"Present themselves and it's a good reminder on a day when we're heading into an inauguration in which the nation's capital will be empty of any people attending the inauguration. The military will be standing posts because of recent skirmishes. There will be people that are, you know, blasting out through social media that they're not gonna watch it and other people are gonna have watch parties. And in the midst of all of this in America, the church is keenly placed right smack in the middle of it. That's why we've been having these conversations with pastors over the last week or so. Dr David Ireland my guest on Dr Island Way, It's pretty clear, my friend Ryan Basil said last week. He goes Isn't hard. It's just hard doing it. Doing the right thing is pretty simple to divine treat people as though they were made in the image of God. What are one or two tips that help us do that better this year? Two things, Kevin. First Diversity is a growth process. Welcoming of people is a growth process. We have to grow his reconcile ours. It's not static. It's ongoing. You get better at it. Exactly. You have to get better at it. Second. Don't be embarrassed off reluctant off getting a diversity coach. We don't see ourselves. I think the average NFL team has 15 coaches and these guys, they make a lot of money. They're the best of the best in their craft in the world. But yet on average, each team has 15 coaches, so the purpose of the coach Is not for someone who's a scrub purpose of a coach. It's from someone who's very good at what they do, but they want to get better. And that's what happened in Galatians two. All coach Peter on diversity. So, Peter the way Peter carry themselves the way he connected with others the way you present themselves, the way he was interpreted by others was far more effective. After he had been coached, because many of us we lack awareness on so we're going to then see how others interpret us it requires and that we sit where they sit and You what they feel and talk with, And so we gonna be able to understand what it means to practice advocacy because we walked in issues to some measure, and so we have to have diversity coaches in our lives well, and I I think those are both very practical and friends. Certainly there are more research sources. Dr David Ireland's book. One in Christ that he released just a couple of years ago..

We we Once again have missed the goal of the effort that we were putting forward and because of you, we're it 109% of the amount we were looking for to help those families in Lebanon, So thank you again if you didn't give w dot com Kevin McCullough. Glad to have you with us every single day. We normally take the kind of top news stories of the day and help you break them down in terms of what they mean and why they matter to you, and hopefully there's some redemptive element of How we can at least approach it and look at it A CZ. You know, If you listen to this show for any length of time over the last 20 something weeks it's been one of the darkest periods in our city. There's just no other way around it. People have been locked down there have been church is closed. You have had businesses that have supplied family their their their earnings for their entire life, and it's just wiped away. Because of the events of the day. And as we have gone through this, we've had a number of local pastors that have been on to talk about the impact of the lock down the impact of the the government's kind of plodding along in terms of what it's doing. We've heard from Urban and suburban pastors alike. Dr. David Ireland's been here Ryan Basil from emergence has been here, Jim Symbol a from Brooklyn tab. We've we've we've tried to encompass as much of the Thie the family in the tri state area here and wrap our arms around what is happening in the churches, but friends I know that personally, you get discouraged I hear from you regularly. And I know that my family struggles with the same thing. And it was one of the reasons why I was very pleased. Tio catch a sermon recently from Doug Becker, who happens to be the pastor of theology. For emergency church in New Jersey. Ryan Basil heard here Sunday afternoons on AM 5 70 the mission in New York. But it's ah pleasure to welcome Doug to Calvin McCullough radio for the first time. And we found out talking affair that we're old college buddies. So, Doug welcome. It's good to have you. It's good to be with you, Kevin. Um First of all, I want to compliment the church of your employment for having a pastor. It Of theology on staff and it before we get into the specifics of what you talked about recently, I just talk to me about because I'm fascinated by the stuff that emergency does. I really have a deep love and appreciation for Ryan. And for Steve, the founding pastors. But talk to me about why it's important for you as a congregation Tohave, a pastor that is examining things through the lens of theology. That's a great question. I often tell people that the job my job is the pastor of theology here is to figure out what a pastor of theology does. In some respect. All pastors are pastors of theology, meaning that we need to be constantly taking our cues from a measured examination of God's word. And a wise application of that toe life. And it in practice, however, that's often that's often difficult to do in the hustle and bustle of pastoral