I'm so proud to call Dr. Susie Riley a friend, and you have to follow her on Twitter X, whatever you call it, because she has one of the funniest pages out there. Susie, thanks so much for joining me on the show. No, thanks so much for having me, Nat. I'm excited to be here and thankful to call you my friend as well. Well, I'm so excited to hear your Bitcoin journey because you have such an interesting backstory. A career dentist, retired recently. You have a clinic in El Zante I want to talk to you about, but let's just start from the very beginning. Where are you originally from? Tell me a little bit about your career in dentistry and how you got into Bitcoin. I grew up in San Francisco and then went to Ohio State for dental school where I met my husband. We settled on Atlanta to practice dentistry together, bought a practice there in 1998. And I've practiced until this year. Sold our practice and have retired to Hawaii. Along the way in 2018 is when I first started purchasing Bitcoin. My teen son at the time asked me to buy it. I just did it to appease him. It wasn't something that I studied or believed in at all. But that has led me down like so many Bitcoiners, just many rabbit holes. And I think it really changed how my husband and I saw our careers. We loved dentistry. We were incredibly successful, had all of the trappings of success, but Bitcoin made us realize that those trappings that we enjoyed, our cars, our homes, all of vacations, felt like traps. They no longer felt like a reward anymore. And so we started in 2021 looking at selling everything and trading our time for freedom instead of the up. Wow. OK. I want to dig into a little bit more of that because one of the things that amazed me is when you told me at one point that you sold your house to buy Bitcoin. So before we get there, let's just talk a little bit more about money. I mean, growing up, did you choose dentistry because it was going to potentially bring you financial stability, something that looked like it was going to be lucrative? Tell me a little bit about kind of your back story with money. So I didn't go into college thinking that I would be a dentist. In fact, it seemed like a disgusting career to me. I wanted to go into academia. I loved research. I loved publishing. But one of the grad students in our lab, his father was a dentist. He had a standing Friday date with him since dentists don't work on Friday generally. And he would tease me and say, this is a horrible idea for you to go into academia. I think. And I'd say, what do you think I should do, Dr. Kevin? You should be a dentist, which again, I just I couldn't imagine doing that. But he had me interned in his office and he was this beloved character. He had a great lifestyle. He lived a beautiful, beautiful family, family man, and it sold me. So I went all in knowing that I've always wanted a lot of kids. And so I then went to Ohio State for dental school, met my husband. We have four beautiful children and we practiced for 26 years together. Well, I mean, you have what so many people strive for, what they dream of, but you mentioned that it felt like trappings, like you were trapped by some of those things. So let's let's kind of dig into that a little bit more. I mean, having all of these things, especially being able to maybe afford the nice house, the nice car vacation, why did it feel like you weren't fully in the in the value of freedom and living out in a free sovereign way? Well, I think that when first of all, as a woman and a mom, a working mom, you always feel like you're never doing enough. I think when I was giving fully to my kids, I felt like I was neglecting my, you know, especially when you're a business owner, I'm like, oh, I'm neglecting running the business. When I would pour more time into the business, I definitely felt a lot of mom guilt about I wasn't giving to my kids the way I wanted to. So I think you're always balancing that, which is tough as a woman. And then so many times it's no matter how much we made over the years, we built this little practice to get this huge practice, very successful. But no matter how much we made, we somehow found a way to spend it. And, you know, we went to the bigger house we get. So it did begin to feel like it was this hamster wheel that we were constantly, you know, just we were working so hard that we wanted to reward ourselves. And so it'd be like we'd go on a bigger vacation, we'd get the fancier car, oh, we need another home. And you when look at it as a big winner, it starts to feel like this is a trap. This is what they want from us is to work harder and to just keep the system going. Did you notice just prices going up, especially in sort of those more scarce assets like real estate? I mean, I'm thinking about just the conversation that a lot of people are having this week about Paul Krugman saying, oh, we should move the inflation target to 3%. Yes. I feel like so many people, we don't study the financial system at a young age to be able to question something like the inflation rate. Did you kind of notice, oh, things are getting more expensive, but I can keep up? I think for me, and I think this is a lot of people, and it's sort of a shame to say it, again, as a business person that I thought I was educated, I thought I understood the financial system, but I really thought inflation is natural. Of course, things get more expensive over time. Of course, a soft drink costs 25 cents when