"Hello it is wednesday november eleventh happy veterans day. Just wanna let everybody know that it doesn't matter if you're for the war or against the wars you have to be pro the warrior and i think that's why veterans day is so important. I take a lot of pride in the work that i've done with the women and men of our military both their families active and vets drake group of humans. I mean honestly been through things that it's very difficult to understand if you haven't been there anybody that's willing to sign a line saying hey i'll do we gotta do to protect this country now. Does that mean that you have to automatically support the wars in the decisions. That are made absolutely not. I'm not saying that is the case whether you do or you don't. That's not for me to judge but the citizens of our country that sign line saying. Hey i'll go do. We gotta do nothing but honor and respect for them. So big. Happy veterans day Feel free to buy a meal coffee gum. Maybe some smokes. Whatever they're looking for in. Just say thank you for those people In an after they get back. The work has just begun really on what's resume simulating. Yeah back into society. And we're very very thankful for vets here and we're very very thankful for you listening if you enjoy the show by the end of it. Got to be a friend telephone. "So who's first? Yeah, No, that's the thing. It would have to be. And across the board thing, and there's you know, like the Knight Commission is in the Drake Group and some other people who are kind of college athletics watchdogs. Have been Pushing for Basically and double a rule limiting compensation, and that's what it would take because you're you're right. Nobody wants to step up and be first and then it was a little bit there. They're not competitive. There don't want to be big time. You don't want to go to school there. They're not big time. You don't want to work there because they're not big time. So that's all this basically boils down to is like I didn't say that. The entirety of how everything is run is based on recruiting like everything is based on football recruiting. If Yu, why do we need a waterfall in the football? Officer. Why do we have a miniature golf course at the football facility at Clemson Recruiting. It's all we have to look like we are the most ridiculously opulent place in the world. And it's just it's completely out of perspective. They have microchips in the shoulder pads to measure what effort you're giving throughout the practice. It's it's ridiculously dumb. You never won a game by knowing that Jimmy only gave 76% Tuesday practice. It's ridiculous. Now, let's let's play the tape out. ESPN is drowning in debt. We all know that they have fired hundreds of people. In the last couple of years. People have cut the cord, and now they're there. They're talking about reducing some of their footprint. The SEC. How many conferences air tied like a big tennis separate right cause that pick 10 network is is a cable thing, and and they don't. They're not. They're not beholden to ESPN. But the other one's SEC pays these teams $52 million a year. Something crazy when that if we play the tape out, When is that bubble burst? That's a great question. And yes, I mean, the big concern is the big 10 network is 51% fox 49% Victim Conference. Ah, and their Maura of a fox quote unquote conference that they can't but they do have Certainly have agreements with ESPN as well. But yet I don't know, man. That's that's a really good questions. I mean, I think a lot of people watching and saying the media rights revenue bubble will burst. When Don't know. But things are definitely going the wrong direction because Maria from the standpoint of table subscriptions and things like that, I tend to think People will still find places to put football games on TV and that people will pay for that. And you know whether it's You know Netflix, Hu Lu Facebook live. Whatever the platform is that people will have football on where they can watch it and people will be charged for watching it and people will pay it. But we'll see. I mean, that's you know, Basically, I had an athletic director. Tell me guys back in April, I guess when all this stuff was blowing up You know? Yeah, We spent our budget for best case scenario, because that's all we've ever known. We have never had to go the other way. And now that's the biggest existential crisis like, Oh, my God, We're not just printing money anymore, but we may have to actually think about this. But the easiest way is not actually look and say football we had We need you to cut back a little. You know what? Get rid of the rowing team. Get rid of gymnastics team get rid of the tennis team. We're getting to the point where you're gonna look at college basketball players and say they weren't born when the FBI investigation into college basketball started, and folks that Louisville are saying why just us? Oklahoma State's Why just us while the other shoe dropped for Arizona, we'll see what happens with them. What has this? Stop cheating it all. I bet you it hasn't. No, I wrote about it this week. As a matter of fact, you know that people say right now in the SEC is worse than it's been maybe ever been, and then force them. Well, then it was in 2017. When people started getting busted for this, Ah, No, I think that the the frustration is as reached a peak level because, like in that league you're watching. Will Wade right now has gotten but recruiting class and he's probably going to sign next month. Ah, Jabbari Smith, National Top five guy goes to Auburn, which has been under investigation since day one without penalty Yet I won't even tell anybody what's in their notice of allegations. Alabama's under investigation and got a top 15 dying. So you know, I think, Yeah, they be frustration is out there because not only You know these schools getting players, but it just hadn't stopped. Anything. Business is still being done. If you ask around the way it was before then, if anything, dollar figures have gone up, I mean, I spent a half hour on the phone yesterday. The coach was detail ing me like that. It's 200,000 that kid's 300 Beckett was 2 50. But then they went back and asked for more and you get money. When you commit. You get money when your sign and you get money When you feel up. It's like a three stage payment process. So It's not going away prepared. I think there's also look remember, we I lost. We lost our minds when we thought Ah, you know, 10 years ago that a player that went to Kentucky took his math classes in wrong order. And we lost our minds. We were calling Kentucky Memphis and they're just cheating, and this is ridiculous, and