"And nine and evenly just found out about a but she wrote a book on carnivorous plants. In wwl United Sixty is I graduated high school in two thousand nine. Sorry and then just started a my sort of. Janney to become a botanist. After that say it's just yeah. I just love to learn more about her. So what about if I said? Let's go to the Westralian herbarium and check out some of the specimens. She denied it to Barium. I would love that. The herbarium is a vast library of specimens and seeds sampled from W. is incredible diversity of plants. And let's made a former head of the herbarium I because at one year old botanist Dr Naval margins path crossed Rica Erickson's when he was just a boy. I guess when I was a child. There's a Bush land not far from home and used to go and look at orchids and things like that are really fell in love with a an unseen insectivores plans and I was really fascinated by that. Here was a plant living near my backyard could catch insects and dissolve them and I found that not macabre but really interesting so I proceeded to grow these things when I was quite young around about eleven or twelve. What were those plants they call draw surro- and it so happens the Westralia. The South Western Australia is a real maker. Most of the drivers in the world is fairly worldwide genus on there so many in south Western Australia that it's really remarkable area. A real hot spot for these Sundays and so I had a chance of showing some of these. Some Pot. Plants at wildlife show was in the town hall and in those days knows this particular. One was organized by the famous Harry. Butler look at that bag. Aiding the plan. But that's wrong. Harry Butler the laconic naturalist dictating all cocky. He went on to host cult primetime. Abc TV series in the wild in the late. Nine Seventy S in fact that plant which grows here in this swampy country where the nitrogen is very low makes up its oxygen supply by actually aging bucks it catches them and sticky hairs them and so build up its supply but at the start of the nineteen fifties when Neville margin was a keyed showing his pot plants at the wildlife show Harry was involved in the Wi naturalists club. As was one person came up to me rather thin prim looking lady and I had a label on the plan to one of them. An put used the name draw. Surra return to folio because only had English botany books and that was an English plant and she said owner. That's not that she was very polite but very firm and she said no that's draws stolen if Fra and I said Oh and she told me she was Rica Erickson. She was preparing a book on. These things are nearly died but she was very polite. Very firm and author Hollandia of the wrong name on this terrible but I soon learned. I found her rather frightening but then I was probably shy. And she was just so knowledgeable and so well respected that. I guess I was just a bit intimidated but but she was very polite..

"Of people. Maybe don't really actually see plants in their environment. They may be seen as a bit of a background. You know or as a side salad you know. If you look out into the Bush land you might just see a bunch of grain in reality. There are many different plant species that make up that green plants so vital to life on earth and in themselves they're a vital component of life on Earth. Plants can provide food and habitat and all sorts of other resources but just of themselves. They're you know an intrinsic part of diversity and especially here. Nwea do have such an incredible biodiversity. It's important that we protect that because it's really special kind of risk plants Unfortunately threatened by things like climate change and habitat loss and pollution. But also by poaching often when you hear about poaching you might think of like rhinos or other animals like that but it happens to plants as well where people might go out to a wild place and dig them up to take them home. But you're really taking them away from their natural Habitat Gutu. It's a heritage. We've got the floor Western Australia's absolutely incredible and yet people and building say Land North and south of Perth in box clear it it was clear developed best then sometimes. I proceed to go to nurse with some by some of the same sources. Be Suspect Kim is insane really and you've just got to walk through the Bush sometime not drive through one hundred ten kilometers an hour but walk through and stop and go look at the diversity in the fact that things can cope and then incredibly dry sand when you go north of Perth and yet flare so fantastic and an awful lot of people with four wheel drives that just feel they can go anyway and they drive onto the rocks. They drive across the Maas. Mets the most mets will take for ever to regenerate this this feeling I've got four wheel drive go everywhere not realizing the squashing underneath. That's probably not going to come back in our lifetime. Every step you take you find something new a really try to make people look and observe. Yes they do have blindness except for roses. I love roses but I wish I'd take much more notice and be more caring of what we have in the Bush because what we have is so special. It's unique it's nowhere else in the world what we have. Thanks to botanical artist. Philip Nikolsky and botanists. Laura Skates Dr Naval Macek Nick. You'll want to join me for this curious kind of talk me on twitter at Natasha Mitchell or email via the science fiction website and all hail to Australia's incredible native plants especially in twenty twenty turns out it's the UN year of plot health. "Region. A third of the world's congress plants of right hundreds of spacey's in the world. Yeah yes and yeah we've got. Yeah maybe a quarter or a third of them here in wwl. Very special. Why why. So many controversies plants in W Y definitely part of the reason. Why would be the fact that we've got