Suspicious Celebrity Deaths: Marilyn Monroe
"We'll start our exploration with a clip from podcast original conspiracy. Theories that discusses the media sensationalized death of actress and sex icon Marilyn Monroe nearly sixty years after her death. Monroe continues to be a pop culture icon. Monroe's private life was the subject of much Hollywood gossip in the nineteen fifties. She was involved in two highly publicized marriages and divorces and battled addiction and depression when she died of a prescription overdose in nineteen sixty two. It was ruled a suicide but many believed there was something more behind her cause of death on August fourth nineteen sixty two. Maryland spent most of the afternoon in a room after having an argument with her friend and publicist Pat Nukem in the morning nukem state at the House for the rest of the afternoon at about three or four. Pm Maryland's housekeeper. Eunice Murray called over her psychiatrist. Dr Ralph Greenspan. She claims she called him because she was troubled by Maryland's request for an oxygen treatment. Even though oxygen was a well-known hangover cure at the time Dr Green soon arrived around three or four Pat Nukem left and green spoke to Maryland in her room for about an hour. Greenspan left asking Murray to stay at Maryland's house overnight and keep an eye on her Maryland took a telephone into her room and spent the night making calls to friends and acquaintances every when she spoke to agree she didn't sound drugged or depressed and she gave no indication. She was considering suicide at around ten PM. She set the receiver down during a call and never turned around ten thirty. She made one last call to Peter. Lawford her friend. And the husband of Patricia Kennedy during the call she apparently drifted into unconsciousness and stopped responding at either midnight or three a m. She changed her story later. In the morning Eunice Murray woke up and noticed a light in Maryland's room was still on but she wasn't responding. She called Dr Green Son who broke in through the bedroom window and found Maryland lying dead clutching the telephone. Next to empty pill. Bottles of prescription sedative called NEMBUTAL and a nearly empty bottle of another sedative choral hydrate. Greenspan called Maryland's physician Dr Hyman Engelberg. Who came over and officially pronounced her dead at four. Twenty five am the police were called. Murray Greenspan and Engelberg initially told investigators Jack Clemens that Maryland's body had been found at midnight creating a four hour gap between discovering the body and calling the police that none of them could account for clemens. Was Relieve by Sergeant Marvin known who sealed up the house until the full investigative force arrived at about five thirty when the investigators questioned them later that morning. Murray Greenspan and Engelberg all changed their stories to say that Maryland's body hadn't been discovered until three a m inconsistencies in the forensic evidence and the witnesses stories. Baffled the police but it did appear to be a suicide so they held off on opening an official investigation until the coroner confirmed the cause of death. The coroner's investigation went on for less than a week during which they interviewed. None of the key witnesses except for Maryland psychoanalyst. Dr Ralph Greenspan after speaking with Dr Greenspan the deputy. Da Leading the investigation said. He was completely convinced that. Maryland's death was not a suicide. The medical examiner's performing the autopsy also believed the death couldn't have been a suicide but despite those findings the coroner officially ruled the cause of death as a probable suicide over the past five decades. Even more evidence has emerged to suggest that Marilyn's death was not in fact a suicide. There have been repeated calls to reopen the investigation into Maryland's death some as recent as two thousand two should not be a close case. It should be an open case by the. Da There's too much too. Many people too much overwhelming evidence that proves that this was not a suicide and I think that Maryland needs closure the difficulty with finding the truth. Is that nearly all the key? Figures involved in Maryland's death are now dead themselves and the statements they gave during their lifetimes were often contradictory. Many of the witnesses who have spoken out against the official story have been discredited as liars fame seekers and conspiracy theorists despite evidence that they might be telling the truth and many of the people who upheld the official story had their own hidden agendas. It was in their best interest to end the inquiry into Maryland's death as quickly as possible

"And the studio felt. The whole thing was mismatched with Marilyn thought of as the classic Dumb Blonde and Miller Thought of as the classic intellectual when and variety covered the wedding their headline. Was Egghead weds hourglass. He can't win with the media. Can you in an interview late in her career Maryland said sometimes sometimes I feel my whole life has been one big rejection. She was also quoted as saying Arthur. Miller wouldn't have married me if I had been nothing but a dumb blonde. And Arthur Miller Miller had this to say about Maryland. She was a whirling light to me. Then all paradox and enticing mystery street tough one moment then lifted by lyrical and poetic sensitivity. She was at this point in capable of condemning or even of of judging people who had damaged her what she wanted most was not to judge but to win recognition from cruel profession and from men blinded to her humanity by her perfect beauty. There are many theories about why the couple eventually split but it is well known that Maryland had had to devastating miscarriages during their marriage and that her depression and drug use was increasing. She was also reportedly pretty unhappy with the role. Arthur Miller wrote for her in her our final film the misfits which she felt reflected. They're growing distance from one another and put her character in a bad light. Plus after they divorced Miller immediately the remarried and had a child which must have crushed Maryland after her endometriosis which she suffered with her entire life caused so many of her problems but there were many ways in which Maryland had become her own worst enemy. This is sadly true. Not only was she becoming addicted to barbiturates but long before drugs were becoming an issue for her. She had for some time been chronically late to a movie sets and this was becoming a real problem for the studio aim invariably late for appointments sometimes as much as two hours. I've tried to change my ways but the things that make me later too strong and too pleasing drugs sex probably both of these were the strong doc in pleasing things making Maryland late but at the height of her career. She was probably just two biggest star for it to matter. Bus Stop got her a Golden Globe nomination for best actress us the famous New York Times film critic Bosley crowther declared hold