"They make it way. Yeah and then. We switched our cell phone providers to something much much cheaper and rice and beans rice and beans. We we cut cable. We you know we went to we did that. We also did. Then you got to play with your kids into We did lots of things like that. We also You know we went from buying like You know quote like healthier food like you know. Some of the organic stuff to where he went to To buying all generics all the and places like that really you know. We saw just switching grocery stores. We knocked her grocery bill down by like six hundred bucks a month which is crazy. So things We just made a lot of a lot of little changes and a lot of telling children. No but hey we kinda wanted. Just think well. It's not in the budget and we can't do this month or let's look at it next month and i think the biggest thing for us to do it all was really improve communication skills for even though you know we were sharing bank accounts. Everything else Our money was running two different directions. We had goals for ourselves and not necessarily Yeah we weren't talking together about as much and you know at this point we've been married six years. We began this journey so we should have already been on the same page but it was in different directions. This really helped us pull together. And we didn't every dollar together every month and sat down and think the i probably eight or nine months. She hated that time of the month. And then we kinda got better as we used to it and make adjustments and You know learning how to work on a budget and things and we dealt with setbacks. I mean we had a. We had about twenty dollars in medical bills. We had a cash flow through the beginning of this so she had had some major surgeries. We had to do some that and we also had a by new. Hvac system we had to do. Oh fact always likes to show up. We're trying to make headway financially. What would you say to couples out there. That aren't on the same page there here. This and they're shaking their heads and go. We're not on the same page financially. You guys got on saint page. Would you say to encourage them. I mean i think just finding you're finding your y getting your goal and then really just finding a way to communicate. Adjust how. I spoke to her money. Because if. I wasn't careful. The way i spoke about money came off to her like i was either be condescending or was or i was not value told her because we had different different things important. And i think. I mean from your end. Basically i been very privileged my whole life so being told no was not really exciting but you know not really learning to live like within your means and below your means to make sacrifices really was rewarding You know it's a good feeling to be to look back and see what if accomplished. Yeah that's awesome. So who are your cheerleaders. Who are the people that really cheer you on and stayed with you through the journey. We definitely family You know her parents especially in mind too as well but her your parents who are the ones who had it through after you back in high school. They were followers of the program. We're kind of encouraging us on and You know in our and my my dad step mom is well. We had some good folks in From family and friends that our corner from friends from our church where really encouraging as well. That's awesome in the kiddos. I see that they're here with you. We're going to bring them up just a moment. But did they get it like or they or they kinda in tuned. And how did they contribute. Well they after saying no to so many things for so long figured we had to kind of tell them why at some point. We explained the concept of debt. And they're like. Why would you do that. That seems silly like well. Yes out of the mouth of babes come wisdom right so but They they started to understand what you're doing and they were excited for us and we're talking about it. And then sometimes they would tell each other or and our oldest sues with his grandmother today but you know he reminded no. We're not doing that because you know we're because mommy daddy in debt working on stuff and so police each other a little bit so good well see. They've joined just tell us who they are and their their names and ages please. This is fm. He has seven. This is lydia. He has six. we got it. F- and lydia. That is so awesome and now have they been practicing their scream. Are they ready to go. Yes sir. I think it's time you john right. Let's we're going to get your copy legacy journey. Because that's the next step where y'all headed and we're gonna give you a copy of money makeover so you can give it away to somebody who you think would benefit from. It changed her life as well. Yeah so please pass that along all right here. We go john. And catherine f-from and lydia. They paid off eighty seven thousand dollars. Eighty seven five hundred eleven dollars actually in twenty eight months making one hundred five thousand two hundred and forty thousand dollars. Let's hear your debt. Free screen guys. Three to one. That i love it. So good. Way to go kiddos. They nailed it as a happy family. John didn't quite a sacrifice. Yes but it's two years and then every single thing is different. You're right. Triple eight eight to five five to five so Doc let's set the table. Shall we