our parents were young and it's $1 .50. I thought that it's just the way things are. I didn't question it. I didn't question fractional reserve banking. I thought the Fed was a government entity. I knew the dollar wasn't backed by gold, but I didn't realize it was backed by no gold. There's so many things that I didn't understand and just thought, why should I study that? I'm successful. I think that's by design. I think we're kept in the dark. I think it's meant to be that we're not supposed to understand. Even talking to so many of my normie friends now or my dentist friends now, if they're doing okay, they don't care to learn. It's like, it'll all be fine. That meme about it's fine, I hear it all the time. Why are you worrying about this? It always ends up fine. In order to preserve your wealth, were you investing essentially in real estate before and maybe a stock portfolio or how were you seeing that ability to plan for your kids to hopefully have some sort of a safety net and be able to take care of their needs into the future? Yeah. I mean, absolutely just pretty traditional stock portfolio. We had a wealth manager. We had commercial real estate, tried to always have some passive investment. We owned our building for our practice, all these things and did well. But when Tesla made the announcement in 2021 about that they had acquired Bitcoin, when that came out, my stupid little Bitcoin on my phone, rainy day that I would sock away a little bit, I looked at it and I was like, holy cow, my nothing investment that I really didn't pay attention to was now a significant amount of money and had outperformed everything else that I had invested in. And that's when, of course, I started to see Bitcoin differently. To me, it became, oh, this is something that people can get rich on. I think that's the first thought that comes to your head. So I went full, I'm going to invest in altcoins. I'm going to find the next Bitcoin again. I believed in all of those fallacies and I went full altcoin investing. I took trading classes, all those things. Oh, wow. Yeah. And did well, but it was a maxi on Twitter, a toxic maxi on Twitter. I just started to get on to Twitter in 2020. I'd been on for a long time, just not active. And it was a toxic maxi who told me I'm an idiot and that I knew nothing about Bitcoin. And here I was, I'm like, well, I'm going to be retiring from my Bitcoin holdings. And he's like, I'm not even talking to you about it until you read one book. You've obviously read nothing. And that was for me, of course, I had many people tell me, you need to study Bitcoin. You need to read more. You need to, and I was like, I'm watching YouTube videos. I need, I know all I need to know, but getting me where it hurt most, my ego, that is what caused me to really read the Bitcoin standard and it opened my eyes to everything. Same here. Thank you, Safedine. Yeah, Safedine changed my life too. Wait, so, okay. It was your son who first told you about Bitcoin. How did he know about it? And did you, I mean, you clearly had a journey, right? It's like, no, this isn't a thing. I'm skeptical. Yes, maybe it's a thing. I'm going to invest a little, but also venture out into all these other cryptocurrencies. Oh, no, this is the only, the real one that I should be relying on that has the properties of money. Can you talk about sort of that journey and how, how your son discovered it? Yeah, so my son, like most teenagers, you know, his age was 16, 17 at the time were gaming. And so a lot of these young guys would talk about Bitcoin. And so, I mean, he came to me and he was like, you need to put, you need to buy, you know, 10 ,000 And was I absolutely not. And, but he didn't let up. I mean, it must've been six, seven months. And eventually he put an app on my phone. It makes me laugh. It was called Coin Mama. And he was like, my mama, I don't even, I keep meaning to look if it's still around, but it's, that's where I got my first Bitcoin. And so, and I only did it because he installed it on my phone and it was too, he was relentless. So I, it was to shut him up. What year was this and how old was he? 2018, 17. And so, wow. Yeah. And, and so I think my first buy was $20 of Bitcoin. And then, and again, it wasn't, I genuinely believe this was something that criminals use, that it was dark web stuff that I didn't want anything to do with it. So I didn't look into it. I was, it was an easy buy on my phone. And so, but then I would kind of, I never really paid attention to news stories or anything like that. I would just, but if I didn't go to Starbucks that weren't that week or, Oh, I didn't, you know, get my hair cut or I'm just going to buy some Bitcoin this week. So I was buying like little $20 here, $10 there for, you know, three years. Wow. Okay. So, I mean, for you to go from kind of, you know, dipping your toe in, buying it here and there in, in place of what you might spend on a coffee to actually selling your home and putting it into Bitcoin, how did, how did you get to that level of conviction that this is something that's here to stay and it is the best investment I could possibly make? It really went, to me, the difference between crypto investors and Bitcoiners is Bitcoiners are always so well read and they study so much. And my life motto is to always be in this drunk environment around people smarter than me. And when I kept hearing from these people were smarter than me, this is what I believe in. You know, I