Author Walter Jon Williams Discuses Making the Switch From Historical Fiction To SciFi

"How did you make the switch from historical to science fiction Oh that was easy by the historical The market for historical fiction in the united states completely collapsed About may of nineteen eighty two. And so what i plan is attend book series became a five book series And so i spent a desperate six months writing proposals for things that didn't sell And it was across the spectrum. I've read proposals for mysteries for historical Spent not for science victory A and everything but category romance. I think and And none of them sold. And then science fiction proposal that i had written some years before so and so i became a science fiction writer and the science fiction proposal had been bouncing around a publisher to publisher without being read I it's kind of a fascinating saga. But i was probably too long for this interview But certainly explains how publishers can screw up repeatedly and landed at tour books and the editor at that point jim bain and there are only three people in the office there was time dougherty who was the publisher jim in the editor and then those misses dorothy who ran the was the accounting department And now tories. The largest science fiction publisher. That doesn't run like that anymore. But jim bane read the proposal i bought it and it and although it had been on the markets or two or three years it actually sold to the first editor who read it. How did it not get rid at the other places that it had been Well there was a lot of mergers going on in publishing as there is now And so you say it. I don't call the exact sequence but you know it was sent to eight and susan. Allison who was the editor at ace left ace to go to berkeley. And until she was replaced they put buying hold so then it came back and then it was sent to berkeley and the decision house at berkeley and and then berkeley acquired as and suddenly they had too many manuscripts sitting in the office. So another buying hold wet. And then it went to david hartwell at times scape and it was lost in the mail room for about six months and by the time that was discovered they had put a buying hold on and and so it just kept bouncing off of these things till it actually went to an editor who still had a publishing schedule to fill up. That must've been satisfying when it finally sold rate really relieved because i was beginning to look in the help wanted section of the paper so that i could make my rent and suddenly although it has to be said that the science fiction sold for a lot less money than the historical fiction here so i was It took me a few years before. I i could reach my former miserable standard of living from from where i was merely tour instead wretched poverty. Yeah i can

Kevin Feige's 'Star Wars' Movie to Be Written By 'Doctor Strange 2' and 'Loki' Writer Michael Waldron

"Kevin feige his star wars stuff he was. You know there's always news about him. Doing star. wars movie was as dream. Kevin feige the the leader of marvel. He will be doing a stars movie and it will be along with doctor. Strange to doctor strange in the multi verse of madness Writer michael waldron who. We found out falls upon us on twitter. I don't know if your listener. Mr waldron who also is doing loki. Assure star wars movie with kevin feige listener. Let's let's get him on the pot did bring him. Dougherty to is a producer. Let's don't take my avatar walden joke either. So we we saw today. I don't know if he's barstool fan but yeah. If you're a listener go please come on. Let's talk about this. We'll talk about anything. But he's a star wars movie tapped to right. He's got a big deal now. Overall deal with disney obviously that's three separate entities for disney awesome. Good for him grads to that And then of course kevon foggy called the see him doing a star wars. Always kinda rumors could kevin feige takeover kathleen kennedy ever step down or she just kind of ran out of interest in doing. It seems it's more fabric baloney thing that's going to happen. Seems as though they're the ones who are going to be kind of leading the charge leading the way though catherine kennedy still there obviously as they've Just completely overhauled. How they're going to look at star wars mostly through series now with some movies And the other star wars news. This this is more of a rumor. It's been shot down that route donor. Junior won't play admiral thron however they've said that robert junior has been looked at for a star wars role in the future which makes sense because now stars and sitting that marvel thing with there's so many future properties they're gonna probably have some actors and actors that people are like. Oh that's that's quite the big name That would be a big one forever. Junior joining star wars would be quite the big name and actually. I don't think he would be a great thrown thrown of an intriguing. I still think. Speaking of the mickelson's i still think wars. Nicholson just play the character. He voiced willie because he was just the perfect of i can't think of another thrown voice But to cool pieces of star wars news here both marvel related. I think we should call them I think what a coin now for. This is the f. Cubed baloney favreau and fi. so the f. cubed alliance i think is gonna make a lot of great stores content in the future and i think that the one thing that Foggy is really going to add to this. As far as the stars movie universe cohesion right. The vendors undertaking is an insane thing. Really in retrospect like we look back on him. Like i made a bunch from the cool right but like to kind of loop together. All his moves into cohesive matter and not only that but like kind of build and make the franchise so much better as went along. I think is extremely impressive. And the fact that he's able to make these movies without feeling superhero fatigue is also even more impressive. And that's where. I think marvel in and star wars are kind of in the same lane as far as like you know when it will. When is it too much like when you down content. I think he he knows what he's doing. In that

