"Offensive football in the NFL especially at the head coaching hiring position but you still have to remember that it's about leadership in organization and structure and discipline, and so I have to look at those qualities of whoever I hire more than how much they know XS notes. Now, my desire is to find that person who's one of the best echoes people in the NFL right now that's who. The forty, nine hundred. Shanahan and the rams got with Sean McVeigh I I have four or five names that are very top of my list. Eric be enemy would be the first call. I. Would Make I said this after the Houston. After the playoff, they can't city last year beater colored the enemy right now I just can't I know there's the belief that okay he he's not the guy. Let's not it went Andy Reed says, I've heard Andy Reid say that he's integral in their past game development in how they install their plays and whatnot and so. I think offensive scheme. Wise. She's been around and he understands it enough. At imagine being around in watching the success that he's had leading. As rubbed off on and does he have to interview better? That's something offered. Sure. But it only takes his one great interview. But if he if if if he tells me and shows me that he's a leader of men, he's one on my list. Arthur Smith is incredibly high on my list I. Think Arthur Smith is as as good. A offensive mind right now is there is in the NFL I think that watching him call that third quarter drive down twelve against Minnesota two weeks ago. Was Brilliant because it showed me great discipline which matters to me as a as a head coach. I'm so he's up there I think Brian Table and what he's done for the development of Josh, Allen in Buffalo again as a offensive trade played call right now it's just fantastic knowing that he's got a history with Sabin would matter into me. Those would be probably the three that I would. Be. Top of my list I think go call Lincoln Riley. Just because of his. Creativity on offense in a sweeper named that I'll throw out there did this a couple of weeks ago.

"That showing a lack of comfort confidence trust belief in what's going around to you don't want it to look like. like it's out of control. You want it to look like you're just ready to play football and almost like a shortstop is as he pitchers pitching the ball. Feeder ready and constantly moving. He's ready for that ball to get hit into either whole between him second base or third base where Jimmy looks to be on my gosh. I don't know what to do with the football panicky and that to me is the the biggest issue more than does he mechanically look flawed? If snacks Harrison shows up in a couple of weeks. In Seattle and if Jamal Adams gets right and maybe if John Schneider can trade something for some sort of pass rusher. Or, the SEAHAWKS. Really. Good or are they destined to be one of these teams? It's GONNA have to score thirty five every week to win. Now. The seahawks would be really good. If. It's not that they need to have a dominant pass rush. You know like I said, this couple of weeks ago the SEAHAWKS has slipped years ago it was having dominant defense and offense be good enough like just be good enough especially situationally like when we needed, you get the game to the fourth quarter. Be Good enough they've flipped. Offenses Right now dominant in defense just be good enough just be situationally good enough to get us off the field in the fourth quarter for one more possession. Now, that's certainly like a dangerous way to live I so to speak but with the secondary, that's long you know I think that Neil thirty five is going to be a really impactful player moving forward for them on their defense he's built like one of their corners but he's playing nickel inside for them but their defense doesn't need to be great. It just needs to be okay in their pass rush becomes. Okay. then. They're for real for sure. Dan Orlovsky. I'M GONNA ask you about two of your former teams that you spent a year with each. One is Houston one is Indianapolis. You're in Houston ten years ago this year. And when I think about the Houston Texans right now and what they're going to do next I think about and this is a lazy way to look at it. What coach what system is going to be best for Shawn Watson. If you're cal, McNary owner the Houston. Texans. What direction relooking in for head coach and you have one in mind you think would be ideal for the Shawn Watson. That's a great question I'd say this. We've become consumed with offensive football in the NFL especially at the head coaching hiring position but you still have to remember that it's about leadership in organization.

"So we're GONNA get to our podcast guests right now we're gonNA start with an order of ESPN. He's covered the cowboys for thousand years and he was in the stadium. In Arlington Texas on Sunday when Dak prescot suffered the devastating injury let's go to Edward. Back. In the PODCAST. Happy to be joined by Edward VI spn Ed was in the stadium in Jerry World on Sunday when Dak Prescott went down and we're going to go around the league a little bit to take advantage of your expertise. But I want to particularly take advantage of what you saw on Sunday and what it was like first of all. Can you just tell me where are you when you're covering a football game now? I mean how how, where do you watch the game from an? How're you able to do your reporting these Games now? Yeah. It's become a lot more difficult to be a reporter covering NFL teams as you might imagine, given the covid restrictions and the limited access to which were now allowed and so pre-game ordinarily beyond the field doing live reports. The first week we were moved to the observation level, which is just above the field. and. For the past two weeks, we've been moved even higher and we've been in the Miller lite plaza. So. Almost every week we've we've gotten further away from the field of the players, and then once the game begins, we're actually in the press box as normal. But there's far more spacing than we've seen anywhere else now the great thing. From experience of being in a few different places now is at Gerry world. There's no plexiglass between reporters like for instance or was it. So Fi week one when I covered the cowboys at the rams and the opening of the new stadium there there was actually plexiglass with. Every reporter than to empty spaces than another plexiglass reporter, and so there was really no way to interact. With people at all in that circumstance. So. Tell me what you saw. Dak Prescott and. How you it had to have been a strange thing in the stadium because there's not that many people there. Yeah, the stadium capacity is about ninety thousand and in every year. But this when the cowboys have led the NFL in attendance at over ninety thousand per game for this particular game, there was about twenty five, thousand people. Allowed to attend and I remember seeing Dak take off running to his left I saw him be tackled awkwardly and then I saw I'm just sit there. And that made it apparent that something was wrong with him and I initially thought it was like an Achilles tendon injury from my vantage point because Kinda holding his leg up. And one of the giants players had torn his Achilles earlier in the game and it looks similar to that. But then when when you saw the replay on TV and the cameras. Zoomed in you could see that his foot was turned. In an unnatural way, and at that point I think we all knew the inevitable it is season was over. The crowd. The