sat down. We can do a little dr john baloney show. We'll talk about mental health emotional health marriage issues. We'll talk about. Ooh how about this one toxic workplace garbage all john. What is that team up on that. What's a toxic workplace exist anywhere don't exist at all. I don't know that all crappy leaders men are making you consider changing your entire career. Lane is at necessary the emotional junk at work. John and i love the team up on that because that's his area in the area of mental emotional health. I'm over here in the area of purpose and doing what you were created to do. Of course we'll take your money questions relationship questions Here's one been getting a lot of traffic james producers telling me people asking questions. Hey ken my company is going to mandate the vaccine for various reasons. I don't want to do it. That means i might lose my job. I'm expecting lose my job. What do i do. I'm getting that call regularly on the ken coleman show. I told you on the doctor. John so john and i can help you that because that is not just a. That's not a work career question that there's there's all kinds of stuff there. There's the emotional. The mental duress the financial decisions. You gotta make. This is a tough choice. That's being a brought your way so we'll take those questions. Here's what we're not going to. We're going to get into a political argument over it. We're going to help you navigate the future the steps ahead so we're open it up. It's about you we're here for you. Triple eight eight to five five two two five. Let's start it off with tyler. Who joins us now in salt lake. City utah tyler. How can we help. Hey john and ken thanks so much for question. What's up So i'm twenty two years old and i'm working fulltime right now and then doom school online. And i'm at the point in school where i should really be Deciding and locking in on a career or a focus on what. I'm studying going into But at this point time. I'm really not sure I can't really navigate which path. I like to go. Go down to what career i like to go into. My question is how. Should i go about deciding that. And then how much should i really A lot of money to influence that decision up. How much i'll be making it that career yet so moneymatters. Let me. Just start with that. But i would never let the amount of money that i could make be the ultimate decision maker. Is it a part of the decision. Yes but not the ultimate decision maker. And i'll start with this title. I can't tell you how many phone calls i've taken on the ken coleman show here on the ramsey show where somebody is taken a promotion because it was a lot of money and it was a big bump and then they got over there and they realize man i'm miserable and that happens all the time the data that's out there on wall street millionaires. That are really good at their job and making a killing and they're miserable and as a result they're moving into depression They're moving into addiction. All kinds of. I'm gonna tell you something you gotta love the work or at some point If you don't love your day job you better have a side job or hobby. That's very very meaningful to you. You gotta have some purpose in what you're contributing so I would consider what your options are from a pay standpoint but never let it be the deciding factor. So let's get practical. You're in school. You're in a major. I'm guessing you have a couple of ideas as it relates to paths. That you're considering gimme that gimme the the ones that are the the most exciting to you right now. You spend the most time thinking about Well something In the business realm Whether that's company or or My girlfriend's father accountant. Something around that area doesn't sound super exciting. But something that i potentially might be going into but like said i'm still kind of trying to decipher. I get it but tyler. I got ask you. Why did you go into school. What was something that you thought. You know what this could be exciting work. Is there ever been a point where you said you know. What does i looked at my future. And i wonder a little bit. What did you wonder about. What have you done well. It was originally going into school for psychology be. I wanna be counselor a therapist. Why because i do love the of to help people and i'm pretty good at listening and And try and give them good advice or help them understand their situation better. Have you moved on from that I think uh. I only did because the school down the road kind of the extra school kind of threw me off your but hold on a second. Let's pause it. What was the driving reason behind your interest in psychology and helping people specifically the problems that people have that draw you in that led you that direction anything from your personal journey or observation experience. Yeah i would say probably experience. Are you comfortable sharing that Yeah so i. I actually My mom had a counselor growing up just with family matters with siblings and family and out of different treatment centers and everything And i think just having the charlie growing up having someone to talk to and Not only to listen to you but you know help you navigate Through you know whatever craziness you're going through. Yeah you had somebody in that role. That still means a lot to you. Yeah definitely.

