"I wanted to craftsman and prior to that. I did weaving. I actually have a bachelor of fine arts degree with a major in weaving. I spent seven years. Going to craft crafters until i couldn't stand it anymore. I could. it was too hard to make a living and for me. I wasn't really that good at selling. And the only the only way you can make a living was go crafters. There is no other way there. You could do what you're doing today like there's no other way to reach customers except through craft fairs or literally knocking on doing cold calls to galleries and things like that. Which is not in mind. A skill set So i just. I just couldn't do it anymore. It's just to bar wasn't making enough money. I had a young family so i switched to I did. I did spend two two years after guide either college doing working for my uncle. Who is graphic designer. So i had acquired enough skills that i could then get a job on job for about six months with another with a magazine company and then i started out on my own. I've been doing that. I've been doing that ever since. And that was a pretty decent way to make a living buck. The work was interesting. Work was challenging. I did have employees which was also challenging. I didn't really like it. That much but All the work that i was doing whether was A brochure or catalog or at or anything like that. It had no it had it all had very short shelf life. there's nothing lasting So although the work was interesting in challenging everything ended up in the trash in fairly short order. We didn't do books. So the the longest lasting thing we would do the like catalogs at nato may have the shelf life for a year and it just it just didn't it wasn't satisfying in many ways and i also liked working physically with the tutorial. I've always liked would so in two thousand and two. I was thinking about backing off the business. Bit and Maybe getting rid of the employees in just working at home. So i have this old Had to owned buildings next to each other on on rock right outside my house and wanted to renovate them and i got my neighbor. Who's does contract work and he helped design the renovations and we Made one we renovated the entire structure connected. These two buildings together ended in addition onto boasts. And the idea being that the two rooms would have been to shop in two rooms would be my new office at home while i never ended up working at home in that way but It turned out to be a perfect A great shaw turned out the top. Perfect for what. I'm doing in classes So that was two thousand two. You know i started. I started buying woodworking magazines reading the websites. At the time. I just knew i wanted to work with wood. I didn't know what i wanted to do. And in in doing all this reading i came. Mike dunbar's School for windsor chairs. Oh yeah and it sounded really interesting and Two thousand three. I went up. There took a class really really really liked it and came home and made another chair and over the next two or three years high took. I would go twice a year to mike and i think i ended up taking seven classes while on. How did he have did. He have you teaching. At the end of those success. He had a program for people to help them teach but you have more classes than that. Though he was really good again people to come back with but I also during that time. And i was working in total isolation at oh my head i i didn't know any woodworkers i didn't know any chair makers and in But during that time that period between two thousand three and two thousand six I i also came across. Brian boggs and really fell in love with that his iconic three slat ladder back chair and really really really wanted to learn how to make that chair. I took a class with him in two thousand six and it was up at. This school in canada called rosewood studio. Something like that is on the mississippi river in canada. I thought man that's going to be really far away while it turns out. There is an entirely other mississippi river and it was actually a few miles closer to my house than going to new hampshire for dumb mars classes and in that class. We did a two slider back. Which brian kinda made up on the spa and But it what it did was it taught me the the the the the sides learning about posting run construction as opposed to windsor stalk construction his approach to join a compared to dunbar was really really different and i really liked it so he was concerned about all kinds of things that dunbar never even touched on things that we take as chair makers take for granted or most of us grade direction tation super dry joints straight grain of high. All kinds of things that we do to make strong joint and brian was doing that in dunbar was not and so after. I took that class. Brian i looked for winter. Chairman present had similar approaches to going to take additional classes from which i ended up. Taking classical stuff curtis one class with curtis and a classes peak hour on free of those classes were.

