"So just to sort of set the scene. If you're not able to find any of this stuff on youtube you've got the four horsemen out there talk and trash and all the sudden dustin magnum appear in the ring and it looks like it's going to be four onto as unbelievably dusty and magnum saying yeah. We're not scared. Come on with it and all the sudden as you guys start to pull yourselves up into that ring here. On the road warriors evening the odds four and four and the crowd as pat. Patterson would say went banana and it might be your observation that they even the odds. I'm going to say at the odds went about three. Fold in their favor. My god that was you know one of the first times you know if not the first time having that association of the road warriors were dusty. Magda right yeah. I would think so. And what a what a pop. It was a major moment and wrestling. But it's getting to the horse manure at full strength. Dusty is back and you can argue. He's got a competitive advantage because he's got the loaded boot but you've taken his. Tv title so now he wants to take place. World title is great stuff man. Good storyteller it but you know at ties everybody together and the road. Warriors were unknown quantity at that point. You're back in philly at sold out and of course we've seen a pretty special moment and wrestling in more recent weeks but that road warrior. Pop was a real thing. What was it like here. November of eighty five six man. Yes sir i'll never forget it. People asri all the time. What is the the strongest reaction or the biggest reaction that you ever remember in a. You know for a show anywhere. No comparison The road warriors painted dusty up road warrior paint. We were in the rain. And when that road warrior music hit in philadelphia who else are bloodthirsty bunch and that door flew open and dusty and the road. Warriors started down that. I'll never heard anything like it. It was unbelievable. The chill bumps that i got watching my death. You know miles down the hall. I should have had a different reaction for that. I should have just ran. Rockaway tremendous but standing in that raining watching those guys come down the aisle and it would. It was only myself and totally right. That's odd it. Was rick oli recovering. Yeah so as they got almost there he he looked at me what you wanna do and i said i'm getting the hell out of here about you. And we bailed. We gave them the rain and that place went ballistic. And what proceeded to happen. Probably over the next twenty minutes is the three of us took at least two full rounds of ass weapons by every one of those guys and the audience never sat down. They never stopped screaming. We never. I don't think we ever slowed them down that night. Which was the thing to do. And they just dominated a kicked our ass s what that audience paid to see. And that's what they got. We got routed for lack of a better word. I think the match you're thinking of when he said totally was the next time because you did a six man on top again. The next night But rick had to go wrestle somewhere else that nine. So you're in you're in baltimore. It's dusty in the road. Warriors on the twenty four. th of november only aren't entirely It is a bunk house match. Road is gonna pinole and eight minutes and fourteen seconds. "The next as we mentioned you're in columbia. And you're in the main event it's going to be dusty magnum and manny taken on Tully oli and orne on the twelfth. They're running shows. In wheeling west virginia on the thirteenth two shows one in oxford alabama. But that's really a continental show just Flare taken it on brad armstrong but we have jcp show at the field house in williamson. West virginia on the fourteenth were in columbus georgia. And then we're doing. Tv again on the fifteenth in atlanta Later that night on the fifteenth there are three shows. of course. we're going to have a matinee squeezed in there but college park. Georgia is gonna see ron garvin and black bart on top Norfolk virginia is going to see dusty. Magnum sam houston taken on totally only and orange once again a bunk house match. And in pensacola florida. A jcp promoted show with the rock and roll versus the midnights on that same card magnum on that same card with telly. Even the road. Warriors working with the russians the main event as flare versus dusty. And pensacola show is loaded for bear but strangely there's only two thousand folks there do you think. The pensacola market was softening. Is september a bad month in that era. Was there not adequate promotion. Why do you think that show would only have two thousand folks there with that loaded of a card. Wow what was the. What was the middle show So you had three shows that they on the fifteenth one in college. Park georgia one. In norfolk virginia But then the big show to me is pensacola florida it's buddy landale over sam. Houston manny fernandez. Over crusher khrushchev brad. Steve armstrong over a aren't and only the cue jimmy value in there with the barbarian. The rock and roll's are going to beat the midnight express. Tommy rich is going to defeat. Adrian street magnum. Ta is going to go to a double count out. Telly blanchard the road. They just relied on the cable One thing i tell you something that is a very real thing and people may use it as a cop out. But i know it's real 'cause i've been around forty years school. Because i feel like sometimes people