How your brain responds to stories -- and why they're crucial for leaders

"Maria walked into the elevator at work. She went to press the button when her phone fell out of her hand. It bounced on the floor and went straight down that little opening between the elevator in the floor and she realized it wasn't just her phone. It was a phone wallet that had her driver's license her credit card her whole life. She went to the front desk to talk to ray. The security guard. Ray was really happy to see air. Marie is the one of the few people that actually stocks and says hello to him each day in fact she's one of these people that knows your birthday and your favorite food and your last vacation. Not because she's weird she just genuinely likes people like some to feel seen she tells ray what happened and he said it's going to cost at least five hundred dollars to get her phone back and he goes to get a quote while she goes back to her desk twenty minutes later he calls her and he says maria i was looking at the inspection certificate elevator. It's actually do for its annual inspection next month. I'm going to go ahead and call that in today and won't be able to get your phone back in. I won't cost you anything the same day this happened. I read an article about the. Ceo of charles schwab while turbine injure he's describing his straight a career at university going into his last exam expecting ace it when the professor gives one question. What is the name of the person that cleans this room. And he failed the exam. He had seen her but he had never met her before. Her name was dottie. And he made a vow that day to always know the dadis in his life. Because both walter and maria understand this power of helping people feel seen especially as a leader. I use that story back. When i worked at general electric. I was responsible for shaping culture and a business of ninety thousand employees in one hundred fifty countries and i found that stories. Were such a great way to connect with people and have them think. What would i do in this situation. would i have known dotty or who are the dadis. I need to know in my life. I found that no matter. People's gender or their generation or their geography in the world the stories resonated and worked but in my work with leaders. I have also found. They tend be allergic to telling stories. They're not sure where to find them or they're not sure how to tell them or are they think they have to present data that there's just not room tell story and that's why i want to focus today because storytelling data is actually not this either or it's an an actually create this power that connects you to information differently to understand how we have to. I understand what happens. Neurologically when you're listening to a story and data so as you're a lecture or you're in a meeting to small parts of your brain are activated. We're an again broke his area. This is where you're processing information and it's also why you tend to forget fifty percent of it right after you hear it when you listen to a story. Your entire brain starts to light up each of your lobes will light up as your senses and your emotions are engaged as i talk about a phone falling and hitting the ground with thaad your in your temporal lobes are lighting up as though you're seeing that fall phone and hearing it hit with the side. There's this term neural coupling which says as the listener your brain will light up exactly as mine is the storyteller. It mir's this activity as though you are actually experiencing these things. Storytelling gives you this artificial reality if i talk to you about like walking through the snow and with each step. The snow is crunching under my shoes. And big wet flakes are falling on my cheeks. Your brains are now lighting up as though you are walking through the snow and experiencing these things it's why you can sit in an action movie and not be moving but your heart is racing though. You're the star on screen because this neuro a coupling has your brain lighting up. Though you were having that activity as you listened to stories you automatically gain empathy for the storyteller the more empathy. You experience the more oxytocin is released in your brain.

"You have any a hamster? Damn take! Take only covers takes I. Had I'll keep it very brief I actually thought CBS did a really good job with rahm coming down the stretch? I do want to say I think this might be unpopular opinion. I think dottie pepper better I think. She's finding a straddling more I think she's not trying to do the the standup comedy routine anymore I think it's just being very. She's. She's given a lot more. Specifics on just like. Here's the golf shot and here's how it's going to play and. I find her very like very helpful in in a lot more instances. What I did not find helpful was when they go to weather delay. and. It's I at at the time that this happened. I was just looking at photos of people forget Roger. Maltbie was the inaugural champion at the memorial tournament, so I'm just getting wistful look, and all these old cool pictures of Roger Maltbie and the cat is tournaments been around for so long. It's got so many cool winters. All, right, we're in weather delay. We're GONNA. Throw it to a replay and in my head I'm like Oh, the cats, one here one hundred sixty five times like maybe we watch who has shootout with furic one year I think right, or maybe if you're one one year. One your own out from the bunker right on eighteen or something like that Paul as and your hotel from the bunker one year, but continued anyway listen. There's a lot of cool share point. Yeah, show will remember it a lot of cool stuff. Who'd they put up. machoocher versus Kevin Chappell in two thousand, thirteen and Kyle Stan Kyle Stanley to a much lesser extent he was. He was further back to back when they cut off off the cuff. Well, he finished. He finished further back, but. I don't WanNa Watch that. Get that Shit. Get that away for me like I know. This is the opposite of what I want to watch and that speaks. I'm massively projecting I'm sorry I'm going over my hamster. Damn time here massively projecting this, but that speaks so much to me on like. Will Watch it. Yeah, like this is what you know. Couture is a good guy. Let's let's let's those two cooter solid like these these people will watch it, and no is just like all right. Let's sit around and think like what are these people wanna see right now and I would think nine out of ten households would be like. Do just show me the cats greatest hits man. Yeah, that's all I want. See just show me. Me something cool like here's truly among the most vanilla tournaments we could possibly think from the last seven years here you go enjoy, and that was immediately like all right. I'm going to turn off the TV, and like they got lucky with all turn on my alerts, and like maybe I'll come back when the coverage comes back, but like I'm not absolutely not doing this. They got lucky with the delays today. They got one delay the. Growth Thunderstorms could have hit.

