"Going much more slowly than the Trump administration projected. It would. So who's to blame? ABC news correspondent today. Norman Went looking for answers and joining us now exclusively is surgeon general Dr Jerome Adams. So the leaders of Operation Warp Speed have admitted the rollout of vaccines is not going as quickly as planned. Just two million vaccinations logged into the federal system falling far short of the administration's goal of 20 million vaccines by the end of the year. Do you agree with the president's assessment that fault? Lies with the local level, not the federal well. Here's what the American people need to know. There's vaccines manufacturer. There's vaccines allocated those vaccines delivered. And then there's vaccines put in arms. I used to run a state health department. People forget that we've always underfunded public health going back several decades and so chronically. We need to continue to fund state and local public health better. But I want people to know that as someone who used to run a health department. I've been out on the ground with the with the Health department since September, Dr. Burke's has been out on the ground. We've been working with them to ramp up their ability to administer these vaccines. From a federal perspective, we are on track to have 20 million people able to be vaccinated doses on the ground. By the end of next week is general partner said. So we're on track. From that perspective. We just got to help the state and local entities get those vaccines administered and into bodies and arms right because having the

"Corona virus strains emerge on ABC s this week. Dr Jerome Adams says doing the basics is even more important if people are worried about variants. Such as the one found in the United Kingdom. Cope in 19 vaccination campaign is ramping up in Europe, Reuters says Vaccination efforts are underway today in a number of countries, including Germany, Italy, Portugal and Spain. The initial drive focus is on getting the vaccination to health care workers and the elderly in extended or assisted living homes. More Republican leaders call on President Trump to sign the coronavirus relief bill. President complains the bill only contains direct payments of up to $600 for Americans who qualified. That's the latest I'm Cameron Fairchild. This is Bloomberg Daybreak weekend. Our global look ahead at the top stories for investors in the coming week. I'm Nathan Hager. Now let's send Amy Morris and R. Bloomberg 99 1 newsroom in Washington because it will be a busy next few months in Congress. With all the changes Amy All right. Thank you. Nathan, and a lot of changes are ahead with the incoming Biden administration and new faces on Capitol Hill. Bloomberg Congressional reporter Billy House joins me now, Billy want to thank you so much for taking the time with us. Good bigger Now. Things are mostly quiet right now. It is a holiday weekend, after all, but the new year faces an unusual start with the ongoing pandemic. We've got President elect Joe Biden coming right out and saying that our darkest days of the pandemic are still ahead, which seems unusual for an incoming administration. What is your read? I think that's exactly how the incoming president sees things. He has said that he wants to get work right away on such things, including a new code 19 plan and more. Funding in that regard, and also another stimulus sort of bill to get things going. The economic stimulus is going to be a topic for next year. He has already said that he is going to ask for more money from Congress. Do you see that forthcoming? I think he'll have to lean heavily on his past relationships as the senator with Republican senators. I think he and Speaker Nancy Pelosi and hoping for a larger bill. But a lot of it will hinge perhaps on which party controls the Senate, starting with the new session. Okay, So let's take a look at the Senate makeup and what you are seeing there. Those key Senate races are going on in Georgia. That election isn't until after the start of the new year after the holidays are behind us. So what's your read on those? Not necessarily asking you to predict the outcome. But if this then what? Well, I've been covering those races and the polls are everywhere because it's a runoff. And and pulling and run off is there's not really all that you think, but the deal is this right now. As a result of November, 3rd Republicans hold a 50 to 48. Uh, majority in the seats. They have been decided in the next session. But these two Georgia seats could tie things up if Democrats sweep. And if that happens, new vice President Kamila Harris will hold the deciding vote, essentially giving Democrats the new majority and making Schumer the new majority leader. So that's what we're waiting for. On January 5th even methinks the results could be called by then Who knows if they're gonna be challenged, like everything else in George has been this year. S O. Really? We're all waiting to see whether Democrats hold total control of Washington or if Republicans can hang on and keep control of the Senate. Okay, So how does this bright down if for that top tied to be broken by Senator she's not senator anymore, Vice President elect Kamila Harris for her to be the tiebreaker. For the Senate to be 50 50 than both of the Democrats would have to win that run off, but only one Republican has to win the runoff him. Am I reading that correctly? How's that breakdown? That's absolutely correct of current Republican senators Kelly La Flor and David Perdue. Our report running for real well for reelection if Just one of them wins. The Republicans retain control of the chamber. Democrats have to sweep and that means they're candidates. Jon Ossoff's Rafael won our captain beat the two different Republicans. Now you had mentioned something that Is interesting. It's sort of a side note, but I want to kind of peel back the curtain and look at how this works. You would said that this is a runoff air go the polls air all over the place. It's kind of hard to tell who's got the head the head of whomever Everything is a little bit jumbled up because it's a runoff. Why is that? Because first of all, not everybody. That votes, usually in a general election shows up to vote and these run offs that aren't held in every state. There's just all Only a couple of states have said turn offs when no candidate gets 50% plus one or a majority. So what you have is a body of voters who may or may not actually show up this time, and there's little Record whether they did beforehand and in this race in particular, there's been massive new voter registration just since November 3rd. So you have a body of voters who had never voted before. There's no history there. Posters. Some of the bench warrants they rely on to predict things aren't available in this race, and that's kind of jumble things up right now. Some polls show that the Democrats actually leave both races. But how reliable that is. Who knows Because Republicans do have a history of showing up better on Election Day. As opposed to voting by mail or early voting. All right, then let's shift from the Senate will just have to wait and see how that works out and look at the House leadership where Nancy Pelosi remains speaker of the house, But specifically, what is the status of her speakership? How is that leadership working out for this upcoming session of the House? Well, the speaker is shaking and baking and making deals and promises to members of her own caucus to make sure it's now narrow majority doesn't result in problems for her on January 6th when this Speaker. Elections occur on the floor. She can ill afford to lose much more than six or eight of her own members and remember in speaker election numbers convert for anybody. They don't have to vote for the other parties cut nominee in this case Minority leader Kevin McCarthy. They could both for anybody. Colin Powell has been voted on in the past New Gingrich years after he was speaker. So close. He cannot lose many boats to win as speaker. You need 50% of all the votes.

