"United states Dr Jerome Adams for the latest updates from the coronavirus task force on that's gone as well along with very well good morning we we talk a lot about New York and and have your kiddos the epicenter of this and I think that's a lot because of glaucoma is out in front of the cameras all the time and then it's it's on your television set because Cuomo Cuomo is out there because New York right now is is ahead of everyone else as far as the the progress of the disease but Florida also is starting to to turn into we're gonna get more more cases to the point where we talked about yesterday if you're coming in from the western part and into Florida they have road blocks and if you have a Louisiana places place you're getting your getting pulled over and that they're going to if they're checking you to see if you have a temperature they're gonna they're going to see and see if you're sick they're doing the same thing on ninety five and they are checking for New York New Jersey plates to see if they're sick because people are fleeing those states where there are more more cases and they're heading to states where they may have a vacation home and some states are even cracking down on all of the R. BO and other rentals and saying nope you know you can we don't want people coming here and fleeing and coming here because we don't have cases and possibly bringing the illness with us all make sense well fort Lauderdale the mayor there dean trans Halas he is fighting a cruise ship that wants to dock at a nearby port at port Everglades cruise port and he said it's unfair because it's unfair to them it is unfair to us it's Holland America cruise ship Veendam about a hundred and thirty people on board the ship have reported flu like symptoms for elderly passengers have died on the cruise ship yeah there are over twelve hundred people on it five hundred and eighty six crew it left Argentina on March seventh and has not been allowed to dock for more than two weeks now what I had when we what why would we allow these people to dock here why why would we allow them to doctor and he says it's unfair because of these people just me dumped on our shores and laughter we're trying to hold this together people around a work people are staying home we don't need to dump a bunch of infected people on our shores and and and I agree with him another another Holland America should the Rotterdam delivered medical supplies and medical personnel to the sand dam on on Thursday and healthy passengers were transferred to the Rotterdam yeah I don't know if they're gonna keep them quarantined for for fourteen days and he said now they have to ship sailing toward the airport they do not we do not have the medical facilities in order to be able to accommodate them so I don't know if it's can you tell me why the United States would allow this I don't understand why we do this this doesn't make any sense to me yeah we need to obviously look out for American citizens first here I mean that's that's the principal concern and and then once we get done taking care of America we can help other farmers out and the president has suggested as much but it would be insanity frost to let foreign flagged ships carrying foreign citizens to land anywhere in the country especially if they are racked with corona virus right now she just be blank it's true whether or not there is illness on board a cruise ship there that should just be the case right now we should just stop cruise activity it seems like when the more obvious things to do yeah I agree with you and and the you know he did say that the White House is gonna make sure that the ship does not land either one of those ships land in Florida but I I just love that everybody's like I would just go to America they'll take care of us well there they've always fallen for before exactly it is so true well it's like we we were we we were talk about this back in in the beginning of March when were you were talking about how we weren't stopping of flights coming from South Korea and and from Japan and and from and from these other area of Asian countries because Chinese people as people were fleeing those countries to come to the United States because of the virus will we why are we allowing this to happen again and look what happened look where we are we're big red dot on the crown of virus nap speaking of the coronavirus map there is a researchers have created a model of one corona virus deaths will peak in each state sure and a demand for hospital services in each state they say the US is projected to be fifteen days from the worst of it they're predicting R. two thousand deaths of living over two thousand just to cry on April fifteenth well that's ironic and a shortage of sixty one thousand hospital beds is a New York will see its apex on April tenth they're predicting seven hundred ninety eight deaths that day I don't know how they come up with these numbers of Florida is it expected to become the next epicenter and that's not expected to peak until may third now did the researchers from the university of Washington's institute for health metrics created this model and it's interesting so was Florida being a month the way although if we doctors to ships you might be able to speed that puppy up by I don't know well this is consistent with what the president said this week he said two weeks from now he's expecting that we take so that that data is the same data that or at least in the proximity of the same data that he's using we'll get the new data that the White House has today yes I will get it today yes okay so that's a okay that they've promised to give