"Kenny Rogers, woody Williams, Darren dreifort, Paul bird, run for lone Danny graves, Braden looper, who had a very interesting career Justin dukeshire, CJ Wilson, Jeff margia, naftali police as Merlin Vasquez and JC Ramirez and Josh Lynn bum, actually. And then Jeffrey springs. So springs was the first to do it since Lin blom coming back from overseas. I suppose in 2020. And it's quite rare and the other thing that makes springs conversion rare is that it was successful. He actually he got better pitching primarily as a starter than he had pitching exclusively as a reliever. So he had a 2.46 ERA in 2022 while making 25 starts in 33 games. So we limited that initial sample of 21 to guys who had a better ERA in their first season as a starter than they did in their career to date prior to that point. And that limits it to only ten guys. Okay, so we're whittling the sample down even more here and that limits us to Wilhelm can howl, Darren Dreyfus, Paul bird, Ron wallon, Justin dukeshire, CJ Wilson, Jeff simard, and JC Ramirez, and then springs. I guess that's actually not a bad rate. That's like almost half of the guys who did make these unusual conversions had a better ERA in their first year as a starter than they had as a reliever prior to that point. So I suppose that means or suggest that teams are picking the right people when they anoint someone to make this odd conversion. But here's the really extraordinary thing about springs. This was his best ERA in any year yet. So not just better than his career ERA to date prior to the conversion season, but also his ERA in 2022 was his best single season ERA of his career. And that has been accomplished by only one player prior to this. JC Ramirez, so JC Ramirez, he started in 2013, or he began his career in 2013, but he did not start in 2013. He transitioned to starting in 2017 so that was his fourth season. And it went well. So 2013, he had a 7.5 ERA and then 2015, he had a 5.3 ERA. And I should say, I think Ryan tossed out seasons with 15 and fewer innings. So there was some innings limit here that was also applied. And so Ramirez, you know, 7 point 5 6 ERA with the Seattle, I guess that was in a partial season 2016, you had a 4.35 ERA. And then 2017, he starts with the angels 24 out of 27 games, and he had a 4.15 ERA that you're above average better than average ERA plus. So it went okay. And that's really the only post World War II at least precedent for a pitcher making the Jeffrey springs conversion and having it go as well as it did relative to his previous career. And the rays will hope that the rest of springs his career will not be like JC Ramirez, because 2018. He started two games and two appearances and had a 9.45 ERA and then the following year he was back in the bullpen for 5 games and then he was done, I guess he got hurt and it did not presage a long and successful career as a starter. But at least for when you're at work and I guess he was still pitching in triple-A in 2022 in the Venezuelan winter league. So he's still bouncing around out there, but springs really an outlier almost unprecedented to have someone who fits quite these qualifications. So it's a bold move and it worked out for him. Well, to reference a name that you said, maybe 20 minutes ago, because when you have said a lot of words, I think the important thing for all involved is to know when to hold them. I want to fold them. Yes, exactly. I was like, oh, maybe that'll be the last set of names, and then they were like, 5 more sets and I was like, I'm doing the reference anyway. Yeah. It worked. So yeah, four year contract extension, $31 million over the course of the deal with the options and other incentives and such. And if you're wondering, well, how did they decide that Jeffrey springs would be a candidate for this unusual conversion? Well, I asked someone with the race. I won't say who, you know, I could chat with the anyone who works for the race really. I don't know who might come to mind for podcast listeners, someone who is currently employed by the race. But you know, I'm not specifying who it is necessarily. But they had a bunch of guys hurt, which is basically why they started doing the opener, was that they were just shorthanded. So Shane baz was heard and patino was heard in yarbrough was hurt and Maslow was hurt. So they had four starters, maybe at most they had Shane mcclanahan and they had Kluber and they had Josh Fleming and they had drew Rasmussen and they were like, we need someone else here and no one wanted to trade at that point in the year and some of the coaches thought maybe springs. Maybe we could stretch springs out and they were intrigued by that possibility and also springs himself expressed enthusiasm unprompted for starting. So that always helps when the player is on board. So it seemed to make some sense. And the coaches were intrigued by him as a starting candidate because he had three pitches and he threw strikes and he had been pretty successful as a reliever with the rays and he has a controlled delivery, nothing to herky jerky or max effort. So in retrospect, seems like, yeah, maybe he could have done this, so he had no serious arm injuries in the past. So for all those reasons, he kind of fit the criteria and they tried it and it worked and it worked for him and he got himself an extension. So that's how that happened. But very, very rare. And lastly, I have one that is inspired by the 2003 sci-fi classic the core, which will turn 20 in March. Now the core has been back in the news to some extent because the real life earth's core has stopped rotating. So scientists have determined that the core has stopped or is stopping and is maybe reversing direction, which is basically the plot of the 2003 sci-fi classic the core, right? The earth's core is not spinning anymore or is stopping and this is going to be disastrous and the earth's electromagnetic field is going to be destroyed and so they have to go and nuke the corridor to get it started again. It's kind of a fun movie if you watch it in the right spirit to many scruples and being a stickler for sci-fi accuracy or scientific accuracy. But here's the thing, we got an email from listener Andy in Portland, Andy said in light of the news that the earth's core may be slowing in