"We live in a confused and confusing age. Things once considered obviously true are now rejected. Things once considered unthinkable now thought to be unquestionable. How should a christian thank for the call center. I'm john stonestreet. This is break point. In the state of oregon high school graduates when now no longer have to demonstrate proficiency in reading writing or arithmetic the logic behind this suspension of the state standards according to the governor has to do with equity somehow. She missed that helping racial minorities by not giving them. Even the most basic tools for life is a different kind of bigotry altogether. One which andrew sullivan has called a bigotry of no expectations. And then there's the story of michaela kennedy cuomo announcing to the world that she's moved beyond identifying as a homosexual and bisexual and even beyond pan sexual to now demi sexual meaning that she's only attracted to those with whom she shares an emotional bond the need to publicize each and every stop on a journey of identity. Tourism is an odd feature of our day. The idea that every feeling attraction or preference is in and of itself and identity a tragic feature of our day and in case. Anyone thinks we've reached the bottom of this slippery slope. A tick tock video has now resurfaced from last fall in which a young woman passionately explains what may be next instead of identifying his he or she many now claim the words kitty pup bonnie self as pronouns. In other words we may soon see chosen identities that transcend species not just gender. My friend dr. Kathy cooks at a recent event. Our first response in all of this should be tears not anger. It's true of course that many of the victims of self inflicted bad ideas but it's also true that we live in a cultural moment in which even medical schools denied the basics of biology. How sad for a young person to feel so distant from their own bodies they'd rather be called a rabbit than a human but to be clear are crisis is not merely a moral one. It's a cosmological one in epistemological one and other words. We've not just lost the ability to know right from wrong. We've lost the ability to know to know what's real what's true. What's false and the ancient world. It was much simpler. There were authorities civic and religious that would announce what was good and true. You were told these berries are good. The water from that spring will make you sick. Your people came from this place and therefore you worship these gods. In other words people came to know the world primarily by the trusted and accumulated wisdom of those who had lived before a major shift emerged a few hundred years ago i in the west and then elsewhere as people began to question the knowledge that they had been given the growing sense of distrust in revealed wisdom grew alongside a greater confidence in what could be learned through reason and science reason not only offered a critique of revelation and tradition but a compelling replacement for it however along with material comforts this human centered approach to knowledge brought along new and oppressive ideologies on a societal level. We saw state-sponsored evils unleashed under the banners of progress in the common good on a personal level though the clinical beliefs of the enlightenment made life easier. it left it emptier. The arts and social sciences in particular took a hedonistic turn truth claims built on human reason alone just proved inadequate for human needs when the postmodern shaft which we now live downstream from suspicion and doubt are just the only things we can trust skeptical not only of authority but also the objective of human reason and underlying and permeating skepticism. Now dominates the search for knowledge. Truth is subjective. It's found within created by and for each of us individually. We imagine ourselves to be free thinkers free from the constraints governing authorities free from tyranny of tradition free from anyone else's expectations even free to imagine that reality conforms to our imaginations and fantasies. Even though it doesn't underlying this brief epistemological history of western civ is a very basic reality without god. True knowledge is impossible without god. Certainty loses skepticism. Truth devolves into power. Objectively cannot escape subjectivity philosopher. Richard wordy put it this way quote. I came to realize that the search of the philosophers for grand scheme that would encompass everything was an illusion because only a theism that combined a god with equal measures of truth. Love and justice could do the trick. Now i know what you're thinking. I know that god. But rory had already dismissed the possibility of god and so that made any real attempt at discovering truth a dead in but a thousand years ago anselm of canterbury offered a way forward suggesting that the pursuit of truth could best be understood as quote faith seeking understanding a christian worldview acknowledges the frailty of the human mind but still grounds knowledge in the eternal unchanging nature of god outside of us and a god even better who communicates and this vision. Our limitations are best understood not as dead ends but as invitations to ask questions and to seek answers from