Trump's Town Hall Audience Criticized for Being Too Partisan?

"Welcome back, America David drucker is the lead political correspondent for the dispatch you see him on all of the networks. Good morning, David. How are you? Good morning, you. How's it going? Good. I am struck David by it's been a week since the town hall that Donald Trump did in New Hampshire. And I'm struck by one thing in particular, which is that the audience has come in for a lot of criticism for clapping at various points along the way. Now the Republican Party is 49% for Trump. 25% for desantis and the rest is split among Mike Pence and some other folks. So the audience didn't always clap and not all of the audience clapped at certain parts, but when have you ever seen a partisan audience criticize for being partisan before? Well, I don't know if we've seen it before hue. But I think that one of the reasons some people may be criticizing the audience is one, it was impossible to tell from watching on television whether it was a partial audience applause or a full audience applause. So you just hear the it's like watching a sitcom, right, where you hear the laugh track. And you don't actually know if everybody in the audience when they hold up that sign is laughing. But that's what it sounds like. I'd say the other thing, and look, this is open for debate here, but Trump was asked about the verdict in Asian Carroll case. And a number of things relating to January 6th and things like that. And Trump was his usual self, which is kind of half charming, half funny, half charismatic. A smattering of this or that. But some of the things that the audience was applauding and laughing at or so it appeared on television were when he was commenting on those things. So it's not like he said, hey, I'm going to cut your taxes, or hey, you know, the border's a mess. And then they clapped or laughed because, you know, set it in a particular way. It's because he was talking about E Jean Carroll in a particular way. It's because he was talking about what happened on January 6th in a particular way. And so I think for a lot of Republicans that do not like Trump for all the reasons that we don't need to repeat here because we already know the answers, they found the audience particularly disheartening because it tells them in their minds that we're still a minority in a party that Trump still leads. Yeah,

"I thought Jake tapper was absolutely going to break down and start crying. All of these panelists from Anderson Cooper to Jake tapper, they come on screen. They all look constipated. They don't look like they haven't been regular in weeks. Here was Jake tapper. And the falsehoods kept coming fast and furious about the January 6th insurrection about the threat of vice president Pence about pence's ability to overturn the election about COVID about the economy and more. He called the black law enforcement officer a thug. He said people here in Washington D.C. at Chinatown don't speak English. It's Caitlyn as a nasty woman because she was trying to get him to answer a question. Perhaps most chillingly, the day after, a 9 person jury of his peers in New York found him liable for sexual battery and defamation and ordered him to pay writer E Jean Carroll $5 million. He made fun of her account of her sexual assault. And many in the audience laughed. Jake, your network invited him on. Your network is going to reap the benefits of huge ratings. The ratings out yet from last night, they should be shortly. We're going to keep an eye out for that and we'll share it with you.

"The E Jean Carroll verdict should be a death blow to Trump's campaign, but won't be. By Philip Elliott. Over the years, more than two dozen women have accused ex-president Donald Trump of sexual misconduct. And the really bad ones, at that, rape, assault, groping, harassment, unwanted kissing, dressing room invasion, and handsy tendencies for starters. But on Tuesday, for the first time, a jury sided with one of those alleged victims, setting the stage for a new battlefield as the former commander in chief seeks to return to power without protections from non disclosure agreements. A federal civil jury found that Trump sexually abused E Jean Carroll in the mid 1990s, and later defamed her. An unprecedented rebuke of a White House FrontRunner that in a more logical world would reset the 2024 campaign. Disqualify the former reality show star and give president Joe Biden the author of the violence against women act, a leg up and his reelection bid. And yet, damn it, we're doing this again, aren't we? None of this may matter. Americans have never looked to Trump as an exemplar when it comes to treatment of women. We are all well aware of the time he bragged to a distant bush dynasty cousin of having grabbed women by the genitals because, in his words, when you're a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. Trump's second wife accused him of rape before recanting, and declaring him her bestie. Teen beauty pageant contestants, and former aides alike have leveled accusations that the Manhattan billionaire crossed the lines. All this time and again has been largely met with a predictable, collective of indifference, within Trump's Republican base, within his democratic opposition, within the middle of the pack independence. No, really? Democrats need to understand that there is little political advantage in the moral high ground here. Trump was found culpable, and yet Trump is going to filibuster his way through this like he has so many other bad news cycles. He participated in a prime time town hall Wednesday night with his best frenemy CNN up in New Hampshire. While anchor Caitlin Collins, one of the deserving journalistic rockets of the Trump era, pushed Trump on the jury's finding, as expected, he dismissed the judgment as rubbish. If anything, the Carol verdict may end up having a ricochet upside for Trump, whose supporters will claim victimhood, whose headquarters can claim persecution. Who's accusers can once again be used as fodder and the right wing social ecosystem. Much of how this is likely to play out is connected to what the public has grown to expect from our former president. No one has ever mistaken Trump as a gentleman. He famously judged women on their appearances. He has never apologized for objectifying women for their looks or sexual appeal. His defense against rape allegations from Carol, and this is no joke, folks, was that she wasn't hot enough for him to want to force himself upon her. And Trump's world, anyone who isn't a ten is not worth his interest, even in a department store dressing room. And that disparagement Carol found a defamation victory, but not a federal finding that Trump actually raped her. Just that he sexually assaulted her, and then disturb afterward. In New York, these things matter. When Trump was running for the nomination back in 2016, Trump and I chatted about his approach to litigation. What was worth the fight, and what was worth the day taunt. Winds were to be had. Losses were to be avoided. Ethics or higher ground were totally extraneous. It seemed transparently, as if he didn't fully understand that courts were more than a sound stage for publicity. That's why the latest verdict feels like a modicum of justice for Trump's well documented treatment of women, but won't have the sticking power in the public consciousness that the moment deserves. Dianne Feinstein is coming back to D.C.. Tucker Carlson seems to be heading to Twitter, and representative George Santos was just indicted. The federal government may be weeks away from defaulting. Taken as a whole, we are left with this most basic of thesis statements. Nothing.

