"So what's really exciting about open mind. Health in particular is it's really my first opportunity to kind of bring a team together of experts and kinda crafts things in coordinate things in the ways that i've seen and learned over the years that i find to be most helpful ineffective for people so that's one of the most exciting things a little bit more on Dr beach and working with dr beach. We work together in canada And i think some of what you're getting to is is he has an understanding. That's beyond just medicine alone. And i think really incorporates. What else does the person need. We worked in an inter inter interdisciplinary team of professionals that included People who have Who appears in candidates people would lived experience. Who work with the doctors to say. This is what the skies needing the doctor has his quaint. It's a It's not hierarchical article way of working. It's each has the same equivalent power with And i think that's some of what makes dr beach really different. That he's he just lives that way. Feel it's so sweet. Okay all right. Well this is stephanie. robinson. Okay steffie now. It's your turn to talk so tell us tell us about you and your background and then maybe how. You guys have connected. That would be helpful. I'm on stephanie. Robinson i am the chief of quality client experience with open mind health. I'm also a psychotherapist and executive in life coach I'm from candidates to live in canada. my work has evolved from personal experience. I have a brother who has schizophrenia. I've worked in addictions. I had a friend that i had lost to Heroin addiction and so it was you know trying to support her along the way while setting boundaries and trying to figure out. It shouldn't have to hurt this bad. That led me into doing trauma work in work with violence against women. I was a foster parent. Raised a bunch of foster kids That led me then to be working in Significant mental health. And i worked on act and teams. Dr beat tonight developed a fact team together which is a flexible of candidate treatment program that we wrote the standards for on -tario together so we've been working together for a long time that way also worked in women's prisons so lot within om violence against women issues of abuse trauma and addictions awesome. So let's jump right into it shop so stephanie. In and dodger. Beach stephanie. I'm going to direct them to you. Because i know it's been made clear to me before we started your the brains in the outfit and we'll defer to the doctor whenever we need some sort of a You know medical support peace. So how covid nineteen affected our mental health and addictions from your experience. And think you can start with that. I mean and that actually is the question. I probably have dealt so i think by the way i know you can handle all of these. I think i wanna i wanna i want you guys the i want to hear from both of you today because i think the fact that you together speaks volumes again about where we're heading and we're trying to do to help people because i think i've learned one size does not fit all. I've also learned you know working with veterans that the ptsd that come into the fold the family trauma that are issues and you know as a guy in long term recovery..

Everything had been reported in the median along the left side, hoping at this point from the look of the delay, easing that we've got all lanes open fifties, getting worse on the Bay Bridge West. There's a broken down vehicle that is in the far right lane starting to pull away with the tow truck. But the left X is also blocked. Only a center lane is getting by on the westbound span, but very slowly now that broken down vehicle is being cleared from the right lane, so hopefully you'll get that green arrow again very soon. "Members are the mission. It's 9 18 traffic and weather on the eights. Jack Taylor in the traffic center. Sounds like in Maryland right now in the Bay Bridge West, you have only a center lane getting by. I think the left lane had been closed for two way preparation in the right lane may have an accident or broken down vehicle of some sort, But the red X is up single lane gets by at the centre westbound on the Bay Bridge, East Man. You still got both lanes. You're in good shape the rest the ride to Annapolis and believe that we're super slow BW Parkway. Two spots. Both have accidents North bound after NASA goddard along the right side south bound near 32 along the left side Sounds like equipment on the scene. Beltway outer loop topside, Maryland after New Hampshire Avenue there along the right side of the roadway, rest of the ride toward Bethesda. Good to seventies. Fine. North and south found between Frederick and Elaine Divide. There is work north on to 70 epic Montgomery Village. It's along the right side, the mainline, really not causing much of a delay. Now closures remain from the storms yesterday. Coolsville roadblock between Lockwood driving Crest more Dr Beach Drive between Garrett Park Road in Stonybrook Drive Beach between for 10 and win Dale Road. Also, you'll find Slag Creek Parkway blocked between forest Glen wrote in Maple Avenue, all because of storm damage. Same in the district on beach Drive between Park Road and Blagged An avenue now in Virginia. The Beltway's quiet between Alexandria and McClane Traffic is moving very well. 95 3 95 66 running without issue or delay, looking just as good on the Greenway in the toll road. And moving very well on the George Washington Parkway plan on Crossing the Bay Bridge. Get current traffic in bay bridge dot com or 1877 Base Ban All electronic tolling is now live Get easy passed today. M. M. B. Melbourne some bill Medicare and our operation stormwatch coverage is there one thing in particular the people have been the most concerned about it seems like just take a look at all the information that