"All time I broke is made and was doctor Sega with David hidalgo. I had the pleasure of meeting mister nehru one morning up at Saratoga working on the backstretch and he actually got me a cup of coffee. I had a Vietnam old slack jacket on and he loved it. And I said, you know, so he said, what do you know about the doctor? And I said, why did you ever ride many kaza? I said, you know, and only two weeks came out and cut off the whole field and he swiped the table. He says, daddy kaz, if you give him instructions as soon as the bell range, we've got everything you told him. And just had a wonderful conversation with mister nehru. Let me ask you a real question I wanted to ask you with all the claiming going on back and forth. Do you give a guy who claimed the horse or a retail and say, hey, listen, this was maybe some insight information on the animal that you just lost and what he said for Kate to you. That's a great question. And Bobby, thanks for the nice comments. And thanks for your service, brother. Thank you, thank you. Thank you very much. Yeah, it is definitely something when you lose a horse, especially if they have some quirks that may be dangerous for their exercise riders or their groom, you'll share that with them and but if you know a horse likes to be trained real hard or likes to be not trained real hard, sometimes those are things you may keep to yourself because you don't really want to see that horse you want to see what's best for the horse, but you don't messily want to see him go on a win streak. Once he leaves your barn, but anything to do with physical or mental tendencies that you know about you'll share with the new trainer. And sometimes through the trainers, there is a community and everyone kind of pulls for each other, but at the same time it's very competitive and so it fluctuates, but from my standpoint, any that would be helpful to make sure no one gets hurt. I'll definitely pass that along. All right, Bobby appreciate the phone call. Bill is in New York, Bill. You're hosting the show. You're on with Doug O'Neill. Go ahead. Hi, Doug. This is such a pleasure to be able to talk to you. Hot rod Charlie, one of my favorite horses. He is so Gritty. He runs every time. A couple of questions. I want to go back first of all to the breeders cup. This past year. And I just want your opinion. He flavian basically put him on the rail for the final drive. And I was under the impression that the rail was a little bit dead that day. Do you think it cost him could he have gotten maybe at least second what's your opinion? I mean, what did you talk with Flavia about? And then my second question, if I might is, how's he doing? How's he looking? I assume you're going to run him in the Dubai World Cup. Is that what the plan is? Because I know you've had him over there. Good questions, Billy. It's hard to second guess a guy like flavian Pratt, but I understand what you're saying there with the inside part of del mar sometimes can be a little bit on the dead side. You know, I recall post race, you know, flabby and sand turn for home. He thought he had that aim on the lead and he was thought he was going to win. And he just could not make up ground on him and I might have had him maybe a cat to dull that particular day too and it's funny where we're stable there at del mar. There's a lot of activity, a lot of owners and even people are just come visit the backside there's just a lot of simulation in the barn that were particular at del mar. So I think he might have came in a tad flat and so yeah, that was definitely a disappointing everybody still tried as hard as he could. And yeah, he is currently in Dubai actually went last week for a few days and got to manage his watches work out he's continues to do well and that's the goal of the march 26th Dubai World Cup and it should be a heck of a race. He got midnight bourbons slated to go their life as good as slated to run in there so it's going to be a should be a full field of top horses and Charlie if he's doing well. He's got a big big chance. All right, I want to thank everybody who took time to call in to email to hit us up on social media. Doug, I want to thank you for finally taking time to do this. We've tried to coordinate the past couple of weeks and man, you got so many top horses now. It's hard to get a hold of you, but I'm so glad that you took time to do it this morning and I know our listeners are too. What a pleasure. Thank you so much. I really appreciate them. I keep up the great work. Thank you for having me. Yeah, you're the best. Good luck Doug. Doug O'Neill. Here on the horse racing radio network.

