Mcafee and corner mccaffrey. Mccaffrey sounds like a great irish name. Of course you know as mom and dad irish. And that's because they're free mccaffrey's to two of his is boys and what you don't know is there margaret. Was i believe the all time. Lee rebounder when she finished her career at notre dame in ninety. Two inch became an assistant coach. Of course that's where they met and they have this unbelievable family that's done great things at greensboro and then sienna and now iowa but more than anything. I wanna talk to to college. Kids college brothers. They're gonna have their own podcast and also we'll talk name image and likeness stuff. They like stuff they don't like we'll just have some fun with it. Okay so pretty. There would be no you if not for me to tell your your dad's pathetic in his pursuit of your mom and i had to give them some tips and pointers at notre dame and thankfully. Listen to me and obviously that that became you guys. How are you doing doing well doing stub with a long day of practice. I'm patrick Ankle injury or what. Yeah again that we're getting there. Okay so You've got what's it like to play baseball and basketball in college at that doesn't rushing like the only guy no he did reports baseball. Masol attala so pretty much. What i do is in the fall. The fall is a huge baseball practice season. So we'll we practice every day for for a while In the fall and then as soon as soon as that falls answer baseball jump right into basketball. And so then once i jump into basketball played the whole season and then as soon as basketball ends in march april wherever than jumped next day right into base ball and it works Honestly pry works best because my dad's the coach and he's willing to work me a little bit so But you know. I think that. I mean i've had a great time with it It's fun yell coach. Eller in my dad is well both been really accommodating and they helped me out in knob. I've always loved both really enjoyed playing both. So i'm just been lucky to be able to keep doing it up to this point patchy played she play both. They're shooting just focus on line now. Wants to play ball. Let them play ball Doesn't bother me. Wants to keep playing ball if he can play both shots up on a daily basis. Like you go in you. "Come back from a knee all right so we could access jamal maurienne clay. And then we added all these other problems with the warriors. You know what i mean. Got it but like it's like okay russ has had four knee surgeries lebron. Her to last three years Hurt like every year. The brooklyn nets like brooklyn the best team in the nba. We're gonna win mba. Champion harry Rolls his ankle and james harden polls his hamstring. Like these things. Do have what you're saying is there's these are limited software engineer soft tissue like we're talking to major injuries and clay the one thing that i it does give me maybe more hope is Is that you see how katie came back. Always tending like it feels like medicine has really improved. It didn't for demarcus cousins and a different position. He wasn't in great shape. He's not the not the same type of player so i don't know it's going to be really interesting to see what happens with with klay but i also think the point that you may which one which is. I don't think people understand how much they were ahead of the nba. Yeah the understanding valuing the three point shot small ball basketball all the right pieces you bad staff. Second contract was only forty four million dollars. Allow them to go out and get other guys now. They're capped out now. They're older now. Everybody plays some form a small ball. So i can stay now. I just think. I just feel like the compound effect of question marks it just going to be tough for the warriors to overcome all of that but they do have staff but i would say lakers lebron in nsf. Katie's that's another factor. Why you could have the you know. The nets the lakers over the warriors. But you don't all great players. But i will give the edge still on and katie when it comes to the play offs and the finals and didn't ask you. I have my own opinion that talk to you. But i'm not gonna cloud yours. Jello ball made headlines because he made threes erste. You watched you evaluate what level players jailable. Well i could tell by the way you framed the question. I probably know your opinion on it. Maybe i'm wrong. But i'll tell you this. He looked like he belonged in. Mba summer league. You gotta give credit for that. He played well. You know he made shots. I feel like the biggest issue with him. Is the foot speed at his position. I think it would help him to lose some weight. Maybe get a little bit quicker on. His feet of the thing is though is brother could be a future superstar and that helps younger siblings or even older siblings get on their team so i wouldn't be surprised if he becomes the charlotte hornet in the future especially get down to the g. league and play really well down there in combination of lamelo becoming a superstar. I think it can happen but you know in some aliki like you belong. I'll say that stuff eyebrow. I can't wait to your next pod appreciate jonah mine eliane not just because you have me on nearest. Because i've been listening i enjoy. I enjoy your insight. I appreciate thanks so much for having me on your platform of keep up the great work with all and everything else. that's due. Now we're going to have to do kind of like a like check in arizona new head coach right Kentucky coming off of really top season texas new head coach. Looks like they're loaded up for bear. Oklahoma new head coach indiana new head coach north carolina head coach. Like these are the biggest of the big boys. I hope you enjoyed that. "He's like wasn't there. I was there not yet. He it was when i got there. It was a it was Steph davidson david. Lee stay steph steph. German david lee Monte elliot's klay thompson the row right dominic. Wire jeremy tyler on just adrian Brandon rush there in the beginning. Okay so you show up. And what was your ahmanson. Good guy really good guy you almost got. Unlv guy good hair. Great ethnic What was your opinion of staff before you got there like you can remember. Would you think steph curry. Would you take them for you. Got man Went to five star. Can't when i was in high school and step was on my team. So win on when i got there i remember like thinking like man. This is the same. Do that like we played together. High school can't teammates. And i remember it was like it was like a like a level of uncertainty should just walk up to him and like bring it up. Do you remember. But i was like so hesitant about it. Even though steph isn't amazing guy like very welcome personality from the. I met him and he was actually the person i remember. We were teammates. Fox star and dan like this crazy he remember that because he just went on like he was an amazing. 'cause player Got all this newfound attention. When i was the first thing he said. Madam hose like relieve down. This is a normal guy can super coup and i was able to talk to him At that time he was dealing with a lot of ankle injuries. Yeah problem stay healthy. So i just remember his his work at the of course. Of course he stayed after he worked in his game. We showed a lot of shots. The things like that but this discipline he was as far as like taking care of his body icing all the time every time aba practice it was always like is book in front of his locker. And how open. It was conversation with him. There was times. I will be in a room with him and i'll be so like hesitant to say something. And he will be the one like you know like certain things like bring like starring conversations with me and i ended up getting really really cool when i was their way back to the five stop was he good. If i star he was good he wanted to go to virginia tech. I remember i remember that he wanted to go to any allowing movielike yelich. Virginia tech's shorties plan. But and and i didn't know who was when when we are teams put together but he was doing a lot of different from a lot of guys on he was shooting of course while from three Really crafty like his layoffs and things like that. He was definitely didn't have like that. Big big name. Everyone else had can't put you could definitely see the different skill level. Okay but would you. If i were to tell you this dude is gonna be a two time. Mvp of the nba at that point in time. What would you set at. That's harm probably not but do him and nothing. It had had had more to do with the hype that a lot of other players had official like it was certain names that you heard all the time that when you saw them it was like you had this amazing amount of like expectations of which seat steph at that time..