Undercover Robot Interview

"Hello, this is Bertie I'm here with some big news. I've written a book. That's just been published. It's called undercover robot my first year as a human, and when I say I've written it what I really mean is that I co wrote it with my old friend, what he's not that old, but his name is David Edmonds, so let me introduce you to my collaborator and friend. David, Hi, story, Neue I am a key data old, but anyway we'll pass over that, David. Perhaps you can tell the audience a little bit about undercover robot. Well undercover Bogut is about. About a girl could dotty and dot. He's eleven years old and the thing you need to know about doc- is that she's not actually a girl. She's a robot and she's been designed by a professor Catnip, who is kind of like a dad? And if Dottie can survive for a year at school without being identified uncovered as a robot, she and professor catnip will win a huge amount of money. She lives with professors. CATNIP family who don't know that she's a robot and at school. Most people are taken in, but there's one boy, isn't there? Who's really onto her? Yes there's a guy called Martin strange. Who is trying to expose her and I should explain that it. You actually spot low Bot and identify the robot correctly you win ten thousand dollars, so people are on the lookout to see who might be global in their school. It turns out that there were five robots around the world who are trying to win this prize. And there were people trying to out them. Okay, so I haven't mentioned this yet but David. You're a philosopher onto you and you've published quite a few books. Some of them bestselling books on philosophy and book has. Has Quite a lot of philosophy in it, doesn't it? It's got a lot of philosophy quite well hidden, but the basic issue is quite philosophical, which is where a robot can actually be like a human. Is there something special about human beings that means loobox never copied them, or could really brilliantly designed and built low bought actually not only pretend to be like a human being, but to all intents and purposes be just like a human being, because dotty is very nearly like a human being, but she gets a few things wrong and Some of those things raise lots of questions. Questions in philosophy. What about Dadis first meal at the CATNIP family? How can just having SOPA raise philosophical questions we'll dottie gets into trouble very early on because she doesn't understand etiquette that you're supposed to put your knife in the light hand and the folk in the left hand least in British culture, the old thing about etiquette is that in other societies they do things differently, so it seems a bit different for morality, so for example pretty much every society people think it's wrong to murder somebody, but in different societies, people have different kinds of approaches to meals and food in some. Some societies you're supposed to burp loudly to show your appreciation. which little girl in the story does, doesn't she? The little cabinet goal does BURP and dotty Kapisa dotty copies. dotty assumes that that's what you're supposed to do. dotty can't quote workout which rules a supposed to be universal, which will supposed to apply to the whole world, and which rules exposed to apply just a maybe British society, or maybe just to the catnip household where she lives because at school there, lots and lots of rules aren't there and lots and lots of detentions it. It's a very strict school and dotty has. To navigate the school as well, but she doesn't want to be too good, because if she's good and doesn't get into any trouble. That would be suspicious. That will be like not a normal kid fact. She has a misbehavior quota, doesn't she? She's allowed to misbehave. I can't remember that eight percent of the time or twenty percent of the time we discussed it a lot, but of course she overshoots a quota quite a bit and gets into lots and lots of trouble. Yes, she also has to get what her designers programmers called friendship point she has. has to try and make friends with people in her class to show that she's capable of meaningful human interactions. There's a girl Kohana. WHO's quite a rebel who becomes her friend? But there others that she really annoys like Cindy Low, isn't there? I mean most people find quite lovable, but she can be a bit irritating sometimes. Yes, she can sometimes take it literally, which other people find really annoying. humor is sometimes be off, so she sometimes doesn't get palms, and at least the early stages. She's not very good at picking up the subtleties of human. Human Interaction and that's why she gets into so much trouble. We're not going to say everything, but it does build up to a very big climax, and some really crazy stuff starts to happen almost surreal stuff that you as a philosopher I believe. Call a thought experiment. You know if you imagined this crazy thing could happen. What would that mean to philosophy? Yes, store a few thought experiments, the something that happens when dottie is in a zoo and wild animal escapes, and it looks like it's GonNa head for and possibly injured possibly even kill a bunch. Bunch of kids and don't has to decide very quickly where we should try to strap the bear, and pointed as it were in another direction, but the problem with doing that is that it would put other people at danger. Fewer people sadate estimate this decision wherever to save thirty lights, but at the cost of paps, killing five people, and not just any five people as it happens to people she would endanger would be members of the family that she lives with

