"dr mercy" Discussed on Fat Mascara
"So many people doing hot takes on this as well last week. Linda evangelista revealed that after she got cool sculpting procedure that destroys fat cells. She developed disfiguring masset. So if you're not familiar with cool sculpting. I'm we've actually talked about this. I'm sure on the show and we've had plastic surgeons that have talked about it. Basically the device has these little paddles. I've actually had it done on me for five seconds just to see what it felt like one at an event at one point and it sucks in like a vacuum the skin and then the colds is applied to that and the fat cells freeze and die. Your skin doesn't freeze on top. Just the fat cells. They're very sensitive to cold and then over the course of three to five months. Your body metabolize. The i'll just call them dead fat cells and they disappear so you can lose a tiny bit of fat. This way will after she got this. She developed p. A. h. or paradoxical adipose hyperplasia. It's basically like these lumps that form afterwards with some more fat cells. Sometimes so like more fat cells grew but Scar tissue in them as well and they can be very difficult to get rid of. So i was reading a bunch of studies about doctors who have tried to get rid of them after the fact. And sometimes you need liposuction. But sometimes that doesn't work well. The loss lawsuit is talking about how in the research one in twenty thousand people supposed to be a chance to develop. Pa ph but if you look into it. It seems to be much much more common. In fact one study done this year. In canada show. It could be as communist one in six hundred sixty. Six people develop this so linda's lawyers were talking about how not only was. She not made aware that. This was a complication. That isn't as rare as one might think. The company didn't even have that in its marketing. Materials are on its website till well after she got the procedure herself and she says it's been horrible physically as well as emotionally hirsute sink seeking. Excuse me fifty million dollars in damages for her and loss of work. At first. I was like okay. They're trying to make a point. You know when you make a lawsuit and they do like this huge number just to get a lot of press for it But then i was thinking you know. She was one of the biggest models ever if she had been working with past five years. Like some really great deals. I lost cindy crawford or something. Like that i mean. I don't know the fifty million dollars but she is the kind of person that would make millions of dollars from her appearance. Whereas you and. I get zero dollars because of how we look. Do you know what i mean like. Maybe i couldn't. I couldn't go to work. You know for year. I might lose my year salary and then the money for distress. If she doesn't go to work for a year because of how she looks she would lose millions. Do you understand but maybe not put it into perspective. I think about like all right now. You're making everybody feel weird with this fifty million dollar number but the thing online is that like people were coming at her forgetting this procedure. That was a choice and now complaining about it just because the procedure is a choice. Doesn't mean that it shouldn't be safe and you should be aware of the risks. We're going to judge her duly you already. You're going to judge someone for aging maybe gaining a little weight. Then they try and take care of it and then to their control and now we're judging them for trying to take care of it. The the yellow. No the hot takes were like. Wow we really hate. Women don't are really really felt like that i. There's a writer i liked. Joe lean edgar. She posts on instagram. A lot and she does a lot of writing like like new beauties used to write for a lower and she had my take personally which is the opposite of that which is like we can't now judge people for the choices they make like you can judge the lawsuit all you want and maybe the numbers ridiculous but like you do plenty of like i just had my neuroma foot surgery. That was a choice. i didn't need it. I'm fine without it but if there had been a complication no one was going to judge me for it. But because it was based on her appearance people were judging her. I think yeah. I think people felt like well you know. Why should we have sympathy. You know she got cosmetic surgery. I think there you know there was just not a lot of Not a lot of kindness. Yes thrown her way. There is a lot to unpack their. This is our new segment. I think there's a lot that we can talk about an about. How judge people for making aesthetic choices for sure. You know if sympathy is what. I think we needed more of do know what we'll give that to you. This new show that. I wanted to talk about two that i watched on. Tlc it's called dr mercy. She's a dermatologist. In chicago and i was like. Oh it's going to be like dr pimple popper kind of show no it's about medical dermatology It follows the chicago dermatologist. Her name is mercy odhiambo and she is the founder of lily aesthetics. She it's a fascinating look at the medical profession. And if you're into like dermatology and the medical profession this is one of those surgeries shows. This is not for the faint of heart but my heart was breaking for some of the patients in the first episode because these are people who have quote unquote cosmetic issues but things like neurofibromatosis which is like where you develop these bumps all over your body things that aren't just like we can never judge what an aesthetic choice that another person makes. It's like dr. Heather widows told us like you don't get to say that linda evangelista is a little bit of fat is not as devastating to her as somebody else's like moles all over their body. You know what i mean like. Each person is unique with how they are affected by their appearance. And i think if you're not agreeing with me watch an episode of the show and you absolutely will and they're actually streaming it online so get put a link so you don't need to like figure out television all.

