among some of those tech names shares of meta platforms up 2.1% apple up one and a half percent Amazon up 2.3% Netflix up 2% and alphabet parent of Google up by 1.9% Recapping ten year yield 3.23% I'm Charlie Palatin that is a Bloomberg business flag All right Charlie thank you so much You're listening to Bloomberg businessweek watching us on YouTube Carol master along with Tim stenbeck So this story is among the most right on the Bloomberg today It's also on the Bloomberg big take It is an excerpt from a new book that's also featured in the new issue of Bloomberg business week which is add on newsstands You can find it online at Bloomberg dot com slash business weekend on the Bloomberg terminal It is riveting I read it in this week's issue of Bloomberg businessweek The story by Michael Smith and Jonathan Franklin it's an excerpt from the new book cabin fever and it describes the panic and despair aboard Holland America's MS Xander as COVID ripped through passengers and crew Michael Smith is projects and investigations reporter for Bloomberg businessweek He joins us via Zoom from Miami Joel Weber is the editor of Bloomberg business week He joins us on the access line from Brooklyn Joel I got to tell you reading this I felt like I was on the ship and I'm I mean there's no other way to put that if brought me back two years ago and just the terror and horror these passengers felt Oh man those early days of the pandemic and it's so associates with the story of the cruise industry And carnival and especially the MS and M and this book which were so proud of Mike about cabin fever really began with a business week story But when we got to do the excerpt we wanted him to revisit it and come up with something special So Mike tell us about the book and also the excerpt Yeah like you said it started with basically covering this story I was just fascinated by and horrified by it as an unfolded in the news and on our screens and then it turned into the excellent feature story we did for business week And that basically led to my friend Jonathan Franklin who I've known for a long time His agent called me up when he saw the story and he said you have to write a book about this It's just an amazing story It's COVID but it's also sort of a story of human survival on the high seas and its FiLMiC and all these stuff So he kind of convinced me to go for it and luckily you know I had Bloomberg behind me and they really accommodated me starting with Joel Webber So it started with that And I just found it to be an sort of a way to tell the story of what we all went through with COVID but just to the extreme Because that's exactly what it was You know this particular ship left South America on March 8th 2020 And about 45 minutes before it left port in Buenos Aires South America The State Department put out a warning saying people especially older people should not take cruises and they left port anyway and the world just started shutting down around them and then they discovered code was actually on the ship and were just stuck out on the high seas as far away as you can imagine from for most of the world As this disease just started picking people off one by one And it's just really incredible the more we dug into the what happened Just the individual stories of heroism and part of these crew members on this ship that are underpaid overworked and we're really just risking their lives to take care of what is basically a shipload of everybody's grandparents you know like really just vulnerable people especially then Who were just stuck in their cabins terrified and just waiting for this disease to come in and kill them by some unknown way Well Michael let me jump in for a second because I think what is always so good and it sounds like in your book the very the specificity and the individuals telling their accounts what they saw and this one excerpt that's in the book and in the magazine I should say you talk about this individual George walking into the pack kitchen of the cruise ship and asked in a booming voice what do you need And we obviously find out as you detail they needed a lot What was it in terms of the specifics that really just jumped out for you Well what jumped out for me was in that particular scene if you will which is all real is that he was one of about a dozen volunteers who were working on other ships and they put out a call you know we need people to come and help relieve this overworked and ever sickening crew on this other ship and just help them run the show because if not it's just going to be a disaster and the ship will not be able to function And so he was one of the ones who heated the call very courageously He knew or he suspected that he was getting into a situation where there's COVID although he didn't really know I think he sort of hoped it wasn't COVID But he just went for it and it's quite remarkable And the fact that the reason people sort of were just sort of overwhelmed by joy when he came in and said what do you need Is that they were at a point of desperation I'm talking about the people who are working on the zan dam who'd been fighting this for many days by then And the fact that someone from the outside world was actually coming on board at great risk to help them was just emotionally more than any of them could take And of course when he got on and realized how bad it was he started saying you know I should have listened to my wife because his wife is from Romania His job on this other ship called the ostrom was to run the shops on board like selling jewelry and overpriced scarves and stuff And he has his little kids at home back in Romania and his wife said are you crazy Why are you doing this And he's like I just got to do it And so one of the first things he thought of when he realized how bad it was was I should listen to my wife But he stuck with it And that's just that's what's so striking about the story to me is that you had so many people like that who were working that ship who really risked their lives And we're you know the we're will just of plunged these global themselves shocks into a chaotic they're not really driving situation that much that of was COVID the at economy that time at in this the world point You know we were all going If through this they're going to be responding to higher What oil I prices think and one higher thing that commodity we're using I prices think that the Yeah book I think sort this of is resonates the point where with I say almost hope everybody is not a strategy is because that that sounds it like a lot of hope takes you as back a to practical those days matter when you right were like scrubbing But your as groceries you look at it I with know you're an economist but antiseptic are the wipes markets or properly discounting the putting possibility them in the garage of a recession for a couple do of you days think Would you Have afraid they you got would get it now COVID from your box I of think serial so or And I'm something not quite sure if they overreacted right Which So now seems almost ridiculous not only because have we we know so seen much And we now saw this We're we all saw vaccinated this or most of you know us the are bond markets come down But very quickly to me it just like And so it was like that on I turbocharged think the market is it just takes pricing you back in to that time that we're likely to and have how a dangerous recession things were but it also But they might takes be ascribing you to a place too where much probability you're really happy at this to point survive in time They might be discounting the fact that Right consumers And that's the way Mike you know the other element that I just want to touch on because it's so central to the excerpt and it's sort of last question here The wrap up and only have a few more seconds but really the penultimate tension here is panel.