ministry. Now, obviously everything that our pastors do is kind of shot through with that. But But my task here is to be the guy who takes the time to reflect to examine cultural trends as well as things that important teaching initiatives in our church and to try to figure out what the best biblical way to say things is. My my job includes a lot of a lot of writing of a lot of reading school. I kind of get paid to read a lot of just meeting meeting with people and counseling people. Ah, answering questions and things like that, and bright. Yeah, well, and you guys have. Ah, and I'm familiar Not only with this from a personal firsthand experience, but I've known people that have been part of emergence since it started. And so I've And as I've looked at different church models and interacted with so many pastors on the air Doug it's been one of those things where the older I've gotten, and I'm starting to get to the stage of life where I refer to myself that way. Ah, somewhat unwillingly, but I I am doing it. The more I am appreciating. The fact that there are there are those in the body of Christ right now, even in local churches, even in this area that are saying we want to beam or intentional about all that God calls us, too, and not just, you know, kind of shoot from the hip, but make sure that if we're doing a sermon, Siri's that it's that it's accomplishing a goal of EXP OZ it ing scripture and getting to the deeper meaning or If we're addressing a cultural trend, it's from a thoroughly biblical viewpoint. And so it seems to me that those are all dynamic qualities that have to be ever pursued, and maybe never fully mastered. But that in that pursuit is where you get the rial. Kind of meat for the those that are going through that process with you. I'm just curious if you have a similar observation about the kind of necessity of that for the local church in the day in which we live this modern, you know 2020 America. Yeah, it's it's absolutely necessary. We, uh we live in a day when you know where there's a We're just bombarded by a lot of information, a lot of things claiming to be authoritative. And on and we really need to be careful because one of the challenges in this digital age in which we live is that we have access to a lot of information, but sometimes we're not so wise and evaluating that information and and as Christians, we have first obligation to the Lord..

"A Philadelphia police cruiser and a state trooper cruiser were already set on fire in the streets of Boston what began as a peaceful protest against the death of George Floyd turned violent and that was the story of the weekend friends so much activity in some fifty different cities and in fact there there is there are some developments in the department of justice today that seem to indicate that may be of that all that activity wasn't even about the original the subject of the protest which was the nation's mourning of the death of George Floyd and the unjust as the injustice of a police officer who took his life not being arrested the friends we have to pick up and move through another day and another week and particularly for those who name the name of Jesus I think it is an important discussion for us to have on this Monday as we will no doubt begin to have more discussions via our social media will tell you last night there were some compare strong thing said between members of my own family that this is obviously tearing at the fray of not only the soul of the country but who we are as a people and so Kevin McCullough welcoming you into a brand new week we have a very special broadcast for you today joining us in just a little while he is the next generation of leadership at the Bethel gospel tabernacle in the city of queens rod Caesar the third will be joining us but I want to turn to one of our the senior faith leaders in the New York metro area I don't think he gets too mad at me when I call in the senior because he doesn't look like he's any older than about twenty eight but doctor David Ireland is back with us who was with us for the night of prayer and David it's always a pleasure to have you with us it's always fun to laugh and have some joy together but today the nation's morning and I'm just curious as you watched the events unfold from last week what did the lord say to you what what were your thoughts and how are you directed over this weekend yeah my pleasure to come back on there again with you Kevin however the the mood in the center of the country is not the best but my mind went back to the apostle Paul in his statement to the Ephesian church officials for first twenty six the employed version of the Bible says be angry at sin and immorality at injustice and ungodly behavior yet do not sin do not let your anger because you shame nor allow it to last until the sun goes down and so your policy yes we have a right to be angry in fact if we're not angry it's all and I understand you know the need to protest I think when the post protesting went south in terms of it being a criminal in fact and and then violent as well as the damaging of the innocent property or the property of innocent people then then there's a problem then that moves beyond that then the sense of it being constructive protests to destructive right now and so that's a problem well I wanna I wanna make very clear and in my later our today friends those of your