reversing, I decided to watch the 2003 classic the core, the film starts with a space shuttle flying over Dodger Stadium during opening day with Sean green in the box, and Mike Hampton pitching. Two questions from Andy, one does this make it a baseball movie. Two is this the most 2003 at bat imaginable. The answer to question one is absolutely. It makes it a baseball movie by the effectively wild definition of baseball movie. This is like a 22nd scene. The space shuttle, it's like on reentry and it's a burning up and they've got to reroute over Los Angeles and I think Randall munroe of XKCD fame actually interrogated whether the space shuttle part of this is accurate, whether it's a space shuttle could do this and land like this and the answer is no, probably not, which is not particularly surprising. That's the answer to every question about the core probably, but there's this 22nd scene where the space shuttle with not very impressive special effects flies over Dodger Stadium and Mike Hampton is pitching a Sean green and Sean green like looks up because there's a sonic boom as the space shuttle passes overhead. This is on YouTube, so I will link to it on the show page. Guidance is bad. You

"Discount on an $80 one year subscription for the baseball tool or for any of the single sport tools, although they also have multi sport options, we love stad head, you know we do. So we got a question about that drew Rasmussen start that he made for the race. Yeah. He's having a nice year. I know Ben clemons just wrote about him and his new written improved Qatar. And he looked like he was going to go for a complete game. Yes, he did. Go for it. Which would be quite rare for a raised pitcher. And he didn't quite make it. He had a very low pitch count. He started the 9th, but then he gave up a double and a ground out and then there was a wild pitch and a run scored and then there was a strikeout and then he was replaced for the end of that inning, but he had a perfect game through 8. I'm kind of burying the lead here, right? So he was going for a perfect game. And he didn't get it, but we got a question here. It was really a question about a question, but Kevin Patreon supporters said on August 14th, Ethan Ellis started a question on the effectively wild Facebook group, asking which is more impressive, a perfect 8 innings, or a no hitter, which brings up the question what has happened more often. So even though he did not finish off the perfect game, he did start with 8 perfect innings, so is that in itself maybe more impressive than no hitter that is in 9 innings and I will leave that question to you to ponder, but I will give you the data and this is from frequent stat plus consultant Ryan Nelson. So since 1916, there have been 48 and this may have been before Rasmussen starts perfect 8 Ryan was calling them. So 48 games where the starter pitched 8 perfect innings to start out, including the 19 perfect games over that time. Over that same period, there have been 223 single pitcher 9 inning no hitters. So a perfect 8 is much rarer than a 9 inning no hitter. And I wondered, well, how far down do you have to go until it's roughly the same rate, right? So what number of perfect innings to start a game is equivalent if not in difficulty at least in frequency to a 9 inning, no hitter. And it turns out you have to lower the bar quite a bit actually to make it equivalent. So 7 perfect innings to start, that has happened only a 137 times, including the 19 actual perfectos. Now 6 perfect innings is 427 times, so that is more than the number of 9 inning no hitters. So basically, the 9 inning no hitter is about as common as between a 6 and a third and 6 and two thirds perfect inning start to an outing. So there have been a 198 times when a pitcher started with 6 and two thirds perfect innings, which is about as close as we can get without coming up with the 6 and a half innings or something like that, which would lead to probably some pedantic emails so that's basically the exchange rate there. You have roughly as many 6 and two thirds perfect inning starts as you do 9 inning no hitters that are actually finished off. So that to you and the listeners to decide if that is the same, like if actually finishing it off is so much more impressive for a 9 inning no hitter that that makes up for not finishing off what starts as a perfect game, but isn't finished as one, but those are the numbers for you. So basically it's just a lot harder to be perfect than it is to not allow any hits, which is probably not news, but maybe it's somewhat surprising just the magnitude of the difference. Yeah, it strikes me as surprising, I really thought it was gonna do it. And then a lot of people tweeted at me that this means the Mariners aren't going to the pro season because I confess to my one bit of like really intense superstition so I don't know if you'll nervous. I feel, yeah. But see, I gotta get over it because I can't sit here and say the cursive Felix, what does that mean? I feel it silly. Yeah, I would feel cursed the marriage or something. It's tenure, maybe in the happiest possible way, but I'm sure he wishes no ill on that franchise. I'm sure he wouldn't want to continue to deprive Mariners fans of playoff appearances just because he was deprived of them. Yeah, I would be surprised. He seems like he wouldn't be vindictive like that. Right. And the other thing in that genre, I don't know whether you saw the fun fact on Friday, I believe it was from Tim britton, who covers the mets for the athletic. And by the way, the mets just called up one of their tap prospects. I did. Yeah. We need to petition to change the pronunciation of the name, I think, because Brett Beatty spelled BAT Y really, if you are a position playing game. You want it to be batty? Yeah, come on. Why is something else? And maybe you wouldn't want that to be your pronunciation. But no, can we go with baddie if you're at that player? If you're a Batman, you are the bathman. But baddie can mean like crazy. No, yeah. But if you were a baseball player, that doesn't mean that. I'm just saying, that's my one note for Brett Beatty. Yeah, you should, I mean, I think that you should call his mom and be like, probably the first person who has ever suggested. Yeah, excuse you.