"I'm dave ramsey your host dr john baloney ramsey personality is my co host today. He's the host of the ferry popular. Dr john and delanie podcast Popularity is going up into the right. It's hockey sticking. The numbers are amazing. So if you want to hear a really entertaining show about life and people's Questions about relationships and so forth. he's there and he's here today to help you as well. The phone number is triple eight. Eight to five five two two five speaking of calls for dr john calebs with us in austin texas high kayla power. You you better than i deserve. How you just the same sir. How can we help. I figured out. Well i'm calling on behalf of my meeting. Her and Had a falling out about probably about three years ago. And i'm sorry say again. How long ago. Probably about three years ago years ago. Okay yeah and it's still pretty Pretty hectic Then so my. What does that mean. What does acting it's not. It's not a good relationship We we had our son just turned nine months They met once and are kind of the rules we have. Is you know out at our house and my son. Our son allowed there. And it's It's it's wayne heavy on my wife So that's that's a hard boundary. Why did you feel the need to draw the boundary. it's it's it's just a cancer person. I guess to say more specific. You're talking pretty vague specific. Somehow that said you can't do that. There's a danger to your child. Yeah Well just environment boyfriend is not Not the best man in the world She's just she's very negative. She's always marriage with my often. Tell people were not going to allow when my life got practice. Said i wasn't gonna stick around and we had a miscarriage and fluid off and my wife has recently answered to If they could go to counseling and tried to fix it and she was just like All about it. And it's just to me a my mic is. If it's just the thought of being around someone stressing now. I just don't even if you look that that's easier said than when it's your mom and and your your your wife has a picture in your head of this new baby and her mom's a part of that and she had to draw boundaries for whatever reason i still get it but she had to draw some boundaries that doesn't include her. Try understand just as a guile at john talking but but your your mother-in-law's series of offenses are that she's a jerk. Yeah you're done something. She done something other than just been a jerk to your wife. Physical harm his shirt. She just like nasty. And kinda mean gnarly snarling. And i mean there's a lot of Ethical things that have gone on with like Finances and stuff like that. I don't want air out From your wife will father okay. She's just a person of no character. Right yeah okay. Like he only. We'll talk to my wife. Wanted her boyfriend's outta town and then winter flagrant comes back. Doesn't respond to anything. So what's the challenge. Is your wife struggling with just putting a period at the end of that relationship moving on the inside. Yeah and that's where i'm calling in like under trying to the man of me is like well you know so long and for her harder and i'm just trying to figure out her mom mom. Yeah you got honor. That don't don't don't get into trap talking about about her mom getting a supporting her in love and her at some point she's going to have to make the decision she's gonna have to put a period at the end of that sentence. Mom's never gonna do it with her because if she would you wouldn't be in this situation the first place so your wife's going to have to decide to grieve this loss and then start creating a new picture. That's going to include her baby. You and whoever else but not mom in your wife can do that on her own terms in our own time. And that's frustrating annoying. if your husband who loves. His wife doesn't wanna see a hurt but any time there's a separation from a mom like this just going to be hurt. It's going to be hard especially let me throw out something The secret to happiness is low expectations and so if if her mother had a. I'll just make up something. I don't know something where let's say. She had alzheimer's okay. And people get alzheimer's they generally either become much nicer than they used to be or much meaner than they used to be My mother-in-law got alzheimer's and bless her soul. She got nicer and And kept feeding the dog until the dog got fat fat. i mean it was reduced. It was almost humorous and so because she forgets. You've had that. Oh yeah so if you had someone like that you would not. We were never looked at. Sharon's mom when she was going through that and said we. We lowered our expectations of her because she was deficit. Does that make sense. Yeah no that makes one. And i think your wife still has hi mom expectations of a woman who can't deliver. Yeah and so if she order expectations and just said pretend like mom has alzheimer's and she's a little nutty. 'cause she's a little nutty dude. The woman you just described is like oscar. The grouch and she's really she's really got her crap together mentally. This woman doesn't but i can see the challenge between so those timers and saying this person got saying if you if you if you're talking about his wife if she said instead of hoping mom is going to be all super you'd never going to be. I know instead said trader as if she's deficit because she is yata and you just go out. That's just my grandmother. This is just crazy mother and then you don't then you don't get all tore up about it. 'cause sheet reason the girls get torn about it. She keeps telling him. I was gonna come through. She's got she's got this picking my wrong. Yeah but i think. I think that i think that having lower expectations this is going to make her feel good. She's still going to have to be she's still got the grieve that thing. That never gonna come. I don't disagree with that. But i'm saying if every one of these conversations is like. Oh mom did it again. What did you expect. Yes yeah yeah if rattlesnakes bite you right. That's it stinks. Snake bites so don't beat when they start. You know when that will tell starts wiggling and making that little noise you just get back. You know kayla mischievous are you in a place have you back yourself into a corner with an either or that was a little bit over the top or do you feel.

