A Slightly Greener Life With Tonya Harris

"I'm here with the lovely tonya harris. Who is an award. Winning environmental toxin expert and the founder of slightly greener offering busy moms simple tips to reduce toxins without turning their families. Lifestyle upside down. Tanya has been featured online in mind body green and martha stewart living and has appeared on tv shows across the country. Such as cbs new york. And the dr oz show for her expertise in environmental toxins nutrition and how toxins affect children so tanya. Welcome to the show so excited to have you here so excited to be here. Thanks for having me well. I want to start with this last little bit. About how toxins affect children. I imagine that you know you've spoken on this topic a lot. All across the country and no doubt is a very important topic. And when it comes to myself as a mom thinking about my children and the choices that i make of what i use in my home and what i feed them what i glean with all all the things It comes down to wanting the best for our children right. And i love that. Your approach to healthier living is first and foremost one of not overwhelming people. Which i'm one hundred percent about so it this topic of how to do a toxins affect children. How do you talk about this with parents. In a way. That doesn't just completely freak them out right. I know there's so much information out there. It's kind of scary when we learn it. But i think i should start out with the fact that my number one belief is no mom guilt because i think when we learned this the stuff that it can be so scary overwhelming. And then we go. Oh my kid that. I gave my kid that and we all do it. We all are doing the very best we can with the knowledge that we have at the time but then when we know better we can do better angela quote so i always like to start out with that because i know i gave my kids things in the past and then i'm like oh no i start learning this but as a child cancer survivor myself and then having all these issues with my own children and seeing the difference in removing some of the toxins has made an our home. I really like to talk about the health effects on children because even though they can have the same health effects in adults children are really more susceptible to environmental toxins.

"Dr was this. Is chris gordon sear. Dr oz is beginning a lot of flock for saying that he is sponsoring a lot of diets of when he's not. This is all fake news. It's not true he's not sponsoring any of these diet pills or diet. Products only suggest things that he likes on his show and he talks about taking good vitamins vitamin b. twelve. That i'm taking now is helping me a lot with anxiety and stress. And he's got a very good show. It's way interesting and fun and he has a lot of fun. People come on his show always interesting topics. I never knew that peanuts were good for the pioneer glenn in now i know in knowing that peanuts. Help you speed up your metabolism this. I didn't know even the i'm master nutritionist. I didn't know about that. So he says the walnuts sorry hazel nuts and peanuts are very good for the pioneer. Glan- helps thyroid speed up your metabolism. So that's a good topic. I think the a very interesting topic is nobody's talking about that. Everybody wants to know how to speed up your metabolism and now we know and i tried that i tried eating. Lots of hazelnuts. And i found that. When i was over eating i was not gaining weight. Which means if i would fast again in becoming size zero model that i would lose weight even more so i really liked doctor. Ause kizzee's interesting. he's fun. He was famous not only by. And kind of lying when you want stock draws this very like speedy and it's fast and it's like a b. Then it's always him talking about it. Interesting topics bringing people over talking about interesting topics so it's always fun to watch him and i really suggest that everybody should watch. Structure is because he's he's phenomenal. Dr. Mehmet Oz Says Waist Size Matters Far More Than Weight

"Is back and he claims this is what he says. He has the real weapon against fat. Don't we want to know what that and the best way to lose it once and for all he says that the key to achieving the best for you not jennifer aniston's body but for you as less to do with your weight and everything to do with your waistline or the reason we measure weight is because it's easy to do but it's actually misleading in many ways. First of all a lot of muslim people out there who way a lot right yeah. Muscle weighs more than fat. That's why fat floats hearing that as a kid. And that's one of the missing parts about measuring you wait alone. Plus doesn't tell you where the fat is the fats down your thighs. That'll cost you some dates. But it's not gonna cost you your life the fat here here. This is the fact that going to hurt you. And that's what we're gonna talk about today. Okay and why does this hurt you. Because deep inside they're not just beneath the skin. Deep inside is an oregon. That actually is right around all of your bodily organs your liver your stomach and everything else. It's pushes them okay. So what's a healthy waste while woman and then for man the ideal waste for a female under thirty two and a half inches young say that today for a guy what is for guys should be under thirty five inches. There's one yeah really under thirty five. That should be the idea. Waste and as you get more than that that costs you years of life and so these are points that are critically important for folks to get through. Because you're gonna keep a number to focus on. Jeopardy Guest Host Dr Oz Draws Criticism

"You guys. I know you guys all heard that they had doctor is on as a guest host for getting getting a little blowback. I don't know if they're trying out new hosts to see who's going to become the permanent replacement. Yeah they're like rotating a lot of different people. So we've got. You know. Aaron rodgers anderson cooper katie couric katie couric sanjay. Gupta kind of random. A random mix of people. I think can jennings guest hosted as well a doctor is. They didn't really realize how how much people were going to be pissed and i'm seeing a blowback by. I'm seeing some kind of like. Not i don't wanna say funny. But some some comments quote this stands in opposition to everything jeopardy stands for fans or calling to boycott the show. There's like you know people collecting signatures. There was a petition. Signed by almost six hundred former contestants from players calling for his removal. They said that you know jeopardy's known for being credibly. Rigorous deserved reputation to then invite doctor is to guest host a slap in the face to all involved right right. That's pretty strong. Pretty strong. i love is true. All of the clues on jeopardy are facts checked if knowledge and oz as we know pushy pseudoscience. And that's not just our opinion his they've been they've been studying what dr oz has been saying and they've come out with reports about how inaccurate and how much crappy has been peddling.