listing if you join me on the other station AM nine seventy answered five I'm gonna have some investigative reporters joining me who actually believe that the peaceful demonstrations were overtaken by foreign elements that had nefarious motives and we'll we'll get into that in detail at that time but I I having said that David I think one of the things that that there were lots of images that stood out to me obviously the the image that that started all of this was that police officers sitting on the neck of George Floyd and as I read stories about George Floyd over the weekend Franklin Graham released story that it that it appears he may have come to faith in Christ not that long ago prior to this kind of wrongful arrest and of course the action that led to his death there's a lot of interesting things about that initial stage of response to it where you had the democratic mayor of Minneapolis and the Republican president of the US coming together saying this is wrong and we're going to allocate all resources to prosecution into justice into pursuing justice and I think that everyone expected that we were gonna have demonstration for the injustice perpetrated but if people are going to use this for nefarious means and by that I don't mean the protesters that are outraged by the Floyd death but but outside groups coming enter to overtake them and to do things with them sort of being the human shield by behind which they do all of their their evil I think it begins to take a different turn and that's why I want to clearly state on the show that we stand with the Floyd family we stand with the radio station here and the and the and the listenership of Kevin McAlary we stand with the Floyd families they pursue justice for the wrongful death of George Floyd and if that's jail time or worse for the for the police officer involved in you know so so be it that did justice is what is demanded here but I is the church moves forward David and you've done something at Christ Church that is very rare there are not a lot of churches that are thoroughly and inter dimensionally diverse is yours and when you have people that come from very foreign and different viewpoints coming together to be the body it is a unique thing that I think only the Christian family really fully understands it's easy to sit in all white churches it's easy to set an all black churches it's easy to set an all Latino churches it's a very hard thing to pull all those perspectives together what lesson should the church be taking away from the events of the weekend and how we need to respond as a as a as a body of Christ okay great question Kevin I think that the idea is announcer the listeners I wanted to understand my perspective I pastor a church with over seventy different nationalities so I'm African American yet I provide pastoral care to Asians Latinos to whites to the black Caribbeans black Africans blanket on terms of African American as well and so I'm in that position of of of being able to be an advocate for them and advocacy across the racial lines requires a mindset that says at the end of the day I'm not seeking to be right at the end of the day I'm seeking to experience reconciliation and that is a very very narrow focus that has to be there because we can be right and still be sold divided and divest of an approach and our behavior and that's the conversation that we must talk about in terms of you know you hear the the media contest saying that we must have a national conversation and I agree a hundred percent but often times people don't know how to hold a healthy cross race conversation and so I always tell people Kevin I say don't be aimless when you approach that kind of conversation be purposeful understand what the end goal is that you have and I said don't use monologue because lots of people want to just dump their pain or dump their hurts on another race and I say welcome dialogue it has to be a conversation that's a two way street it's a give and take it's listening and with that point is that one cannot be thin skinned get hurt so usually because the person you're talking to they're not that adept at cross streets relationship and so you must understand that size to be thick skinned then I said that the conversation should also those are the other don't is don't appear in vulnerable another words if you're standing there with a stoic way your heart to heart it your impenetrable no one can be able to have a good healthy discourse with you rather express home ability in the conversation say I I wanna learn I wanna understand and my last point in helping having a healthy cross race conversation is that as I mentioned at the at the top of my little soliloquy hitters don't seek to be right but seek to be reconciled when you do that your protest totally different that's the type of national conversation we need to have and it may be painful but yet if the end goal is reconciliation versus being writes that we're gonna find a self experience in dealing on the national level Dr David Ireland such wisdom and I'm so grateful for your voice being part of the national conversation today with Kevin McCullough radio friend thank you for for being here thank you thanks for your time and your thoughts today what does your Kevin thank you Kevin McAllister with this the conversations just getting going another perspective from millennial pastor.

