"He left him in Minnesota, but I think any package has to start with two of Dylan Brooks, Desmond bane and jaren Jackson. I think you have to part ways with two of those guys. I think you tell the nets pick one of Jaron Jackson junior or Desmond baine and you get Dylan Brooks and whatever else we need to make the salaries match. And I think if you're the grizzlies, I think you do that trade. I really do, as great as jaren Jackson junior is, as much as I'm a fan of Desmond bane, shout out to Michael bean as profile about him. I think you make that trade if you're Memphis. I really do. Yeah, and I want to be clear. I mean, I really like triple J and I really like Desmond Bain. I like them both. I do not like them as much as Kevin Durant. We talked about this the last time before you went on your August sabbatical, like the rest of the NBA, where if you can get Kevin Durant for, I don't know, anything, right? No matter what that anything is, it's always going to be expensive. The answer is almost always in an every instance, yes, because he's Kevin Durant, so I understand why the grizzlies. They've got a young team. They were on the rise last year. They might not want to mess with the trajectory of their team. I understand that unplugging some of these younger guys might seem scary to them. But of course, triple J and Desmond bay and have to be on the table. And if you had to unload both of them for Kevin Durant, I would still do that because it's Kevin Durant. So I don't think, I don't think it's much of a thought experiment. I thought the tweet was sort of silly. I'm sure that that's the position that the grizzlies are taking with the nuts and whatever negotiations that they've undertaken so far. But to say that those two guys are off the table. Okay, then what are you sending, right? Get out of here. The other thing, though, I want to reverse engineer this. I think theoretically and on paper, it would be a wonderful landing spot for Kevin Durant, right? I really like the shape of the grizzlies. Obviously, ja took a massive step. "Warren. They have the young guys that they brought up Kessler Edwards and those sorts of dudes. There's depth on the roster. And if everybody could just get their heads around, we show up and we play ball together, that's a team that I think would be in the mix for maybe three or four scenes in the east. I still think the Celtics and the blocks are like a pretty clear one and two above everybody else. But if you get that team on the court for the better part of an actual season, there's no reason it shouldn't be an elite offense with at least a good enough defense depending on what Simmons can do to elevate it. And then from there on, it's like you put yourself in a short series with Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving against pretty much any defense, I guess with the exception of that Celtics defense that we just saw. You feel pretty good about your chances. So now the issue though is like, do you get to a point where is it just too much water over the dam and too many cracks for you to put it all back together? And maybe that's the case. Maybe we just reached a point where between Durant's request and all the issues that kairi's had and everything else, it's just too much to put back together. That would be a real shame because I continue to believe that if you put that team on the court, they'd be pretty damn fun to watch. Yeah, I think so too. I'm of the belief and look, we all know that Ben Simmons has his limitations. But Ben Simmons does a lot of things really well. He's an excellent rebounder and excellent defender who can switch one through 5, give people a lot of problems. He runs the break well. He's a good passer. Absent the shooting component, he's pretty good, and being on a team with KD and Kyrie, where he wouldn't have to be the one or the one a, he could be the three in terms of options. Now all of a sudden I really like Ben Simmons as a player and you let the other guys do the heavy lifting offensively and all of a sudden who knows what Brooklyn could be. I'm with you that probably the top tier of the Eastern Conference remains Boston and Milwaukee and then you've got that second tier of the sixers in the heat, but I would probably slot the nuts into that tier. If you could be guaranteed of bringing everybody together, stitching humpty dumpty back together, I'm not sure that they can actually pull that off though because in addition to all this KD stuff, you do still have the Kyrie would they potentially move him as well.