"What? Dr Oz out as guest host on jeopardy. I guess that was quick. Last night was the first time he's hosted right last night was the very first one. Well, I guess they're protesting his gig as the guest host eyes two week run. He's supposed to do this for two week. They're accusing him of dangerous and UN researched medical claims. What has he given medical advice during jeopardy? No, you just You know, some of the things he's had on his show over the years have been more of a holistic approach instead of pure modern medicine, quote unquote. So they're saying the fact that this is a Fact based game show is a slap in the face to all involved having him hosted. I guess like you were just kind of alluding to that, you know. Some of the stuff he's done in the past might not be by the medical book. If you Will that holistic, some of that kind of thing. It sounds like you know, he does a blend. I guess he does. He doesn't blend and that's I don't think it's a bit. I don't think it's a bad thing. I really don't our own the governor Dimitri's Stanley on Friday he has done a combination of Modern scientist. Whatever you wanna call it, modern medicine for you know, with his battle with prostate cancer and some holistic stuff, and he's doing friend Fantastic right now. So what? I don't understand why people freak out about that?

Meghan and Harry clarify they 'privately exchanged personal vows' before official wedding

"Prince harry and meghan markle a now revealing basically that they misled oprah which i think is is worse than miss leading people on jeopardy. Don't mess with oprah so they finally admitted to the daily beast that they were not married three days before their official wedding. If you remember that big oprah interview delaying one of the things many things that stood out was when meghan toldo they actually got married three days before the massive ceremony that the whole world including us to watch with our mouth is wide open so now a spokesperson has conceded that they exchanged personal vows a few days before their official wedding. The reason this is a big deal is if you start to tell miss truths on the little stuff. How do we believe that big stuff now. A lot of people are looking at ways to take a pinch. It these couple. We know that we know they're controversial. I like them but a lot of people do not piers morgan. I'm talking about you if you make a little slip if you tell a little truth of something you didn't need to say you could have said we had a little private. A private ceremony wasn't a wedge in a couple of days before you didn't need to look at oprah and say we got married a mistake Yeah i would say it was a poor choice of words so of course. I looked it up but a commitment ceremony is. That's what they really had. Is a marriage ceremony so marriages in the word and which to people commit their lives to each other but it isn't legally binding so it's not wrong for megan to have said we got married. It's a commitment ceremony and their mind in there is they were married. Even though it wasn't legally binding y- so yes if she wanted to be one hundred percent clear so people can't pull an extract but it does sound more juicy an interesting to say that we got married then. We had a private ceremony just for ourselves. So you gotta be careful. You know when. You're speaking to oprah got to get the words right maybe maybe over suta said you got legally married. She could have said no we. We had a commitment ceremony but that was our moment to just speak to one another for ourselves right. Well be not me criticize appropriate. Had i been the reporter doing that interview. I would have had a follow up with that if you told me you got married three days before this ceremony where a billion people watched. I'd be like what i mean. All the you married.

It also talks to police chief Adrian de as the person who sent us. This footage managed to infiltrate the group and secretly recorded several minutes. Of a postmortem with the marchers. Ah, group leader can be heard scolding and dressing down the protesters for being sloppy and lacking coordination after as PD arrested 13 people for things like obstruction, resisting arrest and assaulting officers. We're also getting a better sense of how the group strategizes and prepares for a demonstration, the group leader says. They know the Seattle Police Department's understaffed and vulnerable, reminding marchers. They face zero consequences unless they commit a felony and have free rein on the streets. As long as they stayed disciplined and focused. James Watt, we've been hyping up. Everyone's like what you hear ready, but never shall we don't be Because you know what that allows them to do. Grab on. You know what that does way could start numbers getting arrested. Help anybody you don't Because now I got to go sit in front of the jail for my friends she handle don't have the resources we could only get arrested and forgive them. Well, if you do your research on how our coms handle things, we are understaffed, and I have expressed that you know that we aren't extreme level of staffing crisis. However, we are still making arrests, and it doesn't matter if it's for felony or misdemeanor. We are still going to make arrests when it comes to property damage. "The people who doctor ause and the people who watch fucking c-span yet no kidding like there's not a lot of overlap guys so he's aware that he just has to give quotes that sound reasonable. Yeah and get out of there. The whole thing is just like a whole mass. There's a huge like elite accountability. Story here to there was an open letter from ten prominent physicians to columbia saying that columbia showed longer have him working there. There's been attempt at the american medical association but the american medical association can't really do anything because all the licensing is done at the state level and then the state level says that they can't do anything because it would be setting a bad precedent etcetera. I mean it's it's very white collar crime right over and over again. Every form of accountability that would ever impose any minor tiny consequences on doctor oz fines excuse not to do like one of the defenses of him in inside higher. Ed which is doing this panic thing. About free speech. Doctors professors tenured cetera. Say the real reason. These writers are seeking to fire is from columbia is a form of public shaming and it's like yes shamed constantly lying right or the very least you shouldn't be continually provided with the tools to continue to live to people s you have an ethical obligation to your patients and to people who think they are your patience. You can't just keep doing everything as you have been doing it. If it's actively earning people stop being bad yes stopping bad coffee bam had also since the congressional hearing if anything. He's gotten worse so in two thousand sixteen he does a physical exam on trump. What sort of live on tv had trump on and trump. You know he's like why didn't you release your medical records and trump is like. I did release my medical records and is is like sounds good one and then he does this like theatrical fake physical exam. Which like he doesn't in any way touch like it's not a real physical exam but he just asks trump a bunch of these questions and trump is able to answer yes or no and then he's like you seem like you're in good physical health. She's and then. This is amazing. Synergy convergence for our show in two thousand. Eighteen trump appointed him to the president's council on youth fitness. That old chestnut. "This is basically his main claim that you know look did we mention something called resveratrol on our shows. I guess we mentioned it. Sure all of a sudden these random internet con artists. Start selling it and saying that. We're endorsing it. how dare they. Yeah but also like you are fucking endorsing it do do you want to hear the actual transcript of what he said about. Resveratrol on oprah god. Okay keep in mind. He is saying. How would anyone get the impression from this that. I'm endorsing this product right. Here's the actual words that he said whereas patrol does one other thing it turns on a system in your body that prevents your cells from aging. Now think about it. Where do they grow. Grapes on. Trees on hillsides right. It's not a very historical environment so these grapes are sending signal to us. That life might not be so good so why not turn on that cellular that you have that allows you to live longer and better like how could anybody get the impression that you're endorsing this product. Also how does any plant survive on a hill. I know it's also not very convincing. Things grow everywhere. What are you talking about. So i mean on some level like i have a teaspoon of sympathy for dr oz because of course after this show airs all these scam companies appear out of nowhere and apparently they started selling thirty day supply of resveratrol and people with sign up for it but then they would make it impossible to cancel and at the same time. They're saying it's endorsed. By dr oz oprah to a lot of people end up getting mad at dr oz and oprah it's totally shitty and also at some point he has to acknowledge the show has to acknowledge that that is an ecosystem that has sprung up around their show. Well this is. The thing is that if he had said on his show eat. Avocados avocados are good. Avocado sales probably would have spiked. Or whatever you wouldn't have all these fucking griffin's coming out of the woodwork..

