"downey" Discussed on The Nick Taylor Horror Show

"Welcome to the. Nick taylor hor show jordan. Donny is the writer director of the head. Hunter one of my favorite horror moves two thousand eighteen and now streaming on shutter. What of the remarkable things about the head. Hunter with our source flow was considering the fact that it was an ultra low budget movie. It is extremely ambitious in terms of its scope and world building while still portraying a tightly structured and very intimate story about a medieval monster. Hunter this is a pretty fascinating balance. That jordan pulled off and one really worth studying. Everyone says your first movie should not be a period piece should not have elaborate effects and certainly should not include jordan did all three in the head hunter and he still kept the budgets super duper low and delivered a kick ass movie in the end. The head hunter is a serious case. Study for effective low budget filmmaking. Even if you've seen it it's really worth every watch for the fun of the movie and for observing its simplicity and elegance in terms of directing. And how much jordan was able to get away with for so little money. This is a really interesting conversation with some killer lessons in low budget filmmaking. So strap in and enjoy this conversation with jordan downey jordan. Donny how do you do good. How are you good. Good so i think one of the most And i know you've talked about this at length. But i think one of the for me. One of the most intriguing things about the head hunter was how it was such an intimate view of a larger world and in a low budget context. I feel like it's difficult to tip to pull. It is difficult to do something on a on a relatively low budget that has a big scale but a small scope. If that makes sense. I reminded me of something coin. Tarintino actually talked about it. I'm going to paraphrase the hell out of this. But he was talking about how there's a difference between directors who you feel like you're in good hands with them in other words you can. They've thought through a ton of things that never even appear on the screen and that never ever even come up in conversation in the movies dialogue. But you can just tell the world is thought out in very thoroughly understood in the audience consensus that even though you don't necessarily see these things you know. There's just an overall indication that this world is very thoroughly thought out and with your movie it felt like such a small glimpse of very very very large world. And go back to the tarantino analogy. I just felt like in such good hands. Because you just seem to thoroughly have built this world and i was wondering how had you do that. How will thank you. I mean i could go south pretty quickly right in just come across feeling random gripe Or just sort of like a bunch of stuff. That's just kind of shoehorned into something just because it was a cool proper cool. Set piece that you wanted to show off so to for you to say that hopefully then just means that those choices we made of what to show Built upon that larger world rather than distracted from the story in any way which is always the trick and the key but to be honest. I have a hard time doing anything other than that kind of world building. Just because the movies that i grew up you know really obsessing over as a kid Typically had that kind of Not necessarily camping but more of that..

Human Speech Evolution Gets Lip Smacking Evidence

"Imagine it jetting to a chimp in chimpanzee whether portray by REX. Lip smacking mimics the natural pace, acumen mouths talking. The. Findings are in the journal Biology Letters. This phenomenon has been observed before in other ape species who performed lip smacking movements at around five hurts, which falls within a range of mouth, opens, and closes characteristic of all spoken languages namely between two and seven huts, but this lip smacking timing connection had not been made in our closest. Relatives until now mouth and vocal signals with speech like rhythm, Hetero been observed in some monkeys in gibbons and Orangutans, one of our closest great relatives, so the last years had seen accumulating evidence that these rhythm other than something that only talking humans do. A Decade Of Watching Black People Die