"Is the ramsey call of the day part of the ramsey network joining me. Today is ramsey. Dr john baloney folk is with us in midland. Texas i hope how are you. Hi how are you guys doing today. Better than we deserve. what's up. Well first off. I just want to say what a pleasure it was to see both of you at summit this year in dallas. That was very enjoyable. Thank thank you thank you for coming. It was a great event. We had a lot of fun. It was great My question today actually Just a background My husband and i together started our own business. Thirteen years ago and It's just over the last four or five years. it's gone downhill. He and i have a lot of issues with communicating Almost to the extent of not communicating at all but it is affecting our business A great deal. Because he and i are not on the same page as far as strategy how to how to go about the operation of the business and get going so i guess my question is What kind of advice. You might would have Relationship as well as just keeping our business afloat and moving it forward when we're not on the same page at all. How's your marriage Suffering because of it is it a chicken or the egg is they self-reinforcing one another. I guess is tough at home. They become tough in the office and they become tougher at home and faster and faster. Have you guys stepped away from everything. Gone over to dallas for a weekend is to say. Hey what in. The world's going on or is this thing just started spinning so fast and all of a sudden you look up and it's a year later. You're not talking anymore Just kind of spun and then in yeah like you said two or three years later now. Things are just so totally out of control and we were talking to. There's a problem to. oh yes. Okay yes yeah. This is one of those moments that can it can be a really important. It's going to be an important moment either way but it can be Something not to be feared it can be a beautiful moment when was redefining rebuilding excavation start over rebuilding moments. But it's got to have to happen. Somebody's gotta turn the lights off. I mean turn the lights on. Turn the music off. Take inventory of the party you've been having and saying. Hey where are we. What's going on and I love it when couples can look each other in the eye and say hey we need to do this and had this moment this we need to take a post mortem on what's happened and decide where we're gonna go but somebody's gotta just say stop for a second you guys need you guys needed a good marriage counselor in your corner to start with and just the business will not heal until your marriage us right we. We have done marriage counseling literally a little about a year and a half ago And didn't do it. Well apparently not. Why did they go. Why didn't it go well He kinda just checks outs We've even done business. Coaching and You know i'm saying two different counselors business coach Literally fired us a year and a half ago or two years ago because he wouldn't participate We were in coaching for fifteen months and he just wouldn't do his part of a t. Woods wouldn't schedule for our our weekly sessions things like that. He just wouldn't he checks out and not doesn't even give a reason just checks out and doesn't do it And it was kind of the same way in our marriage counseling. I mean he attended 'cause we went together but he would just kind of clam up and and nothing really was being said from his his point and he did tell me he didn't like the the counselor the marriage counselor that he didn't like he didn't trust him or something and It just didn't go anywhere and literally since that time. We've just kinda quit talking literally so your your your relationship If you stop and step out of it for a minute it's unlike support. Yes And i would say you're you're in an emergency status and it sounds like you've got a guy that's that is unable to say. Hey i'm done with this thing is unable doesn't end. I don't blame. You don't have the tools or as a coward or whatever you want to say. But he's unable to say. I'm through with this thing and he's going to slowly suffocate. It and somebody's got to turn all the lights on in that house and send the kids away for a weekend and say we've got a gotta take an inventory because what he's communicating to you is. He is finished and he doesn't have the courage to say he's done or he scared of you or he doesn't want to be in this business anymore. He doesn't know how to say it out loud. Somehow he is slowly pulled this thing underwater counseling. We call it the one down position. But he's drowned in the house slowly but surely and Usually the your your role in this is to try to keep yanking as hard as you can the other direction and it just creates this tension that ends up sinking the boat anyway. So you've got to just stop. Stop the music and say are you done with this marriage. I'm not going to continue to participate in crazy the way it exists. No i'm going to say we're going to do something different now. Do you want to work on this. And he'll it. If you do that involve hugh finding a counselor that you trust that. We can sit down with that. You're willing to open up in front of and to get stuff fixed otherwise it's just gonna continue to deteriorate. This is not working. You know continuing to do the same thing over and over again expecting a different result Saying you know if you're seeking outside it direction and you're not taking direction from outside. That's him there. There has to be a reason. Yeah i and You know. I can buy i. I've sat down with people that i didn't trust and i'm not gonna open up in front of them absolutely not doing that. I can buy that as a reason but the the answer is not nothing. Then the answer is go. Find a different counselor right. So he's communicating to you. If you won't find another counselor that is a. That's a communication to you that i'm done with this or he's just doesn't have the tools to to work this through whatever it is but yeah you gotta have somebody in your corner at least guiding you through these tough discussions that you have got to have immediately. The business is not got a chance. Now until the marriage ups. Thanks for tuning into the ramsey call of the day. Check out all of our podcast. Just search ramsey network on apple podcasts. "dr john baloney" Discussed on The Dave Ramsey Show