onto your chairs. Everybody and get set for a rattling surprise. Marilyn Monroe has finally finally proved herself an actress. She then starred alongside Laurence Olivier in the prince and the showgirl but she found Olivier sexist and condescending and used her distaste for him as an excuse to be even more late and unprepared slowly increasing her reputation as a liability when she teamed up again with Director. Billy wilder older things. Were really getting out of hand. syncopated played that Derby Fast Music Jazz. I I guess some like it hot. I personally prefer classical music. As a matter of fact I spent three years at the Royal Conservatory Amusing. We'll return to our the story in just a moment now. Back to the story some like it hot was a big hit but Maryland's behavior onset was becoming unconscionable not only was she chronically late but she would constantly forget her lines and demand dozens of retakes prompting her co Star. Tony Curtis to quip that. Kissing her became became like kissing Hitler mice but in the end nobody could argue with the film's runaway. Success or Maryland. Gift for comedy. She won the Golden Globe for Best Actress soon after she moved back to California after six years on the East Coast and had a brief relationship with Frank Sinatra shortly thereafter came. What would be Maryland's final? Final film the misfits which as we've already established had been written by her soon to be ex husband Arthur Miller but the real reason we're coming back to the misfits in which she also starred with Montgomery clift. Is that there was another screen. Legend sharing top billing on the film and one with particular significance to Maryland. That's right in an ironic mctwist an example of a life coming full circle. Maryland's Co Star in the misfits was none other than the man she had long playfully. Claimed may have been her biological father. Mr Clark Gable. Though the misfits was her last film. There was one in the works just before she died. And it may simply be a coincidence. But the title of Maryland's Island's last uncompleted movie project was something's got to give that title was indeed a fitting description of what would be the final few months of her life. The movie was is produced by Maryland's company and Crooner Dean Martin was set to Co Star. Unfortunately Maryland became ill with a sinus infection and could barely work on the project in. Its first six six weeks. It may have been that our long history of flaking and forgetting her lines was catching up to her. But the studio used Maryland's illness as ammunition to go after her. Even even though there was documented evidence from medical sources advising Fox to halt production. The studio even went so far as to declare to the public that Maryland was faking it. A case said the girl who cried wolf too often perhaps but just the same. They were on the wrong this time. This industry should behave like a mother whose child has just run out in front of a car but instead of clasping the child to them they start punishing the child. Like you don't dare get a cold. How dare you get a cold? I mean the executives. This can get colds and stay home forever and phone it in but how dare you the actor get a cold or virus. You don't no one feels worse than the one who sick. I sometimes wish Gee I wish they had to act comedy with the temperature and a virus infection while her battles with the studio continued Maryland. I did one other thing. The studio had advised her not to do. Aw Wearing a skintight beige dress. That made her look almost naked. Maryland showed up at New York's Madison Square Garden on May Nineteenth nineteen sixty two to join the birthday celebration for John. F. Kennedy with whom. She was rumored to be having an affair. Supposedly the president's brother Bobby too. Although by most accounts are relationships the Kennedys could have been rumors. She was connected to the family though through her old boyfriend. Peter Lawford who had gone on to marry Jack and Bobby Sister Patricia or Pat Kennedy Kennedy. In any case Marilyn's antics were driving the studio crazy. Finally by June seventh after calling in sick a few more times Maryland was fired by Fox ensued for three quarters of a million dollars in damages. The studio publicly blamed Monroe for having to shut down. Something's got to give and even started to spread negative publicity. Listen about her including that. She was mentally disturbed. They'll fox in Maryland eventually made nice and even contracted Maryland to appear in another picture. They're mean spirited heritage character assassination of her may have contained a chilling grain of truth on August fifth nineteen sixty two Marilyn. Monroe was found dead in the bedroom of her home in Brentwood empty bottles of the pill. She used battle her depression where scattered around the room. Marilyn Monroe kills self read the now infamous newspaper for headline in the New York Mirror. Everything pretty much points to this inevitable conclusion but apparently there was enough mystery occurring on the night of her death to fuel of you you skeptics and probable crackpots. She she had taken some meetings even signed for several deliveries her housekeeper. Eunice Murray was there along with. Maryland's publicist who sent away at four thirty in the afternoon when Maryland therapist. Dr Ralph Greene arrived for a session with Maryland. After the session Dr Greenspan asked that Eunice Murray stay the night to keep Maryland Company at around around seven PM Maryland received a call from Joe Di Maggio Junior. Her ex-husband son and Maryland had stayed close friends. Since the divorce and Joe Junior wanted to share share some news with Maryland about his breaking up with his girlfriend. Joe Junior later told reporters that he found nothing odd in her manner. When speaking to her that evening but Maryland's old boyfriend and the actor? Peter Lawford who as we mentioned earlier was married to the Kennedy's sister. Pat called at around eight PM to invite Maryland to a party and he told a different story story. LAWFORD said he was worried and that Maryland sounded like she was under the influence of drugs. The conversation ended with what amounts to Maryland's last words. Say Goodbye to Pat. Say Goodbye to the president and say goodbye to yourself because you're nice guy. LAWFORD tried to reach Maryland again but he couldn't get through. He called his agent. Who tried to get through to Dr Green but couldn't but then got through to Maryland's lawyer? Dr Who got through to the housekeeper Eunice Murray assured everyone that Maryland was okay but Eunice Murray awakened suddenly at three. Am that Sunday and had a feeling something something was wrong. She saw the light on Maryland's room but the door was locked. She peeked through the window from outside and saw Marilyn. She was lying face down on her bed head covered in a sheet and clutching the phone. Receiver she called Dr Greenstone immediately and he broke a window to enter Maryland's room where he discovered she was.