"Family of Kentucky Woman, shot and killed by police is demanding answers. The former, his son both white are accused of killing the unarmed black man again with the breaking news for Minneapolis violent protests raged for a second straight night, following the death of George Floyd after being arrested by a Minneapolis police officer last night, protesters turned their attention to the city's. The last few weeks have been filled with devastating news stories about police killing black people. And what is sick is that these stories have become the kind of news that we in the business call evergreen their stories that are always relevant and always in season, these calamities are so familiar. This point they're details have begun to echo each other July. Twenty fourteen, a cell phone video captured some of Eric Garner's final words as New York City Police officers sat on his head and pinned him to the ground on a city sidewalk. I can't breathe. Or May twenty fifth of this year those same words were spoken by George Floyd. Just before he died, he pleaded for release, as an officer kneeled on his neck in pins of the ground on a Minneapolis City Street, so we're at the point with verbiage, people used to plead for their lives can be re purposed as shorthand for completely different stories and part of our job here coast, which is to conceptualize and make sense of news like this. But genus is hard to come up with something new to say you know things we haven't already said or things we have already recorded protesters saying when we were both in Ferguson in August of twenty fourteen after Michael. Brown was killed by the police or when we were in Baltimore after Freddie Gray's death. I spent the day with junior. High school kids in West. Baltimore where Freddie Gray was from on the first day. Let kids return to school after all the protests and I will never forget the eighth grade boy who raised his hand to ask. Why have white people been killing us in slavery and they're still killing us. He said that on Wednesday April Twenty Ninth Twenty fifteen. Since it's so hard to come up with any fresh insights about this phenomenon. We thought we would look back to another time. When the nation turned collective attention to this perpetual problem. Jamile Smith Senior Writer for Rolling Stone magazine. In when I was at the new republic. wrote an article entitled. What does seeing black men die? Do for you. It was published on April Thirteenth Two Thousand Fifteen. We get to see black men tortured or killed by police a lot more often these days. So, it's worth recalling why a generation ago. It mattered so much to see what happened to Rodney King. Now the story that might never have surfaced if someone hadn't picked up his home video camera. We've all seen. We have certainly seen the black and white photographs and videos depicting police abuse of African Americans. And we'd seen the grainy images of lynchings passed. "Off as a joke and it broken entertainment weekly. The Aerial Jackson was like I'll make that movie like yeah. Why not sure. He's doing some other things that they're Samuel Jackson. Trying to keep the off of this keying Thompson. Punching a snake is my favorite part. I liked that Keenan tops claims that he can fly a plane and all. He's ever done on Sony playstation any of the Games on there. That's how he flies really he can land the plane. What were they playing Top Gun on the playstation forgot about in real life all right. Let's see what you have to say on facebook. Mostly just rattle off the movies. You liked wait. That wasn't what we were supposed to go back to school like seven times and I did the script then. I ranked every ironman movie. Well iron man three. The adventures ones are in there too. So you know. This isn't a bunch Some spider-man's somehow incredible hulk still ranked higher than iron man to Lawrence. I couldn't think of a better actor to play Tony Stark Slash ironman his wit and sarcasm or what made me enjoy his character and persona the bond established with Tom Holland. The such a great match onscreen also the Sherlock Holmes trilogy him and Jude. Law had great chemistry. There three movies not yet. The third one is in production. Right now apparently. Lauren is in production with them. 'cause she's already seen it time. Travel time traveler. Why did she come back to twenty twenty then terminator? This Lauren? We worked with Dow Makes Sense. Well no why did you say oh? She was perfectly fine. Except for the time traveller. Maybe I was just disappointed if she was time traveler. Why she wouldn't let me know and take me whether I would like to leave twenty twenty. It's not bigger in their. Apparently one person Susan said love everything about our. Dj Are deejays my boyfriend. I love all the marvel movies especially not sure that out yet. Let me know Susan. The restraining order is coming in Key said great weird science. Chris says amazing actor and what a comeback Jennifer just says Weird Science Phil Says Kiss Kiss Bang Bang really did just leave me tell you the last movie titles Amazingly Tropic. Thunder is not listed once. And I'd be like that's what we refer me throughout the most in the script. Yeah and iron man Tampa because it's not politically correct guy. Yeah I know that's why it's not. They actually did an interview with Robert. Downey junior not too long ago and he said he doesn't regret doing the black face because it fits the role. Perfect it's perfect. It's a parody of himself and he actually said that the biggest influence on that role was himself and how some actress take things so seriously realized he was really parodying himself while making the movie and chaplain all over again. Yeah Yeah I mean that's the whole point of the black faces not like they just did black face duplex. No there's it's there's a greater purpose exactly and they address. How faces bad in the movie to pay attention to it? It's I feel like it's now getting hate that? Blazing Saddles does from people. Who just don't understand while they're blind saddles tropic. Thunder is a great movie. It's one of my favorites of Ben. Stiller movies is also one of my favorite things. Is Laura trying to organize the script or the show we all? Just throw it on the floor. Like it's organized. Tama says Chen Timothy. Says I Love Them? I'm fan especially loved him in Zodiac Oud. Yeah that was a good one. Terry love him and how he put his life back together and stayed sober on that note lessons. Zero is my favorite. It's been forever since I've seen less than zero. I don't think I've ever seen downing is a bj to somebody for drugs. Lizzy says considering all the drugs. He's done he has aged. Well he really has. Yeah not like Paul Rudd. Nobody ages like Paul Paul because he doesn't h no install read and Patrick Stewart are highlanders. I feel Maggie. Smith is right up there too old looking. I don't know if you can count Petra student that because that man has looked the same for thirty some years I know but when like when you think of Patrick Stewart and you think of I mean he's had occurred before that but his big induction into the like famous card this card and he's already old when he played the card play Professor Z. Y. Why and Z played. All of them and he was old their character. I know it's so tough to play. Professor actually. Just sit around in a chair and say that you can read people's minds. I think my favorite thing that I saw was like somebody was like it'd be so powerful with his mind. Why can't he make his legs work? I did see that though my favorite thing going back to Paul ride I saw earlier of the avengers age. Everybody looks old and show Steve Rogers at the end of end game. We like all the other avengers. Look at Old. And then there's power just like looking like himself you know it's GonNa Happen to Paul. Rudd is he's GonNa look at young forever and then one day he's going to eight Hundred Years in one day. So what you're telling me is it's the picture of Dorian Gray right now yes okay at finally. Mary says love him in everything from back to school to now is sherlock. Holmes is awesome. Go into twitter Oliver. Ya Says Gen Z. Teenagers discovering that Robert Downey junior did black face and tropic thunder and J. J. J. J. O. J. J. L. J. J. to John's US law to law. I don't know once played a character. That was the definition of extreme intentionally offensive. Humor are like the last kids in class. Learn that Santa Claus isn't real. He's not real what I guess. They're saying that the GEN Z. Late on the boat for discover their over downey junior did black face. What do you mean you? People really need to see the movie before you get upset that he did black face. I'm sure there's a lot of people never even seen food playing the dude playing another dude. Yeah exactly he's playing. He's American actor plan on Australia actor. Who's play around? Controversial treatment to die scares. Yeah I mean. The writing of that is just brilliant. Alone Day sparkle says. Hear me out. Tom Holland as Ellie in the last of us. Hbo Show is a big. Yes for me and Robert Downey junior as Joel would be a serve so I guess he's excited. I don't I never played the last of US video game but he wants those two characters to be in an HBO show producers Wifi says. I just found out Robert Downey. Junior is a cottage. Core is a cottage core AF and lives in a windmill cottage court af as an lives in a windmill. I don't think that's true. I don't think he does live in a one L. But though him Tom Holland's interactions are really good together. They did send a picture of Robert Downey junior standing in front of a windmill. So you know that's not photoshopped. Post a picture of the beer of the show that we do and everything that this time. I think we're just GONNA post a picture of Robert. Downey junior in front of a win That's a great idea. All right let's go to the phones brew. I enjoy late Robert Downey junior played. Dumpy makes me cry. The only other time I cry is when I accidentally listened to your show. But that's a different sadness can't be any worse than when he went on that tour of the office with us. Yeah he was miserable in real life to know at least it's consistent yeah so apparently As at least two thousand eighteen Robert Downey junior and his wife really do live in a late nineteenth century windmill folly originally built as a playhouse and later transformed into a full-fledged residence it resides in East Hampton goal. I take that back but do so WIFI still going to be the picture for this episode picture at actually already done the promos stuff. But I'll redo it because that's a great picture. You know all right. Well let's revisit the beer cooler. No NO WAY. Yellow Glider Way Way Way. Cool.

