"Of Ann duri Sachs. Who lived in Salt Lake City, Utah, was a mom, had four kids, and all of a sudden was reported that her newborn child under her name tested positive for illegal drugs, which is a problem for that mom. And she's like, hey, listen, I got four kids, but I don't have a newborn, and I certainly don't have a newborn that tested positive for drugs. Myth no less. So not only was the newborn tested positive for meth, the newborn had been abandoned by the mother who had also split with a $10,000 medical bill. A dicks or baby to meth, abandons the baby, doesn't pay a $10,000 bill. So of course the hospital's like, you're a crook and we're not going to listen to anything. You said the woman's like, no, I swear to God, it was not me. And finally turned out that drug addicted woman had broken into and Dory Sachs car. Got her ID, which is a lesson, never leave your license in your car. That's just a bad idea all around. True. Got her medical records and then went and gave birth as and Dory sacks. And ultimately, apparently, amended and medical history. With this information that may or may not have been purged. Yeah, so who knows what this impostor reported about their medical history, but Sachs can't find out because there are laws privacy laws that prevent the records from being shown, even to her. So basically, she has she has to always sort of be on the lookout for this. She has, in real life, a clotting disorder in her blood, and if she's given the wrong blood type, she could die. So she doesn't really even know what's in there for what kind of blood type she has under medical records. So now Andrea Sachs has to be just really careful and I guess proactive anytime she goes to the hospital or doctor. Yeah. The whole thing's called medical identity theft. This happened and I think 2010 ish and it was like a super scary 2010 thing to happen. But apparently it was happening at the time fairly frequently. Enough that they interviewed a couple of other people and they were like, man, if this happens to you, you are on your own because not only is the hospital helping you, they basically billing investigators to find out what's going on and they interviewed and Dory sex is like children to find out head mommy been pregnant recently. They would not believe her. They did not take her word for it. And it wasn't until she took a DNA test to prove this is not my child. Exactly. I wonder if you could demand that first rather than putting your family through all that, you know? I think so. You just show up with a ziploc bag of blood at the investigator's office and be like, test this, you just plunk it down on the desk in front of them. For just spit at them and say, collect this. Oh boy, check that turn dark. Pretty fast, but I liked it. Well, that whole story was dark. It's very just heartbreaking situation all the way around. I've got a little positive spin for you then. Oh, okay. At the end of the article I read this is a different article, apparently the mother, the actual biological mom, who had debated her kid, got let out of jail because she played guilty to some other stuff and did some time in dinnertime. But ando Sachs was interviewed when asked how she felt about it. And she said, if the use of my ideas would allow that baby a chance to survive, then it's worth it to me. Wow. I thought you were going to say that biological mom turned her life around and reclaimed the baby. No. Don't be naive. Oh, that's a good one. How about this? The number 5 or we skipped one, so number four, 6, 6. How can we be this bad at this? I don't know. This many years. In 2003, the cops in Britain said we would very much like to arrest you, Peter Hampton, and that's how we do things over here for cops. Because we think you've murdered someone. We're not going to pull a gun on you. But we're just going to ask you very kindly to come with us. We think you murdered a woman in Italy. Last year, in 2002, you matched the description of the person, and you're coming with me, but this bartender was like, I never been to Italy. And they're like, you sound like you have been. As a matter of fact, do you sound like you're from Italy, friend? He said, but it's not a true. So this bartender, what was his name? Peter Hampton, I believe. Hampton. He was like, do you guys have never been to Italy? I certainly wasn't there when this murder happened. They said, okay, not only do you look just like the description of the guy that we're looking for, we're going to take your blood and, oh yeah, you're a match, my friend. You're a match to this. I guess the evidence that had been found on the scene. And Peter Hampton was suddenly in a lot of trouble, despite the fact that it was not him. And this is where we were just kind of like the beginnings of the true dystopian mistaken identity stuff. Yeah, this one, I mean, I understand it in a way, but here's how it works. If you are using DNA databases to match someone, it is going to compare sub sites on the strand that are called locus or together they're called Loki. And that's just like, I've seen it described as showing the genes neighborhood. It's the physical location of the genome, a chromosome. And depending on where you are and what lab you are and where you are in the world, you might use a different amount of these Loki as identifiers in the states. I think the FBI uses 13 in the UK. It is ten, and apparently you can make mistakes. I thought DNA was the gold standard. And reading this, it seems like if you're just looking at as low as 6 Loki for a match, then that's a can be a real problem. It certainly can. I think they thought before that 9 gave