An Apple/Hyundai Car?

"Hundai has confirmed that it is in early discussions with apple on collaborating to develop a self driving car. But in case you're jumping ahead to apple may be buying hyundai or anything like that. This seems to be just a partnership right now and also hyundai says apple is talking to several carmakers about a bunch of things right now so quoting. Cnbc we understand. That apple is in discussions with a variety of global automakers including hyundai motor as the discussion is at its early stage. Nothing has been decided a representative from honda motor told. Cnbc's cherry king. The statement followed a local report from the korean economic daily. That said apple suggested the tie up and honda motor was reviewing the terms. The report said both electric vehicle production as well as battery development were included in the proposal. And that the car could potentially be released in two thousand twenty. Seven apple declined to comment on the report and quote at the exact same time in bloomberg mark. Gurman has a piece up saying yes. Apple is developing an autonomous electric vehicle. But the timeline for release. His sources say is five to seven years. Also this quote a key. Differentiator would be apple's ability to integrate. Its driving system a pricey initiative that has spurred the company to develop its own software sensor hardware chip technologies. The goal is to let a user input their destination and be driven there with little or no other engagement. According to the people familiar with the project apple doesn't manufacture its own products and it will likely take the same approach with a vehicle. It's unclear which company would assemble the car. Though in its first attempt about five years ago apple worked with engineers from magna international a major auto industry contract manufacturer apple has continued to investigate building. It's self driving car system for third party car partners rather than its own vehicle the people said and it could ultimately again abandoned. Its own car. "Is out there especially because Baltimore is a hotbed of human trafficking in the country? Now what is it that These humans are being trafficked for. It's sex slavery because that's usually kind of what goes along with the suggestion of. Hey Ron traffic human trafficking You know you don't really hear too much about people being trafficked victor. Go dig a ditch somewhere. It's usually associated with sex slavery. I mean yeah. Has Anybody else heard anything else about human trafficking decides sex slavery traditional slavery very to a child soldiery also right when you say traditional slavery. You don't mean picking cotton in a field with the promise of being forced to work. At some Josh Drug Doug Field or sweatshop things like okay. Well Yeah I mean. Of course there is the human trafficking of The coyotes who take humans across the border shirt. And you know they've been hired to do that. And then in some cases they are sold into some form of slavery or indentured servitude on the other side. So that I guess there is aspect but I agree. It's it's usually about you know sex sex trafficking and I don't know I can't say for sure I mean most of ided live near Baltimore but most of what I know about Baltimore I've learned from the wire by Baltimore's a high crime area and I see that but you know does that mean that every white fan is filled with filled with a Sex trafficked women most likely you know any sex straffing you have. It wouldn't just be totally white. Would have some sort of government insignia. If people people actually did think this the net would actually encourage some guys to approach white man's in the hopes that they would find some a sex traffic to people there so they could purchase their services. Right I suppose but it so I think that you know it's worth pointing out here if you want to actually reduce human trafficking you don't start a campaign of people freaking out about white vans. "We might have less not necessarily the greatest thing. And speaking of that, we're also hearing that they might have, hey, Siri functionality, and that seems to be backed up by a setup interface that was detected in the IOS twelve point two beta. So it's looking like that functionality may be there as well. And that would be something. I would also be concerned about when it comes to battery life. I would assume apple would not release any of these features unless less they had figured that stuff out. Now, they don't say, but it does seem to me like the launch of apples air pod twos. The airpower mats and the air pod charge. In case would be great at some sort of spring announcement. And I do expect apple to announce their new video streaming service sometime too soon, and I think all those things combined would make an awesome event. So I am going to go out on a limb. Make prediction and say that apple is going to have some sort of spring event. Probably in the April