"On the fearless katsuaki hirano to go, but hirano has already reached his limit for radiation exposure. So izawa looks around the room and asks for volunteers. Not a single hand goes up. He knows what they're thinking. Radiation levels are rising, even here in the control room. They must be catastrophically bad in the reactor building. This might be a suicide mission. Isa thought he'd get a few brave souls, but he can't blame them for not stepping up. So he swallows hard, and before he can stop himself. He raises his own hand. I'll risk going. But I can't go alone. I'll need help. They all stare at him. But no one moves. Finally, a voice rises in the back. I'll go. Iza was heart leaps. It's an engineer named ogawa, and next to him, engineer katsuya Endo raises his hand as well. Me too. Suddenly, there are a dozen volunteers. Izawa closes his eyes and breathes a deep sigh of relief. Thank you everyone. Before izawa can start organizing the teams, hirano grabs him by the elbow. What are you doing? You can't go yourself. You need to stay in the control room. But I said I'd go. I have to. Don't be an idiot. You're the leader. If something happened to you, morale would plummet. You can't risk it. Izawa sees.

Bush presidency He talked about how he had to compromise his beliefs Because things were so extreme with the economy That's not when you compromise It's quite the opposite That's when your beliefs work better than any and when put to work implemented as policy They work better than any of the other ideas out there That's the whole point The status never stood down He wasn't going to get in the weeds with the media and try and be politically correct and engage with them it was about doing the work and it was in a critical moment in his state.

"Slash Charlie. Buster Douglas, that name might mean something to you, and he was known for one performance at one time that shocked the world. Buster Douglas was one of the let's say, most incredible sports stories of the last 30 years. A heavy underdog. buster Douglas was up against Mike Tyson. At a fight in the Tokyo dome, Mike Dyson bursts, buster, Douglas. It was a professional boxing match that happened on February 11th, 1990. Buster Douglas was a 42 to one underdog. Going into the fight against the great Mike Tyson. Now at the time, Mike Tyson was traveling the world. He was the undisputed heavyweight champion. No one would dare ever even cross the line of Mike Tyson. This was almost an exhibition match. But buster Douglas went all the way out to Tokyo to the Tokyo dome. And shocked the world, not just the boxing world. For a man that was so confident he didn't prepare enough. A 42 to one underdog buster Douglas defeated and beat Mike Tyson. Many of you remember years ago Appalachian states from North Carolina, boom, Boone, North Carolina. Where Appalachian state walked into the big House at the University of Michigan and defeated the Michigan wolverines in one of the most incredible football upsets in history. They hosted the Appalachian state football team in 2007, the wolverines were 27 point favorites. In the big house, an Appalachian state won. Upsets in sports are things that we all enjoy. They are nail biters of the Cinderella 16 seed in the NCAA tournament going up and beating a one seed? All the way from sports upsets in boxing from buster Douglas against Mike Tyson Michigan losing the Appalachian state. But what we saw in New Jersey everybody is greater than any of the sports upsets we have seen in the last 30 years. The equivalent would not be buster Douglas beating Mike Tyson. The equivalent would be Venus Williams or someone that doesn't even box coming in and beating Mike Tyson at the Tokyo dome. Now, I'm of course talking about our new favorite political story. Edward durr. We covered Edward Durer briefly yesterday. Edward durr is far from political heavyweight. Edward durr decided to run because he saw New Jersey becoming a socialist, left wing, cronies, one party dominated unrecognizable state Edward Durer's from the southern part of New Jersey. Edward der did not have political consultants that cut ads for him, Edward durd and not have big donors writing huge checks, Edward durr spent a $153 on his race. And he wasn't just running up against. A random, powerful person in New Jersey, it was up against the New Jersey state Senate president. Who's up against the person who runs the New Jersey state. Senate president, his name is Steve, Sweeney. Now, when asked, Edward der