we've been getting storm surge and potential beach erosion is one of the biggest issues along the east coast of the moment is there anything that people over and over again I've said to you that look this is what I'm I'm worried about as the storm gets closer closer to the coast haven't been through the ones we've been through would have been dealt with this time and time again on the space coast these folks I understand there's a lot of danger after the storm and you have to wait to see what happens before you're really get worried you batten down the hatches you wait and see what the storm itself does but then with power outages and flooding and displaced wildlife and other issues that can happen down power lines of the like. that's where you have to be really careful they're usually pretty good about that and that's per download the focus let's get through the storm and let's see what we have to deal with W. Now you get upwards of eight plus feet long relaxing pounds so you've both been probably watching the beaches really closely in a way differently than most people do and I'm wondering how you've seen things change population partially because we're such great beaches and every year Dr Beach comes out and says one of our beaches is like the best so naturally the people are drawn to come and check check it out more population gives us more issues. It's hard for a title they even come up and nast without somebody either disturbing it or at least see an on nesting. Some people are really good. What about it? Some people are not as good makes it hard for the turtles. There's people out there twenty four hours a day on the beaches nowadays. Have you seen some changes as well I have I'm obviously not spending anywhere near as much time out on the. Beaches as Joan his team what I can say I volunteered when I was in high school at the Florida Aquarium. <hes> I grew up watching Jacques Cousteau you hear all the all the messaging about you know saving the environment making sound choices about how you're living your life and the impact that can have and I think one of the one of the sparks of optimism is the fact that things have changed in the last twenty years. I think the health of the Bay I think assessment just came out recently saying that we're back to I think pre nineteen eighty or nineteen seventies levels in terms of seagrass coverage pollution. I think the things that we're doing while we're here in the moment may feel like we're not getting any headway but long-term these do make a difference. I think things have to have changed with the beaches to because we didn't know anything. It seems like in the seventies or the eighties the lights were wrong and we're hurting. The turtles. People were putting <hes> seawalls everywhere. They were cutting down the mangroves. They didn't understand the importance of dunes. All these things seem to have changed in the last several decades. I know there's a lot more people out air but are the beaches themselves looking better. Yes they are looking better. We have a whole group of people that go out every morning and pick up the trash on Saint Pete Beach. I'll get rid of some of that. Plastic Plastic <hes> were involved very much with the no straw thing so we got a bunch of restaurants and stuff on the beach to get away from single use straws and so we're having a lot of success with that the one change inch. It's the thing nobody wants to talk about you know and it's the rising sea level. We just lost half of our nest and we didn't even have a storm <hes> last week just because the water came up a foot wherein were in you know twenty years ago or fifteen now that wasn't a case where you have nets get flooded on a windy day and when they flood that kills the eggs not necessarily <hes> if they're inundated for more than several hours there's and it depends on how far along they are in the incubation period then it could we won't know till it's time for those nest to hatch but I can tell you right now that you know there's a bunch of them that are not going to hatch they were underwater because they were under water. Yeah and that's becoming a a yearly occurrence where before you would need a tropical storm or something to raise the tides up that high to influence you you know the nests. I know nobody likes to talk about it but it's a very important part of what's happening. You're nodding Ari. We absolutely <hes> you know we've finally gotten around to the place where we know how to protect beaches from future construction but a lot of places as those beaches start to shrink we can't march up the beach and give those animals more space. It's a finite resource and it's got to be shared by people and turtles when you mean because there's already the buildings there so you can't move the dunes back Joe. I want to know more about what you see out there on the beaches so the the female turtles come in generally at night to lay their eggs. Yes generally only speaking then for that or you you get there early in the morning. Occasionally we do see a turtle that still up on the beach <hes> finishing up not staying we'd see several every year hollow out a whole a shallow hole with their flippers and not so shallow how many feet deep with the Hobie Proxima linked to my arm yeah about yard to refer okay but it's not very wide at all. It's only you know six inches eight inches wide the opening and then show put one hundred to one hundred twenty eggs in that whole okay cover it back up over a backup and goodbye and had back and that's the last she sees of her babies. Yes okay so then. How long does it take for for them to hatch? It's fifty to sixty days. Normally you know we check them every day like I said to make sure nothing disturbs them then. We hope we did good enough job with the lighting that when they hatched they just all will head down to the the