"It was easier than you might have thought becoming a medical doctor New York City city in the late seventeen. Hundreds wasn't the nearly endless gauntlet of schooling and residency that physicians face. Today back then folks had a couple of options an actual medical medical school or private lessons from a practicing doctor for the official track. There was Columbia College as New York City's only medical school at the time. This was where you could enroll and work toward a real degree. But if that wasn't an option one could go to the new hospital where Dr Richard Bailey offered to teach classes of his own. Each option for all their differences had the same problem though. There were just not enough cadavers to go around which meant that a lot. A lot of students lacked the hands on experience. They needed to truly master their lessons thankfully for them. There were less than savory alternatives Columbia. College sat conveniently close to a pair of cemeteries although their demographics. Shouldn't surprise you. One was a potter's field. A burial place for the poor and unclaimed while the other was called the Negros burial ground and although it was a few blocks away the New York hospital made use of those cemeteries as well now. Columbia Columbia colleges. Medical program was run by a man named Dr Charles McKnight. He had a solid reputation in the community and didn't blatantly instruct his students to provide their own cadavers. I threw bodysnatching. But he didn't tell them not to. And it stands as a perfect illustration of how silence from authorities can often empower the worst people however New York hospitals. Dr Bailey had a less than perfect reputation. He was rumored to be a cruel man. Who experimented on the sick against their wishes? His patients were often poor and without the social clout to fight back making them the perfect choice for a medical teacher looking for hands on experience for his students. In January. Seventeen eighty eight. The city's medical students began to increase their activity at night. Robbing dozens of grays one. Reason was that snow is still bill. On the ground embodies stay fresh longer in the cold. Typically dissection had to begin immediately after the body was dug up for obvious reasons but the cold and snow. Oh allowed for a bit more time. In fact there are stories of severed limbs being stored in bundles of snow. While internal organs were often pickled in whiskey or vinegar nigger to fight off the que it was messy most likely took a strong stomach to handle at all but the students did it every single night rather than keep their activity discreet. They became more and more bold which left evidence around for the general public to notice and be disturbed by two things happen as a result of their bold and obvious crimes. I the local community of free. Black New Yorkers gathered together a committee and sent them to town hall which was located nearby they. They stood before the city council and ask them to find the people who were stealing the bodies of their loved ones and require them to be more discreet about it. And I know what you're thinking king. Why didn't they just ask the city council to stop them completely and the answer is complex because yes? The medical students were being disrespectful. And the way they handle things was ham fisted and sloppy but there was also a large percentage of New Yorkers who understood the upside to bodysnatching because of students didn't get a proper hands on education. They wouldn't make for good doctors and that had the potential to turn into decades of pain and suffering for their future patients was was it an easy choice absolutely not but they felt like they were picking the lesser of two evils. The second major event kicked off by the increase in bodysnatching snatching was a letter sent to the local paper. The daily advertiser this letter addressed to the editor of the paper complained about the criminal. Deeds taking place and it suggested that laws should be passed to prohibit. It's pointing to just how insidious disrespectful and racially biased. The crimes were the daily advertiser published that letter in mid February seventeen eighty eight generating a storm of dialogue and concern within just a couple of weeks. Another another anonymous letter was sent to the paper. This time a rebuttal of the first. The author of the second letter was most likely a medical student so we have to acknowledge the the obvious bias that drove them to rights. But it made that same old argument as before more. Cadavers meant better doctors and everyone wants a skilled medical professional on their side when life goes sideways alongside this new letter. The daily advertiser published news of another bodysnatching in the city. Now obviously there were far for too many taking place to report on all of them and it was rare for poor and minority communities to get print space. This one though was different. It seems the body of a woman was stolen Lin from the Graveyard of Trinity Church and the Church wanted to offer a financial reward for her return. All of this tension began to put a strain on the people of New York City. The tug of war between the need for better medical education and the common decency than all graves should receive the balance between desperation and morality Ralphie and the clear differences between the way graves of the middle and upper class retreated and those of the poor and under represented frustration. Like that doesn't just go away instead. It's simmers and builds and become something more and more volatile over time. then in April of seventeen eighty the eight all of that came to a boil and the results were terrifying.