And there's one more thing that I want people to know. I put out a call to everyone across America who recovered from Kobe. Over 15 million people out there to consider donating plasma. You actually have a secret weapon inside you if you could cover before, but your body has produced antibodies. Bite Kobe and you could donate those two other people that holiday season. It will help them if you give the gift of light, but it will also help our healthcare workers because it will lessen the amount of time people are in the hospital. Surgeon general cites antibody treatment for Trump's vaccine delay

"But it brings in many people are asking will. Where is Trump? Is he going to do this? Should he do this? Since he's already had Cove? It was brought up over the weekend. The Admiral Jura, who is the coronavirus Testing's our said on ABC. This week program that he thinks the president should publicly get the vaccine well on another channel. The surgeon general was on the Dr Jerome Adams and he said, there's a medical reason The president's not going to get the vaccine yet. Has something to do with an experimental antibody treatment that he was given while recovering Cove in 19 in October. So I guess that's a timing thing is what they're implying that Yeah, he's going to get it, but they're waiting. On the results of that treatment before he gets the vaccine, and it's right before the show we were talking is that Would that help for people to see President Trump getting it? That was the point of having vice president Pence? Do it live on TV. It's the point of Biden and Harris doing it for presidents who said they'll do it, right? Yeah, Trump kind of get people to feel more confident so many people before the election, said if no if it's his deal, I'm not going to get it so Said a double edged sword. It could be you could be those that are like, Okay, um trumps my guy. If he's getting it, okay on, then there's gonna be like Trump's good. And I'm never doing anything Trump does. "You could hear it on the CBS television networks Sunday morning, particularly after you've pulled an all night or Saturday night to keep the government open. And to try to get to some form of stimulus. Margaret, do you have any reporting from CBS This morning is Washington about now begins its Friday morning about the likelihood that they're going to roll right into facing nation sleepless cash. Well, that's that's one of the things we're hoping to get some clarity on in the next few hours. It looks like McConnell that the Senate Majority leader, Mitch McConnell, has scheduled. Some Some votes over the weekend. Which would say Well, maybe it's not just a midnight deadline. Maybe we do roll into Sunday's. You just suggested what I hope to do by Sunday morning is level set for people and boiled it down to Okay. What does this actually mean for people in need and the economy and we're going to do that, with San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly. I'm excited to have her on the program. She's really, really, really gonna be clear on this and particularly The need for stimulus, Given the pandemic and given what we've seen just in Los Angeles is one of the Bloomberg focuses this morning, Margaret Brennan. We just saw the pageantry of the vice president, United States and Karen Pence. Getting the vaccine. Tell me how that symbolism resonates in your coverage. Well, it's an important sign. We know also that the surgeon general was beside him. Dr. Jerome Adams, who has been vocal about helping to overcome vaccine hesitancy, in particular, among communities of color where they're seeing. Some indications of just skepticism about taking this vaccine, and that is a real concern. We're going to talk about it on Sunday, hopefully with a top health official from the White House, but also with Dr Scott Gottlieb, the FDA commissioner. We're gonna talk about other problems with distribution, too, because beyond vaccine hesitancy, it's Actually getting the states to distribute things well, Azad federal government hands off vaccine. We're looking what they did with antibody treatments that are sitting unused at the time of greatest need. What's gone wrong? This is money that's involved where this dovetails into the stimulus debate. Well. States are certainly asking for financial help to distribute the vaccine and and other things. Yes, some states are blaming that others would say, Hey, the federal government took the easiest part of the logistics of getting from point A to Point B. It's It's that last mile problem. That's the most complicated and governors are being left high and dry. So there's a big public policy debate on who's who's responsible for it. But meanwhile, taxpayers paid all this money for those therapeutics and for these vaccines, so it's in All of our interest to get him out there. Margaret Brennan. I was so moved by the shock. And I mean shock folks that the president elect Has selected the gentle lady from west of Albuquerque Out Route. 66 is the next head of interior. How did Washington take this announcement cheered by liberals? Cheered by progresses but farm or a symbolism that goes back to the founding of interior. I believe 18 48. It's a historic pick. Congresswoman Deb Holland will be the first Native American interior secretary and certainly symbolic resident in particular to Native American communities s. Oh, this is going to be Important for the government relationship with indigenous people. But of course for all of us as we look at, and there's been a lot of pressure, frankly in the president elect to make sure that his cabinet reflects what the populist at large looks like. It's not just a symbolism who that person is, who gets the job? It's what they do when they get there, and I think that's where the big complications are going to be in the policy debates in the years ahead. I can't imagine what you're doing now to get ready for a Sunday given all that's going on in Washington, but how Market. I'm gonna ruin your day and leap forward. How do you treat the reporting of who will be selected? His attorney General, is it just You need more information before you can have a discourse on that? This is the favorite cocktail party or, you know, zoom parties and I went there ain't no on trust me. I have a lot of fun doing this, too. And trying Toc suss out who it could be and who still in the running. But the president elect has has kicked that one down the road for a bit, and we don't get no where his head is at. Obviously, there's this added complication. I asked one of his top advisers Cedric Richmond, about it last Sunday and saying, OK, well, you know, even if there isn't a conflict, it doesn't look great. If the Justice Department or you know, at least US attorney in Delaware is investigating the president's son. Will you appoint a special counsel? How you gonna handle that? Are you going to ask the attorney General to Rick Use his or herself from a future that so there's a lot of baggage that goes with this selection on Dat. Maybe why we're seeing a delay. In or delay may not be fair, but we haven't seen that selection yet. Right? Well safe. We will see good luck and getting to Friday night.

