"To you good morning it's a it's a little early for me feeling a little rough around the edges but good morning Rick you're doing it remarkably well for first thing in the morning a specially after just having left aches and things about an hour okay doing well German it's almost like a great get together we work together respect each other and enjoy each other that we come together today for as I said information and opportunity coronavirus it permeates every part of our lives the people we know the people we love let's start with data information and set the table as to where we are and what Sir John Matthews for that info John give us a brief summary of where we are today in regard to corona virus well worldwide and the numbers keep going up with corona virus were well over five hundred thousand now approaching six hundred thousand cases worldwide in the United States of course the numbers keep going up as well because we have a number of tests being put out in the field and we're testing more and more people each day around the country here locally well over a hundred cases locally so far of corona virus the vast majority of them are on the island of Oahu over eighty now and the other islands Maui the Big Island clay also all seeing cases as well Dr Bruce Anderson had a press conference earlier this week with the department of health as saying that nobody had died yet of corona virus they had an initial report this past week that somebody had died which they found out post performance they did not they upon reviewing the data again they rescinded that so right now why does not have a case of death from corona virus but what we know about that we know about that we know about but we will continue to monitor that story as well now the coronavirus numbers are scary enough but what's affecting probably most people's lives because you either are in the situation or you know somebody in a situation are the unemployment numbers and they're just staggering in fact an article in the star advertiser on Friday talked about the fact that our unemployment fund the first one up now there's a safety net for it they'll get another infusion of cash but the original unemployed find is going to be depleted pretty quickly because of the absolutely staggering numbers that we're seeing here of people filing for unemployment just this past week nineteen thousand five hundred filed on Monday twenty thousand on Tuesday fifteen thousand almost sixteen thousand on Wednesday for March all the way through is about the middle to Thursday of this past week you had over eighty two thousand people almost eighty three thousand people file for unemployment in the state of Hawaii that is a massive number the comparison to last year this is a star advertiser reporting this eighteen thousand unemployed people for all of two thousand nineteen the entire year the entire year and March wait a almost eighty three thousand and those numbers are going to continue to come up as well we don't have a travel ban on the state of Hawaii what we have almost as close as you can get to one with a fourteen day quarantine so our number one industry sh almost practically shut down all the restaurants and bars because of the no dining policies have taken a severe hit they may have employees but a number of them have been let go at this time the the impact to the state in this current time period is absolutely astounding to see data wise right now every day in the news when I'm doing is here in the afternoon on cage creation across our cluster we have different stories of what's closing and how this is impacting people island to island to island not just here in a while who were were base but all across the Hawaiian Islands and people are scrambling to figure out exactly what they can do to either preserve themselves but also those that can provide those that can do things like take out meals that they can't afford that you know what can they do to help support local businesses so is unprecedented I know that we've endured was injured nine eleven we even during the two thousand and eight recession I go back to the days of desert storm when we began our military action in the Middle East and the impact but nothing nothing like this the unfortunate part is that this is a pervasive in all quarters it's not selective areas it's not one put it every single person which means that every single person regardless of their status is more than likely going to need some assistance now the data with the disease very much you know this is very much something that it can infect anybody but who it affects the most are those who are frankly over fifty usually over sixty years old and have underlying conditions in that way the actual disease does have a certain pool that it affects more than others although if you are twenty or thirty years old of course you can still get this but the most impact sourcing the most deaths that we're seeing are certainly in the older category but as far as the fallout from the disease like you were saying it's everybody it is everybody across the spectrum it is people that are working it is people that are not working people without kids people with kids people with kids have to figure out how to do home schooling plans right now to keep their kids somewhat up to speed with what they're supposed to be learning and there's a lot of parents who frankly are trying to scramble around just to you know get money or figure out how they're going to survive and so some of that learning may take a backseat college students doing all online classes it's everybody thanks for that John's number three in order to flash and that's you know supporting my cocktail supporting the weight is very important initiatives share about it please yeah and I mean everything that John just spoke to is why you know I heart radio and cage the H. R. have put this program together support eight await you can go to the home page of K. H. V. H. and check it out it's also support it away dot com it's a directory of local businesses that are open what services they have available these are all businesses they're operating under the social responsibility you know kind of guideline that's that's been issued obviously a lot of restaurants they're only doing you know take out delivery that sort of thing but there's a lot of other businesses that are still open to we'd originally created this concept with restaurants in particular in mind and also the fact that people need to eat but what we found is so many other local businesses reaching out to us and saying Hey can we get listed too so we ended up just saying listen any local business that's open right now we're going to create a directory of of we know what your businesses and services available on all that and then we've since added a now hiring category on the sport it away page because believe it or not some local businesses are hiring a lot of like year targets your Walmart's that sort of thing and