"The iheartradio app. Hbo max apple podcasts. Or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome in all podcasts. I'm doug gottlieb and something special that gate tonight. I believe yes tonight. Which is tomorrow. Japan time the quarterfinals. Begin in the elvis. And who better. You can't get anywhere else anywhere else. Who better to break down. What's going on. We'll we're gonna see what you should look for. Canada the interesting stories about usa basketball and the match up tonight with spain that guy who's actually coached and beaten spain. Hey and a guy who's coast in per national team and these americans coach stateside Understands the differences in the basketball. Mike taylor joined us before. He's the head coach of the polish national team. Join us before we've talked about his journey. But now we're just gonna we're gonna cheat basically we're gonna steal his brain and help you get ready if you wanna go to bed rivers and throw some cash down. You're just really interested because i mike. Thanks for joining us. You know this pod has really exploded. And i thank the folks that iheart and colin cowherd and the senseless needless promotion. Whatever but it hasn't been senseless. Needless we get over three thousand three hundred thousand downloads per episode. I have so many coaches who tell me like ayman the road recruiting or now guys are off that they listen and they love people stories about their journey. But i think this isn't even better because you have brilliant basketball mind you have. You have a real grasp for these teams Okay so i what What is your thought on the makeup of usa of this actual roster well first of all doug. I'm really happy to be here level. Big fan you know in. It's wonderful to talk about feeble basketball. Something i love. And i think that team. Usa obviously the the headline grabbing win for france to start off the tournament. Set the tone for everything. And i think what you have to look at is. I feel like team. Usa's team that's built maybe not necessarily for the fiba game I think that people are looking at a lot of different reasons. But for me number one i feel like the team is missing. A playmaking distributing point. Guard a guide. That's going to connect all the scores. Move the ball. And the second thing is i think that you know. It's just a team that is it. You saw france played physical. Play big against us in outrebounded us. I think it was forty. Two forty two thirty six or something. The first game. Where france won you know. The international teams are not just stretch for you know like the they've got skilled physical players and i feel like the team. Usa is missing some of the blue collar guys. Some of the guys that are are bringing that physicality because they have not I like honestly like the power forward is kind of position. Nobody has any more. It's like lebron. James is at the size makeup of what used to be a carlo. Right there like basically the differences like he's a point power forward now that i And so instead you had the draymond greens who's you know vets-go undersized power forward at but he is is undersized and now he's an the other part is i i. I'd have to go back and look at this year. But i remember last year the year before in the playoffs. None none zero starting centers in an nba. Playoff team was american more. Now what i. What does that tell you well. Look there's a little bit Karl anthony towns bipolar dominican republic. But you know. He's not a traditional center but Do the job again. Why why do you like. I'm fascinated by this. And i want to get to the differences of bima basketball and why you're able like rudy. Gobert was a liability in the nba playoffs. He's a strength in in the olympics. But let's just start with like let's hypothesize. Why do you think that we have everything. But we certainly don't have centers that can play in the nba. Well i think the nba game is different than the fiba gain. I think you've got a lot of rim runners room protectors guys are gonna sit dunker in the nba Guys that are trying to just finish pick and rolls and things like this and then you know the international teams roll out a guy like you know markelle soul who is rebounding. And he's got a game and they're playing through these guys on the perimeter dribble handoffs backdoor cuts things like this Where they can get some baldwin play through the post So i think that the skill fact of the ability to pass the ball. I think you see a lot. More prevalent in europe. And i think teams are setting their teams up to play through these guys. You know the nba gain. You're really playing through your stars. And i think there's limited opportunities for other players to make plays i think for example with slovenia one of the great things that these guys have done is hit for example. Mike toby on the short roll all the time. And i think you see a lot of pocket passing short roll guys. That can make that decision and move the ball you know. Find find shooters on the perimeter. And i think this is something that these european teams through the pick and roll game and with their big men. You know it's it's an added dimension you don't ordinarily see with five You know the rim runners the rim protectors this typical type player in the nba Do you think it's because we we basically Again the why is it. Why is it that again. We have sound like we don't have big. Is we have some big guys but is it our our training retraining them for an nba style. And the mike toby's instrument he's american but he he got he got a slovenian passport so he gets to play for them and we it's not like he would have made our national team But i'm i'm just. I'm i'm interested in that why we don't have any that i'm i'm trying to think of like we had the plumlee really the only ones get but they can't really score in there when when you think about you go into your gyms in la and you're you're coaching your travel ball teams and things like this you know and you watch high school kids work out a a lot of times even the five men even the bigs that are on the floor are trying to play lead guards. They're all trying to step out on the perimeter. There's very few guys trying to play back to the basket low post and even in the nba people will say argue analytics. Hey there's the post up. A low percentage shot low percentage offense. But i think even if you don't want that to be a primary part of your offense you need to establish the post because you know you could flatten out the defense number one you pressure to ram and then you can play post reaction and get your team good shots so i think that teams that are just trying to play. Pick and roll in. Prepare their players to play that way. You know you become a one dimensional team. And i think the thing about feeble basketball that i love is teams from all over the world play different styles and i think the in america right now we've got too much of nba mentality. For example. a pick and roll is for me to score. A bigger role is to to but overseas in europe in the fiba game. It's a five on five game. The thing about dodge for example is he can run the same play four plays in a row. And i've seen him do it. In countless planning his venezuela they ran a simple slot. Pick and roll you know. He hit toby for bucket. He finished at the rim. He made the diagonal pass at a corner three and he pass it out to the wing for three same play just reading the game making it five on five and i think this is where you know people talking down about post jobs and post up opportunities and then secondly the way players are trained to play the post in the usa. Everybody wants to try to play like a guard. And there's different aspects that post game that you can really get good at that. I just think that we're not coaching. Are young kids up to do eight year. You're right k. there's a A friend of mine. That i grew up. He was.