"So all of that, and more is on the way. First up. I'm joined by the U. S surgeon general Dr Jerome Adams for an update on the current code 19 outbreak here in the U. S. And the latest on the development of Corona virus vaccines. Dr Adams. Thank you for the time. We know you're busy, and we really appreciate it. Let me start with the big picture. Look at where things stand with the current outbreak happening across The country. Great place to start. We are still seeing record cases every day, which turn into record hospitalization and, unfortunately record numbers of people. Dying. Why is it different than the last several times We told you this Well. The first two searches were very regional New York, then the Southwest. This one is hitting our entire country at once, and that's really putting a strain on healthcare capacity. So it's incredibly important that we take steps to slow the spread, keeping household gathering small and then my www wearing a mask, washing your hands and watching your distance, But the other big message I want to give people Is that there's hope, uh, these these surges or this surge is different because we actually have a finish line in sight. We're going to start back from meeting the vulnerable as early as next week. So I'm just really calling on your listeners to hang in there just a little bit longer, so that it many people of possible Get across the finish line of the marathon with us on, uh and you can play a role in doing that. I know travel and get togethers related to Thanksgiving was a major concern among public health officials. There's always a bit of a lag between when an event occurs and win. An outbreak is picked up. When do we expect to see the impact of the Thanksgiving holiday show up in the numbers? Well, actually, I've been talking to many of my colleagues across the country and they're starting to see the Thanksgiving cases come in right now. I want people to understand. It takes an average of five days, but up the 14 days after you've been exposed to show symptoms, so we usually say it takes about two weeks. 1 to 2 weeks. Start seeing the cases. And then it takes another 1 to 2 weeks for those cases to turn in the hospitalization and then yet another two weeks or so before people start dying, So if we do everything right today, we're still gonna be in for a hard 4 to 5 weeks moving forward. And we're starting to see that Thanksgiving surge. If you have symptoms, you should definitely go in and get tested. But if you were engaged in a high risk activity at any point, meaning you were around people outside of your household without a mask on you should consider getting tested because that will allow you to make intelligent.

"To mask or not to mask that is the question Micheli the CDC the World Health Organization and my office recommended against the general public wearing masks and Surgeon General Dr Jerome Adams who now tells ABC they've learned more about the coronavirus we've asked the CDC to take another look at whether or not having more people wear masks will prevent transmission of the disease two other people after Anthony Fauci America's top infectious disease experts some rationale that the person in the street who may not know they are infected could actually prevent the spread to other people by wearing masks this hasn't been proven we know the master not a hundred percent effective and ABC's own Dr Jennifer Ashton says it's thought based on this find this study that twenty five percent of people infected with corona virus can have no symptoms at all and the people who are infected can spread the virus forty forty eight hours before they

"Dr Jerome Adams is with us on merry Walter and I am here with the vin Scully scored and well good morning to you up everybody's doing well under your social distancing or not paying attention to the rules at all either way we're just glad you're with us this morning the you're right merry you've got a number of areas who have issued stay at home orders and that includes everyone in our area the D. M. V. Maryland Virginia and the district have all issued stay at home orders as of yesterday which mandate that residents essentially stay at home except for some of those required needs to sell like running out to the supermarket for instance to get food that's an exception to that but this place is a mandate on what they've previously been asking residents to do on a voluntary basis and I want to get your reaction to whether or not this is just right not enough for going too far in your view well do you know the the measure this morning on this because we've got a number of different roles in each of the areas but I want to specifically focus on the date this morning that this thing ends first I want to get your calls eight eight eight six three zero nine six two five eight eight eight six three zero W. M. A. L. Maryland has not given a specific end date for when the stay at home order concludes we do not know governor Hogan did not issue a specific end date for that that's it that's it so we got some uncertainty there the district has said that their orders going to take effect until April twenty fourth