"Your top five sports scandals are of all time and as I was talking earlier back in college would take what was happening in the news. Sport and sporting world kind of take that and we run within create top five list. Basov Net One example would have was it was the anniversary of the malice at the palace. The fight between the Pacers and the Pistons and some fans at the Palace of Auburn Hills. So we said all right what five NBA players? Do you want in a fight if you were industry fight. Who would you want on your team? So that's kind of an example of what we're going for here and with this. I thought Spring Training. We're still talking about the astros. I just saw a thing. I think combined Bregman Altuve Carreira and grill or hitting like one sixty. This spring obviously spring training. Even if the worst it'll cheating doubt they'd be cheating in spring training but it's kind of funny to see it so cheating scandals. Oh my goodness. There's my top five. So we're GONNA top-five sports scandals in history. I try to keep my list directly to sports. I could've added you know Tiger Woods. Oj Simpson obviously. Those are huge things but those kind of happened outside the framework of sports. So we'll keep on keeping my life. I don't know what Mike did. I don't know what he did but I kind of kept it to the top five so let us. Begin Mike. You're the you're the away team. You're the visiting team. I'll let you begin number five Well first of all let me go back to what you said there about the toughest. Nba Player in a street fight. One through five should have been a short show because it should have been Charles for all of those things you talked about that one hundred sixty one sixty number. The Astros are hitting. It's also the amount of times they've been hit combined this this spring training season so doesn't hurt my feelings at all with the World Series Champions. The Washington nationals but number five. I tried to stay away from some of the real life stuff to like the OJ stuff and all that. But excuse me I've still got the bronchitis here to try to get rid of but I actually kind of combined a two here just because one actually touches me and one is actually a big deal in the NY point shaving scandal actually of nineteen fifty one now. There was another big point. Shaving scandal too but the one the CCN Y one. I mean I think when you go back and you look at the biggest sports scandals of the forties fifties sixties post war era as we come into modern times. I mean I think this is still the gold standard of it and no surprise with sports that it centers around point shaving and it centers around the outcome of games and affected a lot of schools. That we're back to a time when the nit was actually the biggest conference tournament the NCAA tournament but you know the the span that this scandal went on for throughout the late forties early fifties early eighty six games that were fixed and it had a lot of ramifications because it wasn't just a wide affected. Bradley Out There Kentucky University of Toledo as well as a bunch of other New York schools. And I think that one tied in believe it or not. I'm tying in loosely here the the Maryland terrapins and the the death penalty that they were given their and it didn't have anything to do with point fixing but the penalty that they received was was in some ways as bad as C. C. N. Y. Because CCN Y was never really a functional basketball school. Again after that in the Maryland terrapins who after bias died went through a lot of upheaval left. You treselle go. Zimbabwe comes in from the university or from Dunbar high school that year after year after year will be the Mythical High School National Champions Adelaide. Reggie Williams Muggsy bogues. Reggie Lewis David Wingate Keith. Booth a lot of great players went through that Dunbar school but you know he had a law violations and unfortunately in the time that he was there when Gary Williams took over he got slapped in the face with no live. Tv and no postseason for a couple of years and they essentially gave Maryland the death penalty for basketball and much. Ccn got so there are loosely. Basically those college basketball scandals in the things in the ramifications affects the came from it. We're pretty brutal. I mean they're even still writing books about it. I think Ron bar in the last six months had an author on who wrote a book about that exact corruption. So very much still relevant. I like that Mike my number five. I didn't even I. I was doing research. I didn't even know about this because I was nine when it happened. But the two thousand Paralympic Spanish basketball team they won the gold medal and basketball at the Paralympics in two thousand awesome for them however a few a little bit of time afterwards a journalist did some digging and it was revealed that ten out of the twelve players on that team were not mentally disabled. Spain just went on to win a gold medal now. Cheating at the Olympics is despicable. It's bad it's horrible. Cheating at the Paralympics is next level. Scullery and I don't know how I didn't know about this. I had never even heard about it. Let alone I forgot about it. So number five Myla's it deserves more attention. So I'M GONNA put I put it onto the list. It'd beat out some things like Danny El Monte yet Danny Allante and Nancy Kerrigan and Tonia harding but two thousand Paralympic Spanish basketball team put ten out of twelve players not mentally disabled. They are my number five. How awful is the head coach at sea that Johnny Knoxville movie? The ringer where he They they rigged the Special Olympics so he can raise money. I mean that that is straight out of that book that has off four. But we're going to go with a history of awful as I keep mine. Collegiate believe it or not number four for me is actually. Smu Just existing brazen ways that they had ever. Since Ron Meyer got their way. Back in nineteen seventy eight. But but his his time they're starting to pay dividends late in the seventies and in the early eighties when they first went on probation in June of one thousand nine hundred eighty one and while. Smu was on probation. They continue to win one of the reasons they continue to win. Was they kept up violating everything they possibly could. The biggest thing paying players Melissa was still on probation from eighty one they got hit again by the NCAA which caused him to miss a bunch of ballgames and Miss TV and take away a bunch of scholarships. But it has that is going on as was so amazingly reported in The ESPN thirty for