"We welcome back to make playing surgeon general of the united states. The vet emergency dr mercy. Welcome back to make it plain. How are you sir thank you. I'm doing well. I'm being well and to be back in. Have you been. I've been okay you know hanging in here Watching is everyone else has With great concern and caution These or at least the delta area there on others and some of the other things that are going on. And i know today you wanna talk to us about boost shots and i think last. We talked you weren't sure yet if a win but now we've got the answer to that known we do we do. Hey bankin rewind for abby. Tell you you know. Us how i was doing. I didn't give you the subtext behind. That which is i. I'm doing well overall but today on the ambiance. I've got my kids on my mind. Because there was a there was a case at their school and My my son's class has worn team. And so we're trying to figure out how to juggle everything with childcare. And i just mentioned that because this is real life for all of us right is going through all this stuff trying to figure it out at a you know be a good mom and dad had a big good center. Daughter had make it all work and so It's real over here and Thankfully our kids refine and they're great but Gives me an appreciation for parents. Going through in around the country is get their kids back to school. But you know the the booster shot said the about this. Is i know the topic. That's been in the news a lot now the last of weeks in particular but even for months before that so let me put. The boosters context the booster shots number one are meant to extend the protection that people have already been getting from the vaccines. It's kind of like when you're you put gas in your car and it helps your car run. Then you got refill at some point. It doesn't mean the gas in work. It means that you need a refill and we see this actually with a lot of vaccines that sometimes you need multiple shots to get a sustained level of protection and sometimes you need booster shots over time to keep your level of protection high and right now the recent recommendations from the fda an cdc are as follows if you've gotten the pfizer shot and if you're six months out from that and if you're in a higher risk category you can now get a booster. So what does it mean to be in a high risk category means. You're you fall into one of three groups. Either you're over sixty five or you've got other medical conditions that put you at higher risk for bad outcomes. Covert and those include conditions like heart disease diabetes lung disease or obesity. And the third category. Is that you either. Live or work in a place where you are. You're at higher risk of exposure to kobe. Nineteen that could mean. You're a healthcare worker. Could mean you work in a grocery store you might live in a homeless shelter for incarcerated population. So these are the folks were eligible in one last theologists as that we're talking about the pfizer vaccine recipients here but obviously there are millions of people in america who got the maderno vaccine and the johnson and johnson vaccine. Their health matters just as much their protection is just as important as anyone else's and so what's happening right now. Is that the food and drug administration. The fda is working closely with madonna nj to get their data on those booster shots so they can assess quickly and then make a recommendation for people who got dern j. j. about their boosters. I think it's very likely that they will require booster shots. Mckernan jj recipients. It's just a question of when the fda is working as fast as it can to get in processed data from the companies and first of all. Thanks for sharing about your chosen family. That's another issue covered extensively with randi weingarten. The prison american federation of teachers and others as the schools reopened. We know what our caves have been exposed. Who so thank you for raising that grand. Your kids safe. We hope that all the kids are safe as well when we talk about these. These boosters no do we have confidence that these boosters will help in terms of protecting people from the ongoing spreading the vaccine and current variants. That are out there. Good question and fortunately we do have a growing body of data including from israel which is actually a about a month or two ahead of us in terms of administering the vaccine. They started earlier than us and they actually have been boosting people until we have data from them about the impact of the booster. And what's really interesting is that it does look like. The boosters are very effective in protecting people against in nineteen Against the worst koby nineteen hospitalization severe illness but even against mild to moderate illness. And and why does this matter while. Here's why because obviously the most important goal of the vaccine is keep you out