people were upset about it. Now people would laugh at that. I think there's also been a shift with the fans. That they don't care anymore like they don't that if you you know the cam Newton's of the world, you know, Charles Barkley comes out and goes best $200,000 we ever spent. It is, to a certain extent, there's been a shift with the fans. Where they wouldn't tolerate. Now. I think there's also percentage of fans that have bailed on it. You know that. I've said this isn't what I what kind of wanted. If I want to watch pro sports, I would watch the NFL in the NBA. But there has been a shift with the fans, right? I mean to wear, you know, Remember, we lost our minds. If a kid is transcript was wrong, And now that would sort of be a joke If you wrote that story a day. Yeah. I mean, there's no doubt that people care less unless about Whatever Go whatever goes into the sausage making rights, right? They just want the sausage. They don't want to know how right on And if you try to tell him how the answer is, basically, we don't care what our fingers in our ears were generalized. We don't care. We just want to see the product and Well, I can understand that. I don't like First of all, I am fine with players getting paid, and that's one thing like I've changed my tune on that, to a large degree just because I've seen The amount of money But is it state?.

"Are miserable Arrowhead Stadium Zero. Okay any raiders wide receiver at Kansas City in the chiefs give up the fewest fantasy points to wide receiver somehow. two point five Renfro. Four for Renfro rugs plays. Two point five for rugs. Rugs plays I'm probably one on both Sammy Watkins against the raiders. Six? Three because Hardman. For To. Kirk cousins. At Seattle. Five. One. Really okay. Well, we pretty much discussed that while. Would you start? Tom Brady tonight jamie or kirk cousins. Brady reluctantly okay. and. You also have jared Goff Garner minhsiu ahead of Kirk cousins and we both start Herbert over cousins, right? Yes Right how about Greg Olsen? Against Minnesota. Three Sure. James White Against Denver. He's I. Think. Three and non PTR. Six and a half and peer. Two and five. Would you start James White NPR over any of the. Bell Drake Group. No. I would start him over Melvin Gordon. Interesting how `Bout Philip Lindsey. How about Harris? First, Damian Harris Against Denver. Non Pr Seven. Six and five. Philip Lindsey No. three in both Juliette omit against. DENVER. To non PR. Five and PR is, camping. I don't know. I don't either. Have you answer that question? Is there any wide receiver you like in this game eshelman Harry Byrd Patrick Judy Gilmore like Patrick Gilmore's out as we expect and. Then we'll see what the quarterback situation is Denver to. Yeah. I I would rank them at Almond big gap hairy Judy Patrick all number four. Okay let's get to the Games Jacksonville at Houston Stat of the game number one. Oh Jamie. Hope that doesn't bother you the Shawn Watson not so good in games against Jacksonville. Seven points. Twenty one points. I won't count as first game because that was first NFL game. He didn't even start but seven, twenty, one, twelve and twenty three fantasy points in his last four games against Jaguars that Maddie at all really not one of the good ones and then obviously wasn't great was the bus game right where he took the bus to the. I don't remember. we have some news. Great what we got. On Pella Soro. Tom Perez Cero. Soro sorry thom another titans player has tested positive for covid nineteen and inconclusive tests from the previous day is also positive. I can't imagine there's any chance that the bills and titans playing. Maybe, I'm wrong but. I. Think this means they can't even open their facility until Saturday at the earliest. Yeah with I. Mean we could be looking at another Monday or Tuesday scenario the Patriots, of also closed their facility and are practicing virtually. The bills play next. Thursday against the chiefs. They're not playing. Here we go what a mess I I just don't understand how they think like I. Think we've reached the point weird like it really sucks for. The titans probably aren't playing as many games this year in the fantasy season as other teams. How how they think they're going to get sixteen games in seventeen weeks just just doesn't see. I. Think the obvious thing is eliminate the week off before the Super Bowl moved the playoffs back when we I it's of maybe have to be more than that. I I guess you know look it seemed pretty dire for baseball. A lot of people thought when the Marlins had their outbreak and then the cardinals not long after that that season was not going to. was going to get shut down and they pulled it off pulled off baseball had the advantage of being able to play doubleheaders. Fault doesn't have that advantage I. Just I thought it was a bishop try to get sixteen games in I. Hope I'm wrong. Happens. All right. Thank you for that news heath. All right. Let's let's start over Jacksonville at Houston whatever Dijon Watson bad history against Jacksonville doesn't matter Jamie that started the week. Jacksonville's defense is much worse than it had been. Of the game number two, this is not going to influence your decision, but it's just nice to know James Robinson has had ninety or more total yards in every game this year that's a hell of a floor and also big development last week they were down big in the fourth quarter and he was on the field they did not take him out for Chris Thompson had high snap count. He had a lot of catch. Enough catches. So every time I feel like there's something to look at doubt James Robinson he comes through he's a start. and. This run defense is arguably the worst in the NFL that he's facing. All right. Let's talk about. Gardner Menchu. You guys both have the top twelve. Dave has sixteenth, which isn't that bad these days. So only issue again is that teams do not throw on. The Texans, the only teams that have seen fewer pass attempts are the two teams have played only three games. So they've seen the fewest pass attempts per game. Does that concern you with Garner Menchu who has been throwing a lot lately? No doesn't concern me. I mean I don't love it because I've seen like that to be in the other direction but. Now. You gotta think about one of those games was against the Ravens Right, which is not going to have a huge pass volume. One of them was against the Vikings we just got illustrated that right? Not a huge past team And then the game plan at least by all indications was, hey, chiefs run on us with your rookie running back making his first NFL game as opposed to I don't know the greatest quarterback playing right now throwing..