amazing thing to me was. Like I said there was twenty five thousand people there and when dad was down and the way he was getting up, there was the silence was was astounding. It was like nobody was in the stadium and then when we saw him tearfully leave on the back of that car and raise his fist up. It sounded like it was a capacity crowd of ninety thousand people. Wow. Wow. It was interesting watching the reaction and then seeing the reaction come in from everywhere around the league the players giants were heartbroken Jason Garrett Semi Hug McCarthy. You know, and then in downtown Dallas, one of the buildings had all the lights off except you know a number four. And There's he's. He's a beloved figure in Dallas very much, and it's so strange to think that the one hundred, thirty fifth pick in the draft for years ago could be probably the most popular single figure in the metroplex are eight now and I have to tell you that is no small accomplishment. Because of how beloved figure the Guy He replaced his yeah Tony Romo. There was actually a very strong sentiment. UNMISTAKABLY. Strong sentiment. Against Dak Prescott. For quite a long time because people felt like. Tony Romo had been wrong in the transition know because Tony Romo injured his back in a preseason game. Dak Prescott was the fourth pick of the draft that year supposed to be a developmental player. Wasn't even supposed to get on the field, maybe not even be in uniform all year because. Tony. Romo. Was a starter killing more now the offensive coordinator he was a backup, but both of them get hurt and training camp. Out, for, extended periods of time and Dak Prescott comes in, he wins games eleven in a row the longest winning streak in Franchise History and Oh they've been playing football in Dallas for sixty years. And and he's so successful and his personality is such that he wins the Locker Room He wins the coaching staff. He wins everybody over except for Jerry Jones. and. By the time. Tony. Romo is healthy. Again, they're actually stalling Romo. Who who wants to play he went back and they know that they can't make this change unless there's a crisis, they lose a couple of games. As long as this kid is winning at Green Bay and winning Pittsburgh, they cannot change quarterbacks. So Tony Romo never gets back on the field again. So you talk about so there was a very strong backlash directed at Dak.. About the fact that he replaced the guy and you know everybody thinks that, hey, when you get hurt and sports, you don't lose your job, do an injury but guess what sometimes you your job to an injury Yeah. Drew Bledsoe. Did. Had that turn out. and. So let's talk as we sit here, forty eight hours after the injured were recording this on Tuesday night..

"And Derrick Henry was okay. Three yards a carry was great but he was there to pick up slack when they need them. And I. Love the Big Plays on Defense Tennessee. They never let Josh Allen get get comfortable at all and not only didn't they let him get comfortable Malcolm Butler had sort of. Kind of a A. You know an exercising game You know he hasn't been great dating back to the beginning of last year but he had two picks Josh Allen one off a deflection I played a very, very good game for for. Tennessee. So where do we stand now in the AFC? It's very interesting after five weeks. The two teams tied for the top in the AFC right now, Tennessee and Pittsburgh both foreign out. And then you've got Buffalo Baltimore Cleveland in Kansas City all foreign one. So you've got a fairly top heavy AFC right now but I find it. So interesting that the you know the two teams at the top Pittsburgh who I don't know how many people saw that coming and then Tennessee if you knew what they had to undergo because of covid missing two weeks I, think he have said man could I see them? Being tied for the top spot conference right now. But give credit to my grave will give credit to these players for showing up for not using an absolutely major excuse as an excuse hats off to the titans and we'll see how they do. They got a short week. Now, a very short. We gotTA GET READY.

"Interview with me wow? I think my last thing here is. In Troy talked about how honored he was to be chosen by Jimmy on podcast was great episode a certain criteria to go check out the doomsday podcast, but I like to look at time in a in a unique way and I. Don't mean to make anybody myself included older or anything, but obviously Choi chose norv turner as his present when he went the Hall of fame and I I remember vividly when nor spoke. That was back when? When the presenters would give speech there in Canton he talked about a choice past Alvin Harper in the ninety two NFC championship game, and how that was kind of this quintessential troy aikman moment, and so that was in two thousand six, so we were just as removed then in Oh six from that moment fourteen years, as we are from Troyes enshrinement here in the year two thousand twenty. What does the time go? You know what I mean. It's it's amazing how fast it goes by! And I mean I consider myself privileged to have come into this market, and had the opportunities that I did at the two newspapers and I don't think that you know without covering the cowboys and and given out prominent. They are great. Those teams were in all the personalities, and all the stories that came out as a result of those personalities and winning that I ever would have had the opportunities. My career to go into television and work at ESPN if it hadn't been. For having the platform that comes with covering the cowboys so I'm grateful for that. I acknowledged that in any part and win whatever success I've had that has been sort of the most prominent feature in the whole thing, but yeah, it's just amazing to think how long ago it was, and so I'm Gonna I'm Gonna I'm GonNa Finish this if I can with one more Jimmy store oh absolutely. The mind is nineteen or sign after replayed it after the cowboys played their first game and they thought they were better than they were because they come off this they the oilers to win the Governor's Cup or whatever it was a jerry created. As aren't of the preseason. Feeling really good about themselves going into Orleans and they lose twenty eight to nothing and I mean the game was not that close like it could have been one hundred nothing had the saints wanted to be one hundred and nothing. The offense was historically feeble. They were bitterly disappointed in and pretend of very long season ahead, and as the walking off the field to the room. There's this guy standing over the entrance to the tunnel screaming at me as Jimmy's approaching. Hey! Jimmy Jimmy up at the Guy Hey Jimmy. Page doesn't look at the guy. Hey Jimmy finally. Jimmy looks up at the guy and the says it's a little harder to win. When both teams are getting paid, isn't it? That is great. That is a great story. Hey. We really appreciate you joining us today. Let me great stuff as always and stay safe. My brother when you get on a golf course soon because as you know, I'll be off the shelf for a couple of months, but the always great stuff man, thank. Quickly and be better than ever which causes me great concern as we do our little gambling on the golf course. I hope so. I hope I. Hope you're I appreciate all the opportunities to interact with. You guys Tony All the opportunity by Golf I'm sure you're very understated about the quality of your game. You're an excellent player. and you had one of your biggest winds ever on Sunday. Oh, did.