think all that's an excuse because brutal sometimes say well. The gas station opened. But you gotta appreciate. This is a socio economically. Depressed area The median income household income is not exactly what you might imagine and when kids go back to school. It's not just a matter of oh they can't get down there now. The can't afford to take the kids. Because you've got all these new fees you gotta pay for the kids football helmet. You gotta pay for him. Some new books. You gotta pay for him. Some new shoes you got to pay from new clothes and if you've got a whole litter of those little rugrats got all that going plus you got lunch money etc etc so there's a lot of newfound expenses whenever kids will go back to school and you know maybe that ten dollars on wrestling just didn't quite check all the boxes that you needed to that month. Well that and the fact that Jim crockett promotions was a hot commodity. That time we were. We're we're flaming up right. Shaw betcha the ticket prices were very high. That's another negative plus the fact that all those years prior to that continental had ran pensacola every single sunday so it had been ran a lot prior to getting there so it probably feels like well. I'll just see them next week. Yeah i mean all these guys. We can't afford to pay those. Jim crockett promotions. But our guys who were familiar with anyway. We'll be back next sunday so we'll just go to that show. They could all be reasons that two thousand people. That's that's not not much and i bet you. The rent on that. Civic center was not cheap fable. North carolina is where you're at the very next day on september sixteenth. Think about that. You're going from pensacola to fayetteville one. Day later once again going to be a bunk house match dusty magnum and sam on one side totally aren't on the other on the eighteenth. You're gonna be wrestling the rock and roll express along with your partner only to draw at the dorton arena On the twentieth. You're going to be in singles action against terry taylor. What are you. Remember your first impressions being of a young terry taylor here. A lot of people thinking this era. He was trying to for lack of a better word. Do his best ric flair impression and he will no way to dispute that but he did it from a perspective. I think idolize mayor it wasn't trying to be a cheap copy. He he analyzed wreck and he copied. Rick he just took it to an extent of everything from the robe. You know to a little bit of the And all you know some of the things he did during his match figures it was to pay tribute to rick. But terry was when terry was being terry. He was a very good upper middle baby face. That had good skills was a handsome guy. You know Gear always looked top-shelf tan. And all those things that you can do to to make yourself look like a bigger star and he had really good baby face skills so he was a guy that you figured you wanted on his own your card to be that upper middle guy that could put your top guys over and It would benefit both guys if it was competitive match and terry at a pretty good career as far as wrestling your lasted for. I don't know how many years has had a pretty good run. I think this is one of the first singles matches you guys would have had wrestled each other in tag matches but it feels like the promotion had to be pretty high on him here because not only..

A family owned wrestling promotion as two brothers wore over control of the league and their late. Father's legacy ace and jack spades rivalry both and out of the ring is the main event brother versus brother hero versus. He'll even see -em punk aesthetic back onto the mat for cameo alexander. Ludwig plays a spade the beloved hero young hotshot and the star of the duffy wrestling league outside the ring a struggles to reconcile his idol status with this habit for self destruction. Stephen a male plays his brother in league. He'll jack spade is hardworking. Proprietor husband and father is trying to breathe new life into the wwl. That's where you would find only aren't taking on a flare and magnum or not flare but dusty and magnum and on the ninth The that same day. They're running augusta georgia. And how about this for main of black bart versus ron garvin I think i would have rather been in. Greenville disrespect. But i'm glad i was I wanna mention the the interesting thing about the show in greenville. Check this out The barbarian versus starship eagle. Who we know. Is dan spivey. Terry taylor joel deaton sam houston and abdul the butcher poor sam And then the rock and roll express versus the midnight express to a forty five minute time limit. Draw right after that it's Dusty and magnum taken only an arm and then in the main event. How about this for a rare match. The world champion. Ric flair against the united states. Champion totally blanchard. I know we're right around the corner from the horsemen but that's an interesting matchup. And your main and co main event. He got the whole band. Represented all of the horsemen. America's team. it starts to feel like all right. We've got our players here. In september of eighty five. At least to me. You said flair versus totally. Yeah well that is random he'll versus. He'll on top And of course we know you know. Eventually we're going to get things back together. But i would have never guessed. That was a match that would have happened in eighty five but here