"He got off and just like, I should have, you know, he had to tap on the brakes a little bit. Going past the grand stand the first time. And he was like, ah, I wish I hadn't done that. I wish I was just went on with it and maybe things would have been a little different. So that's probably the most fresh in my mind, but that was still a solid solid effort on Charlie's part and anytime you got a horse in the gate for Saturday in May and then Kentucky Derby just you feel like you're already won just being there. And then when they show their a big effort, it's pretty amazing. All right, jer is in Louisville, Jared, go ahead. You're hosting the show. You're on with trainer Doug O'Neill. Wow, I can't believe it. Doug, I just loved all have another. My favorite horse of all time. Made a lot of money on the Derby. And couldn't believe that he was not favored in paprikas. They favored bodemeister. And the race went off and it looked like it was all in Bodhi Meister's favor. No one was putting any heat on them. It was a shorter race, and I'm thinking, oh, God, he's not going to get there today, but man, he just wouldn't be denied. My favorite race of all time. So my question is, when did you know I'll have another was as great as he was and do you think he'd won the Belmont if not for the injury? Wow. Yeah, thank you. Brought back a lot of great memories for me as well. You know, he won first time outside. That's always a great sign when a horse wins a straight maiden first time out, whether it be New York Florida, California, those races aren't easy or Kentucky. And I think he had some shit issues early on as a two year old and we game time off and when he came back and won the bob Lewis off that long layoff that was one I think we all looked at each other because it was kind of an ambitious spot to say the least and it was the first time Mario Guterres had ever ridden for us. And that was probably the moment that I thought, wow, this horse stays injury free. It could be some magic coming up here and yeah and to like you say to one the Santa Derby and The Kentucky Derby and then that Preakness was just a dynamite Cuddy effort all the way down the lane. That was so cool. And the Belmont without a doubt. That's something that I lay at bed sometimes kicking myself because, you know, when you go when you get lucky enough to have a horse that can run in the Triple Crown, each track is a little bit different. And I think if I had it all over I do again, I would have trained them a little bit lighter over the sandy Belmont track and it makes sense horses are coming in a little bit tired leg. After the Derby and the Preakness and I just kind of had this mindset that I was going to continue to train him the same way I did going into the Derby and going into the Preakness and, you know, I think that injury was probably due to maybe him having a little bit of tired legs and still putting in a top bit of exercise every morning and just, you know, it took its toll, unfortunately. But I do think you would have wanted to, he would have been injury free. I think he's four to 5 on the morning line that day and I don't think you would have been denied if you were to say without injury. Yeah, well, thank you for sharing that. Thanks for asking. I appreciate it. Jerry appreciate the phone call. 888-966-4776. The number to call and talk with trainer Doug O'Neill. We've got about 5 or 6 minutes left. Doug's a busy man. He has to get back to work, but he is here to take your phone calls HR and nation 888-966-4776, the number to call in. We do have an email here, Doug. It comes from, let's see, Chris in Florida who says other than The Kentucky Derby, what's been your favorite race to win? Probably the Japan cup dirt with fleet street dancer. It was just such a weird like 50 to one. And we were running against like the. John Henry other C biscuit of Japan with some horse and I, his name escapes me, but he had one. I think the previous two years running of it and he was odds on and really the people's horse there in Japan and here we were 50 to one. We were just so honored that we got invited and we got a free trip to Japan and police through dance to his training rate. So we took a chance and it was just a nose bob and we her nose ended up on the right end of that nose bob 50 to one. So I'd say that Japan cup there was probably the other than that Derby's would be the most shocking, exciting race that I can think of. Yeah, that's a cool story. Let's go back out to the phone lines. Bobby is in bayside Bobby, you're hosting the show. You're on with Doug O'Neill. Go ahead. Hey, all saint trainer. You are absolutely a credit to the game. Are you just speak on many occasions? For me, I've been doing this for about 60 years. My 5 and ten don't tend to betting windows too much, but my favorite voice of.