"Relate great friends with great food and great. Let's with you and thinking that I like this guy who is this you know and that was years ago and we stayed in touch over the years. So welcome friend. Thank you good to be here. Yeah well we Women looking forward to this conversation One of the things that we're trying to do is is an ex double worship team. One of the main things right now is trying to encourage leaders in churches 'cause we earn a time like we have never seen a not since probably the black plague back in them. What century or something have we seen anything that is down? Churches like this so We're just looking for places in people that can help encourage so man. We're looking for you to encourages today. No pressure if we've known each other quite a few years now just a No. This is not necessarily the reason for are gathering today but The reason we met Elmich new years ago as you were introducing pure praise. It was brand new back in those days. And I just wanted you to know that since that time I've probably given away seventy five to a hundred copies of that book on three continents. Blessing my brother long before you were ever in Kenya. Your book was there being used by worship leaders and to the back in the early two thousands when I went over there shortly after I got exposed to it and Started taking it up at the Kenya with me. I've taken it to Northern Ireland handed out worship leaders there. And it's a it's all over the place of course have given it to my teams ear locally and we've gone through it and it's Just a treasure and Julia you are with just most recently. Our church went through worship lives back in Jane. Ardent of the year going to worship life and that really really blessed are folks One of the greatest communists which is was my goal is they said. It's so neat that we're all learning the same thing at the same time. And yes that's what was my goal was to. That's my goal in worship. I mean the whole point of Ours I'm aware is to bring this to a Rice Unity. And that's the reason we all sing the same song at the same time. So you know when we all get together in one of cord than can do good things and we've seen good results from worship life and I appreciate you may connect- resource available as men a good one. Yeah I appreciate you bringing that up today of with our focus on Africa this everything going on as I have wondered how it went. I'm not had a chance to actually touch the about it so I'm glad to hear things went well without. I appreciate your vision to do it. I know you brought it on the. You're the worship leader direct worship pastor. Whatever your title is there at First Baptist Church of Raw Brazil Alabama? I'm sure you wear multiple hats like so many of us do but I mean I'll do some administrative stuff there you do okay. I was wondering what else you might But but you know it's unusual to be honest That that someone other than the pastor has that kind of influence to bring that in. And the pastor pastor clearly have each will trust and. I think that's really obvious despite seeing how you brought this in and he was open to it and you and you did any took effect within your whole church it went will really do because what what's Yeah I man. I'm glad to hear that any what happens. Sometimes worship leader person Will bring in which is great but it ends up just primarily being for the Worship Ministry and Worship Life was written for the whole church and so until the passer of the church. The senior lead pastor. Buy into the idea. It doesn't really ever get to be full church wide so I'm glad that he well glad that a John Martin our our staff on staff with us that he and he worked well with you and got everything set up and and and John kept me abreast on but I didn't. I've not had chance to talk you personally until now John. John visited a couple times and did a great job. Facilitating everything that we had need of on this. Go AROUND AND IT. It was really good. I pray well I'll let him know. You said they add in fact he may be list thing in and he heard you say that hymns. I did WANNA bring you on today because you've written some materials that I love. I think they're incredible and I- goodness man. I mean wow. I didn't I didn't know you were a rider along with musician administrator. I mean you're you know do all kinds of stuff and you all knowledge in your head but yet you found time to write these amazing materials so so in an effort to bring to our people some things can encourage them through this unprecedented. We keep hearing that were but it certainly is unprecedented time. I thought about you and materials that that she written I'm looking at one now. Called the name of God and a a non-exhaustive look at an inexhaustible subject love that subtitle by Nutley M Harris. This is a great resource man. What a great daily devotional. I don't know if you really bought. It would be used that way so much. But I've been using it as a sexually. Okay in about just by me. Basically doing similar to what you've done over the years just writing down things that I was learning things that I was reading an extra got through with the two hundred and some odd names that are in there. Yes actually make a pretty decent book and I had been. Just blogging it. You know my daily blog and are not frequent blog anyway but the way this came about and I know that was part of what you wanted to talk about today longtime ago When we first came to the shoals area we moved here in ninety eight and at that time there was a group of pastors and other people that were meeting every Tuesday morning for worship and prayer and this was across the board cross-denominational on's cross racial lines. I mean it was just a really unusual and very Very good time of meeting every Tuesday morning and during a as part of that. They scheduled a prayer retreat. We went down to double springs near Double Springs. Down to Camp McDowell and about twenty of US went down there and spent two or three days together. Just reading the word and praying and we'll McFarland happened to be one of the guys that was their camp and wills gaff with