"We welcome you back, always a really great pleasure to welcome Dr David. Ridpath, back to the program of Professor at Ohio University the former president of the drake. Group and certainly somebody very outspoken in NCWA matters. Doctorate thank you for the time and I have no earthly idea what I do because we've spoken, but what these last couple of months have been like for someone like you and your students. Just intercollegiate athletics in general as well as a whole world. Well! Paul you're right and thanks for having me on. It's been You know a strange time for for everybody I mean I have two kids in college and wondering still if just from my perspective will be teaching online or Half in person right now. We have a plan as a university that come back at least in some form and fashion on campus, but then you know listening to some of your callers today, and some of your calls, and the the previous few days, especially with the Conference Commissioners I it's really up in the air of where we're GonNa go with college athletics, and and I know this isn't a popular feeling Paul but I'm really more on the air on the side of caution, and that we shouldn't be using the athletes as Guinea pigs and I think that the powers that be right now should at least by more time into at least say a delay like. Like maybe no games to over. I something like that. Instead of really you know listening to chat, glad chuck and others. It seems like we're still kind of full steam ahead for early September Start and I'm just not sure we WANNA do that Paul putting on you know my athletic administrative hat that I used to wear I can understand and I'm very happy. I don't have to make these decisions Paul to be honest with you, but I think we've got to be very very cautious. Because if a player gets very sick or God, forbid one dies then we will shut down for a year and I think it's better that we take it slow and deliberate. In doctorate paths has been a number of schools as a faculty Rep Marshall. He also has worked in the SEC at Mississippi State, so we've seen. He's in college athletics from from all sides. I WANNA. Ask You about the the disconnect we. We saw a couple of weeks ago with the Commissioner. They told us how they were collaborative. And then literally to the shock of everyone else. The big ten made an announcement about conference only then last week we get. mark emirate coming out of his whole and realizing that winter is over and let us know that there is a problem. And everyone seems to be on a different page right now. You've been part of intercollegiate athletics for such a Long Time coaching administratively. I mean. How did we get to this point? Boy You know it's interesting Paul de you. You have know competition collaboration all at the same time, and you see that in sports, obviously and even in the business world, but. With what's going on now at almost seems like it's an every man or woman for themselves and the main focus, and I know it, and it should be a consideration, but the main focus seems to be the money and the business side of it and I do think I again. I am not A. Fan You know that Paul I. Don't have to say this, but. He is a person with zero power that is very true, but he's still has a person that makes three and a half million dollars a year. As Executive Director of President of an association, he should at least be out in front. As a collaborative consensus, building forced to try to get these decisions made consistently across the association, and this is where and I know Tim Brando and others have spoke of it that maybe our were commissioner. I know. Mac Brown mentioned. It is not a bad idea at all, but it just kind of blows my mind. Paul that we have somebody making three and a half million dollars that is essentially doing nothing, and then you have the conference commissioners that have now kind of taken the approach of you know we need to do what we need to do. And each state state government the president. We could go on and on Paul there so many different variables here that you know I it's. It's really chaos, and that's why I think we should. At least set a delay date right now and certainly not take spring off the table for college football. I believe Amer disappearing from Congress tomorrow so I'm sure we'll hear him. say something which. I'm Lisa will be something. It'll be better than what he said so far I have to ask you though because. doctorate. Had You you in these waters? You've been there before. You have commissioners who were dealing with. Leagues like the SEC and states from Texas to Florida to to Carolina. The big twelve expanded I, think goes into several continents. different issues for everyone What do you think's really going on when commissioners meet whether it's in person like Greg Sankey or zoom with everyone like everyone else How do you think these conversations are going? You think athletic directors who are literally banging the table saying we will go under if we don't have football. I think you're probably having that. And I also think at least at the power five Paul. That's a bit of hyperbole I know that just up the road from me at Ohio State. If there's no football played till twenty twenty, one Ohio state is going to be fine Alabama is going to be fine What may happen although not to the extent, people claim is schools like Ohio University Colorado. State and others maybe need to reassess where they are and I think. Jon Steinbrecher alluded to that when. When he talked to you last week. That you know perhaps we need to look at Maybe even power five and I'm saying that's not Steinbrecher, but a power five separation at least in football, and maybe the expensive football for some of these smaller schools. We've reached that tipping point but I do think in these conversations. Paul my worry is, and these are good smart people, and many of them are friends of mine but I do not believe and I think I'm right on this although they may say different. They are not making the decision with the athlete in mind I and I think that's what needs to drive all these decisions. It is being driven by economics, and there's I mean Paul. There's no I. Mean it's very