"Betting network always on Twitter at Scott's on air SCO at TTS Owen. What a weekend it was in Major League Baseball concluded with Sunday Night baseball, the Yankees and the Red Sox playing a game in two hours and 15 minutes where the Red Sox beat the Yankees three nothing and The Bronx bombers are really, really struggling right now. Since the all star break, the Yankees I believe are what is it 8 and 15? Something like that. It is a very bad record. Yeah, 8 and 15 since the all star break. That's just not winning baseball. And if you look at the Yankees schedule of those 8 wins in the second half of the season, three of them were against Kansas City. Two of them were against the Orioles, and yet not too shabby against the Orioles. They had one win, a two wins against Seattle. And one win here against the Red Sox. They have their two and one, two, three, four, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, there are three and 11. In their last 14 games, yet this team continues to go out and be favorites night in and night out. And here on Monday, they will be favored once again when Garrett Cole takes the mound against an unknown pitcher. We don't know who's going to start for the Tampa Bay Rays. Speaking of the race, drew Rasmussen had a perfect game going into the 9th inning against the Orioles and on the first pitch of the 9th inning. It's the final three outs are always the hardest to get, right? On the first pitch of the 9th inning, he gives up a double Jorge Mateo, gets the double down the left field line, and Matteo scored on a wild pitch, final score of the game, the raised win four to one, still a tremendous pitching performance. People were speculating, this could have been one of the lowest pitch counts in a perfect game or no hitter because he had gone into the 9th. I want to say it was like 70 6 or 70, 76, 79 pitches or something like that going into the 9th inning. So imagine he got out of that unscathed, it would have been really something. He threw 87 pitches total in the game 8 and one thirds innings pitched with the one hit, one run, no walks, 7 strikeouts. So the rays have not announced a starting pitcher yet for this game coming up here on Monday at the trap. What we do know is what is scheduled and this could all change. But the schedule of pictures for their next several starts throughout the rotation throughout the rotation, it's going to be Jeffrey springs on Tuesday, Corey Kluber on Wednesday, Shane mcclanahan on Thursday, and then Rasmussen will start again on Friday. So if you're just looking at like the last time that they went through this rotation, what it could mean if let me just go back. I mean, let's see. You could have, it could just do an opener. This could be a bullpen day. It could be, it could be Jacob bonus, Brian Yarborough, that could be the type of game that we're getting here from the Tampa rays. For Jimmy Jacob bonus, the last time he pitched was on Saturday, he threw an inning. So he threw on through Friday and Saturday. They want him to throw one inning and open this game. Here on Monday, probably not. So maybe it is Ryan Yarborough. I don't know. I'm curious. I'm just as curious as the next guy because I want to know what the odds are going to be on this game. I think the rays could actually be a play. You know, we talk about fading the teams coming off of Sunday Night baseball all the time. Now the one benefit I guess that you can say the Yankees had is that the game was so quick, they didn't do anything. The Yankees had two hits, they had two hits, the game lasted two hours and 15 minutes, then they hop on their flight and go from Boston down to Tampa. It's not a difficult travel. And we all know, you know, the Yankees in Tampa, it's their second home, right? That's like the, you know, their home away from home. Because that's where their spring training site is and all that stuff. And it's always Yankee fans down at the drop, so comfortable playing there. This season, let's see if we have what they have done this season. Having played Tampa since let's see in the first half, they went one two two and two in their first series in Tampa. And then two in one in their second series in Tampa. So four and three in the 7 games in Tampa so far this season for the Yankees. Garrett Cole on the hill is going to command the high price with the Yankees being 8 and 15 since the all star break. Three and 11 in their last 14 starts. And fading the team coming off of Sunday Night baseball, perhaps the Tampa Bay Rays are worth a look and it's hard to say that because we don't know who they're starting pitcher is. I just assume it's going to be a bullpen day and for a Yankee team that managed only two hits here on Sunday Night. And the lineup, I don't know if it's getting healthier. If they're going to get Giancarlo Stanton back, you know, you had Andrew been in ten D lead off. They're without DJ le mayhew now. So little banged up here the New York Yankees. Padres took care of business here on Sunday after a tough loss on Saturday. They are award now is they will go from D.C. to Miami to take on the Marlins and the Marlins will throw the national league favorite to win the Cy Young award in sandy Alcantara. Alcantara ten and 5 this year with a 2.01 ERA and he is such an overwhelming favorite right now. If you look at the numbers, sandy is minus two 60. To win the national league Cy Young, the next favorite is max freed who's at plus 8 50. Now, these numbers don't make sense at all. But I'll contrast numbers this season. He's got a 2.01 ERA, a 2.84 5th, he has struck out now, let's see. I mean, it's numbers are just, he's so good. I'll contrast got a 145

"Let him go ahead and finish this up. But I tell you that it shows you, again, I think you nailed it with the kind of look at no hitters versus perfect games. And that no hitters. We see one that we see the combined no no a lot. Yes. That's happening again this year. And then that's just not sexy. I know. I'm sorry. And I get it. I understand. And it's logical. Yes, I understand why. But it doesn't give you, it doesn't thrill you at all. No, and then what it does is it takes away a great storyline from Major League Baseball. And they need more great storylines. And I get it in April in May, and they're like, we can't do it 'cause it's so early. You want to roll out the arms. Sometimes you want history. I mean, Johan Santana is the only metropolitan pitcher to throw a no hitter. Yes. Hey, blue's arm out. But the bottom line is but it's okay because we got what we wanted. We would remember that he's the only guy to do it for the mets, right? So it's like kind of one what would you rather have? He's going to go down in history in Mexico. He's only got to do it. But if he hadn't done it, would that have put more years in his career? I don't know, but that's what we attributed to. Boil them out, that no hitter. Right. So I don't know that we can just say quantitatively that if he throws X