of the hospital to save your life hands down and thankfully they've been doing that. The booster will make sure that protection continues but we also know that if you get 'em moderate case if kobe nineteen you could be down and out for weeks. We know that when people even get mild to moderate cases that they can have something called long. Kobe syndrome where they have fatigue and chest pain shortness of breath for weeks and months after their infection. We know that even mild moderate cases mean that people get pulled out of work and they have to quarantine and that means a workplaces in schools can be at risk. So reducing the number of cases. We have Is is what the boosters will help us do in. There's evidence already from israel. That's exactly what they are doing and finally about the variance into the good news. Is that the vaccines we have have been effective against all the variance that we've seen today you know some more effective than others but all overall Quite effective in keeping people especially out of the hospital in saving their lives. We've been fortunate in that regard now. Nobody can predict the future entirely. And part of the reason we've gotta get kobina under control is so that we reduce the risk of new variants developing down the line Because over time it's very possible. Some variant will come up. That may evade the protection. We have the vaccines as we've gotta move really fast to get cases down not just in the us but around the world more m. ip after this message from colson whitehead the two time pulitzer prize winning author of the underground railroad and the nickel boys comes another new york times bestseller harlem shuffle a gloriously entertaining crime novel set in nineteen sixties new york city. "Pfizer met with the cdc july twelfth about the need for boosters laid out their case laid out the israeli data. Cdc disagreed at the time said they had conflicting data. Israel ends up being right cd. Essentially agrees with pfizer's case this week. Can you talk about why. The initial data wasn't compelling back in july. And i sort of asked this question because in general sometimes it feels like if i wanna know what's gonna happen in the us. With regard to cova decisions. I need to like follow. The israeli news like do you sometimes. Do you wish we had more information. Faster here is about. Is it about just looking for more data in the. Us like do you feel like the cdc is getting information and data fast enough. Well hotel you. John is somebody who loves numbers and data. I always wanted yesterday. It's all he's too late for me but look you. You're pointing to his legitimate challenge that we have in the united states. It's been a problem for many many years. Which is we have fragmented data systems in our country. We have a public health infrastructure. That has been underfunded has eroded. Over the years we have so many different systems. Don't always talk to each other. And so with other countries which have more centralized and data Out systems which have invested more in public health. More broadly able to extract him pull in data from what's happening around the country much more efficiently than we are at something we have to fix that. We have to get better at by the country in. Its y my hope is coming out of this pandemic that we will recognize those longer term investments in infrastructure public health infrastructure or absolutely essential so. We can understand more quickly. What's going on with that. Being said in. Keeping many israelis actually started their vaccinations and ended up vaccine much larger portion of population earlier than we did right so from a timetable perspective There ahead of the united states in much of the world but we we saw the israeli data. We saw eight from other countries. But the cdc needed to do was to gather the data from here as well and look at everything in totality when you're always tightened. Scientists don't trust single source of data may be well done etc. You need to collaborate because you're just inevitably various factories. You can't control or data sets and so when they started to see a pattern emerging john and this pattern in particular became clear in over recent days when multiple data sets from the. Us came through data from healthcare workers data from long term care facility residents data from york state as well as what was called the ivy Cohort which is group. More than twenty is held simpson uniform states. All of that. Data's started to point to the same pattern is reduction in protection against mild to modern disease with a still high protection against the disease. That's when it became clear. There's a pattern here is trickier. We see where it's going and that's how we act. Dr mercy thank you so much for joining pod save america again come back anytime we We love having you. Thanks so much. John with you take care..