"This is a guy who started sixty four games every game since he was drafted, even though he wasn't drafted to be a starter, whose drafted to be a developmental quarterback, circumstances caused him to start from the week one of his rookie season, and he's been there and you talk about how the characterizes, mean durability. The guys play. Play every week he has started every game all sixty four games and last year he did it. You know making two million dollars and risking everything so if he's willing to play in the NFL starting quarterback and start every week when he's only making two million dollars I think he's more than willing to do that. When it's thirty one point, five million dollars, and to RJ's question, which I guess I didn't answer in my in my final minute ago i. do think that ultimately the cowboys are GonNa have to relent and and reach a compromise and in all likelihood I think Dak will sign. A deal before the July fifteen deadline. And I think it really gets interesting around July tenth. I think July ten. That will be a long week. Needless to say. You know in terms of this story. I guess my last point on the deck. Thing is you know? I know you're not necessarily in the interest of you know placing blame or a grading things like that, but you know the demarcus Lawrence situations equalized situation. There's a lot of examples I think that people may be are frustrated or at least bewildered. How the cowboys haven't learned from that to your point about what Joe, banners, thoughts and take on this. Is You know a time after time you know the inability to forecast the market. Market, has you know bit them and I think you know when it comes to quarterback contracts. We understand that's obviously the biggest type of contract that can hand out. I, I think I mean. What are your thoughts on the cowboys, not being able to adjust to that and to understand. If we get this deal done early, whatever the deal may be whoever it is, that will end up paying a lot less in the long run. Yeah I mean I. I understand that, but in as it applies to Dak. they've been trying to do this deal for over him. Now I again. I think they hurt themselves. When they did when they rewarded Zeke Elliot and did something they swore they would not do. which is make him the highest paid running back in football position that's been greatly devalued in the NFL and your awarding a guy for not working for not honoring his deal and I think their motivation. Doing that was simple. I think it was Jason Garrett. had been put on notice that he had to win last year. He had to get to a championship game. You had to take the next step and his argument was. How can I possibly have a fair chance? Chance to achieve these expectations if I don't have my best player, and so the cowboys caved the week of the season opener to provide you know a a walking dead coach, his best player and it didn't work out, and now they put themselves in a bad position relative to their quarterback, being done but I. I don't I. Don't know I don't think it's an easy thing to do when you need cooperation from the players like okay, so now they did Jalen Smith early and they. And and who else did they did somebody else early? They allow Collins. How early and now people are criticizing because they did those guys early and they didn't take care of their quarterback well I mean you can't have it both ways. Yeah, there's not enough money in the logistics nearly. Always managed the cap in a way that's allowed them to put the best possible team on the field, and that generally they've had a lot of talent on the field I mean there aren't very many instances of the cowboys losing a player that they wanted to keep right right, Marcus, where would maybe be the best example and and there was that was somewhat financially. Financially motivated I. Don't think Jerry was a an advocate of that I think he got talked into it, and obviously it was. It was a bad move on their part but that would be one example I could think of of them losing a player over money that they at least some of them in the front office wanted to keep most notably Jerry. Adams. On Your on Your podcast doomsday along with the Matt Mosel. You guys had Troy Aikman on. The great number eight, the greatest of all time valves, cowboys. I, guess I'm a little partial to that, but a you talk to him about Jimmy Johnson I just WanNa get your thoughts on him being gone into the pro football hall of fame, and if you had of Jimmy Johnson story that I think everyone has you'd like to share. I do a lot of Jimmy Johnson. Yeah Jimmy. I think he's beyond deserving. obviously didn't coach. You know as long as many of us. You know hoped he would, but I mean he created a dynasty any. You know inherited a one in fifteen team. and was part of a a a very dysfunctional organization you know. His partner didn't turn out to be as loyal as Jimmy expected him to be in Jimmy's opinion. but what he did in Dallas cannot be overstated. He's a great judge of a players of in terms of drafting players trading for players. He was willing to do unconventional things, and he knew how to motivate players. I think as as you know. He acquired great players Of that, so I think he's beyond deserving in the one thing that struck me about what Troy. pointed out and troy. AIKMAN has been a chosen one of Jimmy's presenters. I Terry! Bradshaw is going to put the jacket on. I'm presuming that they have the the the event in in Canton is schedule, and but troy's going to be his presenter, and if you think about where that relationship was in nineteen, eighty nine there, you would have never thought in a million years at troy. AIKMAN would have anything to do with Jimmy Johnson going into the hall of fame. but obviously they were brought together. Usually successful and troy deeply honored to be to be chosen to be Jimmy's presenter and as far as Jimmy Story I think it's unfortunate by the way that he's not in the ring of honor before he's in the hall of fame, but Jerry Jones would argue well I'm in the hall of fame and I'm not in the ring of honor. But it's. A very personal thing that has prevented him for being in the in the hall of fame in the ring of honor, and he deserves to be there as well as he deserves to be. In Canton I. Don't know there's A. There's a lot of a lot of funny stories about Jimmy most of.