Not all of the young patients will need bariatric surgery from patients who are sent to us to be evaluated for obesity surgery. We have approximately I'd say seventy five percent of the patients who we have seen for surgery are in a pathway for surgery, and that surgery, usually it's what's called a sleeve gastric to me, which is removing about seventy percent of the stomach taking the stomach which is shaped in size and shape really about the size of a inflated American football into signs of a bad of banana. I've been talking with Dr Greenspan about thanksgiving. But now I want to turn to a near cookbook, which is about how she cooks at home. But before we get into that. I just wanna give shot up to two recipes from previous books because I think they're great for thanksgiving. One is the whole pumpkin filled with everything I have cooked that a million times. I love that. It's called pumpkin stuff with everything. Good. It's from my book around my French table. Although it's now all over all over the internet and a million variations because it's me to be varied. It's a whole pumpkin the U stuff essentially with anything you want. And if you are searching for a main course that will give vegetate. Cried of place like the Turkey. This is the thing to serve. It's beautiful. No matter what no matter what you do to it. It's beautiful, right? The other one is for people who have a thing about cranberries, your roasted pineapple recipe with the jam and spices all how interesting to think about it as a substitute for cranberries. So good. It's a great recipe. But I never thank you. I never thought about it that way. So it's a whole pineapple roasted with what ever spices you have in your cabinet, jam and rum or brandy or what a good idea. Thank you, actually, what I do to make it a little more. Thanksgiving is I roasted already cut up so chop it up mix everything together relish. It's like a chutney relish yet. So good. So now, let's get to your book everyday door. You have become a book machine. I don't know. I'm all Devon. And this is my thirteenth book. I've had a lot of time to right. So this is such a different kind of book from your previous books. And and I know that some of these informal dishes are ones that you regularly make for your friends, but you make them in very different places. So you you travel, you go from Paris where you have a house, New York and Connecticut, so maybe you could share how being in each of those places might determine a little bit of what you would cook. So this book was mostly done in Connecticut,.

"It's it's actually only my second. I call it like soup to dessert book because I do a lot of a lot of my work has been in baking and pastry and somebody said to me, I didn't know you cook tonight thought. I mean, I'm a responsible adult. I fed my family savory food before desert. So this is the last book that I did that was food food was twenty ten and working on this book was so I didn't realize this until I finished it over those eight years, we've been spending more time in rural Connecticut. Where I didn't have pike place market. I didn't have the open air markets of Paris, which is in my other hometown. I had the supermarket and so and I was an hour round trip from it. And so when I looked at the recipes, I it was interesting to see that might cooking changed. I'd become a simpler, more practical cook, you know, just trying to like grab this much flavor as I could ingredients that I could get it the market and everything that I had on my fridge door, you grow anything. I have a small garden, and I can grow herbs. I travel too much too. Yeah. I did once have tomato that would have been good had I been able to keep the garden until November. Yeah. I almost had one tomato. Yeah. We used to lament about that here in this town, but with global warming we've had beautiful dry summers. Warm, heat and good tomato. Whether and of course, we're our farmers in eastern Washington. It's blisteringly hot in the mid summer. And sometimes so hot that it drops all the tomato. Blossoms so Jewish for. So favorites what you know? I think I think of our listeners has being in their cars right now of being in their gardens shutting it down for the winter. What's good? Seattle's kept moist chill in the air. What are some good jenner's dinners? Sue before a hit it off on book tour. I may dinner for eight and we started with. Oven char tomato Steph peppers. And so I love when I can like tuck a surprise into something. So these are bell peppers sliced long way. And when you see them, you just see have cherry tomatoes. Arranged. You know, it's like an arts and crafts project arranged over the top. But there's an under layer of breadcrumbs with herbs, and lemon zest and anchovies which just adds a little pop to it. And you don't see it. So you just get to taste that. And I love this dish because it looks so pretty when you when it goes into the oven. You you have that wonderful moment of look what I made, but it's you can prepare it ahead. It can be served hot warm or room temperature in love room temperature dishes. We had that I we had this. Tom you're going to have to look it up for me page one forty nine. I love that. She loves the page number house. Well, no, it's the only page number. I know because I gave this Stu such a long title that. I can't remember anything, but the page number it's called subtly spicy softly hot slightly. Sweet beef stew. The stew on page. One forty nine. So it started as a kind of classic French stew. I had beef cubes that we're going to marinate red wine, and then I open the fridge door. And there was Jiang. The Korean pays seem like a great addition with red wine, and ginger and starring niece Niessen it took a took off. And then pairs poached pears for dessert. So that turned out to be a great dinner is this particular picture shows that it might have an oxtail or some sort of saddle bone in it. So if I can if I can get yeah. An ox tail or a narrow bone shank bone. I love to add that to the the oxtail has little gelatinous in the flavors. You really deeper, but I can't always get them and good fat too. No, we're in the middle of the country. I don't know if you know that or not. Pair country. Of course. And they are they are right now. They are perfectly to recipes. Yeah. The poached pears I push them in white wine. I usually see them in red. But I like the white because I think it allows the flavor of the pair to come out more, and you get to see how beautiful the pair is also a camel pair a pair cake that has Chinese five spice. Flavoring it. And that's I think the Chinese fights vices really nice with pair you ever tried rub with love just getting. I just made a Chinese five spice multi Donut. Donut for a lot of different things dried pineapple, and and freeze dried, strawberries and things like that. But I love that flavor that vice bison at works. Well, in one of my books have a fi spice angel food cake. It's an ingredient that is fragrant and warm and floral, and there's just a lot going on there. So I think of it in the family of Garam masala the peace. The same kind of you described it so beautifully that kind of warmth thin little bit of spice and mysterious. Well, you know, it's a blend that I think you get a much bigger fan of that mix of spice than I am of just. I know Mary very often when people use just seen them. I get a little bit turned off. Because I