according to mayor Muriel Bowser now that's consistent with the president giving issuing his new guidelines through the end of April so that's basically on the same time frame as the federal government's guidelines and then meanwhile in Virginia Ralph Northam says that his order is gonna remain in force until June tenth that is ten weeks away from where we are right now J. tenth is how long Ralph Northam has stretch this out to merry what do you make of these these days and the arbitrary nature by which each region has picked a date I will tell you when I heard June tenth I had to go back and read it again I was like what June tenth dear lord that's that that's that's insane how do people live their lives in two months I just and and I guess I look at June tenth that's that's after Memorial Day you're into this summer this seems so far away and so for me I thought that's just crew Razi that's crazy but I see both sides to it I kinda see meant for me is a more of a mental game for pop up for part of it I also worry about the economics of it I know yesterday found out from two different people who lost their jobs yesterday yeah and these are not people I mean these these are people who are high up in management and got that's it scea by Adios well they get their jobs back there are no no clue so that's even more uncertainty so when they hear something like June tenth therefore what being out right but these so I can see both sides of it so so the negative to me with the June tenth thing and there was like two months away you're gonna be doing this for two months I just don't think people have the attention span for it number one I just think people are just not it's not gonna last that long people are not going to do it they don't have the ability to physically do it or mentally do it for that long but I couldn't see the value in it because in a way I'd rather say have them say June tenth and then you're like oh my gosh it's over may tenth that's great and then you're all happy but on the other hand how do you make plans if you don't know like if if it's going to be till June tenth how do you plan that out as your life mmhm that's hard but if they tell me two weeks and then extended two weeks then extended two weeks of the extended two weeks that's also a whole different mind game that they're playing with me now well so I see the positives and the negatives to both of these yeah I see the positive negative is mentally I see the positives and the negatives from planning your life that could affect that this this could affect when they come out and say June tenth this can fix this can positively or negatively affect you know your life forever with employers in Virginia here June tenth they're gonna make plans for June tenth now I'm adding that that includes maybe you know deciding that were never bringing people back or we're just shutting our doors forever when and then it's over may tenth in awe you've negatively impacted them yeah I can see both right I don't need the government to tell me are you know not to make plans to go to a dance venue or a dance gathering before June tenth you don't have to put a date on the calendar for me it doesn't change my planning at all you know I mean so I'm gonna I'm gonna be in a position where I'm gonna make these decisions regardless in order for the safety of my family additionally I think that Ralph Northam has been a Johnny come lately on a bunch of these policies that he saw himself getting outmaneuvered by Larry Hogan who looked like he was doing things in a strong way and a lot of people court sizing or them so he over compensated in the way that he did that he ended school for the entire school year preemptively and he decided he was gonna put a stay at home or in place preemptively through June tenth rather than say this is a dynamic situation we should measure what's actually happening on the ground and respond in kind northern trust comes flying in and says we're doing exam home order till June tenth I think I think it's preposterous to come out with that long of a declaration and not to measure how things are actually going in the Commonwealth we may have an answer to this pollen Alexandria may have the key to why it's June tenth Paul good morning your mornings on the mall good morning hi good what what do you think this is June tenth well all the Republican primary is June learns and good day this thing just think he's playing politics in order to prevent people from voting in the Republican primary on June ninth well I have no idea is bad so I can't read his mind but a very good friend of mine who is highly is very involved in the current political race the race is going on in Virginia told me that yesterday I would say any Republicans that would like to see turnout at the polls on on June ninth in the primaries statewide primary would be kind of looks at yeah that's very interesting Paul thank you for that we thank Vince I'm I'm just looking at the details and try to see what actual elections are happening at that point because the twenty twenty presidential primary was canceled by Republicans in Virginia okay all right I'll give you more details.