"Doug is here, Doug, good morning, my friend. Good morning, Mike, how are you doing? Doing really well and I'm excited to open up the phone lines to HR and nation and let them take over the show. They're going to ask you some questions here this morning for about 15 minutes. They can also email the show and send them out on social media and I have a couple of those already. Derby path on social media wants us to ask you if you could give an update on slow down Andy and awake at midnight. Ah, yes. They're both came out of the racism from Louisiana and good shape and slow down Andy were pointing towards the sunland park Derby at the end of this month and awake at midnight. We're thinking of the Ashland at keenland for her, but both of them are doing really well. All right, good news there. Larry and Louisville wants to know this is a fun question. Where did you celebrate after your Derby wins and what's your favorite watering hole in Louisville? Wow, wow. You know, some amazing lucky moment like that at the night blurs into the morning and yeah, you know, I do remember with pollen zeller radom they love the horse so much and they celebrate as much as anyone, but they're not huge drinkers. So I think we end up going to a restaurant and just had a great meal and reminisced about the whole experience and then maybe when they went to bed I might end up heading over to Jeff ruby's or something like that along right near the gold house, sir. But there's no bad place in Louisville when you have a great day at the racetrack. That's for sure. And you've had a couple of those with those Derby wins. We're going to go to the phone lines now, Billy is in Indiana. Billy, go ahead, you're hosting the show. You're on with trainer Doug O'Neill. Hi Doug, how are you today? Good, Billy, no tough questions, Billy. Go easy. I'm going to ask you a tough one. You're kind of the middleman as a trainer. You have a relationship with many jockeys. Some of your favorites and also owners, what do you find to be the key to keeping that relationship alive with the owners and the jockeys? More importantly with the jockeys because I find that many jockeys have regular trainers I ride for. Yeah, that's a great question, Billy. And so much of it is out of our hands really because especially with the top riders because they're going to they're going to ride the best horses in each race. So the key to having some continuity is just having the best course in Detroit as much as you can. But out here in California, we're blessed with flavian Pratt even though he's ready to head back east or to the Midwest, but a lot of it is just the owners who pay the bills and are very instrumental in managing their horses, you know, who they want to ride and again, if you can get one of the top riders and the owners want to use them then that's the best way to go. So I don't know how I answered the questionnaire. It's a little bit challenging. In my situation with pollin de la radham, they've got a really strong rapport with Mario Gutierrez. So, you know, it's kind of a no brainer he writes the majority of their horses. So it makes it pretty easy for me. We're not out looking for riders and in an ideal world. The continuity of Mario riding all the pollen Zillow atom horses he knows the horses as good as anyone. So that sometimes can be a real plus. Communication with the jockey, you feel the key to the trainer jockey relationship? Yeah. I think this mutual respect, you know, when things don't go as planned, which is quite often. You want to take ownership and that you could have done a better job as a trainer in preparing the horse and, you know, maybe you didn't choose the right distance to the right surface. And then on the flip side of that, ideally, the riders, if things don't go well, are open and to what they maybe could have done better. And so just the mutual respect of, hey, let's learn from that. That race there and try to do better next time out. So, you know, I think that for the most part, I have a really good report with most jockeys, but there are some times where you get a frustrating ride and then you get the short conversation of the horse didn't have it. It just didn't have it that day, something like that, which drives me nuts because it doesn't really give me much to build on for the next time. So like just some communication where both of us, what can we do better for the next time? All right, Billy. I appreciate the call. It's Billy and Indiana. Thanks so much, Billy. And don't forget, this is your chance to host the show with trainer Doug O'Neill. So if you have a question for Doug, this is your chance to ask it 888-966-4776. That's 8 8 8 9 6 6 hr. And by the way, so many of you have tried to get through over the past several weeks since we launched this new segment. And you've gotten a busy signal. So we said, you know what? We're all about our listeners. We now have a second phone line in the studio, so you shouldn't have to worry about that. Unless they're both full. So keep the calls coming. 888-966-4776 to talk with Doug O'Neill. Doug, I have a question for you. Yeah. We talk about your two Derby wins. I'll have another in Nyquist. How about the ones that you didn't win? Which one would you like to have back if you could do it over again? Wow, wow. Hi, rod Charlie. We're going to go and go too far back just this last year. But, you know, and that's one just the brilliance of flavian practice such an amazing horseman, amazing jockey. And.