or may timeframe and we will hear all about air pod twos. Airpower air pud charging case. And Apple's new streaming video service along with probably those new ipads, we've been hearing about and meanwhile on that ipad rumor front apple seems to have registered seven unreleased ipad models with the Eurasian economic commit. Database. This is something that they have to do over there prior to the release of any new products. So it does seem to be another indicator that are that there are new ipads on the way we've been talking about those than the fat in the last few episodes of the MAC cast likely new versions of the nine point seven inch ipad and a new update to the ipad mini mini five. Those are expected to be mainly internal revisions were not expecting to see a lot of new features. I had sorta speculated in wondered if we wouldn't see specifically tucked analogies like face ID making it all the way to those pads. It's now looking like that is not going to be a thing. As a matter of fact, there were a also references found by think Steve Trott and Smith of new ipad models, four of them in the IRS twelve point two beta, but he did note that when he found those references there didn't seem to be any en -cation of face ID. On those new models. So that would be the nine point inch the update to the nine point seven CHAI pad and the ipad mini, so it's looking like they're going to stick with touch ID on those models. And also there was a reference in Iowa's twelve point two discovered for that new ipod touch. We also talked about in the last episode there. I had mentioned that maybe it would get an upgrade from touch ID to face ide-, but many astute listeners out there road into point out to me that hey, Adam, you know, what the ipod touch doesn't have any touch ID even currently. And it's looking like that is going to continue with the update there's going to be no biometric features face ID touch ID or otherwise with an updated ipod touch models. So we are expecting all those to be simply spec bumps and possibly designed change. Although that's even looking less and less likely. But at least we'll get a new update. Rated versions of those probably like I'm thinking in some sort of spring update. CNBC is reporting this week that apple has gone through a restructuring of the staff for its Thomas vehicle project, commonly known as project tighten the program, which has been overseen by Bob Mansfield and Doug field who was a former employees of tesla. And prior to that apple and then returned to apple those two guys have been in the program. "I mean, it's it's a really cool apple ad if you will, except for the fact that they're doing group FaceTime or group at the time. Well, according to the release notes, it looks like it is going to come at some future updates, so it's not. It's not a permanent room removal. Again, we saw this with, I think like Apple Pay and some other things way back when. So it's not the end of the world that is eventually coming. But it's out for out for launch of Iowa's twelve, which we're expecting in the fall in the fall is. Okay. Well, I can wait till fall. Oh, well, no. So I was twelve should be officially released right in the fall, September October with the new iphones that were expecting, and then it'll be sometime after that. Oh, I thought I heard group FaceTime was coming in the fall. Okay. Now. Now I'm sad again. I maybe I don't know. We don't know. We never know what apple is going to do, but the point is out for now and that was kind of that bit of news. There's also some ample car project titan news going on Ming quo doing some analysis, and also a former lead engineer at tesla guy named Doug field who was at apple left to go to tesla to work on the model three launch and stuff like that. He is coming back to apple reportedly to work on their autonomy Spiegel system project that has been ongoing back and forth for it looks like almost half a decade. Now, I think they're saying that that project has been mulling around at apple at various forms. Bob Mansfield is the guy kind of in charge of it now, even though he's semi retired, I guess, technical technical way, but they had started. I was supposedly, apple was building a car that was going to be an apple car, and then they pivoted or changed it to Thomas. Of course, all this being totally speculative. And now it's back to, oh, maybe apples building a car. Again in the reason is. Doug field was was big in in launching the model three at tesla and because of his background, the this is where all the speculations coming from because of his background, they're thinking, oh, well, maybe apples. Moving back off the Thomas system where they're just gonna do like carplay thing and sell it to other manufacturers, and they're actually going to produce a car. I have been very vocal here on the mat cast that I think really what Apple's ultimate plan is to build some sort of cars, a service subscription program..

