"Jake waldman scored with just 3.2 seconds remaining, giving the red wings a three two win over the hurricanes. Just a good play by copper. It's like a Gopher bro. Neither is not much time left, so he made it a really good pass and good screen it went in. The late goal cut Carolinas leading the metropolitan division to one point over the Devils, although the canes have a game in hand. Dylan Larkin and Dominic kubala also scored for the wings. Cobb started the scoring 59 seconds in and Larkin added his team high 28th goal and 15th on the power play. "And so I'm curious to see what happens this summer in terms of whether they get itchy on the trigger finger again in terms of trying to get aggressive and get there eventually or if they take a long review here and maybe more patiently waited out and potentially draft some players up top with some of those picks that can come in in a couple of years and fill that void in terms of some of the offensive skills that I think this roster is lacking right now. Yeah, I'm with you and that kind of space is not always good. It can be used, it can be used really poorly and it could really throw the handcuffs on your rebuild and your ability to stay financially flexible if you go about it the wrong way. So now I'm a 100% this is a critical time for them. I mean, they've got this piece locked down. That's important. This is a really, really good sure thing to have in your lineup. Like we talked about the utility of it. That's great. But, you know, you don't want to waste this, right? I mean, this is an important window. This is an important period of time. For as good as things can go after this, you could throw a real wrench in your plans here. Like you said, they've kind of already done that a little bit. There's going to be a bit of preciseness they're going to need to have here to pull the soft correctly. Okay, here's a parting question for you. And I'm genuinely curious for your take on this. I know we just spent 45 minutes basically ranting and raving about what a special player Dylan Larkin is. And he's a team's captain. They just committed what like nearly $70 million to them. In some future aware, the red wings finally get over the hump, get back to the promised land, either not necessarily win multiple Stanley cups or at least competing and legitimately in the mix there. Is Dylan Larkin going to be the best forward on that team.

"They don't make the playoffs again since it looks like they're going to miss again for the 7th consecutive year. And that's sort of the idea that I kept coming back to, man, not that it's a wasted opportunity because he's still young and he's still in his prime and I still think there are bright days ahead for this organization and for him on it as the captain, but I'd like to see them get there sooner rather than later because I don't want to be looking back at his career, it 5, 6 years from now being like, ah, ah, what could have been because it really feels like he is the type of player that would thrive in that setting. A 100%. Yeah, I mean, that's a good point. I mean, he's been there to see all these, by the way, how long he's Brad Richards in the league. I know. Unbelievable. We said that Amos fell off my chair. And I think a level of appreciation from him, especially. In terms of what he's been through, I think for that franchise up to this point, I think that, again, I want to lean on the fact that I think you do have a good general manager up there who. Is just a malleability. That's the word I'm looking for here. The malleability of Dylan Larkin, I think Dmitry to be able to play with whoever he could put him with. At the end of the day, I keep going back to this in any mentioned earlier. I'd love to see him play with somebody that's a little bit more of a puck carrier too. Yeah. I think that's really at the end of the day what it comes down to for me is if you could lessen that burden on him, there are so many good returns with him and like I said in his ability to stalk the ICU were talking earlier about going against the grain, right?