Thank you carry family. I love the love youtube shirt. Thank you all right. Enough of that nonsense brand comes please doesn't sound like the wearing masks in the carroll county jail the need to step up. My wife texted me last night because all the stuff you know they go to school. My kids there. They were great wearing their mass. No problems whatsoever and my wife's like maybe we should take them out and put them into a private school. Why i don't wanna take them away from their friends and stuff all districts. Not using masks. But i think right. Now it's a it's aachen. Yeah but i if it goes that way. I mean i'm gonna tell because it go back today. I'm going to tell her a little while. Actually just have them where their masks. I mean the the last year not gonna fight. And i think they're not going to be the only ones wearing masks and school districts. Follow be leader. Yeah gonna comeback. The governor made it pretty clear yesterday. That every kid should be wearing one. Yeah though he has ordered that he's left it up to the school districts to decide and pretty much told them the way they should decide. Yeah but Didn't require it. Anti bashir in kentucky yesterday made it Pretty clear that the mass mandate might be coming back for everybody not at that point yet. He did say that there won't be shutdowns. And you know social distancing requirements things like data about. He says because the vaccines out there. We don't need that but that in the next breath he's saying that hospitalizations could hit their highest level at any point during the pandemic by the end of this week and booster shots at all. They're talking yeah. Eight months is about the time. They think that people are going to have to get that second shot. Yeah though the guidance hasn't come from the fda or the cdc yet but I think more doctors right this minute or worried about getting the people who haven't gotten any shot yeah vaccinated because yeah you know. I saw mercy. Doctor said yesterday that of everybody they've treated. It's still like ninety. Eight percents are unvaccinated people. I know and put these horrible these people in these horrible states on the news guard. I was like oh jeez. It's like those people like the holes in their throats from smoking right. A doctors are frustrated. Three months right. This dr mercy was i mean. He's really frustrated. Passed this. We don't have to be in this situation. Yeah if more people would have taken vaccine you don't think this is about the the The hospital hospitalization and stuff. It's still going up up up. We have plateaued yet but also people are leaving as well. The hospital obviously right. They're getting better and lead a checking in checking out. I mean the concern that had yesterday is that you know that guy who has heart attack or the person that breaks bone or something like that ended up the emergency room a whole lot longer and not getting treatment because they're dealing with so many people who weren't vaccinated cove. Yeah but you know whatever. We're vaccinated once my wife she'll We'll decide when But that's the thing we go to a doctor like okay if you catch kovic. You're against the vaccine. Then you shouldn't be allowed to go to the hospital then because you don't believe in that it doesn't work that way. I mean they're gonna take care of anybody. I don't know if you're if you're a so up against the vaccine then when you get sick. Don't bother to our doctors because you don't trust them sudden. You're really interested in medicine that kind of advances. Hey can you help me with this. Yeah get the vaccine. Aligarh love and goes lakota. Goes back today. Yeah and they at the last minute ordered mass for everybody. Yeah now where. Protesters parents kids out in front of the board of education yesterday. Keep your be interested to see how well that works. You know last year. He said they had four thousand of students did virtual learning even though they were opened through most of the whole school year lakota and this year. That number. Sound three hundred right. Because he's yeah because these parents like i ca. I have to do my job to see if they you know. The ones are really object to having kids. It's because of that. Having homeschooling three school years we had the the end of the school year before that was fact that all of last year. Now the start of.

