So nothing political because then they won't let you come in and vote and at I think at this point now, if you if you do have a costume medicine anyway referencing e or even Dr Ci that might be viewed as as political it's too political. Yeah. Because it's been politicized public safety. Yeah. Yeah and I mean I think a very popular costume seems to be dressing as a handmade from handmaid's tale I imagine that's now considered political because. They might think you're going dressed as A. "Minutes after this happened said that he was seventy one and other said he was seventy two when he passed away and many many new sources credible news sources were getting this wrong I believe the correct answer ultimately was seventy one, but I'm not sure but. The point is that because one source initially got this wrong several other sources proliferated that incorrect information. The question asking our study is whether people are sensitive to that. What we call false consensus that arises when information is being repeated extensively but it ultimately traces back to a single error or a single claim that was made. Yeah. It's almost like you're measuring the echo chamber. It's a bit more complicated than that, but it's the same expert multiple articles. Should we assign more credibility to them I? Suppose it's all about echo chambers, but we're interested in is. A mechanism by which echo chambers are allowed to exist or are perpetuated I would say so I encounter a little bit of this. As I read news, you know sometimes where I find these articles that were you know they look like an assignment someone really didn't want to do and they're kind of course and pasted from here and there, and it's information I've. Already read I always personally feel like I'm this nothing new for me. My Post cheerier believe should not be updated. I haven't learned anything from yet another article citing yet the same expert on a subject and I'd like to believe that about myself but your studies imply that we in general human beings have that cognitive filter in place well, our studies suggest that. A lot of people think they're like you. They think that air aware of this repetition and in one of our studies, one of the more fun studies actually, we ask participants this question like if you were faced with repeated information that all sides, the same source, what would you do? Would you give that as much credibility as if it was all different sources? And participants will tell us no not at all I. think if it's citing multiple sources that's relevant to me I would believe that more. But what's funny is that we have them complete the tasks that I described to you before and even when people have just reported to us that they value that true consensus consensus that's based on corroborating evidence from Multiple Independent. They still exhibit the same effect as are other participants. In other words, they still overvalue false consensus or information that is repeated by multiple sources, but ultimately goes back to a single source. So subjects think they're aware and remember we're making them aware of this not after they our task. But immediately before a complete our task and they're still swayed belief that the economy will improve, for example, is still swayed by the fact they heard this. Repeated information despite what they explicitly believe very interesting. Maybe I'm being hasty with this, but would you label that as people being irrational? That's a great question. I think that's really the most important question that our work can address and our answer is no or at least we're agnostic on the point of whether we should call this rational or irrational. The one thing that I'll say is that there are a lot of cases in psychology where there's A similar theme to this people are very much persuaded by the sociological information rather than the information itself Classic Work Going Back Sixty seventy years now talks about how you know we're really wired to conform in different ways, but there's one experiment that we have in our paper that from our view suggests that people are definitely not being irrational or at least not irrational in the strongest sense. So that experience a little bit different from the rest. So as I was telling you before we create these scenarios about things that people don't really know anything about but they're also things that are complex whether the Japanese economy is going to improve or not improve. It's not something that you can objectively no and make a prediction about in that way but it's something that having a lot of expertise is going to help you to understand even if it is complex. So one of the studies that. We do in the paper is the exact same design I told you before except instead of learning about an issue that's complicated. Perhaps objective to some degree people learn about an event that either happened or did not. So the event that we chose it's a little bit silly but we had people read articles about a bear sighting that happened at a local high school. Let's say and there was debate about whether in fact, there was a bear. And in those cases when you find that the same articles are saying, Oh, it's just one student who said, there was a bear people don't take that seriously. So they understand that for something that can be perceived directly more people seeing it is better than fewer people seeing it. It's only in this territory where this little bit of subjectivity where people are willing to believe in this false consensus as we're calling it. So what we think that means. Is that people have an assumption that when the same source is being cited multiple times there's a reason that it's being cited multiple times just to take a very modern example Dr. CI is the expert in our country on all matters pertaining to cope it, and if you see every article citing what Dr Fauci said, you wouldn't think anything of it I mean of course you know there are other experts and you know that he's not. Acting alone but you sort of make some assumption that he is speaking on behalf of that consensus on behalf of those experts, and so the articles are correct inciting him. So that's just to say that it's not always rational to believe in this sort of false consensus but there's at least some cases where it might be what our work shows is that people have a strong tendency to believe in repeated information whether or not that is rational. Thanks to our sponsor brilliant listeners have you been over to brilliant? There's always new content appearing on. Brilliant. Expert Says U.S. Current Trend in Coronavirus Cases Isn’t Sustainable
"With us. Dr. John Wade CI, the professor of the Global Health Programme, professor of health system and policy program. And the director of the Center for Global Health College of Public Health and Human Sciences at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon. And Dr CI Welcome back to the Mark Mason Show. It's my pleasure to be back with you. Well, I'm glad to hear your voice again. I always use you is kind of our update into the really world of Corona virus. What's really going on and a lot has happened since we last talked. On that the virus seems to be more prevalent than ever. But we seem to be learning to live with it. I suppose one of the virus limits we can live with. I mean, we won't like it. But can we get by at this rate? No. We add a to high rate a TTE this great, many, many stay or counties there. Health care for city would not be able to 15 we We have to bring down because most European and Asian country at much lower levels, so they are able to lead you much higher level of activity, which we still cannot. And so if we maintain this high level or pandemic, it will hurt both our economy and people's life and health, and so we had to do something to bring it down to a much lower level. Wow. I don't know how we do that. The governor's talked about maybe travel restrictions. Is that one possible thing we should seriously look at where maybe people from high incident states are are not allowed to