from the show. Mary isn't he yeah he he lives here. He's not from he'd been here forever off one day while we were there in the retreat. He started talking about something that I really had not heard in that term anyway and that was our language of worship and he started describing the relationship for insist between husband and wives. What if the only name you ever used for your wife? My Wife's name is Martha Martha was the only name I ever used for her. Martha how are you today? Martha Martha Are you hungry market. Which liked to go to you know? Would you like to go with me to the Grocery Martha Martha Martha Martha is her name in. It's a wonderful name but it doesn't always communicate what we want to say. Sometimes I WANNA call her sweetie or sugar or honey or whatever cutie pie I mean. There's there's other things other ways that I communicate with her and want to communicate with her other than Martha and he said in as he was describing this he said you know the name. Jesus is wonderful. It's a great name. The name God is Supreme. But there's so many other ways that we can express that conveys who he is to us in that moment or in our life or whatever and he just said we need to expand our language of worship fears later out went up to a conference up in Massachusetts Not Massachusetts Pennsylvania. The northeast worshiped institute and I picked it mainly because my wife and I wanted to go to New York so I looked for operas close by. I mean that's how it got there was. It was not a great spiritual pilgrimage or anything like that. It just was we. Were looking to go to New York and it was a way to get most expensive pay. So we went up to fareless hills Pennsylvania to a thing called and one of the keynote speakers. There was Dr David Ireland. I don't know if you've ever heard of him. He pasture a pretty large To New Jersey and I don't know in his. His topic was basically on this. The language of worship. He did a three message series through the week and also during one of his messages ref referred us to a set of books. These books right here. There's actually six volumes of this thing. And they're not. This is written by guy by the name of Carl F. A. Chinnery and in it he describes God the revelation of God and the Authority of God and David. Arlen made this required reading for his worship team. They had to spend at least a couple of hours a week. Read just reading through an all it is is describing the character and nature of God so when I got back home from that I was that was Inspired I guess or or motivated anyway and so I approached are bracing. I said let's expand our vocabulary. I want by the next couple of weeks as we gather together for worship practice. I want you to bring names that you run across in scripture or that you've heard referred to names us toward God and quickly. The list grew to three hundred plus and found later. There's a whole much more that even we didn't discover at that time but basically that's where this came from as I started taking those names and looking at the scripture where the name is referenced and then just describing what the Greek or Hebrew word means and then how that applies to our live. And that's that's the reason. This book is around It Wa- as they worship Devotional but that's kind of well came what I what I do with it. It's an it's an addition to my quiet time. I'll I'll read it because it takes only a few minutes but it's thought provoking and it helps me focus on a name. I love how you take them out the medical you know and so as to the beach to the season you cover a man and so Yeah IT FOR ME I. It's really a powerful addition to on. I'm already doing Go through I'm going to the book of Romans and I'll journal through time which is Great. You know my thoughts were we mean the Lord now read commentaries sometimes but but what you do is bring in for me brings a an mentioned into that and make sure I stay fresh. I think I think it's also healthy to read. Osama Day or do well for me lately. I've been reading your book and helping me so I would recommend that one Tell us about you. You have a couple of other books too. Well I do I do. There's can I mentioned just before we get off of that. Can I mention just one more thing just please? There's plenty of a buck bounce. So whatever you want or by are the favourite name that I came across this one that was I was already familiar with but when I found the context of how this name came about it. Just absolutely bless me. And it's the name Addo Ni- When God came to Moses as he was in the process of bringing the Hebrew job or an out of Egypt became Moses. Said up till now. "Jury. People of God. How three this through the past for us? The help for the preacher is exactly what my next guest is talking about not only in that cut. They're that's Dr David Ireland. The senior pastor at Christ Church in New Jersey. But also the theme of a seminar that's coming up just around the corner. Tuesday may seventh and Wednesday may eighth and Dr David Ireland joins us now to discuss this very idea Dr. And it's always a pleasure to have you with us. But thanks for coming on today at my pleasure. Kevin thanks to speak to you in the audience. Yeah. Now, the we had you at our our first. Collaborate event a couple of years ago, and your message very much at home with pastors that rented -tendance, and you have a big heart to help younger pastors servewell into do well in the ministry that got calls them to why are you motivated along those lines? What is it about that that appeals to you? My heart cries to help shape passers as well as young home of Titians offensively to other word. Preachers. And the reason is because I remember when I first began Christ's church thirty two years ago, and I longed for shaping and moulding in preaching, and I understand the role of seminary, but I'm coming from a supplemental platform, I'm partnering with alliance theological seminary at college in this particular seminar, and that's my alma Mata aligns logical summer. Right. But the perspective I'm coming from Kevin is that I've had the opportunity to speak in some seventy five countries