"Then why were you saying that you should take it because of a study right. No pick one. This is an alternative treatment in the way that we know that is because of western study. Yes isn't doing right by those medical traditions. green coffee. bean extract is a fucking pill that has made by like a multinational corporation. And then you're saying it's alternative. You know a lot of ways. It mimics the like medicine. Show staff that we talked about during our snake-oil do turtle conversation right. People like have been rightfully disappointed by western. Medicine have had experiences. I'm a fat late yet. You don't need to tell me about bad experiences in doctor's offices and what he's doing is front of like glomming onto this sort of vague but not totally founded idea that there is like someone else is doing it better or somewhere. It's sort of riding the coattails of the genuine mistrust that folks have for understandable reasons often. Yes also another really interesting thing. There's a lot of really good articles by doctors like people literally practiced western medicine. They say that it's also kind of bullshit to be saying. you know. These are alternative medicines who couldn't possibly measure them with western medicine and what these doctors point. Is that if you talk about. Something like yoga. It's a alternative medicine you know. Seen as very wou-wou twenty years ago the medical benefits of yoga are extremely well documented thing. We couldn't possibly say that. Yoga is good using our techniques of western medicine. It's like there are hundreds of studies showing the yoga improves. People's lives things like meditation and getting a good night's sleep and eating a balanced diet. We can measure the effects of those things. Those are not somehow alternative. I don't know why we're acting as if these are somehow. These mystical practices that we couldn't possibly assess no right and not every treatment from every corner of the world has been stripped. Tested or studied rate has to be money behind that we all of these different kinds of stuff. So we're not saying like if it's good western medicine quote unquote will have validated. It rains like but in this case like if we take green coffee extract we have an incredibly money supplement company that stands to gain astonishing levels of weld assist of has the money and the systems to be studied and to see if it affects what we think they are and that hasn't happened so at the very least that's like a red flag news. That's a red flag. There's this like weird fake dichotomy between alternative and western medicine and neither one of those. Germs are remotely defined right. It's sort of like floating signifier right and it also it feels to me like it prevents change too because if what you're against is western medicine you're just gonna do all this like natural path. Random stuff you're not gonna try to get better policies for universal health care or maybe doctors should be able to spend more than seven minutes with their patients. I mean there's specific changes that we can make to the american healthcare system to make it more responsive to all right if you have a critique of that system listen i'm an organizer i am board. This is not how that happens. I mean i do think the fact that dr oz is a lifelong republican is under discussion. No this is a very republican world. You right that it's like the free market is going to solve these problems. Yeah the there's nothing we can do to change our medical system except for the many massive done to change our medical system. I just eat that shit. I mean this is like one of my like extreme pet peeves is like you can't change the world you can only get yourself kind of think. Oh western medicine is going to be. What western medicine is going to be. But listen what you gotta get on board with this green coffee extract or raspberry ki tones or what the fuck ever. So his next claim lord okay is that he never endorses..

"We're going to do a little table. Read okay link. Yes i was gonna. I was gonna play the clip of his exchange with claire mccaskill in a congressional hearing. But it's just really long and really boring. So i took the transcript a condensed it down. So we're going to do sort of distilled version of this. Okay do you wanna play dr oz or do you play claire. Mccaskill claire mccaskill. That's sounds fun okay. So this is from the two thousand fourteen. Congressional hearing congress was looking into false weight. Loss claims oh dang all right it is. It's long it's serious business. I know k. Are your your your motivation. Is that you're mad at dr oz viral moments for your twitter feed later today right. Grill me now. Here are three statements you made on your show quote. You may think magic as make believe but this little bean has scientists saying they found the magic weight loss cure for every body type quote. I've got the number one miracle in a bottle to burn your body fat. it's raspberry ketone. Sorry i just got. It sounds like a delicious salad dressing. You're breaking character already. Is professional quote garcia cambodia. It may be the simple solution. You've been looking forward to bust your body fat for good. I don't care what you need to say this stuff because you know. It's not true with regards to whether they work or not. Take the green coffee bean extract as an example. I'm not gonna argue that would pass. Fda muster if it was a pharmaceutical drug seeking approval but among the natural products that are out there. This is a product. That has several clinical trials. I mean i've tried to really do a lot of research in preparation for this. Hearing and the scientific community is almost monolithic against you in terms of the efficacy of the three products that you call miracles and when you call a product a miracle and it's something that you can buy and it's something that gives people false hope. I just don't understand why you needed to go there. My job i feel on the show is to be a cheerleader for the audience. And they don't have hope they don't think they can make it happen. I wanna look. And i do look everywhere including alternative healing traditions for any evidence. That might be supportive to them. So you pick green coffee bean extract with the amount of information that i have on that. I'm still comfortable telling folks that you can buy a reputable version of it. And i say this all the time i don't sell it and neither not for long term use then so oh god what do you think. He is total political theater because he doesn't say anything substantive no it's a satisfying exchange but there's nothing in there where she goes. No these are the studies. How do you respond to all these studies. That say this doesn't do shit right. So the thing that jumps out at me about this. And i think because i've read so many interviews with him and he does this all the fucking time and it drives me nuts. He does this three step moves first of all. He says green coffee. Bean extract is good because look at the studies that show how much weight you can lose by taking this extract right then somebody pushes back on him and they say well Only have sixteen people that he wasn't very high quality and then instead of responding to those points he then says well it's alternative medicine. I don't know if it would necessarily pass fda muster but you know there's different healing traditions around the world and we couldn't possibly apply those standards and it's like if we can't apply those standards..