clear. There's a reason why you. And others have Patriot league and others have said that they're going to spring season why we're still hanging on for SEC and power five games, and even group of five games is dollars and cents, and that cannot be the reason in my view. But doctor. You hear people on this program and and I'm not trying to say anybody's right or wrong I don't know as much as we talked about this for four months. But, it does seem like the constituency of these leagues wants to see it happen whether that should be. The overriding factor is of course is not the point but those. Those commissioners are hearing the same thing. We're hearing right here. They, do want it to happen. Paul but I think you know was interesting. Hearing the the athlete talking on your show today and there is a pack twelve consortium of students that is even considering you know making some demands that we've seen it with some of the other schools where students are saying look, we're not gonNA. Do this. WE'RE NOT GONNA sign waivers. Other Things I understand Paul I'm a fan I wanNA see football to. But at the end of the day it's about the athlete and these are. Are College students. These are not employees. We cannot put them in a bubble When students come back to campus, we cannot say that the college athletes cannot go interact with the students. Check glad chuck has a little bit of an advantage because you can do a little more restrictive things at West, point and Annapolis then you can do on a regular college campus so I would say maybe a little of an advantage there, but you know Paul..

"Get back to work we go let's go to Robert in grand prairie thanks for holding yes hello hello and I enjoy your show really have a question yeah I really do I do have a question about the the new corvette I I'm never owned one but courses a lot of hype on it but are the dealers on are they sell them now all of the plan's been closed because of the corona virus okay so and of course if you recall I did the story where they said they're going to run three shifts of the the plan Kentucky where they build him and it's just going to be all out because they've got so much demand for it and yet when they announced the production was like one shift right right and I'm sure it will be a big seller when everything stabilizers but the ones that have gone into dealerships come and go very quickly because they're all spoken for but I can understand them better GM said they have enough orders to run the plant day and night the first year and apparently that was on true okay when these two years to get them they advertise you know very of the base model very modest the dealers of padam okay okay they do they do they ever sale for MSRP or they do they push it up because I have no idea okay okay Thompson see what they're doing okay but that is that's okay I would guess you know it's it's that old deal when the Acura NSX first came out a lot of the actor dealers are charging twenty and thirty thousand over list particularly on the west coast because most dealers don't know how to deal with that clientele he does so they see this big Russian I was there for that the NSX comes out even around here they were selling for ten to fifteen thousand over list right okay but by the end of the first year all the impulse buyers are gone so now they're down the list price therefore by the end of the second year we were negotiating down to virtually nothing to get rid of them because people didn't treat it like a long term viable sports car now when I went to Atlanta with GM and drove the nineteen ninety eight corvette at road Atlanta I was there with the who's who of the automobile writers international and everybody asks what is the greatest more we're asking each other what's great sports car you've ever driven in your life and every person there said the Acura NSX okay so how did Porsche still stay in business with their nine elevens and everything else with every reviewer in the world said the greatest sports car was the NSX and failed for accurate yes hi if he ever does the I don't know what exactly dealers charge twenty thousand over list in the first year irritated a lot of people there my friend okay have a good weekend that's all I had thank you and with that let's go to Chuck in Dallas a truck good afternoon how are you I don't know that's what I say I always say I don't have a clue everybody laughs who's going with you well you were talking about the Beatles yesterday earlier today and I sat there and I was I was talking about hype yeah no no no that's always going to get younger yeah you talk about the bills and all the girls that showed up for their entry and how that was all staged and so reminded me of a book I read that was written in nineteen sixty one by Daniel Forster I don't know if you ever heard of him or not but the subtitle is a guide to see pseudo events in America in the book was written back in a time when the mass media to the radio some degree but but the whole technology was changing any goes in some detail about that in nineteen sixty one explaining how that was going to change how we consumed information the first chapter of his book is called going from news gathering news making and so when you talk about the Beatles and all the girls showed us that there is that yeah that guy wasn't export scheme so when I had my band when I got out of high school we went out to LA because we had a producer with the development dealer capital yeah and the first day bill Silva sat down with us and he said name the four Beatles I only go sure John Paul George Ringo is a great name the five members of the rolling stones and we get we get like for the five right he said name any member of the strawberry alarm clock if it were your last hold on he said you named all four Beatles that's why they're the greatest band in the world you could name most rolling stones that's why they were second the strawberry alarm clock had an undeniable here right and then he said we really don't need your songs because publishing houses are full of number one songs nobody's ever got around to recording we don't voices because the world is full of unemployed opera