Joe Exotic wrote Kim Kardashian a letter begging her to ask Trump to pardon him

"Joe exotic had written to kim kardashian. And i'm totally not surprised and i honestly thought that that would be his tactic to try to get out of jail honestly. Didn't we say that before. Like didn't we say how funny would be if that happened and then it actually happened. I feel like we did. I feel like we talked about it. And then when i was watching it it's like deja vu right like i was sitting here watching and i was like. Oh wow i feel like dougherty happened in life right. we did. She say that it happened or it came. How how did you find out. Yeah so it was on. Et and it just was saying that Et had obtained the letter from the tiger king and that He had just to her trying to get a presidential pardon from donald trump. And and the letter said i know you have never met me. Never want to but i do believe However i do believe that you hold the values of our justice system dear to your heart. I am writing this letter. Not as joe exotic but the person. Joseph malegaon passage asking you to please help me by taking just ten minutes of your life and placing a call to president trump to look at my two hundred and fifty seven page pardon. It's all the evidence that i'm innocent and i asked him to my part into. I can return home to my husband dylan and to my father so okay question i. It's been so long since i've seen it all. What is he exactly in jail for. I don't know abuse. Because i feel like what he did was kind of animal abuse. It definitely was neglect and Yeah it just says that. While he was serving he serving twenty two years because he was convicted of plotting like a murder for hire. Oh right that's right that's right okay. And so then it said in his letter is that i have lost. Fifty seven years of work mizzou. My animals. my mother has died. My dad is dying. And i've been taken away from my husband who i loved dearly. Everyone is so busy making movies getting interviews selling stuff and dressing up like me that everyone forgot. I'm a real live person imprisoned and kept from even telling my own my own story for something that i didn't do so he was just asking him to give him a phone call and just promising that no one has to know that she even called

Hamlin, three time Daytona 500 winner Of the contenders for this year's Cup title, made the announcement Monday on Social media. It will be a single car Toyota entry aligned with Joe Gibbs Racing. As for the driver, Hamlin said. It was easy. That's where bubble Wallace comes in. He will Dr Hamlin's entry into NASCAR, but back to the ownership. There's been speculation for months that Hamlin was organizing some sort of one ownership group. ESPN is Ryan McGee. How in the world is Michael Jordan End up Co owning a brand new NASCAR team? Well, it's not as long a walk as you might think. First of all, Denny Hamlin and M. J R Boys, They have been forever how that happened. Denny Hamlin is the Jack Nicholson of the Charlotte Hornets. Brad finally listened Denny because of bubble Wallace and the attention the Wallace has received this year and what M J sees is a possibility. To literally change the face of NASCAR. Hamlin expecting NASCAR's business model to become more favorable for team owners when the next Gen car is released in 2022. Illegal Raves Fill 'Cultural Void' in Britain Amidst Coronavirus