"Have you been to the concentration camps. i haven't i haven't either. I wanna go. I had an opportunity where i wasn't able to but listen. I actually talked to someone today. Who told me about that. Someone in their family visited al schwartz and this is a non jewish friend and he said it was one of the most profound in chilling experiences that they've ever had. I felt that. When i went to jaba every time yager sham in jerusalem just just like brought to my knees every time. Just the the trustees. And look i'll be honest i wasn't it's not the same but The national civil rights museum in in in memphis. It's at the lorraine hotel where martin luther king agena was shot and so they still have the room intact and then the museum is built around and obviously he's not six people too but when you visited you walk away just the embarrassed for your country. Just you're just sitting there going like how to granted mike. I'm is like your family like we. You either treated people with respect you know or or unc. The light of day right but you just you look like how how. How do people have that within them and humana and the holocaust is just two completely different level. I i do want to do it. I just don't know like emotionally not realized still. Don't think i'm prepared for it. But it's like one of the things that you got. I have this discussion with my kids. Because i have three children. And the mom is not jewish and You know to go to a jewish day school and one says she's nastiest one says bruce jesus and then they're sisters like you know i believe in god i can't really figure out and i try and tell them like listen i i don't actually doesn't actually bother me if you're not jewish..

"You can do that but in terms of how you carry yourself when you come into the as assistant coach. When would you get to work. You know what was great as an assistant coach I worked for guys who were very. Even though they're all different kind of lets you they want you to get the job done so you had to be self motivated you had to be just you know motivated driven internally to go get to get the job done they. Maybe didn't have a set office our time. But i enjoyed getting in their early. I i was. I'm an early morning guy under cal you guys did. You guys have like a a recruiting meeting every day or adding a lot of times. We've meet we've dinner go to dinner or late night thing. He you know he was. He would drink Dunkin donuts coffee all time and at night. We have a late night meeting late in the evening. You know or getting a meal going to get a bite eating you. A lot of our meetings were i mean. We'd sometimes during the day but a lot of the meetings in the evenings and we would just do that. Were coach olsen. You know a lot of the meetings were in. Were in the late morning early afternoon. But you know what was interesting in the meetings Both those guys you know they. They wanted to meet to be organized. But there wasn't a lot of wasted time either. They can move. Both guys. were very busy at the level. John calipari lute olson rat. They had other things going on her life at a very high level other than just basketball time. What did i miss this on student. I one but i do. I want to circle back to you. I thought here's eddie sutton did what i thought was genius to relate to the players but to get to know the players we had a role in stillwater. You had to come to the office once a day. It come in and sign a piece of paper that you made eye contact with somebody on staff if they were there. If not just come to the front end signed to see merit. Mary draper who who ran the office. Right and i thought it was great because you always they. They felt like they always knew where you were always had a handle on what was going on your life and lot of times. You wouldn't really talk about anything special dislike. Hey what's going on with your day service. You know maybe. Are you get in the gym. You get one end getting to work out in whatever but a lot of times that is kind of to be s and around. But i thought that was away. And then every once allow coach we come in. Sit on the couch in our locker room. And watch like we had like beavis. And butthead martin was on back in the day right like martin lawrence and they would watch you. Watch that stuff. You'd ask questions and maybe like five ten minutes but you would feel like he would know what was going to life. What little since. John calipari had those guys connect with the younger generation. What was interesting was at arizona. Arizona was different setup at the time that memphis arizona offices were over. There was no so. It's time when i was at the university of arizona at the offices had a big glass window that looked down onto the floor. Everything was in mikhail center..