"Is not ideal, right? Like moving forward, if you want to see the best idealized version of Dylan Larkin, I think for him to thrive, it would be kind of used more as sparingly in that way, being able to make some of his energy and make plays up the ice and have players who can actually regularly get him the puck in stride. That would be a nice luxury that unfortunately he hasn't really been afforded for much of his career to this point. And it just seems like everything he does as we transition here at the offense. He earns everything the absolute hard way, right? Like he never, if you look at the points and stuff like that, he's never going to get easy points. It seems like everything he gets is through really hard, diligent work of his own. And so that makes the fact that he's had the production he's had over the past two years. I think even more impressive to me. Yeah, I use the old adage. It's like watching somebody put their waiters on to walk through quicksand, right? It's very similar to that. Yeah, I think that. I'm going to get back to his hip check, right? Everything that he does physically is just so fast. I think he leaves. I don't know if you got this vibe, but I feel like he leaves a lot of players feeling confused about what just happened. You know, you'll be in the cycle, you'll be in the boards, you know, move from the park along the wall and then all of a sudden it's like a lightning strike. You know, boom. You get moved. You don't have the ability to make a play. You're completely dispossessed. He's off the other direction. That's just, you know, it's very tactical, right? That was probably the best word for it. But it's such a huge part of what he does. He's so strong. That's really what it comes down to is he's so strong that not only can he come in there and do that to you to be true, but if what he widens himself along the wards when he's in transition and skating with the puck and he makes himself wide and gets those arms out to protect the puck, there are really big strong defense in that come in on him in that position and try to muscle him off the pocket is bounce off him like a leaf. He is really, really difficult to handle when he can bear down and use a center of gravity well and gain some leverage on you. I mean, your best bets to try to make a play on the puck, frankly, you know, getting his way, try to run a little legal interference and help you get a stick on it because it's a very difficult player to move. Okay, should we segue here to the offensive side of things? Or do you have any other notes? Yeah. No, it's totally fine. Okay. So you look at the red wings right now, when you look at his playing environment this season, they as a team have absolutely nothing going on in terms of meaningful sources of offense around the net. And to be with you again, I'm excited for another segment of the film room. Wow, it's actually called the film quote. But you know, yeah, in the suspense. In the film room though. Yeah, it's in the film of wearing the foam room. That is where we take a player. We grind tape on them. And then we talk about what we see. And kind of just like nerd out on the intricacies of their game, just as a reminder for those keeping track at home. The catalog so far, we've got Sidney Crosby, Jason Robertson, Josh Morrissey, Timo Meyer, Mikey Anderson, Kevin fiala, quite a list of names, no William carrier yet. Still on there. He'll be on there eventually. And so yeah, that's what we're going to do. So I guess let's tee up the conversation here. Let's just know why we pick bargain because you also wrote about him and that kind of ties into this. And then what makes him sort of a worthy muse for us here today. Yeah, I think so first of all, during the chaos trade deadline and all this insanity that went into that, you know, I thought the Detroit did a really good bit of business to lock them up on that basically 69 and a half $1 million extension. For 8 years, the captain of the team, I said, you know, you pay attention to try to pay attention to Detroit peripherally a little bit. I watched Detroit games, but I said, I really want to sit down and do a little work and appreciation segment because I feel like anytime you watch him, you know, there's so many tropes and hockey Dmitry that I love. And one of them is the concept of being a 200 foot player. And I always say like, what does this mean? We see this thrown out. Like I see it get used all the time without an explanation of what that means or looks like, or what impact that player is having at all 200 feet. And I wanted to kind of explain that because Dylan Larkin's defensive returns are really good. Right? I think for a four word that's just talented and good as he is offensively. His defensive returns are really good, and it's easy, I think, to chalk that up to playing in the offensive zone a lot, right? Well, I was defensive returns are good because he's always in the offensive zone. That's not like not really the vibe that's going on in Detroit. There are the defensive zone a lot, unfortunately. So what is he doing that's making this impact? And what is he doing that in the defense of zone that's benefiting him everywhere else on the ice to meet you, which landed me as like a final point here and it's sort of the concept of him constantly being what I call the FIFA forward, which is first in first out, right? You'll see him the first guy back to help out in the defensive zone. He'll abandon, he just reads the play so well. He knows organically when to get back and assist when there's a gap when he can engage with another four to knock them off the puck, but he also understands the importance of zone entries. So, you know, you're not seeing him jump the zone or abandon his post. This is like an organic flow for him where he just ends up not only being the first guy back in the defense zone. Sometimes the deepest guy, but oftentimes the one that's either kick starting the breakout or getting the first pass on the breakout that allows him to be elite and I don't use that term lately.