Rich Baris Comments on Trump's Surprising Support Among Women

"Biggest surprise in these numbers and what's your takeaway? There's a couple. And if you and by the way, I think he felt like a point, but desantis went down. I just put up the new cross tab, so desantis was at 16.6. So roughly still 17 and Trump 59.9. But I mean, he's hovering there. 60%. Andrew, and what surprised me, there are a few. One is contrary to all of the conventional wisdom you hear from desantis supporters and others, which is very simple. This is number one, gender. Trump does better with women than he does with men. Women. Republican and independent women are fueling Trump's surge and have been. Trump is been over 60. Hold on. Yeah. Yeah, no. That does not jive with any of the narrative. The narrative is, you know, I saw Ian miles Chong on Twitter said, Trump just lost women. With this E Jean Carroll thing, right? In my opinion, at his best take, I like some of his stuff, not that particular one. Wait, hold on. What happened? What happened between Trump did not do well in 2020 or at least as well as he needed to do in 2020. What changed? What flipped women? You know, a lot of it is actually and this dovetails into another demographic that surprised me because of the margin, not that Trump's winning them. But, you know, there were some working class women that did go for Biden. That's just, you know, the same thing that I've been only it happened worse to Romney, where Barack Obama did better with white working class than polls and forecasts and exit polls. It suggests that he did, or at least initial exit polls. And what happened? There are some white women, you know, you're looking at states like Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, where, you know, we called it the seasick voter. Trump, the boat was always rocking, and Trump really needed to hold their head while they were vomiting off the side of the boat. Instead, he was like, stop whining you, weenie, you know? So, you know, so you're throwing up, get over it. You know, 'cause that's Trump. Now though it's different. I mean, it's more like a Grover Cleveland kind of situation where it is what it is. Maybe you aren't keen on the guy and you voted for him against Hillary because you didn't, you didn't like Hillary, but then Biden you thought was kind of a decent guy. The shines off Biden now. It's off Biden now.

Trump digs in on election lies, insults accuser during CNN town hall event

"Former president Trump dug in on his election lies and attacks on his accuser in a live CNN town hall. I'm Ben Thomas with a recap. Held at an early voting New Hampshire. It was a contentious back and forth. Trump continued to insist the 2020 election had been rigged, even though state and federal election officials, his own campaign and White House aides and numerous courts have rejected his allegations. He also downplayed the violence on January 6th, 2021 when his supporters stormed the U.S. capitol. The event came a day after a New York jury found the former president liable for sexually abusing a woman, columnist E Jean Carroll in 1996, asked about the case Trump claimed his poll numbers had gone up and repeated his claim to have never met her, though at least one photograph has surfaced showing them together. "Sure, that is another factor on kind of another plane, but it's a second on that. How did CNN as this story was coming out? How did CNN feel? A, this is great ratings for the town hall. This is fantastic. We are stoked. We'll have more people watching us that have in a long time. Or were they kind of disillusioned? Because they actually do want to lift up Trump. They want him to be the nominee and they think this might hurt him. And so maybe they were a little bummed because I think you say and people have a hard time grasping this. I think it's totally true. There are people on the left who are totally going to treat Trump with a certain grace, a certain tolerance, and you go, wow, what got into them? It is because they want him to be the nominee, because they think he will lose to Biden or any Democrat to which I would say be careful what you wish for. Okay, so let me, I'm not great. I should never make predictions and every time I do, I regret it, but I'm gonna make, I'm gonna make a prediction about tonight. I'm gonna make a oh, I was, by the way, my prediction was right. I knew that I knew the jury was gonna find him live. You had to put money on it and I wouldn't do it. I wanted to make an interesting because your gut was that they were gonna do I didn't have a gut. I didn't have a gut at all. I thought with this kind of time elapsed with this kind of spotty memory, it should come back in his favor, but hey, it's New York and it's now, so I wouldn't bet nothing. By the way, one other wrinkle that Susie just pointed out in Georgia, listening to us. E Jean Carroll only went forward with this until she met George Conway at a cocktail party. And that's true. That's the truth, Mark. That look it up. It came out in trial. She had of course had her legal fees paid by a big Democrat Trump hating donor and George Conway at a cocktail party who the Trump hating soon to be ex-husband of Kellyanne urged her to file a lawsuit. This is a Hollywood script kind of stuff, but anyway, let me go into why I'm a little annoyed with you, mister snarf. You had a, you had a prediction. I'd like to share. My prediction is tonight's going to be a train wreck. Tonight's going to be a debacle. I don't trust CNN. This is a setup. Trump went into this thinking, okay, I'm going to have a measure of vindication, CNN is out to get him, Mark, and to think that CNN is suddenly changing their spots and they're going to just be, I mean, this new guy, Chris lick, is on record as saying, hey, we want to let all voices be heard now on CNL. No, they don't. Right. You're totally right about that. And yet I almost need you to define your terms before you come after me about your boy. Caitlin Collins is going to be the moderator for this thing. When you say it's going to be a train wreck, do you mean they will try to make it one? And it'll be awkward and have a lot of really tense moments kind of train wreck or it will objectively be bad that people who admire him will say, wow, he shouldn't have done that because which do you mean? I think people are going to say shouldn't have done it. I believe it's going to be such a crap show and there's going to be so much bloodshed. They're going to go after him. He's going to do his best. They're not going to treat him fairly. I just have a very bad feeling about it. And we just disagree. Because here's how I think it will be tense. I think there will be moments of cringe, but ultimately I think he'll come out and say, I think that was great. You had to admit it was the greatest town all ever..