think it's something people use too much. It's too easy. Yeah. And also the us too much of it. I think overpowering you must be French. That idea. We're talking with Dr Greenspan her new book, everyday Dory. "We've discussed all the major theories, but there are a few more wild card theories that deserve to be tossed into the ring. Some conspiracy theorists have speculated Maryland was killed by the CIA to protect state secrets, including the details of their plot to assassinate Fidel Castro, CIA documents prove that they did in fact consider Maryland a security risk. We also knew the CIA was surveilled her house just before her death, but there's no actual physical evidence that the CIA was involved in her death. Here's another one, the f. b. i. killed Maryland as a threat to the Kennedys, hefty, I director j Edgar Hoover famously did not get along with the Kennedy family, but killing an innocent woman isn't the most obvious way to get political leverage over them. And again, there's no evidence that points to FBI involvement in Merrill. Lund's death. It also could have been the mafia as we discussed last week, some of the secrets in Maryland diarrhea related to the mafia. And shortly before her death, she was drugged sexually assaulted and potentially blackmailed by mafia associates. All of that's true. Some theorists have even suggested that the Kennedys recruited the mafia to help them deal with the Maryland problem. That said, we have a whole houseful of suspects, but none of them were in the mafia. All considered. We think the most likely explanation is this Marilyn Monroe's. Death was an accident caused by a lethal combination of prescription pills and barbiturates forcibly administered by Bobby Kennedy and his associates, as well as a main Gould attempt to revive her by Dr Greenspan Kennedy Greenspan, and their associates with the assistance of the LAPD intelligence division conspire to cover up the death as a suicide to protect themselves from culpability, the involvement of both Kennedy and Greenspan is the only theory that holds up to all the facts, but due to the chaos and disorganization of the night's events. It seems unlikely that it was premeditated conspiracy to murder. Maryland's death was a tragedy, but even more. Tragic was the mishandling of Justice that followed it. The investigators disregarded any evidence that didn't fit their suicide theory. And even today, most people disregard that hard evidence because it contradicts the official verdict from nineteen sixty two. This gets to the issue at the heart of every conspiracy theory. Who do you believe? How do you determine who's telling the truth and who's lying out of fear for self protection for fame or money? The truth of Marilyn Monroe's death may be lost a history with nearly all the key witnesses now long dead and gone. But by digging for the answer, we've found truth of different sort..

"But this revelation came later in life when he take into writing memoirs about his time on the fours, although he isn't known to have given false information in any of his books. It's not outside the realm of possibility that he made up the story about pulling over Peter Lawford. To make his book more sensational. But it does line up with a time line of evidence at about two AM. A helicopter was chartered to pick up a passenger. Presumably Bobby Kennedy from the beach outside law for townhouse. The helicopter records are corroborated by complaints from Lawford neighbors that helicopter taking off from his residence in the middle of the night, had blown sand into their pool. Also around two, a m Lawford arrived at the apartment of private investigator, Fred tash according to tash law for told him that Maryland was dead and that Bobby was being flown back to northern California. He wanted, oh, tash to go over to Maryland's house and remove anything that might incriminate them. We can only imagine what must have been going through tasha's mind as he removed the three sets of surveillance bugs. He had placed in Maryland house. It's unknown whether he also stumbled upon the bugs that had been placed there by the CIA and according to some accounts by the FBI, the mafia and Twentieth Century Fox, at some point in the night. Maryland's lawyer. Mickey Rudin came to the house as well. And then at four, twenty five AM. The police were finally called sergeant Jacqueline's was the first officer to respond to the call at around four forty. He spoke to Dr Greenspan Dr Engelberg and Eunice Murray Norman Jeffries was also there. But Murray claimed that she had called Jeffries to clean up the broken window after the body was discovered. So he wasn't interviewed within the next hour. Clemens was relieved by captain James Hamilton who according to Jeffries had already been at the scene just hours earlier with a dozen members of his intelligence division. Presumably Hamilton was there to fix the flaws in the story before the full investigative unit arrived because between Clemens preliminary report and the statements given to the investigators later that morning, too key details chain. Changed the witnesses shifted their time line to get rid of those four unaccounted hours between discovering the body and calling the police and a water glass was placed next to the pill bottles in Marilyn's bedroom. When the investigative unit arrived at five thirty AM Mickey Rudin and Pat nukem were at the house along with the other witnesses, it's likely that they had still been on the premises when sergeant Clemens arrived because he hadn't searched the house to see if anyone else was there. This would explain another strange detail nukem was at the house that morning, but her car was not. The only logical explanation is that Lawford had driven her there the previous night and she had stayed behind all morning after Lawford left. But why implicate herself by staying behind everyone who saw nukem that weekend said she was absolutely hysterical with grief. The police said, difficulty restraining. Are and she refused to leave the scene. Maryland was one of Newcombe's best friends. It makes perfect sense that she'd be too distraught to lever side, especially if she'd been there when she died the previous night. But there could have been another reason she refused to leave. She still hadn't found that diary. The police and Norman Jeffries did recall that nukem was hysterically searching through drawers and going into Marilyn's bedroom. Even as police tried to seal the room off, she'd stayed over at the house on Friday night. So everyone assumed she was looking for something she'd left behind, but it's also possible. She was looking for Maryland's diary. The little book of secrets, Maryland had been killed, protect. Eventually, nukem was driven away from the house and Murray's car. The house was sealed up from the swarm of press outside, and Maryland's body was taken to the morgue. And now. It's time to talk about the most obvious evidence of Kennedy, family involvement, the cover up looking at all this evidence. It's undeniable that almost every key witness involved in Maryland's death, either lied buried evidence or stayed silent during the official investigation in nineteen sixty two. But the people involved were such a diverse seemingly unrelated group doctors, police coroner's, ambulance drivers, even a housekeeper and a handyman. Why would they all conspire together to cover up a death?.