"If time you're windy a call they personally advise on each horse is if they were there all so not like a huge weekend racing. I think it's a little bit more low key than last van. But we've got the the lake george on friday at saratoga race of jousted. Cdn rising star live trying to stretch out. And i think she's best mile a mile in the late. George wilson of the coaching club. American oaks on saturday for the maybe two times. The rest of the year will get to see that one of the times So so she'll be in there a pretty interesting field. Actually george interesting because my own girl toby. Td on rising star session back out to a mile. I believe saturday in overseas The king george. The in queen elizabeth stakes race bona mile and a half on the turf. Ask and it looks like we're gonna have mishrif and loves in that race. Which would be a great match. Day abs in to japan a couple of really nice european but i think it mishrif in love or the are the main two you want to keep an eye on a delmarva eddie read stakes And then we were supposed to have on sunday. The chevy it's arizona which is a mile race for older fillies and mares and supposed to be in that race was swift skydiver. But it was. It was just reported by our man on the scene at saratoga. Jane that because of the quarantine which we didn't mention the potentially fee one quarantine or the actual corinthian or potentially one cases. I wanted the barnes at saratoga kenny. Mcpeek he's gonna run skydiver in the whitney stakes instead against males because they can't horses over in with under that quarantine cannot raise until at least august i. The whitney is is august seven. So it's kind of had a little bit of a subpar year so far she hasn't like issue we we haven't seen her quite like she was is a three year old filly so far this year. So she's gonna take on males in the whitney which i think is going to be very salty spot but we know tape is never afraid to take a shot at and think outside the box. So that's pretty interesting and you know it's it's i liked. I liked that about k. Mcpeek that other trainers feel like always is gonna is gonna miss. The choubey. guess will put on the bench for a month or wait for like the perfect spot. He's like no screw it. We'll run into whitney love that about him. So so we'll look forward to that and just a couple of other news items Before we get out of here the that mystic guide unfortunately at need chef he kind of you know lackluster second in the in the suburban kind of disappointing. That you know the chatter. I've heard so far is that they're not sure whether or not they're gonna they're gonna to race him. I think you know for horse like him. A as as talented as it is and super talented. Hasn't really done a ton on the racetrack. At the you know is big. Whim is in the dubai world cup other than that. He's got a couple lower level win so for me as a fan. I think he still has a lot to prove. So i would hope that he's going to come back and running in. But you know it's one of those things where you don't want you know it's it's tough whether or not he can get back this season and then it can't get back this season. You're going to forfeit entire breeding season with him as a fire next year..

"You never really know but i think works like lava man who are just so mentally tough and You just see the way. He communicates with other worse when he chaperones up to inform the track and he's a true leader. He's a true fighter is a blue collar or suit. You know didn't have any five star farm raising ameri like that so he. He comes from humble beginnings and You know i. I think what we are hoping he could help us do by coaching The horses he has done that and just exceeded our expectations. And and just seeing the way. He's looks physically mentally. Yeah i i think a lot of x ray sources probably could do a good job but i mean each truly like these the san diego spur coach for our barness shirt. Last one for me. I always wondered this. Because i think you and your brother. Dennis are are known as very good judges of talent especially the two year old sales. I wonder where that comes from where that that kind of keen eye comes from. And i i think if you'll out like kenny mcpeek you can find good horses for lower prices. Maybe that's some other people are not for whatever reason. Where does that come from. And is there stuff along the way that you guys have learned. That have majored better at economic. Or since i think i'm very average at that but Thanks for the kind words. But he i think me any asset that i might give somebody for purchasing a horse would be just my experience of horses at. I've been around. That have done well in the ones who didn't do well but i think with dennis. He just has a personality such that things seemed to quiet down though sales because of sales are so. There's so much buzz going on and you know with me. I'm constantly seeing friends owners and trainers and it's hard not to get caught up in all that stuff and and i get caught up in all the stories of all you gotta see this hip one. Forty one is freak. And i'm like really. I wanna see the free. Where has just kinda. He's able to stay quiet and to himself and And look for the little things you know foot. Good in the solid just really simple things. But they're easy to see but they're also easy not to see if you get too much going on in your head. So i think that's stances biggest strength and he's wrong a lot. Okay me wrong. And i love him to death but Man when he's right they're not just allowance horses their sake sources. But they're graded horses so he he does a wonderful job. Sure back to the the del mar me and one of the many things about are as we see the stars of the future. I noticed you do have five. Horses nominated the del mar futurity. Are there any future drug. Charlie's that you're gonna unveil marts me move high. I hope so you know.

