"Firefighters are dealing with the wildfires and looking at how they train and assessed and select individuals and in our conversations with dr klein. It's interesting when we when you look at a selection process. It's typically pretty is weekly demanding and we're looking at physical fitness but but if you take a selection events society and you just talk generally and say a frank where do you think makes a really good swat operator. Not a single person sits in that room says well physical fitness like the first thing that comes out would be determination bravery motivated initiative trustworthy. And all of those kind of intangibles that are that are hard to judge. How how do. I judge frank whether or not you're brave like standing up there and point a gun at you and tell you gonna shoot you you. There's there's no real way to to test that so were constantly trying to adjust that we're in a big right now a A concerted effort through the national tactical training unit or. Ntt you in trying to redevelop. What our selection process looks like citron maybe capture in encapsulate. Some more of those intangibles that maybe we we weren't capturing in the last system that we use inc really interesting and as you said not not easily done capturing intangibles you can certainly determine how good a marksman an agent is or how fast they can run or how many push ups they can do but that bravery and determination and tenacity that is a tough one and then how. They meld with the rest of the team. I think one of the one of the things that always impressed me As a field office leader was everybody has a role on a swat team. But yet they all work like like an orchestra together. Nobody doing anything outside of the knowledge or understanding of the other super pretty cool system and you know one of the things. That's that is super important. And that we try and impress within the program is is that trust right at trust in your teammates. The trust that that you have to trust that i'm gonna do. My job is going to trust that. You're gonna do your job and ultimately that's how that's how tactical teams in in no fail mission teams have to operate because the scenarios and situations that we deal with can't be solved by one person you'd be challenged to solve them with five people so everyone kind of has to know their role. Everyone has to do their job. They have to do a good job at it and they have to trust that those that are around you and that are on the team with you doing their job as well. Yeah i don't want to definitely don't want to take away from the baseline of yeah. You have to have good physical fitness and the reason that you have to have good. Physical fitness is that this is a marathon of career. This is a marathon of being on a swat team. I was on the swat team over a decade and without good physical fitness. The job is is monumentally harder. it's it's harder to wear. The gear is harder to be in the ninety five degree. Virginia heat in the summer with eighty two percent humidity and standing there in a in body armor with a helmet. You're not in not in good physical condition. You're going to struggle with And then of course you hit on it with the firearms piece you know. There are some very very talented gifted folks. That are really good shooters that don't have to work at it that hard but the vast majority of us. It's a perishable skills so we are out training we do have to train. There's a minimum number of training days for our swat teams. Not not going to say kind of where that sits but There's a there's a percentage that there's a standard requirement that we do look for in that we do track to make sure that operational proficiency is being met through training and through objective training speaking of talent. I'm hearing And tell me if. I've got this right. That increasingly female agents are part of that that talent pool at finds themselves Making it making the team on swat. I just Saw recently some fbi public relations material on an agent. They believe may be the first african american female Out of the swat team in puerto. Rico can you shed any light on on the diversity In terms of team membership. Yes sure You know. I think that's that's one of the things that i'm very proud of the fbi's program with diversity not just not just across sex but race as well as the diversity of background too. So you myself. I was a computer guy with no military. No law enforcement experience in. There's an opportunity for everyone to that. Makes it through to being an fbi agent to come out and and throw your name and that hat and and try out and go through selection and you know not to get too far off topic. Because i'll come back so your diversity question you know. I feel like it's hugely important in the position that i find myself in now. It's important that when someone comes out to selection of whether it be for. La swat team or chicago swat team or richmond swat team in richmond. Virginia that the agents that leaves selection whether they're selected or not. They learned something. I wanted to be a positive experience for them. That they that they came and they either learned something about themselves or they learn something that is going to make them a better agent leaving selection and again that's new irregardless of whether they make team or not. That said. where's your podcast. When i said fuck. I totally forgot because i had surgery this morning. So i'm cranking out this bad boy. And that's i want you to know there's no days off no days off no days wasted and no days off eight a needle the size of a yard stick up in my uterus. Today is able to sleep for two hours and then get back to work blessed to be here love. You mean it I am under a little bit of anesthesia. Told me to sleep it off today. They said you're gonna be groggy on my medical paperwork. It said do not make any big decisions today. I don't know how great this podcast is going to be. I don't know if i will say something. That won't get me locked up. I don't know if the irs will be here tomorrow. Because i'm kind of high