us the modeling data today they told us that on over the weekend the president reiterated yesterday so we're expecting some math that I which I have to say even if we hit our peak in two weeks that's good news I think that's good news because then you're on the down side of it people can start to get back to work people can start start to get back to their lives this shorter we make this the sooner we hit this I died that to me is is a good thing I think that that's we we got to get people back to work and we have the governor of Florida Ron DeSantis announcing yesterday that those living in southeast Florida should stay home on until mid may but again because they are looking at their peak being in may and that that spread it pretty quickly and then he said he then later walked that back though and at a press conference that he met April fifteenth not mid may for an end date so we'll see we'll see exactly how all of that plays out but you know kind of preparing people for okay I think most people at this point who are who are working remotely from home are resigned to the fact that they're probably gonna be home till the end of April right I mean don't you think so I think most people have that in their brain right at least the end of April I'm gonna be working from home based on what the president's saying absolutely yeah now if that goes into may to me that'll be a surprise I'm I'm like mentally prepared April like the end of April that's where I am if it goes into may I think I'm gonna be very surprised about that and sad because that just means that it's taking longer and that just means the longer our economy has to tank and the longer that we have for people to be out of work so I don't like that at all they make me happy we're gonna be speaking to the Surgeon General eight thirty five we have a lot of questions for him.
US surgeon general on the coronavirus crisis
"Me I am joined by the United States Surgeon General admiral Dr Jerome Adams adeno Adams welcome it's great to have you on the program thank you for all you have been doing great to talk with you again if you I I tell you the last time we talked about opioid out corona virus that hopefully one time we can talk about something that that's positive and it's going well in this country but I tell you we're in day nine of our fifteen days to stop the spread question to their credit many people in place of the following the guidelines they're hunkering down but what I want everyone to understand is that your two weeks away from being new York city two weeks ago in New York City had less than twenty cases and now they have an attack rate equivalent to Italy and that's why we need everyone to be taking aggressive steps and not waiting until we see more cases before they stepped inside to play at home thank you for that message general how is your health how's your family's health thank you for asking about that it's tough I've got three kids at home and I'm trying to keep my wife and kids from killing each other we're trying to stay busy one of the most important thing that help people live that being socially defense doesn't mean you have to be socially disengaged but they're going out and they're hiking extent six feet apart we're trying to keep a schedule around the house we're trying to do the things that that you need to do to stay mentally and physically healthy because we know the healthier you are the more resistance you will be to the complications of coronavirus excellent now I'm going to plunge into some of the new drug application technical stuff but as journalist I need to know and I think that the country needs to know before I do that a couple of quick process questions when I see you up in front and ambassador Berks and doctor patchy and cheered I never want to see all three of you together because I never want you to to get each other infected who is deciding who shows up when for the daily briefings well that's a great question and it's funny because we can't win when one of us is missing the the the media ask where's Dr Fauci where Dr Adam where's the after party but when we're all up there together everyone says we're not modeling good behavior it's important for people to know that the White House check all about her symptoms and for temperature before we come in and we are doctors we will definitely have them bathroom breaks that this weekend stay at home if we all feel that there is a concern but we decide based on the news of the day and what we think people need to vote for president last week we knew that there was a potential shortage of blood and we felt that I was the best messenger so I was up there telling America it's still safe to go out and give blood when we need to talk about medications and and back in the virus itself you want twenty thousand who is the number one person in the world the talk about the virus and so we pick and choose based on who that need but also to try to better practice social distancing sure the message on the blood drives the Nixon foundation of which I'm also the head will be running for as a response to your request that we do so because we have the facility and I hope everyone else in America now let me ask you about two things I spent two hours talking to retired PhD toxicologist who had that left big pharma two years ago on Saturday to trying get smart I know how much I don't know but it also occurred to me do you have a registry of recently retired toxicologists epidemiologists and and are you considering gathering them someplace remote from DC to get their collective wisdom on this absolutely believe you me I am getting emails texts phone