"There are 28th in goals above expected. But across the board, they do look pretty good in terms of being able to create opportunities and things like that. I will say as a payment fan who's been watching them for the past couple of months, the vibes are weird. The vibes are a little off. And I don't know how to really enter that into my strict analytical analysis. Maybe I'll just pass it off on a goaltending and write it off that way. But the vibes are very strange with this penguins team. And especially with the momentum the rangers have in the way that they've played them, as much better as the penguins underlined numbers are than New York. I do have a hard time thinking that they're going to come out and really kind of stomp them in this series. I think we're all all three of us are big vibes, guys. And so I think, I think you got a certain model. It's funny. I was thinking about like, oh, what am I going to say on this podcast later today? And I was just thinking about all the matchups we're going to talk about. And I was like, you know what? There's just some match ups where it's like, this is really close when I was filling out my bracket this morning is another. Example, where I was like, it's a really close, but I just think the vibes on this one team are a little bit better than the vibes on this other team. And if we're saying it's a 7 game series, then vibes absolutely can be the difference. And I'm allowed to say that. So here's the reason for optimism that this is a legit improvement from the rangers. You mentioned Jack you know, there's an argument to me that hockey is at least a bit of a weak link driven sport in terms of like if you have legitimate black holes in your lineup, it's going to have a trickle down effect on others. And they basically got all of those guys out of their rotation. At the start of the year, they were playing Morgan Barron, who had a 33.6 expected goal share. Greg, 35.3 Johnny brudzinski 38.1 and libor Hayek at 40.7, which actually seems high. I've watched him play hockey and it seems like that's overrated libor high. So all those guys are just getting completely obliterated and now they're no longer playing roles for them. They took advantage of Florida's obscene for depth by basically just stealing Frank patrono from them. Plug them in with a sabana Jennifer gave them a bit more of a rush element in terms of his shooting ability. He scored 7 5 one 5 goals for them. That's great. And I think the big one is, I don't know what was going on with our Timmy Panera and 5 one 5 performance at the start of the year. But he was just getting cratered when he was on the ice. And they added Andrew Cobb, which allowed them to stop wasting minutes on dryden hunt in the top 6 and he's been significantly better. I know he got banged up recently, but it seems like he's going to be good to go for the series. And when planarians, when parents cook in when he's bouncing around the ice and he's making stuff happen in the offensive zone, they're clearly a significantly better team..

This is masters in business with Barry red holtz on Bloomberg radio My extra special guest this week is Michelle sites She is the chairman and chief executive officer of Russell investments The firm manages over $331 billion with an additional 2.8 trillion under advisement they trade over $2.6 trillion in equities a year They are the 6th largest manager in the world half of their revenues comes from outside of the United States Michelle cites is a member of all the usual lists most powerful women in finance the power 100 most influential women in U.S. finance Michelle sites welcome to Bloomberg Barry thank you very much for having me My pleasure So let me jump to my first question So you spent about 21 years at William Blair Tell us a little bit about how you got into the finance industry Sure sure Well going back I decided early on that it was what I wanted to do So before I applied to colleges I decided that I wanted to go into business And that was a cumulative impact of several things like many people in life influenced by my parents first my father was very influential in my formative years but especially as it revolved around business and dealing with people He was a second generation entrepreneur And from the age of 12 I worked by his side after school on the weekends During summer and he really was quite impactful And how I decided to pursue a degree in which college to go to On the flip side my mother was very influential And I would say more from the standpoint of the impact I wanted to have and kind of I guess I would say control for financial stability She worked very hard but it was a long and difficult path for her My parents divorced when I was young And so I just I saw firsthand the need to leverage people's hard work and drive them toward financial security And so I wanted to master money I guess is the best the best way to phrase it So I read all those money master books by I think it was John train Buffett shareholder letters et cetera but I was just fascinated with the miracle of compound interest and the like and that's when I decided that investing was what I wanted to do So that set me on my trajectory early on and before I even set off for college So the first I don't know if I should call it half but certainly the first part of your career you're on the asset management side you eventually rise to the leadership of William Blair and now you serve as CEO of Russell investments how did managing assets and being part of a larger corporate entity help prepare you for your present leadership role That's a really good question especially the way you phrase it Not many people ask me about the similarities or the leverage From being an investor to being a leader So that's a poignant question because I think there are strong similarities First of all I would say that just what energizes me aligns to the role both the investing role as well as the leadership role And so I would say that solving solving problems energizes me trying to figure out what the root cause problems are And making sure that there's a level of human connection that makes the work meaningful inspires me And so I think that just as a touchstone that's been