"Dave ramsey your host dr john baloney ramsey personality is my co host today. Open phones here at triple eight eight to five five two two five. Elizabeth starts this hour in san antonio. Hi elizabeth how are you honey. I'm doing great So what's going on. I actually wish. I was calling to say it could do my debt free scream. I've been wanting to do that for a long time We are debt free. The house is paid off. The cars are paid off everything I'm working fulltime in a student. Also and then In about a year. I'll go full time Where i won't work also for nursing And my husband. He works fulltime. He's phd scientists and then we have Eighteen year old son who has moved out and started a business. You didn't want to go to college don today. okay just wanted to laid the foundation. So we've got everything paid off and my husband wants to buy an all electric vehicle and we were going to Say but for it to pay cash and currently we'd have tim prius that are Not the plug in kind and friendly now today. He wants to go purchase it. He feels like there's a sudden that we need to do it now because of everything that's going on in the world and that this is the time not wait so we're also cash flow in my school and so we have going on in the world that demands that you get a plug in vehicle. Today i missed. I didn't watch the news this morning. So he feels like a we Like potentially in the future and that we yeah yeah and we would be better off getting out that are you telling me the guy has a phd and he truly believes there's gonna be nestling not no gas. No just okay. So we're both very frugal and we So you know what is going on in the world. The demands that you buy an electric vehicle. You said he th with all that's going on in the world. What the crap does that mean. Well that the demand for electric vehicles is going up and that they are harder and harder to get and there's a long wait list for you know all the ones that are on the market right now An electric vehicle. I don't wanna wait. Wait and saw. Just no up to worry about okay. So what's your household income so our household income is about a hundred and fifty five thirteen and make about forty three. What are you gonna. what are you buying. what kind of car is he wanting. A tesla So we're between the vw Id four. The molten has just recalled on friday so we can't get that one which was much less expensive and then our only other option tesla So let me help you. With the math startling you can drive that freaking tesla to the moon back and mathematically you will never justify how much more you spent on the tesla than you're paying then you then the value of your prius. You know how much time it's gonna take you to recoup forty five thousand dollars an electric and gas savings the rest of your freaking life. Okay let me just tell you. Mathematically this asinine that. We're using the idea that were saving money because we're frugal to get an electric car. Now if you want to go get tesla fine. Go get your tesla but pay cash for it. But you don't you don't say oh everything that's going on in the world and we're frugal people because both of those things are stupid but statements because they don't have anything to do with reality okay. The you know everything that's going on the world they're making tesla's you can test. I mean there's not you know and they're they're not gonna be like not able to get one if you're not able to get one like a delorean that means you didn't want one because i went broke. Okay andy. lon didn't make it. You know but but the but if you get one which is fine. I got several friends at the bottom. I prefer motor. But that's okay get you get you a battery. It's okay and so but but the point is you guys make enough money pay cash for a sixty thousand dollar car Here's what i think in cash you whether you buy win when our brains go to fight or flight when we're scared. It actually has a cool bypass mechanism in your brain that turns off your critical thinking part of your of your brain because you it didn't want you sitting at the front of a cave wondering is that a nice tiger or is that a fluffy wanna petting tiger. It just wanted you to run or to grab a stick and go to war because if if it happened to be a mean tiger you thought it was a nice when you were going to be dead right. And so it's a cool little feature our brains have where it trades. It trades speed for accuracy close enough in it. Sounds like you've got a husband who loves you. Love your kids and his consuming twenty four seven three sixty five news. And he's worked himself up in a panic and he's sitting there at home and at home and at home over need to do. I need to do something to do something. And he can go down a rabbit hole. That's gonna shoot him out one media Slide that's gonna tell them we're gonna be at oils gonna be one hundred seven dollars a gallon. It's going to be this and that and then he's comes up with the solution that makes no mathematical sense. Rational sense climates inex-. No since but it feels like it's a right thing to do. "That we know our story that i know my strengths and my struggles then operate differently in this world in every relationship including that relationship with my kids and so. I don't think we can dive deep enough into that place as parents which is so in keeping with the very thing we're talking about today of. I can't do that well without some support. Like i can't see everything that's true about me. I'm limited by my perspective. I need other is on my life. In a way that there's opportunity for growth and development that benefits my work have benefits. My marriage benefits my parenting. And i think it's the wisdom to you know if you are driving down the road and the check engine. Light comes on my car. Like i'm not gonna assume. I know how to diagnose the circumstance and i need a mechanic and that is a good thing for folks who trained in how to deal with my car like. It's fascinating to me that we would assume that posture with our vehicle or with different parts of our lives but one with our own wellbeing health and i think it's just a good thing to put other is on a circumstance that someone could see something i can't see and create opportunity for growth. I love that analogy because everyone listening like well. Yeah my check engine. Light came on for sure. Take it to the to the shop. But there i feel like to. And i've talked to dr john baloney one of our ramsey personalities. About this i like. They're they're still even in our even my generation of of parents individuals There's this stigma around counseling. There's the stigma around seeking out. Help i know the older generations like they're definitely is with my mom's generation. The baby boomers like if you go to counseling like you must. Something's wrong with you you. you're crazy person. Whenever which is not at all true like you said a well checkup as a great example. Talk a little bit about. Maybe some people that feel resistant to getting help and counseling is not the only way to help but as an example resistant to seeking the expert..