the one who has them. Christianity offers something far better than the dead tradition of ancient days than the arrogant ideology. The modern era then the socially constructed tales of our postmodern time. What it offers is the true description of the world as it really is as the true self revelation of an omniscient god who not only loves us but he wants us to know for the colson center. "I'd entity tourism will never give people what they're looking for but it does give christians an incredible opportunity for the call center. I'm john stonestreet this break point earlier this month. Michaela kennedy cuomo daughter of new york governor andrew cuomo announced that she now identifies as demi sexual as she described in the interview. Her journey has gone from identifying straight to identifying as bisexual to identifying his pan sexual to now finally demi sexual that latest identification refers to someone who sexually attracted to people with whom they first formed in emotional attachment. Now that kind of i want it to be special approach to sexual intimacy is really nothing new. In fact i think it was the plot of almost every teen coming of age movie in the eighties and nineties and on one hand reattaching sexual behavior to emotional. Attachment is quite an improvement over the no strings. Attached hookup approach or the digital replacement of porn addiction on the other hand however considering an emotional attachment as a way of expressing and therefore identifying oneself rather than as a measure of relational maturity. Well that's not an improvement at all. It's just another way of doing expressive individualism. Not to mention the only way to be a demi sexual in good standing with all the other identification. These days requires that one not prefer male or female and their emotional and sexual connection. So it's not exactly accurate to think of this whole demi sexual thing as the return of pretty in pink now. Look it's difficult to keep up with all the new identification and all the rules that govern them someone recently suggested perhaps we should just change this. Acronym to lgbtq tb a and then be done with it after. All no sexual behavior was considered a category iv identity until quite recently. Now all of them are and that's a move that ensures that none of them can be considered wrong. A natural or immoral the essential points here to understand about this whole discussion about sexuality is this first sexuality is no longer seen as behavior in our culture but as identity in other words rather than something we do. Sexuality is now who we are second who we are is considered fluid not fixed so a journey through the acronym like michaela's is considered self-discovery not a crisis increasingly education and social forces are pushing the on. This journey in the whole culture is cheering them along. Now all of this might seem nonsensical even observable wrong to the rest of us but it is widely assumed as true and normal. What christians must understand is. What's happening and then be prepared to respond. If we are to love god in our neighbors in this cultural moment this will involve at the very least being ready to tell the truth. Anything less than that is not a way of loving the victims of our cultures. Worst ideas we also must be prepared to offer the far better vision of identity love sex and friendship that's only found in the christian accounting of reality to not offer. The better way of the gospel would be both heartless and foolish because not only. Do we have a better story to tell but the timing now is right in this late chapter of the sexual revolution. The cultures exhausting itself. And all of us with it in this perpetual fight against reality in other words. There's a grand opportunity right in front of us right now. For example the growing rift between the letters of the sexual orientation acronym particularly between the els. And the ts will prove to be irreconcilable while the teas attempt to silence any and all descend from absolute gender fluidity many of the l. Still think that bodies and biology matters. The growing tension is leading some members of the lgbtq community to try to cancel others now. Of course that's the only way forward for those who have learned even if subconsciously there ideological rules of engagement from critical theory. You see the only way in this way of thinking to advance. Ideas is through power not through argument. It's great if you're on the strong side of the issue but not so much if you're on the other side and in the ensuing chaos. The church is going to have ample opportunity for victim care and we can also take place in this whole conversation as a voice of reason. My friend dr. kathy cook off a note. Just how ridiculous. It is to ask a grade school kid. Who's not sexually active. What their sexual orientation is while the culture treats sexual orientation like race in the end all conversation about everything. The church has this opportunity to help a child. Unlock who god is made them to be. And now he has uniquely created them in his image. It's far more compelling all of this inject some stability and two students who live in a culture that offers none and it also injects god into the conversation that's a critical