You have to talk about what you told screaming how vaccines work the more people. That can't wait. It's a very bad connection friend. I want you to be heard. I want you to be heard. It's terrible connection can speak into the phone. I can you hear me now. You've no comparison. Now you're speaking into the phone okay the way vaccines work. If more people don't get vaccinating they become safe spaces for the virus that means the virus can mutate and can become resilient to people who are vaccinated and become a pose a threat. Okay that's not true. It's simply not true. Okay what you said is true. Okay so for the record. What i believe you told a nonsense go on makes it biology right. Yeah okay basic biology. That people who are vaccinated are likely to be reinfected by variant because people did not take the vaccine got the variant and will pass it onto them because the vaccine is so weak that a can't handle a variant every single statement from the cdc has stated that it can handle the delta variant that the vaccine is perfectly capable of handling the delta vary and might i add that if the vaccine is that pathetic that any variant will kill you. Why take it okay. So that's it. Thank you for calling appreciate it. And let's see russ in simi valley california. Hello good morning. Yes listen to a broadcast about pataki saying that. We saw miguel's report physician and fellow at the brookings institution dr patel. She's a former obama white house. Health policy director and msnbc medical contributor dr patel. It's to see this morning. This is gut wrenching. It's frustrating obviously given all we've been through all the work that's gone in to get us to this place. How do we change this trajectory. We appear to be on right now. Yeah willie one word vaccination. I think that it's incredibly clear that the vaccine that we have are effective. And what we're trying to do. I won't even call it herd immunity confusing to say that what we're trying to do is just reach a goal where the majority of people at one hundred percent because we are going to have kids and people who can't get back scenes for different reasons but we're the majority of people are vaccinated and it protects the unvaccinated. This is a simple cut of epidemiology public health. One oh one short vet willing. We're gonna continue to see these rolling waves around the country in various pockets larger numbers in some areas. But don't think that just because you live in a part of connecticut vermont or another area of the country southern california where if you have an area that's highly vaccinated at that the people who are not vaccinated are still not susceptible. Let me say it another way. Everybody is vulnerable at some point. And i will just take a different with the cdc director. Obviously she's much more kind of in the data than i am but there's no harm in talking about highly risky studying higher settings like indoors where multiple people who are not vaccinated might gather with vaccinated people and just having everyone follow the same rules. Because what we're seeing right now really is people aren't doing it. We're we're we're kinda trusting. Everyone and i don't see a reason to do that. Do you think dr patel that los angeles county is kind of a leading indicator aware places across the country may be headed. We know about the states with low vaccination rates many of them across the south. But you mentioned the states that have done well. In terms of vaccination connecticut the northeast new york massachusetts maine up in up in through the new england. Area are those places susceptible now to rollbacks in terms of the kind of restrictions we might see they are and let me just say even more than los angeles county by the way i really do. Praised the public health officials there. You're sticking their necks out on the line. They're not popular people. These days but i would say we can look to other countries we can look to israel. We can look to parts of what the u k has had to do. Ignore what boris johnson. His bed looking at local public health officials in ministry of health officials are doing on the ground there australia. Other parts of the eu. They are kind of what we would call canaries in the coal mine. They have put back in indoor masks and it simply for this reason. Vaccines do protective. They protect us from possibles. Ation death as we've said unvaccinated people with a variant willie that his novel that we don't understand that it's highly transmissible highly. Infectious minute to give it to each other. What is the harm when you're with strangers to wear a mask indoors especially in close contact setting. Why are we taking a risk that we don't need to take. When we have a very simple preventative measure for now until we get more people vaccinated and that's really the bottom line so dr patel a given what you just said and the simplicity of it because science is about facts but health is about communication and is about helping a population understand. What's best for them to live. Long healthy lives. What is happening here. What is the predominant reason. That people are not getting vaccinated. What are you hearing. I'm a primary care physician. So i'm hearing a lot of different things including large sources of misinformation. I think that's why you're talking to the surgeon. General number one people have the amount of misinformation has outweighed the facts science. I may be the only person in a fifteen minute. Visit telling people about what the facts on in the data and journals. Tell us but. I've got ninety nine point nine percent of people's lives dominated by facebook whatsapp groups and commonly cut of now. The midst unfortunately seemed like facts that this interferes with your dna that it affects your fertility that it can affect future pregnancies that the government rushed this and that this is a conspiracy to help pharmaceutical company. I've heard it all. I don't think there's one piece of misinformation. I haven't heard including that this causes you to become magnetic and what i've learned makeover month. You can't shame them. You cannot blame them. Have to actually kind of starting to empathize and say you know. I thought this might be kind of fast. And here's what i've learned. Here's why my twenty year. Latina did want this vaccine. Because she saw her sister get hospitalized and become dependent on oxygen at her age. So i think it's a very different. I honestly what we had to do. Ten years ago to fight misinformation about affordable care act access to health care so it's different misinformation in different forms but exploited by multiple media than multiple opportunities. Well absolutely important not to shame or blame. The people who've been misinformed. That would be wrong but the leaders especially the republicans and those who funnel donald trump and donald trump himself choosing to be negligent choosing to misinform people. Maybe even Media organizations choosing to have hosts that miss informed people that is choosing to be negligent that is malpractice and that is on them and it will be what happens this country on them. Here's a warning and this is just so chilling the warning that the us surgeon general. Dr vedic more the issued about misinformation when it comes to covert nineteen. Dr mercy released. A surgeon general's advisory yesterday declaring the rise of misinformation online and urgent threat calling on social media companies to take action. Today we live in a world where misinformation poses an imminent and insidious threat to our nation's health..

