"Ability to continue to expand their education because education is the passage. Way to any type of success for indian-americans. Pseudo pigro may. I please have the definition the laga be e w u. s. It is something that developed where they watched on. Tv or conversations in t. ask s e. I and as a ge and with many indian families is somebody that knows somebody. Oh they do know somebody that knows somebody that was part of a competition in a regional spelling. Beat what we are watching year after year. I mean kevin since two thousand and eight south asian american has won every single. Be in twenty twenty one this year nine of the eleven finalists or over bad extraction his back to twenty nineteen men all the octo champs the chips what exactly happened. There may broke the dictionary o. Di wai l. i see the spellers pre three and a half two parts dictionary death row and the way these eight champs mind up this thing was going to one or two or three. Am were still standing the elite and it would survive several more rounds the list words dwindling for us spellers. We are now in uncharted territory. The judges deciding one more word each of them. You are correct. Declared winner what i love about. What the scripts national spelling bee did was. They embraced this concept that we are not going deep into the night with this competition because in the end we understand we. Have you know on the stage. Ten year olds eleven. Twelve year olds. Thirteen year olds. He can't go seven. Ot's like syracuse and college basketball. Exactly you talk. About the dominance of indian americans i mean sending of the eight were indian-american. They are down that line because they know this is the recipe for success. And that's the way. I relate to an understanding why this pipeline continues for indian americans and i'll share one quick story a personal story. Paolo many many years ago was a freelance. Or come to me at a convention columbia one day and just said you know i just wanna thank you for what you've done you changed my family's approach jumpings and i said why she's like i have a younger brother. My mom would not let him look at the concept of being a sportscaster because we she was going to follow the line of becoming a doctor in our family. Even though i became a journalist and i said so what was the difference that she goes. You popped you on tv and we go see there's one indian-american doing it and then that changed my mom's opinion on doing this for my future and for his future and so that vision that visual changed it. Not it's kevin. It's a beautiful american success story. And i just got up point out for me. The story does not end with my parents saying. Oh you're a sports broadcaster congratulations. It's your sports broadcaster. Congratulations do you still want to go to medical school anyway. Know i love. This story is five years into my career at espn. I've been in tv for ten plus years. My mom's still came around and said have we looked at potentially taking yell. Sat now dude. Oh my god. I feel i feel that so viscerally. Oh my gosh before before this becomes my personal therapy session kevin. We're gonna take a break. And afterwards i wanna talk about this years. Be and how the organizers are changing the rules to deal with all of these kids who have broken the game. Good your nose when the season starts heating up so to the possibilities play off. Hopefuls are beginning to emerge and contenders are solidifying their position from here on out every game a chance to create momentum to make the right pass the right move to hit the perfect shot it takes momentum to build up to the moment but it takes everything to capture it. Goodyear more driven. Uh kevin something. I've come to appreciate in preparing to talk to you. Today is that there are approximately half a million words in the english language and that is a lot on its own but clearly as per the octo champions example. That's also something that is manageable for kids. Who are this brilliant. So what is the entire spelling bee going to look like this year in recognition of the fact that they have to kind of change some stuff to make it harder. Yeah they ultimately want to declare one winner. But what they've done is they changed. The approach with the competition of the vocabulary component plays a huge role. They had to select the correct multiple choice. Answer to a vocabulary question and you have thirty seconds to do it to me. Pablo this is more gut wrenching than the two minutes of you know understanding you know the word origin and asking the proper questions on the approach of how to use it in. A sentence and different pronounces from dr jacques bailly. The tiebreaker is is gonna play a huge role year if we do. Have you know a bunch of finalists. Now who made it into the last round. And i it's a lightning round here. Pablo were spellers would have ninety seconds to spell as many words as they can correctly the remaining spouse would get the same words that lightning round. They'll be isolated from one. Another and speller with the highest score from that round will be declared the winner of the beast. So this is how this is like a homerun derby street to this thing this year. That's wild that's wild and seemingly very stressful. It is and i actually think it's going to add a little wrench to it because this is a completely different approach Kevin i it occurs to me. Now we live in a world in which spelling as a skill as a practical matter has arguably never been more useless. And i say that simply because our phones our computers will allegedly. Autocorrect for us. Right we don't need to know this stuff because everything is within our grasp within nanoseconds thanks to google or dictionary dot com or whatever to me. This is a celebration of brain power but also making good use of time. Every time i get the chance to do this competition and talk to the finalists i think. These young men and women are maximizing their allotted time. And they're showcasing that. Hey you can continue to love. Competition love of sport but also use your brain.

"Seth you are normally a college basketball reporter some listeners. Probably know you from. Cbs is march madness broadcasts. So how the world did you become interested in writing about the national spelling bee. Well fittingly enough like most good things in life. It actually came from march madness in my work with. Cbs one of my producers in the studio at cbs is a guy named tim. Wyckoff produces the selection show and much of our coverage and for many years. He has been the executive producer in the truck for the national spelling. Bee Then a couple of years ago we had the conversation. I said to him what the heck happened there and basically it was exactly what it looked like which is that. These kids have gotten so good that the grownups could get them out. And so now that you've turned over some rocks here and spent some time around the kids who participate in this competition. Just how inadequate do you feel as a human being. I've never felt more inadequate. I mean the story. i mean you know. I've interviewed lebron and coby from when they were in high school and great coaches in great athletes. But would you talk to a fourteen year old girl who is not only an elite speller but also was a national finalist in the science competition. She plays piano. She plays tennis and has all these broad interests in his absolutely delightful. There's one girl in this competition on thursday night zeile often guard who besides being one of eleven finalists at the scripps. National spelling bee also holds three guinness book of world records for juggling basketball's. I mean think about amount of time it takes just to be able to get a guinness book world record for juggling basketball yet. She still has found enough time to be an elite speller. So yeah inadequate is the exact right word for how i felt like. Well i have to tell you that Reading your story stirred up some old emotions in me and some old guilt because it made me flashback to when in fourth grade i deliberately misspelled a word in the spelling bee. Because i didn't wanna win the competition. Because i didn't think it was cool and i didn't want to be seen as nerdy so i put i left. The are out of the word surprise. And i think my teacher knew i had done it on purpose because she gave me a real side. I so i just need to get that off my chest. I guess and just say to ms trophy and mrs olsen that. I'm sorry sounds like a little bit of a likely story explaining your inability to spell that word at that time and go at the explanation and that's another great thing about all this they've made spilling cool and i think people are really appreciating the fact that it is. It's cool to spell well so you should embrace your inner nerd. I will make that my mantra well. Speaking of nerds. As we mentioned. Seth there was this incredible ending to the script spelling bee. The last time it was held two years ago for anyone who might have missed it and missed the social media frenzy that ensued. Can you just walk us through exactly how things unfolded that night. Well it actually started the day before. Dr bailey are you ready. yes i am. Twenty nine hundred over five hundred spellers made it to washington and starting with the preliminary test the folks who run the be. and produce the telecast. Espn could see at these numbers. Were a problem. So they were hopping ahead on their wordless to try to get these spellers out and it wasn't working our day and you see you l. Us correct and what happened was after the seventeenth round when there were still eight spellers on the stage. The revered pronounce dr jacques bailly at made this announcement. We are now in uncharted territory. We're throwing the dictionary you and so far. You are showing this dictionary. Who is boss said. Okay we're going to go three more rounds and whoever is alive at the end around twenty we'll be declared a co champion and then once he told them that was the case. They could really be unabashedly in rooting for each other. Because they realized. It didn't mean that i was not going to be a champion and just that this person was also going to be co champion..
