"The Fujifilm X100V Hands On"

"The Fujifilm x one hundred V pay. Psc Compact camera has been steadily evolving. Since I first saw at photo Kina in two thousand ten immediately after release it developed a dedicated following but there were many including myself who remained on the sidelines monitoring its evolution through five generations. Today's camera the one hundred. V is the result of ten years of development. And it's the lead topic in today's TVs photography podcast. I hope you enjoy the show. There are so many ways for me to talk about of this camera and I've really been thinking about okay. How do I approach it on? Today's show I've been working with it for a number of weeks now and I have a lot to say and probably a lot more than I can say in. Just one show a similar situation that I had with the EM one mark. Three right. But I had to pick an angle so the angle that I have decided to choose are what are the factors that have moved me from the sidelines of watching. This camera evolved since I was first introduced to it at photokina. Two thousand ten and and got to talk. Fuji Film about it. Let's move me from just watching it to actually wanting it in my possession right so I'm going to talk about some new features. Some improved features or features that have been around but now combined with the new stuff makes this a compelling camera to have already so that is going to be the angle of today's show. Now I'm also going to cover a few Complaints I have about the camera or things that I would like to be improved or added on in future additions and we know that Fuji Film. Really likes this project. We know this because of the way they have lovingly moved it from generation to generation carefully choosing the improvements that they make with each iteration. So we know that the V. is not the end of the line for this camera by any imagination. But I do think it is a camera now for many of us to at least consider for well what type of photography first of all travel great travel camera street. Photography would be the second area creative photography and I definitely think that this is one of the more creative cameras that I have shot with and recent history and then family photography a camera to have around for your family events your family life all that kind of stuff and because now thanks to its Bluetooth. Four point two. It really does. Interact very seamlessly with your smartphone. I'm using an iphone ten in my case and is beautiful. Talk more about that As I get in to the features themselves so here we are. We're talking about the X ONE HUNDRED V. That was just announced a while back and we'll start shipping. I think in about a week or so. I think it's going to be you know hitting the shelves as they say here very very thin all right. So let's see if this camera is more interesting to you if you don't already have one or if you're really excited about upgrading if you do have one okay. Let's dig into all of that. The first thing I have to start with of course is the hybrid viewfinder. Because there's really unlike anything else that I've shot with. And what does that mean? Well it means you get the best of both worlds. You've probably heard me talk about in other shows how I still like to shoot with. Dss Lars because I really like a good optical viewfinder. There's nothing like just looking through glass. Really Nice glass at the world. The X one hundred V as does previous versions of this camera gives you both and you have a little lever on the front of the camera and so you can look through the optical viewfinder which isn't just any optical viewfinder has he's really nice magical overlays that show you frame lines Show you aperture and shutter speed you know show you all sorts of information and you get the optical viewfinder experience you move the lever and then you get an electronic viewfinder now one of the upgrades. Us happened with the V. I'm just going to call it the V. Now most of the time is that now. We have a three point. Six nine million Dot Ole L. E. D. electronic viewfinder versus the two point. Three six dot million that we had in the previous ones so they've really upped their game. Now they have a refresh rate of for this electronic viewfinder of one hundred frames per second already. So you get both of these things and for people like me. Who like both? This is a real treat not having to choose okay today. I'm going to grab this camera with the optical viewfinder today. I'm going to grab this camera with electronic viewfinder. I get to have both and over the time that I've been shooting with this camera. I have used both and what I like to do. Generally speaking is I start out with the optical viewfinder just you know for framing and composing all that it's it's really so nice and then I'll switch to the electronic viewfinder Before I make my final exposure if I have time to do this and just sort of check exposure compensation color in that kind of stuff. I love having both in just one of the features of this camera that has always impressed me in has gotten even better with the V. The second thing. Oh my gosh they finally did a tilting touchscreen so right now we have a three inch one point six two million dot LCD touchscreen. That is the up and down kind. Okay so you know is really nice of for flipping upwards so that you can put the camera down to your feet or at a very low angle and look right into the viewfinder but it also tells the other way so that you can hold it over your head and shoot that way and still see the electronic viewfinder in what a lovely viewfinder it is by the way that one point six two million dots. It creates a gorgeous picture. It's a very easy to compose on it when you do want to compose out so you have not only the hybrid viewfinder that we were just talking about but you can also compose on the viewfinder itself and that's where the tilting. Lcd just comes in very handy innocent touchscreen to boot so that is a major upgrade. That is something that I know. I have been waiting for through all the ITERATIONS and when I'm out in the world which is what this cameras designed for. I need that. Lcd to tilt. They've added it. They've redesigned the twenty three millimeter. F to land as now you see a little series two. That's engraved on the edge of it and this is kind of important thing. They had not a redesigned. The lands drain all the previous iterations. It's always