amount of pitches your arm's gonna fall off. Yeah, 'cause no one Ryan, who at what 7 no hitters? I know. Where are the old school when bob Gibson is like, yeah, I'm finishing the game, you know? Took me back in the dugout. I'm gonna finish this thing. So please, I give the raise credit for trying to get this done. Drew Rasmussen though a run does come in here. So does not get the Greg Maddux shutout. The vintage. Remember the Greg Maddux shutout, you know, 99 pitches or less. He would always get that because he was so good with the location location location. Yeah, that was a wild pitch. Yeah, pitching to former ray Brett Phillips, who was traded at the deadline to the Orioles, and Orioles looked like they're going to go down today, but they were a team at the deadline when they traded Trey Mancini. I'm like, why? And they traded it to play out? And they traded their closers. It's like, go for it therapy to angelos, and Trey Mancini, by the way, sitting on the bench for dusty baker. In Houston, it's like you acquired the guy, you know, give him some AB's, but nevertheless, this is a win the raised need, the rays of 59 and 53, the Orioles 59 and 54. So wild card battle going on, certainly with these teams right in the crux of it. And a quick update in the golf, Tony finau just birdied 16. He's at 12 under two off the lead of will's Al tours, who's teeing off on 12. Tony finau might be the hottest player right now on the PGA. He is the hottest player right now in the future. Yeah, he's certainly is as will's a lot of tourists, by the way, his tee shot on 12. Left looks like I think it stays in the shorter grass, but it is to the left of the cart path, so will's a lot Taurus now goes to a minus one 65 is minus one two 50 or two 50 a couple minutes ago. Plus three 50 on straka, ten to one on Brian harman 12 to one on Lucas Glover. Harmon now to 13 under through 16

"Over time. And it's not like those odds can't be correct. You know, those aren't those aren't necessarily incorrect. But they definitely do kind of raise, let's think about this one more radar a little bit. Yeah. Yeah, I'll give a few examples here because I think people probably have not been paying as close attention to these things. I would assume and hope for their sake, but just a few that stood out to me and that I had shared with in venue weeks ago in some cases, you know, there was a White Sox rays game, second inning, a way Jimenez was batting against drew Rasmussen, so this is a right on right matchup and when the plate appearance started, there was a 52.7% reach probability and or I guess that was with a one one count maybe, and I was kind of like, wow, because lay him in as his career on base after one one is under 300, you know, he's not exactly Ted Williams and this is right on rate, then he takes a ball, it's two one, his reach base probability falls to 28.8%. And again, in real life, on two one, his OPP is 80 points higher. It doesn't go down. So that's the kind of thing that drew my attention or force inning of a cardinal's reds game TJ friedel, a left handed hitter, had a 61% chance to reach basic against a left handed pitcher with a one one count, and no offense to TJ friedel, but he's not peak Barry bronze, and I don't think even peak Barry bands had a chance that high against the lefty, probably, so then he took a ball and his probability of reaching fell to 29%. So that seemed kind of thing, like even in that game Corey Dickerson was batting for the Cardinals. He had a 41% chance to reach base with a three O count, okay. Sounds possible, but then he takes a strike and his probability of reaching almost doubles to 83%, which is like, so again, this is going back a bit, and I think that kind of thing, which is maybe more glaring they've cut back on that somehow, but even in more recent games, I'm still seeing that sort of thing. I think a late April game, maybe it was. There was a Yankees game, Giancarlo Stanton came up in the first inning. He had a 36% reach base probability before the first pitch. Fine. Then he takes a ball. No, not at all, but then he takes a ball and that falls to 30%. He takes another ball and it falls to 28%, so he's up two O, but his chances of reaching base have fallen since the plate appearance started and then he swings and misses and suddenly has reached base probability goes way up to 47%. And then he falls off the ball and it goes down to 24%, and it's just like, it can't move in both of those directions. I don't think saying it can't. It hens not to. Right. But I think that one thing that is important to be careful about in these things is you should, you should do the math. Yeah. Yeah. Like I'll give you an example on that semi net bad. And then you actually outperformed very slightly actually underperformed very slightly. I just looked at it again. And it was quite close. Actually, did about the same as the naive count based modeled in both prior scoring gambling because they got it right on zero zero. They were traded the right way. Then there were some counterintuitive counts and they did worse on those because of the count was going up while he was taking strikes. And so that didn't do well for the fact that he ended up striking out. And then they, again, shaded him lower than the league average on two two counts, and that worked out again. You can get an okay overall result, even with some of these like, oh, that's kind of a strange direction to tick in if your initial kind of prediction was pretty good. Right. And now, in that game as a whole, the two models did almost exactly the same, but I guess my point is, it's really tough to just look at examples and say, oh, this can't be right. This has to be wrong. That's one of the things that is so interesting to me about this is it really is tough to evaluate these models and you kind of want it to be telling you counterintuitive stuff. Right. Yeah, exactly. It's like the Bill James that I think it's often a trade. Yeah, the 80 20, you know, any useful stat should surprise you 20% of the time or else, what's the point? So, but if it's surprising, you 80% of the time then maybe something's wrong. So there was another case like Darren ruff was facing Aaron Sanchez in one of these Apple games. He came up in the 5th and he had a 39% reach probability, which kind of caught my eye because in the third inning, same batter pitcher matchup, ruff started with a 28% reach probability so it went from 28% to 39% in the next plate appearance. Now, okay, it's maybe he's facing him again. And so rough has a better chance of getting on base. But a 40% increase seemed like a lot to me, but then it goes from 39% to start that plate appearance to 24% after he takes a first pitch ball. Then he fouls a pitch off and it goes to 32%. He takes it called strike and it goes to 27%. So with a one two count, he had a higher chance of reaching base than he did with a one zero count like that kind of thing. One thing is if you keep making predictions