you a one in a 113 billion chance of a false positive. But apparently people looked into it and they're like, where did you get that evidence FBI? And they were like, we don't have to tell you, be quiet. So no one's entirely certain what the actual chance is. But the basis you said DNA was the gold standard, it totally is for forensics, and the chances are really, really small, that there would be a false match using standard search procedures. Because they're looking at, I think you said 13, I believe they've upped it to ten America. They've opted to 20. There's 20 sites that they say, these Loki are going to be the ones that we check. And you can have a minimum. If you arrest somebody and you take their blood, you work up a DNA profile of that person. You have to have at least a minimum of those 20 covered. Preferably up to 20 for your for your profile. And then the more you have and the more you match the 20 loci, the less of a chance you have of a false positive. But it can happen. And I think the point of the people who are saying like we need to talk about this that there can be false positives is because if you are on a jury, especially if you watch a lot of CSI or Law & Order, you're like, they got DNA evidence. It's over for you, pal. And the idea that it could be wrong is just out the window and they're like, we need to train the public and juries better than this because they think it's, again, unassailable. Right, but the idea is you can always get way more granular with your DNA. And really find out the truth, though, right? Well, that's how Peter Hampton finally got off that bartender that kicked this whole thing off. He did a further DNA profile of him and they're like, oh, okay, it's not you. Because the chances of somebody having those same mutations, they look at short tandem repeating, snippets, which are non protein coding sequences, which means it doesn't matter if they mutate a lot. So they mutate a lot. So the chances of you having the same mutation in all 20 of those is vanishingly small, and even in all 8 of them is pretty small enough that it is still the gold standard. It's just if you get caught and you have money for a good lawyer, you can be like, you need to do a better profile and then they'll find that it's not actually you. Right. And of course, I use pica loo, that's not the official language they use. For looking at DNA, that's Peekaboo. Right. I use the slang. Okay. All right, I think we do one more than we take our other break. How about that? Oh, okay. I'm still having a lot of fun here, chuck. Okay, good. All right, so I guess we're on either number four or number three, and number 5, or number 17. There was an interesting case of mistaken identity in which turned out to be a sibling in Alaska, police had a sexual assault case. And it was they had a semen sample. They had usable DNA. They had a DNA match. This guy was already in the system so they thought like, all right, this is an open and shut case, except one problem. This guy is was in jail already when the crime was committed. So what are we going to do? Yeah, this one was incredibly fascinating. I think this Alaskan DNA analyst or forensic analyst, like went around the country giving talks on this case and really opened people's eyes because it turned out that the guy who was in prison whose DNA matched the semen on the crime scene, I guess. Had gotten a bone marrow transplant from his brother. And because of that, he was carrying around his brother's DNA in his blood because when you get a bone marrow transplant, you're getting like a red blood cell stem cell transplant and those things turn into red blood cells and they test your blood, so whatever DNA your blood has is what they come back with on the DNA profile. I wonder if the other brother immediately was like, you're looking for my brother. It sounds like the other brother was not a good guy, obviously. I mean, clearly if he committed sexual assault. But if he was already in jail for something else, then it sounds like good brother bad brother. Scenario. They were both sexual assaulters. The one was already in jail for it, the one who actually did it had not been caught yet. They thought that the guy who was in jail already was the outside one and it turned out knows a whole family of sexual assistance makes a lot more sense now. Yeah. I get it. Okay. All right. I mean, it made sense before, but this makes such glorious sense. I feel like the blinders are off. So this really is like enough of a thing that forensic analysts from Alaska who discovered this because at first they were like, well, the lab obviously made this up and they looked in there. They were like, what is going on here? They started looking into it more and they're like, this could be a thing actually. We need to let the law enforcement know like there's a thing that happens when you get a bone marrow transplant, your DNA changes. And there was a guy named Chris long on I wrote about an IFL science article. And they tested him four years after he'd gotten a transplant from a donor in Germany who he never met. I don't believe. And his DNA in different parts of his body were entirely the donors, including get this chuck. His semen had nothing but his donor's DNA. So if he fathered a child, whose kid would that be, because the kid would have the same DNA as the donor, not him, his dad. It would be his kid still. Legally, it would be his kid, but biologically, wouldn't it be the German donors child? I don't know. I think there's an old saying about that like whoever smelt it dealt it, but I can't quite work it out. There's a couple of rhymes I'm trying not to say out loud right now. Two bad brothers, man. That was sitting there right in front of my face. Yeah. Well, so they both went to jail, right? Yeah, I believe the Alaska forensic analyst got them. Nabbed their person. Sweet. Is it time for that break now