I'm good how are you better than i deserve deserve. How can john and i help. Well i don't honestly. I'm not sure that i'm asking the right question but i. I'm struggling with feeling. Like if i approach my mother-in-law i this respect my husband Because my mother-in-law Talk negatively about me to family and friends when she is upset and honestly. I'm not sure why it started Shortly after we became married we've been married. Almost six years have two great children And it's just kind of getting worse. So i don't i know i can't control other people but i want to support and respect my husband and every which way because He leaves a wonderful family and for example when she gets upset give me an example of them so the most recent was she was in disagreement with Her other son and She then called him disrespectful and isn't sure where he learned that and said that i must be rubbing off on him as well So is he immediately. Mom do not disrespect my wife. That was her son her brother now that that was my brother-in-law But he shared he shared that with my husband and yes my my husband immediately talked to her and said don't ever do this again. Oh For you know but but this is. It's not the first time. And i know it's not going to be the last time for hours. What's her reaction winter. Call you when our son calls her on the carpet. Your husband and says you can talk about my wife like that. come on. what's your problem. Stop it what did she say right. There's no apologies. They're blaming of either him or i She's never wrong with it. Okay so there's really it's really two choices. You got Right choice number one is let your husband know. Hey i feeling this burning a muscle. I want to sit down with her and just ask. I'd love to make peace with the grandparents of mac. The grandmother of my kids right. You'd have to understand and you make peace with the fact that piece may never come and at the end of the day. You've got to unhitch yourself from this woman who's just choosing to bring poison into your life and i know that sounds trite and silly and how much supposed to do that. At the end of the day you're gonna have to make a decision..

Yeah i think they had to do to survive and it's kind of barbell after twenty twenty right everybody either is looking at record profits but suddenly they got more employees their businesses. Not what they knew it to be or and they owned a dance studio or a karate studio and overnight it just went away and everybody's launched out of that. They looked up eight months later. Man they don't know their kids their spouse. They thought they could just treat yourself. It'd be okay man. People are really struggling. I'll speak for myself and say we had record profits more than we had anticipated And certainly more than we anticipated in the middle of the pandemic because it scared the bejesus out of everybody me included in terms of what it would do to the business. What would it do. The thousand people that i'm responsible for paying their payroll. I'm responsible for their kids eating as a result in the stress of that. But now we're the side of it and we've got these unbelievable profits but here's what. I probably only do my counseling on the monsters out there. But i think it's representative. I really do Looking my shoulder Like is there another thing coming. What are the stupid but stuff is the government gonna pull. What other stupid but stuff is somebody going to blow the mathematics up and make everybody completely irrational. "Dave Ramsey, your host, Dr John Baloney. Ramsey personality is my co host today. Opened phones at Triple 882552 to 5. That's triple 882552 to 5 as we talk about your life, That's why Dr John's here and your money That's why I'm here, and we'll probably both interrupt each other as we go along. It's kind of what we do here. Jamie is with us. Jamie is in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Hi, Jimmy. Welcome to the Ramsey Show. Dave, How are you better than I deserve. What's up? Oh, I wanted to ask you about a little bit of a saddle plan on buying my first home. Um, I have enough cash to buy it. She picks her upper and paid cash without a mortgage. But the problem I have is I need a garage on site. Big enough for one small business. Adults on guy can't afford property with a big garage in the house. So I have to say you're Elvis on better off buying the house, paying cash it and financing put in the building up or the other way around. Mm. Well, I guess it's ah, if it's the same amount of money that you're going into debt. Either way, it's just whichever property you want to end up with right. I guess, but being self employed, it's very difficult to get a mortgage. I was kind of figuring that if I had a property and help the deed to it, it be easier to get a loan for the building. No, no, no, no, no, Be the exact same thing. Because in both cases, if you're struggling to get a mortgage, you're gonna be going to a local bank or other than a traditional mortgage company. So, of course, the other option is to, uh, you know, buy a property to live in and rip your garage somewhere else. Well, the problem. The problem I have with that is I'm I'm sick of ranking. Um And I have Ah, have a young song that I take care of every day. He comes to work with me now, and I'm reeling that realizing that in this post coded world we're gonna within that They're going to cancel school for any time Somebody gets the sniffles, so I figure Better off being prepared to have him there every day with