"I think it's only three hundred bucks for the case, but then you know, as much as you want for the card doesn't come card not included. Speaking of returning superstars. Doug field is coming back to apple. He left to go to tesla in two thousand thirteen five years ago. He is now coming back to work with Bob Mansfield. This is a a rumor that John Gruber's reporting daring. Fireball Mansfield, of course, is in charge of the project. Tighten the apple self driving car. So Doug field leaving autopilot from tesla going, he oversees model three production and going back. This all looks fairly fairly straightforward that he lost his position at at tesla. You know, when Elon Musk stepped in to push things forward. And of course he puts them in a position where he's going to wanna leave. I will say that it, you know, the conspiracy theorist in me does say that if I wanted to figure out everything I needed to know about doing a car, I would let one of my engineers coda tesla. And that's asking for a lawsuit. Yeah, that's interesting. That's the rhetoric Herro model of car Thomas car development. I, I, I'm guessing when he guessing that there was a pre-nup involved or the buried before he can contractual stuff going back and forth there. But apple and Tessler. There's kind of a revolving door really between apple tesla. I imagine, and Google and tesla on all these guys Waymo. The problem with all these projects is that they keep changing direction. So like a manufa, excuse me, a senior executive at an automaker will have been talked into seduced into joining apple because they thought they were building a car, and then a year and a half later, they're not building a car. They're building a platform, and now this is not as interesting to that person's before. Sometimes it goes the other way around. So this is such it's so completely influx right now that this is why you're playing musical chairs with engineers and project managers. And I think it's also complicated because you know, what is the future of a car? I think I think we're in a position where we don't even know I when I when Google. Came out with, there's no steering wheel, and you're just you're just going to get in and it's gonna take you. I was like, that is crazy. I am never giving up my steering wheel. And now I've gotten to a point where I'm like, I really don't wanna steering wheel. Like I just want a monitor up there and I just sit back and watch something. And I, I just the more I've thought through it and the more I sat and back Uber's and stuff like that. I'm just like, I don't. I don't need to be able to grab onto that. I just thought pullover on the road. If you're broken. So you know, but but I think that and I think so. I think a lot of folks have had like, do we really spend billions on building a a new, shiny heads up display across our our windshield, or do we just get rid of the windshield? You know? And I and I think that that's the, you know, I think we're in that point where we don't know which way it's going to Brunei can explain this to us. Apple pulls Iowa's twelve betas seven after less than twenty four hours. The rumor is formats issues, and then the group FaceTime the thirty. Two concurrent user FaceTime was also removed from beta seven. The release notes say it will ship in a future software, update this fall. In other words, some this conclusion, maybe it's the FaceTime group chat. This leading to a problem in the IRS twelve. No. I mean, I think those are separate very separate decisions. One is because there was a bug in this bay. That trash performance on on some versions of iphone. So you just you pull the beta, you fix it and you'll be release it as soon as possible. The other one is that similar to the I message sank last year you don't. Apple apple tries to project forward. What are the features that we could finish famously this year they dropped a few features because they wanted to spend take some of the key engineers and spend their time on performance optimization. Like for example, the guy who invented auto layout stopped what he was doing for this for this release and went back and.

Yeah, that's good. Yeah, greasing the wheels. Yes, they're rubbing the engine. Kind of strange. Because we haven't heard a lot about the titan project like they sort of grew quickly and then went dark. They said that this is not even a thing. Yeah, there's nothing behind this. Apple is the best purchaser of Tessa. Right? That would be the most logical company to buy it in your mind, Dave, if you company that would be better. Google Waymo. No Google to engineer, right? They look at the little microbus that they built right. Tesla like apple is sexy like us. Yes, I don't know which I should referring to. Maybe that's the way us is. Who would you rather see Ryan if you had to pick by tesla tests that couldn't be independent and it was Amazon, Google apple. Yeah, those three or Microsoft, which one would you rather say by it if you had to pick, do you do. Dude, you don't have your take on that. I don't know who should do it, who would Ryan like to see I like to see who would be best for the consumer. For me, personally, I would. I'd get most excited about apple because then I would wonder how, how would it integrate with my iphone and MAC book and all these other things? I mean yes of airlines and other things like that. So from a consumer's perspective, I think that's the most exciting having thought about it for