been a very good lands in in Fuji. Makes fantastic. Lenses has always been a very good land although it's been a little Soft on the coroner's wide open I think if you had a beef with it that would be at. This land is really terrific. As eight elements in six groups in the revised design includes two spherical elements and it really does improve the sharpness and clarity especially when shooting wide open. Which let's face it. A lot of us are shooting wide open whenever we can get away with it right additionally they added a super EBC coding to suppress Lens Flare and ghosting for greater control and Color Fidelity and the color is absolutely great with this camera. So it's a sharp lens it performs well throughout the whole range from close to infinity now and a really nice thing about it. Is that all of the current accessories from the previous models for the lands. You know the the filter adaptor ring the Lens Hood. You know all that kind of stuff. Oh Oh the the the converters to right. You have a wide angle converter. Telly convert they all work on the new lands so I really appreciate them doing that. This next one. I have not seen a whole lot a written about it but boy when you're using it At least for me. It's a big deal and they updated the Bluetooth Version of four point two now and it has real time. The camera has realtime. Gps tagging that actually works actually works so this is something that I've been teased with on other cameras. Ended has worked. Kinda spotty to say the best and what I really have wanted is a camera that when I turn on the Bluetooth and I have the settings set up the way that I want which is for it to communicate with my iphone. That's constantly monitoring where I am For better for worse right but as monitoring where I am. I want that information to go on the pictures that I'm taking with the camera and what I've had before is that sometimes it worked. Sometimes it didn't or took a long time to come on or all these sort of things.

"I'm going for some EBC the drive with Jillian barberie and John Phillips. And we continue at four zero five in the Morongo casino resort and spa studios. John Phillips here until six o'clock in the evening Gillian is gonna join us after the news at four thirty. As I mentioned before we are packing up the U-Haul and moving down the timeslots down the down the schedule all the way to six to ten o'clock in the morning. So we'll be doing morning drive starting on Monday. And we hope that you join us and invite us into your car when you're driving to work or maybe in your house when you're in the shower or waking up or a lot of people have the the alarm clocks radio goes off. So that's always a good one. So we're moving there on Monday, Jillian is going to be here later this hour and give us an update on her health situation. She of course, a yesterday was waiting for the test results her in college just had suggested that she take a test to make sure that she doesn't have. The cancer hadn't spread to her bones. And so she's supposed to get that result sometime today. So maybe she'll give us an update on that. And we'll talk about the show that's gonna start on Monday morning at six AM. But right now, it is a pleasure to welcome to the program writer and stand up comic who you can follow on Twitter at Stephen cruiser, Stephen cruiser cruiser. How are you? Fine. Thank you happy new year. And I'm really looking forward for the first time you need me on at nine AM. I didn't stay up that late anymore cruiser. God, I live a weird life. Now, I've been staying up to like seven in the morning, and I still get up four hours later workout. So. Right. Right. I do some writing at night. Yes. I'm I'm pretty good morning writer for a nighttime guy. But my natural sleep schedule is up all money. That would kill me. No way. All right. So in the new year. You came up through the ranks in the comedy clubs in what the eighties nineties. Boom. And the comedy clubs back then had completely different rules than they do. Now. Do they not? That was a little more free for all because it was all brand new. I mean there had been comedy clubs before. But it was still, you know, a lot of them were in like old discos hotel rooms, it wasn't kind of like it is now so everybody was just kind of feeling their way along, and it was a little more wide open. And you felt free to go ahead and push the limits you could do jokes about gender about sex about race pretty much anything you wanted to do. Right. Yeah. We were it was there weren't any real restrictions on I've tried. I remember one of the first things I did when I first started doing stand up with an anti censorship benefit. And we were all just letting it loose. Then. I mean, the worst like you get those music deejays those guys who weren't allowed to cuss on the air. And you get them hosting a show. And then it was every foul thing every every other word that they could say for a night just because they felt freedom. They they got the pass. Yeah. What advice would you give a standup comic who was starting out today? You know, you got to pass to go. You can either be true to yourself or you can try to become famous by a bunch of rules that other people are going to impose on you. And the stuff that's been going on lately the little bit ridiculous. I mean, it's as I said before and I've written in the past stand up is one of the last places where they weren't trying to shut down free speech. And if they shut it down there, it's a slippery slope to everywhere that they can shut it shut it down. Because you know, if you're starting to take everything a comic says too seriously, you've got real problems in your own life that you need to self examine the comedians. Yes, we can speak for on social issues and everything, but it's still it's just comedy. You know, you're not supposed to sit there and go, well, you know, I'm not enforcing laws upon you. I'm not a politician. I'm not a member of the media trying to influence opinion. I'm a guy on stage talking about something that's bothering me. Well, one of the comics he's been very critical of this politically correct cultures. Jerry seinfeld. And I don't know if you saw this. But there is a piece that was written essentially saying that Seinfeld would is too politically incorrect to be made now, and there's a lot of quote, unquote, problematic material on the show one of the things that this writer said