"Either way it didn't work shortly after ten thirty Lawford must have driven over to Maryland's house, which was just a few minutes away. Pat nukem who was still at Lawford house after the dinner party went with him, ambulance driver. James Hall said that when they arrived at around ten thirty Lawford new come were already there. Nukem was hysterical if there was a plan to kill Maryland. She apparently knew nothing about it. As we said before hall saw Dr Greenspan thrust, syringe of an unidentified liquid into Maryland heart, snapping her rib and killing her instantly. What would happen next implies that if Greenspan intended to killer he wasn't working alone before the ambulance left hall saw a police officer talking to Peter Lawford. This was strange since police are never dispatched until the first resp-. Ponders call in and confirm that the victim is either dead or in transit to a hospital who called this officer to the scene and why that police officer was later identified as sergeant, Marvin, Lia, known and intelligence, division officer who was typically assigned as Bobby Kennedy security detail when he was in town visiting Peter Lawford, Ian wasn't supposed to be on duty that night, but he checked out police car at some point before the garage closed at eleven that night. It's unclear whether he had previous knowledge that something would happen to Maryland, or if he checked the car out and rushed over after he'd been told about the incident going on at Maryland's at around ten, forty, five, Pat nukem called her friend and neighbor. Natalie Jacobs who is at a concert at the Hollywood bowl nukem still hysterical told her that Marilyn Monroe was dead Jacobs didn't come for. 'word with this information until twenty two years later in nineteen eighty four. But her memory of that phone call confirms that Maryland was known to be dead by his earliest ten, forty five. And that nukem was either there at the scene or had been told about Marilyn's death immediately after it happened. This is definitive proof that key witnesses, including Pat nukem conspired to cover up the facts of Maryland death. After this evidence was uncovered in nineteen Eighty-four. The DA said, quote, if we had known of Natalie Jacob statement at the time, it would have cast an entirely different light on our investigation. And perhaps we would have arrived at different conclusions and quote, according to Norman Jeffries at around midnight, Dr Engelberg arrived and officially pronounced Maryland dead around the same time about a dozen men Jeffries identified as plain clothes, police officers. Arrived. One of those officers was dented as intelligence division. Captain James Hamilton according to Jeffrey's the officers and Dr Engelbert worked together to formulate the suicide in a locked room plan. They moved Marilyn's body to the bedroom place, the empty pill bottles on her nightstand locked the door and broke out through the window. They invented the story that Murray had noticed a light in Maryland's room at around midnight and called Greenspan. Green came over and broken through the window and then Greenspan called Engelberg who arrived to pronounce Maryland dead. At twelve ten AM a police officer named Lynn Franklin, pulled over Lawford car. He was speeding down Olympic boulevard. A few miles away from Maryland's house in the passengers seat was Dr Greenspan and in the backseat was Bobby Kennedy. Lawford said he was driving Kennedy on urgent business. Franklin, let them go without an official warning. He didn't want to risk chewing out for holding up the attorney general. The question is how credible is officer Franklin. He was a decorated and well respected member of the Beverly Hills, police department for decades..

"The argument grew more heated until there was a loud banging sound followed by Maryland screaming and telling them to leave. If Maryland was injured during her altercation with Bobby, that would explain the bruises noted in the autopsy report Murray and Jeffries came home about an hour later, and Bobby and Lawford we're gone. Maryland wouldn't tell them what had happened, but she was hysterical Murray called greens again. And he said he'd be right over according to Jeffrey's when Greenspan arrived. Maryland told him that she decided to stop seeing him for therapy. They spoke in her bedroom for about an hour. And then Green Left, but not before telling Murray that she should spend the rest of the night there and keep an eye on Maryland. Maryland was threatening to reveal her diary to the public. She had fired greenstone and Murray. And now the Kennedys were poking around the house if they wanted that diary. This was their last chance to get. It proponents of this theory are unsure about the next few hours of the nights time line, but they speculate that at some point in the night, Murray, sedated, Maryland with chloride, hydrate, enema as mentioned earlier. She then broke into Maryland's file cabinet in the guest cottage to search for the diary. According to Jeffries at around ten thirty Murray saw Maryland slumped over unconscious on the bed in the guesthouse clutching the telephone. But when in how did Maryland get into the guest house? She must have stumbled over there after hearing Murray searching around. But when Murray saw Maryland lying there conscious, she called an ambulance in panic. Now, here's what the ambulance driver James Hall remembers about that night. They arrived at Maryland's residents a little after ten thirty and hysterical woman. He identified as Pat nukem lead them to the guest cottage where Maryland was lying on the bed, unconscious. There was another man. They're identified as Peter Lawford Maryland's last phone call a little before ten thirty was to law for who lived nearby Lawford denied going to her house that night. But after Maryland's alarming call, he nukem who was at his house for dinner party. Could have rushed over to check on her James Hall in his attendant Marie liebowitz placed Maryland on the floor and began to revive her with the resuscitate her. They had almost brought her back to consciousness, but then a man with a big black doctors bag arrived told him he was a doctor and instructed them to remove the resuscitate her and performed CPR instead that man was later identified as Dr. Greenspan hall was surprised because the recess eter was working, but ambulance drivers are trained to never argue with a doctor during an emergency they did is they were told green pulled out a syringe, filled it with a Brown liquid and injected it into her heart hall assumed at the time that the liquid in the syringe was Drennan injecting adrenaline into the heart as a common treatment for overdose victims. But adrenaline is colorless before being exposed to air. If the. Liquid was Brown as hall remembered. It must have been something else like nembutal, which is Brown in liquid form. But on the other hand, adrenaline often comes in Brown, tinted glass, vials, maybe just misremembered the liquid as Brown. Fair enough. But whatever was in the syringe, what happened next was shocking. Green put the needle into Maryland heart at an incorrect angle and her rib cracked. But instead of removing the needle, he leaned into it and injected the syringe into her heart. Anyway, Maryland died immediately while if James Hall was telling the truth, that's pretty undeniable evidence that Greenspan was personally responsible for Maryland's death. And there's no reason to believe hall was lying. His account is perfectly in line with the evidence, the time of death, the dual avidity from her body being moved from lying face up to the face down position police found her in, but the men. Michael examiners didn't notice a needle. Mark near her heart and marks are notoriously difficult to spot even though they didn't find a needle Mark there easily could have been one. They missed there was no mention of a cracked rib either entirely possible that the medical examiner's didn't notice a small fracture in the rib simply because they weren't looking for it. They're objective was just to confirm the method of her overdose, unless the rib was visibly broken into pieces. There's no reason they would have done an x Ray to check for smaller fractures..