"You know for luke. Luke walton I think the experience he had with me in college probably Showed him. I don't probably don't want to be a college coach. A lot of thirty lock. It was during the lockout to lock up. But but but i had them involved in recruiting and he was great with the players but he did not enjoy recruiting and he was a good recruiter people. He was book that he's good with people but he wasn't being on the phone all the time and and and going through all that that wasn't something that that that was a passion form but but but he's a very good coach. I think from that time here. And i don't want to speak for luke but i think he felt. Hey i i've been through that experience love the nba and we're damon. Who's done a an and luke stunning. I thought he looked at a great job with the lakers. He's done a great job with the kings. I kings are young and those guys are going to continue to get better. And i know the future's bright with sacramento. I'm so happy. That because i think sacramento is going to be a playoff team in twenty two In the twenty two season and then damon stoudamire has done just an incredible job at pacific. I mean just awesome job. I mean taking some over literally at night at starting over at zero in how he's built up program in what he's done. He's been coach of the year in the league. And so yes both. Luke walton made a lot of. They don't need the coaching jobs but they love coaching. They're great coaches. They're they're great with people and they both are very good people and so to see both our successes in You know Damon stoudamire. She get the trailblazers job. I mean i. I don't see why. I don't see why portland doesn't higher. I think game is really good coach. And and he's played in portland. He knows the nba players level. You know. And i think he'd be a great and i'm not again. I'm not speaking for damon. I just think he'd be a great. Hire the trailblazers i. So here's a need for part two guy i need. We need to discuss memphis georgia tech best recruiting stories including point guard last year. I love the hair and the future. Okay so you got a little time to prep for and and we'll we'll we'll do it. I really appreciate your time. You've been more than generous. And thanks for doug. I really appreciate it. You know i. I think about you and your family and and I'm always always happy. And i and i always said this and you have a great gig at what you do and you're very good at what you do. I think you'd be a good coach if you've ever. You are basketball whether you never really wanted to get the coach. I've had conversations offline about wanting to be a coach not again. I don't want to speak for you but I do know your love and passion for the game. And i think you'd be a great coach. If you ever decided to go into that avenue i appreciate. You never wanna hire me. "We're we're for the like that. The streets a you to become part of it. And self destruct and and make things work worse and become like a minister sidey and i was on earth and you know it was something that would just wants to be a good person. I just wanted to be somebody other than just kids as often kid or this kid street chair. That don't go to school. I wanted to be something else. You mentioned you were thirteen And you mr mr lou. How did it happen. How how change. How are right. This story So stuff on one brother he was he was he was the big time. St would after he finished playing basketball. Or whatever right the big time street. Though so i was selling drugs and i was with the guy that i was working for at the time and my cousin actually saw potential enemy. Because this this thirteen years old this is when i i grew like six inches one summer. I just got really poll. He said a five hectare over here again. I'm gonna kill everybody over here. These guys are my friends. And and i believe he meant to because i see him to lot of the in the streets already so in order for me to protect my friend have to stop doing what i was doing. So after that situation. I was on the base. I was on the basketball court playing baseball. But i was playing by myself ahead of bunch of baseballs thought the ball in a swing with the bat. Yeah so i was. I was just working on that. And then my mentor. He was on a another basketball. That was supposed to other basketball court and he came over to me and he was like what you wanna do what you wanna do your life. Do you wanna play basketball or baseball. And i was just like. I was just trying to stay out of trouble. I don't know what i wanna do. And then like all right coming over here to the basketball court. And i'm gonna do some but you and just see if the lakers just see if you like it and and the rest of the test. wow okay. What about school. I how do you go from 'cause like i had. Tj transat on this. He was about that age and his mom was strung out music. Oklahoma city learned started selling drugs and he never really figured out the school thing until he got to junior college. You figured out. What high school at at lincoln up figured election You know my my store is pretty deep Have to a lot of like teachers. Even though when i was self destructing they they. They didn't like stop me under the ground they were they were kind of really uplifting. You know what. I'm saying that my my personal teachers for grade or fifth grade six all the way up to eighth grade at i went to the school and sullivan and it was a nurturing. School was something that i needed and all the teachers there from by matthew just my english teachers to my spanish even the principals they were just helping me emotionally. What the stuff. That i was dealing with so i have to give credit to them and they were helping me and pushing me make sure i get to to high school so fast at the highest freshman. Yeah i get back to some of my habits. you know. we're not going to class not going for whatever and my english teacher. My english teacher became my mom to this day. She told me. I was burge a failing class and she said listen. You're gonna fail the class and never come at west known to all the world but every time you come to class always sitting back and you sit on top. And i was like i sit on top but that's because i can't fit under the come to tall so she got a kick out of that and she said so. I'll pass you if you pick one of these books. So she had some books. Yeah like the great gatsby. She had A magic johnson book and it was another book. She said if you if you re one of these books and do a book report and and in front of the class told the class about your book before. And that's what i've done. I read a magic johnson book. And i did it as she passed and that that happened like in march like the next month in april. She had a meeting with my my My mom sebastian's mom and my grandmother. She can take me in into a house with her husband to help me out with academic and life in general. That's the braverman right. So they ravens take you in so now what you haven't had structure really that much in your life right so you're in high school. And how did you react. What was their structure like. NBA Campus Intel: Lakers' Offensive Woes Continue in the Bubble

"Thing about the bubble is I think it's GonNa. Be Really hard to execute your primary offense. If you will 'cause is way more indepth scouting of every team because you can literally go and see those teams in the bubble and they're all on TV and you have plenty of time to. Track things and check things out may make for uglier place more physical playoffs where these games, the defense sometimes is optional for much of the game. But I I guess I'm not a sold in Lakers and clippers and bucks even though I still think the Lakers clippers and bucks will be the Ford. Three of the fourteen remaining obviously the one thing with it's it's interesting as Ben? Simmons tweaks his knee right where you start to think to yourself wait I thought that that Joel embiid was going to be the injury plagued. One Simmons was one who had the back back issue before Kovic shut things down and now he tweaks a knee. Meanwhile, you got embiid who doesn't seem to be happy with anybody. Such a talent team but one that doesn't seem to have the ability to kind of get right but dude embiid is so talented. WHOA. So crazy talented I do think generally in the NBA now the jazz shake Milton playing the point gives them a viable scoring weapon I still like him on not nearly as much if Ben Simmons but you know they do al Horford but it would. It feels like it would kill there. Any chance to come out of the east. If you don't have been Simmons,

