn't recall that he's even as a positive thought is that. Why do i live in a world where i need to depend now on donations for something that should be basic protection supplied by mike hospitals and mike government to ask us to fight this war so i mean yes. It is a happy. I'm grateful for my friends for donating stuff. Yeah it's kind of a bittersweet feeling because it's so sad that they need to put their lives on the line going outside and putting their money down when they should pay for something that my higher ups should be covering yeah. It's it's very sobering. So i don't know i mean happy thoughts recently. We hear all this encouraging news. Things are coming. But it's even that happy because i don't see it. It's like the fires the sirens in the distance. The fire trucks are coming. I'm finding this burning fire in this building that i'm locked inside can't get out trying to get everyone out before it collapses and hear the sirens but i don't see any hoses taken out you know don't see actual things happening these all these massive start here all these ventilators yesterday last night of until two in the morning we were like having respiratory therapists. Saying i don't see ventilators. We're down to like you know single digits. Left's where the leftovers guess. If are the puzzles are getting these in my end. Ninety five ballot. Two hundred ninety five zero on. When i came back with the bag was fought. It was a sit around the pasta. Back but i was like man what somebody throughout the bag and has all gone was like three ply mass that i brought it. I guess not a lot of people wanted. Wow that's frustrating for sure. Any last words for those at home listening and the lawmakers that have the potential to help change the course. What's going on if you're listening right now in the pandemic is still going on whether has hit your area or not. Stay the fuck home. Just stay home. Just don't don't take a chance any minute. You go outside to do something i know. It's important to get some fresh air and do some exercising but if you can help it once you catch it. You're going to get sick. You're gonna start to other people. Use it increases the chance of other people getting sick and l. starts with you and other people get sick to the point. That was happens to be older person or someone with medical problems or you just happen to feed the unlucky one. That doesn't have anything in your young and get sick. You come to an emergency room when you didn't have to be because you went outside come to emergency room into take care of you in a way. That's it a point that we can't take care of you because so many other people got exposed. I don't want you to be in that position where you have to wrestle with the dilemma of whether you should stay in the hospital we can get medical care support. Have people looking after you with oxygen. You know with if sorely needed but then you're exposed to so many other patients copa nineteen co infecting new increasing our load exposure thus increasing risk of mortality and death. The dilemma breathing. Choosing that or going home. Where you are in a clean environment of orange ing no other patients there to cough on your reinfect. You catch other. Nosocomial hospital infections But you then you're alone without medical staff. That's the dilemma. We have to face with every minute in the point. Because we don't really know diseases still knew that decision's gonna go will be left up to you and you can prevent all of that by staying home if no symptoms twenty. The mild symptoms not going outsides. Staying the fuck home so you don't give it to other people give laws not dying. You're walking talking not short of breath you don't need to come to the hospital and for my lawmakers out there. Just listen to the experts fighting on fighting this all. Don't get out of your lane and save. You will better than all of us. Were in the trenches fighting this. I know it's important to have a big picture for interview into direct economy of other things on your plate but the economy will not pick up. Our country will not survive this or go back to where it was before or become better if they cannot control this pandemic. You're building a house of cards right. You're trying to build economy based on shaky foundation for where a medical healthcare system has Out to collapse. And if you don't control this pandemic how can you run a country on a successful economy with a collapsed system and half your healthcare workers sick on ventilators on life support because you didn't adequately take care of them. Yeah very well said all right. Calvin thanks for your time this week. Thanks for all that you do. Enjoy the rest of your day off and good luck on your next shift. Thank you take care. Calvin is taken his first twenty four hour break in over twenty days and we'll be heading back to the frontline this week while making this episode the us food and drug administration has issued emergency authorization for a new krona virus tests that delivers positive results in as little as five minutes and negative results in thirteen. The creator of these tests abbot laboratories just announced it. It'll start delivering fifty thousand tests per day. Starting next week would be one of the fastest tests available for kobe. Nineteen and it comes just a week after the fda approved another forty five minute rapid point of care test with all this positive news starting to slowly surface. It's important to stay hopeful but prepared manager keeler as a quick reminder. Remember the things that normally promote a healthy immune system like getting eight to ten hours asleep eating healthy and exercising as they all help in preventing you from getting sick and if you're a smoker. Here's yet another reason to quit. Smoking destroys little hair. Like fibers inside. Our noses called silia which is part of our first line of defense against infection. Also continue to keep social distancing in mind. Hi jerry i'm mary Listen i decided. I can't kiss hello anymore. I'm sorry it's nothing personal. It just makes me a little uncomfortable. And i can't do it. I'm sorry karen louise. I was just telling mary how i'm not going to be doing the kissel. Oh thing anymore. I'm sorry. I just can't do it. It's nothing personal. It's just that i'm not really able to do it if you bought the cloth and hit him with the dab coughing elbow one of the simplest ways to cut down on the spread of germs is to use something called the vampire cough. Did you say vampire. Oh no it's just that if a vampire had to cough he would do it like this right and ruined their cloaks. Do you have any idea how. Expensive wool is in transylvania. Because of the euro also makes me smile and laugh as much as possible seriously. These things reduce stress hormones like cortisol in your body and increased cortisol and our bodies suppressed our immune system so although laughter might not always be the best medicine. It's definitely a medicine and it's both free inorganic medicine. Remix fam- i hope you enjoyed today's episode of inside the hospital. And i appreciate you tuning in to the healthcare professionals and really anyone on the front line. That's probably either getting off a shift or getting ready for their next. Thank you for all that you do. Stay safe stay inside and keep it locked. I'm katie and you're staying in with edison remix for my brand. Nobody moves it for my. I had the other side by. "Great many Jen x.'ers including me including our next guest NPR's Linda Holmes who thinks we have not given that this particular film the attention it deserves she is in our studios highland hi Rachel you know I think we give it a lot of attention and it's still not as much it's still not as much as they not enough I mean you heard the music we always all started swaying here and DO IT just have been transported I was transported to that blog off to that or to the bomb with the log in the frog The Muppet movie which came out in nineteen seventy nine is a musical it is a road movie it introduces you theoretically to the story of how the Muppets all got together and became them up there is the origin story well it's the origin story it also I was telling someone the other day has a structure a little bit like cats in that each month it gets kind of a song to introduce themselves yeah you get the miss piggy song you get the five the song so this is how you meet each month but and then at the end they all find out whether they get their dream which is also what happens at the end of cats so since we all have recently seen the cats trailer as Mr ram of mine so we heard it there in the intro let's talk about the song yeah the rainbow connection all items and candy Asher wrote this beautiful song which if you know musical theater is basically the I want song of the of the show me with that is and I want song is where the character explains what their dream is and you get it in a lot of different shows but here what Kermit is is dreaming about and what he really wants is to answer all these philosophical questions about rainbows and dreaming and all the stuff it's a very unusual and and generous spirited I want song almost more of a we want songs and what is also notable about it which you write in an essay at NPR dot org difference to check it out is the lyrics that are profound and deep but then there's the actual vocalizing the song yeah the interesting thing about the songs in the Muppet movie is that unlike for example in a Disney movie if you don't have a perfect voice they get someone who has a perfect for a likely that right up most of the people who are doing the voices in this weather it's Jim Henson who does Kermit the frog or whether it's Frank oz he does miss piggy and Fawzi they are not all perfect singers all the time sometimes they're on key sometimes they're not they're singing in character voices for example there's a part later where fuzzy bear sings.