such old ancient soil? So you know W is a very ancient landscape and soils have had a long time to have all been nutrients leached away so a lot about plants have had to adapt to get the nutrients in an unusual way and being kind is just one of those ways that they can do it. It's really incredible because we've had such a long history of isolation renowned botanist Dr Naval margin was director of the West Australian herbarium for many years. In fact as you'll hear next week he started as just a boy a boy. Incomplete love with canvas plants. Which is when he first met the extraordinary Rica. Erickson his story. I'm going to be chasing next week. He's lucky enough to even have a kind of risk plant named after a dresser March Anti. I'm totally jealous of that. I have to admit coming from Gondwanaland. When it broke up and USTRALIA move northwards westeners trailer was effectively separated from the rest of the world. Even the rest of Australia and plans to develop their own characteristics. Their own species developed out of a stock which was very Australian and certainly Gondwana origin. And I think what happened? They was the so many issues involved. The flowers and plants a Western Australia in collaboration with all sorts of other organisms fungi. Cetera as well as the animals and pollination in particular that the situation was just right for there to be a fantastic explosion of species in the southwest and draw were amongst those and certainly what happened with outdraws Rozelle son. Jews is that they've really adapted to living in a Mediterranean type climate. That is dry. Summers and wet winters. I watched the alive how they have survived and it's the old the better than the his ancient but also the new when when this been a fire in the new comes through and it is so amazing that the wind has being a fire. And it's just black and then every new plan has its moment of glory then and you can see it and you can find it in. You can see things you've not seen before and you think how long those seeds been sitting there waiting for this moment laws kind. Plants have adapted to Western Australia's extreme climate landscapes in all sorts of wild ways. Yeah so kind of plants that have a lot of them are so well adapted to not only capturing prey but also attracting them some of them use sense slacker. Kind of honey. Lie or milly kind of garbage sort of sent. Some of them have amazing. Uv light sort of patents which insects can say directs them into the TROTTA. Sticky plants adhesive traps sticky. His the pitfall trap little cut with a little lid and insects will climb up the side of the cup. Try and get some NAFTA at the back of the League and then they'll find the rim of the Cup is quite slippery and they will top lane. Yup that's it. Yeah there's a pool of digestive juices just waiting for them. The one that is probably the most famous would be the Venus flytrap. They've got that little snap trap with a leaves shut together really quick around the price. Venus fly traps are endemic to north and South Carolina in the US. We've also got the trickle area. It's like a little kind of Ladda or kind lock bag. I guess with a trap door usually. They're either underwater or in very very moist soil and water will Russian like vacuum that pulls the water in and pulls the prion as well bloody terrifying. Yeah exactly and the last kind The kind of plants that have a corkscrew trap and it's basically like a modified leaf underground. That kind of like a coil. Insects starts going inside the coil. The only way it can go always fullwood because as backwards facing his con back-back creepy. Isn't it the big question of your PhD? Nowadays how can even worse The coniferous plants. That you'll studying. Yeah yes that's it. Yes I I want to know. Basically how much do they actually rely? On the PRI- They capture to get the nutrient say nate. Sorry flies which had address her right. He had to catch them. Yeah I want to see whether there are patents in how kinda verse different kind of I plant saw. Do we say the ones that? Adp are bit less. Ooh We've got a little friend coming to join our interview bobtail Lizard Key. Dd wrestling clock. Dumpy tile thought That's a snake. That's just behind you. We might WANNA pull us the lead so I want to look at how much the kind of plants actually rely on the private that catching because they can get nutrients from the soil three they routes but they can also get nutrients from the pride that they catch what they leaves And I want to see what that nutrient bounce like. And whether there are any patterns you know some kind of response more diverse than others. And why are they? So I'm using stable isotope techniques some elements like nitrogen for example an essential nutrient had different versions of the atom. Some which have an extra neutron in that which just makes them a little bit. Heavier doesn't change them chemically. Just be heavier. If we took a hair sample from vegetarian person and a person that professor eating a lot of mate you would actually see in the head. Different levels of that nitrogen is tarp so the meat eater would have a high level of the heavy a- nitrogen isotope sorry especially the. Add little kind of plants. Don't really seem to be getting a lot of notch from private not that much different to Nankai diverse plants for me. What's interesting is why would they then be? Kinda verse What is because I've had to put a whole lot of Effort and energy into growing carnivorous features. That allow them to consume prion if they not extracting as much nutrient from private in. What's the point of putting that growing energy into something special lot that yeah exactly yeah? Amazing I mean amazing really. Isn't it but you get to do this work. Oh Yeah I feel very very lucky that I've been able to do this research. You talk about the idea of plant blindness a lot.