basically says, look, I'm just a normal guy. I ran for office because I felt that my state was falling apart. And he had this incredible quote that I want to read for you. About how, while other people were mocking him, and other people were sitting at home doing nothing. He showed up and knocked on doors. Edward durr was willing. To put in the work. Edward, there is a truck driver. Edward der is someone who put in the clipboard in tennis shoes type of work that is so necessary. And so missing an American politics, here's what he said quote, I walked three to four hours on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. I walked 6 to 8 hours. We usually had about half a dozen volunteers. I walked 6 to 8 hours. We usually had about half a dozen volunteers. One time we went out and we had 12 to 13 go out with us. He recalled proudly. Trust me, plenty of days I did not feel like walking. It was too hot. My ankles and my feet hurt. I'm not a young man anymore, and I have gout and planter, facile lettuce, and it was a hard thing. Now gout is no joke everybody. And the second most powerful person in New Jersey Steve Sweeney, unseated by a challenger that would have been considered a joke by the entire New Jersey ruling class. And just like when buster Douglas shocked the world with his ten round knockout of Mike Tyson, people don't even know how to process this in New Jersey politics. It is now this race has been called, Bloomberg dot com, New Jersey truck driver ousts Senate boss after spending a $153 on race. Play cut 89. Remember when buster Douglas shocked the world? This is an even bigger deal than that, everybody, because at least buster Douglas, he was a boxer. This guy is a truck driver who spent a $153. Play tape. History. He may not be covered. Edward.

"Spike. Since two thousand six it makes good on a twenty eighteen farm bill requirement that called for the usda to reevaluate the benefit amount by twenty twenty two and requires no new congressional authorization for people in families who have the good fortune of food security. This increase might not seem like that much. The usda estimates the increase will cost about twenty billion dollars per year based on conversations with about a dozen volunteers and people receiving food at three separate charlotte foodbanks in recent weeks. Any assistance is meaningful for a family experiencing food insecurity. Anything would help says felicia edwards who lives in charlotte and works part time. While raising her four children ages six four one and six months edwards said she was in the process of applying for snap benefits while visiting charlotte mobile food pantry with her four children and early september. The pandemic has made things even more difficult for many people. Jerome and camelia. Single terry say their weekly grocery budget has been in competition with new pandemic expenses like masks and cleaning supplies for edwards. There is a constant struggle to feed her family while paying bills and buying such essentials as diapers more than forty two million americans who currently use the snap program stand to benefit from the increase but experts say others who could benefit are unaware of the program at all meanwhile the programs complexity and the difficulty many people have signing up for it are enough to deter countless others. Here's what people experiencing food insecurity should know about the increase and how to apply if you might be eligible but haven't signed up what are snap benefits. And how do they work. Snap is administered by the usda and benefits are based on a theoretical grocery bill to feed a family of four and assortment of healthy but low price foods. This theoretical calculation has not increased since two thousand six and this month's increase represents the largest since nineteen seventy five the revised calculation also takes into account new dietary guidelines resulting in an acknowledgement of the costs of more fish and or orange vegetables that has been used in the past and announcing the increase in august the. Usda cited consistent evidence that previous benefit levels. Were too low to realistically feed people who rely on snap benefits with one study showing nearly nine out of ten recipients had reported the cost of healthy foods as a barrier to achieving a healthy diet snap benefit eligibility is determined by household size and income while there are some unique factors that are considered in some cases a family of four is eligible for benefits.