come where they if they do. Come there, quarantined. Well, it is. It's It's a good idea, in theory, but in practice will be very difficult to implement. Because he had to send lots of people to monitor to supervise and that costs money. So are you thinking another lock down or slow down? No, no, I think for the last Upfield. Early June, We duty our 2.5 months left town. And we see the serious impact on Mike, honey, and I don't think al economy can sustain more locked down. What we need to do is to learn how to live. Save it. How to operate our business. I work safety and one particular major. Uh, I know the difficulty but that's very critical measure, not just Oregon. But slowly, 90 states we were not able to implement and that is one of the biggest reason we are in this high level off epidemic. So remember in my early and Evi I mentioned that there are three step process. That's important. The first step is contact tracing. The second step is testing and so We're not doing a superb job, but we have the great improvement compare with March or April in term of the first step. But we still fail on the last step that is after the testing. What do we do with the confirmed cases So far, we only isolate people with moderate to see via symptoms. And completely neglected people with mild or no symptoms, and the latest studies, said just people with mild to know Simpson. They accounted for about 80% of total infection. But this 80% of total infection also, if we don't contain them, they also contribute to about 70 to 80% of new infection. Just think about this way. We pay attention to the Penta pus it with more moderate to severe symptoms contained them. But we let the other 80% continue to spread the virus free tea, and it will be a miracle if we don't have. Ah, hi. Hi. Cases continue to be in this house. How did we get more testing? I mean, we can barely my doctor tells me that he has no more tests because they've shipped him off to Florida and Texas and other states that need him. That's a problem I was comparing with Beck in March or April, Wright had done better dimension. We're not doing a super job during the testing as well, Well, I'm with you on the testing, and they and the containment. It's just a question of Why aren't we doing it? There are multiple reason one if people are still resisting the idea ofthe isolation and quality scene and the other financial Many Asian country. I don't know much about European country mediation country like Taiwan, they when they have a mandatory quarantine, isolation, government pay for the costs and company people. The example of Taiwan in their quarantine and isolation. Everyone who and the quarantine everyday received about equipment to certify us started per day for 14 days. So people who need to be quarantined need to be compensated because they lost income and we're not able to do that. I know we're on our financial crunch. So it's both financial reason but also political social reason, because people are not waiting. Yeah, I would have to be afraid, though. Doctors at the AA liberal Mike what would fake Corona virus just so he could sit at home for two weeks and get paid by the government? But there's you know, there's the question of you gotta have the test and it's got to come back positive. So I'm with you. I think a lot of listeners were with you test and contained testing contain, And maybe that's what they should be trying to come up with. In the way of money in Washington, D C right now, the World Health Organization says We should not expect a miracle where a vaccine is concerned. Are we being spoon fed in folded a cure A vaccine, If you will make may not be what we think it's going to be. So that I have some reservations because we still know ability to about the vaccine because there's no effective action available yet. I think I just saw the news. Russia has a plan to have a effective action by October, and we don't know how safe it is, but I think they're waiting between safe and effectiveness. For the U. S. I think the earliest might be the beginning of next year. And I cannot say anything about how effective it is because we haven't seen that yet. We don't know yet, but most likely given the nature of the disease, even an effective vaccine. The immunity may not last very long. If the image can last up to a year. That would be wonderful, but most likely will be somewhere between six months and 12 months. That means we may need to do more than one dose of

It is hard to believe that he would take off on right. Something about One of the war. Popular. Positions in this corona virus crisis without people knowing what his motives are. Well, Absolutely. And this is something that you know we have a White House Reporters are trying to get to the bottom of here. This is an op ed that look at any other administration having a senior advisor in the White House, right? The public up and about a member of the White House Corona virus Taskforce is just completely on heart of and look, It does beg the question. How did that get through the vetting process which the White House is saying? Now you're on the record. They said this morning that it is the view of the White House and that this I'm off Ed, you know, didn't go through the normal procedure. There's some reporting out there, though, that from you, No. One White House orphan, another publication that the president actually Encouraged it. Which on the one hand won't be surprising because a lot of these views that Navarro expressive in this op Ed are think that we've already publicly heard from the president when he's been critical of some of the decisions how she has made along the way. But then, on the other hand, I'm told by White House sources do that. You know this caught them off guard at the White House Chief of staff. Mark Meadows, who typically a White House chief of staff, is responsible because keeping the trains running on track in the West Wing on that he was irritated by this burned from sources that the president is unhappy about this. Hey, said earlier he was speaking to reporters, he said, You know, that's just the the view of Peter on DH, not the view of the White House. Another senior White House source told me that Navarro should apologize, but begs the question. Also, it is the view of the White House. And if this is a senior advisor gone rogue. Then, is there any punishment? We've asked the White House that they won't comment on personnel decisions. But then another senior White House officials told me that Mark Meadows is engaged. In dealing with this. No more details. Exactly what that impales. But as of now, at least we know that Peter Navarro worked well, yeah, and found she's such a pro. Hey, he turned it around, said Ultimately these things hurt the president..

The July 4th holiday means fireworks, of course, which also means a chance of injury playing with them or fires as we just heard a hand surgeon, though Ying chief talking about the injuries, thingy with the Hogue Orthopaedic Institute in Irvine tells Can IX. Ifyou're going to use fireworks at home, keep them away from the kids. Especially sparklers. Sparklers actually are the cause ofthe majority off firework injuries because they can't burn up to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit, which is high enough to melt metal. And they can burn for a full minute. She says it on. Lee takes a few seconds before sparklers can cause serious burns. Dr CI says, never pick up a firework that seems to be malfunctioning. And never put your body over a firework. Don't even play with them. If you don't have to Santa Monica officials have authorized police to start issuing tickets to anyone who violates the orders to wear masks in public to help limit the spread of the Corona virus. Mayor Kevin McEwan tells connects the move necessary because just too many people are still ignoring those rules despite a new spike in virus cases. And he says police will be paying special attention to places where ah lot of the violations happened. Looking very closely at what people are doing in.