right now. None on recreational drugs on. I was in a medically induced at about seven. Am this morning so anyways update so we did the doctor all this week and they were like your body's responding to the medicine but not how we had hoped i. It was seven exit. Three eggs are responding to the medicine. And you need the eggs to get to a certain size in your estrogen. Level has to be to a certain number in order for them to extract the egg and hopes that it will be a mature egg in order for you to then fertilize it to make an embryo and or put it on ice as just an egg. If you don't have a partner or semen again. I'm basically the scientists. Now i've learned so much so on my doctor's appointment on saturday there were like we don't know what happened but we only see one egg so i don't know if you should go through with this and i basically was like okay and the my doctors. I think you should still do it. It's a four percent chance at any of this will work. We don't know what's going to happen but you've already come this far. You're already on the hormones. Let's just see what we can get taken out. And i was really bummed about it. I was like this. I feel like i've been bamboozled. Like what the fuck again. I did this to be proactive. I wasn't trying to have a baby right this moment. And now you're telling me i'm not reacting to any of this like it was just kind of like a fuck you but then i went into today and they went in there to extract the one ag the lone ranger jeff. Were seriously considering not even doing this by said at this point. Just get the shit out of me. You know i'm supposed be in the turksancacoes for a photo shoot. Show me your move. But unfortunately this took president. So i might be able to fly down there later so all my girlfriends are down at wimereux fucking taking their tops off drinking my ties and i had to go under mild anesthesia have a yardstick shoved up. Hoo-ha little bitter about it. Swollen like a roast lamb on a greek easter so i came out anesthesia. That was wild wild and they said they found three eggs sets good. Hey the answer point four and now they're like maybe point seven now. This is not mean anything. It doesn't mean anything is anything tomorrow. I'll get a phone call from the lab and they'll say either the eggs made it like they were mature enough so i think what they do is jeff had to go jisr and a cup and i think they immediately take his jisr connect my egg and then they try and see if it'll mature so they make an embryo and they see amateurs i think or are they. Just wait for the big guys. I don't fucking know. I really didn't pay attention all i know is. I'm not supposed to make any major decisions today. But tomorrow we'll find out whether or not any of the eggs made it or the embryos wherever the fuck were making. We'll find out. So i wanna say something for the bottom of my heart. 'cause they're out we did it. Were moving on whatever it may be. I'm getting back to work. I'm going to be on a treadmill for the next six months. But it's been a mind fuck. It was cool though. I was sitting in the doctor's office on saturday morning at eight. Am to get the final word of whether or not we were going to do this yet. And i two girls sitting next to me and one of the girls like i. Love your podcast. I've just had my embryo transfer. Look i'm worried about it. We don't have the baby you know. We don't know this is a viable pregnancy. And the other lady next to me is like i'm on day six shots like podcast too and it's just been really cool that i didn't realize i felt almost embarrassed that i've been sharing this and i feel genuinely from the bottom of my heart. That's the wrong way to feel. Because then i realized how many other women were going through it again. You don't know what you don't know until you put it out there and then you're like. Oh this fucking sucks for everybody. So i just wanted say thank you to everybody. Who has you know been just been kind to be. And if you connected to. What's going on or you know whether it's do talk. We're talking about fertility or you know just life in general I really am very much appreciative. That this is a cool community of people who can check in talk about life in what sucks because sometimes sometimes it's great great. I'll tell you what though anesthesia is fucking fun. I get why. I get profile thing. I get the michael jackson thing now. They gave you a little yummy something before they will yield me and he was like okay. And we're insert the medication and you're gonna fall asleep. Three to like sawn logs. Then medicine didn't stand a chance. And the anesthesiologist was ripped. Who's probably older guy in his mid fifties ripped salt and pepper too short for my liking. But just a rip dude news chugging a protein coffee and just are all. Y'all he's like you're going to feel good. We'll sup click on out. I woke up a warm and fuzzy and essentially been high sense. I was going to take the day off relax and then i realized i still had shit do so. I'm here so if i say something fucking nuts. Buckle up because dr klein who was my anesthesiologist said you don't feel gucci today. Sogeti coaches and a cup and it was like baby during your Your headphones he's like. Oh faulk it and i told him i was like well. You need you. You gotta watch porn in this room. Now mind you. it's a sterile environment and the offices that i go to our. It's very beautiful medical office. They've done a nice job with it. But i mean he literally at six. Am having ages and a cup in a sterile medical office. I said i'm a pretty horn person but you know what i'm not horny about six. Am six to eight. Am now eight thirty on till the following eight thirty the next eight very six to eight nine horny at all at six forty five this morning jefferson to take his phone into a room. Sit on a leather chair. That a million other men have sat on and jerk it and it's so funny to me. I don't know why it is so funny to me. Dudes jacket off is defined as thing to me still. I'm thirty four years old. i'm married. I have sex on a regular basis. And