point encountering the rise in suicide among young people. This my friend dr. Matthew sleep is argued the single greatest determining factor of suicide success even among those who experience suicidal idealization is whether or not the person believes that god exists or not. Cs lewis outlines in the four loves the biblical understanding of love are simply better than anything currently on offer and the written into the very fabric of our lives. These loves point is to hire questions of meaning and purpose and provide answers and are beautiful when described and win embodied. Look i pray that miss kennedy cuomo will find what she's looking for. She'll never find it through identity tourism. Maybe a christian in her life can point her to a better way for the colson center on john. Stonestreet with breakpoint..

He's good all the time that that means what he made was also good and that if we really believe that we have to believe something about ourselves those of us who don't like the way that we look how tall we are the depth of our voice or a million other details that go into what makes us us we can forget that when god created humans in his own image. He proclaimed to be very good recently at the wilberforce weekend. My good friend. Dr kathy cook the founder and president of celebrate kids reminded us about the goodness of our creator and what that means in terms of the enduring beauty of his creation. And what that means in terms of who we see ourselves to be. It's a particularly poignant point at a time and place where so many kids are taught to hate who they are either by academia or social media either by those telling than they were born in the wrong bodies. Are those telling them. They're just not tall enough or good looking enough. This was my favorite talks from the entire weekend of the wilberforce weekend conference because it spoke to the goodness of god's creation so here's a portion of the talk by dr kathy cook at the recent wilberforce weekend. So i'm kathy. Cook celebrate kids space here in fort worth. And i wanna talk with you about how god made us good. I think god is good. And god is good creator and if children and teens and adults don't know that then it doesn't matter to them that they're created in this image someone thirty nine thirteen and fourteen declares that we have been formed by god in our inward parts. It says in psalm. One thirty nine thirteen that father. God knitted us together in our mothers. We'll knitting is a precise skill. Afghan sweater thing and it has no purpose at all the size of the stitch the size of the needle. The color of the yard and the design of the creation is known before the knitter begins. Do we praise god. because we're fearfully made we stand off ourselves now. We're not god but it's the same fear in the old testament is fear. God we would have this awesome respect for the creation who we are and we're wonderfully made where unique. No one is like us. Oh praise guy and then it says wonderful are your works and then the verse that revolutionize my understanding of god's intent is the end of someone thirty nine fourteen david rights on behalf of god. My soul knows it very well. My soul knows very well. That i have a wonderful work of the creative attentive dot fearfully and wonderfully creation made in his image. I have tremendous empathy for young people who live in confusion in a chaotic it messy culture. I believe with an awful lot in me. That if i was young today being called sir. I might wonder if i was supposed to be a boy. I have empathy for the teenagers and the young adults. We are privileged. Celebrate kids to talk with who do not believe they were created good. They do not believe in a good creator. They don't understand the image of god in and it's not their fault. We have generations of young people trying to change what they should not try to change in their unwilling to work on the things they could work on because frankly the adults around them are weak. Dot is good therefore he made me. Because i made in his image and he is fully good dot. So there's gotta be something here and i choose to not see it as wrong. I don't see it as a mistake in a challenge. Sometimes i'm surrounded by great people. And i'm loved well by god who nobody misdoing even people who love me deeply and without that i would question so much. "Them and you would say like i talked to the mops maugham's about you know. I know you're mad. You're so mad. You can't have an ice cream cone right now and then to say but you're gonna be okay and there will be more ice cream in your future but for that kid before i say the but i let them go. I'm mad. i'm really mad because it gives them a chance to explain that and then for my kids. We did not have a timeout area. In our home we had calmed down step and we had things like pin wheels and bubbles in squishy balls. Things that really. It was a time for them to pray and ask god to help them. With whatever feeling they were feeling and fact. That was the big thing we had on the issue. Open the box. It said ascott. You know because that they could read those three two three letter words and then to begin to work through that but we wanna look to those physical symptoms you know obviously if they throw themselves