And then you're just gonna be like it wasn't a study good start to pick it apart. But i also know that i'm gonna be like too generous with how i pick it apart. Exactly what i was expecting would find some sort of specific things to nitpick at and the twist like the study does not exist augury which is true. I spent half a fucking day looking for this actual study. I put it out on twitter. I was like if you have any background neuroscience cognitive function anything. Have you ever heard of the steady. I looked at literature of us. I could not find a study found people in starbucks and some of coffee and some of them walked and drink their coffee. This study does not exist. And i want to be clear. This is the first study in his book that i looked like i went through his book and i wrote down all the studies and it looks like oh. That was real real. Hope this one's fake. This is the first one i looked into. And it's not a fucking real study. There is no study that measured the effect of walking on iq and what actual cognitive neuro people say they don't use iq variable instead. He's like this. Because i q does not change like that. That's not how these studies work and it didn't even happen. It's not even making you smarter because didn't even happen. Study doesn't exist. Oh my god my also can be a total dick. Yes of course all of his things like only need to use colloquial language. We just like to talk to folks. How their folks and then listen to this fucking sentence. Physical activity improves arterial. Function and better arterial function improves brain function. Yeah that's shitty. Sentence like exercise increases your blood flows and your brain needs blood to function. Oh jesus this is why. Science communication is hard. Because you don't wanna misrepresent anything but you do want to get across in a way that people can absorb it. And that's something the dr oz like instead of doing difficult of coming up with like metaphors that can help. People understand complex phenomena. Ever he just like this is a breakthrough revolutionary thing. Walking and coffee. iq will. You're not actually simplifying anything. You're making stuff up. Those are two different things. He's like coming up with these studies. That like don't exist. Or if they do he's not citing them or whatever and then he's building giant fabric coghlan's for like flames of green coffee beans and whatever. Oh it's not science yes So okay second. Second defense the dr oz offers for himself. He is giving people alternative to western medicine. No he's not. I know. I know it's not spoiling episodes so for this one..

"Here's tips for how to quit smoking. So it's not all bullshit but the fact that it's half bullshit and have not and he's toddling between them without necessarily like good road signs for this has evidence and this doesn't like that's the central problem right. I would actually argue that. That is more destructive straight up like medicine show pitch of. I've got miracle cure right here. It just fortified soup that we're all living in all the time which is when it comes to health and wellness and weight loss nutrition and all of that kind of stuff were like in this mucky combination of real verified information and marketing and wishful thinking right so for the rest of the episode. I wanna walk through the way that he defends what he's doing interesting. Most of this comes from his two thousand fourteen congressional testimony which i think is like a rich tax. Yeah the sort of the clips from that testimony go. Viral are the back and forth between him and the senators. And i think those are bullshit because the senators are just kind of playing to the cameras shirt but when you give congressional testimony you have to give long detailed statement and dr oz. Statement is actually very interesting. Because it's the first time that he's ever in detail had to defend the impact that his show has on the health of americans. That's so fascinating. I realized like as you're saying this. I'm realizing that. I don't think i've ever heard him answer for any of this sort of on his own terms like you. I watched the sort of like claire mccaskill and knocked her off back and forth. I will say totally playing to the cameras. Totally political theater. Don't care compelling political theater. It's fun to why we're gonna we're gonna do it later in the show. He makes four claims in defending his show. And we're gonna walk through them one by one great. The first claim that he makes is that he's educating viewers about their health. So this is what he says in his congressional testimony when we write a script we need to generate enthusiasm and engage the viewer. Don't watch the show. Because they're seeking dry clinical language. They watch because language. That's familiar to them which they would use when speaking to friends and loved ones. Which is a laudable goal. If he was actually doing that yes that would be great total. This is this is going to be like probably how this testimony all plays out. That sounds good and reasonable. And you're going to be like it's not what he was doing exactly. Because i should not have done this. This is like the biggest waste of my fucking time. Read one of his my. It's called you the user's manual. It was actually really easy because it's mostly like recipes and shit like there's very little actual content in his book but there's a difference between boiling scientific information down for a lay audience and fucking lion to them any consistently lies. Gimme a flavor of some of those guys. What are some of the things that are just like categorically untrue. Okay so i'm going to read to you from his from his miserable book okay. God you don't need to be a rhode scholar to stay mentally strong. Simple changes can do the trick. Take another study. One that measured brain function of retirees who frequented a starbucks in illinois the half who just sat and drink their coffee got no smarter while the half who drank coffee well walking for forty five minutes. At least three days a week actually improved their. Iq's parentheses no word on. How many bathroom breaks they needed. Oh lord the explanation. Physical activity improves arterial. Function and better arterial function improves brain function..