"The night time economy has been hit hard by the pandemic nightclubs have been forced to close putting deejays and promoters out of. There that just because the clubs are closed, doesn't mean the party's destroyed. In Britain legal raves are enjoying something of a revival. Frankly right throughout Britain for the economist, the met police has recorded more than thousand raves in the last few months and many people are saying this is kind of a throwback to the late eighty s and early ninety s back. Then illegal acid house parties started happening all over the country. What are these raves actually like the traditional stereotype, his house techno music taking place in an abandoned warehouse or something things are a bit different. Now over the summer at least they've tended to happen in big outdoor spaces, kind of in the middle of nowhere, and the kind of music really varies depending on the event to so now do still play House and techno, but also are and be drum and bass a few weeks ago. There was a big rave in a tiny Welsh village called Babylon three and a half thousand people turned up but it's really all because of the closure of nightclubs. Choose to the pandemic lockdown as revive that spirit of acid house and really hard and Ravers who have nowhere else to go have turned to illegal parties again, and he's the revival of raving entirely result of the pandemic largely. But even before the pandemic rates for making a bit of a comeback covid of accelerated that trend, the revival was a result of expensive rents in big cities, which made it harder for nightclubs on cheap nights and also precarious operating licenses to big venues of how to pass that cost onto clubbers entry to print works, which is a big factory turned club in southeast London. Forty pounds just for a night and drugs and much less tolerated to oversee an illegal rave while they're much cheaper because have to deal with licensing and venue costs, and also there are no rules because it's illegal he can do whatever you like these ours you say illegal raves. So how the authorities cracking down on them authorities are having a really hard time trying to stop them because they will happening at such a low level. It wasn't too much for problem of there being A. Resurgence. Now, the approach, the the police and the government seems to be taking is deterrent in recent weeks new finds of being introduced by the government of up to ten thousand pounds for the organizers of these parties. But the big fines aren't having that much of an effect because it's very difficult to work out who's organizing them in the first place and that's because they're so secretive locations are often kept quiet until the last minute and even then details only shared with a ten dis. Through. Private channels like what's happened instagram messages, which is actually quite similar to the nineteen eighty s and ninety s when people would have to phone number from a phone box to find out where a policy was happening all the legal alternatives for UK Ravens than there aren't really at the moment. So in recent weeks, some music events have started up again but much more tame that kind of socially distance concerts happening in traditional venues, some promoters have tried to organize legal socially distance raves. I spoke to one organizer who said he put on the first, which is very early lockdown. He had seven hundred and fifty people applies account but could only let in forty people even then the police still turned up and try to shut it down until it was explained that it was going on legally this week actually new restrictions which limit social gatherings are the indoor or outdoors to six people have come in making it even more difficult to organize one of these events safely and legally. Six people doesn't sound like much of a rave. Is there a safe way to do this independent nick? Honestly not really it's obviously very hard socially distant set arrive. There have been the helping of criticism within the music industry of so-called Plague Raves in countries where venues have reopened as they haven't in Britain yet nightclubs have been criticized on any kind of events at all contributing to spikes in resurgences in the virus. One case of this is in south, Korea which did. Very well, it containing the virus. But when things thought reopened a number of cases with trace back to to some nightclubs in Seoul and that led to a huge amount of criticism within the press and in society as well. Just dougherty runs legal acid house parties in London, and he's one of the many deejays who calling people out for throwing playgroups

three three all the best podcast always free this is just one of over twenty five thousand podcasts available on the I heart radio app and now back to the part time genius podcast you're listening to part time genius and we're talking about the heyday of breakfast cereal you know when kids became the target market and nutrition kind of took a backseat to things like marshmallows and prizes and in speaking of cereal box prizes you know those were another way that Kellogg's tried to attract kids to cereal in the pre sugar days in nineteen forty three the company started putting pen back buttons inside boxes of their Pepsi Ariel so they started with a series of thirty six pens that featured World War two squadron insignia from the US military and this was before switching over to fictional heroes like comic book characters doesn't doesn't some of the earliest in box prizes we know about but if we're talking buttons my favorites are the earth called for president campaign buttons they were giving out during the Clinton bush senior campaign do you remember those second Stever family I can't say I remember running for president what what serial was that close he was one of those short lived novelty cereals across after a few months and then disappears like basically it was a sweeter version of chairs but last year with a banana and strawberry flavors but obviously we're getting ahead of ourselves with all these in the box buttons because Kellogg's actually got into the prize game long before that in the earlier days the prizes or premiums as they called in the industry we work in the box at all and as far as we know the first prize used to market sailed with his nineteen oh nine children's book it was called the funny jungle and moving pictures book and it was given to customers who bought two boxes of Kellogg's corn flakes out there participating grocery stores after a couple years of course Kellogg's decide to stop handing out the books on location instead offer them as mail an offer and within four years the company distributed two point five million copies of the files that can seem like it was obviously a hit with customers so Kellogg's kept releasing new additions and they kept going on with jungle and books all the way up until nineteen thirty seven I mean I guess that's pretty cool but I have to say I was never a fan of those Malin prizes I mean I was all about the instant gratification you know want to dig in there like it elbowed hokum class or something and just be able to like fish around and find that cellophane bag yeah then you gotta eat the cereal dust off your arm but those are definitely the days but I never really minded the mailings like I think it's partly the joy of receiving any kind of mail as a kid the fact that anyone was sending me anything was exciting enough even if I had to save up like a bunch of box tops and wait six to eight weeks to make it happen though that was mostly dying out by the time we were kids I I don't remember doing it a few times but you know that the real reason the cereal industry stepped up its game and then the prize game specifically in the nineteen fifties is is pretty interesting and it's it's thanks to this invention of what was called the screw injection molding machine and and and that's what made plastic prizes faster and cheaper to produce and this wasn't the only time the inventor of injection molding his name is James as Watson Henry would lend a hand to cereal prices so the nineteen seventies Hendry's developed the first gas assisted injection molding process and this is what made it possible to produce these finely detailed hollow plastic objects you know the ones that environmental groups love so much this could cause even more and pave the way to a golden age of these and box cereal prices that explains why so many the cool prizes I found were from the sixties and seventies and yeah F. course I'd be remiss if we didn't mention the boatswain's whistle that came inside the box of cap'n crunch in the early seventies offer talk about things we'd be remiss not mentioning about captain crunch what about genre flick crunches stinky barefooted rifle for an icon with your with the story obviously there was was this like a really high fish little whistle and the boatswain's whistle was one that was historically used on naval ships when commanders need to pass orders to the crew but couldn't be heard because the waves are whether or whatever and these days it's mostly use enable ceremonies button captain crunch's case it turned out that when you covered one of the whistles holes and blew it produced this frequency of twenty six hundred hertz which was the exact tone eighteen T. used to control its long distance lines and basically this legendary hacker John Thomas draper who is also known as captain crunch crunch crunch man he learned that you could use when the whistles to hack the phone system and get free long distance calls that they figured it's why that old hacking magazine was actually called twenty six hundred and then why Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak even tracked down the whistle and built a box that replicated the frequency to try and prank call the pope and a lot of that has a love that they pretend to be Henry Kissinger and it almost got there until this like suspicious bishop caught on lake and and then the prompt and get on those pesky bishop you know well injection molding allow for all kinds of awesome plastic toys you know some of the funniest ones I came across were actually even like metal or some of them even paper like in nineteen fifty four Wheaties gave away these manager state license plates and they were made of solid steel and you got one in each box but you could also buy them in four sets of twelve by mailing in a box top and a quarter of what being quarter and that would be the only hitch to this was that Alaska and Hawaii had not yet become state so they're actually only forty eight plates and all and so do you think people are like test when those two states got statehood a few years later and suddenly the collections are incomplete well actually post cereals did release a set of of the full fifty later on but apparently we still gets letters about the original campaign today so maybe there's still a few determine fans out there just pestering them about their missing plates or something I hope so but one of the most unique prizes I read about with this paper prize it was a detail one inch of land in the Yukon place as cereal company was giving away land by the engine it's a great idea to raise a Quaker oats sponsored a show in the fifties called sergeant Preston of the Yukon your adversaries are present in the Yukon race and this was their way of linking the show to the product and full disclosure this is a male in prize but this one was totally worth the wait so for just a single box top kids receive a deed for one square inch of the nineteen acres of you cut territory that quicker purchased and then actually purchased this from the Canadian government for a thousand dollars the promotion was this massive success and quicker she sent out more than two A..