"The long game how to be a long term thinker in short term world dorey clark is in executive education professor at duke university school of business. The new york times described her as an expert at self reinvention and helping others with changes in their lives. She started as a journalist so she's no stranger herself to self reinvention duri clark. Welcome to design matters debbie. I'm so glad to be here. Thank you thank you. Dory dory is a true that during the pandemic you started taking weekly ping pong lessons. I most definitely did yes. I was taking these long. These incredibly long. Like four hour walks around manhattan because all my friends who fled the city and all the gyms were closed. And i was just wondering around in a new neighborhood one day and i came across this oasis and it was a two story ping pong studio and they had signs. They were open twenty four hours and they had lessons and i thought okay. It's god speaking to me. I must do this. Did you get any good. I actually decent right now. I'm not ready to be a world champion. They actually do employ literal olympic champions as coaches. But i would. I would say i have. I have transcended basement player level status. Nice at lake to see that. I understand that you grew up. In a self-described little golf resort called pinehurst north carolina population. Three thousand. so did you grow up playing golf. A you a. Us sort of natural athlete. That only comes out. When i'm playing. No i really hated my hometown. I thought it was kind of boring and stultifying and so my adolescent rebellion was refusing to play golf. Is it true that when you were a little girl you wanted to be a spy. Y- you've you've. You've been digging. It's it's all true. I i was really into james bond when i was growing up which was saying something because that was the roger more years but i thought it was sophisticated and so wonderful so i did. I did want to be a and in fact you know my my adult catharsis version of that is writing a lesbian spy musical. So that's that's one of my covert projects as well as the ping pong so fun home. Sort of needs daniel craig's james bond. Something like that. Absolutely you mentioned as you were growing up. You felt incredibly frustrated. Am i know that you've felt somewhat curtailed by the opportunities around you and at some point you wanted to be a lawyer. Then you considered becoming gay activists. But i also understand. You're in a band. And i believe it was called the unlimited powers. So let's talk about your early days as a rock and roller. What instrument did you play. Where did you play. Give us all the details. Yes the unlimited powers was a very short lived band It was in. The title was inspired by. I guess appropriately by anthony. Robbins is book unlimited power. So i was a little bit of a self development geek even as a teenager and i played the guitar kind of badly. I managed to take a couple of years of lessons as a teenager mostly so that i could sound decently impressive strumming the indigo girls Upriver fire ed. Yeah we we just. We cut our singles by singing into a cassette recorders about it. I'm going to spare. Our listeners are doing our own. Rendition of indigo girls duet. But i think we have to set up a date to do that absolutely. Did you become a tony robbins. Fan or go to any of his seminars or so. The reason that we named the band that is that the the girl who was in it with me her mother. actually. I was over at her house. My friend rosalind. And i was over at her house and her mom was reading. Tony robbins as i guess. Most most people were back in that moment. In time. I saw it lying around the house. And i picked it up and i was flipping through it and she. The mother was just obviously very excited by this development. Because i think rosalind was not a whit interested and she will. Do you like that book. And i was like i. I don't i don't know what is it. And so she explained to me The basic outline of what it was and she said if you read this. When you're thirteen you will be invincible. I thought that was actually a pretty pretty good sales pitch. So she said. Do you want to take it home and borrow it. I was like all right. so yes. They got me on the anthony robbins bandwagon. Well it's quite. I don't know if it's a coincidence. Then but at fourteen so one year later you went to the mary baldwin college program for the exceptionally gifted. So you went to college at fourteen one year after reading. Anthony robbins unlimited power. I think he needs to know that. I think that's where the neuro linguistic programming. Let's let's credit where credit is due so you attended mary baldwin for two years then transferred to smith college where you graduated. Phi beta kappa. Where you major in philosophy. I love that you major in philosophy two years later at a mere twenty years old. You received a master's degree from harvard. Divinity school so you had a masters degree at twenty i did. I did in theology. I'm not sure how far that gets. Ya yes. I did so why theology. I was interested in school for a couple of reasons. There's an there's like a little act not an acronym but a nickname school. Yes so the. The first reason was that as i was studying philosophy what i was really interested in was understanding. Life was was understanding. What motivates people. And what drives them and interestingly..