"A few weeks earlier, green Senate asked Engelberg not to prescribe or any nembutal without consulting him first. But the very day before Maryland's death, she told Dr angle Burg that green said it was all right to prescriber nembutal again on thinking -ly angle. Wrote her a prescription without checking in with Greenspan. I at the time Engelberg was going through a difficult separation with his wife and it's likely he was too distracted by his personal problems to think clearly about whether Maryland's word should be trusted, but this momentary lapse in judgment would have devastating effects. Chloride hydrate interferes with the body's ability to produce the enzymes that metabolize nembutal when the two drugs are taken together. Nembutal can't be metabolized quickly enough leading to potentially lethal build up of nembutal in the blood and liver. Presumably Murray administered the chloro- hydrate enema at around ten pm around ten or ten thirty Maryland drifted into unconsciousness. When Murray got up around midnight and realized what had happened, she called Dr Greenspan. But by the time he arrived, it was too late. Maryland was dead Greenspan called Engelberg and told him to come over immediately. Their failure to keep track of Maryland's. Prescriptions could result in malpractice charges and end both their careers. But if the death looked like a suicide, they could maintain that. She took the fatal combination of medications on purpose despite being warned not to take the two drugs together. Either when Ingeborg arrived, they called Mickey Rudin who was Maryland's lawyer as well as Dr green Sen's brother-in-law room later recalled that after he arrived greens and exclaimed, quote, angle Burg gave her a prescription. I didn't know about in quote together, they formulated a plan to stage Marilyn's death as a suicide. They later body out emptied her pill bottles, locked the door from the inside and then broke out through the window. The story was that Maryland had locked herself in a room alone. And when Dr green son eventually broke in through the window, he found her dead Murray washed the bedsheets to hide the fact that they'd been soiled as a result of the enema when sergeant Clemens arrived. He did find Murray doing laundry. That's a strange thing to be doing right after your employer dies Los, you're covering up evidence that you accidents killed your employer. So far. This theory is logically sound. It explains a lot of curiosities in the autopsy like the irritated colon and lack of pill residue in her stomach. And if her body had been moved while they were staging, the crime scene, it explains why there was Levinsky on both sides of her body and why the police founder in such an unnatural perfectly straight position. It also explains why Murray Greenspan and angle Burg waited for hours to call the police after finding Maryland's body and why investigators start their stories seemed rehearsed Dr. Greenspan was a respected member of the medical community, so it's not impossible for him to have pressured the coroner's office into disregarding evidence that contradicted a suicide verdict. He was also a staff member at UCLA where the organ samples disappeared from. But there's one hitch in this story during the investigation Greenspan told deputy DA, John. Minor that he emphatically didn't believe Maryland had killed herself. Green played minor tape that Maryland had made on her own tape recorder in the days before her death where she discussed her plans for the future and sounded hopeful not depressed after listening to the tapes minor was fully convinced that Maryland hadn't committed suicide. So if Greenspan was trying to cover up the death as a suicide, why would he tell the investigators that he believed it wasn't a suicide, maybe his conscience to him after Marilyn's death Greenspan was never the same colleagues said that he became a bit strange. He stopped seeing patients and devoted himself to teaching and writing. He would battle depression for the rest of his life until his death in nineteen seventy nine. It's possible that the guilt had already set in and he told the investigators, it wasn't a suicide as a covert way of confessing aside. From green sudden change of heart. There's nothing in the official story to contradict the theory that Greenspan and Engelberg staged Maryland's accidental overdose as a suicide. In fact, this theory actually answers many of the questions that arose from the official explanation just based on the facts we've discussed here, I'd give this theory's believability in nine out of ten, but there's more evidence to discuss and more questions that remain unanswered..

"Body wasn't found until after midnight? Why did the autopsy revealed no traces of pill residue in her digestive system? Why was evidence disappearing from the coroner's file? And why did Bobby Kennedy deny having been at Maryland's house that night. Despite the official coroner's verdict of probable suicide. Autopsy analysis, I witness testimony and circumstantial evidence all suggest that suicide isn't the most likely explanation, but if that's the case who killed her and why next week will examine all the facts that contradict the official verdict and try to piece together what actually happened that night. The first conspiracy theory is that Marilyn's death was an accidental overdose. This theory holds that Dr Greenspan and Dr Engelberg failed to communicate concerning the medications. They were prescribing her and they staged her accidental death as a suicide to protect themselves from ou- practice allegations. The second conspiracy theory, Maryland was murdered as part of a communist conspiracy involve. Giving her doctors and housekeeper. Our third theory, Maryland was murdered on the orders of the Kennedy family to stop her from revealing damaging information to the press will also discuss a few stranger explanations for who might have killed her the CIA, the FBI, the mafia, or even labor leader, Jimmy Hoffa since so much of the story hinges on verifiable, eyewitness reports. The truth may depend on the answer to this one question who can be believed the people in power who might lie to protect themselves or the little people who might lie for the sake of fame. "At four, twenty five AM for hours after she was found dead police sergeant Jack Clemens received a call that Marilyn Monroe had committed suicide. The caller, a dentist himself is Dr Engelberg Maryland's position accounting for the long gap between the discovery of the body and the call to the police Dr Greenspan told sergeant Clemens that they had to wait for a response from the Twentieth Century Fox publicity department before calling the police. But the skewed time line was only one of many problems Clements saw when he arrived to investigate. There were four people at the house when he arrived Dr. Greenspan Dr. Engelberg Eunice Murray and the handyman Murray son-in-law Norman Jeffries Clemens noted. Greenstone was acting strangely defensive as if he was challenging Clements to accuse them of something. He went on to remark that Green's behavior. Just didn't fit the situation. People can act strangely when they're in shock or grief. That isn't necessarily a sign of