President Trump hosts Native American roundtable in Arizona

"This is national native news. I'm Antonio Gonzales. President Trump signed a proclamation acknowledging missing and murdered Indigenous People Tuesday during a visit to Arizona which included a round discussion with Navajo Nation Vice President Myron laser and his wife Dottie laser and Hilo River Indian community governor Stephen Role Lewis dotty. Liser is an advocate working on missing murdered indigenous women issues. The President M I W is a growing issue on the Navajo nation. Here's part of her comments from livestream of the meeting on C. Span with the Ashland Mike case that came up in two thousand sixteen where she was kidnapped and raped and murdered in New Mexico. May Second Two thousand sixteen. So that's kind of open the door for Navajo to start saying okay. We need to do something. Because I became the forefront and so since then the amber alert on that one nation has gotten better but still needs help with funding. Still needs help with getting the data together. The roundtable lasted about thirty minutes and included discussions about cove nineteen which has hit the Navajo nation. Hard this week. The number of positive Navajo cases exceeded two thousand five hundred tribes across the country have been waiting for federal cove. Nineteen Relief Eight. Eight billion dollars is set aside for tribes in the Cares Act. President trump commented about the funding including the amount to the Navajo nation as he joked with vice. President Liser is the single largest investment in Indian country in our history. So the amount of money that's being sent to Indian country as we call it is the largest amount in the history of the US. And you deserve. And you've been through a lot in the Navajo. Nation will soon receive over six hundred million dollars. That's a lot. Can renegotiate community door. Go up before the Hilo River Indian community is set to receive forty million dollars. Disbursement has been delayed. The Treasury Department announced Tuesday a plan to begin payments to tribes which includes holding back amounts for Alaska native corporations due to pending litigation more than a dozen tribes sued over the inclusion of Alaskan native corporations in the funding he l- River Indian community governor Steven Lewis commented about the funding at the end of the meeting urging for the immediate release of the money and also saying the eight billion dollars is woefully inadequate to meet the needs of tribes. Nothing Empire. I'm trying getting some of the money out today. I WanNa thank you. Also because we need help now Indian tribes and can't wait for that litigation to end before from the and also governor Lewis also asked for a cap to be put on the amount anyone tribe receives and to allow tribes to have flexible guidance to keep their governments running. The Treasury. Department's plan is to begin allocating sixty percent of the eight billion this week. Two tribes the president of the Rosebud Sioux tribe in South Dakota declared an immediate lockdown of community Tuesday due to Cova Nineteen President Rodney Bordeaux and a social media message declared the lockdown of the Spring Creek community due to a high exposure of covert nineteen law enforcement will be monitoring roads and no one will be allowed inner out of Spring Creek. Cam Newton, Josh Hartnett And James Corden discussed on Will Cain