Yesterday, E Jean Carroll, I guess depending on your point of view, either prevailed or she didn't in her civil trial against Donald Trump. Her claim was he raped her. That was her accusation. New York jury said they didn't believe that he raped her. But they do believe that something happened nearly 30 years ago in a dressing room in bergdorf Goodman's department store. So they awarded her $5 million for sexual assault. But they, again, did not believe her claim of rape, which then begs the question can he sue her for defaming him falsely accusing him of rape. "He was making the announcement on Twitter yesterday. Hey, it's Tucker Carlson. You often hear people say the news is full of lies. But most of the time that's not exactly right, much of what you see on television or read The New York Times is in fact true in the literal sense. It could pass one of the media's own fact checks lawyers would be willing to sign off on it. In fact, they may have. But that doesn't make it true. It's not true. At the most basic level, the news you consume is a lie, a lie of the stealthiest and most insidious kind. Facts have been withheld on purpose, along with proportion and perspective. You are being manipulated. How does that work? Let's see. If I tell you that a man has been unjustly arrested for armed robbery that is not strictly speaking, a lie, he may have been framed at this point, there's been no trial so no one can really say. But if I don't mention the fact that the same man has been arrested for the same crime 6 times before, am I really informing you? No, I'm not. I'm misleading you. And that's what the news media are doing in every story that matters every day of the week every week of the year. What's it like to work in a system like that? After more than 30 years in the middle of it, we could tell you stories. The best you can hope for in the news business at this point is the freedom to tell the fullest truth that you can. But there are always limits. And you know that if you bump up against those limits often enough, you will be fired for it. That's not a guess. It's guaranteed. Every person who works in English language media understands that. The rule of what you can't say defines everything. It's filthy, really. And it's utterly corrupting. You can't have a free society if people aren't allowed to say what they think is true. Speech is the fundamental prerequisite for democracy.

What a grotesque, corrupt example of families grifting. And I've said it over and over again, the bidens sure seem like a family full of grifters. Will it matter? I don't know. I don't know. Are they trying to push grandpa Joe out? Did you hear him? Did you hear him this week? At the podium? Honoring people at the national medals of arts and humanities event listen to this. And here we are with today's news yesterday, of course, a jury as I predicted was going to punish Donald Trump, find him responsible for not the rape that E Jean Carroll alleged, but a sexual assault and defaming her, ordering Trump to pay 5 minutes. She ain't ever going to see that $5 million. She will never see a penny of that. Trump is going to dig his heels in, appeal, and I talked to three different legal analysts last night who said that there was so much there were so many shenanigans in this kangaroo court where the judge allowed the access Hollywood tape that had no relevance in this. The judge allowed other women to make similar accusations, which had no relevance. It didn't fall under any of the parameters of her accusations against him. And of course, her accusations included the fact that she didn't happen to remember the day, the date, the week, the month, or the year, which of course prohibited Trump from being able to present a defense. So, does it help him or does it hurt him? Common sense tells you all of this hurts him. But common sense does not seem to be on the ticket here. He just keeps soaring in the polls. Again, I'm riveted by this axios article. Trump's secret weapon. His weird weapon. Bad news actually helps him. You can take the Burj gold survey question today. Does it help him? Does it hurt him? What's the wording Derek of the birch gold survey? I mean, I don't know that it hurts him. Maybe it does. Maybe eventually it does. Death by a thousand cuts, I have no idea. "Breaking now on the Mike Gallagher show. James comer, the chairman of the House oversight committee is addressing reporters in a press conference on Capitol Hill revealing that over a $1 million flowed from a crooked Romanian businessman to the Biden family while Joe Biden was VP and while he promised to clean up corruption in Romania. Here we go. Let's take you now to Capitol Hill and James comer. Since taking the gavel in January, the committee on oversight and accountability has accelerated its investigation of the Biden family's domestic and international business practices that we began last Congress. I want to be clear. This committee is investigating President Biden and his family shady business deals that capitalize on Joe Biden's public office and risked our country's national security. This committee has a duty to ask questions and pursue the facts, no matter where they take us. Through the committee's investigation, we intend to provide transparency to the American people and reach legislative solutions. In only four months, since obtaining subpoena authority, we have made astonishing progress. Today, we'll talk about that progress. First, we want to discuss information the committee has learned since our last press conference in November. New information, investigators have uncovered regarding the transfer of money from foreign entities to the Biden family. Many of the wire payments occurred while Joe Biden was vice president. And leading the United States efforts in these countries.