"Me I am joined by the United States Surgeon General admiral Dr Jerome Adams adeno Adams welcome it's great to have you on the program thank you for all you have been doing great to talk with you again if you I I tell you the last time we talked about opioid out corona virus that hopefully one time we can talk about something that that's positive and it's going well in this country but I tell you we're in day nine of our fifteen days to stop the spread question to their credit many people in place of the following the guidelines they're hunkering down but what I want everyone to understand is that your two weeks away from being new York city two weeks ago in New York City had less than twenty cases and now they have an attack rate equivalent to Italy and that's why we need everyone to be taking aggressive steps and not waiting until we see more cases before they stepped inside to play at home thank you for that message general how is your health how's your family's health thank you for asking about that it's tough I've got three kids at home and I'm trying to keep my wife and kids from killing each other we're trying to stay busy one of the most important thing that help people live that being socially defense doesn't mean you have to be socially disengaged but they're going out and they're hiking extent six feet apart we're trying to keep a schedule around the house we're trying to do the things that that you need to do to stay mentally and physically healthy because we know the healthier you are the more resistance you will be to the complications of coronavirus excellent now I'm going to plunge into some of the new drug application technical stuff but as journalist I need to know and I think that the country needs to know before I do that a couple of quick process questions when I see you up in front and ambassador Berks and doctor patchy and cheered I never want to see all three of you together because I never want you to to get each other infected who is deciding who shows up when for the daily briefings well that's a great question and it's funny because we can't win when one of us is missing the the the media ask where's Dr Fauci where Dr Adam where's the after party but when we're all up there together everyone says we're not modeling good behavior it's important for people to know that the White House check all about her symptoms and for temperature before we come in and we are doctors we will definitely have them bathroom breaks that this weekend stay at home if we all feel that there is a concern but we decide based on the news of the day and what we think people need to vote for president last week we knew that there was a potential shortage of blood and we felt that I was the best messenger so I was up there telling America it's still safe to go out and give blood when we need to talk about medications and and back in the virus itself you want twenty thousand who is the number one person in the world the talk about the virus and so we pick and choose based on who that need but also to try to better practice social distancing sure the message on the blood drives the Nixon foundation of which I'm also the head will be running for as a response to your request that we do so because we have the facility and I hope everyone else in America now let me ask you about two things I spent two hours talking to retired PhD toxicologist who had that left big pharma two years ago on Saturday to trying get smart I know how much I don't know but it also occurred to me do you have a registry of recently retired toxicologists epidemiologists and and are you considering gathering them someplace remote from DC to get their collective wisdom on this absolutely believe you me I am getting emails texts phone calls every point linked in from from people calling all over the the country and all over the world Toni found she have that network of people he'd been doing it since back yeah before H. I. V. and so we are listening to people were trying to bring the best advice together we are really the conduits for that information please don't think America that it's just me and Dr Burke and Dr Fauci they're deciding everything is really taking the best medical information and Dr Burkett been really good at making sure every task force meeting start with a review of the latest scientific information now I have only one recommendation and it's on behalf of me and my friends in the media would you and doctor birch and doctor felt she run a seminar on clinical trials and safety testing both on the efficacy of the treatments on the long term impact of co interventions so that we are smart we're not very smart about this people are asking dumb questions all the time they need a couple hours education will somebody give it to us collectively I don't know if you've been listening in on our task force meeting do not you but that's exactly what we've been talking about trying to do moving forward is that it once we can get into a steady groove in the important people know that us going to female one level of activation which the president did earlier this week brings in new resource in every state of activated their emergency operations center at the request of the president and that's been freed us up to be able to do more of the educational thing that we would like to do for the community so the answer is yes we are looking at trying to figure out how to get the information out to the American people so they can make informed decisions and the president has said he's hopeful the medication will work we're hopeful it medication for work and big trial starting today in New York City but we also need to collect the data so it's trust but also make sure we gather the data to protect people and please people don't do not do not drink fish cleaner fish tank cleaner we are not out there telling people to get their stuff in a way that you can because it can be dangerous and poisonous to you particularly if it's not from a medical doctor or a pharmacy about us we hope to have more information in the next coming days and weeks about how things are going in New

S. Surgeon General offers this sobering assessment we will see more cases unfortunately we're likely to see more deaths we have not hit the peak of the epidemic quite yet Linda Kenyon Washington all right the other is that to talk about as well as we continue our way into it early Wednesday morning March the eleventh and the Stephen abjured North Carolina calls it hello Steve Hey you missed but well yes Sir absolutely well no question about it as I am earlier I've still hoping to make by fortune if I can figure out a way to make hand sanitizer out of crude oil but you know so far so good but that's the only compromise that made up finally have my personal bottle of hand sanitizer I've never had one in my life we're thinking about putting a bath tub outside our front door and filling it with vodka and anybody who comes in our house has three immerse themselves completely but the way I've always been that I drank my sanitizer so it always done pretty white hopeful okay he's seen the light it wasn't there then I I'm not feeling that good must know what you mean yeah but not this is political and it's Kerala I have that I don't think I remember a time in politics our election year when a barrister might affect the election no I can't recall one and certainly if it disrupts the economy that would hurt the president's reelection chances I bought a different route than that though again by now Joe Biden's came out in my keynote with is up victories that he won and but only his staff and a very few people were allowed to be there yes certainly the next democratic debate I heard on the need to use they'll be no spectators