guilt. Clemens and his colleagues Sergeant Robert Byron who arrived to investigate later that morning. Both noted that UNICEF, Murray story of what had happened that day sounded rehearsed as if she had been told what to say. Portions of the story didn't make any sense like her bizarre statement that she had called the handyman Norman Jeffries in the middle of the night to clean up the broken glass after they broke into Maryland's room or the four mysterious hours that passed before the police were called. His next observation was that Marilyn's body was lying perfectly straight face down on the bed with no traces of vomit around her mouth. Overdose victims typically convulsed before dying, leaving their bodies in contorted positions. It would be extremely unusual if not impossible for her to die in such a still. Serene position Clemens asked the doctors if the body had been moved, but they said, no, the complete lack of vomit and pill residue was also suspicious, especially since in all three of Maryland's previous attempts to overdose on sleeping pills. There had been so much fall meant that the people who founder were able to pull undigested pills out of her mouth. But despite his crime, scene experience Clemens wasn't a doctor, and he would have to wait for the autopsy to make any conclusive judgments about how she died. Perhaps the most intriguing problem Clements saw judging by the empty prescription bottles and the extremely high levels of nembutal in our blood which would be revealed in the autopsy. Maryland must have consumed at least fifty pills, but there was no glass of water in the locked room for her to have swallowed them with Greenspan and angle. Berg even helped him searched the entire room and the adjoining. Bathroom, but there was no drinking vessel to be found. Clements was puzzled by the entire situation, but he was soon will leave from duty by another officer, sergeant Marvin, Ian, on the same sergeant, Marvin, Ian known who had been a member of John F Kennedy's personal security team two years earlier in own sealed up the house. And by the time, the full investigative force arrived. All three key witnesses had changed their story. Murray had previously told Clemens that she woke up at midnight green arrived at twelve thirty and Engelberg had been called to the scene before one AM. But now the group said that Murray didn't wake up until three thirty am green didn't receive or call until three thirty. Five and Engelberg didn't arrive to declare Maryland dead until three fifty, the four hour gap between the body's discovery and the police. Call was no longer a problem crime. Scene photographers also captured a glass of water on the nightstand. If sergeant Clemens is to be believed, someone must have put the class there after he noted its absence in the initial report, the brief unofficial investigation into Marilyn's death would raise more questions than it answered. Why did neighbors reports seeing an ambulance and police car outside Maryland's house at ten thirty pm? If your

"And there was nothing to suggest. That she was depressed or under the influence of drugs and other inconsistency. Peter Lawford told the police that at seven thirty, he received a call from Maryland who sounded extremely depressed and was slurring her speech. She told him quote, sake it by the president in say, goodbye to yourself because you're a nice guy and quote, then the line went silent as if she had put the receiver down or dropped it. He tried to call back. But the line was busy. Lawford was hosting a dinner party at the time and his guest recall that he did get a call from Maryland at around seven thirty or eight, but it seemed to be routine and unimportant. He didn't seem concerned or confused at all. After the call came in, Maryland had to phone lines and both phones were kept in a spare bedroom. She called the telephone room. It was common practice for her to take one phone into her bedroom at night. Multiple friends at she. He had a terrible habit of calling in the middle of the night when she was unable to sleep. It's possible that she accidentally left one of the phones off the hook, but either way Eunice Murray said that Maryland took the other phone into her room with her and made several other calls over the course of the night. Although we know her phone was bugged, no tapes of her conversations have ever been made. Public are only knowledge of those final conversations. His from the recollections of the friends in associates who claim to have called her that night. I, she received a call from her friend Henry Rosenfeld who was in New York at about eight or nine pm. They discussed their plans for the future including a trip to New York. The next week. He said that nothing in their conversation gave him the indication that she was depressed or suicidal Mexico. Her hairdresser Sydney Giller off at about nine pm. He said that she was extremely upset when they spoke not depressed, but frightened. She said, Bobby Kennedy. And Peter Lawford had been to her house that afternoon and they'd threatened her Giller off told her they talk about it in the morning between nine and ten pm. She called her friend, Jeanne Carmen who said Maryland sounded exhausted and frightened, but she wasn't slurring her words. She asked Jean to come over. But Jean said she was too tired. The last call was to Jose Bolanos the Mexican screenwriter. He. Called her about ten pm. He refused to disclose what they talked about, but he said, quote, Maryland told me something that will one day shocked the whole world and quote fifty six years later. It's still not clear what he was referring to in the middle of their conversation. Maryland put the receiver down disappeared and never returned. It was the last anyone would ever hear from her at about midnight Eunice Murray woke up to go to the bathroom. So the light still on under Maryland's door and knocked to see if she was still awake. When there was no response, she tried the door handle and found that it was locked alarmed. She called Dr green. There are a few problems with his story. I Murray's bedroom had a bathroom attached to it. She didn't need to go out into the hallway if she was going to the bathroom. Second. As investigators quickly noticed the newly installed carpeting was a bit too thick in the door scraped along the top of it, making it impossible to see any light from beneath the door. And third, just a few hours after she gave her first statement to the police. She changed the time line entirely and said that she didn't wake up until three a m, maybe the shock had missed with her memory or was the whole story invented the cover up the truth of what happened that night. Either way when Dr Greenspan got to the house. He went around back and looked through the window. He saw Maryland, lying in bed, collecting the telephone. Apparently unconscious. He broke in through the window, checked her pulse and determined that she was dead empty bottles of the nembutal. He had prescribed to her were on the nightstand, the grief of her tragic life had overwhelmed her once more. Maryland had overdosed for the fourth and final time, but she really take her own life or was the suicide staged to cover up something even more tragic..

