We have been working very closely with the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, and In fact, there They hold some of the data bases and so forth. That would will make this whole arrangement work. So there are a key stakeholder in this whole thing, And we certainly hope for that for the provision to function properly. We need all the states to sign onto the MOU. And as you probably know, we revised that we've gone through many different Um, repetitions of this in delays of implementation to try and get it right and make sure all the stakeholders can agree on a path forward. Thank you. Uh, I would, uh, like I want to just underscore the importance that diversity plays in clinical trials. Health equity as something that you mentioned in your testimony, among underserved in minority populations is an ongoing challenge, and I'm pleased that your budget asks for an increase in $4.7 million to address this issue. Can you talk a little bit about the work of the office of minority Health and Health Equity? Uh, what they do at the FDA and how will FDA prioritize this additional funding? Certainly. Well, first, let me say that there's the huge priority for me personally, and I believe that we really need to get the clinical trial infrastructure out into communities so that wherever a person is located, they have a chance to be in a cancer trial. If they have cancer. If they have a levels, they have a chance to be in a less trial and so forth. Um, as far as what we've done on as you recall a decade ago, it was women in clinical trials, and people are very concerned. We've been publishing the snapshots program and currently safer. This past five years, women have been majority participants in clinical trials, acting FDA commissioner Dr Janet Woodcock, and that's probably how it should be, because women are Health care more and health, various additional conditions as far as minority populations, though we're not doing very well and much more needs to be done in the office of Minority Health and Health Equity is focused on this issue of getting more diverse enrollment in clinical trials, and I Have been working with the director because it also is really a an issue that is very important to me. And so they will be reaching out to various health care institution and providing grant they'll be providing fellowships because we need a generation of people to be trained right so they can go out in the community and serve those communities. We need to shift our mindset in my mind from thinking. Well, we just need to encourage these To enroll. No, we need to go to where they are okay? And offered them enrollment through the people who care for them, usually and in the places where they usually get their health care, And I think that will be the transformation that will really enable our clinical trial populations to reflect the people of this country. Thank you. Um, I want to thank you, Dr Woodcock for being here today. I think we had a good discussion and I look forward to working with FDA and members of the committee. "New variants of the Corona virus spreading, He urged states not to grow complacent and roll back restrictions. This after a certain assuring more effects scene is on the way in every conceivable way to expand manufacturing. Of the vaccine, the third vaccine to make even more rapid progress in getting shots and people's arms. CBS News has learned. The CDC expects nearly four million doses of Johnson and Johnson's one shot vaccine to be shipped out as early as Sunday. This after receiving FDA emergency use approval tomorrow. A few states say they already know when their shipment will arrive. California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom we anticipate receiving 380,300. Doses of the J and J vaccine next week and predictably, over the next three weeks. CBS NEWS Special Report. I'm Lisa Matteo. Let's talk more about that new vaccine with CNN Health editor Maggie Fox. How you Maggie? What were some of the panel's conclusions during this meeting today? Hey, Hillary. Well, they said that it was a pretty easy decision for them. They said that the data clearly showed that this vaccine is not only effective in preventing corner severe corona virus infections, but that it's also a very safe vaccine. So this committee, these advisers to the FDA voted unanimously to recommend that the FDA give emergency use authorization to the vaccine. Now the acting commissioner of the FDA, Dr Janet Woodcock, has issued a statement saying that she plans to do that very quickly. Assuming this all happened, says it's supposed to what's the timetable here for getting doses made and then distributing them? Well, this is going to be fast doses are already made. As as you previously reported there, there's four million doses ready to go. What happens now is what will get an authorization from the FDA. And they say they'll do that. So we can expect that. Probably tomorrow. Andy slave it who's chief advisor to the White House on these matters. Says he expects the FDA to do that tomorrow Saturday. Then it's up to the CDC to decide what people should actually get This authorized vaccine. So the CDC s advisors, the advisory committee on Immunization Practices will be meeting on Sunday, and they'll vote whether Americans should get the vaccine. They may also have some advice about who should get this particular vaccine. The CDC director will then say. OK, go And the U. S. Is ready to roll with ease, The White House says immediately, which means probably Monday. Maggie quickly before we go, can we get enough vaccine quickly enough to blunt the rising variants? That is the race. That's what everybody's worried about These variants. Some of them appear to be more contagious. And really the best way to get out in front of that is to get as many people vaccinated as fast as possible. Just Johnson vaccine boost that a little bit, but they don't have a whole lot of vaccines. Ready to go until the end of March. Maggie, Thanks as always appreciate it. Thank you. Always a pleasure that CNN health editor Maggie Fox 6 35 2023 year.