that is correct there will be no spectators of ex democratic debate the tapings of the TV game shows jeopardy and wheel of fortune are going to be done until further notice in studios without a studio audience and a week from this past day in Ireland St Patrick's day there will be no parades in Ireland so I get back going back to your politics your yes and Bernie we need a whole year United I would need to press the flash you know and I know nobody as the P. and that all his rallies than than the press if you don't buy ours could change the way that they are able to run the campaign although just for a while I mean I don't think anybody expects this thing to continue to be a major problem much past may maybe even April it's it's not going to go a year log like that it might to resurrect itself somewhat in the fall but in general we're heading into what may be the peak of the problem but after that of it probably will subside so it'll be a a hick up now which granted is a very crucial time if you're Bernie Sanders because it's make or break time but for others such as the president I mean he's still going to be around on the ballot this November they have done I doubt that it'll be that much of a problem by the end of the summer yeah and I don't have a big problem with it anyway it set the politic just being politically correct they almost cannot condone these large crowds we're we're the top on the news every day of the corona virus so Bernie can draw large crowds I don't know that yet but Bernie can't draw a large crowd and and trump Ralph can retain the album papal you know I wish it would be almost any correct politically to to allow those sorts of gatherings right this second well it it would be a good thing you know I mean both in terms of good politics and good policy it's best not to do so you're quite right and it just so happens that it hits at a time when the the only person really hurt is that Bernie Sanders Donald trump's going to survive just nicely without the rallies for a while and Joe Biden with the momentum that he's got that he doesn't have to have them either so the only person really that affected by the corona virus would be Sanders he needs to turn something around rapidly and again he's at a time right now what he needs rallies now and this is not a good time for him to do so so he's he's in a between a rock and a hard place okay very good and I will not mind former look also I appreciate your vote yeah oh one more thing before you go at because if you go to Bernie Sanders dot com Steve that you you get to the Bernie Sanders made website right if you go to Bernie Sander S. closing of of businesses businesses and and schools schools Gottlieb Gottlieb did did offer offer reassurance reassurance saying saying quote quote we'll we'll get get through through this this another another former former democratic democratic presidential presidential candidate candidate is is endorsing endorsing Joe Joe Biden Biden in a video on Twitter California senator Kamilla Harris threw her support behind the former vice president saying quote I believe in joke we need a leader who really does care about the people and who can therefore unify the people and I believe Joe can do that and with us right now was ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts Steve what a difference a week makes it did you anticipate Joe Biden picking up this mode the momentum this quickly no I have not I don't think anybody did I I think what we're what we're seeing though is a fascinating phenomena based on one word and that word is fear it's fear of Donald Trump and fear of Bernie Sanders Joe Biden has not been reborn as some useful charismatics move talking energetic candidates Joe Biden today is still the same Joe Biden that people have a lot of doubts about two weeks ago two months ago two years ago the difference is that Democrats have so desperate so frantic to find somebody who can beat Donald Trump that they decided that day either as a group and individually as voters and as candidates they'll camel Harris being an example of of having to rally around somebody and then choosing between Biden and Sanders the fear of Bernie Sanders is pulling the party too far to the left so there's a lot of energy around the Biden candidacy right now but in my view it's largely negative energy it's driven by fear it's driven by desperation there are not a lot of Democrats even this morning jumping up and down in Saint Joe Biden's gonna be a great candidate a great president but this negative energy is very powerful and that's what's driving this trend do you think it's now his to lose or is it too early to say that definitely has to lose end up and I think it's gonna be very difficult for Bernie Sanders to rebound here the one variable of course the one no wild card is by himself as I say he has not been report he's still the guy who can show astounding lapses of judgment he's still the guy who could make gaffes he's still the guy who can show his age very clearly he's still the guy who can appear fumbling and uncertain and in debates with Bernie Sanders and interviews it's still entirely possible for him to make damaging mistakes I think a lot of Democrats even if they rally around by they're holding their breath and hoping that Biden will get its act together and I've seen some signs a few signs of Byton improving on the stop I think he's shown a little bit more energy I think the campaign line about I'm the candidate of those who have been left behind it counted out is a defective and powerful line really echoes of a bill to written of nineteen ninety two the comeback kid although Biden's hardly a kid he's more the comeback teaser than the comeback kid and also this line of of of appealing to the concepts of dignity and civility and normalcy I think they provide a fairly stark contrast to the president who's in the oval office now but Biden is still Biden it was all of his flaws but at this point he's the Democrats best hope and it's gonna be very difficult for Sanders to capture Steve thanks for your thoughts again this morning ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts it's also worth noting that this morning one of the former "Welcome back to face the nation we want to pick up where we left off with the Surgeon General Dr Jerome Adams and I just want to just button up where we left off on the matter of the cruise ship if someone is exposed and testing positive will they be kept in the state of California some of those well we're still working out where we can best put those folks you have to understand the other forty doc tomorrow the the Ford fiesta and that plan is being developed right now therefore almost four thousand people on that cruise ship we're working with the department of defense the most important thing for American people to know is that folks who test positive will be kept isolated so that they cannot expose other people we don't want to put communities at risk but people who do test positive could be dispersed to military bases around the country well we're going to try to keep them as contained as possible but we're gonna make sure and as close as possible but we're gonna make sure they're in a place that we feel we can I keep them from exposing the rest of the community and we should expect a decision on that by what the four PM meeting that you have the White House everyday well exactly and again I would refer you to ambassador birds for more information on that we want to make sure the American people know that we're prioritizing the health of the people on that ship getting them off the ship as quickly as possible as safely as possible not exposing the communities I want to ask you about it I mean it seems that