He just vacuuming up whatever's around. Whatever you got all right. Yeah another really important thing that starts happening in the mid nineties starts to get mainstream press attention so the surgical team that he's part of a new york does a bunch of sort of i like genuinely really innovative surgeries and gets press attention. Oh and once journalists art standing around and they realize there's like charismatic handsome doctor. Who does these weird kooky things in the operating room but has also really effective stories. Start trickling out of this clinic and so julia blues interviews one of his former nurse practitioners. She says it became about ause not about the project. Not about the patient's not about the work that all became secondary to his rise to the top. He was always acting. He didn't know this patient. He was not connected to this patient. We'd give him two or three minute soundbite. And he'd sit there in front of cameras like he done this work and had this deep connection. Yeah it's it's so sad. Because i'm like i can totally understand why people get irritated. I can also totally understand how this would be so enticing for someone whose dad just always wanted them to be number one seriously. Oh i feel for you bud but also this might not be the way and also. He has the confidence of an evangelist. You guys literally doing heart surgery on people. Saving people's lives very easy after that to say it wasn't a heart surgery it was their achey that save. Somebody's life. i know this is also two doesn't one is when he gets his. Go after them talking and him getting press attention and doing this interesting surgical stuff. Eventually he and his wife pitched the show to the discovery channel. Called second opinion with dr ause. They do a series of thirteen episodes. Where every episode is hint interviewing a celebrity about some sort of health issue so fatefully his first episode his about obesity and he interviews okra. So this is how they come in contact. She really likes him and she starts thinking. Hey why don't i have this on my show. He's charismatic. he's smart. He's interesting yeah. He's a super likable. Do yes exactly. Eventually they find out that the researcher is like constantly changing things like she's not putting the data into study well. Peoples weights are fluctuating. All over the place. She's mixing up. Who's in the green coffee bean group and the placebo group. Oh lead the company that makes this green coffee. Bean stuff loses confidence in this researcher and they hire two more researchers at the university of scranton they basically take her data which they already knew was bad because the numbers have been changing all over the place and they presented at a conference so it's never actually published but it's presented at this cleveland clinic conference that is the entire basis for this claim that you can do no diet and exercise and lose ten percent of your body weight right which is also again since time immemorial this has been sort of like the magic claim. Yes at the very least. If we had found something like that you would hear it from your doctor. I mean so much of this really to me comes back to this idea that there's something doctors don't want you to know. I mean this is language. The dr oz uses on his show all the time. He's like this is what to western medical system won't tell you and it's like the obesity epidemic is a pretty entrenched component of our culture. And if there was a cure for it that was this easy. You wouldn't just be hearing about it. In like a four minute segment on a dodgy. Tv show right. It would be cover of time. It would be cover of newsweek. It would be a huge fucking deal right and even then it would be Even like maybe kill you make you superstition acrylics. Do you want to know how he got this way aubrey. How did he get this way. The story the dr oz always tells is that he tells his dad. you know. i'm one of time magazine's one hundred most influential people in america. His dad immediately says what number you so. He goes to harvard for undergraduate in. Nineteen eighty five actually turns out to be a really important moment for him. He meets his wife. Who at the time is named lisa. "Stuck. Was you love this being wise that i usually don't recommend weight loss supplements but this one has got me really really excited. The recent study that you were talking about earlier they. The participants took the capsules and they did nothing else. They didn't exercise. They didn't change their diet. They actually consumed twenty four hundred calories a day. they burned only four hundred calories. Now that's weight. Gain not weight loss and they lost over ten percent of their total body weight and they had no side effects zero side effects. You guys interested in this material for for coffee drink. Why wouldn't just drinking coffee this. It's what we call a triple threat. Okay and it's the chloraseptic. Acid that causes the effect and it works three ways. The first way is it goes in and it causes the body to burn glucose or sugar and burn fat mainly in the liver the second way the most important way is it slows the release of sugar into the bloodstream. When the two were combined together you get this synergistic effect that basically burs and blocks and stops fat but it also is natural and safe. So the capture. You can buy where you buy it online. You wanna make sure that this is important that it's pure so you go to your web browser you type in pure green coffee beans or pure green coffee bean extract and you make sure that it doesn't have all the additives the except the ends the binders cellulose and the silica. And all the stuff so look under other ingredients to make sure that it's a pure product the it's such bullshit such compelling. Do you want to keep going. Are you bummed that we stopped. I hardly even know where to start with this rate. You have to make sure that it's hewer But there's no regulation on supplements. Yes and truly ever even just like street drug dealers will tell you shit your feels that both of these people probably know better than to just say. Hey make sure. It's pure sweet sweet. Aubrey much worse than you think. So okay tell me. All of this information is the federal trade commission lawsuits. So what we find out from the discovery files once everything goes public this guy. He's not a medical doctor. He has a natural pathak degree from the clayton college of natural health which is a school that the state of texas has said confers fraudulent and substandard degrees. He seems like he's just like a doctor on this right. Like i'm just somebody who cares about your health. He's actually a marketing executive for a company that makes supplements. Yeah so about a month before he comes on doctor oz he gets an email that eventually ends up the federal trade commission lawsuit from the dr oz show. And they say you know. We're hearing green coffee bean extract. Do you know anything. Have you heard anything about this. You know there's this study that's coming out showing weight loss. Have you heard anything about this. He at this point has never heard of this thing. He immediately writes back and says yes. I've heard of it. I'm really excited about it. And then that same day starts calling manufacturers to start producing green coffee bean extra..