"I actually did a double take when I saw the headline because I was like there must be a second meaning to this. But no, this means exactly what you think it does. When you read the headline Cam Newton informs world he has given up climaxing in March. So Cam Newton who wears weird hats, just for no reason was on James corden show the late late show last night. And he talked about how he's been giving things up month by month because he thinks it's going to test his mind make you stronger when the season comes around he'll be able to say to himself I have discipline. So know he challenged himself with reasonable things back in January eastern. I'm going to give up betting in February said, I'm going to go vegan. Now, I don't know if these things carry over to the next month or if he just for one month says I'm out on this. I gotta prove to myself, but climaxing is what he has given up for. March. He used some hand motions on the show to reveal that this is not just obstructing sexy time with the mother of his three children has long term girlfriend. But apparently any most self love as well. Yes, exactly. But he will love himself more by the end of this challenge because he'll be stronger. So thought Dottie will be. This was a Josh Hartnett movie. I listen, there's a lot of things that I've been forced to give up you know, because of diet and lifestyle changes aged. Yeah. Like I've been forced to give rest because I work every single day of the week. I have a buddy like this who give up sugar for a month or give up alcohol for a month. And then be right back at it. Everything in moderation camp. That's all I'll say brother, if you wanna, you know, happy life. Happy wife, if if the wife is cool you walking around all tilt all the time. About Gilady too. Right. No one's no one seems to be worried about her like if a woman said, I'm giving up climaxing for someone would be like the men were like, wow, what a brave soul.

"Was. She. What I was most struck by on this record is there's a kind of a looseness and almost like an irregularity with the songwriting. They're at their things that feel. Long for lack of a better way. Putting it and there was something. There was always felt like a concision to the presentation and the performance of the pistol Annie's as characters that's how it felt to me previously. And this just felt like we can do whatever we can just we keep it on Rulli. Yeah. I can definitely see looser. I just I don't really like my name chains back. I find that kinda cloying an Itis. I don't know not all the songs necessarily jibed as much like being pretty pretty such a good song. Beige is like icon. I don't know. These are like great great great things that I just feel like I don't know. They just are better for me. But I've also had more time with them. So sure we will see from performance perspective women performing on the as this landings performed Kelsey vallorini. Kelsey, Casey, Lauren Elena had like a little she had her little thing. Dottie west, right Kerry. Obviously, I think when we were writing about Casey five years ago and Miranda ten years ago. It seemed like we could feasibly awry, like go ten years without those performers ever actually truly being embraced and being invited to the party. And I wonder now, even if are they being invited in a genuine way or are they being invited largely because country music is so terrible at cultivating female talent that there's not even like a alternate choice. There's not some other direction to go like you're saying they're outside the mainstream to a degree wouldn't expect them to be embraced by the same as people. Yes. But because they're quite. Quite literally ease. No one else. Yeah. I mean, not that are there are no female singers. But there's no one with a consistent retinue of hits steady radio play. I mean Lindsey L was there Carly Pearce like whatever like there's plenty of people making interesting songs, but very few that the industry is actively supporting. Yeah. No. I mean, it certainly like all the people performing none of them are in top thirty radio right now. And you know, it's like that's to me. It's just like Hello. I think this is just becoming so so painfully obvious, and it's not like there isn't a gender disparity in every genre of music, but in country, they radio has so much power. And yet they're so unwilling to embrace the idea that they are the problem, you know, like, they're really resistant, and this is just as I know you guys have seen like this is just a central conversation. Especially right now, you know, like the fact that when women are underrepresented on country radio. And so yeah, like, you're saying these women who are sort of outsiders issue, or at least not conforming sort of the mainstream Nick of country radio like, but they're big album artists. And so they have been able to maintain their their following in their audience 'cause they're great. And they make great albums, and whatever, but it is just I dunno. It's so disheartening I was like doing more research this morning, and it's like there are actually like doctrines at radio stations. And it's like you can't play women back to back like that's like an actual rule at country radium places, you know, and it's like you might hear like one song by woman all day long. And that's just that's not normal. And it's they act. It's like, they blame it on the labels. They say the labels aren't bringing us female artists who are dropping singles. But it's like they're out there doing things and so radio blames the labels label say well radio won't play. Anyone who's? So it's like this chicken and egg thing of like everyone's passing the buck, and nobody is willing to kind of take responsibility..