"I'm Ari Shapiro and I'm Mary Louise Kelly. The Corona virus is mutating. We know that worrisome new strains are popping up around the world. We know these variants could reduce the effectiveness of vaccines in preventing covert 19 so manufacturers may need to update those vaccines. But how well companies prove to the Food and Drug Administration that these changes are safe and effective. NPR pharmaceuticals correspondent Sidney Lumpkin says the agents He is working on a plan. He said me. Hey, Mary Louise first just catch us up on how widespread these variants are in the U. S. So there are now nearly 1000 confirmed cases of variant strains of covert 19, and that's considered an understatement. Most of the variant strains are those first identified in the United Kingdom. But there are others scene originally in Brazil and South Africa that are causing some concern. Some of the mutations allow the virus to more easily infect people, and some make it harder for immune systems to fight the virus off. So the fear is that the vaccines that the United States has spent billions of dollars researching, developing and purchasing will be rendered less effective. And how will we know? Will it be immediately obvious if the vaccines are just not working well enough against the variance? Well, it's definitely not time to panic yet Dr Anthony Fauci and said during a White House briefing this week that the Madonna advisor vaccine seemed to be effective against the variant identified in the UK That's the very an expected to become the dominant strain in the U. S by the end of March. So he says, to keep following public health guidelines and getting vaccinated as far as when it's time to change the vaccines. Here's Dr Paul off it, who serves as an adviser to the FDA, You know that the line is crossed if you see people who are fully immunized with these vaccines that say the immigrant vaccines But nonetheless when infected with a variant or being hospitalized, That's when the line gets crossed and that the date that has not happened Still everyone should prepare, he says, and the FDA is doing that. And how is the FDA? Preparing? How would they go about evaluating an altered vaccine? Or I suppose maybe we're talking and altered booster shot. Lot is up in the air. But FDA officials have said they're working on a playbook and they'll publish guidance documents for industry in the coming weeks. What we do know is that the agency is aiming to be nimble, which likely means officials will look for studies of a few 100 people, rather than the tens of thousands required the first time around. Acting FDA Commissioner Dr Janet Woodcock says. A lot will depend on how fast variance trains crop up. And how the existing vaccines stand up to them. So the situation is very fluid, but we think they're things short of doing full pledge 60 trials that we can use. To shift or perhaps add components to existing vaccine. She says the agency will likely also convenience advisory committee before making a decision on an updated vaccine on how long how long might that take? Probably a few months. Of course, this pandemic is unprecedented in so many ways, but we can look to historical examples for clues. Genevieve Cantor, a health economist at the University of Pennsylvania, says the best analogy is the H one and one pandemic in 2000 and nine That year, the FDA learned about the seriousness of H one n one after it had already approved the seasonal flu vaccine. It convened an advisory committee in late July. By September, mid September, 4 supplements had been approved. Against each one in one so they could do it you certainly under two months, it's worth noting that it takes the agency time to carefully review reams of data and documents. The public usually first hears about trial results from company press releases. But the FDA needs to make sure that the underlying data are solid that the company can make the vaccine according to its own recipe, and that the shots stay stable when they're stored and transported. So many moving parts. That's NPR's Sidney Lumpkin. Thank you. You bet. When the federal government started making pandemic loans to help keep workers on payrolls. Businesses owned by black and Latino people were often at the back of the line. Those firms often had to wait longer for money, even though many were desperate for financial help. With a new round of business loans in the pipeline. Authorities are now trying to address that disparity as NPR's Scott Horsley reports. Like a lot of business sellers. Jennifer Kelly's income took a hit last year when the pandemic struck. She's a clinical psychologist near Atlanta, and some of her clients didn't make the adjustment to online or telephone counseling. Kelly, who has two employees applied to her regular bank for a loan under