"No point in negotiating the second part until you get past the first part. What are you what? What is your first part? The health well, the first part is the money. Oh. Yeah, once. Once you say okay. We're going to all agree to play now. How are we going to do it? And that I think is going to be a more challenging than the money, but there has to be some common sense applied here like if you're the associate, the Players Association and your the owner saying look, we WANNA put certain things in here. We're going to put some things down like the amount of testing. That's going to be available how we're. GonNa test with the requirements. Players are going to be. We have to test everybody. We can't let people knowingly go out. You know and play a game with. With you know a hundred and one temperature and end testing positive for covid nineteen. We can't allow that to happen, so we can plan for testing, but we can't plan for you. Know an outbreak or a serious sickness or you know we don't know what the guidelines will be at that point for all we know old Dr. CI might say at the end of July. Hey, if you test positive, however your ace symptomatic, you can go wherever you want to go and do whatever you WanNa do or. For All we know it might be if you test positive, but you don't have these underlying conditions, or your temperature doesn't reach this. Who knows what it's going to be so? It's hard to really put anything into an agreement into a negotiation when you don't know where to start from. And I mean the latest projections. Are Not encouraging. No, they're not elated so and so like I mean which which I think I think. September October October November October November particularly. I are going to be really rough months. And all.

"This is where we are now. If, we're not going to apply the lessons and we're just GonNa have these wish lists from Nancy Pelosi, the socialist utopia, three trillion dollars. Wasting our money and not letting anybody get back to work. We will never recover as a country. So, the question is now. You have to find the delicate balance. How do you re open? And how do you do it safely? Now I think the first area concerns got to be addressed. That is when we protect the elderly population. Those with underlying medical conditions compromised immune systems. We learned a lot from Florida. Let's keep learning from Florida. Okay. then. What else did we learn? We learn that medical equipment manufacturers. They were able to stay open and do so safely well. How did they do it? In every case that I know of they use their masks. Masks, in all, these testing centers that developing new iterations of testing. They all stay open to from what I understand. Their workers all had social distancing and masks, and they didn't have major outbreaks. Okay, another lesson learned. Check the box, okay. What else did we learn? We learn that well. Sean Hannity keeps talking about the kid that Stockton's grocery shelves because no store that I know of in new. York ran out of groceries. And I saw the same people every week in their gloves in their mass, stocking the shelves right in the epicenter of where this shift show was going on same with, but you go to my logo rite aid my local CVS. They were open to. So. What can we learn there? Now. There are people that I guess we'll never want open. The place up and politics now is intersecting in this also. You know the Democrats. All they want now is give us more money. Give us trillions for everything but covert nineteen relief. We're done with the money. We don't have any more money to give out. So the answer is getting people back to work back to work safely, and if we don't do it, there won't be any money for anybody by the end of this. You know the idea and look I like Dr Ci, but he's not been the be all end all here. Well. All of Fox's criticizing Dr, Faucher I'm not criticizing him at all. The whole world was lied to by China. They lied to us at a spectacular level and they've got to pay for that. But in the meantime you know Dr Fauci on my show January twenty seventh February tenth February twenty-ninth. He was saying the risk is low. March ninth attack. It's okay to go on a cruise if you're young and healthy. Those were not good decisions. I think March ninth. Saying you don't need to wear a mask. Okay, I'm not saying he's devoted. His life to saving lives I'm not being critical. Adopt Vouch, but every model that we were given about what the projected death rates were. They were wrong, too. So. The only thing that that where my mind goes is what worked and what didn't work if you want to open the country. And the president, saying that his critics WANNA. Keep the economy close. Yeah, because they think the worst off the economy. Is that the odds that they have a better shot of winning in one hundred and seventy three days is better. You can't deny politics. What did I say the beginning of the year? Every single thing we now see has to be seen through the prism. Of this being an election year, it's just sadly the way things role. That's the way it works, you know..
Senate Hearing Recap: Reopening Amid The Coronavirus
"Tonight. A dire warning from Dr Anthony FAUCI reopening the country too soon during the corona virus crisis will cost lives. There is a real risk that you will trigger an outbreak that you might not be able to control which in fact have reduc sickly will set you back not only leading to some suffering and death. It could be avoided. Could even set you back on the road to TRY TO GET ECONOMIC RECOVERY. A reality check from the nation's top infectious disease expert which stands in stark contrast to president. Trump's push to reopen the country. Tuesday Senate hearing unlike any before with the witnesses and many senators appearing remotely by conference an all-too-familiar precaution in the pandemic four of the nation's top health officials responsible for the Federal Response Dr Fallacy. Cdc Director Robert Redfield FDA Commissioner Steven Hahn and Admiral Brett Jarar offering their unfiltered assessments among the takeaways. Dr Faucher cautioning. It's a bridge too far to expect Corona virus treatments or a vaccine in time for the fall school semester the head of CDC could not say when the agency will finally released detailed advice to states. About how and when to reopen public places like schools churches and restaurants. When is it going to be released? Because states are reopening right now and we need this additional guidance to make those decisions. I do anticipate this broader guidance. Oh It'd be posted on the CDC website. Soon I soon isn't terribly helpful. And Dr Ci says the already staggering corona virus. Death toll is likely higher than what's reported the official statistic. Dr Faucher is that eighty thousand Americans have died from the pandemic. There are some epidemiologist who suggests the number may be fifty percent higher than that of what do you think. I'm not sure Senator Sanders if it's going to be fifty percent higher but most of us feel that the number of deaths are likely higher than that number. There may have been people who died at home. Who did have who are not counted as Kobe because they never really got to? The hospital. Tuesday's hearing grew tense at times with Republican. Senator Rand Paul clashing with Dr Jason. We can listen to your advice but there are people on the other side. Tangiers not going to be a surge and then we can safely open the economy and I have never made myself out to be the end all and only voice of this. I'm a scientist. A physician at a public health official. I give advice. According the best scientific evidence as Democrat seized on shortcomings in the trump administration's response resident trump must acknowledge that the several responses in sufficient and that more people are dying as a result but there was one point of bipartisan agreement. One thing that's abundantly clear. We need dramatically more testing. Would our country had done so far. Intesting is impressive but not nearly enough. I find