singers and we don't need your musicianship because our people here in LA they can come into the studio and do your song better on the second take then you guys would do it in a week right so we don't need to hear songs we don't need your voices and we don't need your musicianship if you can deal with that you can have a career in the music business talking about home well first thing we didn't know about the wrecking crew at the time even though I don't I don't really been to Nashville and been fortune enough to get into a couple sessions with Pete Drake's group that did the same thing in Nashville but when he tells you that his deal also okay how do you have a deal music he said because of people like you enough to learn your name they will bite whatever music you make he said if you doubt that Bob Dylan that's right you know he said that that's just the way it is he said you know all four Beatles C. bought every one of their albums you know for the five Rolling Stone so you bought some of the albums if you really like the songs and you didn't even buy the strawberry alarm clocks album because they only had one undeniable hit what what what was that hit it's Donna Donna Donna incense and peppermints nineteen sixty seven that's right of course if your capital folks in early nineteen seventy two with bill Silva you knew that was a hit for the server alarm clock but my point is this yeah in the industry why is John Travolta the star he is today and nobody else off welcome back Kotter made she named because they will tell you while he was doing the show he was constantly borrowing money from everybody else on the show because he was taking his entire paycheck.

"Second ear Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson stole the show during last Sunday's victory over the Patriots. And that's where we're going to start this week I'm joined by the Wall Street. Journal's those Rachel Bachman and by Professor Kenneth Shropshire CEO of the Global Sport Institute at Arizona State University. Welcome back to both of you. Thanks so much Karen Karen. Thanks Karen could it be all right. Can't take away. Your I mentioned is is really. What's been focused on this week? This whole Lamar Jackson. Tom Brady moment and bigger than that. Where are we in terms of the black quarterback? Many people pointed out. This is the fiftieth anniversary of James Shack Harris being drafted into the national football league in nineteen sixty nine and he became the first prominent black quarterback in the national football league. And you know what does it mean. Where are we now and Lamar Jackson was drafted? Some of the same conversations. Were taking place back then. Were taking place with dual threat quarterback not so much the race issue as it was back then but all the coded language there so to see Jackson beat the goat. Tom Brady kind of brought it all to a head and gave. There's another moment to reflect on what it means but also the conversation that's still taking place about athleticism versus thinking quarterback or just a great quarterback without all all the qualifiers that come into play if James Shack Harris was Kinda Onepointoh and we had a period of time where it was two point zero. Where there's there's just weren't that many now this season? We have the largest number of black quarterbacks that we've had since two thousand thirteen were tied for that number. Are we in kind of a a a three point zero moment. And how do we get a four point. Oh where we don't have a conversation at all or we can have the Jackson versus Brady bill the dual and it is just these two great quarterbacks and look at these two different styles and not to get much further than that Rachel well I. I don't think we're quite beyond this issue yet unfortunately I think that's because there's a larger issue in the NFL with a lack of representation among all levels of leadership. I think only two head coaches changes in the NFL. This year are African American which is continually shocking. I often think in the context of this conversation about Warren Moon. Who of course was not drafted rafted but ends up in the pro football hall of fame and this is not ancient history? He played in the year. Two thousand. I think that we still are in a place where you know. Progress is not linear. It's not always just up and up and up and better and I hope Ken to your point that that this is a two point. Zero three point zero in terms of Y quarterbacks and that will continue to see progress because they're not totally representative of the makeup of the league and they should be so before the two thousand eighteen in draft bill polian. He's a hall of fame. GM suggested that Lamar Jackson would be better off as a wide receiver and Polian just didn't think Jackson had the size to be quarterback because he six three to eleven and everyone knows the ideal quarterback is at least six four to twenty. I mean come on. That's that's crazy and one of the really cool things that happened this week is that Polian came out and said I was wrong and I always think of this the NFL. Oh really obsesses over these little differences in height in weight and I think sometimes those distinctions are just an excuse for the distinctions that nobody nobody wants to say out loud and I think it's great that this is changing. Lamar Jackson has six hundred. Thirty seven yards rushing through the first eight games of the season. Tom Brady has rushed for just over a thousand yards in his entire career. This is his twentieth season. But I I was reading Lonzo Neal's piece in the undefeated and she quotes a historian. Who says of black quarterbacks they are the next generation of civil rights workers because in some ways they're are risking their bodies to change a country and I think about all the damage done by rushing and that quote just really punches me in the stomach? I read that quote as well and I think about that kind of analogy. You know in in the same Pantheon as you know Bill Rhoden with forty million dollar slaves kind of analogy. I it distracts me is a little bit too far to take it. You Know Rachel setup of this very important in terms of how these things change and and what we can't