"Okay CBS news time three forty two and again for those of you just joining us we are standing by for some live comments from the White House rose garden president trump is expected to address the nation and just outside the gates we are hearing reports of tear gas being fired at protesters just outside the White House I will certainly keep you posted on that front health professionals meantime are warning that those large scale demonstrations here and across the country are a perfect breeding ground for the coronavirus more from KCBS is Jim Taylor when it comes to those large street demonstrations there's really no such thing as social distancing one of the things that spread that is loud yelling allowed speaking or singing we've seen that and in churches and choirs so yeah hi you know I think people can and should be out there but they need to be wearing masks share the UCSF department of medicine Dr Bob Wachter he says it scares the hell out of him to see the large crowds humanity energetically demonstrating shoulder to shoulder what we now know is that the virus is a symptomatic in forty to fifty percent of the people that have it and those people are capable of spreading it so the fact that people are out there and they feel fine is no guarantee that they don't have the virus and can spread it he and other health professionals are calling on the public to follow facemask rules the rules now are quite clear that everyone needs to be wearing a mask when they can achieve significant social distancing and to me that is the right call Jim Taylor KCBS K. CBS news time three forty four of president trump approaching the podium my fellow Americans my first and highest duty as president is to defend our great country and the American people I swore an oath to uphold the laws of our nation and that is exactly what I will do all Americans were rightly second and revolted by the brutal death of George Floyd my administration is fully committed that for George and his family justice will be served he will not have died in vain but we cannot allow the righteous cries and peaceful protesters to be drowned out by an angry mob the biggest victims of the riding are peace loving citizens in our poorest communities and as their president I will fight to keep them safe I will fight to protect you I am here president of law and order and an ally of all peaceful protesters but in recent days our nation has been gripped by professional anarchists violent mobs arsonists looters criminals riders antifa and others a number of state and local governments have failed to take necessary action to safeguard their residence innocent people have been savagely beaten like the young man in Dallas Texas who was left dying on the street or the woman in upstate New York viciously attacked by dangerous thugs small business owners have seen their dreams are only destroyed new York's finest have been hit in the face with bricks rave nurses who have battled the virus are afraid to leave their homes a police precinct has been overrun here in the nation's capital the Lincoln Memorial and the World War two memorials have been vandalized one of our most historic churches were set ablaze a federal officer in California an African American enforcement hero we shot and killed these are not acts of peaceful protests these are acts of domestic terror the destruction of innocent life and the spelling of innocent blood is an offense to your vanity and a crime against god America needs creation not destruction cooperation not contempt security not anarchy healing not hatred justice not chaos this is our mission and we will succeed one hundred percent we will succeed our country always wins that is why I am taking immediate presidential action to stop the violence and restore security and safety in American I am mobilizing all available federal resources civilian and military to stop the rioting and looting to end the destruction and arson and to protect the rights of law abiding Americans including your second amendment rights therefore the following measures are going into effect immediately first we are ending the riots and lawlessness that has spread throughout our country we will indeed now today I have strongly recommend it to every governor to deploy the National Guard in sufficient numbers that we dominate the streets mares and governors must establish an overwhelming law enforcement presence until the violence has been quelled if a city or state refuses to take the actions that are necessary to defend the life and property of their residents then I will deploy the United States military and quickly solve the problem for them I am also taking swift and decisive action to protect our great capital Washington DC what happened in this city last night was a total disgrace as we speak I am dispatching thousands and thousands of heavily armed soldiers military personnel and law enforcement officers to stop the rioting looting vandalism assaults and the wanton destruction of property we're putting everybody on warning are seven o'clock curfew will be strictly enforced those who threaten innocent life and property will be arrested detained and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law I want the organizers of this terror to be on notice that you will face severe criminal penalties and lengthy sentences in jail this includes antifa and others who are leading instigators of this violence one law and order and that is what it is one law we have one beautiful law and once that is restored and fully restored we will help you we will help your business and we will help your family America is founded upon the rule of law it is the foundation of our prosperity our freedom and our very way of life but where there is no law there is no opportunity where there is no justice there is no liberty where there is no safety there is no future we must never give in to anger or hatred if malice or violence reigns then none of us is free I take these actions today with firm resolve and with a true and passionate love for our country by far our greatest days lie ahead thank you very much and now I'm going to pay my respects to a very very special place thank you very much in with mansa president trump turning his back on the crowd and walking back into the oval office after remarks delivered in the rose garden we are gonna bring KCBS we can bring our remarks stand local adults thank you that's the word I'm grasping for yes what if we just here here mark I'll tell you I have been watching the speeches from president for half a century up and covering them professionally for over thirty years that was the single scariest address I have ever they ask the I. it again I'm almost sorry to say this because I love radio but the one thing radio can't do is have a split screen and those people watching on television just for the president to live with that as a hundred yards away two hundred yards away police are throwing tear gas and are beating protestors in the street outside the White House some of the protesters were clearly agitated but but this was the president's saying law and order we're gonna stop this we're gonna squash this and you know there are there are close to a thousand National Guard to be called out in DC the president said earlier today to governors do you guys have been weak and you're letting the protesters dominate any girl look like jerks D. secrecy something you haven't seen before and the president clearly orchestrated this so that the the tear gas would be hovering over the white house when this happened and I you know again without taking you know sides on the incidents that started this at all the United States were ever to move toward some sort of authoritative regime this is what it would look like it I don't I'm not concerned that's what's happening here but I will say that anybody else from around the world who received a quick survey to show on television with our president speaking does work at the same time we think the United States has had a almost a revolution what do you use the word dominated and I thought that was interesting because the president said I am calling on governors to dominate the streets that's a pretty powerful phrase yeah it's I mean what what what he said is in repeated several times lawn order that you know we dominate we have and and this is very similar to what Richard Nixon did in nineteen sixty eight when there were riots after Martin Luther king's assassination and if there were a lot of people in this country who are very scared and didn't know what was going on and the president at that point candidate Richard Nixon took advantage of that essentially said I will restore law and order and that's precisely what trump is saying today eight and and you can argue about whether or not that is the right message I mean there really are two sides about this I know I was working I just got back to my office which is no more than four blocks from the White House is where this is taking place there were protests all day they were completely peaceful and what happened in the last hour is that you've got a human full of idiots protesters were provoking police and you've got orders from the top clearly to start pushing back and the police emergency movie Dr Zhivago you know the horrifying scene with the sellers forces charge them one person's here pulling up their Billy clubs to scare the protesters to this tear gas everywhere this was a confrontation that appeared to be made for television and again the reason I say this was so incredibly scary there's no question that the White House was in control of the timing of this depression was supposed to speak about forty five minutes ago he delayed as he delayed this happens it happens split screen and then they went to him I've never seen a display like this and I suppose as a political matter there are some people who say that this is appealing to his base will help I think then off a lot of Americans in the scared of what they see tonight wow well thank you so much as always that's KCBS political analyst mark Sandel low on the president's remarkable words that you just heard live right here on KCBS much more coverage to come.