are testing record. Nothing to celebrate whatsoever now. The White House has made progress in expanding the country's testing capabilities in recent weeks though public health experts warned that millions more tests per week are needed to safely reopen. The Country Lester. Alright Jeff Bennett to the White House. Thank you and one of the most striking moments from Dr found today was during an exchange about kids and the risk of corona virus it comes as NBC News has learned the CDC is preparing to issue an alert to doctors nationwide about the signs and symptoms of that mystery. Illness believed linked to Cova. Nineteen with more. Here's Kristen Dahlgren. Today in Washington a tense exchange over kids and covert and what it means schools. Consider reopening much as I respect you doctor Pal. I don't think you're the end hall. I don't think you're the one person I guess to make a decision whether it's a huge mistake if we don't open the schools in the fall. I think we'd better be careful if we are not cavalier in thinking that children are completely uneven the deleterious effects but I am very careful and hopefully humble and knowing that I don't know everything about this disease the nation's top infectious disease doc pointing to the new inflammatory disease that appears to be impacting small but growing number of children today spokesperson for the CDC saying it's preparing a nationwide alert to help track pediatric multi-system Inflammatory Syndrome. Symptoms can include prolonged fever rash abdominal pain and the inflammation can attack organs like the heart or kidneys. At least three children died in cases now suspected in at least fourteen states New York now has one hundred cases it's probably in other states And probably hasn't been diagnosed yet in other states because again these children don't present the usual Kovic symptoms. Doctors say the syndrome appears to be a delayed inflammatory response to the virus. It's severe. It is the very rapidly in these children so they can go from having fevers to suddenly deteriorating over a short period of time fortunately their treatment that seemed to be working along today. Josie past fan went home after days in the. Icu recused just to recognize the symptoms. Get your child there so that they can get the treatment and new evidence today. Even kids without the inflammatory syndrome can get sicker with Cova. Nineteen than I thought. A new study from children's national found of one hundred seventy seven kids who tested positive one in four required hospitalization. Nearly forty percent of those had no underlying condition overall children are a fraction of those most seriously impacted by Cova but tonight growing evidence against the Assumption. They are completely safe.

"Indeed is Romney pointed out. South Korea has lost two hundred fifty eight of its citizens to this virus. As of this moment the United States has lost at least eighty one thousand eight hundred and five all of the testimony today serving to contradict president. Trump's mission accomplished declaration just yesterday about testing. We have met the moment. And we have prevailed and CNN's Kaitlan Collins reports for us. Now Dr Ci also said today. The death toll is likely higher than the more than eighty one thousand. That's currently know about as the president pushes for the nation to reopen. One of his top health. Experts had a dire warning about doing so too soon. If you do an adequate response we will have the deleterious consequence of more infections and more debts. Dr Anthony Filed. She was one of four top health. Experts who testified virtually before a Senate committee today where he and others were pressed on whether the country is ready to reopen. It's important to emphasize. We're not out of the Wichita. That'll a we months but we are more prepared. More eighty thousand people in the United States have died from corona virus while the President has privately questioned whether that number is inflated. Doctor felt she said it's likely higher. Exactly what entire almost certainly is higher one day after trump claimed the? Us had prevailed on testing Democrats and one Republican on. The committee pushed back. This administration has had a record of giving US broken promises. That more testing supplies are coming and they don't I find are testing record. Nothing to celebrate whatsoever. Trump's testing coordinator said the administration hopes to have significantly ramped it up by September. We project our nation will capable of performing at least forty to fifty million tests per month. If needed at that time. Last week the president told reporters that the corona virus might go away without a vaccine. But DR founded testified. Today that that won't happen. That is just not going to happen. Because such a highly transmissible virus trump is often contradicted his own officials in public though all denied having a tense relationship with him. When asked today there is certainly not a confrontational relationship between me. And the president. We're there to give our best public device. And that's what we do have not had an occupational relationship with the president. We have a very productive working relationship with each other and also with the president and vice president at one point felt. She did clash with Senator Rand. Paul of the president's allies who recovered from corona virus earlier this year and as much as I respect you doctor fallacy. I don't think you're the end hall. I don't think you're the one person that gets to make a decision of a scientist a physician at a public health official. I give advice. According to the best scientific evidence at the White House. President trump remained behind closed doors today after one of his top. Aides tested positive vice president. Mike Pence who showed up to work in a mask will now distance himself from the president for the next few days and the vice president has made the choice to keep his Jay. Vaccines obviously also a big part of that hearing today Dr. Kelsey said he does not think one is going to be ready by the time we get to the school year but he's still hopeful that one can be produced in the next year or two but the question that still remains coming out of that hearing is whether or not that is going to be a vaccine. That's available for free to everyone. That was a question that multiple Democratic senators posed to these These health experts. That were there testifying on behalf of the administration. They said they would advocate for it but they said they could not be the one to make the decision or say for sure that this vaccine would be available to everyone free of charge Kenley Collins at the White House. Thank you so much joining me now to discuss the CNN's chief medical correspondent. Dr Sanjay Gupta. Sanjay see as always Dr found. She said today that the US does not have corona virus under control which seems factual and he warned that states and cities prematurely open up for business. There could be spikes that turn into new outbreaks and we are seeing some spikes in in meat plants in jail. How do you stop a new outbreak? Yeah I mean. He's been pretty consistent on this. Jake if you listen back to what he's been saying over the last couple of months. He has sort of warned that if the these gating criteria are not met your likely to see outbreaks the challenges whenever you reopen. You're to see some people who become infected that otherwise would not I think what Dr she really was emphasizing today in over the last few times he's spoken about this is at that point. You gotTa have testing in place. You've got to be able to fine. People who are newly infected and isolate them. Isolation is for people who have the virus quarantining for people who have been exposed to somebody and now need to quarantine themselves so they they they don't potentially spread the virus. It is that it is that that testing and that isolation and that tracing that that is so critical to preventing an outbreak. There will be new cases you want to