"One of the unfortunate situations is that with being let go and March During the middle of a pandemic is that The No coaching jobs up. You know and and so I was one of the few fortunate how about if we put it that way wants to grow in the middle of the pandemic And so what what Do I. I'm not a guy that sits still well and so I'm in the process of trying to figure out what I'm going to do for the next year And and whether or not I really do stay in coaching. And so the to cut all the way through a really long story the thing that kept coming back with podcast people kept telling me started podcast because of some of the observations. You just got up about referees like I WanNa pill back some of the layers of the basketball world of College. It'll be basketball centric but it will focus a little bit more on the X. Centric than just basketball. So I'm GonNa Talk. I'm going to talk with coaches certainly around the country but get into more of the personal. Don't WanNa talk coach's wives you know what what's it like to what liked to sit up in the stands and hear people screaming at your husband. You know what's it like when you what's it like Ling you When your husband loves player and you don't think he's very good You know kind of thing be. We'll get into officiating world so anyway. That's one of our big philosophies that I've I've had here at Western Michigan and developed his next question. It's a metaphor for Life I. It's also obviously applicable in the basketball world. No matter what happens yes to get to the next possession if he scored blocking you gotta get on them and you know same thing in life you know you get like from a job or God forbid death in your family Eventually you gotta get to the next possession and so the podcast will be called an expedition. with Steve Hawkins and I'm in the process. I'm trying to do things that get doing right. I have no idea what kind of microphone to by You know I had no idea. What a pop pat was. I don't know any of these things so I'm in the process of trying to figure that out right now but we think we have a guest lineup We have some guys that are ready to go. And and I'm really excited about the real excited about it but Yeah it's GONNA be a way to cut back and then open to do some games hoping to get behind the microphone and do some games. We have a basketball season this year. I can't wait can't wait to hear it. I would love love to be a guest La- last thing. How do how have you handled especially that first conversation when you come home? You've you've been a place twenty years you know it's all your two girls right. That's all they ever knew as Western Michigan Bronco Basketball. And your wife. How do you like you know you've handled with players before you know giving them disappointing news? Whatever but when it's your wife who has been through all of it you know the good the bad and your kids. That's all they ever know is Bronco Basketball. How do you handle that at home? I'm it was. It was very difficult especially with the kids My wife and I we knew for awhile gives me my my wife and I knew for awhile that this was a possibility. there was The support was starting to go They did not from your contract two years ago when I was up for renewal and in and the school is in one and is in some serious financial trouble and so cutbacks. Coming and Major cutbacks were coming. We are being told by black director tall sports then this was before the pandemic so when the pandemic actually hit. Now it's now it's you know probably three or four or five times worse but it was still a possibility and we knew that But I was probably getting expensive for the cutbacks that were getting ready to to happen and And so but at the same so for me personally because of some of the things we talked about that earlier. Where where you know. You're having to go in and fight with the Athletic Director President. Every day about your program and what you need to succeed in the team When it got let go. It was like okay well. There's some relief that I don't have to do that anymore. You know I became happy and now I've got another set of problems But but getting out of a loser getting out of a losing situation now has just occurred. They've made the decision for me Now telling my kids. That's all different thing. You're right because when I tell them that we're no longer going to be a western Michigan. My daughter Emily. Who's nine and my other daughter lists seven in the might of a fourteen year old steps on Y- The tears Were really really difficult to handle that. Explain that this is and you gotta spend it. You know to your own family. This is going to be a good thing. Daddy's GonNa be home more I'm I'm not. I'm not going to be on. The road is much That part of things one of that. That was the single hardest thing that I had to do. Is To watch your your family break into tears and then the other hardest part was just. The players Was a very emotional locker room. I don't think they expected it to happen. And so we also have a fourteen kids lives and their families that go up in the air with us. All their futures become uncertain. You basically have. We had to seniors basic left. Twelve free agents. You mentioned transfers to you. Have Twelve free agents in today's world as well two of those kids even after They named the head coach. The new head coach Who was a former assistant Even after they named him we had two players The decide to leave Bannon Johnson's going to Minnesota and and Mike Flowers is going to South Alabama. Those were two leading scores. So it's very difficult to watch. Everybody goes through all that. But yes your family By far the most difficult thing with the kids All survive I'm survivor when it comes to that stuff and really really looking forward to the next year. The podcast whatever comes my way and then we'll get the next spring. If I'm really enjoying what I'm doing then I'll stay and If if I'm not enjoying it and and And coaching presents itself again. I don't think coaching I know. Coaching is not out of my blood. Saving Your Your Dad. forever they had In in your life so that that part of things is still there for me for sure also hockey or good man. You're even coach or big good. Coaching better man. I really appreciate you joining me. I can't wait to be on your podcast and to find out what's next I'm guessing it'll be a sideline somewhere in the in the future. In the meantime take care of those Kiddos and your wife. Thanks so much for joining me. You're the best friend appreciate you. Having me on enjoyed it be short. A catch the live edition of the Doug. Gottlieb show weekdays at three PM Eastern noon Pacific. Great to catch up with Steve Hawkins. Really good dude who obviously like a traumatic time right like you go through you. Go through getting fired. I guess the good news. Is You go through getting fired. But all these years you had spent working in grinding out in the road recruiting and now you get to spend time with your kids. And now he's done it and we'll see what happens in the future. Hope hope you enjoyed a chance to know his story which is really amazing. "We do a great interviews and have good stuff for you That you can always get What one last thought? My brother talked about something. I'm a big believer in. And what makes Jordan Great? And what made the Bulls great and frankly makes all kinds of the the best of the best the best. I still think the three CS and he talked about confidence. We don't as as broadcasters as analysts. Talk enough about it but confidence it can come and go like honestly. Lebron has lost. Its confidence in his jump. Shot at at certain times and then got it back. But that's what happened in Dallas. That's what happened. You know at times against the Spurs. They've deer to shoot And that's what happened times. You know it didn't really happen with the warriors but I think it was keyed. Maybe lost confidence in his teammates. The one thing that changed for Jordan was he gained confidence in his team. Mate confidence conditioning conditioning and conditioning isn't just are you in great shape. Can you play at your best at the end of a game? And Look we. We ask ridiculous things of of Lebron at times because he's not surrounded we're told with the right kind of talent but he's running out of gas. He's running a gas before crazy about Lebron is he hasn't doesn't get hurt. The exception the groin last year Jordan seemed to be able to play through fatigue better than anybody in his era and maybe anybody ever and then culture and their culture was they played great defense their best player demanded that they play hard and played their best and played great defense in addition to which they had a great culture from like and I know some people will have terrible culture. They're making fun of Jerry Krause. Yes but all kind of worked together. They they you know. They had the breakfast club where they all worked out in the morning. Jordan is in Pippen and Harper worked out together in the morning and get stronger. They had a hierarchy within the team their best player and their second best player down. We got along but played off each other really really well like their culture worked culture confidence and conditioning and by the way Jordan. Winning a sprint is just something that like. I watch Allen Iverson Shaquille O'Neal and you think of shack not being in shape for a good portion of early parts of seasons or even late in his career shot could have been the most dominant player in the history of the NBA. Didn't mean he didn't have an incredible career wasn't dominant but not as dominant could have been. He was not only the biggest. He was the athletic unbelievably talented gifted basketball player. But just WanNa be shack which God bless him won four titles hall of Famer has a statue outside the staples although a little torn on that because he played for the Celtics. Unless you can do that but whatever but he could have been the you know like the greatest big man ever. I believe that but it didn't have that work ethic that Kobe did and I didn't have the off season in practice. Work Ethic of the all time greats. Carmelo anthony same thing wasn't willing never been wanting to defend you now has entrusted teammates enough devolve as a player and so come anthony. Who for my money? There was a stretch of time. Five years there where he was the best pure score in the League didn't win anything because of it. Even the move to the Knicks which was a trade instead of waiting for the off season. You know I know there was gonna be a lockout or whatever we can get into that another podcast but but these things done to himself or as Jordan bought in the idea of. Hey if I'm not good enough even going back to high school. I'm going to get better. I'm not ready for the NBA. I'm going to get better. He wasn't a good enough shooter early in his NBA career. He got better when he became a good enough shooter. He didn't trust his teammates and didn't have a big enough body. He did and got better culture confidence conditioning. I to next week. You'RE GONNA to love it. We'll recap the entire series. Hope you enjoyed it. I'm Doug Gottlieb this all some podcasts are light fun and fluffy my podcast. Isn't I mean unless you'd think.