"I just don't know how to make that anymore. Clear these people. These families are being murdered while they're suffering a pandemic that these people possibly had a hand in and no one could care less. It gets under my skin of all things. It's always Yemen. I hope you'll read this for yourself. Saudi Arabia killing families and Sadat province for no reason residential areas. Do right because it's totally. Okay just to bomb. Any re- Yemen is just fair. Grant Fair game is apparently according to the humanitarian philanthropist of the US government that only care about freedom life. Apparently Yemen's don't count Yemenis. Don't count according to them or Palestinians. You know or Syrians or anybody. They choose to ignore for that moment. So pretty much everybody unless you have some kind of you know dollar sign above your head or political agenda. They can use other than that. You mean nothing to them. I don't know how that could be any more clear now. Speaking of the ships that were floating around right the Pentagon has fired the Navy captain. Who spoke out about the response? Which that's the story right here. Well actually before I get to that so the idea that they fired this captain. This captains spoke out saying that. It's it's wrong of them irresponsible of them to have people on the ships in the middle of this outbreak. Then they fired him for it why because he spoke the truth as we told you about they also put a bunch of these people they were on the ships were already sick and the only reason they got sick is because they put them in the middle of this pandemic will. They're forcing all of us to stay inside without any protection without any precautions and yeah they all got sick surprise surprise. It's almost like they don't care about these people right. It's almost like the. Us government doesn't care about its own soldiers weird but it forces them all out there and then guess what they get sick and then forces them into hotels and Guam. Because that's great for Guam. Right must ascend our sick people into another country because we can't take care of ourselves but here's the point. Sailors cheer the relieved. Captain Navy officials defend the firing and says navy captain. Brett Crozier was relieved of command of the US. As Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier on Thursday after a letter pen by crozier calling for the immediate evacuation of the vessel. Maybe because they're all sick. I mean. Imagine think about one of those cruise ships where everyone's sick on the ship and everyone's panicking imagine what it feels like to be on one of these ships were people are coming out sick all over the place. You're basically a floating death sentence right in the minds of the person I mean because you know we should know by now that it's not a severe being told at least to some degree but in the minds of these people right. We don't know what's happening. We don't know what this diseases suddenly you're on a ship and that's that's not that's wrong in so many ways to put these people that position but it also shows that they just don't care about these people. In general the safety right. The agenda is more important in these people's lives. These people safety view their health. Just like I said in the Iran situation when they had those two drone operators drawn up the top of the building and fly away the drones while Ron was bombing because they cared more about the drones than the two people had to man them so they didn't get bombed their million dollar drones. Fly them away but those same people said they were knocked off their feet probably two of the people that got traumatic brain injuries right but the bottom line was they cared more about the equipment than those two soldiers. Same thing here he this. This captain is a moral person. Obviously saying look we. Can't this needs to end. We can't allow these people to be on the ship while this is happening. He reached out science pen the letter instead. They need to be removed to prevent the outbreak which was leaked to the press now. I don't know if that was leaked by him or somebody else. It's kind of relevant. The ship is right now. Dr Naval Base in Guam as I showed you because they're basically offloading all they're sick people into hotel there because that was totally useless right. Send up all these soldiers to the dock into their place in sick bed and hotel. Maybe just maybe it's because these people will maybe already sick and maybe these are people that are trying to hide. I thought the other day. But that's just a random theory right. Imagine if these are maybe some people got sick from something else from before riding this just some way to hide the trail. Just make sense why they would send these people out on these ships only to get sick and then document another country just making sense but as it goes on to say after crozier's dismissal video surfaced online of sailors cheering and clapping for the relief. Captain as part of the Roosevelt for the last time one sailor said quote. Now that's how you send out one of the greatest captains we ever had. So they're firing one of the greatest capper's they ever had because he dared to tell the truth. That's the world we that's the world in which the government under which we live acting. Us Navy secretary. Thomas Model defended the decision to fire. Of course he did because he still works under that. Government mildly said Crozier put the ship and crew at risk by sending a letter. Oh did he or did he possibly try to save lives by letting the he sent the letter to the military right. That's what it says. May Mama came when we make sure I did misunderstand that well it does say was leaked to the press so let's just assume that he gets out of the press because that's probably what the story is anyway but I I read something earlier today and I didn't think it said the sound didn't think it sounded like that but let's just take fate for for sake of conversation. Let's say that he wanted to the press which that seems like what. This article says so relieved the press because he probably. I tried to say something right. I mean you can almost guarantee that. That's how do we know how the military and command brooks and I probably said why are we doing this? People are getting sick and they said because we're ordered to and we can do about it so then he finally said okay. We'll these people are going to die so he sent out a letter right so you can ask yourself with that wrong of him. If he truly