"That certainly at the very least ratchets up the pressure to get something done. I thought it was interesting, Howard, at the bottom of that story in the athletic, was just a simple paragraph that says Durant has grown close with Boston coach email DOCA in recent years. It's kind of out of nowhere in this story after you don't spend a year with Durant as assistant in Brooklyn and later with Team USA for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. I don't know if you made anything of that. I thought it was interesting because Boston is among the teams that is made an offer for Kevin Durant. Now you have a note at the bottom of the story, relaying that Kevin Durant as a good relationship with emea DOCA. That I made note of that hour. That to me wasn't a throwaway paragraph. No, probably not. There are no throwaway lines in sports media in 2022. Everything it probably means something, everything was, you know, whispered for a purpose. I mean, is that a direct line to, hey, would he really wants us to trade to the Celtics? I mean, the Celtics weren't on his reported list. They're the top of his list was supposed to be Phoenix and Miami. It has that list expanded. We haven't heard that. Maybe it's maybe that's what that's about, or maybe it's just that he would have liked to have seen eme O DOCA supplant Steve Nash in Brooklyn and it's just part of the overall grievance with the organization. Yeah, maybe. I read it as trade me to Boston. That's kind of how I read it. And look, I had one executive who's not involved in the Durant sweepstakes. Do you say to me, if the nets don't have the stomach to bring him to training camp, they should find a way to do a deal with Boston because they're not going to get a better player in a deal than jaylen Brown. Jaylen Brown all star 25 years old still improving as a player has a chance to be a multi time all star in this league. I know they want Marcus smart and whatever other pounds of flesh they want to take from the south, but boss is not Boston wasn't giving up a lot before they certainly aren't giving up a lot now, not in the wake of this report. So I think when you say things haven't changed, where I agree with you is that we're not going to see the nets turn around tomorrow and make a deal. It's just not going to happen. They're going to play this thing out into late August into early September and probably reevaluate where they are once they get to that point. But if the offers don't improve, if there isn't a pathway to get, say, Donovan Mitchell or somebody like that, bam adebayo or somebody like that. A Boston deal makes the most sense. The selfish will give you draft picks. They'll give you jaylen Brown. It's not the Anthony Davis deal that the nets are clearly hoping to get, but it might be the best deal out there for them.

"And I think the outcome would be multiple legit shots at a championship with Durant, at least two. And if you win one or you win two, it's a smashing success. If he gets hurt or declines a little bit, it's a massive failure, but it doesn't make it the wrong move. It's about the value here, right? So I'm looking at and saying, what's good value for Duran? You know, I don't care about picks, so I'm putting the pics on the table. Smart, I think everybody's giving up smart for Durant. And brown's a tough pill to swallow, but that's what gives you the edge over everybody else. So it's Brown, smart, picks, I'm doing it. If it's Brown, smart, rob, that's probably too much. I'm just looking at like hedging the value of what's going to significantly improve your championship. Chance here, because again, we kick this around last week, John. I love the season they just had. It was one of the most exciting Celtic seasons ever, and I can always take value in that. But man, the way the finals, I just watched the finals again the other day. That was tough. The way it ended, how falling short there, the uncertainty of whether or not you're going to get back, they had a really good chance saying, if you had to rant, closing game four, you're probably hanging a banner this fall. You know? Yeah, maybe and again, it's hard to say exactly how that goes. I do question again from a style perspective. You know, one of whether something you want to watch and two, whether it's something that's effective here, I think this is a team where you want to see more ball movement. I think you're less likely to get that with another ball dominant player like Kevin Durant. And so I think that affects you. And again, we have to be honest here. Malcolm Brogdon also likes to have the ball in his hands a lot, and I'm not saying he's going to be the impediment to what Kevin Durant trade, but he's a guy who dribbles a lot, takes it to the whole, creates his shots. So now you're going to start to get a lot of that. If you bring in a Durant and I don't love, I don't love the fit with him and Tatum. It's two guys that do the same thing.