"It's a hard okay. Here's last one. And then I'll let you go and you got you got you got to be the pe coach your kids okay. You mentioned that any time when you watch things everybody can get better one thing that you personally want to improve on from this year next. Good question 'cause there's several things that that they don't want to get better but I don't know if I need to tell you So so so so. We'll just keep it by the numbers. I think Our assistant turnover ratio indefinitely. Get better and that will improve our offenses efficiency The second thing That can get better. Is Our free throw shooting down. The stretch wasn't near what we were capable of. We we should have been a seventy five to eighty percent shooting team. And that's that's gotta get fixed Or get they get back to where it should be and then The third thing with that Defensively I know we did some different things this year and we instilled a lot of different stuff so as a coach. You Never WanNa throw in too much. You WanNa whatever you do you WANNA do. Well I With the personnel being Somewhat similar will be able to add some more things to the defense To even make it more effective now. Because it's kind of like once you put the the foundation in NYC and start at enforce layers to things and Since we don't have a lot of turnover We'll be able to do that. And that's why most people have predicted top five depending on what what happens transpires With other teams in in our guys. Well I I can. I can offer one outside perspective on on a thought yes okay. So here's my door. We ask you just give it. I do but but it's a podcast. I'll send you a tax. Hey I saw this. I just the this is. I think your program has turned the corner from trying to I. I don't I don't think the common fan and and common fans probably mindlessness. Podcasts is a lot of hoop guys right. We got one hundred thousand downloads. Some of them. I think the common fan doesn't realize how big winning the League is and it's bigger than any league but in the big twelve because Kansas done what they've done your folks so focused on winning the league but I do think that during your season because now you are transitioning from a team that you want to win the League to one that he got a chance to win the whole thing this conversation. I had with Tony Bennett after the UNBC loss which is I think you should take different moments during the year to try things. Whether it's a different defensive look different defense at different offense of different lineups because what I felt like happening. You guys were so good. You know you have three or four guys and go get buckets and then a guy you know one or two guys that can get it off the rim if they miss and slowly like you said people were adjusting to you and you had yet to make the adjustment to their adjustment. I almost feel like you throw. Maybe not artificial adversity towards you but instead of focusing on winning every game doesn't mean you don't want to win the game but spend time in the first half to throw in a different lineup because you know markets and foul trouble. Tcu How can you? Can you play left-handed because you're going to when you get to the NCAA TOURNAMENT? Someone's getting at six is going to get hurt. Someone's getting the foul trouble and you may have some some lineup and almost instead of trying to prepare to win just a big twelve thing about what it's going to take to win six games in March and I would say take a chance at the at the one three one that she had only taken a look at practice. Take a chance plan The mayor the tall white kid who bouncy like look at him at the five and play five out and see what that looks like. That's just an idea for my side to one. I think it will some of those guys that got set into their roles of being the bench. It'll reinvigorate them but to to give you the confidence to give me the confidence to try something to not be not be oh shit. We are in foul trouble. What do we do now? We know we're going to do. We're GONNA switch this lineup and everybody starts nodding their head that would be I my out completely outside uneducated on what actually goes inside. Your coaches office gave it to Tony after after the first round loss of national championships. When my my thing with my thing with Tony was he's like he he and he was so down. He's so down on himself and he felt like he let the kids down more than anything. And he's like you know we didn't have hunter and the court release shrinks and I was like how did tried to play small without De'andre before he's like no he's like. Why would I was like because just because you know this? And you know he had lineups and I also thought he the blocker. Movers great and it's great to fall back on. But I said you to challenge yourself to some new offensive ideas. Because you have different weaponry and I mean like I didn't tell him to go and run bolstering continuity but he did he ran. Nba sets. I mean look. He's a MAG. You guys are all magnificent coaches and it doesn't mean that any one thing. I would just suggest that I every NCAA tournament. I've played in. Something goes wrong or something goes amiss and teams that are prepared for kids figure it out or a guy steps up and make shots does the teams that win because point great point so I go next year when we do one of those things and we lose a game. Don't get on the air in criticize me though you listen. That's okay. It's okay though if your mind you're like you locker room you can just tell you guys like hey look guys. That one's on me I. I tried some things I screwed up knowing your mind that maybe it's not even UNU- because you're playing play the long game like you're not getting fired at Baylor next year you're going to be good at the end of the year next year. You know what's it? GonNa take to be great and maybe it takes to be great is when you play Kansas in the big twelve tournament. You show them some. You're able to go to a lineup that they can adjust to. You know what I mean. And you're one hundred percent right about that as far as people sick injured foul trouble happening. Yeah Yeah and and the ones. I can adjust adjust. Listen I marvel at what you've been able to do? And how consistent that you've been able to do it? You have a lot of fans in my industry and and how you consistently been able at Baylor to do it and do it the right way. I really appreciate time now. Baker Mayfield clarifies what he said about Daniel Jones to GQ