mean, there's people, you pest a fish, James Lavish, so many of these people, Jeff Booth, you know, that I'm like, I look up to them so much and they put their money where their mouth is. And then I would study a little more and I'd read a book that they'd recommend and I'd, you know, learn a little more, something, some light bulb would go on and you know, things like, my real estate holdings, they've done well, but they didn't do as well as my Bitcoin. It was, and then when I say, oh, yeah, this inflation isn't natural. These things are, yes, it looks like it's, my homes are worth so much more, but it's really the money is worth that much less. There's such a shift when you study and you're not all about the money that you realize things are so broken and it makes you want to do something to help change the system. Well, you know, I'm curious because I totally agree with the people that have sort of made it in the fiat sense and they're doing okay financially. They probably don't have a reason to question the system that's working for them. But why do you think that we're having such a tough time breaking through to the normies and really getting a significant amount of the working class that is really struggling with the disadvantages of the current system and with inflation? Why aren't they taking a look at this as an alternative just in coming to it in droves? Well, I think when Bitcoin is doing well, I know my experiences at my phone, text messages, email is blowing up like in 21. I had everybody just so excited about Bitcoin and crypto at the time as well. Like, you know, everyone was ready to put their jobs and become full time traders. It seems like you could do no wrong. But I know since then, like there are some members of my family who are late 21, they were ready to invest a significant amount into Bitcoin. And then it's these terrible, you know, FBS and no plan and all these things. They hear these things and they just don't trust it. It sounds like some it sounds like a scam to them. And I think, again, that's intentional to have all of these things seem like they're Bitcoin. And it scares people off, especially like my parents generation. It's terrifying. Well, what will change that? I think one of the best things Bitcoiners do is to differentiate Bitcoin, not crypto. It's something that I say all the time is that, you know, if you understand what Bitcoin is and then if I have family members who start asking me about Dogecoin or something, you know, Ethereum. And I just start talking about this is how it's different. I will I'll see a little bit of the light bulb go on. But I think until we see, you know, legacy finance, really, I think I think these ETFs coming on the line will be terrific for older investors and give it more legitimacy. Espn max now okay Friends reunion streams on hbo. Max it's like behind the scenes type of stuff a big interview with the cast. Now and i know a lot of people have been waiting for friends reunion. I know a lot of people. I think everybody but me and my friends circle. He has lots. I watch it at night. You know late syndicated announce that everyone late at night and know most of the actors. Yeah so we've just recently partnered with farrell's conflate their their organization donated monies to morris brown for us to be a very small Twenty a sports gaining center here on the campus Barrels conclave coincidentally the owner of the company is father graduated from morris brown college as a winner for them their families to make donations Will work with barrels conclave and others regarding Promoting our degree program because every a lot of people gain but a lot of people don't know about each sports from a business perspective and or from education perspective and so we're working with barrels conclave and others to really promote the that more frown now has this degree program action and they can come and learn about business and each force simultaneously. I tell people a lot about the sports business or say the video game world that brought along each worth is that if you think about eastwards just think about it in the same definition as traditional sports. Everything you see with. Bob baseball basketball professional leagues that is gracefully where eastbound going or where some of the games that we know of Duty overwatch nba two k. Summons will be sent to the president and his team and the trial will begin on the week of February. 8th on February 9th is when the trial arguments will be getting. There's still unclear how how long this trial will take. I think there's a general sense that it will probably be shorter than the 2020 trial. That trial lasted 21 days. But there were two article of impeachment at that point in time, and there's a sense that this time around the case is a little bit more clear Cut. There's just a single article of impeachment, so there's a sense that it probably won't take us long Okay? And this time is said to be giving the president time for his defense preparations and also time for the Biden Cabinet to get ensconced. That's right. There's a concern that the the Senate trial getting underway. It might pose an obstacle to Joe Biden confirming his his nominees. They all have to go through the Senate confirmation process. He we are expecting Janet Yellen and we confirmed to the Treasury Department today, but she would become just the third nominee here, so he is kind of lagging behind in terms of confirming members of