"E Jean Carroll's victory shows the hashtag me too movement is far from dad. By Jill philippovich. Philippovich is a journalist and lawyer, and the author of, okay, boomer, let's talk. How my generation got left behind, and the H spot, the feminist pursuit of happiness. She writes at Jill dot substack, dot com. On Tuesday, a New York jury found former president Donald Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation of the writer E Jean Carroll, and awarded her $5 million. The case stems from an alleged rape in a bergdorf Goodman's dressing room in the mid 1990s. When Carroll says Trump followed her in and forced himself on her. Years later, when she started speaking out about the alleged attack, Trump used his enormous platform to claim it was a hoax, and a con job. Accusations Carroll said in her lawsuit, damaged her reputation, and her emotional well-being. There is much to celebrate about this verdict. The holding to account of a man who has spent much of his life skirting the law. The utter failure of Trump's victim blaming defense, a woman who presented substantial evidence being believed above a man who presented virtually none. But perhaps most heartening is what this verdict says about the continued power and relevance of the hashtag me too movement. And how fundamentally it has changed American society. For many women's rights advocates, the case between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp last year was top of mind during the Carol Trump trial. The herd dep case also included allegations of assault and claims of defamation. When a jury largely found for Depp, it was a blow to feminist progress, and felt like part of a larger backlash against the gains of the hashtag me too movement. Suddenly, the call to believe women was sounding awfully hollow. Here was a woman who told her own story and not only was she not believed, but she was legally punished for it. The herd case felt like a warning to abuse survivors. You can speak out, but you may pay an exorbitant price. The Carroll case says the opposite, that it's worth fighting back, even against a man who was once arguably the most powerful person in the world. This may not be the end of this saga. Trump can appeal he continues to assert his innocence, but the verdict against him, like the criminal conviction of Harvey Weinstein, signals that there are at least some limits to what rich and powerful men can get away with. When it comes to women, and many other aspects of his life, Trump's egotism is clear. He was famously caught on tape bragging about grabbing women's genitals because when you're a star, women let you assault them. He said, more or less the same thing during his deposition in this case, and added both revoltingly and questionably that stars have gotten away with this for the last million years. Unfortunately, or fortunately. This jury didn't seem to find the right to commit sexual abuse with impunity to be, fortunate. In fact, Trump and his legal team seemed so confident that Trump didn't bother to show up in court. It's not necessarily unusual that a defendant wouldn't testify. And it would not be surprising for Trump's lawyer to tell him not to. Trump is a loose cannon, and it's hard to see how his testimony would go well. And the burden was on Carol's team to prove their claims. But for a case this high profile and high stakes, his team presented remarkably little evidence in his defense. Besides smearing Carol, asking why she didn't scream for help and simply accusing her of lying. Carol's team by contrast put forward as much evidence as might be reasonably possible in a case stemming from a decades old event. Friends of carols who testify to contemporaneous phone calls in which Carol told them about the assault, other women who claimed Trump had similarly attacked them, establishing a pattern and an MO and Trump's own words and character. The jury was tasked with weighing the evidence on both sides, and deciding which was more convincing. It's easy to see how they decided that was Carol. This case was particularly notable because it involves a former president who was also a current presidential contender. And among the favorites to be the GOP nominee in 2024. A man whom a jury found to be liable for sexual abuse. May again sit in The White House. That's a stunning thing. It will be telling an I suspect depressing to see how many Republican politicians and conservative voters react. Typically, we would expect any challengers to a candidate found liable for sexual abuse and defamation to bring that fact up fairly aggressively. Whether Trump's opponents within the Republican Party will go that route, though. Is an outstanding question in recent years, the GOP has largely shied away from addressing what seems to be an endemic sexual assault and harassment problem, and their candidate pool. And sexual harassment and assault accusations did not derail Trump in 2016, perhaps 8 years later, Republican voters will feel differently. But that seems far from guaranteed. What does seem clear, though, is that the hashtag me too movement is far from dad, even if it is still far from achieving all of its goals. What does seem clear, though, is that the hashtag me too movement is far from dead, even if it is still far from achieving all of its goals. What social movement after all has been wholly triumphant and only a few years. That's good news for feminists, and for the country. And the verdict should also be a warning to Republicans. Trump's misogyny, the hashtag me too movement and the Supreme Court overturning roe V wade have all proven to be galvanizing forces for female voters. Now their party's leading horse has been found liable for sexual abuse by a jury of his peers. While he continues to face other legal threats. Trump is.