Charlie's groom hand off charlie to lava man in sabas leaving addict that got me all like most Horses have been so amazing to me and and i love them both but You know when. I went down to the track. I wanted to ask about that. You know we. We had mecca wolfendale on last week on the show. We talked to her a little bit. About how integral the fans artists errands hogan. What a big deal. It was to get fans back in. The building mar is kind of similar. I would think you know. It's it's the summer place to be in the san diego area. How has it been to have fans back in the building. What has that added to the atmosphere. The experience of racing at del mar year year right now. unfortunately i'm ben to the races In at monmouth but talking to our team there and a lot of friends and family who have gone It's been awesome is era so right whether be monmouth or saratoga or down mar yeah. It is a lot of friends and family and and and fans or who may be aren't as avid as is some of us who choose those kind of locations to check out racing for a weekend at and so having the grand back opened and it sounds like they had a great Few days down there. Great experience and Again delmar managements as good as anybody innate they laid out a great card for for for their and So that that is special. Have people back nature bad things that you when you lose racing as far as far as sports fan it's parts. Yes sir. Want to get back to the coolest and most famous stable oni in racing today and I'm sure it must be such a neat experience for union team of lawmen around but tell us about Just not just him but any horse can any retired. Yeah no people tune in for the banter. These are just the vehicles the vehicles on stuff that we can argue about over bird over and over again. It's a win for him just because he can run at saratoga. Nine along is aware of because these you know he's got. He's got a couple of big horses that he's gonna wanna run in some of these big races but yeah going forward. I don't know that he's gonna get a lot of breaks or injunctive relief from a lot of different places in you know bentley. We've talked about this in. The story said that this it came down to whether or not narrows considered a state actor as opposed to a private company. You know churchill has been able to has has not gotten. Those appeals yet from the babakr legal team because churchill is privately owned corporation assumption whereas naira of because it actor had to give him his due process rights. And that's what it came down to. Yeah i would hope that they would still have the same energy you know. Give him a hearing and and still try to get him off the grounds. Because i would. I would hope that they're not doing what i think. A lot of people have done for a long time. With bob baffert is just kind of rushing things under the rug and waiting for things to blow over and then being like the head bob. Whatever you're done we'll ask any more questions. I i hope that was actually still. Has the augusta go through with it. Because i bet my feelings. I don't think he really needs to be representing racing. After all is is issues over the years. He's always have a safe haven in california. I think that'll that that i think won't change too much of an institution to entrench in california but we'll see we'll see what he does next but it'd be nice. You got a couple of weeks off from from talking legal issues that be good especially in the middle of saratoga. I haven't thought about back this message. A judge agreed with him that he was denied his or the amendment right of due process. And he's going to be able to race at saratoga at least for the near future. We'll we'll see what happens. See what the next step is for nyra. Whether or not they have a a counterarguments one of the interesting things and bill had a good piece In today's with legal expert bennett lead men who used to work for the New york state Gaming commission. He said that you know really all naira has the do now is giving hearing to give me a hearing. And then they still decided to suspend him. They can do it which begs the question. Why didn't they just that. In the first place when they cover their bases in and give him a hearing and those through all the steps necessary to ban someone. I think it's because they wanted a good. Pr hit from that. From that day. Saying that spirit era african no longer run and narrow tracks the day after dina spirit Did not win. The preakness stakes. Nevertheless you know this is. This is their chance. I guess if they really have that kind of conviction that they don't want bob baffert racing on the grounds that they can go back and give urine but bill. But you have to look back to this and and you know the history of racing over the last many years is the horses did peak early in saratoga. The two year olds are not the ones that win the triple crown races matter of fact The last time a horse came out of the sanford to win the triple crown race was two thousand and four of the fleet. Alex before that you have to go all the way back to nineteen seventy seven with a firm so Obviously is a very good horse. But will we be talking about him. A leading up to kentucky derby next year. Maybe vote again probably not. Yeah and and bill him with disappointed about is that there is a harvey's little goyal citing on or amine she. She was definitely within. I think a length and a half of a winner Very very impressive but dynasty on. You guys didn't a lot of highlights the sandberg with wit. You know one of the takeaways from that is not only that he won so impressively but His sire practical jokers freshman..

"Obviously dominates the headlines is the controversy. As rennes overseas would say There was also a trip man who ran a really nice race in the united nations in flattered domestic spending even more seconds domestic spending in manhattan when wire-to-wire in the united nations pretty good ride by lobby impromptu. Get him to relax. We'll run off a doctor host when the is cup is as well in a decent performance with the bulk of the rest of the action. Last week is at saratoga All may big performances really was like a vintage saratoga opening week. We just at big horse after big horse and not just in the greatest states there were some allowance races of needing winners. Billy just impressed in kind of ran off the screen a little bit you know. In as far as action. We had the repeat of the one two from the justice game in the diana charlie appleby and godolphin coming in without biegel and some romance is honestly really kind of remarkable The way that the race was was was so similarly ran. The only difference. This time was victim on the outside of summer. Romance of coming up the rail last time in the just a game But you know we had a wit who is completely dominant in the sanford. I thought that was a really impressive performance. The horse that i you know i was trying to beat at a short price. Rinaldi forbid nap will be jimmy bond. Get a stakes winner. there will express train of the san diego..