prevent it from going into exponential growth. That's essentially what an outbreak is and can do it. If you have adequate testing you can do it even without a vaccine so that that's sort of the key. I think that he really was drilling down on in terms of reopening things. If you're GONNA do that Dr Fats. Y'All said today that it's more likely than not that the US will have a corona virus vaccine within a year or two but he also cautioned. There's no guarantee there will be a successful vaccine. How OPTIMISTIC SHOULD WE BE? Do you think it's about as optimistic as I've heard him on. Something I mean you know. There's there's I think people demand a certain amount of certainty from scientists and You know certainly someone like Dr Fao. She it's obviously hard to provide So I listened closely to how his tenor changes? I know he's He's speaking very closely to many of these vaccine manufacturers there several different platforms of vaccine that are being trialed. Meaning you know different types of vaccines that are being trialed. And there's lots of candidates out there so you know he is said A year Back in January said a year and he has sort of stuck to that. I mean you know. Things are moving really fast. Jake gotta say I've never seen vaccines move this quickly before. If one of them works if we start to see within the next. I'd say a couple of months jake You know by the end of June. Maybe if we see what are called these efficacy signals signals. That it's starting to work. It could be by early next year. Then it's a question of do. We have enough doses of the vaccine. How exactly is it going to be distributed all of that sort of stuff some of these vaccines require a really low temperatures? How do you? How do you Distribute things like that and refrigerators and all that sort of stuff. That's gotta be figured out. People should be figuring that out now but you know possibly early next year. Jake I want to get your reaction to an exchange between Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky and Dr Ci about the risks of reopening schools. Take Alyssum Guard to going back to school. One thing that was left out of that. Discussion is mortality. I mean shouldn't we? At least be discussing what? The mortality of children is Mrs for Dr Foul. She as well you know. The mortality between zero and eighteen in the New York data approach zero. One size fits all that. We're GONNA have a national strategy. Nobody's going to go to. School is kind of ridiculous. I think we'd better be careful if we are not cavalier thinking that children are completely immune the deleterious effects so again you're right in the numbers at children in general do much much better than adults and the elderly particularly those with other line conditions. But I am very careful and hopefully humble and knowing that I don't know everything about this disease and that's why I'm very reserved in making brought predictions. Sounds a you and I know Dr Doughty Chee. And basically that's him saying the Rand Paul is being cavalier And he mentioned that some kids are experiencing a deadly symptoms similar to Kawasaki Disease. We've been talking about this for several weeks. Now there's still a lot we don't know about this virus and what it might do children. Yeah I mean that was. That was a doctor foul. She is at a strongest as polite as might be But yeah he's referring to the syndrome that we're clearly now seeing in this part of the world It's a Kawasaki Type Syndrome here. We're now calling. It pins for pediatric inflammatory. Multi Organ Syndrome pins is now the name for this It's an inflammatory syndrome associated with with Cova It's a brand new thing. I mean there will ultimately be textbooks written about stuff that we are discovering just over the last couple of Weeks Jake. I mean that's how fast medical science is moving right now but it's confusing as to why we're seeing this now. You know several months into this. This seems to be a post inflammatory. Sort of thing. Maybe kids who had had the corona virus at some point in the past and yet having inflammatory sort of flare up. Interestingly Kawasaki is typically more commonly seen in Asia in China and Japan and I've been talking to people over there some of my sources. They did not see the significant other Cossack over there so this appears to be something that's more predominant in this part of the world. We're not sure it could be some sort of genetic predisposition but this is what Dr Ci is talking about also Jake you know that even if it's true children thankfully are are not as likely to become very sick Or certainly die from this but they can still be carriers as well and that's got to go into the planning as we think about schools and and how to open those up as well. Dr Faustus said it would be a bridge too far to expect A vaccine or even a full treatment before students return to school in the fall. Should parents be expecting right now that they might have their kids at home at least through Christmas and the New Year? It's possible jake. I've been talking to a lot of folks in different school districts You know we heard from the Superintendent of La Unified School district Second-largest I believe school district in the country. I think right now. The plan is to open up schools. you know this fall They're they're starting to go through the what that's going to look like in terms of you know no cafeterias no assemblies gym class and things like that not happening really understanding how to maybe stagger start student times to try and space things out for the students You know obviously six feet apart all that sort of stuff but that is the planet could change as things go through the summer but I think right now most want to open up in the fall. All right Dr Sanjay Gupta as always thank you so much. Be Sure to listen to Sanjay's hot. Cast CORONA virus. Fact is fiction. It's on apple podcasts. Or wherever you listen to your podcast up next. Will there be more cash payments to Americans House Speaker? Nancy Pelosi will join us. Live as house. "Rendez severe became very important first building block on many Joe. Willie drew willy guys. You're writing this morning about operation warp speed and that's this public private partnership led by the Federal Government to race to a vaccine. We've heard from Dr Ci and Others Countless Times that it's not until we have a vaccine that will fully able to control corona virus. Be PER YEAR. We pretty year and a half as you report this morning. The goal of Operation Warp speed is to get three hundred million doses of the vaccine available by January. How do they expect to get there that fast? Well I think one of the important things to remember what we have a tremendous amount of vaccine manufacturing research capability in this country already and this program that we reported on DIS yesterday. It essentially a goal is to try and cram down some of the timelines and do as much at one time as you possibly can usually where you test these things you do in the lab research animals and then people in manufacturing. You'RE GONNA try to do as much of that as they can. At a single time it's GonNa create waste of the hope is that it creates the doesn't necessarily mean all the scientists can work but if it does you could accelerate the time line so drew we've seen the federal government struggle or perhaps be unwilling to get things like a national testing program together to get into hospitals to ventilators where they need to go. That's happened very slowly. So why do they think this? Actually this initiative will go differently and faster than some of their others. Yeah I think that's a fair criticism. his question. I think we've heard from some other people about why wasn't something done Similar to this earlier I think there are resources of the federal government. Has There's resources that the private sector has unbe can be leopards chair visor? Johnson Johnson to name to companies working on vaccines both have the manufacturing capabilities to produce hundreds