Rather than developing new energy sources or figuring out ways to cut carbon emissions, some new companies are actually trying to pull carbon out of the air. Living carbon at startup out of California is actually genetically modifying trees to grow at supercharged speeds, turning CO2 into wood. The Wall Street Journal says taking they're genes from algae and pumpkins and engineering them into poplar trees. In a greenhouse they grew over 50 % faster than the other trees. They've already planted new forests in nearby Pennsylvania and also in Ohio and Georgia. Some ecologists say the effectiveness of this method will depend on how long the trees last and if they easily succumb to pests or wildfires. Luke Lugert, WTOP News. Some more information on that ground stop we've been reporting on at local DC airports. All flights into DC area airports have resumed. The FAA had ordered a ground stop of flights Reagan at National Airport, Dulles International Airport and Richmond International Airport. Some of the ground stops caused unexpected diversions for flights already in the air. Elizabeth, a resident on a flight from Memphis into the district, says her flight change was very unexpected. I was a little concerned because I was like, I didn't realize there was even an airport and the fact that it's kind of in the middle of nowhere was a little concerning. I was like, okay, we're going to Lynchburg. The FAA says the air traffic facility handling incoming flights was under repair when the facility switched to a backup system. Talking about energy now rather than figuring out some new energy sources and cutting carbon emissions, some new companies are trying to pull carbon out of the air. The startup Lithos is depending on the volcanic the salt rock to pull out about a billion tons of co2 from the air. They'll take it from mining by -products from quarries and then pay farmers to spread it. Some in Virginia were paid 50 bucks an acre to spread the dust rather than other fertilizers. The Wall Street Journal reports that it may even boost crop yields. So how does it take co2 out of the air? You squeeze by single file. like Sounds it may be single file to the right, but again, be careful approaching. Again, authorities should be on scene out now. and it It is very slow. Pretty much the length of the 11th Street Bridge headed out of town as a result so be full careful approaching. Now also chatted with a crash on inbound New York Avenue at the intersection with 4th Street and Penn Street NE. And there you squeeze by, if you're coming inbound, you squeeze by single file to the right outbound. They have a left lane closed with additional response so heads up for that as well, so be extra careful as a result of response there too. Now if you're traveling on the Bellway in Maryland the on Attlewood between I -95 and the bridge over Northwest Branch, eventually down the two right lanes through the paving project, so heads up for some slowdowns there. It's been better lately, but just be aware they are out there working actively tonight. Virginia Bellway for now, no major issues between Alexandria and McLean. If you're traveling on 95 and Virginia, working northbound between US -17 Falmouth and Centerport Parkway, it works on blocks the right lane and it does occasionally slow down in that work zone, but worse is the paving project southbound 95 south of route 606 Thornburg exit 118, headed down toward mile marker 116, eventually you're down to one single lane to the right through the paving. We have an update to the last week story about a person who was struck and killed by a red line train between Rhode Island Avenue and Brookland. Metro GM Randy Clark has told NBC four the person killed was subway surfing. It's a dangerous TikTok trend in which people video record themselves riding on moving trains. 115 passengers were safely evacuated from the train while working to recover the victim's body. No one inside the train was hurt. The victim's identity has not yet been released. The arrival of oppressive heat and humidity is a teaching moment for actors who are advising, drank up everybody, fatigue, muscle cramps, lightheadedness, and even kidney failure. The amount of fluid that you get into your body is not all from what you drink. About 20 % actually comes from food. Dr. Jahar says listen to your body this summer. When you get thirsty, take a few gulps and when it comes to hydration, H2O is still king. Where we can do a lot of collaboration work, saying things like drug discovery, finding new drug compounds, curing diseases on computers mostly, and then at the final step validate that in the lab. Rob Sharma, a researcher at biotech firm Atom Bioworks, says ChatGPT is already helping in the search for new medicines, cutting the time it takes to identify molecules for potential new drugs from a month down to a week.