five seconds. But yeah, at the same time, it's I also want to see them remain independent. You know, we see these big companies in tech girl, larger and larger and larger, and while I don't fault them, that's like business. That's what they're supposed to do. But more recently, the rumors were that those ambitions were scaled back to something akin to apple, merely designing the OS for self driving cars, but feel returning to apple where he worked previously by the way on max, not cars, but on the hardware side and also under Bob Mansfield by the way, might indicate that a full apple car could still be a possibility. Field left apple to join tesla and twenty thirteen where he oversaw model three production quoting from John Gruber. I wouldn't read too much into any single higher and the employee exchange program between apple and tesla continues to flow in both directions. But I think it's an interesting higher primarily because suggests to me that apple still has an interest in making actual vehicles. Despite reports that the company has scaled back the project to merely make autonomous systems for inclusion in vehicles made by other companies that rumor never really made sense to me anyway, apples modus operandi has always been to make the whole widget. Apple makes products not components field, returning to apple also suggest to me that undermines fields leadership. The titan project has regained its footing after its infamously. Rocky start and quote. Speaking of apple, that Cupertino company has led the way in trying to push us towards a future of digital payments. And of course, efforts from Google Samsung pay pal, then MO square stripe at all of all, been instrumental in pushing us to pay without ever again opening up our wallets, but how much traction has all this effort gotten. I'd say I use Apple Pay once a week at least probably two or three times, but it's not like I see everyone in line ahead of me waving their phones at the cash register. Well, gene Munster has some estimates about digital wallet penetration generally and Apple Pay usage..

"And we're getting word that apple has indicated its rehired Doug field after that executive spent. About five years, of tesla in charge of vehicle engineering higher significant grapple with the, unlikely joining the companies car unit known as project that's a, Bloomberg business flash politics policy power and law continues Okay thank you Greg and the Trump administration has forecast it. Will persuade countries to cut Iranian oil imports by as much as a million barrels a day it's reimposing those energy sanctions in early November this is according to to people familiar with the administration's efforts to choke off Tehran's crude sales and Peter as we were. Talking about earlier, during the, commercial break. There this is going to have some impact a significant impact it's still though. Not what the stated goal was earlier that the the US. Had wanted to. Cut yeah that's right and. The administration of course of course. Try to pressure, Iran to renegotiate the nuclear agreement the president pulling out of it. And of course in the previous under previous sanctions Iran saw its oil exports, to drop significantly and that was one of the reasons why the that around. Decided to negotiate that agreement was trying to, get those sanctions Lifted so since then it has. Seen it soil imports surge but the president. Obviously, tried to wrap all back? In. Let's get, a, little bit more about this Bloomberg. State Department reporter Nick Waddams is joining us now down the line to bring us up to speed. On how this is going to work Nicole. And thank you for taking the time with us on this Friday afternoon I know that there's one official Brian hook who as Peter was just explaining led the efforts, to persuade these countries to stop buying rainy and oil. Said the goal was reducing to zero Iran's revenue from sales of crude where is this plan what. Sort, of path. Is playing going to take, where are, we headed well they they say they're still hard at work through traveling around the. World talking to, allies in countries like China that, are more strategic competitors to get them to. Push down their imports of of Iranian oil so that's very much a work in progress however what what we know now Is that their forecast is that when November fourth comes around in those in those sanctions against Iran go back into place, their forecast is somewhere between seven hundred thousand and a million barrels. Of oil per day? That countries will cut in in imports from Iran? So that's the you? Know, anywhere from about thirty to fifty percents so while that's certainly a big hit for Iran it's it's well below what they have demanded which was that all countries stop all imports of Iranian oil by November. Four and when these sanctions were at their. Most, stringent before the Obama administration Negotiated the six-nation deal with Iran on its nuclear program It was it was a lot Sales where a lot lower reminded. Us, about a of all that well at, the height of the Obama sanctions the US was basically able to take about one point two million barrels of oil per, day off the market from Iran and that was considered the high point. In part because it included Europe Europe was a willing participant in that and a given that they supported pushing Iran to the negotiating table for the. Iran nuclear deal this time around it's unclear how much they're going to be