"It's new article in juke g. c._q. Where baker mayfield said. I cannot believe the giants took. Daniel jones blows my mind. Some people were thinking that's where people go wrong. They forgot. You've got a win. Win course baker one in college. Gale jones did not but i mean the point could if we wanted to decipher wins and losses. There's lots of great college quarterbacks that were drafted. They've got opportunities that have not been great pro quarterback danny waffle you know i mean look just even more recent like vince young i i vince young matlock venture was rookie of the year he he might so he will heed one early like it. It gets harder not easier. Yes it gets hard because now okay now. We know what you do now. We'll go back and watch the chargers film where you know that line just wants to stand you up. Make you make you stay in the pocket and throw over the top because you're small and you can't see and we'll see we'll see what the ravens did. Look baker mayfield was good last year. Let's act like he tore up. The league behan touchdown receptions against the good teams they he played against. They beat up on the bengals. The bengals the team at the time they played the bengals. The bengals were on track to have the worst defense in the history of the league and they played the ravens twice the chargers chargers steelers the texans the broncos broncos to make the playoffs char steelers did neither but those are the five actually six best defense played against ten touchdowns love interceptions fifty seven percent completion percentage. There were two and four now if you if you give context and say hey cleveland won one game in two years for the got there and look at how people view them now. Oh that's fair and people believe baker mayfield's gonna damn good quarterback bliss on act like he went out and did what pat mahomes did last year exact same guy no missed completely really different now. The the thing with banco is all eyes are on cleveland so all eyes on you you better give him something because if if you fall on your face all these wide you draft daniel jones all these <hes> do johnson deal talking about luke johnson's money. Oh you know hugh took a job in cincinnati. I don't like him for all this stuff that you're doing all these theatrics they don't get thrown back in your face and so if you can dish it out you better be able to handle it when it comes back and and that's what i don't know if he understands that could possibly happen. I'm sure he's not thinking they're going to fail but to understand. You got a lot of prime time games. You better perform

But we finished last hour talking about the rockets warriors game six tonight getting into game seven, of course, playing without. Kevin Durant was officially ruled out for the rest of the series. I like the Rockettes tonight. I mentioned a few minutes ago. I don't think the warriors get off the plane, and they wait for Sunday and try to win at home. Because I mean, look that's how they probably looked at this series the entire time. We don't have to win in Houston. I mean it's much. We don't have to win their when they're up to zip. We don't have to win. We know we can just come back. Protect home court, and we can move on. But I like the Rockettes tonight elect the rockets in game seven as much as this is still the same warriors that three years ago, we watch them turn the NBA on their ear with splash brothers and Draymond Steve Kerr system, and it was incredible. And and it changed the NBA. And and it brought us something in. Credible. This is not the same warriors team from three years ago. This is not because a staff and clay and drain on this is because three years ago, you mentioned the bench that they had. And it was that guys would come off the bench, and it was Shaun Livingston twelve and seven and it was David west coming off the bench and Harrison Barnes, and it was guys conjoined with. It was most most Speights was was that David Wests was on the the first the first team when he was four years ago. Now, he was on the now he was on the the Kevin Durant team. I believe there. But he was there for the nicely. Short memory went with the Spurs to try. He turned down ten million dollars to stay with India went with the Spurs, and then they lost. And he never got to. I I believe I believe the first the first championship year and Barbosa was there as bar Boza, alienates, Festas Ely, Livingston and Igwe dolla. Right. And then Igwe Dalla was part of their death lineup. And he was the MVP because they left him wide open..

New NY Mets GM says Tim Tebow earned promotion to Triple-A

"Plant this past season. I really believe that I think they were just going to say, look, let's reward him. We're not doing anything. Let's bring him up, and let's let him play. But I'm looking at at the split for him. So he's he's thirty one. He hit two seventy three. He struck out one hundred and three times with six home runs is the left fielder in AA. I get the feeling that there's going to be Tibo mania you're going to have it in spring training. And I wouldn't be surprised if Tim t-boz on the major league roster. Man. What's that say about your team your thirty one years of age? And I I give him a ton of credit because it's the hardest thing to do in sports. And do it at that age with this much separation from when you used to play here you are year four and he's committed he's having fun. But I I can't see these numbers that warrant him being on the roster. And unless you're saying, hey, we want to give you a reason to come

Atlanta Falcons to sell $5 craft pale ale at home games this season

"Falcons. Are shocking the sports world with a five dollar craft beer. They're going to start selling five dollar craft beers at, their regular season game starting September sixteenth against the Panthers also any. Home playoff games five dollars for a craft beer when normally if you want to Craft beer at, a stadium eighteen dollars. Seventeen dollars you wanna crappier, to stadium for football game yeah. You're not, gonna you're not getting Here's? My, here's my question if you're listening to us in your? Falcon fan or you've been? To Mercedes Benz stadium or? You like beer no it's more of you've been there are the ticket, prices are they, getting you anyway you know what I'm saying like they might not be getting you at the. Food prices which they've they've put they've they've lowered in comparison? To the rest of the National. Football League and the craft beer prices but are you pay more for tickets, and more for parking so it ends up being awash. So like in Vegas when the when the waitress. Brings you a free beer meanwhile you're gambling. And, losing like twenty. Dollars a minute Tip anyway sure right, sure, it's like three but it's not really free yeah So is is that the case with Mercedes Benz stadium the tickets are ten, dollars more, than they ever would be or fifteen, dollars more than they were you know going back to, the old Georgia Dome but the beer, price, in the food prices are less but there's many, people who will say okay if, the if the ticket is fifteen dollars more but if the beers. Five dollars I will have more, beer to alleviate the cost of the tickets so if. I have four, beers that's twenty dollars and. The extra ticket was fifteen dollars. I'm, coming. Ahead. Five dollars in, the deal people use that. Philosophy