critically important both to being able to be a lifelong learner as an investor but also as a leader in a people and knowledge worker industry The second the second thing I would say is that as a p.m. as an investor where I was most additive to my peer discussions I do believe investing as a team sport and you make each other better by coming at problem solving and the positive of investing with different perspectives And mine was that I was a very structured and strategic thinker I could do the analyst role and the modeling role but it didn't excite me as much As digging into the problem that a company was solving for and how was it creating a durable sustainable franchise that was frankly some large way additive to society and fulfilling a societal need And so that was really what I enjoyed And it aligns very much with being a CEO as well And so I think that part was very important I think also just being data driven and your decision making but being very understanding of how important people and teams are whether they be management teams for the companies that you're investing in or the culture of an organization or the ability to execute on a strategic plan all has to be with a very strong people component Default what is your incentive to engage in that transaction off of your own balance sheet What is the incentive to issue them a line of credit You're not going to see the return on that So if you want to it's a balancing between maintaining access to the dollar but also is this financial sense for us Thanks to Julia friedlander director of the economic statecraft initiative at the Atlantic council Coming up my conversation with Pfizer CEO Albert bourla about his new book moonshot inside Pfizer's 9 month race to make the on three others currently at 6 under par With a Bloomberg sports update not Frank charity This is Bloomberg opinion on Bloomberg radio bring you news comments and insights from Bloomberg opinions worldwide team of editors and columnists I'm June grosso Coming up on the show Ford's big EV push Plus with inflationary pressure set to intensify where we'll consumers choose to cut their spending But first the U.S. has held on to about $7 billion since blocking foreign currency reserves in Afghanistan last August Families of victims of the September 11th terror attacks could receive a significant portion of that money as part of an executive order signed by President Biden But Bloomberg opinion editor in a Sid hajari says managing the money is risky and it would be best used to stabilize Afghanistan's economy The United States is holding on to $7 billion of money that belongs to Afghanistan how did that come about So when the Taliban took over the government Afghanistan's Central Bank reserves were mostly held outside the country about 7 billion here in the U.S. Another couple of billion in Europe in the Middle East And because the Taliban were not recognized as the official government of Afghanistan the United States and everyone else froze these reserves And the problem was that while they were frozen a group of 9 11 families who had years ago wanted default judgment against the Taliban laid claim to the money and the administration had to decide what to do with it whether they would have access to it or not So what they did last month was they said we're going to set aside half of this potentially for humanitarian relief for Afghanistan and the other half 3.5 billion is what you can argue for in court that's all So the government can decide what to do with this money It's very complicated And they did have to run this by a court in a judge recently agreed with them that they could do this much of it Afghanistan obviously says that this shouldn't be within the purview of the United States government that this is their money And it should be handed over Do you think that this is a bad idea I do think it's a bad idea For a couple of reasons no one's talking about giving this money to the Taliban itself But this money is there It belongs to the Afghan people Some of it actually directly belongs to them About somewhere between 509 100 million of it represents assets of private Afghan commercial banks that were held at the Central Bank So this is money that belongs to Afghan citizens in Afghan businesses Overall this money was there not to fund the government not to pay for humanitarian relief It's there to backstop the currency And to keep the banking system afloat And that's the real problem in Afghanistan right now I mean they've got a problem with drought They've got a problem with poverty and especially with hunger right now But the real problem with hunger is not a lack of food It's a lack of money People can't access money in the bank banks aren't lending anymore And until you solve that problem you're never going to be able to address the humanitarian problems Is there a concern that by propping up the economy you're propping up the Taliban You can make that argument If there is an argument that if you stabilize things there that that's somehow benefits The Taliban because there will be less opposition to their rule because people will not be so desperate But if you look at what's happening right now people aren't blaming the Taliban for this economic crisis They're blaming the United States And it does not serve our purposes to make Afghanistan fail That just opens up more potential for terrorist groups to recruit I mean it's a humanitarian catastrophe And we will be blamed for it And to some degree rightly So I think we need to focus on what's best for Afghans and deal with the repercussions on the Taliban later So Biden announced this is it a done deal No I mean all he's done is he announced that this is what they wanted to do They haven't said what they intend to do with the three and a half billion that they've set aside that they can't be accessed by the 9 11 families And they have I think smartly said that they're thinking of using it to recapitalize the Afghan Central Bank rather than using it to buy food and medicine for instance because that stuff needs to be paid for but it should be paid for out of other funds So the fact that Biden set aside or the federal government set aside half of the 7 billion for the 9 11.

