"Is the podcast that recaps the television sitcom Scrubs from the perspective of the Sirius Star's Zach Braff and Donald Hayes. I'm sure this is so annoying, but I just want to say I love the show, and I'm like I'm always like it's not annoying. You kidding me? That's like the best helmet you give us. So it's annoying when you're eating food joint, Zack and Donald twice a week as they interview former cast members, directors and even creator Bill Lawrence, listen to fake doctor's real friends on the I Heart radio ad or wherever you listen to podcasts. Carry your time. 25. Now. In Colorado's morning news, the president and his supporters just took a 12 punch online after two major social Media sites band that Trump based channels. Due to hate speech violations. The streaming platform twitch suspended the president's official channel and the social Forum. Reddit Shut down the pro trump Age called the Donald. Yeah, it seems like it's a fine line between free speech and what the president wants to say. It is allowed to say And what is hate speech? We're taking a look at those moves with SIU information Science Professor Dr Brian Keegan. Good morning, Doctor. Thanks for coming on. Thank you for having me. So let's get into Reddit. What did they say about the pro Trump Forum? The Donald and why it got banned? The Donald is a Subreddit community on Reddit. That is not an official trump sort of campaign place. But it's really a community where, like supporters of Trump started post messages and come together in 2015. For years has been a thorn in the side of the red it the broader platform. They do a lot of things that kind of messed with the algorithm. They pose a lot of different kinds of speech that I have other people. It's over years that read it at the platform is really struggled to figure out what to do with this platform because it's been super active. If you're any social platform you really care about getting you did on your platform and having done be active and click on add, but Uh, So what happened was, ah, they were initially Corentin is what it's called. So you have, like, click through back in 2019 like a disclaimer saying, like, not like Subreddit had from some troubling content. But just yesterday read it. Finally, band like that community and they did it on the basis of three rules. You are violating like the rule against harassment for manipulating disrupting a platform and for doing things that contributed to breaking the state. Doctor. I have a new behaviours are new, but they finally fell to get across the line places like reddit and twitch or, you know any of these social media platforms. They're privately held, so I'm sure you have to remind people. This really isn't a free speech argument because this is not the government trying to abridge Spree speech. This is private entities that that have a right to do that, right? So is is there Is there a line that's been tran Vert Trans verse there there that people are trying to point out that? Hey, I don't have a right. I can't get my message out on these platforms on being stifled. So you're actually right for this red it is, you know, a private platform, and so they are able to make their own decisions of the corporation about kind of content they wantto host. So on On. What you've seen with the Donald is that there's been sort of different kinds of cruise over time that like some kind of behavior, like crosses the line and a bunch of people decide they want to leave. And what happened over and over again. The people that like that, the steps the red it was taking a moderate their platform over the years, the light that they were not extreme. What we just saw. Yesterday, like lead locks, large exoduses of people to leave the classroom and they went the other by formed by Fortunate H and our boat, Like these other kinds of platforms were Amar. Okay with clicking extreme content, but what it comes down to it. It's like you need lots of people like a social platforms like is only effective if people are on it, But there's no one on your platform and no one engaging with it. It's harder to recruit people into your platform. And their logic like going to the other, smaller, more stream sites really all apart. And that's what you're starting to see what Facebook and Twitter as well that these people, you think that the moderation that's happening is too extreme or too little or something like that. They threatened to leave and go to someplace that will host their speech. It turns out, no one wants to be there. You know, not a lot of people want to be around this kind of speech. So these platforms are like, actually not relatively strong bargaining position when dealing with the kind of argument to say, like, you know, we want to host speech for that lots of people on a beat, See? Not just the most extreme things that you want to drag us into. Yeah, I think hate speech is one thing. What about misinformation and opinion? What are your thoughts? On? Fact versus opinion isn't the role of social media to call out falsehoods? Again. You've got like there's a responsibility there around that. Ifyou're amplifying messages that are affecting the ability for people to go out and vote participate. Democracy are are are taking action by showing up the protests that are You know, authentic, You know, there's multiple cases that came out the Moola report other kinds of reporting that the Russian IRA and other state agencies are like organizing Facebook groups and protests and things like that. That are bringing people out. Actually getting people immobilized when there's no, really No one in the country is actually like organizing those events on so on one hand, you have to like, think about protecting. There's a responsibility there that these platforms have to ensure that the content At their algorithms are amplifying that their users are engaging with have some basis and in truth, but again, like what is truth These are hard questions. I killed philosophy for centuries. See you. Information science Professor Dr. Brian Keegan. Thank you so much. Travel. Well, he had a 30 newscast ahead. Your drive right now. John Morrissey. Ugly spots that.