"You Know Kelly more. Calling plays the NFL for the first time in his in his career coaching career Dak Prescott in just his fourth season Comes with an yard of breaking Tony Romo singles asking record. That's unfathomable. I never thought he would be that kind of. Statistically proficient passer so I think he's done everything you can do, and he's one and I. Don't quite understand why people don't believe. He's a franchise quarterback. Edwin you, you look at Jack and bill. Barnwell did a big deep dive on on everything out. Espionage calm on Monday What do you think is the most fair criticism because there are a lot of absurd ones and a lot of twitter? Ones which one holds the most married to you. Well I think a you know he's obviously one a lot of games in fact since he's come into the League in two thousand sixteen, only Tom, Brady and the Patriots has won more games and Dak. Prescott has with the cowboys over the last four years so I think that the Ferris criticism of Dag if you really. Scrutinize what he's done is he hasn't won consistently against good teams and the cowboys haven't won consistently against good teams. as a part of that, and what were they one in six last year? Teams that. Had winning records, and you know if you can't beat teams that have winning records in. You're not a very good team and to me, they they've totally taken advantage of playing while they haven't totally taken advantage of another criticism that they played in a horrible division. There's. Good Teams in the division, and they're one of them and last year that could have gone eight and eight one division, and they didn't beat the right team late in the season they beat the Redskins, instead eating eagles, and so eight would have gotten them into the playoffs. Had they beaten the right teams and they failed when eight nate was the only criteria for them to make it to the playoffs so to me. That's the question about Dak is. Is Is he going to elevate his performance? As his career moves forward and be able to be good football teams. Because that's the one thing we really haven't seen yet. You have see to forty.

"They ask Bruce Arians the Tampa Bay head coach about Antonio Brown being added to the roster and he said the smart thing no. We're not interested in Antonio Brown. Not Right now he says but you know what this is where you just end it right now and you know you have enough talent. You don't need Antonio Brown and Antonio Brown is finding out what I said when this first happened with all this drama he will realize one day. The sport has passed him by. And there'll be somebody else that we're excited to watch. He was a wonderful underdog story. Wonderful story on his way to the hall of fame. But I do think there's bigger issues there with Antonio Brown and I know the players association has tried to reach out and help him and I don't know if this is a situation where he doesn't have football that he does even more harm to himself. Like Josh Gordon Josh Gordon. When he's playing football and felt like okay. There's people around him support group and then when he's not playing football. That's when bad things happen. Antonio Brown is the same way and Antonio Brown is going find out. Football has moved on without him. And that's a shame because he was as fun to watch and what a wonderful personality every time at the Super Bowl we'd have him on. I loved talking to him. His smile would light up the room. But you get caught up in some things. You get fully yourself. I think some injuries maybe some head issues have had some uh played a real strong role in how he has acted performed. Yeah Paul Dan Antonio Brown at Age. Twenty nine had made seven pro bowls or times. He was all pro and he had eight hundred and forty one catches are eight over eight hundred catch at age twenty nine he was cruising to the hall of fame and he might still be a hall of Famer. If you say who's more of a hall of Famer Antonio Brown or Julian Edelman about that one now. That's not the poll question here but if I make love and if I ask you Julian Antonio Brown more likely for the hall of fame. You'd say I'd say in Tonio Brown okay. I think both had a really good shot. Likely I think Tony Brown after police had four all pros you know probably GonNa make it and then element there seems to be in the media moved towards letting him it never made a pro bowl like he's he's been unbelievable. I've set off in that. You can't write the history of the NFL without Julia Edwin. But I don't think he's a hall of fame. J. In Indiana joins US Jay. What's on your mind today? Guys how you doing good sir. I don't o'clock on five ten getting bigger with every day. That goes by the CORENTIN. I've away myself. Just want to congratulate you guys. I was born in. Nineteen seventy seven if you look at people in the world of Sports Broadcasting in my lifetime I say probably that are still going strong U. L. Michael's Bob Costas Bob. Costas take everything too seriously. How Michael's is kind of specific and calling sports? Dan You blend the both about the both worlds. And you don't take yourself too seriously. You don't take sports too seriously but you know your stuff. It's an honor to listen. You guys both you and the Danettes deserve it Congratulations hope you hope. He doesn't get cancelled. Hope you guys win this year. Thank you Jay Thank you. I think Marvin did a great job. Screening the calls and letting Jay say they're maybe Jay should be the one who stands up on stage if we win the Sports Emmy. And just says you know congratulated. I could should have him as the guy who introduces me. When I go into the sports fame. He was briefed to the point but he said some really pointed things in very smart person. Yes he'd be pretty awesome if none of us got up there and we wanted a fan of the show. Hey Bobby Moines no jeff in Detroit. Jeff Detroit what up DOE. Hey guys out here and just want to say I love the show and about time. Thanks what up DOE. Paulie your hot poll question here comes in two thousand seven. The replay was kind of being used. Nfl replay was being used but it was not permanent and it was basically a year by year trial basis. So in two thousand seven hundred off off-field vote and the owners voted thirty to thirty teams to two teams to make video replay system permanent efficient tool in the NFL. If I take you back to two thousand seven and you either go with that vote have replaced. Nfl or remove all replay in the past thirteen years. We've had no reply in the NFL. Which would you have done in? Why but can I use? Could I be the one who says this is how we're doing rally no replay or you can go back and have pick one direction? No little bit of this little bit of that it's pick a direction. Total replay zero replay. The past thirteen years. I'd go zero replay. I think that replays done more damage. the only thing more insane than the current replay system is not having yeah. I just think that we've relied on it too. Much I think the officials don't official don't officiate in the moment. I I think it's easier to throw a flag and.