me, right? You know, you understand what I mean. I want to be able to work and live in the same property. So that you're single Dad. No, no, he his mother works full time and I take him to work with me so he doesn't have to go to daycare and stuff like that. So I'm a full time dad. Part time business owner. I guess you could call me You sound like somebody that's on the back end of a really frustrating trying exhausting year. And who was just fed up with the way that the politics and schools and a lesbian run, especially up there on screen. And I would suggest not going into a long term. Dead. 5 10 15 20 year commitment financially over of a current Justin exhaustion in a frustration right now. No, I Agree. I don't know when Uh, Schools are going to normalize, but to project that they're never gonna normalizes is not accurate, right? Um and, uh I don't know exactly what's going to occur, but Is the entire public school system in America going to be App to shut down was sniffles from today forward Now, is it in some places right now? Yes. Is it not in some places right now? Yes, there there. I mean, we're in Middle Tennessee, and it's pretty well open on. They're not freaking out. They freak out more about tornadoes than they do covert right now. And so, um Um, more likely to shut down for that s O. That That's to tell you that it has normalized here. I guess if if you want to call the phrase noise normalized is a good word. I'm not sure it is a good word, but anyway Toe. Doctor John's point, Jamie, I agree. I would not Build a life around this current circumstance. Wouldn't build a dad and home purchase around this current circumstance. Um and but it sounds to me like you just don't want to rent and you're using this is a justification to so I'm buying a house and written a garage. And if kids gotta go to work with a couple times while you rent a garage, I just do that. And, um especially while this is a part time business, Yeah. Yeah. Or you know, by house and have a small mortgage on this Got a garage. I don't care, And you can get that at your local credit union or whatever on if your wife has a full time job and makes an income. And you have a part time business that makes a profit that you pay taxes on properly. You are bankable for a loan. In that case, If you're trying to make zero money on this garage and show that on your taxes because you're taking everything under the table, then you need to do your taxes properly and not take it all under the table and that'll help you get the loan. By the way, but you're also supposed to be paying taxes on their money, or you're really not making any money. You're not making a profit legitimately, in which case you're not bankable. So that's another thing. And oh, in which case you wouldn't need to be running a garage, either, because if you want a garage for a cool hobby Where you're building something or make it something that you like, But you're not making money on it. Exactly. Alex is with us in Sioux Falls. Hey, Alex. Welcome to the Ramsey Show. All right. Thank you. What's up? So I've kind of dug myself a pretty big hole relationship wise and Financially. Mom about 55,000 in debt, not including my mortgage. Yeah. Student loans, credit cards and home equity loan..

"Dr John Baloney. Ramsey personality is my co host today. Here on the air opened phones a triple 882552 to 5. Jamie is whether it's Jamie is in Sarasota, Florida. Hi, Jamie. How are you? I'm doing well. How are you and John? Do it Great. How can we help guys when they go straight to the point? I'm 38. Married. Have a child one underway. Yea egress, baby, I know. Thank you, baby. Step six. Um we all on our mortgage 13,000. We have about 27,000 in savings, So we're going to pay that bad boy pretty soon right today in the next like in the next like, few hours. Yeah, congrats. Oh, yeah. Um, So I have a two part question with that background. Um, uh, number one person foremost, this is not our forever home. In fact, we're probably going to be here. Probably another two. I'm assuming 23 years, tops before my job moves me again on I'm wondering person foremost, should I invest into this home? They like gutters and fences and all that. And my second part to this question. Is that now that the home's gonna be paid off Now, like Mm hmm. Okay, Well, now, what is you, Max out all retirement and you begin to save outside of that towards your next purchase, And I've been doing this show coming up on 30 years. It's only in about the last five years that I've heard the phrase forever home. Because most people know there's no such thing. You will never have a forever home. You're only forever home is heaven because no matter where you move, you're gonna move again. You're not going to stay your life changes your face of life changes and everything else. So anyway, it's It's just not a house. You're gonna stay in and you're gonna move in the next 2 to 3 years. That's awesome. That's cool. So what, what repairs or enhancements do you do to it? Once there two types, ones that are small enough that you can live up the enjoyment. In other words, whatever you spend if you spend a you got two little babies and you spend a couple 1000 bucks on a fence in the backyard, and it helps. You know that little babies play in the backyard or safe and not running that wild out in the neighborhood or something. Then that's probably worth that, even if the fence doesn't have value to the house. Okay? So that that's one type of thing you would do. You know what? Just a small