calls every point linked in from from people calling all over the the country and all over the world Toni found she have that network of people he'd been doing it since back yeah before H. I. V. and so we are listening to people were trying to bring the best advice together we are really the conduits for that information please don't think America that it's just me and Dr Burke and Dr Fauci they're deciding everything is really taking the best medical information and Dr Burkett been really good at making sure every task force meeting start with a review of the latest scientific information now I have only one recommendation and it's on behalf of me and my friends in the media would you and doctor birch and doctor felt she run a seminar on clinical trials and safety testing both on the efficacy of the treatments on the long term impact of co interventions so that we are smart we're not very smart about this people are asking dumb questions all the time they need a couple hours education will somebody give it to us collectively I don't know if you've been listening in on our task force meeting do not you but that's exactly what we've been talking about trying to do moving forward is that it once we can get into a steady groove in the important people know that us going to female one level of activation which the president did earlier this week brings in new resource in every state of activated their emergency operations center at the request of the president and that's been freed us up to be able to do more of the educational thing that we would like to do for the community so the answer is yes we are looking at trying to figure out how to get the information out to the American people so they can make informed decisions and the president has said he's hopeful the medication will work we're hopeful it medication for work and big trial starting today in New York City but we also need to collect the data so it's trust but also make sure we gather the data to protect people and please people don't do not do not drink fish cleaner fish tank cleaner we are not out there telling people to get their stuff in a way that you can because it can be dangerous and poisonous to you particularly if it's not from a medical doctor or a pharmacy about us we hope to have more information in the next coming days and weeks about how things are going in New

Surgeon General Dr Jerome Adams and member of the white house's coronavirus task force spoke to CBS this morning on the crisis for the first time we're hearing doctors say I'm scared I'm scared of leaving my children without a parent because I could possibly die doing the job that I love to do what can you say to these people today it's no longer good enough to say we're working on is coming help is on the way you have to help us understand why this is so difficult and what you guys are doing right now to remedy the situation well good morning and I didn't expect to be starting off my week with such a dire message for America but the numbers are going to get worse this week things are going to get worse before they get better and we really need everyone to understand this is serious to lean into what they can do to to flatten the curve and you talked about health care workers I'm getting those calls every minute of the day I got calls from people literally while I was sitting here waiting to talk to you when I went to health care workers of American understand these are my colleagues these are my friends and I will not rest until you all have the tools you need to kill ourselves focal Dr Adams we know everything you've just said we've all heard this a gazillion times why is this so difficult and I'm not trying to be disrespectful no no not at all so frustrated with you or not at all and I'll tell you why it's difficult because the national stockpile purchases one tenth of one percent of all the medical supplies in this country the rest of it is in the market and so we're doing a couple of things and I want people to know the tangible actions were taken and we are using the stockpile through FEMA which has been activated to level one to send out supplies and they aren't there we sent over two million mass there are supplies going out to the places most at need Washington California New York we have the military out out on the ground instead well these places we found out CDC teams to provide back up we've worked with the American society of anesthesiologists to identify seventy thousand ventilators they're in the are they can be converted so supplies are going out we know that they're not going out fast enough to keep pace with the demand and that's why the most important message I have for America is we are halfway through our fifteen days to stop the spread we need to turn this pick it off we can't we can't delete our way out of this problem we need to make short in addition to getting supplies to people that were really focusing on demand and getting people out of the streets stay at home Dr Adams the president signed the defense production act he can essentially order companies to manufacture these supplies that medical professionals so professional so desperately need at this point why isn't the government doing that the government is using the defense production act to get people to the table we've worked with three M. we worked at Honeywell they are already at Max production here's the thing people don't understand you don't need to compel someone to do something that they are already doing and so you know every single day there people looking and saying do we need to compel someone to do this let's make the call okay they're