was problematic and the writer's name Anjelica Florio. She said that the soup Nazi episode could not be used today. Be you're not supposed to use the Nazi label to to to give to someone who's a character on a show. They also say that Jerry seinfeld's character is problematic in any number of ways, including the episode where they had the cigar store Indian in which Jerry is trying to date a woman, and he finds out that she's native American and he can't stop using terms referred her heritage like Indian giver, and the article said that that is a no, no. Again. It'd be nice if younger people understood context, first of all, which they obviously don't it would be nice if they were discerning enough it the wrapping my head around retroactively looking for things to offend. You is is difficult for me. I mean never wants is it occurred to me to start going through pop culture stuff from twenty years ago to see if anything pissed me off, you know, that just seems like it's sad sad existence. It's so stupid because you can't nothing will hold up to this. Not. I love Lucy. Not the honeymooners, not Seinfeld. Probably not even cheers in a bunch of those very successful shows. Well, no Sam Lazaro on cheer Ricky spanks Lucy in one episode. There's all kinds of you're right. It's all maybe the Dick Van Dyke show. No, they do a lot of ethnic jokes on that. Will the honeymooners was all about domestic violence. That was every punch line. To the moon. Yeah. So it's really it's. But it's just it's going to me that their that anybody does that anybody. What do I need to write about today? I can be mad at something that happened for born. And I just, you know, stand up not gonna survive in that environment. But luckily, I don't think everybody's like that out there. So no. Case set. I finally got to run the listening to that. Because I only read about it before, you know, about the parkland reading about stand up. Yeah. And reading about standup, I kind of like having your mother describes sex to you. It's just awful. But I listened to it. Have you heard it yet? I haven't heard the audio. I've just read about it. The audience is loving it. The audience is and as I said my entire career. My only obligation when I'm on stage is to the crowd in front of me. So afterwards he gets excoriated by a bunch of other by a bunch of left-wing comics who don't like him. 'cause now he's saying the wrong things, and he's being offensive and everything and they make it seem in printing. What happened I listened to the thing? He's killing. Well, let's listen to be doing that night. Let's listen to the view because they attacked and pretty viciously and on that set or at least two comedians, joy, Behar and Whoopi Goldberg. Here's what they had to say on the view about Louis C K. The thing was I think about Louis CK can is a therapist badly. Yeah. The guy did something stupid heinous in many people's eyes. Even though we say he got permission from these girls that he whatever he asked for that is, but he's out there. Kicking. What do you call that punching down? We call on the comedy world. There's so many targets to punch up till this Trump. There's everything going on in the world. There's brexit. If you want to go there, there's a million things to go after why would you pick kids who are suffering because of gun violence took the NRA fixing an RA don't go after the victim. Although maybe he sees himself as a victim. So he identifies with the victimhood, but it's to see a comedian pity himself. Not learned from his mistakes. Somebody is brilliant as Louis C K is should know better. He needs to find out. What's funny about what he did and turn himself in and stop punching down that is my advice. So here's what so stupid about that cruiser in her world. You can only attack people that she doesn't like, but comics punch down all the time. Sometimes they go after a mundane things like cereal like Jerry Seinfeld buzz in his act, sometimes it's. Events that are playing out in the news. Sometimes it's their family members. Those your parts of of of comedians routines and have been for years. Yeah. He does some great stuff in this thing about his kids. That's pretty harsh. But it's Larry the audience is cracking up. And they can I point out. Joy Behar hasn't been on a stage in forty years. So there's. She's a talk show host. She's so far removed from stand-up. But it's just all this boils down to is that cure the things you can talk about. And you if you can't be generic like the rest of us did just Trump jokes. All the time. You're bad, man. Bad Batman, you're another calling him a right winger and everything because he, you know, he dared talk about what he was talking about with the parkland kids was like why should I listen to a high school kid? Why are they testifying before congress? What what makes them do that that experience doesn't make them smarter? There's still kids. Well, and if all they're going to do is funny way. If all comics are going to do is Trump jokes or go after the NRA, it's gonna get boring. I mean, even if you like that, even if the that particular brand of comedy also represents your politics if every comic goes up there and does the same set over and over and over again, no one's going to show up to comedy clubs. You gotta mix it up. Yeah. You know, ninety percent of my comedic colleagues Facebook feed through that right now, it's just trumping NRA stop, and they're not jokes anymore. It's just bitching. They see they see you. The thing is when you start doing the the the leftist approved politically, correct stuff. You don't have to write a joke anymore. You just have to. I mean, they all they all got on stage and said Sarah Palin is dumb for eight years. The material when they stopped writing jokes and Louis he's taken some really uncomfortable stuff. You're turned into joke and the audience is laughing, and that's the old. He's not out there to make Georgia appetite happy jut appetite didn't buy a ticket to that show that night. What do you think is going to happen? The Louis C K in the long term because he is playing various comedy clubs, and it looks like he's selling tickets, and it looks like his fans are standing by him. But he still operates in a world where you need comedy club owners to let you performed there, you need channels like HBO or or pay services like Netflix to let you put comedy specials up you need shows to book you.