The Garden Report | Boston Celtics Post Game Show from TD Garden

"So naturally, you call and you check and the conversation starts with Durant and the conversation might move to, like I said, I get from a business perspective why you might consider doing that. But it doesn't mean a hard offer was made. It doesn't mean it's anything more than chatter. It doesn't mean it's even necessarily real. It doesn't. The way they're appointed is that the Celtics offered bran. So unless the nets are just like a erroneously thrown that out there, they hype up interests and who knows they could be marks isn't a bad place right now. If this goes wrong for him, his career isn't executives over. So he has to do something extreme like that to try to drum up interest to do whatever he can to get out of this good and setting a new price like this of brown smart and the picks is the best way to do that. Because his first attempt at towns I keep calling him Bennett. Edwards and pecks was so ridiculous that everyone's like, all right, yeah, we're gonna give you that. This seems a little more believable here. But again, if they just picked up the phone and we're tossing around names and doing what GMs do, and he turned that into the Celtics offered Brown, man. Everybody does that all the time. You know? To this degree? Yeah, I think it's pretty common. Because you're trying to show that they're in it. And they're real. But they'd have to be in an array of to say that. So again, I think the Celtics have legitimate interest in this. So I hope couldn't you. I mean, Durant Tatum, that is a one, two punch that would just be epic. And I hate that. I hate it. And the last thing I want is Durant and Tatum's ear. I hate it. I don't know. You don't want a guy flanking Tatum with a little edge. We always complain that Tatum doesn't stand up to guys. If you want to watch a fine one, Kate, like, look, your typical Boston fan or anybody out of market. This is my strictly emotional case against Kevin Durant. You know, you guys don't like Kevin Durant. I've said this on a show before. Like, you made fun of him for going to Golden State and taking the easy way out. You trashed the super team when he went over there with Kyrie. You got mad that they conspired and broke up what the Celtics were trying to go with here. He's a diva. He's got thin skin. He's always on social media. You know, anytime anybody criticizes him, he's frigging sparring with the owner of this company. We don't like him. You don't like him. You don't want a roof for him. You want to root again in 2016 when they sent for 80 and Isaiah. I get it. You hadn't gotten anything. You haven't gotten people to come here. They have a bunch of really good young interesting players. They have a bunch of the Lakers picks and swaps still from the Anthony Davis trade. That is a time. Who's the player going out? Who's the player going out though? You mentioned all the guys they have down there. Who's going out in a Durant trade? You're starting with Zion. You're asking for Zion first. Oh, I do. We're not deep into hypothetical territory. But yeah, I do Zion for the nets. Well, listen to the table. I just don't see why Durant would want to go if that's because CJ McCollum plus Brandon Ingram plus Kevin Durant plus other role players is a pretty good team. And for Jones much as anyone, but I'm not sure that all right, but listen, the nets are for the next side of it. Certainly you're getting a young potential superstar. I want to say potential and not actual because Zion, he hasn't finished a season yet. So I don't want to assume too much, but we know what the talent level is. If you can get Zion and all of the Lakers picks that the pelicans still own, that's a pretty good starting point, and you're probably going to get and you're going to get several of the other players as well. Maybe a herb Jones may be some of the other young guys. You're looking at it though from and look, I get what you're looking at it from. But from the net's perspective, why would the pelicans do that?.

"Beginning what they may have the best player that could be thrown into a deal for Kevin Durant. Not the best player other teams have. Like Phoenix has Devin Booker, but you're not getting him. Dallas has Luka Dončić. You're not getting the number one player on all these teams. The number two player though is going to be available. I think jaylen Brown is as good as it gets in that mix. I love this for so many reasons. One of which is, as you mentioned, Boston was a team that got a meeting with Kevin Durant in the Hamptons back in 2016 when the warriors ultimately landed him. And I think there was even some chatter at the time that if he hadn't picked the warriors it would have been the Celtics. If I recall, I don't know, I don't know if that's true. I remember that being the meeting that Tom Brady popped into or something and Isaiah Thomas was on that team. Look, they were an interesting team. Brad Stevens at that point was starting to really separate himself as an NBA coach and they had a successful season before. So look, at the very least, they were in the mix. Well, for Kevin Durant. Back then, and there are better team now. I love, first of all, I also love the idea of almost the reverse of the pierce Garnett deal where the aging star is now going the other direction. Correct. Probably with more left in the tank than Pearson Garnett had, probably. On the other hand, the Celtics are the that's then get jaylen Brown, the guy that the Celtics picked with one of the picks that the nets set them in the piercing garnette deal. So there's a nice little coming home. There's a nice little poetic twist there where they get jaylen Brown a guy that they could have drafted themselves if they hadn't made that ill fated Garnett pierce deal. Listen, I get it. Fans get invested in their guys, especially when your team just made the finals. You don't want to see a core player.

"Speaking of politicians in season four, we do see some power struggles between Durant and John Campbell who comes as the new governor of Wyoming. And the impression that I got was Durant's in charge, he's used to being in charge and then Campbell comes in the picture and Durant just doesn't take too kindly to having somebody in power, like a new person in power..

"This team is a 7 seed for a reason. And going into the series, there was a lot of a lot of respect for Kevin Durant, of course. But he's going up against the best defense in the league, a defense that is basically constructed to there's never been a defense that could successfully shut him down. But as good of a defense as he's ever faced in his life, Tatum is the best player in the series easily and just dominating the one on one matchup guarding Durant. As the primary defender in every game. So in terms of his legacy, this will be if they do lose the recording this on a Monday afternoon. If the nets do lose if they're swept, this will be the second first round series to ran has ever lost. He's a great, great, great, great player. I don't think this impacts too much of how we should view him. I think that how the nets have been coached, how the nets have been constructed, their decisions as an organization are much more emblematic of their struggles in this series. And so that's where I'll leave that. I think the way that Doran has been defended has been magnificent and sure, he could hit more shots, but there's a lot of issues going on in Brooklyn. Yeah, so first of all, I'm with you. I think his legacy is, I think his legacy is he's the best scorer ever. And I think he's undeniably like a top ten talent ever. I think kind of where the resume or accomplishments ultimately end up might be a little bit up for debate. I think if we want to go there, I think in a vacuum, most of us would say he's a better player than Steph Curry, but I think Steph is going to finish his career and rightfully so as the more accomplished player..