forget is Ozzie. newsome African American man one of the few African American general managers was in the draft room when Lamar Jackson was drafted. So it is. It's just like corporate America just like the rest of the world the more inclusive and diversities rooms are the easier it will be me to make decisions based on merit without any reference or any lingering thoughts of whatever someone's personal bias may be. That sounds like a good thing so on Monday. The athletic dropped a report suggesting that the LA chargers formerly of San Diego were considering a move to London to be. The report only said that the chargers quote would would at least listen if the NFL approached them about London. Now since the report dropped chargers owner Dean Spanos has fired back with the following rebuttal. It's total this is our home and this is where we are planning to be for a long time period. He might be just protesting a bit too much there despite the protests stations and the NFL has denied the report to. I think the chargers in London even sounds like a pretty good idea. I mean this two teams in. La Thing is a failed experiment and London has got to be better than selling ninety percent of your your tickets to fans for the away team can am I right on this one. Well you're right about the idea of of how we're going to make a league global There's a famous story. Worry that one of the leagues that were playing overseas early on that the fans were kind of watching you know mundanely as as such being scored and then somebody kicked feel bill and they went crazy the idea I think it was Barcelona ideal seeing a great kick. But I think we're beyond that and I think the success of the various leagues have PAT in. London does bode well for that as a possibility. I still you know as we've looked at this over the years it's still a problem of travel. It's maybe if you get a team that's also in Paris. You'll maybe that's when it happens. But in terms of revenues can we put the chargers back in San Diego. I'm flat for it. Rachel Yeah I was GonNa say this is not a charters problem. This isn't La football problem. You know the rams have had problems with attendants it's tough at big urban areas somewhat somewhat ironically in California to draw to football games and this is a longstanding problem. I mean asked. USC AND UCLA Los Angelenos Bay are basically like you know. Show me the record before. They're they're willing to show up and watch games in person. I have a lot of family in southern California and it's also there are just generations of football all fans in southern California who are not fans of a team. They're fans of particular players. They don't have the same affiliation when it comes to the teams all right Rachel. It's your turn okay. Well last week New Jersey vast media reported on some troubling tactics by the softball coaches at Rutgers Rutgers in one instance from the story after rutgers players went six dollars over their food travel budget on a road trip. There were told her on. Six hundred yard sprints each each in less than seventeen seconds some players were left. Crying doubled over and exhaustion. One player said she blacked out this week. The Drake Group A longtime critic of college sports called for something interesting. And they called for a prohibition of physical punishment of athletes and they weren't talking about physical abuse but using exercise is as punishment and the group actually drew a dotted line between the amped up workouts in the heat that preceded the death last year of Maryland. Football player and post is practice. Sprints that coaches uses a penance pretty routinely experts say that using exercises punishment at best teaches. You know younger people to hate exercise and at worst puts them in physical danger so I think a lot of us probably happening question this practice. But what what do you to think of this. Is this something thing. We should really consider banning exercises punishment. The so often allows me to bring up my sorted sports history. But I am a pre water break athlete of the Seventies. I'd never reflected on it in that way. I tend to try to stay in shape but I do have an attitude about exercise exercise and I. I wonder how much that really is something to be concerned about. The idea of running wind sprints or doing something that gives you a mama overthrew flecked is is meaningful but certainly in the examples of players die and that sort of thing. That's an extreme. I know there are people at home. Who are like Mike? Hey My high school coach made me run. Wind sprints if it was good enough for me. It's good enough for those kids today but you know like when I was in high school I read around in the back of a pickup truck. Didn't kill me but I'm not gonNa say it was a good idea right like we've learned that said this. It came up this week because of that report about the rutgers softball team bright and if the report is to be believed and I'm not at all questioning it. Let the women on this team were being flat out abused by their coaches. And the fact that those coaches used exercise as punishment seems to me to just be a symptom symptom of that abuse. So isn't it possible to use exercise as punishment for good and not for evil. That's a great question. I don't know the answer answer to that. I think in in the modern sort of age of sports where teams have nutritionists and they're measuring vitamin D levels and they had these very precisely prescribed workouts Out so you don't run too much or lift too little. You know it strikes me as just counterproductive to have a plan practice and then just tack on. All these sprints sprints that is going to affect an athlete's recovery maybe his or her sleep all these other things. Yeah when you think about it back in my day. When the coach coach gave wind sprints it might have been part of the plan the whole time? Maybe they're just waiting for you to mess up my guest. For this week's exhibition of three stories you should know have been the Wall Street. Journal's Rachel Bachman and Professor Kenneth Shropshire CEO The Global Sport Institute at Arizona State University. Steve thanks to both of you. Thank you thanks. Bethany.