The high numbers are fortunately, prompting more people to get tested for the virus. But Skagit County Health says it can no longer meet the demand at their main testing site. As of yesterday, the department is restricting use of its fairground site to only those who live and work in scheduled county for vaccines. And then you can only come in for testing if you think you've been exposed or are experiencing covid symptoms. The site reopened at the end of August because of the current fifth wave of Covid infections. And now spokesperson Danica Sessions tells the Skagit Valley Harold, It really comes down to supply and capacity. We just don't have adequate testing supplies or staff right now to continue to offer testing to everyone at this point, those not experiencing symptoms but still wanting to know their covid status are encouraged to purchase self test from local drugstores. "It comes to evaluating the use of covid vaccinations for Children. Cautioning parents not to seek out vaccinations ahead of FDA approval, saying in part, Children are not small adults, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children's Hospital Association. More than a quarter of a million new Covid 19 cases were reported Justin Children two weeks ago, the highest number of weekly pediatric cases on record since the pandemic began. The Department of Health and Human Services says more than 2500 Children are currently hospitalized with Covid 19 nationwide pediatrician. Dr Brian Corn right in Virginia, says he's never seen anything like this. It's never been this crazy. Never been this busy. It's exhausting all of us. And our biggest concern, of course, is that sick kids aren't getting the care they need. Steve Lance and his wife are vaccinated. He says his family of four caught Covid after his kids recently returned to school where he suspects his third grade son picked up the virus despite the school making masks mandatory, which is that first week of lots of contact with other kids, and it's one of those things. You send your child to school there in a classroom, but they're not just in contact with everyone in that classroom. They're in contact. With everyone that those classmates have come in contact with, According to the CDC. New data shows that unvaccinated people are 10 times more likely to be hospitalized and 11 times more likely to die from the virus than those who are fully vaccinated. Now, with President Biden doubling down on vaccines mandating that businesses with more than 100 employees either require the shots or offer weekly covid testing. The bottom line. We're going to protect vaccinated workers, some unvaccinated coworkers, at least 19 Republican governors are condemning the move. This is an unprecedented assumption of federal mandate for itty that really disrupts and divides the country at this hospital in upstate New York, so many employees have resigned over the state's mandatory vaccine policy. We're at the worst peak of serious cases of Covid 19 since the pandemic began. The front line nurses and doctors say it doesn't have to be this way. Almost Keith Aldridge, reports from Tacoma's Saint Joseph Hospital intensive care nurse says that it's really tough on him and all the other frontline staff members to see Covid 19 patients continue to come in. But the very real possibility of dying. A very agonizing death of main concern for them right now is even though overall cases are trending downward. Hospitalizations are still very high and deaths are on the rise again. Association says more patients are on the ventilators this week 260 people versus 2 51 from the previous week. Let's say 95% of Covid 19 patients needing hospital care are those who are unvaccinated. That's heartbreaking for Saint Joseph, ICU nurse Zach Duris, who says it's tragic, watching something that he believes is so preventable. It's tough, You know, I think as the bedside nurse Your first reaction wants to be empathy. Um, because they're sick at someone who's struggling. It's someone who is not at their best. "Us to come up with a cross platform solution. That can target both windows. And the web and the mac at the same time and this is where i am honestly unable to draw the line because i thought i was able to draw the line about these years ago like years ago younger me would have said oh no electron apps no way a member gonna be using that but then i realized you know i understand why companies do this. I mean right now. My main tech senator obsidian it's built with electron and there's a very good reason for that. We check in getting to later but the thing is i don't know if i want to draw the line because i you know in the yes electron can have a bunch of weird corks to it right and an performance can be bad but there are also you know like good electron apps and bad the electron apps but the thing is that also advantages to this approach. Which is when. I was playing around with my samsung galaxy. Fold for example. I was able to install obsidian no problem and everything sinks still right and it's the scenes duris another joyce and you know and you know i other apps and discord. Everything looks the same. Everything is consistent. There is a certain degree of freedom that comes with apps that are built with these technologies. And i understand if i part of our of our listeners or nova readers or more strict in terms of the kind of experiences that they allow on their devices. And i totally understand that. I think it's totally understandable and for many apps. I'm also like that but i think it's. It's it's important to understand why this phenomenon is happening and that is for a lot of companies. It doesn't make financial sense to commit to build a native mac. Version of an obligation debt may just easily exist as a web app or as a hybrid app built with electron or similar technologies. Yeah i think you know to add to that point. I would say that. I think part of this is also driven by the rise of mobile. Because it's far easier for a company to build an electronic app that works across multiple desktop operating systems than it is to do that on mobile devices now electra. Obsidian for instance on ios ipad os is not native. you i it does have elements of of Of electron in there. However there is still more that has to be done to bring an app to mobile. Even if it's got those underlying web technologies built into it. So i feel as though that's driving part of this because mobile is so big it's worth it to these companies to do something oftentimes either totally custom for that platform using native mobile. Ui where it wouldn't be for the desktop or the desktop just been kinda pushed into the corner to a degree where it's just not. As important a part of their businesses. It may be was five or ten years ago. This.