"That were suspended really feel like that. That's that's the case Again those three horses ready for The horse went down. they were eighteen. Twenty lights up on the rest of the field and they showed their class in in. It's really a shame while levels of course said to go down another that'd be cute Because it really does this -combobulate the the the finish and and the great performances that all three of us sources were putting in Before the incident occurred think overall the race played out the way we thought it. Would those three horses were the kremlin crop in a outstretched you know You know we're looking around to find the other the other groups of of of contenders in the race news from lightly And and it's just a shame that we can see all three of them finish Wire because i don't know if all right charlie would have wanted me. It's all speculation right now. It's the who would have wire first and second and third. But i'll tell you one thing it would have been and build loves hyperbole. It would have been like the alysheba bet twice lost code hassle when all the wire don't don't you think they'll honestly if the incident had occurred that they would have all been like within a zone. Yeah i mean. I don't think these three horses as a group are as good as alysheba lost Twice but yeah. I mean you know we were robbed of at least in the last fifteen yards or so of you know a just wonderful finish among three you know and i i'm more picking on you john or settlement people down and they're very good horses and you know i don't think guinea go down in history is is is the great horses of all time but there were three good horses they put on a show and it was the the pletcher sprinter. I understand why they gave it a try in their Follow the correct. Joe always say following. Yeah but you know that was just a bit off more than they could chew. They're coming out of those sprint races. But i think we'll see that horse at some point in time win major races. I mean obviously has a lot of talent so if you know if you suspected this was going to be a big asper going the mile on a off the sprint races was a three horse racing a three evenly matched horses and they put on a good show until all help broke loose of course with the spill just glad that i put myself out there and write a feature article following a building either but yeah so i was going to be able to stay with those other two. I thought he was. He was backing up. Just a little bit but I was bill. That hot rod Took a big step back which is hard to say for horse across the wire. I in a grade one race. What he was just so good in the belmont and he was back like he couldn't. I was honestly surprised at the way that was that race. Was i thought that. Hot rod. Charlie a man would be much closer in odds. I thought they would be like sixty five to two one. But i'll ride. Charlie was rushing the wagering down to three to five four to five or so and mandolin..

"Jackie hit a horse ten times down. The stretch isn't horse racing. Kroll we have to our ship. I see that from the breakdowns from the drug stories. I don't see it from that. I think it's just something that a lot of people in racing one and implement to pat themselves on the back to make them feel better about making the sport more humane when the actual things that we could do to make this more safe and more humane. We haven't done crew tech aids and we're just starting to sort of do it now as so. I think this is an easy fix. That does not take a lot of unintended consequences into account. Neither talk about is the fact that those sources were eighteen to twenty lights up on the rest of the field when before the lookout bad the other horses were. I mean yes. They were terrible. I agree. I think somebody said that last week in state that you rip the hunt higher raise you said it was like the worst hasmonean and line. Go back and listen. I said the top three were legitimate grave. When you guys mentioned the top three horses which are fine but the other horses that are potentially in the race kill you mentioned with the niro show bill finley absolutely show. The conversation decided what wasn't interesting race because it brought together three of the real heavy hitters from the trouble crown..