already at Max production they're already working around the clock and again we are using the stockpile and female to get resources that the people who need it we're finding new and innovative people who are stepping up and volunteering like Haynes said I would never thought that Haynes would be able to produce surgical masks are there do some math yeah we're hearing of reports of shortages on personal protective equipment and you're saying we're already at mass mass production does that mean shortages are just going to be the way it is well we know that there are going to be shortages in some areas and it's why I actually wrote an op ed calling on people to stop elective surgeries we need to make sure the supplies are getting to New York to California to Washington the put to the place and they need and they can't get there the people are out somewhere else where they don't have C. cases right now doing elective procedures we want to make sure we strategically moving the up the personal protective equipment supplies to where it is most needed and that's both apply in driving down

Coronavirus can persist in air for hours and on surfaces for days
"Joining us now is Surgeon General Dr Jerome Adams he's often referred to as the nation's top doctor Dr Adams thank you very much for joining us glad to be here nor there is a new study out today from the national institutes of health but says the virus can live on surfaces for up to days twenty four hours on cardboard two to three days on plastic and stainless steel what do Americans need to know to protect themselves well the most important thing for Americans to know is that they should clean their surfaces frequently and that they should wash their hands frequently because the two ways you're going to transmit corona virus from a surface is by having a dirty surface around your house in my not washing your hands after you touch

Trump says coronavirus "will go away" and to "stay calm"
"The hour Congress and the trump administration seem to be making progress in deciding how the federal government will respond to the coronavirus Capitol Hill correspondent Linda Kenyon has the story president trump is focusing on ways to blunt the viruses impact on the overall health of the economy like through a payroll tax cut for example this is a great feeling about doing a lot of things and that's one of the things we've done the president was speaking to reporters after meeting with Senate Republicans on Capitol Hill his proposal for payroll tax cut falls flat with house and Senate Democrats like senator Ron Wyden it doesn't do a lot for people who rely on tips it doesn't do much for people who have lost ships it does very little for folks who don't have sickly still the president sought to offer some reassurance as to the American people and to major U. S. industries about the impact of the corona virus it will go away to stay calm and move away we want to protect our shipping industry our cruise industry solutions we want to protect our airline industry very important but everybody has to be vigilant and has to be careful but become is really working out democratic representative role Ruiz says the administration was a little late getting into the game they did not employ the proper aggressive early detection surveillance mechanisms that this virus warranted release was also Dr offer some basic advice stay home if you're sick but what about those who can stay home that's where paid sick leave should comments as democratic representative don Beyer we don't want people having to choose between a paycheck and preventing the spread of the disease getting tested and treated for the virus should be getting easier says vice president Mike pence after meeting with insurance company representatives pence announces several new developments all the insurance companies here for today have agreed to waive all copays on corona virus testing for extended coverage for coronavirus stream that applies to private health insurance companies but pence says that's not all they are covered through Medicare Medicaid and the vice president says the CEOs have agreed to no surprise billing despite assurances that testing and treatment will become more widely available Dr Jerome Adams a U. S. Surgeon General offers this sobering assessment we will see more cases unfortunately we're likely to see more deaths we have not hit the peak of that epidemic

S. Surgeon General offers this sobering assessment we will see more cases unfortunately we're likely to see more deaths we have not hit the peak of the epidemic quite yet Linda Kenyon Washington all right the other is that to talk about as well as we continue our way into it early Wednesday morning March the eleventh and the Stephen abjured North Carolina calls it hello Steve Hey you missed but well yes Sir absolutely well no question about it as I am earlier I've still hoping to make by fortune if I can figure out a way to make hand sanitizer out of crude oil but you know so far so good but that's the only compromise that made up finally have my personal bottle of hand sanitizer I've never had one in my life we're thinking about putting a bath tub outside our front door and filling it with vodka and anybody who comes in our house has three immerse themselves completely but the way I've always been that I drank my sanitizer so it always done pretty white hopeful okay he's seen the light it wasn't there then I I'm not feeling that good must know what you mean yeah but not this is political and it's Kerala I have that I don't think I remember a time in politics our election year when a barrister might affect the