of the world fact just last week. I was in Dubai in that city, they're United Arab Emirates and my task there. I was brought together by a hundred millennials from forty three countries to help shape them. So that they can be able to shape Christianity by your twenty fifty and I was by the opportunity, and then from there, I went to Compal Uganda to speak to a national pastor's conference, which came and international conference, eight African countries. In the past four months address, perhaps people a hundred different nations of the world in different conferences. I wanna pass on some of the things I've learned so that purchase could be more global their presentation, and how they communicate in how they select bible passages because the world as Friedman says in his book has become flanked by the internet by online ministry and presence. We need to be not only cross cultural, but multinational our communication, and so I'm going to be talking about that in our seminar. And then is in second day, which is called an immersion experience for the real hands on how to practical aspects of preaching, right? Let's talk about that though for a second. Ireland is the is the quality of preaching poorer or better than say where it was when you were a seminary students. You talked about the lack of of not having anybody in your early ministry to come alongside you kind of help you shape that do you see the church in a little bit more trouble on the communicative scale, or has technology changed things. And there's really just a whole new skill set. That's needed where what do you see the current state about a bit of both? I think that the preaching quotient is dropped appreciably. The target is moved and lots of preachers trying to be contextual and contemporary are not being effective. And I bring that out because the twenty seventeen to research studies indicated that that there's a category now in terms of religious categories called the nuns and any SDN affiliated. It's now jumped to about twenty four percent in America other words, the nuns reflect. People that are atheists agnostics on affiliated in terms of religious persuasion or religious stripe. The reason why that category is growing which encompasses the agnostics is the fact that one of the big questions that they address and gave this data's to. Why do they categorize themselves as such they say that their answers their questions not being answered their questions that deal with apologetic does God exist? If God is good. Why does evil exist? You know? Is there more than one way to God? And I raised those questions that has been raised by the affiliated because preachers are not answering those questions we're leaving those questions to the apologists arrived been weaving into our sermon unapologetic piece. In fact, I have a teaching team and preaches that I provide pastoral coaching too in guidance. I tell them you don't have a complete sermon until you're showing me so specific things that sermon. Number one show me the door to the cross number to give me an apologetic as to. How do I defend the Christian faith, not an argumentative sense? But we've it into your sermon. So that people who are listening can be able to move from this place of being what I call on church into holy devoted followers of Christ. Since I challenge preaches to be able to integrate that into their interest in construction. Well, and that's and so that's why this seminar is important because you're going to give them some nuts and bolts in addition to trying to cast a bigger vision for them. And then Dr Ireland I've got a guess because I know it's true in in the media world, but I've got a guest that in the pulpit that sometimes we just need a little booster shot to like, there's just like we we may fall back in love with what our first experience was with that particular skill set in this case preaching, but sometimes, you know, we go for long dry periods of time where we're not around other people that are that are. Challenging us or, you know, inspiring us, and so we just need a little bit of refreshing to to to see that flame get lit again. Absolutely. Absolutely. I think that it's been said that on Mondays purchase wanna quit because. Worst critic, and we beat ourselves up. I'm preaching could be very lonely profession because if a person doesn't understand that world, then they don't know what the socio with it. And plus a lot of technical sense. A lot of spikes and adrenaline that creates the sense of a Downer afterwards. So know specific things that we do to help boost and maintain a even keel adrenaline level. We find ourselves going into this deep depression after preaching even if we use baseball metaphors give it even if we hit a home run Sunday. Yeah. So I think that preaches need to be together to have conversation to not just to hear one another prince, but I've dialogue and so the seminar is facilitating conversations with seasoned preachers. And as well as millennials end runs the entire gamut in terms of denomination this last year, we had some twenty to thirty different denominations represented from people from across the country as we gather together to say, how do we sharpen each other in our skill set of being preachers? Well, friends the event is coming may seventh and eighth and there's a Tuesday that is kind of like plenary sessions and then on the on the following day the eight it's called immersion. And it's going to give you even more hands on if you want any information about this. Maybe your pastor would really gain from taking a couple of days and going to this you could recommend it to Christ Church. USA dot ORG Christ's church dot dodge, Christ Church, USA dot ORG. And then. Look for the big banner ad they're preaching seminar. And then click on it, Dr David Ireland. We'll talk again before that rolls around. But congratulations and thanks for caring about our pastors. We can't take good enough care of them. But thanks for what you're doing. And caller number nine for one million dollars read a complete this quote life is like a box of. Rita. You're cutting out. We need your answer..