"I'm having my near death experiences with cicadas, and I'm actually cool around bugs. MEREDITH, not so much a little talk about cicadas coming up in a minute, but we've got a bigger problem. At hands, way air hitting all of the school board's around this area if you haven't noticed, Sadly, most of the problems right now seem to be in Northern Virginia, or we've just sort of shrugged our way through Maryland these days because we don't expect more. But we certainly do from some of the legendary school district in the Northern Virginia area, including Loudon County. Joining us right now is Ian Prior, of course, apparent that was targeted by the The chardonnay antifa out there in Loudon County. He's the kill founder of daily malarkey dot com, and now he's starting the effort to take back the schools. In fact, the organization is called in Fight for school dot com. Larry, you go fight for schools calm and that's where you can begin the process of recalling a handful of the school board members. I couldn't believe what you said was sent out on social media today in I should stop saying that, because every day I see something new out of Loudon County, and every day it shocks me, and I've got to stop being shot because this is just well, the new normal out there. What's this latest here? It Riverside school. That's right. Well, it's not just Riverside School with several schools or send have sent out email to students saying that if you witnessed an incident of bias, and you want you anonymously reported, you can enter it into this Google spreadsheet which will then be sent to the quote, office of Equity for Use in what? You know their conversations. I don't know exactly what they're gonna do with it. But Yeah. I mean, talk about some Orwellian stuff right there. This is my hour. Looking at this is my was there. They're trying to deputize Children to rat out either other other kids or teachers and use this thing for a bias incident that then gets reported and goes on permanent records there deputizing Children to become Critical race theory, Uh, police officers Well, that's exactly what they're doing. You know, parents would wonder what are they are they are parents gonna learn about, Um Is this gonna go on student's personal file? They actually going to do an investigation, or they're just going to accept the allegation. I mean, if you're doing anonymous tips, I mean, that's nothing better than you know, a comment on the news, All right, or I'll read it. You know, I mean, you need to get to the context of what happened. And by all means, if there's an incident where somebody uses slur That they should report that, but not through anonymous portals where you know the person being accused doesn't even have an opportunity to respond and provide context. I mean, we know what kids are like They do. They say stupid things. And they also like to take revenge on their friends for you, no lights or anything that they may be perceived as as you know, an insult. So here we're gonna have kids abusing this system, of course, to really try and cancel people that they either don't like or said something that they didn't appreciate you in prior. I mean, sadly, I'm aware of how you know rough. It can be with kids. Sometimes that goes well beyond you know, incidents of bias and E. I can see kids using this anonymous reporting of incidents as a way to bully other kids, but but letting the school district do the dirty work. Yeah, absolutely. I mean the office of Equity. If that doesn't scare you that the office of Equity is going to have access to all this information, and we don't know what they're going to do with it. I mean, what's next? Right? Are they going to encourage kids to Um, send in complaints about their parents, right? Are we going to now have kids through this school? Um, essentially dropping dimes on their parents. And this is exactly what they talk about where you talk about breaking up the event, the nuclear family or the family unit. I mean, there are so many different avenues that this Congar Oh, that air rife for abuse. It is really going to destroy a lot of kids lives. If some of this stuff is abused in the way that it could be, there doesn't seem to be any, uh, hesitation at loving county public schools and in the face of the outcry and the push back and and you and your organization and many other parents trying To speak some sort of sense to them. They seem to be going full speed ahead here or am I missing something? If you've got no, that kind of positive feedback, nothing. Now we call the Social Media school board. Because all they do is on social media. That's where they put out their comments. That's where they you know, they rev up their their chardonnay and TIFA. You know activists, but they don't actually do anything to respond to our issues right. They haven't held a town hall meeting like was asked for. Well, You know what they should do? Here's another idea for them. Why don't you take all the curriculum that's getting leaked out in dribs and drabs from all these parents and teachers? Just put it on the website Be transparent. Is that so hard for a government institution that we entrust with our Children to be a little more accountable and a little more transparent with what they're actually doing when we let our kids go through those doors. In prior has begun out in Loudon County. The fight for schools dot com website where you can join this and and move toward a recall of six I think you're going for school remembers. By the way I know that you guys were out there for the the drive up convention, the Republican convention. It looked like you have some good turnout gear hour the hour. The signature's coming It? Yeah, it was great. I mean, the first the first day we had roughly three dozen volunteers. And it was It was a crazy weather day Inhale, But we collected collected 1500 signatures that day, and we've got a bunch of volunteers going door to door. We probably collected Another 1000 since then, and we've got we're going. We're going to be putting out some some releases this week on where we're gonna be on Thursday, Monday, and then I would encourage everybody out there listening that has an issue with this school board to show up at the school board meeting on Tuesday. We're gonna be gathering petitions there, and we're gonna make our voices heard yet again. I'm sure they won't listen to us. But the rest of the country is listening to us. Yeah, they literally are And this is going to make an impact, not just in Northern Virginia. But I do believe this is going to catch on across the country in prior it's fight for schools dot com. Sign up, Just go there and put your email address so you can get updates. At least you know what's