election no I can't recall one and certainly if it disrupts the economy that would hurt the president's reelection chances I bought a different route than that though again by now Joe Biden's came out in my keynote with is up victories that he won and but only his staff and a very few people were allowed to be there yes certainly the next democratic debate I heard on the need to use they'll be no spectators that is correct there will be no spectators of ex democratic debate the tapings of the TV game shows jeopardy and wheel of fortune are going to be done until further notice in studios without a studio audience and a week from this past day in Ireland St Patrick's day there will be no parades in Ireland so I get back going back to your politics your yes and Bernie we need a whole year United I would need to press the flash you know and I know nobody as the P. and that all his rallies than than the press if you don't buy ours could change the way that they are able to run the campaign although just for a while I mean I don't think anybody expects this thing to continue to be a major problem much past may maybe even April it's it's not going to go a year log like that it might to resurrect itself somewhat in the fall but in general we're heading into what may be the peak of the problem but after that of it probably will subside so it'll be a a hick up now which granted is a very crucial time if you're Bernie Sanders because it's make or break time but for others such as the president I mean he's still going to be around on the ballot this November they have done I doubt that it'll be that much of a problem by the end of the summer yeah and I don't have a big problem with it anyway it set the politic just being politically correct they almost cannot condone these large crowds we're we're the top on the news every day of the corona virus so Bernie can draw large crowds I don't know that yet but Bernie can't draw a large crowd and and trump Ralph can retain the album papal you know I wish it would be almost any correct politically to to allow those sorts of gatherings right this second well it it would be a good thing you know I mean both in terms of good politics and good policy it's best not to do so you're quite right and it just so happens that it hits at a time when the the only person really hurt is that Bernie Sanders Donald trump's going to survive just nicely without the rallies for a while and Joe Biden with the momentum that he's got that he doesn't have to have them either so the only person really that affected by the corona virus would be Sanders he needs to turn something around rapidly and again he's at a time right now what he needs rallies now and this is not a good time for him to do so so he's he's in a between a rock and a hard place okay very good and I will not mind former look also I appreciate your vote yeah oh one more thing before you go at because if you go to Bernie Sanders dot com Steve that you you get to the Bernie Sanders made website right if you go to Bernie Sander S. another another former former democratic democratic presidential presidential candidate candidate is is endorsing endorsing Joe Joe Biden Biden in a video on Twitter California senator Kamilla Harris threw her support behind the former vice president saying quote I believe in joke we need a leader who really does care about the people and who can therefore unify the people and I believe Joe can do that and with us right now was ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts Steve what a difference a week makes it did you anticipate Joe Biden picking up this mode the momentum this quickly no I have not I don't think anybody did I I think what we're what we're seeing though is a fascinating phenomena based on one word and that word is fear it's fear of Donald Trump and fear of Bernie Sanders Joe Biden has not been reborn as some useful charismatics move talking energetic candidates Joe Biden today is still the same Joe Biden that people have a lot of doubts about two weeks ago two months ago two years ago the difference is that Democrats have so desperate so frantic to find somebody who can beat Donald Trump that they decided that day either as a group and individually as voters and as candidates they'll camel Harris being an example of of having to rally around somebody and then choosing between Biden and Sanders the fear of Bernie Sanders is pulling the party too far to the left so there's a lot of energy around the Biden candidacy right now but in my view it's largely negative energy it's driven by fear it's driven by desperation there are not a lot of Democrats even this morning jumping up and down in Saint Joe Biden's gonna be a great candidate a great president but this negative energy is very powerful and that's what's driving this trend do you think it's now his to lose or is it too early to say that definitely has to lose end up and I think it's gonna be very difficult for Bernie Sanders to rebound here the one variable of course the one no wild card is by himself as I say he has not been report he's still the guy who can show astounding lapses of judgment he's still the guy who could make gaffes he's still the guy who can show his age very clearly he's still the guy who can appear fumbling and uncertain and in debates with Bernie Sanders and interviews it's still entirely possible for him to make damaging mistakes I think a lot of Democrats even if they rally around by they're holding their breath and hoping that Biden will get its act together and I've seen some signs a few signs of Byton improving on the stop I think he's shown a little bit more