believe people's lives were at risk. Was it wrong for him to do that? Well sure in the GOVERNANCE MINDSET. It is right. The mindset of the military does but for an honest moral human being we realize that that's just their that's their paradox. That's their their social structure and the reality is what's more important human life and morals and the law right but the reality is and their side of the world in way they're treating Julian assange. Is that releasing secrets. True or not that. Save lives are not is not okay. We need to see that by now. I mean every single time. Whistleblower comes out exposes one of their crimes. They attack them appointment prison guys. That's really happening. So when this guy comes out and says hey we remove these ships because because this exactly is going to happen right? He pretty much correct right. You can see that. They're pretty much only putting people at risk. We have to see what really happened. And that's why people cheered when he walked away. It's just it's just disgusting to see this continuous. They care more about what they're trying to accomplish than anything else you could put in front of you and to end the same discussion regard to war. But with Ron Mitterrand's always kinda focused the US government and it still is there still potentially right now building towards some kind of action against Iran and Iraq. I'm hearing discussions about false flags being setup constantly. Somebody shared a discussion with me about one of the ships. They were discussing actually one of these ships. I've seen theories about the idea that one of these floating ships of sick people are potentially just a ploy to create some kind of false flag idea. Maybe there's nobody on him at all or who knows right but I heard that one of the briefings. The guy went off and just basically outlined everything that was on the ship. We have this many planes and this meaning to have a nuclear reactor. We've got this and we've got that and as was pointed out to me that is on. I agree that's odd. Why they're always so tight lipped. Suddenly he's naming off everything. That's on this ship Brian. So just consider that so. Suddenly the ship is you know attacked or blows up one day. Ask yourself what's going on and I can almost promise you if that happens. It's going to be blended Iran but we are seeing this happen with Iran is clearly the focus but the reality we need to see. Is that the rest of the world is saying. Look we're we? We need to stop this. They're bypassing US SANCTIONS. Even being some of the ones that were supporting them before this now. They're saying we need to help. Iran and I just realized how stark of an example that is even the people that supported their sanctions are now helping Iran. Because they see what's going on and the only one in the world that is maintaining that they need to keep suffering is the US government as everyone including their allies including sanction partners are circumventing their own sanctions to bring food and medical equipment to Iran the US government is forcing them in further. That's who they are. That's Pompilio for you. That's what you need to see at all costs human life be damned the. Us has no moral duty to easier on sanctions according to Donald Trump. So He's right and the rest of the world is wrong. Sure as possible but I think we can see that either being deceived by the MANIAC NEO. Cons that are surrounding him or he's always been part of that problem either way. The only thing they have is a moral duty to stop killing people. They just don't care and speaking of the lies. I just had to include this before we go. This really needs to show you how obvious this all this. How many times? Netanyahu has lied and you realize how many times Netanyahu has been the very person that's provided the so called intelligence that has created what the US did with Bolton. That's what happened the very the limpet mines and the whole story. Netanyahu gave him intelligent. They said Iran was a credible threat. And we now know all that was. Is Ron Moving? Their ships in their own ports didn't even have evidence of what was on those ships right and obviously nothing happened except US blustering an action. That's what happened. That guy you're staring at he lied. That's what he does. They lie about this stuff. You don't times. He's been caught lying about so-called evidence about Ron. We'll add another one. Netanyahu shared a fake video as proof of Iran virus. Cover up now. Why would he want to sell that narrative because that's what they've been trying to do? I've been showing you. Why say Iran's covering up why Iran can't handle it when they're like the fifth on the list now the US is way ahead of everybody? China's still up there Italy Spain South Korea. These groups are all above wrong situation right now. More severe. I should say but they're constantly trying to make a seem like a. Ron Can't handle it that. Iran's covering it up even the beginning they tried to make like Ron was responsible that came from Netanyahu that came from the same usual suspects that trying to argue that they started it just like they said China started. Its oldest. They're taking advantage of the political situation. Please consider that in the same way the. Us is blaming China right. Now there's obvious agendas here now. Here's the point is it says behind the scene several hours. Later Netanyahu's office realized the video had nothing to do with the wrong or with the crow virus crisis. Apparently it was a clip from a pandemic in two thousand seven Hallmark Channel. Many series water. You know you tell me. That's guys this is what they always do. This is meant to manipulate people. He's taking some clip from two thousand seven mini series and trying to sell it to his cabinet. As the fact that Iran is covering up their virus problem. Please let that reflect on every other time. They've tried to sell you intelligence on Iran. I'm going to bring this up every damn time. I WANNA start cataloging the rest of them to the the tiny all the CD's and everything. And the the I said No. That's all fake intelligence from two years ago right. I mean it's happened over and over. And he put it to bed and walked away all he cares about his giving one more. Lie Out there to manipulate you just enough to be able to execute agenda and with the with virus happening. It's going to be that much easier when Justin. This is exactly the point. This has noticed how as soon as the US eclipsed on in cove nineteen cases..