like that and they aren't borne out by the data, then eventually we'll just see it because you won't do as well at predicting those counts in the long run. But it is more important I feel like to get the initial batter pitcher matchup right always than the direction things go. Like the second one is a great example where, you know, yeah, the movements were kind of weird, but by just shading right in the first place, they more than made up for that. And I think that's one of the things that is so interesting and promising to me about this kind of idea. And I mean, I am not a data scientist. I am not someone who is well versed in machine learning. Dabbled in it for some of my data driven hitter predictions this year, but not fancy models like this. I'm just using off the shelf stuff you can put in python. It's a little bit easier. Kind of some of the unavoidable fact of life with this is that it's going to be black box ish. Right. If you're running a bunch of different models and having the computer decide which of those is the best, and then using its outputs, if it works, we will probably think something weird is happening a lot of the time. Yeah, right. That's the thing. Yeah. That Jorge soler probability that I mentioned where he goes from 1% to 2% to Homer 19. Yeah, to 3% after the first ball to 19% after the second ball, now, you know, that confused me because a, how does it go up one percentage point after one ball? And then it goes up from three to 19 after one additional ball, but also just anyone having a 19% chance to Homer in a plate appearance even starting up two O like Barry Bonds that year he set the record P homered in fewer than 7% of the plate appearances that he started up two O and so did mark McGuire the year he hit 70 now granted those guys walked all the time, but still 19% is astronomical now. I bet you that, well, I can tell you that in all of the recorded data that we have this year, there have been no 19% home run percentages. So that's kind of aiming at a past target..

"Sure I wouldn't take to hot out. Like, shut the fuck up, Priscilla. Yeah, that's true. It was a three bed race for a while. It was a rod was better than all of them if we're being honest. I always took him off the table. I mean, his stats were like 20% better than everybody else. That was the best part with the Yankees got him, and they had moved to the third base. It was funny. That was the beginning of some real awareness on some of the defensive metrics, and they were like, the Yankees are putting the guy who's amazing at third base while because Jeter had that ridiculous left to right and then launch himself throw it to first. And so everybody would be like, oh my God, this guy's the best. And then every metric came out and they were like, actually, cheaters incredibly overrated. So I don't know. It's funny how stats. I mean, this is a much bigger topic. We could go for an hour on this, but I don't know that stats have made us smarter in everything. You know what I mean? And it definitely will lead to the MVP stuff we talk about a little bit later because there's almost always ways to counter all of this stuff. But the Jeter stuff was, yeah, 'cause then I think they also had a thing where it was like, yeah, if you actually look at this clutch numbers or that, I've showed it to anybody else. And it's like, yeah, but am I allowed with two strikes to be scared, shitless of them? Am I allowed to know that he's going to just dribble one down the right field fucking line and end up on second base point and back at the dugout? Am I allowed to believe that exists because it feels like it does? Can you change what happens to my blood flow when cheaters up with two outs? I'm just more nervous. I'm sorry. I don't care what the stats are. I feel like he's poking over the second baseman's head. Exactly. And he's going to knock the dude home and I don't care what the stats are. And I shared when it came up. I still remember that day playoff game against Pedro, where Pedro, you know, they had a better attack against Pedro, because they faced him a million times. The same way the Red Sox lineup were a little bit more comfortable with Mariano because they faced him a million times and all those spots. It makes sense. And I'll just never forget that driller down the right field line. I was like, barely fucking hit that. I do level out of the baseball stats because I'm still in that AL auction league. And there's some really good ones that help try to determine, especially like when you get to 5th and X fip and how long a pitcher was. Who are you on? Who are you on this show? I just have my draft. I'm thinking about doing a two hour special stand-alone issue release pod where I just recap my entire draft of my strategy through all 26 rounds. Four hours. First of all, I think you should absolutely do that. I would listen to all two hours. I think the most fascinating thing that's happened with baseball is what happened to the pitchers where and we saw it this year in my auction draft for the first time. The pitcher money was just way lower than the hitter money. And there was too much all of a sudden the hitters became way prioritized about halfway through the draft and all of a sudden I'm spending $13 on Tyler wade. And shit like that. And you're just going, what just happened? And trying to figure out who are starters that you'd want to spend more than like 15 bucks on because nobody look at what happened this weekend. Everybody was pitching like four innings. You know, and the old days you'd want like the $30 starter if you're trying to win. You know, or you'd want the two $22 starters. Now it's like, all right, if I get drew Rasmussen and he can throw a 135 innings for me for, you know, ten bucks, isn't that probably the best use of that ten bucks? Over like I spent 32 on coal and then he has like a forearm injury and he's out for 8 weeks and then I'm completely screwed. So we were all trying to navigate and then on top of it, we were talking closer before we went on. You know, you get a closer and there's a new closer a week later. All of a sudden it's like, who's second rider? That guy's the closer now what happened? I paid for this other guy. So it's just like, it's complete chaos. I used to keep track of closer depth charts, like I was big into it, right? And now I went into my draft and I go, I'm taking one guy that I know I can pencil in for like 30 plus saves. I'll take the one guy earlier than maybe everybody else does. Yeah. And at least I know I have one, but to back in the day, I used to go, I don't want to be chasing saves all fucking season. It's the worst feeling when there's no options. And now I'm like, whatever. There's 20 guys that are getting saves that aren't even drafted. So I'll figure it out. And you can get in the age in auction. You can get like a $4 reliever and all of a sudden that guy has 25 saves at the end of the year. I mean, we're going to talk about the NBA stuff.