"And when i i watch the race live i was saying myself first of all thank you. Everyone is okay Secondly wait cra- really lead. You know how rights early drift drift and drift drift and and he had to known that he was directly inside as he was knowing down the middle racetrack from the seven. Six at the five. And that's that's a little bit of intimidation riding in i understand Not only intimidation writing but also back. That probably didn't wanna you know break. Charlie's momentum because he he was picking off you know Horses than moving down the lane berry very good pace that being said somebody else said to me. Who's in the jockey colony. Said you know one of the problems. That paco lopez has is that he likes to do this. Little nifty move. Where horses coming in on him. He really tries to china where he can pull the horse and not lose any momentum. Somebody continue to try to pass them on the outside and that was allegedly. That's one of the reasons why ortiz smack them on national television because he does a lot. He clips worsens heels because he tries to sign. You know the the the the the spot to get to. The outskirts of heat isn't loosening. Manson so i think it was a combination of those things that ended up making. You know the horse go down Or or almost at least lose momentum and not finish the race thankfully palko didn't get hurt in instance but the bottom line is that i think it was a combination of a lot of factors now. Obviously i'm avoiding the you know the the elephant in the room which is have a whip or not to have a whip and when i'm finding out from talking to people is you have a lot of non writers who say well what is gonna do on a twelve hundred pound horse. That's going thirty five miles an hour. Are they really going to control it. And you have other people who have written before who say yet really is is an instrument that helps us or it's an instrument that absolutely is necessitated for us to try to control and try to urge these athletes to the wire. I have still not gotten in my mind consensus as to whether or not you really need to have the whip to control a horse or if it's just something that these writers have had all their lives and it's a crutch for them they're just used to having it. It's almost a critters safety net a security blanket for them because all their lives. They've written with this in their hand and that's just the way that they're used to moving their hands. So i wish i could give you a more definitive answer on it other than the fact that i just don't So that that's where you have to go. I think if you if you're gonna dismiss almost the almost universal agreement among jockeys that this is something they need to control horses either gonna say a their status and they just love living animals or be that they are just used to it and they don't know how to ride any other way either way. I think if you completely change the way a jockey rides and controls a horse overnight. I think you are going to end up with incidents. Like this. And i said i'm not saying that this one hundred percent was caused by that but i just think that you know any even any any mata come of increase in danger to a horse for two to jockey which makes a spill. More likely is unacceptable to me. Bill stir everything. I just disagree. I think optics are certainly important right now but. I don't think that..

"Because you know as bad as you might wanna say the whips. Look optically you know. It looks even worse. A horse getting squeezed in going down and breaking down the hassle were kim's close to having on saturday. So you know i'm not gonna say the Would have one hundred percent Stop that from happening. And it's hard to ascribe one incident of that specific thing. But i just think it's unnecessary chance that we're taking in a sport that's already very dangerous to give jockeys less control of their mouths would say you guys. Were bill's going to be. But what say guys. I'm not least bit surprised that you brought into the big lie here And you've been you've been on this side you drank the koolade. What's any again my head's going to explode. If i go into this too much. But i will say one thing joe in your in your speech there. You use the word optics and doesn't look good for the game as it who cares about well. Maybe that's a little harsh. But he said it's all about opposites you damn right. It's all about optics old matter here. It's the only thing that matters in this entire your surmount when there is no horse racing and you're working in an amazon warehouse making eleven dollars an hour packing grades because there's no horse race you can look back and say you know the optics of that whip thing. Were really not good. Maybe i should have thought a little bit differently about that. John and i will be dead. It'll be your problem and among the three of us in only the three of us. Joe i mean again leashes. Some creates that there's zero evidence whatsoever. If you look at this rationally and people are not rational you know. Maybe i'm not the most rational guy when it comes to this either. Did this occurred because of the whip whatsoever. I mean you do sooner or later there was going to be a spill and everybody was going to say it had something to do with the whip and there's going to be more spills at mom's or stalls all over the place if he coulda had used the whip to avoid this building wire. There smells horse racing in the first place. So anyways again. But it's ironic that when you touted the big lie year. Use the argument that i flip one hundred and eighty degrees and uses the entire argument. Why there shouldn't be whipping and racing because of the optics. John my my take away from all. That was the image of bills head exploding in and him taking me out in a murder suicide. That was mauvaise. I being up here at their best days owners trainers and most importantly jockeys abou- specifically about the hassle and also about the liberal..