"And then coach self is being charged with head coach responsibility violations among five level one allegations on Monday so this is this is obviously significant for them as they look forward and part of the investigation around the school with the dealer so we'll see what it how it plays forward but the responsibility vote violations for coach alone could result in suspension for coach bill self and this can all result in suspension for cancers overall tend to get you caught up on what is trending. hi Jason thanks and you know this is one of the more interesting things has come out of this entire FBI investigation into all of this because we always said yeah what's it's all nothing and tell one of the giants in college basketball's targeted there's no other way to look at Kansas as a giant in college basketball yeah and so this becomes interesting because you heard Jason say their bill spell bill self charged with coach responsibility violation so tagging one of the biggest names in coaching in college basketball on this in a big big way these allegations that and I can tell you I was just two campuses we can call in the kids West Virginia football game in this news was breaking the day of the game and you could feel I mean it instantly became the most important thing that was happening around there almost anywhere in sports well we had heard when this thing started a couple years ago January yeah archer twenty eighteen what effect was a going to have it and that was with people I thought it was put to the side then it would come back with the name and put that aside and that's what everybody was waiting for one with big name in big programs be attached and listen the center of the center of this stuff has been a DDS and its employees and Candace I believe what they're they're the flagship program for kids it's just trying to write your hundred ninety six million dollar apparel deal right yes so that this now we have a big school and a big name associated so this kind of goes back to remember a lot of the the allegations around Louisville and what coaches doing don't know the NC double a bylaw around this idea of a head coach responsibility says that the head coach is presumed to be responsible for the actions of all staff members report directly or indirectly to the head coach and head coach will be held accountable for violations of the program unless he or she can blog can review the present a presumption of responsibility now they've come out and said very they're they're dying all this they're going to push back right all these things that bill self and others bill self said in a statement the narrative is based on in you. I know half truths misrepresentations in mis characterization I will strenuously defend myself and the program but I will respect the process and will not speak to the details of the case and he's also had his attorney say the NC double a has not alleged that coach self was involved was knowledgeable about any illicit payments to recruits our student athletes but what's sort of I don't funny is the right word but sort of shows you where we are in college basketball and maybe in all big time college athletics Mike is that they found out about this because they were trying to get out of another payment from another school well and it's so yeah there's a there's a few things that go into it here the name of the center of a lot of this is TJ god TJ gas no law who earlier this month he is a former adidas consultant was sentenced to probation and fined for his role in pay for play schemes to scare recruits to Kansas and other adidas sponsored institution so there's some text message things that go along with communication potentially between him and the Kansas staff gatal Cuba was I remember some of the names also in this Kristin Dawkins that was involved in a lot of this and I'm also I'm losing the first name of our data yeah yeah I'm I'm looking forward as well what I was accused of working with TJ gas goals of the adidas wrapped in facilitating a ninety thousand dollar payment from adidas to former Jayhawk recruit Billy Preston's mother and agreed to pay twenty thousand dollars to fend if I'm on who is just so says guardian to help get him out from under eight that was in quotes a pay for play scheme to attend Maryland which is sponsored by under I'm so evil right but that yet completely believe what that's what's at the heart of all these allegations and all the probes this idea that the speaker money had so polluted the world of college basketball to influence these kids to come to institutions that were sponsored by this again all the idea of pay for play the people don't think is happening that's really just governed by and being followed by in this case the middle man we talk about this be above board the middle man in the case of college basketball has been. the sneaker apparel company and the thing is I don't think anybody anybody is shocked by anything that's what about this but everybody were just waiting for the big school the big game correct it was Sean Miller in Arizona that was that the first kind of big school big name out there what was gonna happen then as I said it's kind of gone by the wayside but when you're talking about you know that the witnesses and wire tapping and recordings of what you have now again bill self in Kansas there absolutely say we did nothing wrong and statements promoting you know all the you know that everything is above board here but it's going to get interesting now that you have that again this big school big name you mention it that we have so many people say these are going to shake the bedrock of the restitution and all this David Reid path is the president of the Drake group which is a think tank dedicated to protecting academic integrity in college sports and he said when referencing the notice of allegations is not surprising but it's one thing to a ledge and another to know what's going to be the endgame I think we saw the North Carolina case involving academic misconduct I have my doubts that the membership really truly wants to punish these schools and punish coaches like bill self at the end of the day whether he knew or didn't know he should have known or did know my guess is bill self probably knew a lot more that's going on does the NC double a and the people involved in this actually want to do something about it is the quest right and and we're about to find out that instead of getting what what's going to be the difference of what's happening here and your players are allowed to go to a local car dealership make twenty thousand dollars is that money is not above the table all the money right now is below the if you think they're not getting paid just exactly article coming up one NFL coach show to see really has a nose for the football Walt Walt we'll get to that next goal can we ESPN radio ESPN news got the score and then got the strip Jack fumble recovery for the store boom boom.