Good call right got it. Please continue interrogation of maker. Yes. Please continue the interrogation of me. You can't see podcasts world but I have my legs crossing a very Robert Downey junior way. Oh it's not an interrogation but more of the informal session discussed storytelling. Then let me begin highly now. This is a story all about how some drugs turned my life upside down. And I'd like to take a minute as you sit right there and tell you how I came. Back is the king of the Marble Airs. Nice word play. Shoot some B. Ball now school now but I know I love singing. Random SONG. Lyricist my thing. I know but it shouldn't be so back to me. I was born into an acting family. My Father Robert. Downey senior was an actor and filmmaker. My mother was an actress who appeared in a few of my fathers films. Oh family business. My family had a business. But it wasn't as good as my dad was a door to door salesman. Who SPECIALIZE IN ICE CREAM SCOOPS. That were different shapes. Some shapes were big sellers like the star in the moon's but most like the circle just didn't sell aren't most ice cream scoops circular. Yeah but dad had a hole in the middle so the ice cream would plop out would even make noise when it passed through the scoop pope. I'm not sure what's happening here. I don't worry about it. Most of her stories are like this. He's the modern day version of rose. Island don't you by the way Sabrina Junior drugs are bad and speaking of drugs is to do drugs? Oh we no no I mean. I used to do a lot of drugs. Oh we know everyone knows actually like I was high. The moment I woke up until I finally passed out again that night. Smoke on the water. That was the first thing I did. I smoked my joint when I was six years old. My Dad thought it would be a good idea for me to try it. But just thinking about what Barbie I want. I just wanted a new transformer. I was just hoping to get rid of the training wheels on my bike. Sabrina junior the training wheels came off quick for me. I started to enjoy my dad and a weird father. Son Bonding moment. It was a connection of love and abuse it later semi spiraling down in ways that I would never be prepared for. Drugs are bad Mr Hat. My father regretted later on but the damage was already done. Got You started using drugs. When did you decide to become an actor? It's the Family Business Laura. I'm sure he was born into it like being a door to door. Ice Cream scoops salesman. Yes in a way. My Dad gave me the scoop with the hole in the middle of it. That's deep. I actually my first movie when I was five. I played a puppy. I know it wasn't until I dropped out of high school that I started to consider acting as a real career choice so you moved to California to get. That film career started. No I was going to school in California at the time. At least you didn't have have far to go. You only had to go up. The road to start. Making movies are moved to New York City after dropping out in. Hope to make it there. Make sense to me if you can't make it there you can't make it any.