Human compost funerals 'better for environment'

"They say for every person whose body composts rather than being cremated or buried a metric ton of carbon is saved from entering the environment involves taking a corpse and allowing natural microbes to break down the body turning the remains into nutrient rich soil here tells more about this is Caitlyn Dougherty she's a Los Angeles based mortician and death theorist welcome back thank you for having me back it's an exciting time to be into well yeah so clarify this process how does a work this body composting process it's very similar to what would happen in normal human decomposition in the soil it's just an accelerated version so we all know that burial space can cost quite a lot of money especially in a city like Los Angeles and the idea behind the composer human composting is having a center where families could come and the process of decomposing body would just be sped up a little bit and brought down to natural soil which could then be used to potentially grow things and grow a tree near coral blush it's very popular to think about becoming a treat now because I think it really speaks to our fears of climate change and our desire to become more a part of the natural world if those are your values in life I think the process like composting to recompose can really reflect that then in your test so people might have a visceral reaction to this and think wow that sounds kinda and disrespectful of the human body that we're not just a bunch of you know vegetable scraps in the compost pile first of all it absolutely depends on your point of view whether or not you think this is the most magical news you've ever heard decomposition and death is always a little messy cremation is burning a dead human body embalming is putting chemicals cancer causing chemicals into the human body alkaline hydrolysis which was just legalized two years ago in Los Angeles is putting potassium hydroxide and high heat water to do all the human body every method that we currently have to do something with the dead human body or something must be done has an element of the brutal to it if you choose to make about the sensationalist headlines okay so walk us through what would happen like if you were interested in that and someone you know dies and that person wants to be composted then what happens right I think it's three minutes between the state who who designed this method has actually given so much thought the idea of modern rituals and morning and the way that we more now in the twenty first century and the idea is to have these buildings these centers they're they're constructing one now in Seattle where was legalized last year and it would be a place where you would come and the family would be very much involved with this process they would come they would be able to sit with the body be with the body make some final ritual you know help wrap up the body maybe even put them in to the wood chips pour some water on top just just feeling like they are very much a part of this ritual on the part of this end of life and then it would be a certain amount of time and maybe maybe a month maybe a little bit longer and then they would be able to come back and either the soil could go to places that they have set up for soil to grow like forest that were pre designated or you could take a symbolic amount back to your own garden if that's meaningful to you it would be quite something to see a tree growing and you can look out your window and see that tree and think well part of that tree is you know my family yeah if not and to be clear date the way that they treat the compost that comes at the end of this process is the same way that you would treat cremated remains in the sense that it is not human remains we're not talking about pieces of mom in the complex the most the thing that really interested me about this process from the very beginning years ago was the idea that your microbes in your Adams and everything in your body completely transformed during the process anymore no longer human all you literally become the soil you're no longer just mom in some soil you become the soil so it would be totally safe and totally illegal if this bill passes to help some of the soil because it's not mom the same way that you're cremated remains are inorganic material they're not mom so it's gonna take awhile before this is past if it is passed and becomes law is there anything to do in the meantime that is environmentally conscious yeah there's there's lots of options green burial is it is a fantastic option which is just the body being put straight into the earth and in many ways what we're talking about composting is what would happen in green burial it would just take a little bit longer and you wouldn't get any of the soil back after the process it would be a grave that stays there forever there's also the option of pretty soon hopefully acclimation or alkaline hydrolysis which is finally it was passed two years ago but it's just now becoming legal this year in California which again is high heat water that dissolves the body which is an alternative to cremation and just be be open minded and interested as I said at this interesting time to be in death we have these new options and we're finally getting options for people who are more environmentally minded who want something different for themselves who want something looks expensive and perhaps the traditional funeral industry has been offering them and they're finally being heard and a bill like this is really exciting for that reason okay Lang thank you thank you so much that's Caitlyn Dougherty she's a Los Angeles based mortician and death