"Know i know it's so bad so this is apparently a title of an episode and it says from gay to straight question. Mark the controversial therapy. He did an episode on gay conversion therapy like recently. Yeah so the little synopsis says is there a gay cure. Dr oz investigates repetitive recently. Banned in california for minors experts on both sides speak out watched the heated debate so recently banned in california for minors means that this episode happened in the last five years. Yes we're not in the middle of a society wide debate about whether conversion therapy for gay people is useful. That is a closed debate. We not have questions about that as a society. We are not gonna watch this segment together. Because it's a fucking nightmare but it's like one of the most unethical six minutes of tv. I've ever seen he basically brings on a bunch of gay men talking about like i had these urges and then i found gay conversion therapy and now i don't have them anymore. Which is like what are you fucking kidding me like. This is like donahue episodes from the mid nineties all. They should have been completely debunked. Dude i don't think you and i've talked about this. This is a campaign that i worked for like years. I worked on the oregon campaign to ban conversion. It is shit show. And so i will tell you. I know inside and out that there is zero dispute amongst psychologists and psychiatrists zero. It doesn't work and even if it did. Why would we do it. I mean i think this is important for understanding sort of the dr oz phenomenon because on some level some of the things on his show you can defend right like helping people live longer like diet exercise blah blah blah fine but then it's like every fifth or sixth segment is just random moral panic bullshit. Yeah so there's this infamous one where during the ebola panic which i think is twenty thirteen. He had a whole show about how it might go airborne anytime what was one of the ones that i've found. He had jordan peterson on to divorce counseling with a couple. That you're just gonna have like this random all right fucking goal. Help people with like john. One of the best articles that i came across on doctor. Oz was written by a doctor like doctors. Lows doctor ause. It's an article called. why dr oz. Knits is crazy and is by a university of chicago doctor called adams fhu and he summarizes i think really well just like the central problem. Not just the dr oz with this entire genre of entertainment there with me. It's kind of a long quote but it's really good the day to day practice of medicine is about caring for the individual. Well we physicians fill our days providing sound advice for patients. There are by comparison remarkably few recommendations that we can make to the population as a whole. Everyone should exercising wear seatbelts. Nobody should smoke or drink. Excessively everyone should receive.

You don't find him surprising I do. I'm not really. He's a host in in many ways on New Year's Eve, they've had a decade of successful hosting and and aside from his politics, he's kind of a likable guy, Okay, And so I see that and then Dr Oz surprised me. I was surprised by it that one Because while I find this information, the show fascinating. I don't think he's that warm and fuzzy. Okay, Who else? Those are the two biggest names. You know, we're waiting to see if Katie Couric will pass the test after she made some very political statements. They're kind of hedging their bets against the backlash that came out after she made some real angry or deprogramming statements about Trump supporters, and they're going to do all this. Just when I'm really, really I was comfortable from day one, but I've gotten really comfortable with Ken Jennings. Hi. I'm so I see. I feel like he's a college bowl host. You know, the old College bowl show. He just seems a little less refined than Alex was. But Alex had decades there so Maybe I need to give a little more time. What is my absolute favorite topic in the whole world in something that i would say has impacted my life. Probably more than any other tool that i've ever used an. It's a tool fasting. That i've been using really since i was in my teens It is the most unbelievable and powerful will end and even last night. I was on the phone with a leading researcher. In the area of the micro bio matt really excited to share with you. Some of the ran new like cutting edge research as it relates to. What happens when you're going through a fast for your microbiome. It will definitely cover that today. And so let's share your story really how you got going with this because you said you've been fasting since you're a teenager. So how did that all start so for me. What happened was i have always struggled with auto immune disorders so Verse autoimmune disorder. That really manifested was on my skin and that manifestation was with amount. So there's a deep inflammation within my audie. And i was born with these autoimmune disorders and they continued to manifest in different ways. From entering trio says to I have mast cell activation and so growing up in europe. I was born in switzerland on an it. Namic farm and my father's a chemist than my parents were and have always been one hundred percent committed to a healthy natural way of living. So i never went to conventional authors. I never had the experience of antibiotics. I mean none of that So living very healthy lifestyle. I still was covered in this berry. Embarrassing and uncomfortable That would lead in. It would pause. Just i couldn't get to the place where i had it under control and so i'm using natural solutions to to solve for. It was what we did every day. So from the foods that eight on anti inflammatory foods that i a unprocessed things all help but ultimately i couldn't i couldn't push the inflammation down as much as i needed to and so when i was in my late teens is when i was really introduced to the power fasting and at that time i would be doing juice fasts right so i didn't know that i could benefit so much more from from doing the different types of fast things that we do now so i had learned about intermittent fasting at that time. I hadn't i didn't know like that. Water fasting would be good for me. I knew that it was very important as it related to more of the religious ways of fasting but at that time i was doing juice fasting so i would typically do pretty intense juice fast for seven to ten days and i would mix that with different detox methodologies and they were very valuable and then quickly once a week i would do like a watermelon juice