"We've seen play portals in jacksonville and that injury guarantee creep into existence because of that surgery he had after the season we've seen the forty nine ers find their quarterback of the future in jimmy garoppolo a place where for so long because of kyle shanahan kurt cousin seemed like these slam dunk option and how much that's change and we know the teams that are involved in this that we've heard over and over again and so we cycle through goes but we know it's rarely that simple in the nfl but we know that kirk cousins because of time and leverage is going to have the chance to waive visa options all of these options more so than most other players get too and for all of us selfishly and we hear about this with the nfl pa all the time they want guys to take the most and get the most out of their deal to continue to set that market for the rest of players to continue to challenge teams to go out there and spend because hell we've seen in major league baseball that if it left's goes unchallenged teams will opt to go the other way they're trying to make a buck off this answer so you'd like to keep pushing the envelope in that we would like to see for our own fascination what it looks like one he young quarterback hits the open market the prime of his career the true open market in a way that almost never happens the problem is we don't know how much that matters to kirk cousins we don't know how much of this was personal in washington by the end just feeling slighted by the way that they tried to lowballing before.

"That can protect the quarterback according to documents reviewed by espn the nfl as a league has proposed partnering with players to affect social justice improvement offering almost one hundred million dollars to funds causes that they feel are critical to african american communities this was initially reported by our jim trotter and jason read the league hopes it an effort that will effectively end the peaceful but certainly controversial movement the forty nine ers quarterback colin kaepernick started when he opted not to stand for the national anthem last season so again you have the league who appears to be poised he did not quid pro quo but appears to be poised to donate one hundred million dollars to social issues to social causes i yeah there does seem to be some discord what's really going on well i i think you have to recognize the progress and acknowledge that you know there has been some movement on this issue when you go back and think about where this was just two years ago with all the divisive rhetoric and in some of the um racial tensions in the discussions that have been happening over patriotic iconography and how you all should regard this and so now for there to be some meeting of the minds as to where uh the ownership in the players can really get together in an unprecedented way and come up with the financial commitment that if uh agreed upon will be voted upon in march to affect causes that are important to other players are particularly of the african american can can contingent i think that that is important i think what is sad on the other hand is the dissension net there seems to have uh between certain players in the players coalition that being malcolm jenkins and also in kwame bolden who and in also eric read making a statement saying that he doesn't feel like um you know the structure in the communication that has been going on in the players coalition is what he anticipated it would be in terms of wanting more of a collective voice and more of an investment from.

"He he continues to hear from front office people all around the league will we're not sure he wants to play any more is is he now fulltime activist or what's going on with him because he doesn't speak up anymore nocall reach refuse when he took the nea during the epa that with the excuse that they need okay but do you think in all objectivity would it have helped him to speak just do a media session come on come all i'll tell you exactly where i am that i want to whatever i dunno where yesterday but but that he's ready to play football no i don't skip because then i would be ought to be the the the impression the head he spoke that changes your ability to play quarterback and a proactive mattieu these guys didn't speak and he still can't play up so him speaking wasn't going to change what did you look at calling let's legislate for the sake of our to us he tightened colin kaepernick when you the forty nine ers this team with built bear similarly running game dimarco murray dig henry they have free gorekim twohomer they had a big died that don't don't leave this so you don't think no no no no because i think you told me that you heard back from may be in his canton that he felt like he shouldn't have to be to sort of crawl in beg for a job because all the others did right but remember in fairness none of those other backup quarterbacks were the face of a movement so so got confirmed for uefa you you confirm what we know alone because he would the faith of the movement they're holding that a gift him so whether he spoke could not him speaking didn't change what he did.