then also you know domino's pizza hut a lot of food delivery businesses you know you've got your left and all that stuff and then health care businesses like Wilson care group largest home health care business in the state they're hiring literally hundreds of people right now some of those people obviously you need to be skilled nurses nurse aides that sort of thing but there are businesses that are hiring a lot of businesses that are hiring are taking people that they know aren't necessarily qualified for that particular skill set having said that you're also finding people that are used to making E. you know this significant salary that are having to take whatever job they can get it you know fifteen Bucks an hour at Walmart or whatever but that's better than nothing I'm we've also found a lot of people are looking for ways to volunteer and help support the community in other ways besides financial and so we have a volunteer page there now a lot of the local in particular that the for the food service charities whether it's white food bank all our meals on wheels that sort of thing need need volunteers right now and then speaking of the food bank you know they're always on the brink of halves of just barely meeting the needs of the hungry in Hawaii and right now there in their numbers are are doubling and they're gonna get exponentially bigger and our Ron Mizutani I had an interview with him the other day he said before the corona virus we were having to feed anywhere between fifty and sixty thousand keiki a week statewide and that number has gone way way up and that number in and of itself is staggering so you can go to our support eight await page and donate to our for our virtual food drive with that money going to Hawaii food bank and they their dollar goes a lot longer than your dollar my dollar because they're buying in bulk and also because they're such a big charity they get a lot of discounts that normal people don't so I don't think that it's you know that they're buying Melrose restore milk it safe way for you know twenty seven dollars a gallon yeah and that you're pretty close actually sent out safely we're talking with John Matthews and also flash Hanson of I heart media support eight await is our concentration today and again if there are businesses or individuals flash that would benefit from being part of this sow absolutely how do they how do they connect with you the if you go on KGH is home page and click on support it away there's a way that you can sign up right there you can also just message KGH on Facebook and as well as just email me directly that a quite honestly that's the easiest thing to do you just email me at flash it I heart media dot com where I've got different forms depending on what it is you're looking to do and some people are doing you know two or three of of those different things that we mentioned right the main thing obviously we have it this point over a hundred and seventy five close to two hundred businesses listed in our directory of places that are open and every dollar you're spending with these businesses are keeping their staff employed excellent when I come back in a moment flash and remind folks but on John's side the economy are you H. economist Carl Bonham recently made statements about the impact length of recovery it cetera cetera where are we in the news cycles specifically about the state of Hawaii its economy today and in future John well obviously the where we are right now is the point of of unknown at this point the unknown is after this goes away we don't know the length of time it will be a month two months however long into the future right now the current stay at home work from home order goes through April thirtieth but as the mayor said in the end the governor said as well you know we could be expects tended or shorten depending on circumstances from there how do we go up from essentially something none of us in our lifetime has ever seen with the exception may be of nine eleven and that is rock bottom tourism the numbers came out on Friday that it's down the the number of passengers arriving into Hawaii is down eighty seven or eighty eight percent compared to the same time landowners are priced by no surprise notions because you have a fourteen day quarantine on anybody coming into the state of Hawaii and nobody is going to you know dip despite whatever rock bottom airfare is they might be able to find very few are gonna come to Hawaii and spent fourteen days in a hell in a hotel room which is on an honor system by the way I don't well it's it's the enforcement is ridiculous but even moving forward yeah you can have flights for free number one who's gonna want to be in quarantine that long and number two very soon airlines are just gonna be shutting down they're not even gonna be able to afford to operate so even if you want to come here there's not going to be a cruise ship operation that's even open or or possibly airlines that are that are even you know available I mean the whole that the way that people get to Hawaii whether they want to get here not just might not exist for up for a window of time for a window of time and that's that's really the question when does this start up again and how quickly will it snap back to I I don't wanna say normalising normals the wrong word for it but how quickly will it snap back to okay we've got a fifty percent load we've got a sixty percent load we've got a seven seventy percent load those those benchmarks will be important to gauge and measure how fast of a white can get back up on its feet many smarter than I have made the point that well restaurants in and I'm not in the restaurant industry but of course I've heard through the years at restaurants operate on extremely thin margin and a number of them will they come back will they not will they benefit from the stimulus that was just passed on Friday or will they say we don't want to do this anymore there's a number of questions that are just kind of hanging out there and even at this point today on Sunday we're still kind of weighing what exactly the the future is going to be economically it really depends on how fast people want to resume spending activity once they've been scared this much and how fast they can get back to work restaurants in particular I I owned a restaurant for three years actually ironically apartment three and we actually opened in the recession of two thousand and nine my horrible terrible time to open but the best Run restaurants operate at a maximum ten percent profit margin it's it's a terrible it's the kind of business you get in because you're passionate about it yeah it's not you don't get in the restaurant business to make money that's silly so a lot of these business a lot of my restaurant friends you know owners general managers are they all want to re open but they're afraid that if this goes on too long they won't be able to afford to re open and a you know a lot of people in the.