Trump will join the network for a two hour town hall event in New Hampshire, the forum was publicly announced last week, and is expected to be notable because it would be bringing together a network and a candidate who have long sparred with each other. We're going to be appealing, but she claimed all along that she had been raped by Donald Trump. That's what this case was all about. Well, speaking of grandpa Simpson. And old man yelling at cloud. Over on true social, there's been some comments. I have absolutely no idea who this woman is. This verdict is a disgrace, a continuation of the greatest witch hunt of all time. That was more or less right after the verdict came down. And then an hour ago. No. And then an hour later, he was still throwing ketchup at the wall and he's shouting, you know, all caps. Very unfair trial, which, you know, whatever, cry harder. Everything is very unfair. Oh, totally. It's a witch hunt. And, you know, his people put out a really, really, really long rambling statement saying that this was all like democratic district attorneys, blah, blah, blah, which I'm like, it's a civil trial. You dingus. Yes, and he also blamed Merrick Garland because obviously Joe Biden put him up to it. George Conway, something, who the hell knows? There really is a claim that E Jean Carroll talked to George Conway and therefore and again I don't really know right. This is underpants gnomes territory, right? Like there's just a missing step of like, okay, suppose that's the case, right? Suppose it's the case that E Jean Carroll hates Donald Trump politically and would like to see him not be president again. You know, I hate Donald Trump personally. I would like to see him not be president again. So do you? So did pretty much everybody listening to this show? Like, that does not change the laws of space and time and facts in the universe. It does not change American law either. And so like let's read from Roberta Kaplan, a statement that she put out. She said no one is above the law, not even a former president of the United States. We are so thrilled that the jury agreed rendering a unanimous verdict in favor of E Jean Carroll in just two and a half hours. For far too long survivors of sexual assault faced a wall of doubt and intimidation, we hope and believe today's verdict will be an important step in tearing that wall down. E Jean Carroll has never wavered in her strength courage and determination to seek justice. Donald Trump, on the other hand, failed to even show up in court. This is a victory not only for E Jean Carroll, but for democracy itself and for all survivors everywhere. Yeah, I think that's great. And you know what? That's one of the things that Mitchell epner said. And you know, I often talk about Jose pop their writing at The Daily Beast. He has a piece out right now kind of contextualizing this verdict and Carol's claims within the kind of changing landscape of the me too movement and the way that we approach sexual assault in this country, right? Like Mitchell talked about taka Pena approaching this as if it were a 1950s style prosecution and he was going to impeach Carroll by saying you didn't scream or your recollection is hazy or you didn't behave like a victim and none of it none of it worked. And Jose puglia is a piece of The Daily Beast I highly recommend today where he talks about that. The way that this is really a heuristic for the way that American women and all of us in America have different approach to sexual assault. And that's right. And Mitchell put that in the context of rules four 12 and four 15 of the federal rules of evidence, which we've discussed at length in covering this case. Right. But it's important to understand that those rules were specifically created to disrupt and end the practice of interrogating women who were witnesses in criminal trials or plaintiffs in civil cases, being interrogated at length about their sexual history on the stand. Yeah, and I know that you and Mitchell think that it would have been the same. It was always going to be this way, and it didn't, it wouldn't matter if the two female lawyers, particularly in ahaba, had to, I have to, I have to say, I think it's different. I think the prospect of E Jean Carroll, who is a slight woman and almost 80, being really bullied by taka Pena. He's just, you know, we've played some of the clips of him on the show. I wouldn't say he's erratic, but he's wildly aggressive and his yeah, he's New York meme. Right. He's a brawler in that sense. Right. And I think he's, you know, I wouldn't say he's a bad lawyer, but I think his strategy here to beat up on her in the style of Donald Trump clearly didn't work. And I do think having a man do it was disastrously bad strategy. I just don't believe it would have been in quite so. I mean, maybe the $5 million was going to be the $5 million. But having a man do it was really gross. I agree with that a 100% and I certainly think it influenced the development of the case. Let me try and sort of jump in on Mitchell's defense on that one here because I'm not attacking Mitchell. No, no, no, I know, I know you're not. But here's how I interpreted the way he said that. I interpreted that as saying, look, juries have to make a top line judgment about, do I believe this witness? And it was clear that the jury said, we believe in the Mame E Jean Carroll's testimony. And one of the things I was going to add, it was I'll add it now is I think the fact that they did not come in with a yes answer unquestioned number one. Is actually an indication of how much they trusted each and Carol is a witness, right? And so Mitchell emphasized that her testimony was kind of equivocal there. And yes, the standard for question one was just more likely than not, right? Preponderance of the evidence. But witnesses who are telling the truth. Who juries believe those people have hazy memories, right? Like part of what is a credible story is, you know, you and I are sitting down for dinner and you tell me something that happened to you 20 years ago and in the middle you'll be like, well, and then I'm not really sure about that's part of what's credible in telling a story. And so I think that the question that he answered was would have miss necklace or even Alina haba cross examine E Jean Carroll, would that have changed their overall view of her veracity and the answer that is no. Right. They made up their mind based on the totality of the evidence that was presented to them. But your point was that it unbelievably stupid thing to do in the middle of the trial. Like, absolutely. Like just, I wouldn't have done it. Yeah. And I don't think Mitchell would have done it, right? No, no, although I do take the point that the client there is Donald Trump and what Donald Trump wants is to whack her to hit her hard, right? So maybe that was a client decision and not a strategic decision. I do not know. So heard on that and I guess where I'll bring that to a close for me is there are things that the client can demand, of which you as the lawyer have, you know, either no say, but Clyde demands to testify in a criminal trial. You have to put the client on the stand, you know, over which you ought to defer, right? Because it is a matter of top line strategic judgment in the main. How you conduct your cross examination is entirely up to you as the lawyer. And I want to say that it is gross and wrong. And I think ethically wrong and should permanently stain Joe taco pina for the rest of his career to give in to your client's demands to behave in that matter, right?