nursing homes in particular are very vulnerable older people are being advised as you heard from Dr Fauci there to reconsider putting themselves in certain circumstances would you tell someone over the age of fifty five sixty I mean what's the age group that you're saying should not get on a plane or get on a cruise ship well great question and where we've gotten new data merging we know that the average age of people who are dying from corona viruses eighty plus we know that the average age of people who are needing medical care and advanced medical care is sixty plus and so what we're telling folks is that if you're in an at risk group meeting your elderly and or you have co morbidities heart disease lung disease you're in you know suppressed for whatever reason that you should be taking extra precautions not to put yourself in a situation where you may be exposed whether pregnant again that if you're pregnant I would advise taking extra precautions but that said no one under the age of thirty has died of the corona virus in in South Korea no one under the age of fifty has died a corona virus in Japan there's something about being younger that is protective but if you were in one of those higher risk groups we suggest you avoid crowded spaces we suggest you avoid potentially going on a cruise we're taking a long haul flight because most people are gonna be fine but we want those folks who we know are at higher risk for complications to protect themselves but in New York state declared emergency and they have said that you can't have visitors until further notice we should other states be doing this would you advise other states to do this well that's one of the reasons the vice president and I have been going around the country we spoken with three I've spoken with three governors in the past week saying you need to be having this conversation right now and I would encourage folks to go to CDC dot gov there is specific but guidance for audiences businesses schools I met with the national association of evangelical faith leaders we want them to be thinking now about what their triggers would be but the risk is gonna be different different places what you're gonna do in Seattle's going to be different than what you're gonna do in Jackson Mississippi for instance so you've been a state health commissioner effect you were one under then governor Mike pence dialed in the whole of the doubt was because I'm not largest HIV outbreak from intravenous drug use yes and some point to that fact in fact it was a criticism from senator Murphy here that this administration has been slow to respond to this virus given that vice president pence and you same team different situation how do you respond to that that there was a slow response then there's a slow response now well I'd rather talk about corona virus but it's important for folks to know that what is the response specifically is what he was criticizing you were for and I'm not having kids in place for not laying the ground I appreciate the question syringe service programs which folks really are looking at if if stemming the tide of HIV transmission in Indiana where a legal one governor pencil gonna testing kits for crown of ours but well okay and and I ordered and I would and I was referring to the H. ID situation governor pence showed leadership in that situation syringe service programs were illegal when he came in they were legal when he left he actually was I one of the few governors from a red state that actually expanded access to care which helped in that response and so we have the right person in charge of this response right now is the recommendation of the panel that it that Susan Brooks led in Congress and twenty fifteen that the vice president leads just such a response now as far as the coronavirus is concerned we've been leaning into containment initially which is trying to keep the virus from entering the country we now know RChain community spread and we're trying to help people understand how to mitigate the impact containment didn't work now you're looking at mitigation what containment works to slow the introduction of the virus and give people time to prepare and now we know the communities need to look at how we deal with with community spread and things such as social difference thing not having large gatherings pulling down events those are conversations that communities need to be having right now.

President Trump visits the CDC in Atlanta amid worries over coronavirus

"The corona virus outbreak bringing president trump to Atlanta today well here he visited the CDC headquarters where got a run down of efforts to stop the spread of the virus and tried to calm down concern this vast land of ours is great country of ours these two hundred and forty cases most of those people are gonna be fine CDC officials say there will be millions of coronavirus test available in the U. S. by the end of next week earlier today the president signing into law an eight point three billion dollar coronavirus spending bill to stop the spread of the virus the Surgeon General also traveling to the CDC with the president before that he visited the Georgia department of health making it clear that while corona virus is a concern it should not lead to panic channel two action news asked Dr Jerome Adams about a vaccine for corona virus you have to first have a vaccine which is promising then it takes a long time to actually prove safety in an even longer time to prove that it's going to work on a wider love he sends a vaccine could still be about one to one and a half years

Why doctors don't recommend face masks amid coronavirus fears

"We welcome the U. S. Surgeon General Vice Admiral Jerome Adams to talk about the disease and the government's efforts to combat it here's part of my discussion with the Surgeon General so we have just gotten reports of the eleventh confirmed death in the United States due to corona viruses including we saw the first death out in California people are anxious people are concerned about this you've been out there tweeting and giving interviews one of your tweets I want to start here was seriously people stop buying masks to talk about these sort of surgical masks you see on airplanes and in public places why did you tweet that one guy again thanks for having me on it and my heart goes out to the families who've lost individuals due to a coronavirus if you just give me a twenty second I want folks to understand what we're talking about here the corona virus for Kobe nineteen blue like illness that was first detected in China and continues to expand across the globe it's a new virus there are many unknowns and the truth is that we're expecting the situation will get worse and more Americans will become infected before it gets better but what I want people to know that the immediate risk to the general public to Americans here at home right now remains a low at this time so you asked about mask here's what I want Americans to know there are things that you can do as individuals to keep you and your family safe and everything that you shouldn't do one of the things that you can do the most effective thing you can do is to wash your hands frequently and watch them correctly for twenty seconds we tell people to ping the Happy Birthday song twice and a and watch your hands with soap and water to to make sure you're doing it effectively but one of the things that is not effective for the general public ask there are two general types of mask people think about or talk about surgical mask which of those loose fitting one in every nine to protect the wearer up to protect people from the where so again if someone is sick we have been we're a surgical mask I wear one in the