Hi Kyle Hi how you doing good? I was listening yesterday and talk hearing you talk about dynasties and I realized no one brought up the most recent one Bob Costas Kyle. It's early for you to take a shot on Friday. All right thank you kyle. Good Line shots fired earlier. Not even half hour of the show. Yeah Bob Constantine is a dynasty. I think he's got like twenty two sports emmys seriously. Yeah is the the big one though is outstanding studio host right? Yeah I'M GONNA check on about Steph. Yeah you don't need to. They're really really impressed. Other really impressive. It's I think he he was kind of in that. Meryl Streep category where he's probably he's always nominated and he's probably GONNA win. The only time you can win is when Bob is not in the category. Bob Was Michael Jordan when it came to our our category for best studio host. If it's an Olympic year you got no shot against Bob. I think Bob and they should just. I kept saying for years because I kept losing that. They should just name that award after. Bob Costas. Just say the Bob Costas Studio Host. And he goes to bully. Who has the second most wins of all time it for the second most outstanding Studio Host Sports? Emmy the second most all time has four and two guys a friend of the show. He does great work. Ernie Jones Ernie Johnson's or Nikko. Ernie Johnson is or CASA's eighteen wins. Oh that's only his eighteen invest studios. He's got many other sports emmys for things he's involved shows. Yeah but you know the big hammer like best best actor. Yeah the longest. He went without winning it with three years Bob. Alright we don't need to do this. Oh yeah they don't need to Baba's congratulations. Great career is Edward or with US Edward joining us. Ed covers the cowboys. Of course for the mothership. Hi Ed how are you? I'm well Dan how are you? I'm doing okay. The show got nominated for a sports. Emmy congratulations thank. You thank you. I eliminated from contention with this next segment. No that would be for next year. We're we're good for this year. All right. Are we getting closer to putting an end to the Dak Prescott. Willie sign a long term deal with the cowboys while from what I gather talking to people involved yesterday. My sense is that They wouldn't say that it's close necessarily but they say that it's not contentious. It'll get done. And then in all likelihood Dak at least briefly will be the highest paid player in the League. I think Dan one one thing that happened here. Real significance you know. Dax spent all of last season playing out. The final year of his rookie contract had his best statistical season and created all this leverage for himself but where he lost a little leverage was this corona virus pandemic that prompted the NFL. Cancel the off-season programs that would have ordinarily started on April. Six for the cowboys. Two weeks ahead of most others because they have a new head coach. Mike McCarthy I think that would have created a real deadline for the cowboys to get the deal done because they weren't going to start the off season without their starting quarterback and now that that's gone the only real deadline that we know of that exists at the moment is July fifteenth. That's the deadline for franchise tag players to sign multi year deal with their current teams. I think both sides hope to get done in advance of that. I'm just saying that they. They lost the pressure that ordinarily would exist with the start of their off-season program under Mike McCarthy gloomy and just a couple of weeks helped me if it's the numbers the dollar amount or the years with Dak Prescott. That was the whole down or maybe it was a combination. Yeah I I think it is a combination. My understanding is that. There's no agreement at this point on the length of the contract but I think the issue Or the value of the contract. But I do think the issue of length is very significant in that you know. Prescott newsagent taught France. Want four years so they can negotiate again soon after the. Nfl has new money from the upcoming TV. Deals and the cowboys philosophy has always been that they want longer contracts so that they can spread the signing bonus across more time and limit the players charged to the CAP. The first years like an example would have been Amari Cooper. They signed him to a five year contract last week at one hundred million dollars but his first cap numbers only twelve million. The CAP number every other year is twenty two million so that creates first year flexibility for them in other areas. And then that Prescott. He wants forty years and he can say Hey. Aaron Rodgers Jared Goff Carson wentz Russell Wilson. They all got four year extensions as quarterbacks and they had a year remaining on their contracts. I played my deal out. Why shouldn't I get the same thing that they got? I played at an incredibly. This can cost as it is the sudden retirement of Travis Fredericks. How big a hole is that going to fill in. Desert Change Dallas's draft strategy at all. You know the interesting thing. About Travis rhetoric is you know he missed the entire twenty eight team so you said with that. Autoimmune Disorder Ginbar a syndrome. And as much as we talked to him last year he never claimed that he had returned To the poor performance level that he had become his routine before that Situation developed in costume season and last year. He played Dan more snaps than any other offense. Lineman the cowboys have that is going to be a significant loss. Not only because of that. But he's he's a very intelligent guy generally in a really smart football player and he really helped make all the line calls relieving back a lot of responsibility in that regard so I think that's another motivation for the cowboys to get this deal done that. Whenever there are allowed to be Organiz workouts. They're gonNA want Dak Prescott take as many snaps as he could get from. You know three guys they