Jury finds Trump liable for sexual abuse, awards accuser $5M

"A New York jury has found Donald Trump liable for sexually abusing E Jean Carroll in 1996. Carroll said the future president raped her in a Manhattan department store, which he denied. After deliberating just a few hours, the jury rejected that claim, but did find Trump liable for sexual abuse and defaming Carol and ordered him to pay her $5 million. It's a judgment that could haunt Trump as he seeks a White House return. While rejecting what he called a false accusation, Trump said on social media he was not allowed to speak or defend himself and would appeal the unconstitutional silencing no matter the outcome. Trump had actually rejected an invitation to testify and did not attend the trial. Sagar Meghani, Washington.

Jury starts deliberations in suit accusing Trump of rape

"A New York jury is deliberating in the civil case against Donald Trump accusing him of rape. E Jean Carroll went into court with a smile on her face, the judge told jurors the first question on the verdict form will be to decide whether they think there is more than a 50% chance that Trump raped Carol inside of Manhattan department stores dressing room in 1996 as she said, which Trump denies if they believe Carol, jurors can award her damages. If they answer no to rape, they can still decide on lesser forms of assault against Trump, such as forcible touching. Meanwhile, the former president who never attended the trial posted on social media that he can't speak until after it's over, but will appeal what he calls the unconstitutional silencing of me, no matter the outcome, Julie Walker, New York.

"Jury deliberations are scheduled to begin today in the civil trial in New York accusing Donald Trump of rape. Advice columnist E Jean Carroll, who says Trump raped her in a department store dressing room in 1996, left court yesterday with a smile on her face, but without commenting. How are you feeling with Carol? In closing arguments, Carol's lawyer reminded jurors of Trump's notorious comments from an access Hollywood video where he said celebrities can grab women between the legs without asking and that the former president never came to the courtroom to refute it. Trump's lawyer told jurors Carol's story is too far fetched to be believed. He said she made it up to sell a 2019 memoir where she first publicly revealed her claims and to disparage Trump for political reasons. If jurors side with Carol she can be awarded damages, Julie Walker, New York.