energy I think the campaign line about I'm the candidate of those who have been left behind it counted out is a defective and powerful line really echoes of a bill to written of nineteen ninety two the comeback kid although Biden's hardly a kid he's more the comeback teaser than the comeback kid and also this line of of of appealing to the concepts of dignity and civility and normalcy I think they provide a fairly stark contrast to the president who's in the oval office now but Biden is still Biden it was all of his flaws but at this point he's the Democrats best hope and it's gonna be very difficult for Sanders to capture Steve thanks for your thoughts again this morning ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts it's also worth noting that this morning one of the former President Trump visits the CDC in Atlanta amid worries over coronavirus
"The corona virus outbreak bringing president trump to Atlanta today well here he visited the CDC headquarters where got a run down of efforts to stop the spread of the virus and tried to calm down concern this vast land of ours is great country of ours these two hundred and forty cases most of those people are gonna be fine CDC officials say there will be millions of coronavirus test available in the U. S. by the end of next week earlier today the president signing into law an eight point three billion dollar coronavirus spending bill to stop the spread of the virus the Surgeon General also traveling to the CDC with the president before that he visited the Georgia department of health making it clear that while corona virus is a concern it should not lead to panic channel two action news asked Dr Jerome Adams about a vaccine for corona virus you have to first have a vaccine which is promising then it takes a long time to actually prove safety in an even longer time to prove that it's going to work on a wider love he sends a vaccine could still be about one to one and a half years
Why doctors don't recommend face masks amid coronavirus fears
"We welcome the U. S. Surgeon General Vice Admiral Jerome Adams to talk about the disease and the government's efforts to combat it here's part of my discussion with the Surgeon General so we have just gotten reports of the eleventh confirmed death in the United States due to corona viruses including we saw the first death out in California people are anxious people are concerned about this you've been out there tweeting and giving interviews one of your tweets I want to start here was seriously people stop buying masks to talk about these sort of surgical masks you see on airplanes and in public places why did you tweet that one guy again thanks for having me on it and my heart goes out to the families who've lost individuals due to a coronavirus if you just give me a twenty second I want folks to understand what we're talking about here the corona virus for Kobe nineteen blue like illness that was first detected in China and continues to expand across the globe it's a new virus there are many unknowns and the truth is that we're expecting the situation will get worse and more Americans will become infected before it gets better but what I want people to know that the immediate risk to the general public to Americans here at home right now remains a low at this time so you asked about mask here's what I want Americans to know there are things that you can do as individuals to keep you and your family safe and everything that you shouldn't do one of the things that you can do the most effective thing you can do is to wash your hands frequently and watch them correctly for twenty seconds we tell people to ping the Happy Birthday song twice and a and watch your hands with soap and water to to make sure you're doing it effectively but one of the things that is not effective for the general public ask there are two general types of mask people think about or talk about surgical mask which of those loose fitting one in every nine to protect the wearer up to protect people from the where so again if someone is sick we have been we're a surgical mask I wear one in the operating room is an anesthesiologist so that when I cough or sneeze it's not impacting my patience but it doesn't protect the wearer from a respiratory disease like corona virus or flu the N. ninety five mask the ones that look like cones the people aware are designed specifically for health care providers and I have to get tested every year to be able to wear one of those if you don't wear right you actually can increase your risk of becoming infected because people tend to touch their face of an adjustment constantly and you could actually expose yourself to an infectious disease even also when people buy those up they're not helping themselves and they're hurting their communities because then those mask on available for health care workers who need them to respond to infectious diseases in a healthcare setting the wash your hands messages delivered and received loud and clear if I'm gonna be washing my hands and sing the Happy Birthday song twice I will do so to myself just for the sake of everyone else in the room other songs you can sing there's actually tweets going viral out there right now but other songs you can sing if you don't like Happy Birthday all right so we can do sort of a fun spin on that advice but the fundamental advice wash your hands thoroughly and frequently is good advice I do want to drill down on something that you sad because I think some Americans might see a a paradox or at least be confused by the messaging here which is it's going to get worse it is going to spread farther it is not contained