of millions of doses of quite rapidly adjacent billion doses by the end of twenty twenty one. And if you were to commit whatever vaccines works to their manufacturing capability and to change some of the clinical trial protocols to try and speed things up you certainly It does seem like you could shave. Time I'm off of this and it seems like they're gonNA be relying on a lot of entities that are working very very hard on this shown some promising early work Already so this won't be entirely federal government effort to be quote as a lot of private sector involved here all right healthcare editor for Bloomberg Drew Armstrong. "And so the idea that you would inhaler in gesture inject these Really makes no sense in can definitely dangerous as a doctor watching this as a former head of the FDA under Obama and trump. What do you think when you see people like Dr Ci? Dr Burks Dr Redfield people of medical expertise having to dance around or avoid these bizarre statements from President Trump I at the pandemic was no big deal comparing it to the flu then. Talking medical cures that had been unproven. And now this D did. You encounter that when you were head of the F. Deandre him or under President Obama two things dimension. One is not only that I work at the FDA but I also worked at the CDC for many many in one of the areas that I worked in in both locations was emerging infectious diseases So we've had any number of events maybe not of this magnitude or this consequence but many events over the years with emerging infectious diseases and one of the things that I can say is regardless of which ones they were. There are always political dimensions to these types of emerging infectious disease situations. If you think back for instance one of them that I was involved in Quite heavily was the anthrax attacks back in the early two thousands and some of those anthrax laced letters were delivered to members of Congress. So there's always politics that comes into play but one of the important things that I think. One of the things that all of the scientists in all the doctors involved are trying to do is make sure that we stick as closely as we possibly can to the evidence and that we tried to practice evidence based medicine when dealing with a situation like this Euro wrote op. Ed In the Wall Street Journal with former FDA Commissioner got lead. You said quote the threat from Kobe. Nineteen won't end when the epidemic subsides. The recent upsurge in cases in Singapore Japan shows how easily the virus can reemerge. It will be a constant threat until an effective vaccine is on the market. So what do we as a society need to do doctor to begin to responsibly? Facilitate some reopening of the contrary. Well we're in the middle of the wave It appears in some areas that were at the peak of the wave in others. We may be now on the downside of that wave others are still going up. It's very important when we make decisions about what to do that. We based on data and we base them on evidence. There are clear criteria that have been set up That had been established about when it's time to start easing back on on the stay at home mortars and some of the other social distancing measures and I think that in order to have the best outcomes we need to stick to those. I mean realizing that. The societal implications the economic implications of this outbreak. The consequences are nothing like we have seen in the world for almost a hundred years. And so there's incredible pressure to try to get through this but we are dealing with a situation where you have to balance those pressures upon trying to get out and stay ahead of what the viruses doing and if you start easing back on these efforts to quickly there is definitely the possibility that there will be a rebound in. It'll just take longer to start easing back on some of these measures Dr Steven Ostro. Thank you so much. We appreciate your time Sir now to the gym or a Bowling Alley in Georgia. According to an administration official you may recall. Crozier was removed from command after sending a letter pleading for help to help combat the that there was a corona virus outbreak on his aircraft carrier. His departure was met with hundreds of sailors yelling. Captain Crozier and applauding his service as you here right now is Barbara Starr joins us and Barbara Defense Secretary. Mark Asper He has not made a final decision. Still considering whether to sign off on this or not. What are you hearing from your sources? Well remember take The man who fired crozier himself got fired a few days later for how he handled all of it. There was a navy investigation this morning. The chief of Naval Operations Admiral Michael met with asper presented his recommendation the Navy recommendation. That crozier be reinstated to command of the carrier. Theodore Roosevelt one of the most coveted commands in the navy and Esper- so far at this hour has not accepted the navy recommendation. That is a surprise of the indications. Are that Espera was was expected to accept it. Crozier would be reinstated and life would move on but that has not happened so we are still awaiting some kind of statement from the Pentagon some kind of decision from the defense secretary at this hour. Jake there are more than eight hundred and fifty sailors from the Roosevelt who are testing positive for the Corona Virus. And he was trying to. Save Them. Barbara Starr thank you so much. A sarcastic question. That's what president. Trump is now claiming not particularly credibly about his bizarre riff last night when he asked his team to look into the possibility of injecting disinfectants into humans as a possible treatment or cure for Corona virus that suggestions spawned more than one hundred calls to Maryland's emergency hotline with questions about it joining me now to talk about this and much more. Cnn's chief medical correspondent. Dr Sanjay Gupta. Sanjay first your reaction to to president trump. I was stunned by that. I mean I had to rewind and play it back and forth a couple of times to make sure I heard that correctly. I mean it was pretty clear that he was he was riffing. There was a conversation earlier in the press briefing about environmental conditions being out in the environment. And what some light and humidity might do to the virus but then to extrapolate that and saying well. Why don't we take those same things and put it inside? The body putting disinfectant inside the body and I mean it was. It was stunning and dangerous. I I was very anxious to see how the task force was going to respond to this ambassador. Burks and Dr Steven Hahn and everybody else. So I was just one of those moments where I saw this collision of of politics and Science Really Happen. I wanted to ask you. Also the FDA warned today of serious side effects associated with chloroquine and hydroxy chloroquine. What does it take for the FDA issuing a warning like that? And what's your reaction to that? Yeah pretty significant. The language was specifically. You know there's no evidence that this works Hydroxy chloroquine and chloroquine in the treatment of coverted and there may be significant side effects. I mean It it. It's a significant warning. Jake and I guess maybe it goes without saying maybe even more of a significant warning right now because obviously there's been a lot of enthusiasm from the White House around these medications so for the FDA to say this in this environment. I think is is very significant. It does sort of follow a lot of what we've been. Hearing from other countries including Brazil Sweden and France. These are all small studies. I want to emphasize that we emphasize each time. Jake you know we all want the real what we call. Randomized prospective study so prospective. We're going forward and randomized. Meaning patients are put into different groups and the investigators don't which group is getting the medication which is not But we don't have data that that's that good yet. So based on what they've seen so far with the FDA has said.