it is well at and at that time without us having a history really together other than just some some random tags and stuff there was no big relationship with flair. I guess but it's also such a rare match that also looking at it now in hindsight and knowing the history that came after an and with the horsemen deal It just seems like that's a match. You would wanna built for six weeks and made a really big deal out of it you know. But they were all hindsight's twenty twenty and it was a random match. I'm sure they tore the joint down. I'm sure the world champion prevailed and certainly didn't hurt totally blanchard at the shelby rick center. I think we're going to do something. pretty big. We've got three crews running or so it seems dorton arena on september first greensboro north carolina on september first and the omni on september first. These are three pretty good sized buildings and my goodness look at how the business has expanded you find yourself on the omni card teaming with only take on dusty and magnum the main event that night is ric flair and the coal off in a lumberjack match. Rick and the key also worked at the door. Marina which i would assume would be a matinee show but man tv in atlanta live event in raleigh lava vent in greensboro la event in atlanta. The same freaking day This power of the superstation. I would say it's working. What say you. Yeah i guess so. I mean it's it's almost unfathomable that that can happen logistically. But it means you know guys serious travel Whether it's worked the first match of run to the airport to catch flight or whatever the deal may be it. It seemed logistically impossible but apparently it was cussing all happened as far as you know in this era. Who's helping sort of steer the ship for the details the particulars if you will is it. Did you ever preference you know. I know once upon a time in the wwf. There was sort of a town and a b. town. And if you weren't sure which card you were on the eighteen was the one with hulk hogan if you're on the other card well by process of a nation you're on the b. card. You're going to draw either town and just depending on got to play. You know if you got to pay flair and dusty that's champion and that's your top baby face and that was a big payoff in If you were the main event in the other town the town you did pretty well too. I to you know the last two matches so it was. It wasn't a bad deal to be an either of the two really. You're hanging out with some friends and putting back a few drinks and a few becomes a few too many as the evening comes to an end when people start to head out. A couple of days later you're back in greenville at the memorial auditorium. This time working with rocky. King you find yourself on april tenth taken on manny fernandez. Back at the dorton arena. It's a double shot cannaday though. Because you're also in pittsburgh working with sam houston and sam houston and eighty five is He's still a little wet behind the ears. Shall we say. But he's coming into his own fans are with him. He's a typical white meat. Baby face the girls are all about him and it felt like a year later he was going to be poised for a big big push put. Eventually he mary's baby doll and has run with the wwf. And i think a lot of people look at sam houston now in hindsight and say man what could have been. Let's say you made. Sam was to deny that he was a very good baby face and he sold well and had a lot of baby face skills you just look at him and he looked young in the face because he was young in those days. When you had guys like that. And you had you know the brad armstrong's and the tim horner's and and all those guys work in those underneath spots but were very talented. You know you could give those guys a win or two on tv and man. They were golden they were set and it always made a good opponent on television And when those guys would upset like a middle of the card guy they went from being an underneath guy to a middle guy just like that click boom and sam was one of those guys he was you know. He sold really well and he pulled the audience into the fact that. Hey this guy's getting his ass kicked we might cheer for him or this going to be over pretty quick and that was you know pretty much the mentality of of young baby faces. They wanted they should make the audience won't to cheer to assist them in what was going on because they're getting there has handed to him. Let's let's talk about your next bow here. Stafford senior high school. That's real fredericksburg. Virginia april eleventh. You manning are to go to a double count out. You're going to be at the scope in norfolk on the next day. The twelfth. you're gonna fight manny fernandez to a no contest. You working with manny lot. I'm sure you're getting Somewhat of a routine together who was typically calling the matches. Did you have different styles of matches that you would do. I mean we've heard. Sometimes where i think jim ross a few weeks ago on grilling jr heard terry funk and harley race talking and he said something like hey. Are we going to do the saint louis finish or the florida finish and then we've even heard On some of the ladder matches. That would happen on how shows where guys would say things like. Hey are they getting the match. The b match or the c. Match did you have some sort of a formula that you and manny would rely on. Put together your matches. When