"Saturday's news talk leader. Twenty five minutes after four o'clock guests with Dr Catherine Ortega, Courtney PHD Dominic Cappello we call this monthly segment the dog and the dog. Season. I think we'd all agree. I hope what we'd all agree that one of these buns may be very soon we come in. And we start with a positive. This is where we are succeeding right now. Having to go back to talk about the bad news and trying to do the setup every time. Now, everybody will know about what you were talking about in every Bill being Saint pages cure this thing. All right now. So you guys are going out the book is now free. Everybody can download it. If you wanna buy that fine. You guys are going out and meeting with people who are reaching out to you and saying, yeah, we we've read the book we're seeing a path here, Albuquerque, Kentucky, Oklahoma and New Mexico. So you went up to Aspen you'll Espanola came to you guys on Monday. What happened? Well, Richard Bailey. Dr Richard Bailey is just a I think a true hero, president of northern New Mexico college. He basically came to us and said, you guys are talking about what's going on in my college and in my community, and let's do something about it. And so we are going to partner with him. We don't know exactly what it's gonna look like yet. But we're going to basically set Spinola up to be the first community that addresses this in a real funded way with the key sort of anchor institutions in place. So that would be the college the Landau foundation. Hopefully, the mayor of us been will join as well, and we're going to do some big things there. Yeah. I mean, I think we have an opportunity to look at the model and the model could end up being that basing adverse childhood experience prevention in a college campus makes a lot of sense. They have access to research. They understand data. They are hub of the community there about. Learning their students have aces their faculty of aces. But also what was amazing about? Dr Bailey is that he and these are still conversations were having. But one was you know, we can be so much more than just serve the campus. We can really be a center for the city and for the county and so to have a conversation like that with someone in his position for us is inspiring. You know, we were out there all the time. You know, we're down we're down in Las Cruces doing good work where we're we're we're we're doing forums. But so often it's kind of a blank stare back at us. Like, I would say everyone who hears about this is very sympathetic like that's a serious problem. But no one goes to the next step of. And let's do something about that. And I think as we've mentioned there are some champions out there in Kentucky, unless crews who were the first champions. But Richard is right here. Dr Bailey and for us because we live here. We thought we'd be starting something in Santa Fe to be quite honest with. You and not that we doubt it won't happen at some point in Santa Fe. But it looks like Espanola is going to take the lead, and Catherine is from from spaniel, I can speak a little bit more about why that community is ready for this. Yeah. And I think that is part of the reason why it resonated with Dr Bailey because he's in it. He's in the community. He sees his students. He sees their struggles. And it's kind of like this is it. This is the underlying factor behind all of this is the childhood trauma. And like you were saying earlier, you're not gonna learn in school. But you're also not gonna learn in college and those struggles are real and barriers to finishing college things like poverty effect that it's not about just access to college. It's support the whole way through and he totally gets that. And he gets that. It's also supporting the next generation of of kids because a lot of the students there have children as well. So how do you wrap around those families and really lift up the whole community you in Tasmania high school? I did not. I went to McCurdy McCurdy was. Now. It's charges. Yes. So head on nine nine girls. When doing the show up in Aspen, you'll last Friday from upward bound and the faculty kind of no not the faculty the full-time northern New Mexico college student, who's kind of their career curriculum curriculum coordinator winded McCurdy, and so but the nine girls from Valley High School their stories, you could probably totally relate to an Aspen you'll they kind of with the gamut. They were the Hitomi the personification of all those issues. One had no future with not going to get out of probably sophomore in high school because she was a fighter she had a temper. She was violent. But given hope given a program giving some guidance and friendship and people who care about her. Now, she's got big plans no longer a fighter no longer violent taking care of her siblings. I mean, it's that simple. Sometimes just a program and people to believe any right? Exactly. Yeah. And that's why one of our recommendations in the book has mentorship programs having someone who cares about you who can show you different paths. Exactly twilight. Roll the the young lady from McCurdy her role that person and she is that strong as a well, she'll graduate this year from northern. That's great an elementary school teacher, and she's going to stay in s Penola, which is even amazing as well. Right. Yeah. And that's another thing we need. I think we are taught a lot. I know I was taught growing up in that success means leaving and that's not necessarily true that that was the attitude of I think three or four of the girls your plan get the hell out of town. Yeah. Fine. If that's what you wanna do. But you don't have to hot a lot of us. It was just getting out of the house. Yeah. Just what I just want to get the heck out of that. I'm getting out of high school. Parents just want to experience something out, you know. You know? I mean, I'm glad that you brought up mentorship. And I think a lot of people when we talk about trauma, and he says and abuse and neglect, and again, people go it's just too big. We don't know what to do. I just have to keep saying like a skipping CD. It's we know what to do. There's just a few key resources strategically placed mentorship early childhood learning job training. These are the things along with behavioral healthcare, but putting these things in place is not brain surgery. We we can survey accounting. I know exactly where the gaps are and services, we know we know how to do it. So I think getting back to the possibility of working with Dr Bailey is that we're really going to take this project on and really show on a college campus. How you use research data to get there? Can we take a break and come back? I wanna I wanna talk about why plays like a community, college or. For your call your university could be that anchor could be kind of the thing that the community needs. Now, the podcast from those girls upward bound and has been Yola is on Santa Fe.