"The John White Theme Good Morning Good Morning Steve What that song reminds me that after the holiday week of racing insane the need the last two yesterday one of the things I have to do today is change order boxes so it we did have holiday raising I really haven't talked much about yesterday of course the colon for McLaughlin and the Knickerbocker I needed did not have steak action but on Saturday and the staff the CAL distaff just grazed me Nick Alexander there is again can't say no and Giovanni Franko for Phil D'Amato and then Likud won the Nokia on Sunday Peter Miller do but really I think honestly the most important performance of the weekend it's Anthony's gotta be honore p very impressed of wind and of course anytime I see on spring of Hollywood story I immediately think Hollywood story in the U. R. and looks like Hollywood story multiple grade one winner has produced a very nice two year old here orig- alling by honor code a grandson of Eight the and the and boy you know I was extremely impressed with that debuted run sprinting boy you could just really see the tip of the iceberg there and they took their time with him didn't rush him back off and stretched out which it looked like was is GonNa be something that he would really like and I was really impressed by the fact that in his debut he was so far back early this time he came out of that gate and came out very nicely very professionally really and it looked heading into that clubhouse turn Smith really would've preferred not to even beyond the lead but he couldn't help but that honor ap just wasn't like he was dragging in there or anything but Smith wasn't going to restrain them to take after lead and for him to come home as nicely as he did I mean he just drew off so beautifully in the lane and gets a ninety one so he goes from a seventy-seven debut to a ninety one Steve Anderson and the racing form does such a good job Reporting that I once did here in southern California for the D. R. F. He pointed out that that was the fastest time twelve racers at the meeting one mile on the main track so far as ours the Rod Time One thirty seven point ninety four so you had mentioned text immediately after the race you thought would the Los Alamos dirty make cents Steve Anderson also reported that that that is exactly a race that they are contemplating for honor AP and they did say no Breeders Cup for AP so they are thinking of the Los Alameda teary just seemed to fit wonderfully from a timing standpoint and they're racist really been so good through the years as a springboard into three year old campaign so it looks like really bright future here for trainer John Sheriff as one of the best trainers I've ever been around and it looks like he's going to be really primed on the Derby trail here with honor. AP Well we talked last week to John and I I've actually I'm kind of glad that we connected weeks after my initial I think it was in September at the end the Dell Mark I reached out to John a couple of times and we just didn't connect and and so then then that morning last week these he responded he said sorry okay all right if you insist and who is tremendous and he's he's you know it's funny there's there's there's so many of the horsemen visits that always seem to resonate and John's a on that front shug how about Barclay tag last week too me Barkley I thought was really informative and insightful ban that was just fantastic and another you know to me positive sign coming away from this Andre p performance you know that was pretty highly regarded race and terms of prospects there's magician finished second for Richard Mandella and you look at it and say well yeah he got his clock cleaned getting beat by a little over five lengths batismal suggestion was over ten lengths in front of the third place finisher night race and as I say it was not considered a week race going into it so it's just further evidence Inste- to me that what we very well are dealing with here with this honor Api just he he's he's the kind the two year old to me that it's just so exciting yeah now this is what this is what we're after a you know once the summer and they start to they start to parade through we get to this juncture and it starts to get you know starts to get interesting we from standpoint John I I one other thing I think I I'll slip any or as I look at yesterday's results the the natural the hat trick for Doug O.`Neil yesterday the fifth sixth and seventh race and for those that heard me last week I think on Friday I'll just keep reiterating that Doug O'Neil deserves the absolute two hundred percent support and appreciation of the industry a he more than any one individual from a from within the industry has been leading this you know these these proactive don't WanNa call them protests so much as considerations and rallies before big days at at del Mar and at Santa Anita and With the help of Oscar dilatory I I cannot congratulate and and voice enough support for what got is is doing and so for him to be rewarded On the Karma Front as as hammer famously refers uh-huh King and the Good Karma swinging around the Doug Right now also got a mention it looks like a step forward it a for a three year old Samantha Segel's Quality Road Philly that was bred by Martha Mohammed that's Road Ranger looking for sure in that race and you mentioned neil you know he's always been such a terrific ambassador for our game honestly you know you think of the controversy that was involved back in the day without having another in he handled all that I thought extremely well heading to the Belmont and Gee what a disappoint many and I really think I'll have another I had a fee after the Kentucky Derby I bet on him to win the Belmont stakes in a proposition in Vegas where they say will there be a triple crown winner yes or no and this was before the preakness but it was after the Derby and he was such a low lightly regarded horse he in fact he of course wasn't even the favourite in the preakness boaty meister was and then headed to the Belmont was the most lying favorite union rags who won the race but considering the final time and so forth I just really feel if I'll have another had had his chance if he would have won the Belmont but well never know that but like I say such a disappointment and both Doug O'Neill and already handled that with such class and You know I remember being up at Emerald downs in the early two thousands for the lawmakers Mile Pacific Northwest West major race and I was there to do the the Fox North West Telecast along with Joe with the and and others and I remember that Doug O'Neill was sending up a horse from southern California for the race by the name of Scott Hi Jack had actually he won the race broke the track record and Doug O'Neill actually gave me the two French shoes that skyjacked war in that race and but I remember the people at Emerald the in the publicity department especially saying do you know this Doug O'Neill from southern California said well yes of course I do they said what kind of guy is he I said believe me by the time he leaves here are you everyone here at Emerald will love this guy