water now. It's pretty dark in a lot of the areas now so we're pretty happy with that good so I have seen I've never seen it in person but you do see these Docu- these heartbreaking documentaries where the seagulls are just picking off. The baby turtles and then things are eating them once they get into the water and crabs or grabbing them and you think how in the world to any of them make it though those are different species of turtles that actually will hatch in the daytime like Kemp's Ridley Turtles Turtles Hatch in the Daytime Olive Ridley's. I would imagine do the same thing but are mostly are loggerheads. It's at night and the birds are gone so they don't really need that much protection except maybe the crabs the ghost crabs use get one here and there. We're not really there when they hatch <hes> F- W._C.. Has New guidelines out the last couple of years in the old days we used to be able to literally have somebody setting near the nats or when it hatch we made share all the babies got to the water. Oh you would walk them down water something like that but those days are over and W C just wanted to be as natural natural as possible so we give them a lot of leeway on their own. If we get calls about turtles that are disorienting than we will definitely go out there and pick up as many as we can fine nine and then you know make sure they get down to the water but otherwise new they're pretty much on their own so ari out of one hundred eggs say how many are going to make it to adulthood pretty small fraction one in two thousand. I wouldn't and say one hundred more like one in a thousand really make it uh-huh but if you you are producing <hes> say six million loggerhead hatchlings in one summer the state of Florida Boorda that means twenty five years later you still have a six thousand new turtles coming into Nast and that hopefully is enough to offset the loss of turtles in that patched last year and that the population will increase so one thousand while it sounds like all that solo does it does but it is enough to continue the species so you're saying that maybe one in a thousand turtles make it all right. What are the some of the reasons for that will certainly the first couple years are really tough on them? We all know about the marathon race down the beach to the water what we don't see as much of that then those guys swim mm-hmm for miles through open water to get to the SEAGRASS and algae mats out there floating on the surface and they'll sort of living nurseries for all sorts of <hes> of juvenile ocean creatures and so they'll live there in that environment for a couple of years. We usually don't see them pop back up again so <hes> we'll see like Joe said disoriented. Turtles hatchlings they get turned around on their way to the water other than that most the animals that we see on the Rehab side are going to be probably three to five years of age before we we get is is on the again so these are just floating seagrass floating on the surface of the water like out in the oceans. These guys are out in in deep water open water offshore and the algae and seaweed will stack up in accordance with the current and that's were these guys will make their home. There's a lot of sealife there for them to feed on lots of small shrimp and crabs and fish that all use this space as a nursery that sounds so amazing to say yeah so they'll spend a lot of time out there and then when they're in a couple of years old they've got the strength to sort of move back in shore a little bit and start to hang out in places where unfortunately there's a lot more <hes> human interaction so that's when we'll start to see animals that get hooked fishermen at peers will start to see them <hes> getting hit by boats. Those those are a lot of the cases red tide exposure. That's primarily an inshore issue that we deal with <hes> how are they hurt by red tide so for sea turtles there obviously there swimming in it unlike a lot of the other mega-fauna Dolphins for example. They're big enough fast enough. They're able to sort of get out of that area. <hes> it doesn't mean that they're not impacted by but certainly you'll see the population move out of the way as it happened. Sea Turtles Aren't quite as cute in I think to those kinds of signs so there swimming in it. They're getting <hes> respiratory injury SRI. They're getting eye injury. They're also ingesting it and it is a potent neurotoxin and so probably the biggest thing that we get them in for is that they're pretty much unconscious so we get them in not just because they're unconscious but because while they're floating they're they're at. The mercy of anything that comes along so they'll get red tide affected and then they'll get hit by a boat chewed on by predators like sharks pecked out by birds <hes> and then they wash ashore and then what do you do well. It's <hes> it's a lot of T._l._C.. <hes> uh-huh so these guys may be pretty much unresponsive or comatose for a couple of weeks usually out a whole host of other problems. They've probably aspirated water because they weren't aware enough. Sea Turtles a remarkable they can float at the surface completely unconscious and still still well if there had the take breaths but we do see them ingesting or aspiration water and getting secondary infections the rest of it is really keeping them in a warm comfortable environment and supporting them <hes> with fluids and nutrition until they're able to clear the toxins from from their body and start to swim and take over those kinds of functions on their own. Do people still eat turtles. Sue was a big deal in he's at one time. Wasn't it yeah it's not legal in the United States. <hes> turtles are federally protected certainly other countries especially some third world countries <hes> the harvesting of turtles for food is is still pretty common practice. It was.