"We don't i don't think as recording this. We don't know who it is. We know that three players are out during jalen. Brunson josh richardson. One of them is positive. And then today we just found out that maxie is positive so there's maxi plus one other player. Those two players will have to be out to fourteen days which is five to eight games and then the other two that are just quarantining for seven days. that's oh. I thought it was four days. I think it's seven. Yeah so that's two games. They'll miss two more to your games. Yeah that they'll miss. And then yeah maxine and the other one will be out for another four five six to eight gay. So you're looking at a starting lineup. Next game of luca hardaway. I think a one takes over. Josh green. Because i can imagine was surprisingly good. Yeah and then James johnson probably starting at the four for for maxine. And then cauley stein at the five with your bench. Trey burke in powell and josh green and hopefully nobody else has to play. Yeah so i mean it's a. It's going to be tough. It's gonna be rough. Yeah i wonder look. There's some and i don't know if anybody has any inside. Knowledge of porzingis is coming back. I have well. I like how you just brushed that off. Like i'm trying to make a point. It's not about you. I think it's skin way that mentioned that. He thinks they might bring him back in the hornets game because they didn't want to bring them back in the pelicans and have to with stephen adams elbowing him across. Even adams is out. Oh he is okay migraine. I was like just good. So i can be serious. I'm thinking if i'm the mavericks if your intention is to bring about against the hornets considering the situation can you bring them back. One game early. Yeah just out of necessity. I'm not asking you to play him. Forty minutes ten to fifteen minutes just to help offset the lack of players that have and it's just one game. Is it really going to hurt. Clearly he's healthy targeted the hornets. And yeah maybe. If stephen adams is out and he's healthy ready to go why not. Yeah i mean if if that is it if it's just a one. His name was the white powell he would have been the order. Well last game. Yeah i mean if it was that just one game difference thin. Yeah just bring him back to prison back. They're going to be social and look. I'm not saying. I want to risk injury. You're putting his career in jeopardy but if it's a one game difference now quitting any raise. Yeah yeah it can't make that much of a difference if it's longer i get it But yeah it's a it's gonna be rough for the mavericks. I mean but a lot of teams are dealing with this. They actually just announced that they're postpone the game between the celtics and heat. I think the heat and somebody so that's going on anyways so hopefully they can still get some wins. Duri time per. Yeah so we'll see but that that's that's the ugly coming up for the mavericks because it is i mean. Thankfully they want against the magic they had players out to in its magic and their next two games. Aren't against the lakers and the clippers. It's the pelicans and the hornets. Yeah so of course. I already loss against the hornets. Good then chances are will be at true Will get to our game predictions at the end of the episode..

"A Republican Senator from Duri is calling on on his his alumni alumni at at Yale Yale Law Law School School to to stop stop religious religious discrimination discrimination or or lose lose federal federal funding funding with with more. more. Here's Here's USA USA radio radio networks networks temper. temper. Erg Erg Republican Republican was was re Senator Josh Holly said during an appearance on FOX and friends that he wants Yale university's funding be taken away. If the school doesn't treat religious students fairly. We've heard these kind of complaints before they don't like the radical left doesn't like the position that religious organizations take on abortion or on traditional marriage or range of other issues. All of it's really about is Yale has been looking for an opportunity to discriminate against religious organizations that provide many his free legal services to people in need and to discriminate against students faith, they're not permitted to do that under federal law. So if they want federal funding, they need to stop discriminating, Yale did put out a statement that says if an employer refuses to hire students at our Christian gay black or veterans they will not fund that position to which Holly says it sounds like Yale now has been exposed for what they're doing. And now they're trying to backtrack. But there's still a lot of trust is trust us. We'll get it. Right. So we're not going to trust anything. I want to see the details of their. Policy. I wanna see that they are treating religious students and religious organizations in the same way, they treat every other legal organization and every other student, and if he doesn't do that if they don't treat religious students fairly fish should have their federal funding strip