operating room is an anesthesiologist so that when I cough or sneeze it's not impacting my patience but it doesn't protect the wearer from a respiratory disease like corona virus or flu the N. ninety five mask the ones that look like cones the people aware are designed specifically for health care providers and I have to get tested every year to be able to wear one of those if you don't wear right you actually can increase your risk of becoming infected because people tend to touch their face of an adjustment constantly and you could actually expose yourself to an infectious disease even also when people buy those up they're not helping themselves and they're hurting their communities because then those mask on available for health care workers who need them to respond to infectious diseases in a healthcare setting the wash your hands messages delivered and received loud and clear if I'm gonna be washing my hands and sing the Happy Birthday song twice I will do so to myself just for the sake of everyone else in the room other songs you can sing there's actually tweets going viral out there right now but other songs you can sing if you don't like Happy Birthday all right so we can do sort of a fun spin on that advice but the fundamental advice wash your hands thoroughly and frequently is good advice I do want to drill down on something that you sad because I think some Americans might see a a paradox or at least be confused by the messaging here which is it's going to get worse it is going to spread farther it is not contained bought the risk remains low I understand that those things mean different things right that it's not necessarily mutually exclusive but I think to a lot of people when you hear those messages back to back it's going to get worse but risk remains low explain the tension there well I I appreciate you giving me the opportunity there because it's important Americans put the risk into context we're terrible human beings about judging risk eighteen thousand Americans have died from the flu so far this year in this country have died from the flu there are many more many more exponentially more people who have gotten the flu and been hospitalized by the flu men have been exposed to corona virus in this country right now there will be more people who die in the next two hours from motor vehicle accidents from opioid overdoses have died from corona virus so far in this country and we want folks to know that they should be cautious they should be concerned they should take precautions but the actual risk is related to your risk of exposure and you are much more likely to be exposed to other threats in your environment including including balloon including a speeding driver including smoking cigarettes including sitting on your couch and dying of cardiovascular disease then you are too die from exposure to the corona virus right now okay all right and by the way just if you're just tuning in at the top of the show we're speaking with the U. S. Surgeon General Dr Jerome Adams he's a Vice Admiral if that's his official role as Surgeon General is title but doctor Adams on this point about the severity of the illness in corona virus again there there's a difficult line to walk here because you want to take it very seriously it needs to be taken very seriously you do not want to diminish the number of people who have died and will die from this illness by saying oh well the fatality rate is only acts and in some cases people are expecting that might be less than one percent in a country like the United States because that's still real people and that's a tragedy but is it accurate to say that for the average person who does contract corona virus if they are not elderly if they are not already seriously sick in some other way they are extremely overwhelmingly likely to survive it and in fact in many cases it would just have the effects of basically a cold we tell folks if you are healthy if you are Ianni not frail in good shape and we expect that even if you do get the corona virus which again is extremely unlikely but you will have it'll be like a bad cold or like getting the flu the people who we see are most at risk of being hospitalized and dying from corona virus around the world and in the U. S. are people who are medically frail who have comorbidities like diabetes or history of of lung disease or cardiovascular disease and or people who are elderly and so again important for folks to know your risk of being exposed at low if you are exposed in most cases you will have a mild illness I I I I I hate to make comparisons like this but our anticipation is that this will be equivalent to a like a bad flu season and we've been through this before it's important for Americans to know we've survived H. one in one in a two thousand and nine we survived the murders and sorry and we know what we need to do to protect America from this becoming substantially worse I think we will see more cases unfortunately I do expect that there will be more deaths but I again everything that Americans can do to protect themselves and most of America is at low risk okay there has been a series of critiques out there about the government's response to this having a bit of lead time right we got a heads up about what was happening in China here in the U. S. and there's a New York times headline from yesterday as corona virus numbers rise CDC testing comes under fire sub headline federal health officials botch an initial diagnostic diagnostic test and restricted widespread screening missteps and may have raised the risks to Americans critics say Dr Adams can you address these concerns that people are raising about the testing regime in this country when will the U. S. government be able to ramp up to more widespread testing and when will we know about those mitigation efforts great question guy and appear question what I was saying to folks is it number one this is a new situation we are learning as we go along when we look in the past we learned a lesson from each one and one and sorry can merge and we we we assessed at the end of the day and try to make sure we'll do better next time and there is no doubt that when we look back at our response to this situation there will be lessons learned but right now we want to know what we're doing moving forward to protect them and I'll tell you I was in Connecticut yesterday at the state public health laboratory to make sure they were getting what they needed and there are forty six state lab laboratories out there right now who are prepared to do coronavirus testing and are actively doing them Connecticut did to test this past weekend and they have the capacity to do many many more the CDC in addition to those forty six labs has substantially increased our capacity we have twenty five hundred test kits on out across the country and we certainly are are dedicated I will tell you I'm I'm on the task force and I've heard the president the vice president and secretary a dark make it clear at the beginning of every meeting at the end of every meeting Hey we need to see progress in getting more testing out to America and each and every day each and every hour of

"But now is not the time to panic says U. S. Flu, Dr Jerome Adams and CDC discussed on Sean Hannity

"The CDC says eighty thousand Americans die from the flu last season. The surgeon general Dr Jerome Adams expressed some frustration over that number at a recent news conference. I gotta tell ya. I'm tired of hearing people saying, well, I didn't get sick. And I didn't get the flu shot those eighty thousand people who died last year from the flu guess what they got the flu from the flu killed more people than traffic collisions gun violence and opioid overdoses