have on the roster Joe Loney who took over in two thousand eighteen season which by the way without Travis Frederick debt got sacked fifty six times second most of the NFL. Last year with Travis Frederick Back The number was in the twenties And so Adam Redmond. Who's a veteran whose tickets connor McGovern played a year at Penn state as a center and they drafted him last year? He missed all of last year with a pectoral issue so they have some in house candidates. I don't think they have to spend a high draft. Pick Choir Center but yeah that's going to be a factor in this to he's a word or NFL reporter from the mothership joining us on the program. The quarterback move that you liked the most in the off season. The quarterback moved that I liked the most I got well. You GotTa Love The box. Getting Tom. Brady you know. I covered the bucks back in there wolf for years which there have been many back in nineteen ninety-one they hired Sam Weiss. They had been tested. Verdy number one overall draft pick heisman. Trophy winner never came close to realizing the expectations organization had for so you go higher Sam White who is a quarterback whisperer and his first minicamp practice. You know none of us could wait in the media to get Sam's impression of any and so we hustle out the Sam as soon as I practice ends and he says I don't know I thought he was pretty good but listening to you guys. I thought he might come out. Walk into the goal poster something So so that's the level of expectation that Tom Brady inherits with the bucks franchise as it comes to quarterbacking. I mean they get the greatest player of all time at that position. He's got an awful lot of weapons and I think it's interesting Dan that he goes into free agency the first time in his career which he very carefully set up this opportunity and made his own choice for the first time in his career and even though he's forty two years old and his coming off the worst statistical season in recent memory and by some measures of his entire career twenty or career New England he still commands twenty five million dollars a year so to me. That's as Bruce Arians and the box and the charges were involved. The raiders were interested. Those three organizations all deemed. What happened in New England as more of the responsibility of Bill Check Valley? Put a quality team around Tom. Brady then Tom Brady. Being a descending. Quarterback quarterback move. You didn't like quarterback move. I didn't like I don't know that there is one yet. I love the saints. Resigning drew brees. I like Teddy Bridgewater. going to the Carolina Panthers. I guess a quarterback move. I don't like is I don't like the with the jets did this. I'm letting robby Robby Johnson go go. Yeah very interesting go. Where do you think Camman's really hard to say? I know I think that if you look at it there have been a lot of situations recently engages. Your quarterback has switch teams and gone on to start a super bowl fact. Nine different quarterbacks have started a super bowl after signing with a different team in free and six have won the title most recently Nick Boles and Peyton manning and drew brees so take that for what it's worth but you know I think camps problem is part of it is that people teams who are interested. Can't look give him a physical and you know he's had shoulder and put injuries. He's had issues with accuracy throughout his career. He's lost eight consecutive games. And he's throwing a hundred and seventy eighth straight passes since his last touchdown and then there are the eccentricities of his personality that are not going to appeal to every coach. You know I mean. I think a lot of people think he's a really good fit for the San Diego but from my understanding and my interactions with people out there They really like tyrod Taylor. They know he's not a franchise quarterback but they think he's a perfect bridge to whoever they might acquire in that capacity potentially with the number six overall pick in the draft in a month. Yeah that's what I was. GonNa ask you about with Cam. Newton and Jameis. Winston isn't about their football abilities or is it more of their personality. That may have have team shy away. You know I don't I think with Cam. It's it's injury personality. Is You know really the fact. He hasn't performed at an elite level. Since you went to the Super Bowl was the league. Mvp in two thousand fifteen like. There's been an incredible decline in his performance level. So I think that's the concern with him. You Know Jim Winston and I think it is football. I think it's the fact that he's had all of these different coaches who have been attracted to as athletic ability and throwing ability. Who think that they can coach the turnovers out of them and all of them have failed to do so. Even a guy as respected as Bruce Arians. You know who who early in the season making excuses in blaming other players in the offense for interceptions Winston was throwing until they became so historically numerous. He could no longer do anything. But hold the quarterback responsible and decided obviously to take this unique opportunity to make a change. Its position but you know. I covered that bucks draft when they took him first. Overall opinion in the organization was he's a football In fact I remember the general manager who still there Jason Light comparing him to Andrew luck in terms of memory recall being able to explain formations and defenses. You know at the board but his decision making really has been his downfall Lee. High thirty picks five fumbles basically a hundred and twelve of the points that the bucks gave up last year. Came after Genius Winston turnovers and so to me. I think that's the biggest issue with him at in San Diego. They just had a quarterback. Turn the ball over a thousand times in Philip rivers. Why would they want Jason Winston to be his replacement the worst? Gm in the state of.

