"There so little flu. This year i. It's just not traveling internationally. Every year when winter starts in the southern hemisphere influenza levels. They're sore then. As the seasons change. The virus travels up to the northern hemisphere for our winter but fewer people travelling means. Fewer people to carry between regions. Flu doesn't just float in the air and move to the airstreams one country to another. It's people that move. The flu people announced what we see. What the coronavirus says well second our own actions are also helping. What's slowing the spread of the virus. The flu virus and asking and staying home more social distancing that we're doing for the coronavirus will all help with influenzas. Well and the other big thing is that we have a vaccine for influenza and received record numbers of people choosing to take it in fact eleven million more americans have turned up for a flu. Shot this year and it's not only flew on a decline other respiratory viruses have dropped too. We see bronchiolitis. Rsv is down. We see the common colt rhinovirus this down for hospitals overwhelmed with covert low. Flu numbers are making a huge difference. We certainly are at capacity like a lot of emergency departments around the country but the bottom line is because there's no flew the patients that need the ventilators. They need the icu. Beds were really able to take care of those patients a silver lining certainly but with months of flu season to go we could still see a surge. Do not let your guard down yet now. Definitely not never anything could change one last thing. It's not too late to get your flu. Shot dr john torres. Nbc news still ahead mystery.

Kate tom costello thanks. And let's get right to dr john torres. dr john. What do you make of these new questions surrounding astrazeneca and their vaccine. This shows us that the back vetting process is actually working. So what you're seeing here. Are the vaccine manufacturers being held accountable by outside experts. Making sure all the information about the trials is released and asking the hard questions about who it's been tested on what. The specific outcomes were the more scrutiny the manufacturers and their vaccine undergo now the more confidence and trust we can have the any approved vaccine will be both safe and effective. Kate dr john thank you. This is a thanksgiving like none other for healthcare workers so many sacrificing their own holiday to help others and hospitals reached their breaking point. Trump. Lester injury thank you next for US tonight. The new corona virus warning about children. All right welcome back joining me. Now is our medical correspondent. Dr John Torres John. We thought that kids were fairly protected from this virus. But I know there's talk about a new study out there suggesting otherwise. What can you tell us? What should parents know Lester? We now know that kids are more vulnerable than we thought they can get seriously sick and they can also transmit the virus. A new study in China looked at two thousand children who are infected with the virus and found half had mild symptoms about forty percent had moderate symptoms and about six percent developed severe illness. Those kids under five were most at risk still if children get the virus. They are less likely than adults to become critically ill but now we know kids are not invincible. This means adults and children must do everything they can to stay healthy including handwashing and social distancing. These are things we all need to do. We continue to learn about this virus. Dr John Thank you. I'm a reminder this special anchor tomorrow and the corona virus and the networks have NBC. That's our broadcast tonight. Thank you for watching. Take care of yourself and each other good. Hey It's Chris. As this week on my podcast wise is happening. I'll be talking with Michael Lewis. Who wrote an amazing book about what it looks like inside the bowels of the federal government in the trump administration particularly those people trying to deal with big systemic risks? It's extremely topical as battle the Corona Virus so I interview people close to trump and nobody said anything but he doesn't know anything and he doesn't have much interest in learning about it and when that's at the top all of a sudden you've got this very mission driven enterprise with someone who's got interest in the mission what Russia's in who's going to show up to work for that administration and what they have in common is they have some narrow financial interest in whatever the enterprise is. That's this week on. Why is this happening search for wise happening wherever you're listening right now and subscribe?.