down on the ground you know you've either. You may not have mad though. You may have so scared. They're overwhelmed especially kids with sensory issues. You will see that maybe the tags the sound and the smell i. I'm living in a house with two of those and it. It's amazing what they get. In fact the best thing about cova when my husband bought it is he could not spell smell. And i could cook whatever i wanted to take great. The garlic could run rampant. He wouldn't care because normally he's like what's that smell anyway. So we want to look at these nickel sations and not only the ones where they're throwing. Maybe a tantrum are they which wine completely and not doing as much talking. I ask my kids all the time. Who have you talked to today. Who have you interacted with a specialist. Our kids get older. Some that goes on i. I never thought i'd be telling my kid. Just get facetime and talk to her friend. If you told me a decade ago that would have been my response in lessons. Only kevin i say. But we've made some adaptations there. But i wanna know who are you talking to what he's talking about. Sometimes kids have a hard time talking about their own worries in this especially there will defensive as they get to be in high school so i asked him whether your friends worried about. 'cause that's the conversation. Sure happy with their friends. Okay then we wanna look at sleep too. So i love to ask my kids. What did you dream about last night. Did you fall asleep easily. Did you stay asleep. How you know how was your night. And that's a great way to find that out because when sleep is becoming erupted. That's another sign that we may need like a supplements like magnesium. I give my kids by museum at night. If they're having some trouble with that and i am not a medical doctor but as long as they're not taking out the things i do have a training in integrative nutrition for mental health and that is just a really easy thing that can reduce anxiety for all of us. Don't overdo it or you'll hear about the low. But yeah and then i also asked them to. I like i'll watch their eating and you don't want to over like watch it. But what i i love what dr kathy cook says about being a student of your chai and yang sharia s- about them so i notice. Oh now don't forget. I'm an eating disorder specialist. And just let me say. Don't freak out if your child gets a couple of meals or eat some really huge meals because our kids like they round out and then they shoot up and then they round out and then they shoot up so i tell parents unless your pediatrician is expressing concern about their physical health and their their. Bmi is a term. We're gonna use medically. They're probably in an okay. Sound that an even when they do they just say things like one of the things i notice with covid is my kids started spending more time in the pantry so i just asked him when they wanted to snack. Could you get this out of the fridge. And that way. I knew they were getting like string. Cheese or yogurt or fruit or vegetable or something like that that they weren't just constantly pinot seizing carbs. Yeah which we have to admit. I mean i did a lot of that too in fact i told my daughter like we have this thing with house. Could he's going on that like Tell like my my has she got to put the he's up he's you're buying could beat out. I'm like the cookie dough is what's really going on here because i keep on kitchen saying not gonna and do so we do seek Soothing themselves with fayed or something. Like that and i wanted to normalize in caution a very common coping skill in our country right now and that's destruction 'cause when i go and speak to women's groups around the country and i say you know during covid nineteen who's eat more carbs than they usually do. There's a lot of people standing up. But when i say who's benched a series the whole room saul step. Kids are daming. Parents are watching. We're all trying to distract ourselves from the worrisome tomorrow. And as long as it's moderated a distraction is a healthy thing. It's part of dialectical behavioral therapy that we use the counseling office but if it becomes compulsive you spend more of your life living in the distracted world than in the actual world enjoying it and interacting with people and being present. In your circumstances it's become a problem for you and i think we're all connected after readjust that little bit. Yeah because i think i've noticed. We are going to be talking about younger kids too so if you know moms that are having a hard time because it's summertime and they're just like. I don't know how to keep them off the screens. I don't know what to do to keep I'm busy. Make sure to share this episode with them and if you missed last week we're talking about. Birds M._p.'s so unloading you guys up with all these fun you know topics to tackle all during the summer but one thing that I really liked about Kathy when when she was on last time it's just talking about how we can can connect again with our kids and a wireless world and I think that is so key and she just has some good tips for us so I hope it inspires you to just think a little bit more on how to navigate the whole screen time world and I totally get it like I mean my Kids Watch T._V..