In i customize my own crush fitness program just coincidentally stumbled upon. What would be prancer cise. What i would do is. I'd start out very early in the morning when it's cooling nice and quiet. When i was living on the beach there was an area called. The broad walk on. Hollywood beach was paved walkway. Where many people Is and i would start out with spot exercises with ankle weights and then i would go out and ride the bike with ankle weights on against the wind. And then i would power walk with my headphones on and The whole program was about two and a half hours. What happened was one day. I heard a really good song. I wrote was the walk minute. At the time. I started moving very rhythmically forward in a certain fashion which was to become prancer cise and i enjoyed it so much nyc steam to get an awful lot of attention that i decided. I got myself back to where i could do five k. and the reason i brought everything out at that point. It was the combination of being excited about being able to move again and exercise again. "And she licks her fingers. Triple your handwashing time wash. Wash wash also disinfect surfaces when you have a chance to clean the surfaces where you are putting your hands like we're seeing right now the same place? Where a straight nate had sex on household supplies twenty paper soap detergent. Make sure you have plenty food. Get beans and rice for man. I'm ready I'm stocked up. Your medications are Their prescription medications are filled each your fruits and vegetables. Take your vitamin D three. Make sure you have your flu. Shot because people are confusing their Flus with the viruses. And that's it. If you're sick take some zinc. Make sure you're eating. You're drinking your vitamin C. And all that stuff you know what? I'm thinking. All simple stuff right. There might be a lot of cases out there that we just have never known about. Because you think it's the flu and you think it's something else and you just don't get tested for it and you just don't know what it is and it happened to have been corona virus. We'll see that's the thing in. This is the kind of odd well anyway. I'm not going to make the comparison Just because you have crow virus doesn't mean you're done it. It's not what it is. Stay home take care of yourself let let it go away and stay away from people. I don't even but you don't even know you have it. That's the thing if you have a flu if you have a virus ev- anything stay home. Yes and there's a lot of people who have anxieties that things like this. Make your anxieties. Even worse I know because my my son tends to win stuff like this happens. You know my ten year old gets very anxious about it so we have to have the conversation and I have to keep reassuring him that you know. Look things happen. We figure it out? We get it done. We we do what we need to do. And keep reassuring so you have to have more patience with people that have anxieties about things like this. Keep reassuring them and making sure they feel comfortable and letting them know that we're going to handle it no matter what it is true. Be True to yourself about your anxiety as well if you are naturally anxious person. This is one of those things is GonNa make you anxious to take care of yourself. That's why in the middle of all of anything. Doctor is just saying meditate. You don't if you don't meditate meditate but you know sit down be quiet with yourself at several times a day and just relax. That's not gonNa make anything go away. It's part of many things you should be doing the fact that we're spending so much time on this on the radio is making people anxious. I bet we're a big thing. We can't ignore. I'm not worried about it. I'm not I I'm not either and that's when I told you my boyfriend is traveling today. And he's a little bit nervous about doing that and I was like you could be fine like come on over. It'll be okay. Okay we're young and healthy and this'll be what makes me not worry this one friend. I have this one friend who worries about everything and she is like. Oh my gosh paranoid about everything. Everything's the end of the world when she's not worried that I'm like oh it's GonNa be awesome. She's not worried about this. All of our lives decisions on that France. I don't WANNA use. He's not worried so I'm not worried at worry but I'm not gonna I'm not gonNA be stoop. No of course not. Don't be stupid. Go Wash your hands the fact that someone said. I'M GOING TO START WASHING. My hands really been washing your stupid onto the three things. We need to know Gandhi. We WANT CORONA VIRUS UPDATES EVERY OKAY. Well currently at least thirty. "Gumy's tinctures pens creams that got it all. I'm telling you there the shed and and Brad I couldn't love more who knows they might fuck and make Brad grow which would ruin his act but but would help them reach the cocoa buffs some top shelf. It's it's a common issue. I would caution everybody you mom in particular not to think it's a curse to not have time for yourself because the curse is too much time for yourself because no one expects you do anything because you haven't done anything for them and God bless her for I standing in place of people might have done the job she was going to do but I gotta say the existential crisis darkness doubles people feel is is one of insignificance right if you don't feel like you're a raindrop falling into the ocean of humanity that that's a problem and that leads to the heart disease that end up treating because it's not anger that that causes heart problems and it's hatred. It's it's like if I'm driving on the road and you cut me off. Yeah I get angry at us. A normal reaction telling you to calm down is impossible because you're not supposed to come down. Anger Calls for action just happened. You need to act right but hatred is wishing that guy with Di different right yes sixteen up because we got new altercation occasion who cares if you move. I mean you get angry. Yell you scream and move on right but to many people harbor that hold onto that and again because they they haven't found the with the age old wisdom of service to others and it's not about quitting your day job and gone off being not. It's not about that at all. They just appreciating what a huge difference complain each other's lives. If we just pump a little bit at at interestingly you know what I had Bernie Sanders. He's he's actually on the show this week all these. I'm having all the candidates on. I'm having a way I tell you why I said enough's enough. You guys get demonized. Every one of these people ran for office. Everyone of them has been successful and there are other ran President Boris so I'll take democratic side you can bitch and Moan Yell and scream is too far left right forgetting everything who cares all these guys have a town set so I wanna I human is you is but then I want you to him. What you care the most about forget about defending yourself at things? You don't don't matter if you get up in the morning your first morning president. What's the thing is so critical that hurts you about what's going on our nation that you're compelled to run for office so for Bernie for example it's fact that one in five people when they come out of the drugstore don't have their meds because they can't afford them and that a lot of Americans are underinsured or uninsured right? I get that I understand that any passionate about any explains it then the bigger question is how do you talk to other people on the across the you know what he said. Essentially this country got work because people who did not get along figured it out and we had to get back to that I'm here in Oklahoma Right which is one extreme of the year in the other extreme here and I I I love going to both places mixing it up a little bit because you've talked to smart smart people in both places they get it right. They know there's a middle ground. I know we have our biases. That's thank goodness. We have our biases as another use. The word diversity is not about diversity the variety I want fried fried ice cream flavors and it makes me better by the by live. My taste baskin Robbins was actually way ahead of their time. Thirty one different types of people got a little specific. We okay so then so then when so you knew you wanted to as a kid you become a surgeon do feel like all right cool. I've have made it. I'm