thirty. That was done. The Pony Express a documentary. That was done. They decided to phase out the payments that they were giving players which means they were still pay playing players when they busted again and basically time and time again. They had so many things that happened in. The southwest conference had so many teams on probation. The whole thing ended up blowing up and in one thousand nine hundred eighty seven. They had to cancel the entire season. Smu Is the first team to truly go on a death. Penalty and college football and things weren't the same for them for decades afterwards but the brazen nature that they had to continue to just double up on violations each time out every time they got busted they always made it worse for over and over again and you know they went from Eric Dickerson to basically you know being known for him to be known for the team that's constantly in scandal. My number I bundled some things much like you did number four. I'm just GONNA put title gambling and I'm GonNA include Pete Rose in Tim Donaghy. Pete rose we all know about. He was gambling on his team to win and all that he said he wasn't. Gambling got caught. We all know the Pete rose thing Tim Donaghy. I don't know if as many people remember it but Tim donaghy former. Nba Referee was using his position as a referee to change the outcome of games and there was a study done. Fifty fifty seven percent of the teams who were favored to win covered. When Tim Donaghy was roughing again now. That doesn't seem like a large number but anytime it's over fifty fifty. Yeah not a good look and he ended up going to jail. He's done a lot of media sense saying hey. I screwed up all that stuff but I was still a scandal that rocked the world. Because anytime betting and gambling and sports worlds collide. It's always juicy. Mike your number three. I might win by number three. Believe it or not and it's a it's a little lower than than maybe some have it but as it stands right now in this this should probably be higher. It could be higher as history goes on. I'm actually putting the Houston. Astros Science Scandal. This is where I'm putting this for right now. It looks as if we have kinda hit our limit with it. We've got four people that have been fired over. All players are being being but it doesn't look like anybody is going to suffer any other consequences off of this other than image issues. But I don't know about you but kind of stands right now. I mean unless anything changes. This certainly isn't worse than the Black Sox scandal hint hint for. What's coming up for me But would that said it is still amazing to the levels that this team went to cheat. It is obvious that they cheated has been proven that they cheated in their world series year and in two of the years that they won a championship. So this is a big deal. This is a big story whether it wants to be downplayed by major league baseball and Manfred in Houston or not actually. Didn't put the Astros on here. I very easily could have but I didn't so number three. I went with faith corruption and I kind of as a whole but it was all the Qatar being an US air quotes here that nobody can see but awarded the World Cup There was the drama with South Africa. Where they were promised to get another one down the line. It was just an absolute mess. Set Bladder was taking money from people from federations and getting kickbacks all of you look the other way or if you h-have yeah help our country do this. It was just a mess. I have a big soccer fan. I know there's corruption there's corruption not only in pizza but in the Italian Leagues. There's a lot of game throwing lake. A better team needs to win so the office of money to another team. Hey let us win and stuff like that so soccer is so corrupt and it makes me sad because I do love soccer mike number two. We'll each do our number twos. We've got to go to break about two minutes. So we'll spend a minute each and then when we come back after the break will hit it out of the park and the show with a number ones so number two for you. Number two for me is actually Panama. Lewis boxing trainer. And all you have to do is look at the nationally televised about an ABC. It was the UNDERCARD OF DAVID. Moore and Roberta ran from Madison Square Garden. June sixteen thousand nine hundred eighty three..

"Press pause and will be here when you get back so for this episode. Rio Topa gave all of us in the network up prompt. If we were to create another another show any show would it be. My answer is at Macon Pichu ratio. I Love I love how they bring us into lives. We never knew about her. Never appreciated but the problem with doing a bitchy worries as a podcast is that the people are no longer around interview. This dilemma is what inspired aspired our series last witness. The idea is to tell stories of the last surviving witnesses to major historical events. While they're still around today were revisiting visiting our very first last witness. Libya Hooker on May thirty first. Nineteen twenty one group of white residents launched an attack on a black middle class class neighborhood in Tulsa Oklahoma over eighteen hours white mob stormed into black homes schools and businesses the Tulsa race riots are considered one of the worst incidents of racial violence in American history. Libby Hooker was six years old. That day name is Olivia. Ajay and I may be the last survivor of catastrophe in Tulsa signed. The black part of town sat was a neighborhood where you could be treated with respect. My father had very Nice Samuel D. Khokar and son it was is a store that didn't carry shoddy teams they had Arrow shirts hoop in hammer suits to in a shiny shoes and spits and head. Those are good names in those days may thirty nineteen twenty one at first we saw. Aw a bunch of men with those Big Bang. Torchy's come through the backyard and I remember our mother put us and they're the table. She took the longest table while she had the cover for children and told us that the sale worried. It was horrifying thing for globe girl. It's it's only six years old trying to remember to keep quiet so they wouldn't know we were there. As those marauders came into the house. They trying to destroy anything that they could hanged. They took a huge axe and charity. Looking at my sister. I leans beloved piano quite quite a good Seattle and they thought that birth. It's something we shouldn't have When may left they went down to do more damage to people? Lived beside US down here here. They tried to destroy every black business. School and Church.