his Cabinet compared to some of his Predecessors, and there's a concern that the Senate trial will will slow him down. So there is, you know, they are hoping Tol firm more people in the coming days. And there was as you mentioned also an effort on behalf of Republicans trying to Delay that the try a little bit to give the president more time to lawyer up on get his defense team together. So that is part of the reason why they set a February 9th is the start date here, and we should finally mentioned I think something else to watch is you know some Republican senators questioning now It's been interesting to watch how how they've evolved. Their their views. When it comes to this trial, some Republican senators questioning whether the trial is constitutional. Given that the president is out of office and whether the constitutional to convict a president who's out of office that's never happened before so Republicans who had initially come out to voice support for impeachment are now kind of back pedaling. What is the risk of allergic reaction to COVID-19 vaccines?
"See those they respect getting the shots, the thought is they'll be willing to get one too. And when we reach about 70% immunity meeting 70% of us have either had Cove it or have had the colored vaccine. We can finally put away the masks and hug once again. One of those respected people who got a shop this week is Dr Kevin Slavin, a pediatric infectious disease specialist who's also director of Quality for Hackensack, Meridian Children's Health in New Jersey. ABC News producer Joy Piazza. Rupert spoke to him right after he received his vaccination. What was that process like? It actually was remarkably smooth. We have because of the limited early distribution. We've identified highest risk. Health care workers. Should be in in what we're calling Phase one and they set up this incredible process where They can administer enough vaccines in a very brief amount of time in a single location. With everybody keeping their distance. Everybody masking. And even with the period of observation that's needed afterwards to make sure that they're no immediate side effects. The The whole process from walking in the door. Registering, making sure that I didn't have any of the screening conditions that would. That would be a reason not to get the vaccine at that point. Getting the vaccine and being observed for 15 minutes. That whole process took about half an hour. Every step work exactly the way it was supposed to. I didn't wanna sort of ask how you feel right now. Do you have any sort of underlying Grogginess or fatigue or pain at the injection site. Anything like that. So yesterday my arm was a little sore. So you know I could I could I could use it. It wasn't a big deal, but it was A little bit different from what I get with most most vaccinations, but that was it. There were these couple of instances of allergic reactions in the UK, and then there were two in Alaska. Is it something that folks should worry about? If they have allergic reactions to medicine or or food or anything like that? Should they talked their doctor the way that It looks like it has come up is for people who have had serious allergic reactions before and it's certainly not everybody who's had a serious allergic reaction before. But people who've had serious allergic reactions before mostly focusing on an awful axis, which is, you know the most severe form where there could be severe swelling and your difficulty breathing. And swelling of the throat swelling of the tongue swelling of the lips, all of which presents somebody from being able to really breathe effectively. I think for people who had to severe allergic reactions that that would be something to very seriously discuss with their physician, Bilton observation time immediately afterwards where your observed in a setting We're a health care provider can administer immediate treatment. If you have that that is actually really key for anybody who wants to get the vaccine but has a zit concern that if they speak with their physician, and it felt that it's safe, making sure that it is given in a place that can provide immediate rescue treatment for a severe allergic reaction, and then get somebody quickly to a place where they can provide ongoing treatment goes, that's gonna be the real key component for that. Nearly 80% of Washington State's ICU Beds Are Full
"Eighty percent of washington state's. Icu beds are full. About a quarter of those patients have or are suspected to have covid nineteen and it's k. Uaw's austin jenkins reports. The situation may get worse before it gets better in the past couple of months. The number of covid patients in providence southwest washington's two hospitals has nearly doubled and the full effects of the thanksgiving holiday have yet to be seen. Unfortunately i think within the next week it's going to be a significant in cova nineteen. This is dr kevin caserta. He's the chief medical officer for providence hospitals in olympia and centralia. He says to prepare for the worst nurses in their quality control and documentation departments are receiving training this week in case they're needed to help with direct patient. Care obviously were hoping not to have to utilize resources such as that but we are planning ahead so that way we can definitely meet the communities needs. He says the best gift. The public can give healthcare workers this holiday season to wear a mask and avoid gatherings.