"He went to Brooklyn and within a year, everyone's like, oh man, he's calling out the kids right out of the gate, you know? And then all of this stuff, and then all of a sudden he just leaves in the middle of a season because he felt like taking a break. And this stuff going on this year. He's about that. He's just in the butt. And it's always the outside, right? It's never them. It's never the whole hearted scenario. And this is on Durant, Irving, harden himself, Nash. They all sat there and were like, we don't hear all this noise. Wait, what reports? Then all of a sudden days later, and they said, right before the deadline, the vino trade. And the trade happens. And so all of a sudden, it's like, oh, let's just, I just keep walking here and keep moving forward and everything's fine. Even though we just played this game for two weeks that there wasn't a fiasco inside the net locker room that led to one of the most shocking trades of all time. So there's always, and it's on every single person on this team. You hear it from Durant. You hear it from the coach. You hear from Kyrie certainly. Always just blaming the outside. Oh, it's a media. Oh, it's all the talk. It's this and that. And it's never them. Even though through two years now, the super team hasn't come close. And they play the Durant folk game, even email says it. I always drive me crazy when email says, oh, I've Durant's foot wasn't on the line. It's excuse after excuse after excuse. And it's funny because anyone gonna take accountability for anything. It's like, I think they think in their minds that they didn't lose the box. That it was just like some flukey thing and they just lost because it was close, man. By Giannis, we thought Giannis blew his knee apart. The fact that they had that upper hand there, you know, in a series because Giannis didn't look like he'd be right and then he came back. He was a frigging hero. So, you know, that one was close. That was really close. That could have gone either way there. You don't know what happens after that. But, you know, whatever. You lost. It's everything counts, you know? Stepping on the line counts. It's just, you know? I just think it's funny because it's quite literally a line, you know? And they went to overtime and scored two points. You got to make a box. The rules are very clear. Everyone forgets over time. They went to overtime and scored only the best part in shorter. Like, no. It's ten feet everywhere. It's like you.

"Like, this is how sports works like always and forever. There's nothing unique about your situation. You literally left the Celtics at the altar. You said you were going to marry them, and you left. And you just and now you're off with someone else. They're going to hate you forever, and they have every reason to. You earn it. I love this. I love this comment. It's blaming the victim. His victim blade. You guys were dying. You guys were dying for this dude two years ago. No, we were questioning two years ago. Like crazy. Like, we've always been, you know, outside of that first seat, or the first one, three, four months when there was no Hayward, and he was on my complete tear. Like, yeah, obviously we didn't, you know, we weren't going to say, oh man, he might leave Bolton, but two years ago that around that time, right before he was going for the very end of his tenure here, everybody was questioning Kyrie. I mean, we questioned if he even gave it his all in that series against the bucks. Never mind, after he eventually did make his decision and lead to Brooklyn. He was being questioned well before he made that decision well before them. And Jimmy and I can flat out say among the few people on record back there and we were back, we were at the garden. And we're looking around at people and we're like, nobody's gonna say this, huh? They should absolutely trade Kyrie at the trade deadline. Like, this is over. This is over. This is over, you know? And they didn't. But anyway, back to Kyrie, forget about that. This is the same, this is his problem. And this is a problem with a lot of those guys, like Kevin Durant. Like, yes. People are going to question when you leave the Golden State Warriors for something. When you join Golden State, people are going to say, you took the easy way out. Your job is to not care about that. It's not to make them think something else, okay? They're going to think that because that's what everybody would think. Okay, you can't beat them join them. You did it? Own it and love the fact that you won titles and move on, okay? I shouldn't matter to you. With Kyrie, they're going to hate you forever, and they probably have a right to because that's what fans do. Move on dude. It's not the fans that are wrong and you hear. That's how fans are. That's how they are. Just like just like they'll revere someone like big baby, who helped when who sits in somebody else's seat. That is someone to get into it later on. What happened? What would happen to them? You put it on the big screen, the crowd goes nuts. Bananas forever. It works the same way on the other side. When you're on the other side of me, exactly. Yeah. You can't make a girl go crazy, and then be like, yeah, do she was crazy. Like, you did that. She wasn't always crazy. You left her at the altar. Everyone gets booed, guys. You get when you choose to leave a team, you get booed, and sometimes it stinks, 'cause sometimes those guys gave their all. We can go back to like, you know, Johnny Damon, for example, was here with the Red Sox and, you know, won a World Series and wanted to stay here and was literally begging for them to match a contract that was totally reasonable and they didn't want him.