A friend of E Jean Carroll on Tuesday backed up the writer's account of being raped by the former president Donald Trump, testifying during a civil trial that she received a phone call about the alleged attack minutes after it occurred. Author Lisa bernbach told a jury in Manhattan federal court that she vividly remembered Carol calling her one evening in the spring of 1996 and saying Trump had just attacked her in a dressing room in the lingerie section of the bergdorf Goodman department store in New York City. Carol's civil lawsuit for battery and defamation alleges Trump raped her and then tied her reputation by claiming in an October 2022 post on his truth social platform that the former Elle magazine advice columnists case was a complete con job and a hoax and a lie. Trump has denied the allegations and said he has never met Carroll, whom he accuses of making up the story. I whispered E Jean he raped you. You should go to the police burn back testified. On Monday, Carol wrapped up her third day on the witness stand, where she recounted the alleged assault and responded to pointed cross examination by a lawyer for Trump who questioned nearly every aspect of her account. Burn back testify that Carol refused to go to the police after the alleged rape and asked her to never tell anyone about the incident. Another woman, Jessica Leeds testified on Tuesday that Trump kissed her, groped her and put his hand up her skirt on a flight in 1979. Trump's lawyers sought a mistrial on Monday accusing U.S. district judge Lewis Kaplan of bias against him in a motion Kaplan swiftly denied from the bench. 26 women have now made allegations of sexual assault against the disgraced former president. The U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy released an advisory on loneliness and isolation on Tuesday and urged people and public officials to treat the matter with the same urgency as other serious conditions, such as obesity or drug abuse, as it continues to surge, affecting about half of the people living in the U.S. Murphy who has written about his own personal experience with loneliness and feeling isolated for several years said the pandemic has brought the disruption of social cohesion to the forefront. But as the advisory points out, the issue has been ticking up since the 1970s for a myriad of reasons, including changes in social norms built environments and of course technology. The advisory sites polls from the 1970s in which 45% of Americans said they could reliably trust other Americans. That dropped to roughly 30% by 2016. Between 2003 and 2020, the time Americans spent alone increased by 24 hours a month, and time with friends in person decreased by ten hours a month. Teenagers and adults reported being online almost constantly, but across all ages had fewer Friends and in person interactions. These changes coupled with the influx of home delivery and other changes that limit personal interactions can leave people feeling disconnected, but without addressing the issue, the lack of connection contributes to increased hospital visits and dementia, but also a vicious cycle of anxiety and depression that one third of U.S. adults reported experiencing, according to the Kaiser family foundation. Mirth is advisory suggests ways that individuals, companies and public officials can start to bring people together and address the issue of loneliness. Those solutions include tracking social connection through research, making social connection and priority at work and community programs that consistently bring people together. The Joe Biden administration will temporarily send 1500 additional troops to help secure the U.S. Mexico border The Pentagon said on Tuesday, in preparation for a possible rise in illegal immigration when COVID-19 border restrictions lift later this month. The 90 day deployment of active duty troops will supplement the work of the U.S. border patrol, but will not carry out law enforcement duties Pentagon spokesperson Brigadier general pat rider said in a statement. They will conduct ground based monitoring, data entry and warehouse support to free up border agents and fill critical capability gaps rider said. The force will be in addition to an ongoing deployment of about two and a half thousand National Guard troops. The so called title 42 restrictions set to end on May 11 allow U.S. authorities to rapidly expel non Mexican migrants to Mexico without the chance to seek asylum. The 1500 troops could arrive at the U.S. Mexico border by May 10 rider said during the briefing. The Pentagon is looking at ways to replace the active duty personnel with those from the reserve force, he said. The Mexican president when asked about the troop deployment in a news conference said the U.S. is a sovereign nation and that Mexico respects its decisions. U.S. Military troops have been used to help secure the border during previous presidential administrations, including Republican George W. Bush, Democrat Barack Obama, and Donald Trump, who deployed thousands of active duty and National Guard troops. "Of the defense case for Donald Trump. Why did E Jean Carroll wait more than two decades to come forward with her rape claim against former president Trump? And she said that she was inspired by the me too movement. She said that she had no intention of ever going public with her rape claim. But she took a look at other women a wave of women coming forward after Harvey Weinstein was accused and she said that staying silent just doesn't work. The defense sees an ulterior motive. They say that each gene Carol's out for money that she included the story a made up story the defense says in order to sell a book back in 2019. And Carol was insistent both in direct testimony and on cross examination that she's not about money. It's about trying to get her life back because she said Donald Trump decimated her reputation. What have you heard in this trial that surprised you? The whole demeanor, I think, of E Jean Carroll is a little surprising. She has lived this really interesting, almost uniquely New York type life as the advice columnist for Elle magazine and all the while as she describes it living with this incredible secret that she only shared really in the later years of her life and she says that it has she's regretted it 5 times a day because she still gets hate mail. She said vicious, vile things are said about her. And yet her claim has been consistent and it has been at times compelling. I think for the jury to hear her describe what's been a playful interaction at bergdorf Goodman, the Fifth Avenue department store, where there was this chance encounter, hey, you're that advice lady. Hey, you're that real estate tycoon. Come help me pick out a gift. And they end up on the 6th floor, lingerie department, and he tosses a bodysuit that's laying out at her and says, go try this on. And she said, she tossed it back at him and said, you try it on. And she's picturing this hilarious Saturday Night Live type scene. She's a writer. She won awards for her comedy writing, and she's picturing this scene, she says, of Donald Trump putting a bodysuit on over his pants. And the mood in the room is light because it's laughable. This is the president of the United States. And the first president of the United States to ever be accused in open court of rape, because she says that scene took a very dark turn in addressing room when, according to her account, he slams the door shut, shoves her against the wall and shoves her so hard that her head bangs, and then sexually assaults her and she described in very graphic terms the pain, the physical pain, and what she says has been the lasting trauma. She said she has been unable to have a romantic life ever since. When do we expect a decision? Not for a while. Her testimony is going to continue. She is still under cross examination, her attorneys will likely redirect her at some point. There may be some recross before she's finished, and then we're going to hear from two women who Carol says she told about the alleged attack in real time two of her friends, Lisa bernbeck, a writer and Carol Martin, the former television news anchor, we're going to hear from two other women who are expected to testify that Donald Trump also sexually assaulted them as the plaintiffs try to show a pattern of behavior that he denies, and then we may hear expert testimony, and that would be common in these kinds of cases to talk about lasting trauma. The defense expert, if there is a defense case, could talk about memory and how memories change or things get remembered differently. And that wouldn't be terribly surprising. But it is not supposed to go on very, very long, and they're well could be an outcome, the end of next week, or the beginning of the following week. Okay, maybe sees her in kursky, thanks, Aaron. Thank you, sherry. The Montana House of Representatives