Frustrated with fallout from his weekend gathering, Cowboys QB Dak Prescott clarifies, says fewer than 10 people were at house
"Back to us. Dak Prescott held a social gathering over the weekend. No social gatherings right now. I don't care you know if you it under ten overs over ten just Nixon. Everyone else is eating the poop right now. You do too Mr quarterback anyway. He held a party. And Zeke Elliott was also there and Dacca's upset because he thinks it's been blown out of proportion by the media and by idiots like me saying it wasn't more than ten people it wasn't out of control it wasn't a ranger But Steven Jones says Tuesday in an interview with the fan in Dallas that he talked to both Prescott and Elliott about not conducting gatherings while most of the country remains under quarantine. Here's what Stephen Jones had to say Blah Blah Blah Blah. And then do press got released a statement. Where do you come down on this March attack? Angry with them furious furious. I think two things Jane slater followed up to report that some of the images that showed the swanky bizarre looking party center was actually a a local restaurant called Nick and Sam's that she's been to and they actually took their own photos of the spread. They sent to Jack on with all these things in general. It's like if if someone were to from a PR angle examine what I did from age. Twenty to twenty eight. It would be a horrific story for the nation to follow along in general. Let's try to stay. Let's just like not get in our own way while the entire country is gripped by the biggest Health Related News. Story of our lifetime and your deck. Prescott and Zeke Elliott hanging around eating lamb wings or whatever it is eating. It's just why this wings when they don't know what was on the menu. I might be right. I have to stop. Lamps brings to stop going to my neighbor's front yard every day at five o'clock and sitting eight feet across from each other here. You're sitting across from each other not having a party inside your house with all having dinner at the same table. He said less than fewer than ten people right. I mean it's hard to keep track of the rules and get a handle on severity when the messages so mixed from layers at the national state and Cable News Levels. Dr Ci Telling People that Hate. Take a swing on tinder if you need to. He basically said it on that podcast. We mentioned if you're if you're willing to take the risk. Go down the Tinder Avenue. She said shoot. Your shot is basically what he said. So it's a dangerous time in the Corinthian because this is kind of a screw it time. Meaning some of my like. I'm sick of this screw. It like I am tired of doing this. I'M GONNA have my friends over. I've been doing this for weeks. It's tired and I WANNA see my girlfriend. Whatever IT MAY BE. It's sort of the screw it period and I think maybe that's what that got into my question. Why is Dak hosting anything? He shouldn't be hosting a heap. That means he has to pay for food and drink and everything. There's like six different people on the cowboys. That should be hosting party. Zeke should be hosting the Marcus. Jalen all of those guys who have been paid I picture. Dak and his front door charging twenty dollars a Solo Cup to come in. He's the last guy who should be hosting. They should be hosting him. It's not the end of the world but it's also west like days after he's out working out with Dez Bryant and everyone's got their arms around each other and at some point. Yeah you're young and you make mistakes again. It's not the end of the world. But you're also like an example for everyone tracking Dak Prescott in the state of Texas and like if it's cool that he's just going out like basically living his life as normally does and other people think that they can't do

The rate of Corona Virus Infections will guide the decisions about when to reopen the economy and went to hold elections correspondent. Linda Kenyon has that story. We're hopeful and it's you know cautious optimism. Dr Anthony Fauci. The Director of the National Institute for Allergies and Infectious Disease is a member of the White House. Corona virus taskforce on CNN. State of the Union. Dr Faucher was asked if it would be safe to vote in person in the November presidential election. I hope we don't have a rebound that would make this very difficult as we get into. November president trump is taking a hard stand against mail in voting for the November election. Which would be the ultimate in social distancing? The President says there is tremendous potential for fraud. Republicans have also been cautious about Mellon voting saying it hands an advantage to the Democrats. While voting rights and elections experts. Say there may be some truth to the president's claim that mail in voting is more susceptible to fraud. They also note. Electoral fraud of any form is exceedingly rare. And they say there are security measures that can address those concerns five States Colorado Hawaii Oregon Utah and Washington now conduct their elections almost entirely by mail and in about two thirds of the state's voters can request a mail in ballot without providing an excuse for not being able to vote in person on election day with special attention to election day. Dr Ci says social distancing is so important given the current circumstances we look at it from a pure health standpoint. We make a recommendation often. The recommendation is taken sometimes. It's not found she also tells CNN reopening the economy and the possibility of elections in November will not be a uniform decision. It is not going to be a light. Switch that we say okay. It is now June July. Whatever clicked the the light switch? Goes BACK ON? It's going to be depending where you are in the country the nature of the outbreak that you've already experienced and the threat of an outbreak that you may not have experience. And if the restrictions on social distancing are relaxed Dr Foul. She says that doesn't mean. The Corona virus is over when one starts to relax some of those restrictions. We know that there will be people who will be getting infected. I mean that is just reality. In the meantime she says we are hoping that at the end of the month. We could look around and say okay. "Trump gets it. He gets this fear he gets why we need to crack the dictatorship of experts. He's taking it seriously. Just good we want him to do that. He's also cracking jokes about tyrannical government. Who's doing a press conference? I believe this was on Friday. And he's standing Dr Ci and Mike Pence and Mike Pompeo or behind him and he cracks a joke about how he's got to get secretary of state. Mike Pompeo back to the State Department or as some people call it the deep State Department. You know what I'd like to. I'd like to go back to the State Department. Or as they call it the deep State Department life. I'd like to have him go back and do his job. So does anybody have any question? I the greatest part of this exchange is first of all trump is not allowing this pandemic to cower him. It's not he's not allowing it to force him into retreat into defer simply to the the dictatorship experts. But when you look at the chief expert in the country Dr Faucher. Who's been doing a very good job the minute that trump says the deep state department you see this smirk just tick up on cheese face and you can see. He's just trying to suppress a laugh. So his mouth is all sort of contorted then he just puts his head down you know. He's like scratching his forehead so that he can hide his smile He's obviously getting a kick out of. It really gives me even more confidence that the guy knows what he's doing that he krakow laugh about the the bureaucracy in our federal government that the next aspect of trump's response that is really giving me. Confidence is a tweet. He sent out last night all caps. That's how you know that. Trump tweet is really serious. He tweets quote. We cannot let the cure