"Center ice sports night's match up the Panthers riding a three game winning streak. It's tights game. The Panthers playing host to the New York. Islanders Panthers have won three in a row. There are thirty six thirty two and twelve on the year. Haters, come in twenty thirteen and six on home ice, the seasonal the islanders. Come in forty six twenty seven seven they have road Mark of twenty two fourteen and three Doug games. Billy Lindsay, Kevin Rogers with you high above rinkside here tonight. We're going to set the table for this matchup Panthers. And the islanders will have the hot players to watch coming up shortly. We'll have a look at the starting lineups the scratches the starting goaltenders from Geico all that coming up very shortly as well. But first let's hear from the Panthers head coach Bob owner. And the first thing I asked him what the biggest keys have been in the Panthers three straight victories. Goaltending is. I think that you know, that's something. We talk about we've talked about all year. And then in a Louis really come in the Ottawa game. The last. Three games. And you know, he's made big saves at the right times. And you know, sometimes when we weren't playing. Well, he kept us until we found her game. And then that's the big differences making those two or three or four game changing game momentum saves and we've gotten those we've got some timely goaltenders timely goals and the barky line, obviously remains to be on fire. And we've got some contributions the lineup. No brower line in a couple of other lines Borghese Lang contributing last game. It's makes a big difference. I think we've been more intensity. We're winning more one on one battles and just all around better team game. And a couple of young guys to ask you about you mentioned the goaltending excited to get him out to bow back into into a home game here tonight. Yeah. You know, I think his first sort of quarter season in the NHL started off really, well, and and you know, he came back down to earth a little bit and always learning how to be a an NHL goal in how hard it is. And you know, facing different opponents every night in different buildings. I think he's done a real good job with that. And tonight like. See him finish off. And I was strong game and feel good about himself after the season's over when asked about Dryden hunts game. He's been a good contributor here. And how much has he been able to benefit from playing online with with a couple of veterans here lately? Shame Troy grounding. It's really helped. And I think they all complement each other. You know, they're all heavy guys. And they're all straight line guys. And they like to work off a four checks in cycles. And I think that's good for game. You know, it took him a while to find his groove in again, another young guy that's really gone from being a scorer, and the junior level and the H L level now to here to figure out what he needs to do to stick around here and be effective any Taylor. And you could see he starting to find that. And and and the more he plays in the more. He finds his niche and what he needs to be successful. That's when you see certain high success on the on the statute. And it's nice to see I think that's. He's a real nice. I realize turnaround to his his year this year in in tonight. What do you expect from this matchup against the islanders is is fun for you to coach against berry? Trots who I know you go way back with. Yeah. Tried see was his first NHL job. And I was one of his players and one of his assistant captains in Nashville expansion. It was amazing year for the NHL, but anybody who was involved in that first year Nashville is just a memorable year. And it was a pleasure obviously having to to work with him. And and now against him. I think that is tease brought over a lot of stuff obviously from Washington. So playing Washington last game in New York today, I think Richie a lot of the similar systems, you know, but he's had a great year. And he's got this team turned around. And you know, we have to be ready to these guys work. They played for sixty minutes. They've got great goaltending. Maybe some of the best goaltending in the league all year, and we're just gonna have to worry about you know, again trying to try to compete in stay focused here in six periods. We wanna make. Sure that we play hard for home fans. Head coach Babu cnor right there time now for a free game. Scouting report. Sponsored by.

"The confidence back a little bit playing older guys helps the last game some pretty and and just how valuable is it for for a young guy like yourself to be on the line with a couple of veteran guys like Riley Sheahan, and Troy Brouwer just what how much are you able to pick up playing with guys like that? Yeah. It's just more of a commun- presence, especially since he's good teams and things a little chaotic out there. You know, they're making plays and stuff like that. It's just a huge huge to happen by my side. Just to talk to calm you down a little bit. You know, the the fun to play with big lots of plays Chris Riley as we got the Panthers up one nothing here on hunter guest downstairs outside the Panthers Dressler after one thanks very much for your time here in best luck the rest of the way. Thank you. That is trying to the Panthers downstairs outside the dressing room after one period of play and again, a guy in Bob hooters had great things to say about Dryden hunts game. And and and Billy the looking at Dryden on he's a guy who in Bob Wagner, talk about this recently in junior had huge offensive numbers when he's in Springfield in the American League. He's a you know, a score. He's a power play guy. He's a guy that they're counting on for production. When he comes in here. He's playing you know, he's playing that heavy game. He's playing you know, he's playing in a checking role, and that takes a lot for got to be able to evolve his game like that at the at the different levels. And he's done a heck of a job when you scored the lower levels where you have to be able to do when you come up here you have to be able to play defense you have to be able to provide energy you have to be able to affect the game without scoring. And if you can finally find that scoring Chen can't touch, and you can do those other things you'll find yourself with the job because that's basically I scored at the lower levels as well. But once they come here realize I could block shots fight occasionally kilson penalties and gain the trust of the coach then that offense of stuff comes around. But that's how you find and make a way as a living in the NHL as a player, and he's been able to provide that even money wasn't scoring. He had the ability to affect teams with his energy in that motor that never stopped. And it's nice to see him says start to get that offense a production. Doing a great job. Dryden hunt. This season for the Panthers. Appearing in his thirtieth game this year for the Panthers. In Panthers have one nothing lead. After twenty minutes here of the Washington Capitals that Phoenix Stanley Cup. Champions are fort first intermission show is straight ahead as the Panthers lead one nothing here over the.

"And look at what's next for the cats. Knock off the Boston Bruins here at TD garden. A big win for the Panthers here in this. One Panthers improved the record of thirty five thirty two and twelve on the year. Boston's record dips to forty seven twenty two and nine now twenty nine eight and three at home. The Panthers in the Bruins twelve game home win streak here. So it was a twelve game win streak at home for Boston. A fourteen game point streak at home for Boston. And the Panthers put an end of that Doug play games here with you to kick off the cats recap show will be joined by one of the Panthers downstairs outside the dressing room here in just a moment following this four one victory here in Boston. And the Panthers put an exclamation point on this four game road trip. They get the win here in this one. And. Again, the Panthers took the lead. The I really never looked back in this thing, and he led to nothing after that first period, and they were able to turn it into a four one victory here in Boston. So four one the final Panthers.