New York Jets GM Mike Maccagnan praises 'unflappable' Sam Darnold

"I still paying for an office visit or, oh, well, then it'd be upset. Yes, I'm still paying for that. Meanwhile, so Josh Allen in line to start Sam darnold also potentially line to start after darnold. Second game didn't go quite as well as the first game, but still he did some good things and the latest reports out of New York late last night early this morning out of the jets camp is that Donald is trending to start. He got more reps than anybody else at the first team in practice yesterday, third, preseason game coming up against the giants today. I know you're not a big fan of him starting right away. The jets are my team and I'm nervous what you're going to say about this. I actually think they got the best quarterback of lot. True. Like I think the giant screwed up. I think the Browns screwed up. I do. And so that said you like, well, why wouldn't you start them right away. I know they play on paper easier competition early than they do late. And I know and it's three games in ten days and he'd get a ton of reps, but do that offensive line sucks that offense align is awful and they're playing with at the right guard, and they're left tackle in their last preseason game, and he constantly under duress. And some of that is good. Like you want him to see some adversity. You want to see if he can process what he's seeing. And then when he's when he has to move when he has to adjust when he has to manipulate the pocket, can you then still kind of lock in on where everybody's supposed to be an how they're supposed to be right. That is that's kind of next level stuff. Yes. But I also remember David Carr, and I fear not even not even getting hurt like, I'm not that kind of masochist. It's more I fear that he doesn't get a chance to set his feet to catch his breath that he's that that he begins is NFL career on the run on the move and it hurts his his overall upside. Yeah, I, I guess I fear. The David Kerr effect that he can tell you more what this, what it looks like in the sky. They can't what it looks like in the end zone. 'cause that offense line is, I'm gonna say at best one of the five worst in football, you know, the tight end group is nameless the, it's not even if you had enough of line. I'm not sure who you're going to hand the football too. I think the wide receivers little bit better than people think they are like Robbie Anderson's gotta be incredible considering what Robbie Anderson said to the cop and he got pulled over. Sure, right lane just still play. It's still be on that team saying that to a police officer, he's gotta have a supreme supreme out of town. So it's not that I don't like Donald. I loved Arnold. I think he's, I think he's the nuts. I think he's the deal. I just you've seen that often. So it's awful and three games in ten days and Dusit can be thrown exotic blitzes after him. And I feel like they'll be bad habits and a lot of sacks and possibly some injuries feel like you're better off. Just wait. He's gonna be your. Back for the next decade. You don't have to play him day one because once you start him now you can't pull them. Whereas if you start McGown he was good. Last use fine. Last year's fine. Then you start Bridgewater when out sudden like you saw in the second preseason game, I think you can get an asset for bridge win. Somebody needs a quarterback. They'll trade for Bridgewater. You get a second or you get it third round pick or you get a player that you need enough into lime in that you need in order to fill up your coffers so that you can't protect

Malcolm Butler refuses to be defined by his Super Bowl moments

"To the Doug Gottlieb show Everywhere we go last Multiple months ago now look at my personal perspective in the Malcolm Butler thing is. Some of the comments I actually think more of dollar checks. More of the patriot then before the Malcolm Butler call he saying is everything that I. Did on Super Bowl Sunday was give us the best If you don't if you don't agree with. That that's fine I've been to Hey you think that this is going, to affect the patriots because fans want, and there's the assumption that players want if this is the worst thing it's this is the one question title actually think it's the one question, for you think this is the, one question. For the patriots Godly that's, insane weekdays at three pm eastern noon Pacific on Fox Sports radio dining off during the. Civil war it was called soldier's heart after World War Two they call it gross stress. Reaction it's been called shell shock war neurosis and battle fatigue today, we call it post traumatic stress disorder and it affects one out. Of every five warriors returning from battle in Iraq and Afghanistan not a wound that you can see though it can, have an even more significant impact post. Traumatic, stress disorder can prevent warriors from living.

Kyrie Irving of Boston Celtics comments on MVP

"And he'll text rod and sam coming to la in the bottle joining i just think i still think at the end of the date they're going to get both of them i just that's my cut but i don't know i don't know and it could could change tomorrow and the lakers don't know they don't i don't think they know but i do think you're right about this i do think lebron pg probably already know don't you i mean don't you think the area know what's going on i think everybody i think the ross everybody going through the motions that was the whole thing so that that was the thing magic yesterday could have been doing i wrote this it could be a victory speech or concession speech out of what he was doing but yeah i think he's probably you probably you probably already know you're probably right i i listen i have friends in the lakers and they don't know they honestly legitimately don't know but i do think that lebron knows it's just a question of making sure all everything everyone who says they gonna do something does what they say so i i think up here that's why i'm reluctant to go after magic for often next summer because i think it's going to happen i think he'll be a press conference in but couple of weeks it'd be crazy but if it doesn't i maybe yeah it'll be tough it'll be it'll be tough sledding form you know with if they get shut out somehow we'll be good thanks join us seaman bill the la times i'm doug gottlieb for colin here on the heard let's get to outstanding hard working and debonair newsmen john goulet on the news this is the heard line news garrity by two by tomorrow they'll be like nine compliments nt twenty updates the amazing i appreciate it so kyrie irving said he's happy that james harden i'll happy for james harden he won the mvp but he mentioned on hot ninety seven in new york leave it was the morning that the really should be to be in the league take listen away said mvp is hard to gauge nowadays like because now you have the people's mvp and you have like the nba's mvp you know like mvp in your mind the people's mvp was was definitely james okay the nba mvp was definitely braun do you agree with cairo irving that really it's kind talk to others this week that it's yeah the fans and well that's your the fans it's like we never do the most valuable we don't bring the value that that's the hard definition to really get clarity on it's who had the best season and i gotta tell you that i came hard and had a better season you can't tell the story of the cavalier season without talking about how dysfunctional it was for good portion of time and yeah they got together late but they still end up with fourth best record in the eastern conference when half the teams are dumping games games a better player had a better season and i think kyrie irving in many smart people are struggling like most valuable why aren't we actually doing the valuable like a lot of things that does the meaning doesn't actually equate to what it is we park on a driveway and drive on a parkway doesn't make sense right smartest thing i've ever said so according to an article from espn there is pressure building on the lakers to trade for kawhi leonard apparently this is due to the fact that paul george coming to the lakers is not a lock and they feel like they have to entice lebron do you really now this was from whoa jr and windhorst and trust the people that spin do you really feel that there is pressure now for them to get that trade done soon look i i do think that there's the fear is the fear is paul george situation only even better right if you're is really boston comes in and like look good boston celtics championships and he'd be part of a team that's going to be good for a long long time so i think the philadelphia boston is team so there's the thought that the paul george you go to a place you say i'm only staying for year but you end up wanting to stay from oriented liking it oklahoma is that way i actually get paul george you go there like.
