"Giant. Overnight. The whole World Exchange and it all started with him. I'm sending on the great shoulders of people like this in line at the capital, we met Cathy Ellsworth and her daughters. Almost the day of his death. He has been doing things trying Tio getting involved getting in good trouble, and that's just so inspiring to me. Louis will lie in state at the U. S. Capitol for public viewing until 10 o'clock tonight, one of the nation's highest honors, joining us now on W. W. J with more on the life and legacy of John Lewis's Reverend Dr Wendell Anthony himself on the front lines of the civil rights battles for decades. And Dr Anthony. Thank you for joining us this morning on W W J Good morning. Thank you for having me. Talk about What your experience has been with John Lewis in your travels, prayers and thoughts still go out to his family and to his staff. He had a very dedicated staff to him because They recognise who they worked for and worked with. He was more than just a congressman. He was an iconic figure. In the history of civil and human rights, and so they were privileged. Always to be with him, and they had kind of a family orientation. With him. My experience would Congressman Lewis was always one of grace and off. Power. You could not enter his presence would about Knowing that you were in the presence of a special person Hey, was not Big on himself. He was not Um, untouchable to the degree that you know some people you just can't touch because Of who they are, who they think they are. But He was a very humble person, and I use that term. That adjective very, very specifically, he was humble. You know, the Bible says those of us Who exalt ourselves to be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. This is why we're exalting him now because of his humility. He walked Uh, just like he talked, um, and to be able to move from Preaching the chickens on a farm in Joy, Alabama. Two going to be with Sam Dr Martin Luther King Junior who referred to him as the boys from Choi because he wrote him a letter. When he was 17. I'm asking if he could come and join the civil rights movement in Dr King told him to come on. On when he did that history began to shape. In a very special way for this very Unique and special person. We had him. You may recall in Detroit. For the five of Freedom Fun dinner. In 2011 and everybody wanted to such John Lewis take pictures with him. To be around him just to connect with him. And electrified the room because people wanted to touch the man. That have been with the man, Obviously, Dr King. Oh, and two. Just pay me to the one who would come across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Almost losing his life. Um Beaten but not defeated. On the interesting thing about that march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. And John Lewis live what he talked about him till he told people always to keep going. Keep fighting and don't stop. When when he was beat by the Alabama state police. Oh, and others and the folk who had to carry him back across the bridge. They took him back to the Brown Chapel Church. The church where March started from they had a prayer service there before they began the march. And they took him back and he was still kind of unconscious, didn't know. Blood streaming down his head. Still very much traumatized degree from the beating. And the moment he recovered. Moment he was able to collect himself. He was saying to the people Don't stop. Keep fighting. We can't let nothing. Turn us around. Keep going, that this man is bleeding almost day at dying. And he's down on the people to keep going. Keep finding Don't stop. There was just something about that spirit. He and C T. Vivian At the same kind of spirit CT. Vivian did the same thing. When he was trying to register black folks to vote at the Dallas County courthouse in Selma and When he was standing there serve Jim Clark, the same said, and the and the deputies that beats on Louis. When he came across the bridge took that ax handle and not CT. Vivian down, Hit him in the face. You could still see where to stitch his arm underneath his His lip and he was bleeding was raining that day. On DH very much intimidated. But not dominate about what happened when they knocked him down. C T. Vivian kept talking Kept pointing him and Sheriff Clark and other thing You're not going to stop us from register built. You're not going to stop the people. We have the right But we have the right to do what we're doing. We have the right to be here. And I asked him once a CT. Um why did you keep on talking like that? A man could have killed too. He said. Red and I had to keep talking. Because if I didn't know what the people would have lost hope. I had to keep talking. I had to get back up my hat. Just be strong. Sort of the people would remain strong. And I wanted them to know that no matter what they throw at us We can't throw it back at them, but we got to keep going. That's the kind of spirit that's the kind of faith that's the kind of commitment That John Lewis and C T. Vivian and John, Joe, Larry and Andy Young and Jesse Jackson. Tiny little hammer, Ella Baker.