Z. brutal and that and that it doesn't matter if if you like Rush Limbaugh do you want the man to have can't you feel good about that and the Democrats didn't you know work respectful of this man has cancer I suggest that's just a real yeah I I I wouldn't wish cancer and anyone Ellen anyone anywhere at any time for any reason what does it take it is it that you think that the camera is going to be on you if you're respectful and and your your constituents I can't believe they applauded Rush Limbaugh no no it's fighting cancer we wish you the best of luck it doesn't matter if you died is it's probably and you can't risk from your constituents I assume their constituents on like that I don't know it's just a it I I went with it crazy just absolutely great I've got I've got more to get into on Russell Russell I mean I could do it now I can do it now if if if you are a pretty sorry because the question is what do you think what do you think of him getting the presidential medal of freedom because you asked me that before we go on the air right so are you asking what I think of him getting the metal or when I think of him getting the metal right there and then I no problem with him getting the metal I just to give it to bring the say the union felt a little weird all I'll say two things first part is you're absolutely right the president gets to decide who gets the presidential medal of freedom and he can give it as he chooses I have no thoughts to it whatsoever and I certainly don't mind Rush Limbaugh getting the presidential medal of freedom don't mind it at all happening right there and then I'm with you in the okay that's about but this whole state of the union was about creating the moments about some playing on the emotion you know you had that you had the the the young girl with her mother and she wants you know school choice and so now she's going to get these grants to be able to go to school for choice I mean I am all in on school choice guys every last bit of it and then and then and then you have you know the family and the husband the father is as overseas Afghanistan and they brought him in his home that's the one I had the biggest problem with because if you have a soldier and you wanna reunited with his family you don't wait to be obviously to do that first first to get it out of the way you do that so you know what you can catch the rest of this we'll send you a copy of my speech go get out of here you crazy kids don't be a family yeah that's it do that one quick don't delay out on that one and people were like very upset with this if you were to watch how cable news kinda played with this site wow here's the present many wheels is like a game show you know he's just giving things away it's just like Oprah what I find amazing is when Bernie Sanders give things away everybody's cool with it it's great when Chubbs giving things away how dare he if you're asking me if that standard for a state of the union the answers now if you're asking me if that's what I want out of the state of the union the answers also now but if we can highlight school choice arm all in if this is a way to do it solid school choice manifest itself in this thirteen year old black girl and her mother who wants to give her the best education possible that's best for her and school choice is about empowerment and it empowers minorities by the way everybody else it touches being able to choose where your child goes to school to a school that best fits their ability sat that's everything that is everything why would you want that the people who oppose school choice make no sense to me at all is so desperate to to hold on to a power out right you oppose school choice because you only favor teachers unions why because teachers unions provide you with dollars an opportunity school.