be worse than the problem itself. At the end of the fifteen day period we will make a decision as to which way we WANNA go exclamation point. Love this my man. That's exactly what you need to say right now because right. Now we're in quarantine we've been in quarantine for what like seven days or so and the thing that's making. The market's tanked the thing that's making people freak out is. We don't know when the end is going to be. This is going to drag on for two weeks to months eighteen months. I don't know we gotta wait for the experts to tell us how to live our lives. I guess whatever they say. That's what we're going to give up our liberties. Don't go to mass. They close churches everywhere. That's cool. That's fine. You take all of our freedoms take everything that we. WanNa do indefinitely. I don't think so Americans are willing to have solidarity come together help each other out. Even suspend some of our rights for a limited period of time. We need to know when that comes to an end and this fifteen day period was what they talked about at the beginning. Fifteen days to stop the virus or to slow down the spread of the Mars cool. I'll be a sport for fifteen days won't be spot. Sports for fifteen months won't be sport for fifteen years need an end date and so that ended now. It looks like it'd be about March thirtieth. I really hope that. President trump sticks to this and barring some seriously evidenced catastrophe on the horizon. If we don't extend it I want him to ended a fifteen days. There were almost six hundred ninety. Four thousand new unemployment claims between last Monday and last Wednesday that blows the two thousand nine recession out of the water. It actually blew past the two thousand nine recession. How much longer? We don't let that go on weaned. Let the unemployment rate get up to thirty percent. Maybe maybe it's already going to go there. Are we going to let it stay there for months and months crashed the economy? Probably not a great idea. There are unintended effects of that are public health. Experts simply cannot factory in the media are furious at trump for trying to remind people that this is going to end quickly for trying to find a quick solution to this. They're furious at trump because he attacked a reporter over this exact question he called an NBC journalist terrible reporter for asking trump what he would say to. Americans who were scared. That's the narrative the narrative. The mainstream media is putting out for you right now. Is that a reporter asked a perfectly legitimate question Mr President. What do you say to Americans who were scared? And trump unhinged crazy up against a wall. Couldn't give an answer to this question and it was such a horrible moment for trump. The exchange came after President. Trump announced the possibility of a breakthrough regarding cure to corona virus. A drug called chloroquine and some people would add to it hydroxy hydrochloric chloroquine or hydroxy chloroquine. Now this is a common malaria drug. It's also a drug used for strong arthritis okay. He goes on to describe it. I love the way he caloric win. Some people look some people might say Hydroxy Clark Win Okay. What I'm I'll take any either name but it treats. Malaria treats arthritis and this may have an application to corona virus. Great News there should be applause from the press in that room. Right how exciting. That's not what happened now. Here is the very selectively edited clip. That is going around the Internet now and being pushed by the mainstream media and all the blue check marks to make trump look like he's throwing a temper tantrum. We're scared though. I guess nearly two hundred dead fourteen thousand yours millions as you witness who are scared right now way you say to Americans were watching you right now. We're scared. I said that you're a terrible reporter. That's what I say. It's a very nasty question and I think it's a very bad signal that you're putting out to the American people. The American people are looking for answers. And they're looking for hope and you're doing sensationalism and The same with NBC. And comcast. I don't I don't comcast comcast let me just For whom you work. Let me just say something? That's really bad reported. And you want to get back to report a good set of sensationalism. Let's see if it works. It might and it might not. I happen to feel good about it but who knows. I've been right a lot. All right. Trump very forcefully has been right a lot but the response from most people when they see that clip as they say it was a totally fair question was totally outrageous response. Look he was just asking. What do you say to? Americans were scared. Trump can answer that one. That's softball right wrong. Because that was Alexander's. Follow up to the first extraordinarily biased series of questions. Here's the real clip that there is no magic drug for corona virus. Right now.

"Thanks and -serily vic so there that is gangster. Pete. I'll let you Well I I I remember the beginning of the question and I know that it's hard. Stay on top of the viruses because they mutate so you're not always creating like a vaccine or whatever the same the same virus so that's that's the answer to that question. I kind of lost track. I well. I do think with regard to reliance on China. I do think that you were going to see a change with that. Not that there will no longer be reliance on China so to speak but that people will be having plan BS and CS I think that there was interested in that. Anyway I think this now will force that With regard to the virus the thing had not been transferred from animal to human Until I believe November December of two thousand eighteen pete We've listened. Yeah that's right. You're on the same doug train but either way in vaccines you. Don't just whip them up and have them out in a week. There's a testing process So that's the answer to that. She talked about that testing process on the podcast. About looking forward to listening to that today. Dr Ci on pardon my take. He said that the fastest way they can do it safely with cutting out. Parts of the process is about a year. But he's like eat the thing is you can't give a healthy person something that's going to hurt them you know so you've got you gotta do proper testing but the fastest is about a year usually. It's much longer than that. Let me ask you this. And it's along the lines of this and I'm just curious here and this is you know this this format as I always say when it's just me or just mean U bs ing allows us to expound So is there something like you've been clear Pete that you It's not that you're disregarding it at all so I wanna make that clear because I feel like there's almost like a sense of like there's some social media shaming of people who are not taking it seriously you know like on the fan page there are still a few scramblers not many anymore Who are I? Don't know if the right word would be in denial or now. They've kind of moved the goal posts. Too I just don't think it's as big of a deal or I just don't think that it should be talked about as much because economic impact. It's like a moving target. Perhaps those words will always be there unless they delete all their posts. But I'm something that I was thinking about and I was discussing with my wife. Last night is what would like right now on a panic scale from where we were when we recorded last week to where we are now it's multiplied exponentially already and I'm trying to think what the next thing would be that would compound the panic for the majority of Americans and again. This isn't a pleasant thought. It's not. It's not a pleasant topic but I would think it would be someone who everyone knows passing away from it because the next step after that is someone you you family you know whether it be family friend and then I think it drives it home like what's going to get people off beaches that kind of question. What do you think I mean? I.