settling here. You strike me someone. That's never been like there's always more. There's always I mean I. I want to assume that you did not anticipate. You'd be going into season eleven of your own show or did you not never making television wasn't on my vision board. I zero interested in this space at all. I wanted to be a heart surgeon and the best I could be and my whole life. My passionate desire was advanced technology that can make these things that we do less invasive less problematic that get people to survive. There's so much we can do make medicine better but here's here's the part great disappointment in my life. I finished medical school the whole time Memento School. I'm waiting until I actually understand the body. I really know it the way doctors know it. I graduated from medical school go. I did really well my boards. I don't really know the body. I don't really understand the body so I talked to my professors actually understand that what am I am. I feel like a real dr but didn't it's not that the doctors when I was growing up new everything yeah and here I was finishing medical school and I didn't know everything wow so then I say well. I mean what what happens next. We'll residency okay well. That's GONNA be a lot of work but at least then I'll know everything right. I go through residency same process. I finished my training. I don't know everything and I finally realized doctors don't know everything and we're not supposed to know everything and that's a fallacy that I grew up believing was the case and USB stop changing my trajectory. After I finished med school or residency you can't because the breezes ultimately that medicines such a great field is you'll never learn it all. It's impossible impossible. It changes so quickly yeah. That's why my best professor medical said half of what you learned in medical school will be proven wrong by the time you finish your career promise you're not half but all of a sudden you're going to keep learning yeah and that's what I did. Medicine I learned I learned learn and then along the way I began to realize that my patients were walking into the operating room was such a dramatic gap and understanding about what was going on. They were killed boss in the holding area. I mean zero appreciation nation Jesus. I remember I played a twenty five year old lady coronary blockages twenty-five Latino Lady. I see her in the in the recovery two days. Later has little kids around her dad who loves her dearly. They're both chubby things. He brought her Burgers fries soda and I realized is that he was celebrating her survival of illness that happen because of what he's beating her. I don't understanding and that's actually dropping the in the media my wife remember devising commercials. Oh yes my wife's is what's my wife's at my wife would vising commercials. She's amazing New Yorkers a her she. She's an actress who wants to be a New York. John Much Zine has save me from getting busted at the mall for ball stone. Thank God for her is a weight so how'd you guys meet through we met her father is a very famous heart surgeon okay. Her father actually is a trivial pursuit question. I'll share it with you can get the question is so in nineteen sixty nine he was on the first show a heart transplant team in America mark and he graduated the program and start playing rock music in the or and no one would stop because he was a surgeon and he said the Rock Music helped him perform born better so rolling Stone magazine Big Article About Him as rock doc. Oh so I was playing against true pursuit and that was the question. I said it can't be dad the and of course he got right. I'd lost the point so bad. Oh my gosh so he was he was going to deal with my dad. There are friends and they my dad was taking it could be hidden in a while and he said once you bring one of your deep. My father in law had six kids so my wife was one of six yes. He's just bring. One of your daughters arranged marriage yeah and we dated secretly. I didn't want my dad to know anything to do with this. Yes the worst I could do is let him know. How could you hide that? Watch uh-huh dating. I shouldn't tell anybody he added. Stop talking a couple of black formation blackout. Did you remember your first date very vividly. I took her to so my wife's vegetarian yes when she told me so I took it a pats. I well first of all I'm prepared dinner for because vegetarian chicken and so she said well you know I am vegetarian. I say vegetables to and she said No. No Vegetarians only eat vegetables so I never heard of that before as a first year medical student so I said Okay we'll go to patch cheese steaks patchy stakes. which is the big? I'm in Philadelphia Yeah big cheese steak place lines around the corner. I wait the whole lines half an hour driving back but for my for my Komo for low exactly I get the front line. I said we're GonNa she's taking much. I'm a vegetarian so I don't get it. I don't eat meat. I don't I don't eat any meat no meat nothing not not this the I eat meat so we fighter I fight just say fuck it. Here's some Vanilla Fudge Yeah I just I got the peppers inside thirty four years later. Best thing I ever did was marry her. That's it's amazing best thing without question. Yeah you strike me as romantic yeah okay. So how do you hear that Romania we so okay so you guys is Matt. You want to get the media and said you said because people had this lack of understanding. She was the one who she said you know the reason they don't have it. They don't get the message because you never gave it to them. Being being all of medicine to truth bomb right I mean most of us hide them best stuff in these how many people realize can reverse their diabetes with their diet alone before we started the show almost nobody and so after a while he said you just have to go out there and look Oprah knows how to talk to people people change what they think and People Oprah taught me two as the years later because my partner and yeah she gave me my start. Yes people don't change based on what they know. They changed how they feel. The if you don't get people to feel differently they won't change what they do. So Lisa was the one who said look at how does that and then when Oprah needed someone come talk about health. My wife was the one automatically be Gayle King Angel that she is set up the first interview ever did and then after that it was my wife became tickets thieves by did that show seventy times and then years later after having done. That's all that time she said this and I think America for health show without that process I wouldn't this was again. I very clearly say I had zero interest in doing television. It wasn't on my vision Asian Board. It wasn't for Lisa and Oprah never happened. Do you now be honest with what was more nerve wracking your first open heart surgery or your I sit down with Oprah Winfrey. Oh the open heart surgery for sure okay I. It's not because I shouldn't have been nervous. I was so out of it. I'll give it this. Is Your Aloof like for so you were you. Were just I did not I was doing. I tell you start with that second yet but let me tell you about the show yes so they've Chicago. They let me bring all these organs and because I was Cho- these organs on the television show so I get the Eagle Cooler I mean going through security. They thought I was Jeffrey Dahmer. I've got a bone deliver. Yeah we would come back here so I go through note by no questions asked I mean they were screening for for everything but they're not screaming femurs and stalls so I get this stat and I have a really nice job on that. I flew out there with I don't WanNa get it dirty so I changed out of my student. Put Fourteen dollars con scrubs on and do the show this this is how ignorant I was about the impact of that process and it was at Naievety that actually beat me comparable in front of Oprah. There was a point in that some constantly to make yourself comfortable. No I what I was doing it just like I should probably wear this and nobody was really getting and you hear about thirty and they thought I did it on purpose. Everyone thought I knew what I was doing. And that's your signature. Look now that was you look like an idiot savant so that's what we're doing the show and she starts asking about the gut. I'm any test yes. She said well how much gas made by these intestines..