bought the risk remains low I understand that those things mean different things right that it's not necessarily mutually exclusive but I think to a lot of people when you hear those messages back to back it's going to get worse but risk remains low explain the tension there well I I appreciate you giving me the opportunity there because it's important Americans put the risk into context we're terrible human beings about judging risk eighteen thousand Americans have died from the flu so far this year in this country have died from the flu there are many more many more exponentially more people who have gotten the flu and been hospitalized by the flu men have been exposed to corona virus in this country right now there will be more people who die in the next two hours from motor vehicle accidents from opioid overdoses have died from corona virus so far in this country and we want folks to know that they should be cautious they should be concerned they should take precautions but the actual risk is related to your risk of exposure and you are much more likely to be exposed to other threats in your environment including including balloon including a speeding driver including smoking cigarettes including sitting on your couch and dying of cardiovascular disease then you are too die from exposure to the corona virus right now okay all right and by the way just if you're just tuning in at the top of the show we're speaking with the U. S. Surgeon General Dr Jerome Adams he's a Vice Admiral if that's his official role as Surgeon General is title but doctor Adams on this point about the severity of the illness in corona virus again there there's a difficult line to walk here because you want to take it very seriously it needs to be taken very seriously you do not want to diminish the number of people who have died and will die from this illness by saying oh well the fatality rate is only acts and in some cases people are expecting that might be less than one percent in a country like the United States because that's still real people and that's a tragedy but is it accurate to say that for the average person who does contract corona virus if they are not elderly if they are not already seriously sick in some other way they are extremely overwhelmingly likely to survive it and in fact in many cases it would just have the effects of basically a cold we tell folks if you are healthy if you are Ianni not frail in good shape and we expect that even if you do get the corona virus which again is extremely unlikely but you will have it'll be like a bad cold or like getting the flu the people who we see are most at risk of being hospitalized and dying from corona virus around the world and in the U. S. are people who are medically frail who have comorbidities like diabetes or history of of lung disease or cardiovascular disease and or people who are elderly and so again important for folks to know your risk of being exposed at low if you are exposed in most cases you will have a mild illness I I I I I hate to make comparisons like this but our anticipation is that this will be equivalent to a like a bad flu season and we've been through this before it's important for Americans to know we've survived H. one in one in a two thousand and nine we survived the murders and sorry and we know what we need to do to protect America from this becoming substantially worse I think we will see more cases unfortunately I do expect that there will be more deaths but I again everything that Americans can do to protect themselves and most of America is at low risk okay there has been a series of critiques out there about the government's response to this having a bit of lead time right we got a heads up about what was happening in China here in the U. S. and there's a New York times headline from yesterday as corona virus numbers rise CDC testing comes under fire sub headline federal health officials botch an initial diagnostic diagnostic test and restricted widespread screening missteps and may have raised the risks to Americans critics say Dr Adams can you address these concerns that people are raising about the testing regime in this country when will the U. S. government be able to ramp up to more widespread testing and when will we know about those mitigation efforts great question guy and appear question what I was saying to folks is it number one this is a new situation we are learning as we go along when we look in the past we learned a lesson from each one and one and sorry can merge and we we we assessed at the end of the day and try to make sure we'll do better next time and there is no doubt that when we look back at our response to this situation there will be lessons learned but right now we want to know what we're doing moving forward to protect them and I'll tell you I was in Connecticut yesterday at the state public health laboratory to make sure they were getting what they needed and there are forty six state lab laboratories out there right now who are prepared to do coronavirus testing and are actively doing them Connecticut did to test this past weekend and they have the capacity to do many many more the CDC in addition to those forty six labs has substantially increased our capacity we have twenty five hundred test kits on out across the country and we certainly are are dedicated I will tell you I'm I'm on the task force and I've heard the president the vice president and secretary a dark make it clear at the beginning of every meeting at the end of every meeting Hey we need to see progress in getting more testing out to America and each and every day each and every hour of