"I mean, we've seen Red States, especially in the South, doing worse in vaccination rates and now in infection rates. I mean, what is the plan to try to get people on board? You're you're right that we have an ongoing challenge to get people vaccinated that said, we've been able to administer more than 320 million doses of vaccine in our country, which is extraordinary. And the vaccinations if you especially if you look at seniors where we were seeing the greatest proportion of deaths and hospitalizations that has been extraordinary, we have close to 90%. Seniors who have had at least one shot, so a lot of progress in the older groups But I am concerned and particularly about younger groups. What's really worrying me. Lulu, though, is the misinformation that is circulating about the vaccines. We know from polls that two thirds People who are unvaccinated either believe the common myths about Covid 19 vaccination or think they may be true. It's like you can get covid from the vaccine, which is absolutely not true. Ornaments like the vaccine causes infertility, which also has no basis in evidence. And so what we have to do is to think about how to better combat this misinformation. We've got a few strategies to do it number one. We're working closely with Doctors and nurses and other health care providers. Given that they are extraordinarily trusted sources of 80% of People say they want to talk to their health care provider before making a decision about the vaccine, so we are working with them, including getting the vaccine into their office. We're also trying to make it easier for people to get vaccinated by creating more on site vaccination efforts, particularly with Employers in schools as well as more mobile units that can help bring vaccine to where people are Dr Mercy, though some say getting full FDA approval for the vaccines would help you can hear there are on TV on Fox at being called an experimental vaccine, which it isn't of course. But why hasn't full approval happened yet? Well, it's it's a very important point you're raising, which is the distance is not experimental. And that's an important thing to emphasize here because we have more experience with this vaccine and with many other vaccines at this stage because of how many people have received it, why hasn't it been fully approved yet? The FDA now has the data and the application from two companies Pfizer and Moderna for, uh, be your full approval. If you will. Now the FDA is going through its process. We've got to let them look at that those reams and reams of data that have been submitted And my expectation is that they will issue a decision as quickly as possible. They know what's at stake here, which is they know that some people you know, will feel more comfortable with the vaccine once they are we talking weeks months. I think it's possible we will see something toward the end of the summer or early early fall. But you know, the bottom line is the FDA has to pursue its process thoroughly and completely. What we don't want Lulu is we don't want people to say Oh, this was a rushed process. They're going to be careful about this, but they're going to move as quickly as they can. Dr Murthy. Did we drop mask mandates too soon, though, looking at these rising infection numbers, I mean, President Biden declared victory was that too early? Wasn't mine did not declare victory. What He did declare signs of progress and is a very important point because we are not done with this pandemic by any stretch, and I can tell you from my personal conversations of the president. He knows that, um, bottom line with masks, though, and what they see when the CBC announced six weeks ago or so that people now have the choice about whether to wear masks because people who are fully vaccinated Had both a low risk of both transmitting the virus from getting the virus themselves. That decision did not mean that localities cannot make decisions about mass mandates based on what is happening in their community. And you already starting to see that some communities where vaccination rates are low and where cases are arising, are making the decision to go back. Towards having more restricted mass guidance. And and that's okay. You know you want this guidance Taylor. We've gone beyond the point where we're going to issue a broad mandate for the entire country because there are parts of the country Lulu where vaccination movies are really high, and cases are really low. That may concern, though, is that there are many pockets where vaccination rates are so low. That is where we are seeing the growth of cases, especially driven by the delta very in That surgeon General Vivek Murthy. Thank you very much. Thank you so much. Lily, take care. Joining me now is NPR White House correspondent Tamara Keith. Hello, Good morning, More than a year into this crisis with more than 600,000 Americans dead. I mean, it hurts to even say that number. The federal government's response is Still subject to the