"The chairman of the board at FOX was a close personal friend of the Kennedy family, and he had received numerous calls from Bobby Kennedy just before Maryland was fired, but he might have been calling about a film based on his book the enemy within which was in pre production at the time, maybe but two weeks after Maryland's dismissal. She in Bobby were both invited to a dinner party at Peter and Pat Lawford house Cording to Pat. The purpose of the meeting was to stop Maryland's repeated attempts to contact the president since his private phone line and bid disconnected the day after the party. Bobby went over to Maryland's house and they spoke privately for a while. The very next day phone records confirm that Bobby called the chairman of the FOX board. Again, later that day FOX immediately began an effort to renegotiate Maryland's contract coincidence. It's. Totally possible that bobby's calls were entirely unrelated and FOX decided to renegotiate because they didn't have another star who was both popular enough in talented enough to replace her Maryland reached a settlement with FOX to restart filming and things were looking up. Again, she did interviews for life and cosmopolitan to repair her image and whatever had happened between her and Bobby had apparently been resolved. But the final blow came on July thirteenth, the f. b. i. received another memo about Maryland's ties to suspected communists a copy of the memo reveals that an unnamed informant who knew both Maryland and Frederick Vanderbilt field had heard her talking about a lunch. She attended with the Kennedy brothers where they discussed atomic weapon testing. The informant's name has never been disclosed, but the only people known to have been close to both Maryland and field where Dr Greenspan Yun. This Murray and her family in the Mexican screenwriter named Jose Bolanos four days after j. Edgar Hoover received the memo bobby's private phone line that Maryland had the number two was disconnected. He refused to speak to her at all, leaving it to brother-in-law Peter Lawford to deliver the news to her that she wasn't going to be able to speak to Bobby again with even Bobby turning on her. Maryland began to unravel. She was never given an explanation for why both Kennedy brothers had suddenly cut off their contact with her from her perspective. She was more than a mistress to them. She told friends that Bobby had even promised to leave his wife for her. This was the last straw in a life already marked by mistreatment and abandonment throughout late July. She saw Dr Greenspan Dr. Engelberg multiple times a week. They were both prescribing her strong sedatives. Including a barb itchy at called nembutal at the time. Nembutal was commonly prescribed to treat insomnia and exiled, but it since been taken off the market because it's extremely lethal in high doses today. Nembutal is mostly used as an anesthetic in hospitals as well as for youth in Asia and capital punishment. Soon paranoia began to set in Maryland told a friend. She was suspicious of Dr green sons motivations, and she had begun to suspect that he'd put MRs Murray in her house to spy on her. She also began to mistrust publicist Pat nukem who had been keeping a close eye on her for months. Maryland did have a family history of paranoid schizophrenia. She have been developing the same problem that plagued her mother, or was she correctly sensing that her closest confidants had alterior motives. She also. I told a friend, she was afraid her phones had been tapped, which it turns out was entirely true in the last weeks of her life, the CIA the FBI, the mafia labor union leader, Jimmy Hoffa, and possibly Twentieth Century Fox were all surveilling Maryland's house in a stroke of absurdity, Maryland herself. Asked private investigator, Fred tash to install a recording device on her own phone unaware that, oh, tash had already been hired by someone else to install recording devices around her house. What could the Hollywood starlet have possibly done to arouse the suspicions of so many different groups of people on the answer lies inside a little red book. She kept locked in a file cabinet, her diary in keeping with her dedicated self education. Maryland had been keeping a diary..

"If Maryland accidentally revealed a connection between those key players, it would be bad publicity for everyone exactly how they convinced her to stay silent is a mystery. But when she came back the next week, she was in a terrible mood. She was already dealing with a stressful job and failing marriage and apparently being rejected by the Kennedys, put her over the edge a few days later. She overdosed for the third time. She spent a week in the hospital and was released into the care of Dr Greenspan and a physician named Hyman Engelberg Maryland's condition stabilized, somewhat, and she went back to filming the misfits as soon as the production. Wrapped she and Arthur officially separated and soon afterward in November nineteen sixty JFK was narrowly elected president election may have been coached one, but I think that there is general agreement by all of our citizens that supreme national effort will be needed in the years ahead to move this country safely through the nineteen sixties with the campaign behind him. He had a little more freedom to go back to seem Maryland, the blonde actress, disguised herself with a black wig and horn, rimmed glasses and accompanied Kennedy on trips, introducing herself as his secretary. She was even given the phone number of direct private line to the White House. And she had a codename miss green to be used when she called the White House switchboard in late nineteen sixty one, Maryland, moved back to California. After seven years on the east coast, she soon bought a house of our own in Los Angeles just minutes away from Dr greens home, where her therapy sessions were held multiple times a week around this time. She also began seeing another man. The president's brother, Robert F Kennedy who had recently become the attorney general Robert or Bobby made frequent trips to Las Angeles to stay with his brother in law Peter Lawford, Bobby and Maryland met at a party in LA in nineteen sixty two, Maryland carried a little journal around with her that night, taking notes on the political issues. Bobby talked about so that she could read up on them later. They talked and danced all night. And according to friends, their relationship eventually became sexual. When Maryland bought her new house, Dr greens, and also recommended her a housekeeper, a woman named Eunice Murray unbe. Jones to Maryland Murray wasn't just a housekeeper. She was trained psychiatric nurse and a close family friend to the green sins. It certainly looks like Dr Greenspan might have wanted to put Murray in Maryland's house to keep tabs on her behavior, but his motivations weren't necessarily nefarious. The simplest explanation is that he was worried about Maryland and he trusted Murray to look after her after all. She had already attempted suicide three times and without someone trustworthy in the house, her next attempt might succeed. Fair enough. But whatever the motivation was Maryland's friends would later complain that Murray's behavior was strange and suspicious. She was always watching them and was sometimes caught listening from the doorways. She would often talk on the telephone in a whisper may be reporting back to Dr Greenspan maybe that Maryland herself. Never expressed any reservations about Murray in February of nineteen sixty two.