it makes me giggle. And i was like jeff you bring your headphones are all shit. I'm off to liz. Liz on silence. So i right now. And then when he picked me up he's like how are you feeling like i'm good is a guy i was like. How are you feeling will let me do. His voice voice suck all more bab bad. We are today and to, uh, after the East one and one. Why do not, uh two other administrations Obama and Trump Prepared the country, the doctors and nurses. With the equivalent needed in case like this now. We'll break out and actually secrets. How can we be more prepared in the teacher? All right. We was probably the best overriding question of all, Dr Klein. What lessons should we have learned from this pandemic for the next one? Yes, so that the idea about protection is great and it It's definitely right. I mean, you know we're talking. I don't know, 15 years ago. I guess that was to the ball of the 2000. Nine was H one h one n one, and which turned out not to be such a big deal, And I think the problem is is you know you get lulled into a sense of comfort and we hit and we have got to mean nothing like this in 100 years, but we have these epidemics and then they go away and we move on and And and it's expensive, for example, to store protective equipment and those sorts of things because they outdated and and you know, you end up wasting them or throwing them away, you know, and I think, you know, I think that that our politicians tend to live for the moment, you know that. I think we see it everywhere and are spending and everything we do. They they? It's almost as if they're responding to the current news headlines, and I think I think we need some better longer term strategic planning. Uh, first of all, to make sure that that our health care system is or their health care workers. Are prepared to have enough equipment that sort of thing to to move ahead. We need. We need to keep constant stockpiles of of of equipment in those sorts of things, and I think You know, we really should not now that we have the vaccine technologies, which can be radically adapted to new vaccines. I think we need to put a lot of energy and effort into into continuing to develop those so that we're We're protected. I mean, we we, You know, we're very vulnerable to flu flu epidemic and in fact, people were predicting that, uh, they it may surprise you to know that the World Economic Forum said the United States was the best prepared country. In the world to to deal with an epidemic. Uh and they said that right at the beginning of, uh of this of this crisis, So, uh, it's not. It's not unique to the United States. No, and, uh, in that regard, should we not When we prepare and stockpile of a future should we not do so off of resources that are hours. That is to say not be dependent on any foreign country for those pandemic resources, especially one which is generally antagonistic to us. Yeah, I mean, that's such a great point, and we, you know, we get shifted. So much of our manufacturing and so many critical elements of the operation of of our society have gone overseas, and sometimes it's just to save a few bucks. I mean, it's not E. There really is no value to it. And I think I think we need to. We need to Be more vigilant. "I know in western Massachusetts Bay State system has done a phenomenal job and getting their staff Immunized as well as the ancillary staff that surrounds them. If you think about, you know, visiting nurses empties People who work in the health clinics. They've done a great job in getting that covered. So you know that's phase one. Uh, look, if you have health insurance, and the thing I love about Massachusetts is just about everybody does. If you are over the age of 75, you are now eligible in Phase two. We're starting to crack open the eligibility for individual 65 over as well as those with two or more medical conditions on then we will move on to essential workers such as K through 12 teachers transit grocery utility. Anyone in the food supply chain, sanitation and public works another public health workers. So think about who you are, as relates to the mass health phasing and you could just go 12. You know, mass dot go and look for covert information. It'll tell you right there, And then there are tons of outlets. Regarding where you can get vaccinated. We have the mass vaccination sites across Massachusetts in western Massachusetts. We have the East field more. We have U mass Amherst in central Massachusetts. We have Wister State University. We have on our health, New England website areas on the website that connect you to lots of information about Cove it you know, there's the Greater Springfield senior services. They're helping Hampton County Sheriff's Office. Uh there's a support services line there. The state has a lot of new resource is out there, including a toll free number as well as the Web site information, and I will tell you that we are making a concerted effort in the Springfield area. Make sure the underserved population and those who are vulnerable are getting their immunizations. I was just on the phone last night with some of my wonderful colleagues at our be healthy, a CEO product. And they are literally calling people and saying, Hey, can you come in? Do you need transportation? I think that's an amazing public service because, Jim, like you said, we want to get everybody immunized, and it shouldn't be just because I'm not living near the East Field ball or I don't have a car that works. But I get the night that vaccine so We're working really hard, and we're using a lot of different channels to get the vaccine deployed because if you think about it, you know we don't necessarily have a very certain supply chain. It's not like three covert. Remember when everybody Yeah, you know, think about pre covert times when you wanted to go to the grocery store and buy toilet paper. You were worried about what? You're gonna be toilet paper boy, you know, think about Jane, you know, and you know there's also logistical challenges. And, you know, we talked about that people space.