"It's all guesswork and trying to just have the right intentions and try to be conservative, but we had mcclanahan debut in the playoffs in 2020 and then like one way or another kind of needed a full season out of them and our goal was to have a 7 month full season, so he was pitching in the playoffs and you know we got pretty aggressive with drew Rasmussen and we had balls on the playoffs, like, you know, if Chris archer had been healthier, he would have taken some of those innings and we gave a bunch of those enhance to rich hill in the first half. So there was stuff we did to try to build out the length depth, but I don't think it was anything that every team wasn't already thinking about. Was there any inter team collaboration around the injury question going into the year? 'cause I imagine that, you know, you're gonna stress that as a competitive advantage, but also there is something to be gained from a wisdom of a crowd in respect to injury prevention. I don't know if I can answer that. Not a great secret thing, but I don't know if I know enough to answer that. I'm sure the trainers the medical staffs that they communicate amongst themselves pretty often, but I don't know how much of that trickle to whatever my level is. Sure, fair enough. I feel like I'd be remiss if I didn't give you an open platform to sing an ode to wander Franco. Would you like to sing a song if you don't, would you like to say some nice words about him instead? I don't have any lyrics prepared, but like he's really good, right? Yeah. There is a strip in spring training of 2021, which is this year still. He struck it. I don't know, like, 6 times. In spring training, but just because it's one different going because one of the things is like he makes a ton of contact. I remember, like he hit this big home run I went over like the offices in Port Charlotte and it made the rounds. It went viral because it's wonderful. When you hit a big giant home run you're like these 20 years old, they hit that home run. And then he also had these strikes. You're like, oh, because you just kind of get it in your head. Like even though you know, if you step back, you know, he's a very good player. You know what the stable skills are. You seems right there a few times in spring training, you're like, something doesn't seem right. And at the start, when he came up to the majors, debuting against Boston, which was a fun change of pace because it happened right after our swept in four games in Seattle, which was a low point of my season, but then he came up and he was great, but after that first game against Boston, he took a little time to define his footing, and he wasn't really like tearing the cover off the ball to say nothing of how difficult an environment it was for rookie hitters. Yeah. This year because it's hard to do. But by the time the oster break in August world, he basically stopped striking out at all. I think he went, what was it like 40 or 50 plate appearances without us right out? And this is, this is us. Like we're a team that strikes out some. Yeah. Famously. It's a very different feeling kind of a bet. And I don't need to tell you one because everybody knows Franco is good, but the defense kind of exceeded my own expectations, the energy is just so infectious like everybody can see this. This isn't like team insight. You can tell. Right. This kid is obviously special. Anyone who you read about him in the minors, if you're a fan or a straight or whatever, but you haven't really seen him yet. Welcome to the majors. And you get it immediately. Like it shines through without any question. And he's not even he's not even as good as he's likely to be. Right. Which is, it's great. Yeah. One of the things you kind of struggle with Brandon Lau got off to a bit of a slow start this past season, right? And he wound up hitting like a million home runs and drawing me in a million runners like great season by Brandon Lau. But you think back like we had a lot of people struggling in the playoffs last year, and then this season gets started and you're like, I don't know, the numbers aren't really there yet. And one of the biggest adjustments in I guess you didn't ask about this directly, but indirectly. One of the biggest adjustments this year, working for a team, relative to the year before, there was a hundred more games here. And I can't speak for everyone, but I kind of forgot what a full season feels like. Yeah. And so emotionally, like it was hard when you have guys struggling at the start of the season to remember like, oh, there's like a lot of time though. That's a normalized. So like, you know, I became irrationally concerned about one or 5.4 because he wasn't hitting 300. I became irrationally concerned about Brandon Lauer first because he wasn't hitting whatever. And he turns around. He's like one of the best hitters in the major leagues a lot of months of the year. It's just like, oh right, I forgot that this season finds its level if you get a time. Yeah, you don't have to, if 15 games are sort of a slump, you don't have to really worry about it because that's not a quarter of your season. You know, guys can just sort of adjust and be on their way and look really good. It's funny, obviously the stakes on the public side for this sort of thing are very, very different than they are. On the team side, but I don't know. You want good baseball players to play good baseball and sort of dazzle us with that because it's way more fun to watch guys who are succeeding than guys who are struggling, we feel bad about that. We're like, you know, it pokes at our tender feelings. But when you have a guy who's been aided, you're like, could you be good, please? It would be really nice if you could be good because we've said that you'll be very, very good. So can you do that and then wander was like, yeah, I got you. That's fine. And then you didn't say those words, but he communicated that test with his play in a way that I felt really good about. I mean, it's crazy. This all kind of goes without saying, but everybody knew how special wonderful it was. But of course, what that means is wander Franco knows how special ever went expects him to be. And that can be like motivating whatever, but I crumble if I get forward text messages like within 20 minutes because I can't handle any pressure. To be able to do that at that age..