enough investment that when you move, you just burned that money. And it was just for the good of the three years of enjoyment. Okay, the second. That type of thing you would do is you would talk to an E l P er, one of our real estate endorsed local providers. And just say, Okay, I'm thinking of spending this on the kitchen sink. It's been $7000 in the kitchen in a house that's worth X. Do you think I'll get my money back? I don't think so. Well, you might mean something's your mind How badge attention is okay, but, you know doesn't increase the value. Dollar for dollar. Amillia. Then you're spending doesn't mean if you spend 7000 increases the value the home 10. That's probably a good thing, right? So you would do those kinds of things that increase the value equal to the thing you want to do. Our more, especially if it's more you would do some stuff like that. So gutter sounds like normal repairs that should have already been done. We've been here in the house for about two plus years. So, Yeah, that was probably gonna be my next project E mean, if the roof is leaking, you gotta do that, regardless because it's just to repair has to be done. Yeah, right. I mean, we thought the house brand new So we weren't you know, doesn't need cutters after three years if it was brand new Well, that's really why I am asking is like Is it even worth investing in? No. Why does it not have gutters? We just didn't come together since they, uh They don't put anybody on the last year, but it's a, um, I said that home the type of home you bought at the price range of all just did that The standard model didn't have gutters, okay? So then the question question. Ask yourself if you get a bit on gutters and ask yourself in my increasing the value of the home by that, or am I going to get enjoyment of that much either one. Good news is guttering on basic guttering system or something like that a continuous flow. They bring the trucks out. It's a pretty cool thing. They do something. It's not very expensive, eh, So it's not. It's not a super high. Item. But my guess is you bought a neighborhood that no last time I've got so it's not like it's devalue in the house and let's just causing damage or something else. So you just gotta look at all that and just kind of go. Okay. Is this a repair? It should be done anyway. Are my doing something that's not done in the neighborhood unexamined? Well, an extreme example would be if there are no swimming pools in your neighborhood. And you put in the swimming pool. You're gonna lose 80% of the money you spent on that It is not going to increase the value of the home but about 20% of the cost. And so most of that you got to a lot of swimming in three years come up, you know to make that make sense, right? You going about their everyday so otherwise? It just didn't make sense. But that's that's the thing. You look at his am I increasing the value more, or at least as much as I am spending. Jakes in Atlanta. Hi, Jake. How are you? Good. How you doing? Did great man. What's up? My wife and I are here. We have just a couple questions about, like next step. So we've been following your plan for several years. Um, let us to being debt free in 2019 Way to go was thank you, which was Good timing, considering 2020 happened right after that, So currently where we stand. I'm in the film industry. My wife is a marketing director for a real estate company. I'm star income fluctuates from time to time. You know, there's years that are Really, really good two years there, you know, descending Well, the bills paid and we have a little bit of extra stating as probably having a great year and you're not. Yeah. Yeah, Basically all could that I was on unemployment. Um, so that kind of threw obviously big wrench in our plans because we were looking to buy home. Uh, come February of last year. We actually found out we were pregnant. So we have a brand new daughter, right? Was born in October. Um and we are stuck in a one bedroom locked right now, so the space is Very tight, but we have I'm definitely the best we possibly can considering where we're at on. We'd like to buy house. Um, we'd like to, you know, get into the steps of like a possible 5 29. You know, investing, you know, doing everything that we can do? Tow master, my where we're at right now. We kind of don't know what to tackle. First I'm back at work. Okay, So you are dead free 100% cause you're renting you have an emergency fund of 3 to 6 months of expenses. We do we have about 18 K. You know everything good. Okay. And are you putting money into retirement? Yeah. No, because we put that on hold so we could pay off all the debt. Okay? And now are you going to keep it on hold to save up for a down payment on the house? If you do, that's OK, That's one of our plans. We were thinking about that. But I You know, I'm 35. She's 32. So for 10 years With that, you know, I say for 10 years you're safe for 10 months. Correct? Yeah, for house. Yeah. Yeah, That's what I mean. You're not gonna stay out of retirement long if you do, But if you want to go and start retirement and safer house that's fine. Or sometimes people pause on retirement just a little bit and do what we call baby. Step three B and safer house. So four is 15% of your income into retirement vibe. This kid's college of sixties pay off the house that you haven't yet bought. Correct. And that's the baby steps. And if you'll just work on that way, you're gonna get to everything. You're gonna have a baby. Your baby's gonna have a college fund..