"But I do, like, I'm looking at the 2023 free agents. By the way, this is subject to change because guys will sign extensions. And the popular thing always is when you're in one off season to say the next drop season is so much better. Next off season, that's the one. But I'm just looking earlier at 2023. And some of the notable centers, Ryan O'Reilly will be a free agent. Then again, I don't know what he's a little older. I don't know if that's like, that's not like a long-term fix, but it is someone that, I don't know, maybe you go after. Nathan McKinnon will not be on the free agent market and I think by then, but he is a free agent currently that off season. Dylan Larkin, Bo horvat, JT Miller is another. It's really the only notable ones that I think are worth saying. Jonathan tabes, you want tapes there, they fixed it. But I do think that, again, you look at, you look at next off season is potentially one that you can make those kind of moves with money coming off the books. And I do think you probably have to you'd like to resign David poster Mark. That would probably be probably be a good thing unless you, unless you really go like full on rebuild. And by the way, before we get to the quick hits, some of the actual bruins player news that we've got in the past couple days, you know, one thing would create cheap, you know, Sweeney mentioned how posh knocks basically going to be recruiting creature back. I think Craig is good for one more year, but I do think you do have to try to find actual long-term fixes within the next year. If you could find a way to get creature to come back for next season, perfect. Great. But after next season, I'm not sure that's like a viable option. Yeah. Maybe the same as bergeron coming back. We're again, I think at the very least it gives you a chance to be in the mix, which again. You throw shit to the wall when you get into the playoffs and who knows what happens. They got one last great run in them. That's good. And at the very least, that gives you again more time to either develop prospects. If you have bergeron creature back, you also don't have to give up a blue chip prosper to get a guy like scheifele or Dubois or anything like that. So you retain your talent, younger players come up the system, you save more commitments so that way when a lot of it gets cleared off the books next year, you can spend however you want to spend it. So yeah, at the very least, it's kind of the best of both worlds. If both those guys come back in terms of you at least have one more run where you can have the gang back together and it gives you just more time to maybe not delay the inevitable. It gives you more time to reassess what the next step is because certainly those decisions have to be made. You just keep delaying the inevitable. It's like Wiley, it's like wile E coyote when he runs off the cliff. And he keeps on running out in a straight line. He doesn't realize until he looks down that he falls. That's what the brooms are doing. Just run straight off, keep on chugging across until they get to like 2024 and see what happens. Yes..

Or you find some of those guys. You know, later in the draft that put that team together and One of the things that jumped out to me and I told during this 1000 times is the day that you had your press conference April 19th 2019. You didn't blow any smoke? You told people guys This is a process. It's going to take some time. But we want to get this franchise back to where we were accustomed to. And back where you guys were. Two years later. Ha. How's that? Progress Been Steve? By your estimation, Are you where you think you would be? How would you describe what it is two years into that rebuild? Well, um, you know, I didn't. I didn't put a lot into you know if you project your team at the start of the year where you think you know what your expectations are you work with your coach is, uh, you know, what are we trying to accomplish? What are our goals for the season? Two years into my 10 year, I guess as the general manager I look at what am I trying to do? I'm trying to, uh, you know, get as much young talent as we possibly can. That's and whether it's in, you know the form of draft picks or for the future or kids. We've already drafted, signing college free agents, whatever it is trying to get as much Young talent as we can been through what two drafts with the Red Wings. Now we've got a lot of picks in the upcoming draft. A lot of picks in the next draft. So, uh, I guess the plan is is trying to acquire as much young talents we can. I'm sticking to that. And, uh, we're looking to you to improve our team each year. Um, because I think it's important to for your young players. Whether it's Dylan Larkin or Phillips, Adina or possibly more insider next year. You want to surround them with Character veterans with with some players that helped them grow in developed at the NHL level. So where I'm not sure where I expected us to be in year two. It's not like I sit here and go. Okay. You know, last year I planned on having 40 points this year. I wanted to have us 50 points finished 7th 6th or whatnot. It's not as simple as that. I'm just Sticking to a process of trying to get as much young talent as we can run a good development program. Uh, all from from the From the moment they're drafted or signed through the the American Hockey League until they get to the NHL and and along the way, we hope we get some pleasant surprises and players. We didn't expect to be as good as they were, and that would expedite the process. So I guess, um I'm pleased with the season that we had. I see progress and a lot of our younger players. Um, you know, I expect I expect us to continue to get better our young players to continue to get better in in the add to the prospects that are in our system. Hey, Stevie.