"Price transparency if you can help consumers have the ability to understand which providers are going to be able to provide better quality of care from ended. If you're able to expose them to more of the cost. So they're incentivized to pick a lower cost higher quality provider that I think that can bring better market dynamics to it. And I know I strayed from your question a little bit. But I think healthcare just is not a good market in. If you bring typical market dynamics remark thinking to it is just doesn't work it. I think if we're looking for a philosophy. You're hearing from us on the side, it's that were open. We're obviously one of the things that's wonderful early stage. Venture is there's things you think you're looking for. And then there's the light of being close enough that you have the chance to meet a founder who teaches you something around how the future will work. And then there's something combinatorial, you're adding value. So why think one thing you're hearing philosophically as we're looking for how you can create appropriate competition US healthcare is actually anti. Edited. And even where it is quote unquote competitive, it's usually competing on the wrong on vectors. So where you can bring true competition, and I would just say for us. There is a clear line. There's a number of things where we think you can make money, but we think it net creates a societal a deficit of some sort. So we're only interested in competition that we think unlocks positive value. And we think there's so many opportunities that we can just ignore the ones that we look at and think why I don't want to go after any specific investments are silos. But there's a number of things where we think oh that could make money. We don't think that's a good guy. So we're looking for once for example that unlock this Roddick system, and yet somehow the level of evidence is increased with all of transparency increases cetera. So let's get into so requests for startups in maybe one wheel phrases if you guys were starting company said of companies in the in the space that could be considered within these EBC strike zone. And you had all the required skills or resources to do. So what sort of opportunities might? You guys individually would pursue be most excited about her. You don't really talented entrepreneurs who have all the quired skills. Come to you and say, hey, I'm sort of exploring ideas within within this Karadzic system, where do you point them? We'll I've been thinking a most of my thinking in this space has been on the computational biology side. So I think there's an opportunity to rethink what kind of AI I farm a company would look like and really from every part of the stack to apply computation to to improving it so everywhere from you'll.

"Oh my take on it was was to quote the endearing and cliche terrible of the frog and the scorpion because in this case very clearly the frog is abc and roseanne is the scorpion and this was her nature the entire time and abc put itself in the position of basically attempting to ride this vilely vaguely despicably tweeting pony as far as they possibly could knowing that at some point she was gonna do exactly what she did on on monday morning which was say or tuesday morning rather which was say something so untenable that the show had to be cancelled and it's kind of i guess remarkable that they made it through a full season but that has a lot to do with the fact that their standards for what was to repugnant to the abc brand were i guess pretty low and so they weren't worried about all the conspiracy mongering did fee gli racist and xenophobic statements she made on twitter and so finally she went too far on tuesday and it's it's all just kinda gross and i feel bad for the very very talented people on that show surrogate over dark admit and the grade laurie metcalf in particular who were at the mercy of someone who you know had apparently no self preservation instinct and all she had to do was to preserve herself and her show was not the lowest of below and on tuesday roseanne proof you have no interest in being that so yeah that's that's where i ended up on the whole thing is this is something abc show that's my thing is like how much of it i mean how much have you d think abc they knew what they were getting into right they knew who this woman was they do and i've said this before but what they did was they they need this into an extended cost benefit analysis the we all got to witness we're we all got to sit back and go what is it that ebc is willing to tolerate war initially over twenty million viewers a week finally at the end over ten which today's tv businesses still pretty big much was abc willing to tolerate we got to watch it and what roseanne tweeted on tuesday proved to be what they were not willing to tolerate but they were willing to tolerate a lot of gross stuff and i don't feel inclined to give them.