"Laborers. Are, the only people that are not being compensated for the work that they do while those in charge. Receive mighty compensation. The only thing the only two systems where I've known that to be in place, it's slavery and the prison system. And now I see the NCWA. As overseeing of the system that is identical to that. She did not mince words MRs Carter a former student athlete at old miss wasn't necessarily calling out Duke. She said she was grateful her son went. They're calling it a wonderful experience, but she did add that in her opinion, the NCAA should be removed and it isn't doing enough to make sure student athletes get the education that they signed up. So to discuss this, we welcome in David ridpath. He's an associate professor of sports administration at Ohio University. Of course, we're bringing back Ryan Holland's into this conversation as well. You know, David, I want to start with you. You hear those comments. What is your first reaction. Well, my first reaction is certainly I try not to use the term slavery because I know that word has so many connotations, but I do get the systematic comparison. I prefer to say plantation economics or indentured servitude because it is a system where you have essentially management or overseers if you will, that is controlling the wealth and capping the earnings of people who are actually making that money. And I think that that's the real key, and I don't think we can discount the fact that the two sports were talking about football and men's basketball are largely African American male. And I think that that's part of the reason why people are uncomfortable with even talking about paying athletes because we have this fear. I think unfortunately, that African American males cannot handle this type of wealth or this type of experience. And I also resent when people say that, well, they get this free education. Number one, it's not free. And number two, that education is often not delivered. We don't need to. Any further than North Carolina. So while I try not to say slavery, I'd get what she's saying. And certainly we need to look at this system and what she said about the NC double A I think is exactly spot on it is not the organization to do to to be the sole overseer or the primary overseer of commercialized college Ryan. What did you make of what she said? I've called his slavery for a long time in not in the actual physical sense, but in a mental sense as a young ball player, if I wanna make it to the NBA colleges the path, and we've never looked at the ax, does anybody know the actual earnings, we know per bowl game or purchase ship series, but the actual money that they're making off of these athletes and to say that you get just an education is that completely agree, David, it's not even close to enough, and I know players and I also know universities that could care less about the player, getting the degree and a player carrying less about himself. Getting the degree. So let's say real problem in everybody's aware of it. And when these guys blow out their knees or they don't make it in the professional rankings, they put their mind body and soul on the line for the university, and they're not seeing the word rewards. It's a huge problem. Okay. So with these comments coming up, then David, I ask you will the NCAA do anything about that hearing these comments? Will it spur on any action. Well, unfortunately, the NC double A Ryan and Ryan have only has only acted with outside pressure, and I think it is going to take court pressure or governmental pressure for them to change. Because right now the system does work very well for many people on the rice commission and many people at that night commission hearing, why do they want to change it? Why would a Mike chef skier, Nick Sabin want to change the system. It works great for them and it's easy to hide behind this facade of this quote, unquote free education when that is not what's happening. I think what we need to look at is the NCWA could be proactive here, and I was disappointed in the rice commission by not acknowledging that these athletes at the very least deserve the ability to make outside compensation based upon their own name, image and likeness, and not being proactive in that for me was a huge disappointment. There are templates out there and plans to change the system as we know it. Certainly we have many options within. The Drake group Dame president of, but people aren't doing it David. You mentioned that idea of maybe making money on the outside. You know, it's an interesting issue because MS Carter there she addressed that and she wasn't necessarily advocating directly for paying players Ryan, but she did mention that there needs to be some sort of solution. Is there a fair solution here without paying player? Of course, there is. I believe you can pay players that legitimate stipend or or paycheck make them employees, which you can also do is allow them to go out and make their own money because not only can you not get paid, I'll tell you, you get these sponsorships, and now we open up the door for you to be able to take care of yourselves and your families, which some guys do. They are unfortunately, the immediate breadwinners in the family at such a young age, you know. So many people saying though, if we do that, what do we do about the concept that name of tourism? A lot to talk about here? Thank you guys, both for joining us. We appreciate it. David ridpath, Ryan Hollins. All right.