Research Led by Boston's Children Hospital Offers New Insights Into Mysterious, Rare COVID-Related Inflammatory Illness In Children

When it comes to ice melt, 'what happens in Greenland doesn't stay in Greenland'
"So this recent study in the journal Nature comes out and it says Greenland the ice sheet there now melting seven times faster than in the nineteen nineties. So why should we care about that. Well faster melt. Means faster sea level rise and that puts an extra four hundred million people at flood. Risk by twenty one hundred. The Greenland study was a hot topic for scientists at the American Geophysical Union Conference in San Francisco to scientists at. The conference took a moment. I want to send climate. CAST their thoughts on the study from of all places. Their hotel lobby. Here's University of Saint Thomas Professor. John Abraham Hey Paul thanks. Thanks for having me on today. Appreciate the chance to talk to your audience. So I'm sitting here with Dr Kevin Trenberth and we were just talking about the new Greenland ice sheet article. Hi Paul Kevin Trenberth so. There was an exceptional melt event in August of this year when Dan rivers of melted water. Where flowing across parts of Greenland and the extent of the melt across greenland was unprecedented at contributes tributes significantly to sea level rise? And you know the sea level is going up by over three millimeters per year. It's gone up over three about three and a half inches Since one thousand nine hundred ninety two which is when we had altimeters and space to actually measure this and so we can measure the sea level rise to millimeter accuracy. The ocean is warming That's expanding and so. That's another key part of this overall problem. So Kevin trenberth was talking about millimeter seal rises and people might think those are small. But if you have the sea level rise is by just one centimetre over six million people will be affected. There's a lot of people that live near close to the coast. This is affecting real people. Real lives is in the US and in other countries and we expect four hundred million people to be affected by this problem by twenty one hundred. This is a real problem. it's human caused and we've really got to do something about it. That's John Abraham from the University of Saint Thomas with world renowned climate scientists. Kevin trenberth talking to us from. I'm their hotel lobby of the American Geophysical Union Conference in San Francisco last month. They were sharing a recent study. That says the Greenland. Ice Sheet is melting much faster than we thought. Thanks for the perspective guys. We heard them talking about the consequences of millimeters and centimeters of sea level rise. But here's the bigger picture. Sure just how fast future sea levels will. Rise is a huge climate. Change Wildcard current forecasts project about three feet of sea level. Rise by twenty one hundred. That's based on a mid level greenhouse gas emissions scenario but many scientists believe three feet is too low and higher level projections this project. Six to eight feet of sea level rise by twenty one hundred. This new greenland melt study and trends. were seeing an. Antarctica suggests that sea level level rise is trending toward those higher and projections. Flooding is costly and dangerous as we saw last year in places like Puerto Rico and North Carolina and and the big insurance companies like Munich. Reinsurance say sea level rise brings dramatic economic impacts to the coast and to real estate and Insurance Trans- everywhere. You're including Minnesota so climate change in Greenland isn't like Vegas what happens in Greenland doesn't stay in. Greenland and sea level rise will be among the big climate story lines. We'll continue to watch here in twenty twenty.