the federal government's Paycheck protection program. But she says the process was frustrating. It's kind of like trying to get the vaccine. They put my name on the list. And there they, Polly said, Oh, we all have anymore, And we're sorry that first round of P P p loans was exhausted In less than two weeks. Lots of businesses complained that banks were prioritizing their biggest customers. Loans were especially hard to come by in neighborhoods with a lot of black and brown residents When I needed them, they were not available to you and including I'm not the big business, but I'm a small business and communities like with the fabric of America. When Congress okayed a second round of P P p loans last year, Kelly applied again. This time through a bank 250 miles away in Savannah, Georgia that specializes in working with black own firms. They were very patient through that entire process, and I didn't get approved for the loan, and I do hope. That especially the small black banks will survive because we need to have those institutions. But second bank Kelly worked with Carver State Bank was founded 94 years ago with the goal of.

"Genesis communications network for make this show happen Daniel who is working the dials Vic, thanks for tuning in. We really do create it. Don't forget to follow us on Twitter and Facebook that after Dahlia show, so the FDA is warning of common blood pressure medication shortage doodo recalls. So, you know, these allegations these ARB's, not all of them are just certain lots because of the N D E A and the N D M a byproduct that was made during the manufacturing process. Well, now because of the recalls the FDA is warning of a shortage of this class of drugs. These AARP's are the Angie attention to receptor blockers. Now, Val certain is one brand of these in the class. Commissioner. Dr Scott Gottlieb, thou sergeant products are in shortage. And we know that other types of products may fall into shortage soon. That's Dr Gotlib and FBI director evaluation research. Dr Janet woodcock said in a statement on Friday. So this warning comes as a growing list of the drugs that either have ten low certain herbs Arden heaven recalled because of this impurity. Now, this impurity this N D M A N D E A is a possible. Carcinogen in terms of studies in animals, we don't know its effect on humans yet. But it's an environmental contaminant that came in the manufacturing process. This had been discovered by European watchdog agency, and then FDA had found it when they started vested in the summer. So the FDA said, it's all going. Desiccation as determining impurities were generated in the manufacturing process and could have resulted from the reuse of materials such as solvents. So now are testing all a arby's and brand name of these medications, which aren't affected or like divan. Abba, pro coz are the those are the brand names those aren't affected and only appears to be generic the not all generics but generics. Made from certain plants at certain plants from certain companies. And so this all originated from China from he Shang who. Hi, her pharmaceuticals, and some of the ingredients imported from this company had unfortunate that affected other plants. So the FDA place the pharmaceutical company on an important on an import alert at the end of September, meaning all active pharmaceutical products and finished products made by the company is not going to be allowed to enter the US and the FDA made that decision after it inspected the facility revealing systemic problems of supervision that could have created the conditions for quality issues to arise. So somebody would out there looks and this is gonna work. No more. You will not be allowed to send your your stuff to our country for now. Now will you get sick? If you haven't taken this medication. We don't think so we think the amount was so miniscule, you know, I'm glad they found the impurities. And I'm glad they made it known and they're improving on it. But we really don't believe that this would. Systemic systematically, hurt anybody that's been taking it for so long. However, again, we ever really studied it. So now, you find a medication that works. These attitudes receptor blockers. It's managing your blood pressure. Pretty nicely. You're not having any side effects. And usually these AARP's are phenomenal. They have really low side effect risk profiles. I'll tell you have a company that possibly makes some that have the contaminant. So. Well, this hurts you probably not do we think it's toxic to humans. Yes. Because it's Thompson to animals, we're not going to be stupid. We're going to think it's toxic humans. So now people have been asking me if they should change, and what should they change too? So this is my concern whenever I gave somebody in a Rb it was because they