Avengers Endgame With Ann Hornaday

"Washington Post lead film critic and Hornets Talks Avengers. Endgame as it celebrates its one year anniversary the hype and the build up and all that I have to admit that I was approaching this with a little bit of like. Oh let's get it over with already enough you know. And then it really ambushed me emotion of it really. I felt like you know you're too young to remember this. There was a famous episode of the Old Mary. Tyler Moore show with chuckles the clown chuckles. The clown died and And she's the one crying hardest funeral you know. And that's how I felt like I felt like I was completely not prepared for how I would feel during the actual movie and I just think again the Russo brothers did such a good job of that really. They made it emotional and a I don't know I just feel like they hit all the right. Note the goodbyes. Were they felt real and authentic and bad and like the way you know. I don't know the whole thing just. I was really really impressed with the way they did it. I was surprised at my own reaction. I had not reviewed because I was called away for it personal reasons. I wasn't able to review or even fee infinity war when it came out the reviewer of record for that for endgame was my colleague. Michael O'Sullivan because I felt like he deserved to be able to To do this once he had done the first one But I was actually. I had my quibbles with Insanity War I didn't it? Didn't you know I had many more couples with that so I was coming in with such guarded expectations and then it just completely impressed me. I just we could kind of talk about this. But there were so many scenes that just were just so many men between characters and between the characters and figures from their own path. That just got me. They were really really beautiful. You know when marvel does So well is to balance the humor and the action and the drama. Where it they just they have it in the right lane where it doesn't sway too much either way were gets too campy or too serious. They have a successful formula. Dc should not try to replicate it. Because they're really just works for Marvel because just the way their brand was from the beginning. I totally agree and you know I guess looking back and I remember you know feeling so when Ironman came out thinking Oh thank goodness. They were not taking it so seriously. After all the you know it was right after the Nolan Batmans it wrapped up and I thought those got way too heavy and way too dark and Kinda just self serious and then here's this Brett. Literal breath of fresh air and it was Downey kind of it was sort of wrapped up with his own personal story of redemption and recessive. Like he it was you know and and so there was. It was just so good to see him again and just doing something so well in having such fun and bringing his great great talent. He's such a gifted actors such a gifted or and you know. I don't know I just felt like that movie was so symbolic on so many levels and you're right it just started it. Just set the tone perfectly you know and then they manage to kind of carve out these really specific world for these characters so those captain America movies are their own little thing. You know the store Ragnarok did a stunning job of marrying the talent and the writing and acting and it all works. You know in your right. Dc SHOULDN'T I hope they don't try to replicate it. It's it of its own zone. Look for Endgame. Wherever you get your digital or DVD content and definitely read and Hornets at Washington Post Dot Com for bite. This is Tony Tiller.

