Travel to Zagreb

"Let's start with a look at a European capital that's often overlooked by the beach crowd who enjoy Croatia's crystal clear coastline. But miss out on the scene in its capital city. It has a distinctively modern take on old world charm and it's just a few hours inland. To tell us about saga we're joined now by local guide Darya goateed. She's joined by Ben Curtis who writes about the Balkan regions elaborate history and thinks that Croatia's best period may be now Darya in Ben Welcome my pleasure. Same. Thank you for having. US Doria. You're from Zagreb your guide in Zagreb, a lot of Americans no Dubrovnik. Venice and a lot of Americans know the Anna Zagreb is right there in the middle. What should we know about Zagreb? Nanna. Saga is I would say the mix of. All these big capitals around and all these much better known cities around from historical perspective It was influenced by different cities and countries. So we have a little bit of all of that. What's an example? How is it a little bit of? How is it a little bit of Italy says it a little bit of the Slavic World So? obas part of the hops Burke monarchy later austro-hungary for few hundred. Years. And then architecture in town is very much what we would call out through nor Central European. So the mixture of Hungarian hungarian-austrian. We don't have much Dubrovnik textures that. Is Zog. Is completely different about the cuisine that scene is also very influenced by Austria but not only that we do eat struggles and. A lot of meat and potatoes and then on the other hand we also eat. A lot of Pasta beat some. We are very sensitive on coughing, and then we also have the Turkish influence because arguable also for few centuries, just about forty, five, fifty miles Sir north from the Ottoman Empire boarder okay. It's a crossroads release across through the s the Ben Curtis here in American who has a fascination and a deep interest in this part of Europe how would you say Zagreb is unique Zagreb is unique for being this gem of a central European capital. So everybody can measure saying they know Budapest, Vienna, they know Prague, but here's this. Gym of a historical city that hardly any American visits right and even though Zagreb stars rising on the Tourism Front these days but you can go there and it's not gonna be jammed with busloads of tourists from all over the place you're not gonNA hear a lot of other North American accents and you're going to be able to experience the city where the fabric of locals you're going to be sitting in a cafe with mostly other people from Zagreb, and that's great and it's hard to find that in Dubrovnik are in Vienna these days a year. Exactly. So if you had two nights in in one Danes, is there enough to keep you busy. Yeah. For sure I think, what would you do if you're gonNA show me around for a day the it's a great kind of one day stop if you're coming in and out for some of the coast. So Zagreb surprisingly has some of I think are the best museums of its kind in Europe now they're quirky right? You don't. Go desire grab for the Louvre or something like that. But you go to Zagreb for these unusual small museums like the Museum of naive art, which is great sort of not formally trained perhaps painters but really characteristic art with peasant themes. The famous one which is kind of made headlines around the world is a museum of broken relationships which is filled with these stories of couples who have broken up the objects that they have Meant something to them and they've given it this museum and so it's just a really interesting kind of poignant sometimes hilarious trip through people's relationships. So when we think of this naive art, I love this idea because you go to most art galleries in Europe Bennett, the opposite of naive arted this refined fully embraced high-society art but naive art is by definition just unschooled hasn't Sir Working People that just had a passion for painting. Exactly but are often very, very talented even if they didn't train at the academy or something like that but they're expressing the lives and cultures and artistic visions of people from the rural areas and it's genius really an undiscovered genius that happen to come out of the farm community or something absolutely. I love that museum by the way that that's really one of the unique things in Europe and it is in the capital of Croatia Zagreb.