"It's time for every team in every fan a lot of people in the NFL or against this. Because of the draft prep being derailed by the Cremona virus the People Scouts. Gm's coaches even players can't do their due diligence to get ready for the draft and others might question whether it's appropriate considering the circumstances not only in our country but around the world but knowing the NFL. It's not surprising that they move forward. Because that's a headstrong league and leaving whether it's right or wrong to decide. The draft is always a lot of fun and it certainly going to be interesting and it's an event that's popularity has grown exponentially through the years unlike the playoffs and a big chunk of the regular season. The draft is a great night great couple days because all thirty two teams are in play. And it's an event that's filled with optimism and hope if they can pull it off with full respect to public safety it could be a success in a welcome reprieve for sports starved nation. I don't know what Kinda discipline the commissioner would hand out but he said that if you violate this there there will be repercussions. I want to give you the exact wording on this. He wrote in the memo. Public Discussion of issues relating to the draft serves no useful purpose and is grounds for disciplinary action. John Elway and the saints. Gm Mickey loomis publicly said. They were in favor of delaying the draft. I'm not sure where people stand on this. It feels like it's more in house with the NFL people. They're just saying they can't do their jobs. I know a couple of people have said publicly that the optics are not good. That you're doing this. I the way I view it am. I might be in the minority. I think we need some things I think we need. As long as they can still do their jobs. We need an outlet. I mean this isn't a football game. It's a drafted. They're going to do it the way they used to do it. You know you're GonNa have phone calls that are made you're not gonNA have the draft picks their NFL. You know the the people covering this are going to get creative with this. I'm I'm fine with this but I might be in the minority. There's nothing wrong with a little diversion here and if it's something that we can watch there's only so much you can watch on TV and after a while you just go. I can't watch anymore And maybe this is something that will go on. I think the numbers will be big. And it'll be a success. But Roger Goodell Roger Goodell's doing what he's supposed to do take the slings and arrows. He'll the bad guy that's what he gets paid to do. But the memo warning against public comment. I found interesting. Adam Schefter got this obtained the memo and said that he's going to The Commissioner is GONNA warn those around the League criticized the League's stance on this. I'm not sure if that's our poll question today McClellan will come up with something. Are you leaning on this mclovin? Do that well. Yeah we could do that Paul. He's got a fire pole. I have to be honest. I'm I'm actually mad that he's even asking this. I'm going to have him say okay. Yeah but we could ask are you are you okay with the NFL draft being held on April twenty third. Yes or no okay. What else do you have here? And by the way we did similar poll. Are you okay with this out of bed? Everyone said yes. So I think that'd be ninety percent yes Couple of other poll ideas William Hill Casino put out NFL VP odds with mahomes Lamar Russell Wilson and Tom Brady to top four pole. Who will be the? Nfl MVP is added mahomes runaway train. Well it's hard to repeat if you're Lamar Jackson. So yes I think Patrick mahomes would probably run away with that. Russell. Wilson is in their Brady's at eighteen. To one to Sean watching it twenty two one along with Kyle. Murray drew brees is in their Dak Prescott. They're all it Twenty five to one. I've you know when it comes to these things I always look at. What is the long shot here? And I looked at Cam Newton at one hundred to one. Let's say cam ended up as a starter somewhere. Let's say it was the chargers. Maybe ends up as a backup Jacksonville. But Cam at one hundred to one Jameis Winston one hundred to one and also Joe Borough at one hundred to one. I think if I was going to try to do something and be creative here. I'd probably go cam. Newton at one hundred to one or Aaron Rodgers at Twenty. Five to one seems like Interesting vets there as well Christian McCaffrey at thirty two one thing. And they're mostly quarterbacks. I think Christian McCaffrey is the first non quarterback on this list. Then it's Derrick Henry Saquon Barkley all in their thirty two one Baker Mayfield junior the third at forty one. That might be an interesting pick as well if I was if I was looking at. Go Rogers at twenty five to one. Baker Mayfield at forty two one and then I'd probably put a couple of dollars on Cam Newton at one hundred to one. You know that's still a big story out. There Cam has been medically cleared passed. His physical and the question is who's going to take him in. I still keep thinking it's Jacksonville. That brings him in with Gardner. Menchu Menchu's a lot of fun. It's a great story and we'd love that great story. I'm just not sold that. He is the franchise quarterback there and I wonder how many Games Jacksonville wants to win this year. The keyword wants to win because they could use Trevor Lawrence obviously in a big way. Somebody's going to be the worst team in football this year. And you almost have to go out of your way to be that bad team unless you're the redskins and you just kind of do it by habit there. But they don't need a quarterback at least not yet but they might be they might just say. Hey let's go with Lane Haskins. See how good we are. And maybe with four wins and we get Trevor Lawrence. This happened with with Josh Rosen. You bring in Cuyler Murray. That might be the situation there but somebody is going to be the worst team in football. Jameis Winston I still think Pittsburgh would be a great spot for him. I don't know of Dallas. Does anything with a backup quarterback situation but the chargers if they're sold on tyrod Taylor and taking a quarterback here also. You're going to have to move up to get these quarterbacks Justin Herbert and to talk of. I think going three four. I don't know which one goes three which one goes four unless a medicals come out onto. I think that he's GonNa go three now. I don't think Washington is giving a smokescreen right now that they're interested. Hey you never can tell you know the this is what I would be doing just like the niners did to the bears a couple of years ago with Mitchell trubisky. Hey I don't know we might be taking this guy or somebody might be coming up and then the bears you know tripped all over themselves to go up and get Mitchell trubisky. But I think that there's still a lot left to be played out here in the in the coming weeks before the NFL draft. Eight seven seven three DP show email address TPS. I feel like that would be the call music best we agree. That tennessee is a dumpster fire. I think it's like dumpster. Fire inception options dumpster fire inside of an actual burning dumpster tennessee is a dumpster fire. Tennessee may have actually just hit rock bottom. Put the potential. When someone tells me to relax it sort of does the opposite georgia loose. No it florida's no kentucky lose. No did alabama lose. They won by thirty nine arkansas. You know they'd be portland. Say auburn lose the top twenty five match up and all weeklong nicole briscoe shocking