willing. To suspend given that they are they remain in JC peo- away, in the nuclear deal and say they want. Iran to receive benefits from it so whether that will is going to be taken off. The table is a big question, there are some analysts who say there's no, way, it'll happen to others say well European companies are going to have to play along with the US. Because the threat of Sanctions from the United States will be so high And that eventually you'll see that number you know Iranian oil exports will really start to dwindle and and go back. To, those, levels that you saw the Obama administration oh actually you may have just answered my question and wanted to know why, these sanctions on Iran would carry so. Much force but I guess that's it right. There. It's because, the US carries a big stick yeah I mean basically the US is telling these countries that they can choose to either have access to the relatively tiny Iranian market or have access, to the US market and US banks companies at but it's also the the international financial system more broadly because so much of international trade and finances. Done through US banks and conducted in US dollars these things would really. Hit those countries if they try to access that. So it, would be, a huge burden to them I mean you know it's important to note That even under the past sanctions there were countries that were able to do it China and India, most notably accounted for almost forty percents of of grants oil exports during that time so so they were able to keep those deals going but I'll. I everybody else I mean it was a different atmosphere because there were. So many countries that were participating JCP away but. Everybody else, essentially went, along with the US Now we've got these this smaller. List of sanctions that has taken effect this week Is there any sign that even that has had any impact on Iran and is? Is, getting perhaps to come back.

"So I need to do more research. But this one was kind of nuts to me said the model three vehicle use the only one standard body frame down for more than eighty for model s. I didn't understand that number. What does that mean? Yeah. There must there's enough variation in the way that the model S is configured that there's eighty different versions of it. Like a right hand drive left-hand-drive. I just can't I just can't think of how there's eighty variations of model S frame. All. All the different batteries from wheel. Jan this performance performance. Is is everyone does I wouldn't think everyone of those counts of body frame though, doesn't and I don't remember noticing that many different body frames in tours? We may or may not have gone gone on a maybe understanding how they define body frame. But it seems like there's like, you know, the model S, and and there's different internal configurations. But yeah, that'd be curious. If anyone has any more detail on that. Because I don't doubt that that number. I don't I don't not claiming are things that that's like a mistake. I'm just really curious what that refers to because what happened. My head is the stampings. And I don't think there's eighty different dyes for that. So right. Like, I would. I mean what I think is like. Door version of four door version. There's like a convertible there's a sun roof and not sunroof those seem like body things. They talked about was that the wiring harness has fifty percent less mass than the average vehicle which goes to the point that there's a lot less controllers and connectors and other CPU's so because tesla has a beefy Invidia Intel CPU instead of the way most cars have lots of little micro controllers in all these other subsystems, and they sort of talked to each other through the can bus, tesla can use this more centralized, computer. And have each of the other parts be a lot dumber. So that's manifest in both less wires as well as a an easier centralized computer to upgrade or repairing case. It dies. And a little bit more sort of robust parts in the rest of the system since they don't need to have computers and software written by companies might not be the best software. And that was also one of the big things that Alon talked about on the call and Doug field. Also mentioned was that. And this sort of go to that machine. The bills them the sheen is that. Basically tesla believes that software is the fundamental. Element of being able to automate really well. And while they have had problems that they believe tesla is way better software than any other car company and that to succeeded. This you need to be really great software. So the extent you believe tesla is good. It's off wear and this is necessary. You have to then believe tesla will be the best at automation of cars. Not like self-driving, but of building them. And I guess my biggest. The biggest evidence of this from what they've shared is that many of the cases early on where they had problems with automation were with systems that they had subcontracted out and especially on the body in the battery area, and that they have now been taking over writing the software for that. And it has been getting better. But that's very limited knowledge of what they've actually shared publicly. But at least that line of of rationale is consistent with details. Shared unrelated to these statements today or undiscerning 's call, and I certainly believe that based on what we do know about robot sort of manufacturing, which is in a ton that..