"The process isn't easy to enter Croatia. You must have proof that you tested negative for Coben 19 no more than 48 hours before entering the country. I just got back from Having my test antibody tests double prepared no matter what, and show where you're staying Way. Meet Aaron as she crosses the border after all that work. What was it like when you actually across the border and made it a Croatian? There's nothing like it when you see those beautiful cliffs and you know Your landing, and then you kind of get a little bit antsy in your stomach. And then then it's all good on everything I did was worth it. Flights into the seaside tourist mecca of Dubrovnik are already up more than 300% in just the past few weeks. But medical experts caution that even if borders are open, traveling still poses a danger. Bottom line is this might not be the year to take one of those long trips. It's better if you do a staycation or you go on a road trip with your family for Stacey and Derek. Who just flew in from Phoenix. They say the risk is worth it was worth the rest Rest. While some locals say they're worried about welcoming people from hot spots like US, a local infectious disease expert tells us that she believes no tourist has brought the virus of Dubrovnik so far. That the entire country currently has about 800 cases and fewer than 20 in Dubrovnik. For many people who work in the tourism industry here, they say whatever the risk, the economic upside is worth it. There were always good spenders, so they always liked Americans more preferred Americans than the others. The number of Americans visiting Croatia just continues to increase year after year. Last year, they started a direct flight for the very first time between the two countries. Now this has all come to in your stand still, but the country hopes that by opening up their borders at least a little bit that could save their tourism industry with summer. That's Maggie. "And so we are talking are twelve favourite and we always tell you that when we do these list podcast and i don't think we've ever done before because because typically we do not discuss what you make your list. I make my list. We don't discuss before however this time we thought well we're gonna have so ol- many similar thing yes that it was kind of silly for us to make our own list and then go through the list because there would be all the same really similar exactly and and to be fair i while i don't think i know travel likes ice cream a little bit more than me so i kind of bowed to his list to your palate. I suppose because to my ice cream and jalal your prowess <hes> because you were the one who loves ice cream so much i mean i like it but you are the ice cream fanatics so in in terms of ranking i felt as though will you know we discussed it but and for each one we'll talk you know. We had a little bit of differences so we'll go in on each one. Maybe i thought it was should be a little higher a little lower so we could talk that but we did you talk about our list ahead of time and before we even jump in two honorable mentions because of course we have a few hundred mentioned. I wanna talk as you said. I ah you could say prowess. You could say obsession you any of that kind of stuff. When it comes to how much i like shout on ice cream but i do want to talk about a few of the things that we look for specifically typically me when we're talking about best ice cream places and have obviously the first thing is far and away the quality of the the taste the consistency all that stuff. That's eighty eighty five percent of it right but we're we like to talk about experiences as a whole. It's not just about getting a scoop of ice cream. Because of course we've got to go deeper than that. I mean we're recording recording a podcast on this. We're not just listing the best ice cream so it is about the experience and one of the things that trav- really really really really either love or complains about when they don't do it is allowing you to taste the ice cream. Yes so th i get it. There are places if you're at the beach and it's super busy that day i get it if they're only like hey you can have one or two tastes or something like that or some place to even know tastes but i use a little little bit of discretion. If i'm coming into your place this was this happened to us in dubrovnik. I was going into july. There was no one there and i said how can i sample and said no tastes and i'm like why yeah i'm gonna buy something. It almost made me wanna leave because i just think it's silly. You have a product. You want to give me a ton of it. I'm not gonna come in their taste and then walkout. How so you should let me taste the flavors if you don't. That's a huge strike against you now. Could you still make this list. Yes but huge strike another thing thing that i am a big proponent of and get a little upset if they don't do but i i am more understanding. Yes is the idea of split scoops so if you don't notice put scoop is it's essentially essentially if you come in and you say well. I only want one scoop of ice cream scoops worth of ice cream that amount but i want to flavors. Can i do that. I think i could be wrong here but most places are finally catching on and allowing this year because you don't always want to go and get three scoops of ice cream dishes sample three flavors. That's a lot a lot of ice cream and if you're eating a lot in the summer you don't want to eat three scoops every day right so i just i you know i won't one scoop because i'm probably gonna go to another ice cream shop that that day so can i get to flavors and so if they allow you to put scoop..

"It's, it's, it's crazy that this real estate, just sits there still in nobody has bought it. And I mean, obviously, you'd have to just bulldoze these, you can't even repair them, but it's just crazy that they're not that nobody is building on that. If you want it to be really cool, cooler than me, I would spend a night out anywhere. And you would wake up in this in hotel looking at these views, I found out, just in backstory, that they were mostly for the military. So they were places that they would bring the military for like real rest and relaxation. And Tito use to, you know, doing Yugoslavian time, Tito, used to bring military there and things like that. Really, really cool abandoned hotels. And the beach is really nice there in coup pari. So if you have a car, and you wanna get down there or you can take a taxi, or I think probably a bus down to coupon and explore well worth half a day or a day, there is another abandoned hotel called the Belvedere hotel that is within walking distance of Dubrovnik, and you just had south out of the old city and just keep walking until you hit it. I looked this up because I didn't want to upset the game of thrones fanatics here they filmed after we had went the first time had five years ago, they went, and they filmed a really famous scene there, and that was the fight between battle Boutin prince over on and the mountain in season four, so they filmed, this really cool scene, there in this amphitheater that we had stood on before they film game of thrones there. And then I didn't get the chance to go back because we ran out of time. But that's here, some huge financier has bought this hotel, and is going to renovate it supposedly. That's what you hear all the time. Getting in crashes that they're going to do this. And then the Croatian government wants their cut, and there's a lot of corruptions still abandoned. It doesn't look like anything's going on there because you can kind of see it from some locations in rubbing because it's kind of like around a couple. See Ben's on the cliff there, it's, it's just so cool. These abandoned hotels are really unique and just fun to explore. And it's just interesting. Little part of history that, you know, if you were in another country, I feel and maybe ten years from now. It will not be there anymore. Who knows about five years ago? We were there. You don't go. We thought, oh man. This is pretty neat will it ever change. And we actually worried coming back. 'cause ratio has only gotten more popular new problem because only got new popular more popular that they'd be different, and they're exactly the same. Yeah. So who knows how long it'll last? But go check it out for sure. All right in the old city. Then if we gotta talk a little bit about eating, because you're going to wander around the old city, that's the, that's the great thing to do hit the city walls, then wander around all the alleyways, you find yourself some restaurants, here are a few of our favorites will starting with one that we really recommended five years ago. And we went back to and we'd be remiss if we didn't tell you this, it was just decent. It wasn't bad. But went five years ago, we thought, hey, this is a fantastic restaurant so much that we pumped it up in the podcast. And so much of that we went back to it again with my parents here, it was just. Okay. And that was called Wanda. Yeah. I mean it we ate there and it was fine. But. Didn't blow us away. So I think there are probably other places in Dubrovnik, if you do a little research, that would be better by also had fantastic pesto last time, we went that was one of the things like this was the best pasteurized rain. I asked them. Hey, can I get some of your pesto and they said, we don't have it? Yeah..