enough auburn one blues auburn l._s._u. Scored fifty five points and they had five passing touchdowns in the first staffed mississippi state they won. I believe texas aimless <hes> no they defeated texas state okay so s._e._c. west had a fairly good weak. They literally had all team that lost olmos the s._e._c. east took a little bit of a beating but georgia was fine and laurie fine in kentucky was fine was tennessee ever gonna make it get to the college. Football playoff would be factually incorrect right was not going out now. Get alabama had lost this weekend. Georgia lost had there have been some sort of catastrophic upset then it would have been the end of the s._e._c. if we're having this conversation about the pac twelve now that's a different now and maybe saying r._i._p. To the pac twelve with the s._e._c. no nicole briscoe you mean to tell me i peter burns the anchor the s._e._c. no not the only person who feels this way you you mean to tell me that the s._e._c. going six zero with their six teams that are ranked the top sixteen by fine yeah. I'm also glad you're back because i feel like there are very few people in your position who can intelligently add to this conversation because you know people inside the dallas cowboys building better than anyone else and this zeke elliott standoff with jerry jones when the report over the weekend was that talks are heating up adam schefter regarded. He expected the deal to be done by the end of the weekend well. It's monday. I am told and they're still right. I are we on this well. I do think that <hes> the cowboys based on talk saturday night with rocky arsenault who's representing zeke elliot and has him training in kabul during this holdout <hes> that there was a substantial amount of progress made in their conversations on saturday night and the cowboys fully expected did that on sunday they were going to announce that they had assigned elliot to an extension <hes> and then when they heard from rocky arsenault for the first time yesterday i he took the discussion back to where it had been previous to those <hes> most recent conversations and made some demands that they cowboys thought they were passed and so where it all stands now remains to be seen. I think it's it's interesting that they've called up running back this morning off their practice squad to give them four were <hes> as they begin the week getting ready for their season opener against the giants <hes> i think it's interesting to note that the cowboys have have a history nicole and that you know they they've demonstrated a willingness to both signed players to extensions with two years left which is the situation because in <hes> and they've shown a willingness to do that plus make that player of the highest paid player at his position and yet they can't get their <hes> in the steel with elliott because they think the todd gurley deal should not be <hes> what elliott road alley are adamantly opposed to the guarantees and teasing that deal in a way it's paid out they think it's a total aberration and they want to eliminate as much of that as possible edward joining us e._s._p._n. You said you thought the fans were kind of okay and booing andrew as he walked off to fill so disrespectful in the way that andrew had given so much of his self to this organization tation to the city <hes> and just because it got leaked out that he was retiring and that has a right to retire just like any of us as retires was well. Let me let let let me let me let me respond to your direct. You know come come at me. <hes> what i was trying to say is in that moment when you learn that this guy is walking away from the game i understand it. I don't think that they were wrong and i. I don't think that they should be excoriated for it. I think that it was a natural reaction yes. I don't think they would do that today. I don't think they would have done that yesterday but i think in the moment saturday saturday when you looking at this offensive line when you're looking at mac in the backfield when you're looking at the offensive line led by quinton nelson you looking at t. y. Hilton happened haven't funches and e brown available to him and this kid perez camp if i remember correctly that drafted out of ohio state and the kind of capabilities that he has and you're hoping beyond hope <unk> at your expectations will potentially reach wishing and it's the best chance that andrew luck has had since he's arrived in the n._f._l. In twenty twelve catching the super bowl and a week and a half before the n._f._l. Season begins you. You are now. You're going to retire. I can understand why people in that moment of bullying. I understand and i appreciate where aaron and arron rogers was coming from that bad man that he is. I love that brother. I appreciate where it was coming from we talked about it was disgusting etc etc..
"ed werder" Discussed on The Stephen A. Smith Show
"Time that he actually did it <hes> and and he was so committed to that course of action that the the colts did have a conversation with him <hes> that involved you know chris ballard the general manager jim irsay the owner of the team and the head coach frank reich in which they proposed hose well. Let's let's see if we can take push on. I r <hes> let's see if we can get this resolved over a certain space of time during the course of the season and then bring you iraq but leave ourselves that option. He just wanted nothing to do with it. He was at that point. His mind was made up that he you know he loves football anymore. The way he was having to play it <hes> what he was having to put into it <hes> the pain he was enduring every phase of his life and so he just decided that he at this point at least he was better off without it permanent so today elect to leave him be probably resuming that he'll change his mind and ultimately he'll come back. Maybe in a year two years max or is it one of those situations situation that they're resigned to the fact that he has poked with such it was such definitive nece that they don't think there's any way that is going to change his mind intellect to come back to the game of football well well they put him on reserve retired and i don't know what the terms and conditions were off the settlement that they reached in terms of the twenty four million dollars in his contract on-track but i assume <hes> there there during the process and the goshi hitting all of the colts have been very careful to protect their rights to andrew luck going forward because either you know if if he comes back they would want to be open to the possibility of having him being their quarterback or if they've somehow replaced him adequately in their own minds he would certainly have a trade value so i'm sure the colts will be involved in that if it ever comes to it but you know i talked to a person <hes> who was very close to andrew who said that at this point they're convinced that confuses as a permanent retirement that it's not gonna be brett farve type thing where you know he regrets this and misses the game and decides to come back. He's he's wired differently leaving. You know the peyton manning's breath bars and drew brees. He's he's a different guy and <hes> i'm not saying he won't change his mind. <hes> but i'm i'm answering your question and i think that was about how the colts are moving forward. I think they're moving forward believing that he's done and they'll prepare this season and in the future accordingly and if that changes the address at the time e._s._p._n.