pressures of partisan politics. I mean, what's your assessment of how the Biden administration is handling this next phase of the pandemic? I mean, we just heard Vivek Murthy there. Talking about, you know some of the limitations. Yeah, And as we just heard, he described a strategy that they've been describing for about two months now, which is this idea of just making vaccines available in as many places as possible and and and making it available from trusted sources like family doctors and pediatricians. You know, the other thing that they have been doing is community organizing style door knocking, where volunteers go door to door talking to members of their community about the benefits of vaccines. But What has happened, as the White House has talked about. The strategy is that, uh, right wing politicians, Republican politicians and others on conservative media have have misconstrued what's happening. Uh and and it is then further feeding hesitancy that is clearly out. There they are. They conservatives bristle at the idea of the government trying to tell them what to do, especially when it comes to vaccines. And and conservative politicians have have described this door knocking as if they're coming to find you, which is absolutely not what is happening, and this points to a bind that the White House is in. There are a lot of public health people who are arguing for the White House to put vaccine mandates in place or to publicly advocate for business in schools to put mandates out there..

"Effective vaccination campaign. Meet our goal of ministry 100 million shots. 1st 100 days in office that hydra are higher than 50 where the U. S is right now. When I announce to you all said, it's not possible. Come on, give me a break. Man. Good start killed by them wrestle a bit when asked of his vaccine plan, his ambitious enough, But there are big questions going forward as the covert death toll friends declined past 600,000. In the coming months here to answer some of them. The president's nominee for surgeon general Doctor effect Murthy, Dr Mercy, thank you for joining us this morning. Let's let's talk about that goal for 100 million vaccines in 100 days. As you know, it's many experts have weighed in saying the plan is not ambitious enough. We need to do better. Can we do better? Will we do better? Well, thanks, George. It's great to be with you today, you know is he is President. Biden said he set a goal of 100 million shots in his 1st 100 days in office. And that it's a floor. It's not a ceiling. It's also golden reflects the realities or we face will could go right. But also what could go wrong. I think President Biden fully understands is a larger goal here. As we all do, which is that we've got a backstage as many Americans as possible. That's gonna take a lot of work work, dispelling misinformation working on the supply, increasing distribution channels. That's some of what the vaccine plan that he announced over the last week is intended to achieve Are there ways to increase the supply number one and number two on the distribution. It appears at least in these first vaccines that have gone out. They've been going largely toe wealthier areas of the country, largely the wider areas of the country. Is there a way to get more equitable distribution? And increase the supply. Well, it's the right question, George because success has to be gauged not just by the number of vaccines we deliver, but also by how fairly we deliver those vaccines. How equitably We deliver them. We already know from the covert crisis over the past year that there's certain communities that have been hard hit by this virus that rural communities have a harder time getting access to resources. Communities of color have experienced more cases and deaths. That seniors had have struggled, especially those in long term facilities. And what we've got to do here is not just again increased supply, which we can do, using the Defense Production act, making specific syringes that can extract more. Vaccine from the Fizer bottles, But we've also gotta set up that kind of distribution channels like mobile units like strategically placed Kemeny vaccination centers that can reach people who traditionally are hard to reach and don't have access to health care. Lastly, George, we gotta track our progress. You've got to make sure that we have data on where the vaccine is being administered so that we can ensure that it in fact, is being distributed equitably. How about the next vaccine that Johnson and Johnson vaccine is that close to approval? Well, we're hopeful that we'll get good news on that front, George because the truth is the more vaccine. That we have in terms of options in terms of supplying more quickly will be able to vaccinate the country. But what's important is that we focus and plan for what we have right now. And you know, the goal of achieving 100 million shots and 100 days is one That is achievable with the supply that we have, and they were anticipating