There's never Campbell was a marine and doesn't get to do it on marine stuff. I have missed that. She was a Maria, Dr naval doctors. All right that com. March versa. One of camp doctoring, she wrote a script combat doctor. Yes, she'd fight g the Dutch. They also mentioned that she speaks eight languages. And then later like heck's ipad that is in Chinese. Can't fix her phone. That that kind of foreshadowing drove me so much. Very hard. It's way. Okay. Before you get okay. What do you think? I think I think I think I know what it is which is pretty much use it with a little more complexity. So the guy is trying to build the tallest building in the world at a certain point. 'cause measures stream always things. It's our one. At a certain point that the bad guy. The main bad guy comes to him who represents like the the organized crime bad guys. And he says unless you pay us money, we're gonna make sure your labor force goes away. We're gonna make sure you don't you're not able to build this building. So the guy pays them money. But he puts a digital trace on that money. And and as a result all of the nefarious people that the main guy is working for a revealed. So the names that are on the jump drive are the names of the the leaders the organiz jumping on what you're saying. Because I remember that is so you don't so baiter computer screen that like this to down a lot of those basically like the idea is that he for he flipped the blackmail by finding out where who who basically. So he has all of the bad guys on a hard drive. So at any point he can say. Say I can blackmail you basically stop blackmail like it's the same thing is like when there's like, well, they've gotta jump drive with all the names of all of our undercover spies. And by the way, that jump drive was gigantic. Big control. It looked like a drone. It was just gonna. I was like this is so weird. You know? It reminded me of a really nice travel toothbrush holder. Yes. Sure or a fan because he allow greater. Like a fancy vibe where to you buy for a very serious girlfriend. I like. I feel like when shopping for person very. Visit she's. She's a lady herself. She's Molly in Mali's games. She. Mali's game. I have. I walked twice on a plane fell asleep twice on a plane. I loved it for the skiing scenes, and that was about it. Kevin Costner being angry. Listen, I was in a dark place when I watched last year's Academy Award screeners, and I like them all there was not a movie, I did not. I watched everything like, Yep. Got like. I was in the small. Hollywood small apartment in Montreal. Do it only out. My only was screeners. Every what do we got? Now. Great also will be a tie these terrific. You were homesick for Hollywood. I was I needed to get. Holly. Homerun couldn't get there. Fast. The park this movie. Also, so the first thing rec- ten years after the shower. The movie. Early at the beginning camps Campbell who they could've made just slightly more competent, they show her being the the dumbest like with technology with mean. Yes, she knows around top. But technology also doing everyone has she wanted him to do it. I think was the thing just wanted to connect with him. Yes. He just likes to have him. Do it. Okay. But they like restart his phone phone usually those characters be so dumb. You're they're making dump. But I think they were trying to show that she likes him and likes having him do things for her. I think so too. Also foreshadowing thing for a fantastic pay off later. I would've loved it was the. Oh, that's dumb. It's such a I I was beyond emotion at that point. Okay. Okay. Say showed up to Nick Campbell for not NEF gambling it up. She's really like. During really was like I wanted her to have more action. Like, I loved the fight at the end. I wanted to kick even more because she's clearly able to that seen the comes so much later..