going on and always good to talk with you. Thanks for joining us. Thanks, Larry. It's 5 25. "Today includes a step that isn't sitting well with some hospital leaders. Disco Most Brian Calvert reports. It's a dramatic shift to healthcare is usually provided as the governor talked about vaccinating more people earlier this week, he included a new strategy frankly. There may have been kind of an attitude that will wait for the doses. Then we'll get appointments for people to come in. We need to reverse that. In other words, hospitals book your vaccination appointments. Now, assuming you'll get a supply of vaccine. If you don't just cancel the appointment, good discussion with the CEOs of hospitals about this subject. Perhaps Cassie Sour wasn't part of that conversation. She's the CEO of the Washington State Hospital Association. Our fears nurses could be pulled from other duties for canceled appointment and worse, she fears backlash from an already emotional public. Imagine having your vaccine appointment confirmed. Then. Once you show up, the hospital says we're out and you're gonna have to wait sour suggestive. "And after school boys and girls clubs Y M C A is really any Organization trying to engage low income kids and a sports activity. We want to make sure that the equipment is available to them free of cost because it's difficult when they have to go out and spend all that money. Let the last time we talked with six or seven years ago when you were just getting started with this, But I looked at your website. You've expanded Ah lot in that amount of time. We have? Yeah, we now have over 500 volunteers in our warehouse. Every year we collect over a million dollars worth of equipment. We distribute the same amount back into the community, the D C area and then in 2018, most notably He opened up a second chapter of the organization up in Baltimore. We've been able to really scale this thing pretty quickly, and it's not the formula for that has just been the support of the community. It's soccer moms and dads who can't afford to get their kids involved in sports and understand how important it is to the kids lives. They also understand First town how expensive the equipment is because they're going to the stores and they can afford it. That doesn't change the fact that when they walk out with a $300 baseball that they don't think Oh, my God, This is just insane. How? How expensive this stuff is so Support we've had from that community dropping donations off in our warehouse, volunteering in the warehouse, making monetary donations online running fund raisers. I mean the support The community has been Overwhelming. I mean, it's been amazing. That's that's been the single biggest factor in our such death. And you collect equipment as well as donations and and other things right? That's part of part of the process. Most people engage with us by donating equipment, so they'll either clean out their garage or their kid's closet at home and drop it off at our warehouse. We have a warehouse in silver spring, but we also have been Throughout the community where people can drop off if they don't want to make the drive. We have a lot of volunteers to go out and run their own collection drives. So if you think about like bar botnets projects Both scout Project Girl Scout Troop, National Honor Society. I mean, they're stone. There's so many reasons why a student locally would would want to get involved in get volunteer hours. And so they go out and they collected their in their neighborhood from their family and friends. They could have been at their school or their church. Their synagogue, you name it. We have usually like 2 to 3 dozen volunteers out in the community, you know, gathering up as much equipment as they can. And then the other thing is we go out into the community Every weekend and run collection drive, you'll see is that baseball League soccer leagues? Across tournament. We have been that sporting goods stores, ice rink, the soccerplex you name and I mean, we we we do a lot of Grassroots outreach and the communities were talking with Max Lovett, executive director and founder of Leveling the Playing field. So what are you doing in response to the covert 19 pandemic? Things have kind of changed for you right. Big time? Yes. So when, when covert hit in March, we shut down our operation completely. Warehouses closed really march April into the beginning of May and Purposefully didn't do very much. I mean, there wasn't a lot of organized sports. Everyone was done. Stay at home orders. Our focus was on elevating the voices of our nonprofit colleagues working on this with hunger issues and health care. Housing pee pee. And then you know, as we got into into the summer and things open back up, we had to think to ourselves. Okay? This is different, right? I think a lot of businesses had to look at this new normal. Figure how they could exist. Effectively in this new this new world. We're gonna We're in right now, and they're gonna be in for the for the next period of time. What we noticed was in the more affluent communities. You were seeing a lot of kids out in the park, doing their own drills right? Like we saw a lot of kids traveling soccer balls between cones or small groups of people throwing a lacrosse ball around. Throwing baseballs around stuff that you could do while following CDC guidelines, and we realize that many of the kids we work within our low in some communities don't have access to the equipment that they need. T o the We developed the LPs, the leveling the playing field sports kit. Which is a bag that has accepted cones, a ball a Frisbee, a jump rope in a odometer on been a leveling the playing field bag and the kids Now it's essentially like a take home kit. Whether they were doing virtual pro. Stay busy, especially with parents. You know, working. A lot of these parents work essential got immunity days, so the kids are at home. That was really important that they had, you know, physical activity that participants they didn't and now we now move the sports gets over to the school system for virtual CEO. Rightfully. Well documented. The challenges parents are are facing students are facing with virtual learning. Not a lot of people think about what that means for their these teachers, For what it means for PE class and what we were hearing in the spring. In this kind of happened all at once was that kids were essentially using pillows or balls of laundry as as like a ball for the drill that the P E teacher having them do it was just not Even remotely close to what he is supposed to be. And what we've been able to do. This fall is work with D C public schools in Montgomery County public schools to make sure that students You.