from Liza and from Madonna, and that's what we've got to focus on. So we hope for the best, but we got a plan for the situation we have now. I want to ask you about this variant of the covert that is now in the United Kingdom. At least 20 states say it's here now as well, The British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said this week there is evidence that it is more deadly. Another strange. I know that last month, you said we didn't have enough evidence to say that it's more deadly. Has that changed? I'm glad you're bringing this up George because they're very answer very concerning. But they're not surprising because this is what viruses do. They mutate They change. And we should expect that. But here's what we know. We know that the variant not just the UK Berrien but likely this South Africa very in the Brazilian Berry, MP one. Likely to be more transmissible on dwell. There's some early data that was reported on earlier this week that the UK bury it may in fact, be more deadly. We still need more data to clearly understand the answer to that question. But here's a larger lesson George from the variance they are really a shot across the bow. The virus is basically telling us that it's going to continue to change and we've got to be ready for it. And what does that mean? Well, it means we've got a number one do much of that. Our genomic surveillance who we can identify variants when they arise. It means you gotta double down on public health measures like masking and avoiding indoor gatherings. It also means investing more in something we haven't talked about very much recently, which is in treatment strategies, which has received a lot less attention that vaccines but are really important and above all this means and we've got invest a lot more in testing it in contact, tracing because He's also going to be essential, so the bottom line is we're in a race against these variants. The virus is going to change and it's up to us to adapt it to make sure that we're staying ahead. Are you coughing that we could meet President Biden's other goal to get most elementary schools open? In the 1st 100 days. Well, that's a very important goal. You know, I'll tell you as a parent who has two young Children, you know, one of whom is trying to do virtual learning because his school is not open and and we're all struggling with that eye. Know how critical it is for schools to get open for parents for the economy for all of us. It's kind of takes a lot of work, though, and send several friends. We better focus over one getting clear guidance schools on what they need to do to reopen number two. We've got to make sure schools have the resources to be able to reopen and take these measures on a lot of don't have the resources. I mean, keep in mind divergent each and every day we have teachers across the country who are reaching into their pocket. To find a few dollars to pay for supplies for their kids. They don't have money to pay for this safety provisions that are needed on their own, who got to get them those resources. If we get them, the resource is in the guidance. I do think that we can get on a path of reopening schools more safely, but it's also gonna take us getting the background number of cases down in our communities, and that's where we all come in. Achieving these goals. Turning covert around is a goal that we have to undertake together. Aziz one nation on and if we if we do that, but I'm confident we can turn this pandemic around. And finally, can we get to herd immunity before the next school year begins. I think it's an ambitious goal. I think I can think we can see improvement. I think we can see the reductions in cases and hospitalizations and deaths. I think we didn't see many more people immunized, but I think what's important here rather than focusing on a specific number in terms of percentage of the population for her immunity is to recognize that The more people we vaccinate, the better we will do. If you were outbreaks. We will see the sooner we can get back to our way of life. And that's what we've got to focus on. Right now. That means each and every one of us has to think. About how we can dispel misinformation. Make sure family and friends have the right information means as soon as possible is when the categories are open to us that we make an appointment and go get vaccinated ourselves. If we do these things on If we continue to work on taking the safety precautions, like masking and avoiding indoor gatherings of people outside your household, then I think we can get beyond a path and not only turning the pandemic around the most importantly, getting our schools open. Workplace is back up and running and regaining our way of life. Dr. Murthy. Thanks for your time this morning. Thanks so much, George. Good to be with you. We're gonna be right back after this from her ABC stations. Had food bags air covered in pretty pictures of healthy food. But the highly processed pellets inside are far from it.