"I don't think there's anything even really talk about here, but before we dive in, I'll obviously ask you how you feel as well. We can talk it out. We can add the debate. But Lance mccullers junior sounded like somebody who's gonna pitch in this series after Tuesday's game four. To be fair. But he was scratched with forearm tightness. He's the Astros best pitcher at this moment without him, the Red Sox road to the 2021 World Series could be through Shane bars, drew Rasmussen, Colin McHugh, Jose or kitty, Jose Garcia, framber Valdez, a Christian Javier Zach Greinke hybrid. What the fuck is that? It's insane. It's absolutely, and the way that Greinke's last month of the season unfolded. He was on the cover of all he came back and made two starts, then went back on the IO and then was only able to throw a bullpen ses because it was the end of the year. So he's probably not going to be able to fill him into the rotation. And if he does, I don't see him going like four inning seems like his max at this point. So the Red Sox if the colors is out, the updates don't sound bad. I think the coaching staff weighed in on it yesterday and think that he should be fine. But getting a forearm tightness to diagnosis right before the ALCS is supposed to begin on Friday is just classic bullshit Red Sox look. And this is why this team pisses me off because like we talked like I talked about on the last episode, hilarious. Absolutely fucking hilarious how the Yankees run into the race. Look, the Yankees should have got the job done against the rays last year. I'm not making any excuses. Blake snells on that good. But no, but they had Blake's now. They had Charlie Morton. They had Tyler glass now. I know they battered Tyler glass now. I know they they handle Blake Snell too at some point. But that was and then the race had a beast bullpen that year too. So if you have pictures that can actually give you length and then you have a bullpen behind it, that's worth something. That can at least be competitive. The Yankees when faced with competitive situations usually lie down. So the Yankees get that version of the raise. And then the Red Sox get this version of the raise, which, yeah, a 120 very good, but starting rookies in games one and two, and then a hybrid pitcher and game three and then Colin McHugh and other hybrid pitcher in game four, like give me a break. I'm never gonna forgive Brandon Lau, either. Like we can't over 18 but 9 strikeouts in the LDS and he beat the shit out of us with three home runs in like ten RBIs in the final fucking series of the season. This is what we're complaining about. The Red Sox are not as good as the raised, but the Red Sox didn't get the raise. They got Brandon low getting no hits in a four game series..

"Patino who they got for Blake Snell haven't seen him yet. Brendan McKay, remember him like the third overall pick lefty came up in 2019. He's not here. Obviously, Blake Snell is not here. He was traded to San Diego, but he was a part of the race. He was thinking about Tyler glass now. Injured, not playing. Brent, Honeywell, who destroyed us this year and was the number one pitching prospect in baseball like two years ago before all his arm surgeries. He's not here. They're doing it with mcclanahan, baz and drew Rasmussen. That's who's starting games one, two and three, and in the first of the three games, the raise just eviscerated the Boston Rhett made us look foolish like three days ago. So but it's not over, Chris sale pitches, Nathan of Audie pitches. The series could easily get more competitive. But the first game was a complete walkover. And yeah, it was rookie Shane mcclanahan and David Robertson and JP fire Ryzen two former Yankees at the end of the bullpen. The rage just picked up for shits and gigs. They're like, David Robertson's coming back from the Olympics. Great. Bring him in. JP fire Ryzen? Who was cut off the Yankees 40 man so they could protect Brooks kristy, I guess? Great. He's gonna go the final two innings. There are stadium as a joke. I hope they split time in Montreal, moving forward, but you can't deny that the players on the field really wanted that last night. And they were without like four quality arms. Like when you think of the raise, the arms you think of, they're not even there. They're not even pitching. Shane mcclanahan Shane baz and drew Rasmussen. If you didn't watch to raise game between August and now, you wouldn't know those people existed. And that's the one two three for a team that looked completely playoff ready. That's why people want to emulate the rays. Not because of their wage suppression. Because of their just the overload of pitching. And in case you didn't notice, Yankee fans are all we're excited. We're all high mighty that are minor league system was great this year. Like they want it every level, and that's wonderful. The raise made the playoffs or won the championship at every level of the minor leagues this year in 100 games in the major leagues. So Jesus Christ, the only negative thing you can say about the raise is that BJ Upton called them out for their arbitration practice last night during the game, which is really funny. And I hope he continues to do that. BJ Upton's cool. Quick quiz, you know, the BJ stands for and BJ Upton. Boss man junior. Boss man junior, not a real name. Bossman junior and that guy's awesome. So I hope he keeps putting the rays on blasts 'cause right now that's all I have. It's like, you know, sometimes you revel in your rival suffering..