"There and just sort of brushed it off. I know that E Jean Carroll said she saved the dress from the alleged encounter. And they wanted to do a DNA test on it. Has that test been done? Well, actually, I think that they were doing a DNA test and had found some samples of human DNA, whether it's hair or things like that. And just wanted to try to get actually a swab of Trump cheek or something like that, the inside of his cheek to get a DNA test to compare it to. My understanding is that has not happened and that it may not happen. I believe at one point, miss Carroll's lawyer had said that she was sort of willing to drop that just to get things moving along. And frankly, I do think that she has said she believes she has such a strong case without it that she does not need it, but I do not believe that that test has ever been done. Wow, that is a surprise. There's a question of whether this suit can even go forward because he claims he made the remarks in the course of his duty as president. So tell us about D.C.'s highest court hearing that. Right, yeah, so we're waiting for a decision from the highest local court in D.C., the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, which is basically looking at this a narrow sort of employment law question before this case can move forward in federal court in New York. So there's a federal law called the west ball act that protects all government employees from civil suits related to their job. So Trump is arguing and in fact the DoJ backs his argument here that his denial of miss Jones claims in 2019 qualified as a presidential duty that he was actually just responding to reporters questions about her allegations and that was it. But he needed to maintain American faith in The White House and that denying these allegations was just part of doing that. Miss Carroll argues that mister Trump was just looking out for himself, that the things that he accused her of fabricating the attack, trying to sell a book sort of inspiring with Democrats to politically hurt him and claiming falsely that she had accused other men of similar things. All these claims, she said, that goes too far, you were defaming me. That's not part of your job. But the D.C. local court, the D.C. Court of Appeals will decide on this narrow issue of whether those statements that Trump made qualified as part of his job under local employment law. And if they rule against him, then the case will be allowed to move forward to trial in April in federal court in Manhattan. If they rule in favor of Trump, then the case essentially ends here because of that federal law. But surprise surprise, Trump has repeated his claims on truth social after he left the presidency. Yes, now that definitely a bit more problematic here for the president because miss Carroll is, I think a lot of people have heard just a few months ago, filed a new lawsuit against mister Trump, accusing him of battery essentially the rate allegation under a New York law that is temporarily lifted the statute of limitations on these historical assault claims for one year. So she's one of many women who are filing battery or rape or sexual assault lawsuits against people. Trump was one of the first people sued under that law. So we still have that civil lawsuit accusing him of battery and that lawsuit includes a new claim of defamation over that truth social statement. So even if he's able to avoid this earlier lawsuit because he was president at the time, he'll still have this other lawsuit moving forward. And if in fact, both cases move forward, miss Carroll is trying to combine them for a joint trial, so that will all be heard together. Coming up next, I'll continue this conversation with Eric Larson, and we'll talk about the Wall Street rapper who's charged in a crypto heist, getting a new tech job. This is Bloomberg. Bloomberg radio on demand and in your podcast feed. On the latest edition of the balance of power podcast Republican congressman Andy ogles on negotiating the death ceiling. We really don't have a choice. I mean, you know, we're in inflationary period. We're in a recessionary period. And make no mistake. That was because of the government and the overspending, the trillions of dollars that have been pumped into the economy. As we move forward, we know that spending is unsustainable. And what this administration is wanting is a blank check. They want to credit card with no limit. The limit is there for a reason. And we've got to work together to start cutting this White House is going to try to drag it out, but they're doing so with the future of the American people. Isn't the definition of the debt limit a limit? Isn't that the point that we'd be establishing a new limit? Well, again, the idea of accountability is lost on the administration. Again, it just adds to the inflationary pressures. It prolongs what will be a recession. And so we know we've got to cut. And look, you know, you're going to hear reports that the sky is falling, that what are we going to do that the global market is going to crumble if we don't raise the debt ceiling. That's not true. The United States is the economic engine that drives the global economy. Our currency is the global standard. The world is going to react to what we've got to do to get our fiscal House in order. And that's what we have to do is get our fiscal House in order. What we've seen historically is year after year, we're running the government on continuing resolutions on omnibus bills, right? Instead of having a 7 ten, 15 year budget that normalizes spending over a period of time. And so one of the things that we fought for, the rules package. Okay, fine. If we need to do a CR, continuing resolution. But there's an automatic 2% cut to go along with it. And if you do it again, there's another cut. So what it does it now incentivizes Congress to do its job, which is to put forth a budget to the American people that the American people can see and we

Today, vice chair lael brainard said it will take time for the full effect of tighter financial conditions to work through different sectors. So monetary policy will need to be restrictive for some time to have confidence that inflation is moving back to target. For these reasons, we are committed to avoiding pulling back prematurely, but we also recognize that risks may become more two sided. The downside risk include the potential for financial instability and the higher probability of recession. Sarah house is senior economist at Wells Fargo, she says the American economy will be in recession around the middle of next year. Right now, you still have a lot of momentum in the labor market that pushes that timing off. That's helping support real consumer spending, but we're still dealing with very elevated inflation. We think it's going to take a while to come down. That's going to keep the pressure on real incomes. And as we learned in the GDP revisions with the personal income and spending data, we've seen households dip more deeply into that excess savings. And so I think there's less to fall back on.