"Man, Robert Downey junior. John Fabra directed the first two I meant. Remember so distinctly two thousand eight. Battle that was going on between John Farrow, who directed the iron man movie and marvel movies when Fabra wanted Robert Downey junior to star in this movie Downey, who would do you remember? He's completely turned his life around. But back in the day at a history of drug abuse had a history of trouble with the law was not the most reliable person in the world, great actor, but not the most reliable person in the world, and pharaoh fought and fought and fought and fought to get Robert Downey junior that role which really turned his career around turned his life completely around when I talked with them both on the red carpet last night. They talked about it. I remember talking with both of you before iron man came out about. Your life and what you went through because you had such faith in the advert for that role now, look, counting a genius. What town eleven years later. Yeah. And now it's yeah, I, I think the ironman, Arcus complete and he's done us. All proud. What was it that you saw though that I mean like you really insisted that you needed? I asked myself at every day. You know, in success, search rewriting history. Let's be honest here. I did him a solid. True. But the other funny thing is and the reason.

"Downey's into it. The kids. Three. Walsh down away. We're gonna finish. High-school college pros never heard of it. The Josh situation. I don't think our team now factor. Never met George personally. Hopefully, he can work Hartman and helping us. Role that you could find himself on the team. This is after hours with Amy Lawrence. Week two defined by ear reconcilable differences, and those breakups the both the Mickle ones and the unceremoniously dumping what? That was my theme for my latest weekly football column. I know a lot of you have read it already. It's pinned to the top of my Twitter account a radio. It's also on our Facebook page after hours with Amy Lawrence. And I don't know when it came to me, I was still I still thinking chewing over various topic ideas as I went to bed on Tuesday morning for a few hours. So I usually get up around lunchtime way earlier than normal on Tuesday, and I start to write. And I think I woke up to go to the bathroom or something. It was like still another ninety minutes before I had to actually get out of bed, and it dawned on me. We had molten people. Multiple scenarios multiple team and personnel situations in week two which resulted in divorce of sorts breakup. The two parties going their separate ways. And do you know in pro sports, there's always going to be irreconcilable differences? And so I felt like it was a fun fun theme to tie all of these stories together. As you hear Hugh Jackson talk about Josh, Gordon and the end to that relationship in Cleveland. You hear Lorenzo Alexander describe his feelings about volunteering Davis and his abrupt decision to retire in the middle of a game. And then the adventures in kicking Diego Carlson Zan Gonzales both out of jobs the Vikings and the Browns radio networks. And so you wanna know what I think about the Josh Gordon trade, the volunteer Davis retirement the adventures in kicking from week to well managed to tie them all together in one column air reconcilable differences. I mean, I told my mom, it's my NFL masterpiece. I of course, was laughing when I said it, but I'm actually really proud of this. I had some I wouldn't say it was writer's block. It was more like a writer screen writers pick. It was a writers hurdle of sorts. But once I started writing it'll be about ninety minutes of staring at the computer trying to figure out how I wanted to start the column and once the first few lines were down on the screen that I felt like everything else flowed. Pretty well. So yeah, if you're interested in my opinion of the Josh Gordon to New England trade or volunteer Davis retirement or the the adventures in kicking it's all in there. So you can check it out. And now, I would appreciate it. If you would check it out and give me your feedback..