"The pitcher and you tell me whether or not you're super interested in starting this week jon means versus the yankees and then at boston been very kind of uneven. Recently in terms of you know whether it's giving you a good start or bad start orioles and not in contention. So maybe they let him go. So jon means you your own this week. No i definitely that those are those are tough matchups for him. And let's not forget if you're if you're trying to get wins that bullpens not. I mean they gave up eleven runs in the seventh inning yesterday. Yeah they were winning two to one going into the seventh in a header and lost eleven to two. it's unbelievable how bad that bullpen is. No i don't let means as not been the same guy since he's come back off the i l. and the rules have changed He's got flashes where he's good but then he gets into trouble and the bullpen. Just dumps gas all over the situation and things blow up so no. I don't want this one can be a reliever. Yeah i'm with you on that. I think i'd rather go really especially matchups. Both these teams competing for playoff spots Neither neither place. Boston baltimore great place to pitch anyways so All right i'm gonna. How do you pronounce it. Lewis is not going to say. I'm gonna say he'll is the at least he'll docks. I know it's not louise scale lucille yankees pitcher up. Both home starts but Verses minnesota in verses cleveland not great matchups. either minnesota's their records bad but their lineups. Not it's not their lineups problem And so that's a tough badge up in cleveland. I it's been hit or miss. Obviously they didn't hit anything last night. But this is a neutral matchup. This'll be another one. That i would look for reliever over it because even heels not going deep in the game himself For that and yeah. He's got some really nice stuff on the strike. Outs could could be there. But he's had his issue so a. I'll take a reliever Over putting in my line lineup this week. Yeah that's a tough one. Because i actually i like these or i like these matchups for him. The i know you said the lineups aren't bad but they're not good either I don't love that. it's home mondays. Concern is like you said the last two starts. He's gone three and a third in foreign two-thirds and while he's been pretty good Most of the season one forty two a in his four start so far I just don't know that he's going to get an opportunity to win And go deep enough for win. So i think i would likely role with reliever instead. Honestly so Yeah what about drew rasmussen He's at toronto. Bad matchup vs detroit. Okay match up our would you rule with rasmussen don. I'll take a relief for here as well i mean. Toronto is on fire They're they're matched. their lineup is just a match up. nightmare ender. This game would be in roger center for this. And then he restless Get the outing against detroit. Back home Which should which is obviously the more attractive match up of the two. But it's not a no gimme him. he'd we've we. I know paul's talked about it on this. That for that horrid start detroit's been pretty good They've been above five hundred team after that. What eight and nineteen start Something like that but the toronto matchup could be problematic or beasley is problematic. Because with one of the things that's made that's made rasp us some really good Is he just attacked the strike zone. Like he's not out there to say. I need you to chase the shapes He's been for a guy that come. That has come out of the bullpen. I've i've really enjoyed watching him pitch because he's been very For the most part extremely pitch efficient like pitch counts per per inning have been like fourteen to sixteen And which is unusual for a guy that's essentially a toupee guy but he's been working in the third pitch and he's been really working to strike since i've been impressed with his growth in in season. It's maybe feel better about trading willie adamas It the trade had to be obviously with with franklin. The what he's done it. It's it you had to. You had to do something there But it's been impressive to see what restless because he probably gonna be in the rotation next year The way he's had this growth but these aren't great mad at toronto matchup could get really ugly in a hurry And then as i'm saying this watch he'll go and shut them down but they're red hot in i. If i can find a reliever this would be one of those ones. Where if i'm worried about protecting my ratios. I find another option. Yeah i i'm with you. I'm not. I'm not test in toronto at all. Just i mean unless it's a stud unhugged gonna. I'm not gonna play that matchup. So what about erin. Savelli at minnesota and then at the yankees. He threw four and two-thirds in his first start off the i l. Which hopefully means he can go a little bit far along and be eligible for wins yet in trust me. This isn't gonna be a whole list. Where i go through and say the reliever demeaned reliever committee reliever but this is kind of one of the other ones where i'm like. I i think. I want reliever i like. I said minnesota They can still put hurt on you at times. polanco's hitting the ball incredibly. Well right now. They're they're healthy for the most part And there's a lot of familiar. Never say that word familiarity with savelli and so that could be a tough match up. And then with the yankees the yeah. They've lost eight straight by getting back to when want thirteen straight. They were hitting the crap out of the ball now that they've lost eight straight. They're not hitting the ball while the real yankees team is somewhere in the middle and they're gonna start hitting again and it could come against it could and savelli politics gets means as we were saying earlier. But they're going to be better with this there's no way they're gonna keep losing It'll be fun to watch But there's no way they're gonna keep they're gonna continue to lose here with this. So this is a tough match-up. I'm not saying like automatically. Give me the reliever. But i'm lean being like i've got to take a long hard look if i have savelli. At what options do i have for something else. Yeah i think i'm going with civil. He looked really good in that. In that i start back from the i l. Against minnesota strikeouts give up. One earned run on three hits and a walk in foreign two thirds. I think the indians. Oh let him maybe go a little bit deeper so he can be eligible for that win in this next start In the yankees have been a mess and slack you sets at that thirteen game winning streak. So i think i roll with this one Over reliever but i i totally understand going the opposite way on that..