"That he didn't play well he played really poorly. Probably one of the worst games i've ever seen. But he had some key assists in that game most notably a nice left hand. Zip pass to kevin durant for a key layup. nice cut from durant with. I'm just. I'm still shocked. I was watching the game. Just shocked shocked shocked that they weren't involving him in the offensive actions. If you're the bucks explain to me tell me by curtain it was so clear to me as a novice. I never played the nba. Never coached never played college. I'm watching the game. Like why don't they just attack. James harden can't move. Why didn't they do that. That was a mistake. There's no it's houston. I can make for your family like you have to find a way to challenge james harden and not allow him to basically be out there and you really never go at them and the stat stands out to me. The most emotionally and psychologically is that james harden returned and play more minutes than yawns forty six minutes dot forty six seasons for her play minutes then jaanus so if you're watching the nfl game and elite wide receiver. The andrei hawkins are is playing against the rams and having a great game and movement of all around the field. What do you think jalen ramsey go go to the sideline until the defensive coordinator and his head coach. I'm following him. I don't care if you got me on the right side. I don't care what you're saying. I don't care what we practice. All we care what the game plan is. But i'm following him. He leads up in the backfield. I'll be he lands up.

"They didn't have turnovers. They didn't have steals or blocks track. This is the best performance in the playoffs. Statistically since nineteen eighty-three beyond the first round. So what he's doing when he did last night beyond the first one we we can talk about. Charles barkley did an amazing game in the first round of few like in nineteen ninety. Two damian. Lillard just dropped fifty five and a double overtime game against the denver nuggets. But this what we're seeing with. Kevin durant is the single best statistical performance beyond the first round since the full box score was tracked in one thousand nine hundred three tom. I was saying. I mean i don't know what is the greater compliment. What you said. I don't think it's up for dispute jordan. Never had that game. Given all of the circumstances involved that we never saw that anywhere in the career even in the playoff game. After which larry bird called him. God where michael jordan lost. He scored sixty three points. We have never seen that game from that situation from. I don't think anybody yeah. We haven't i mean you could put. I think you put in the modern era to me. Lebron's game six twenty in which he dropped forty one points eleven assists eight rebounds. Four blocks three steals whatever it was game. Six against the the seventy two. Seventy two ten seventy three and nine goals lawyers that is the to me a little bit higher than the simply because of the finals and the everything going on in that in two thousand sixteen season the stakes are higher in that game but statistically just looking at the box score you haven't seen this from michael jordan. You haven't seen this by steph curry. You haven't seen of the modern era. You have not seen a performance like this you can probably points and maybe wilt chamberlain and sixty two but nothing What you saw last night and giving james harden just. It was so he couldn't get into the paint. You could not get into the three point. I could not move any played. Forty six minutes and kevin durant. I mean the thing that really stuck out to me was when he was at the free. Throw line to put up the team up. Four in the in the final seconds of the game is two free throws. He's got forty eight points. They're up by three. He misses the first and he just goes. Who like so mad. He just like it became a medium right the face that he may became a mean. I'm asking you guys. Do you think he was. Matt moore mad. They didn't put fifty it was given tommy. It was putting the game away in movie. It's a four points and so it's a two possession game. He was more mad in his head that he couldn't get to the peace right. Yes one hundred percent top part of the reason. We're celebrating him the way we are. You're calling it. The greatest game ever played in it is the greatest game ever played is because of the absence of kyrie irving because of the stakes. But certainly because kyrie's not there and james harden is a shell of himself. yes and remember. I was on this show like two days ago talking about. This is the fact that kevin durant when he's not playing with james harden and kyrie irving. They're still really freaking good. They're really good. They're point margin is plus thirteen every one hundred possessions and people were writing nets off. Say oh there's no kyrie there's no gene. But i think there is something to the fact that when they play korean james harden no play the other guys know their roles in a play. Those roles better yet better defensive players on the floor and jeff green look at jeff. Green game is is a total anomaly. But when you look at this performance without those two guys In it's an incredible. Like what you stu gods want is. Put them on your shoulders as wade airing the team. He did that last night. I will say though to have a very stugatz opinion. He doesn't have to do it again right because this series is not over. They're going to win on the road. Now it's not always one. We have like one out of two games in in order to advance like and that's kind of playing every second and then having to go again forty eight hours later and if they lose that and having to go again forty eight hours later i for me. This is not. I don't think this is done as bad as milwaukee looked kind of bereft is. They looked in losing that game or durant prefers irving being outright tom for his own personal glorious just in general like he just.