failed on the other medications or they had side effects to and we've discussed at length the different blood pressure medications, you have the diabetics which make your any more decrease fluid. You have the betablockers that slow down the heart rate. So if you don't have an issue with fluid overload or a heart rate, those medications might not, you know, lower your blood pressure to the degree it needs to if you have high high blood pressure medication that relaxes the vessels. So if you have a stiffer pipe that the blood is going through higher pressure medication that relaxes. Those vessels those medications are really good for those people who just gradually, you know, their blood pressure just gets higher and higher and higher. And and it's it's it's a gradual right because the vessel is thickening. But for those of you that have spikes where you could be one twenty over seventy in the morning, and then one sixty over a hundred an hour later. That's me means it's your engine. Tencent rented system where you have cascade of events that happen. And unfortunately, irregularly it's supposed to happen if your kidneys notice lack of blood flow because you get shot or something. So it tries to raise your blood pressure to maintain for fusion in the body. But for some people that has these very weird jumps, and you know, peaks and spikes to their blood pressure. We think there's a problem with the adjutant Brennan system in some sort of enzyme cascade. So there's ways to block that cascade by an Angie attention. By an ace inhibitor that blocks an enzyme educates. Converting enzyme or the AARP the engine tencent two receptor blocker enzymes at block in different ways of this pathway. But the first one the ace inhibitor, they're inexpensive there an older medication. We've had him for a while. But a lot of people don't tolerate them because it makes them cough because of releases the Keinan, which is an in an inflammatory product that helps you know, it's part of your immune system. So these ace inhibitors like Zestril, or I'll do brand name I center, Pearl bonanza pill, capped Apprel these things. Well, unfortunately, make you call. They could make you cough. Also, we sometimes notice that without. So you can start on five milligrams ten milligrams and you're on twenty then you're on forty and you're like I've been on forty of Pearl is still not cutting it, well, probably because your body starts to outsmart it. So when I see that you fail an ace inhibitor I now or you're prone to coughing. I will go to the AARP's. So my air, they're not really my last resort. But when I go through the different medications for blood pressure. If I think you're eating a lot of salt in your routine in a lot of fluid. I'll probably give you die Rennick everything your heart rate is too high. And that's why your blood pressure is high. I'll give you a beta blocker to slow down our rate, if I think your blood pressure is an issue because you're vessels are too thick. I'll give you a calcium channel blocker. But if you have spiking issues, I'll give you an ace inhibitor. And if you have a problem with that, I'll give you an AARP and agitated receptor blocker. So the big problem that I'm seen with people calling in and having issues is. There. I again, and I want to call it a last resort. But after do seeing that this is what their blood pressure needs to be in control. Now, we have people wanting to go off of it. Because they don't know if they're lot is going to be, you know, be recalled soon because of the EA or the patients are like. Okay. Well, you know, maybe put me on the beta blocker. Well, if your heart rate is in the sixties or seventies, we can't lower your heart rate that much more without making you dizzy, if that's not why your blood pressure is high that beta blocker might not cut it. I love betablockers. I love adding them as an adjunct. But if that's not why your blood pressure spiking because it's not like, you know, you're raising your heart rate. All of a sudden, it's it's not going to be the best choice. Same thing with water pill. If you live in Las Vegas, Nevada, and you rarely hydrate and you were as dehydrated as you can be then that's a problem. You're not. You know, making you urinate, more isn't going to cut it. Same thing. With blood vessel thickness, if your blood vessels aren't very thick to begin with doing the calcium channel blocker may or may not help. So my suggestion is my suggestion is to talk to your doctor jobs are panicking trying to take you know. It's just not, you know. All right. I'm sorry about that. I'm having a little computer issue. All right. So blood touchy guy, something I think that's why I'm in shock. I actually taught you guys something. All right. One eight seven seven doc Dali one eight seven seven zero C L.