you're working so often i don't think we were that advanced and it worked enough to actually have an a. b. or c. match. But after you've worked with a guy you know back in those days ten twelve fifteen times in a lot of those were days in a row. You would just have a little bit of a routine down to the point. That if that if i grabbed you in a headlock and i said hey dropped down twice back you know. Seven eight nine weeks after about that ninth week. When i grabbed that headlock. You knew what we're doing because of where it was in the match you knew it was. I didn't have to call the whole thing. That makes sense. If you know we were just in a spot that you know. Maybe i had grabbed an arm to start often he reversed our versus back and took him down by the hair and he nipped up and gave me a big. Maybe that was the lead in spot to that matched bigger spot. So we did that. He knew without me said a word where we were in the match and we just continued on with our routine. Now a lotta times. Something would happen. Maybe they wouldn't react to the backhand or they would really react to the backhand just on the fly. You would just switch it up because you got a different reaction for what you were shooting for or expected it was still conrad i. It's it's always ban that when the businesses at its best. It's an ad lib situation where you're really just go on out there and rocking back and forth and fighting and whatever guy gives you you take advantage of it and vice versa. And that's when the business was really the best you know. There was an ongoing conversation. Ever in any match. That was in because it. Just if you're talking that much then you're not really listening to the audience and that's the key. Things are really heating up here in april because not only do we have a hot issue with you and manny but now thunderball and only who again are the. Nwea national tag team champions. They won those belts back in january of eighty five But now here we've just seen orne in a little bit of a situation with thunderbolt and only has to decide. Am i going to bail out my tag team partner or am i going to bail out my blood. And he goes with blood and we continue that story when we do a television taping The worldwide show on april thirteenth of eighty five is going to have an opening segment where you've got like a dozen wrestlers. It's a tv taping for worldwide and they ran a little promotion there where the first five hundred fans in attendance received a free t shirt new probably needed one of those. Because you're working double duty here. You're gonna team with buddy landale to take on same houston danny brown. Of course you guys are on the a side of that one. But then there's a dark match with you and manny fernandez and man you and manny our heating up in a hurry and you know the thing about that. Dark match served a lot of purposes you could announce it to the public as something that they could be sure they were gonna get in those days they got it and it would be considered a main event and you know may just getting there getting put in that spot it from a positioning. It made you look like oh okay. They are going to go with sky. And you know man. I clicked pretty pretty quickly and that became a thing for for a while. Yeah for a while indeed. The next day you're in raleigh at dorton arena and once again working with manny. You pick up the win there. The following day. You're off a rare off-day but on april fifth. You're once again. Working with manny fernandez. This time to a no contest in columbia south carolina. You're at township auditorium. We've spoken a little bit about dorton arena and how much i love the arena. In how cool it looks. But tony shirvani just said it was hot and it was a dump and it was measurable Did you have any favorite buildings in the crockett territory. A building in particular. Where you just knew. I like the town i like the arena. I like the people like the accommodations. Any of that. stick out. Well they usually go to were the ones that were close. You know charlotte obviously grange borough. All those that were close. Columbia was one that that i favored because of the way it was built. You know it was one of those arenas that you know it was like built almost straight up lack. The seats in the upper deck. Were like almost over the rain and that was a cool environment. Loved richmond because you know that was a big arena here for big shows and held a lot of people. Lot of lot of great buildings Acoustics were always a good thing if you were an arena. That had some really good acoustics and everything sounded loud and you know because the noise go straight up there was. There was a slight delay so when it was a full it was just a funky atmosphere. But you know some of the crock in those days especially when we first got their business was not the best yet so they would opt to go to smaller arenas especially for television and for me. I like to sweat anyway sweater. I'm one of those guys. That loves to sweat. When i wanna sweat but i can't stand it when i don't obey. You're one of those guys. Oh yeah so you know being on that. Tv and having a good sweat going it was just conducive. And and you know i think the fans even you know for those towns once they gotta sweat and they looked around and realized they were soaked. Dan hey what are you going to do about it. Let's go ahead and have a good time so it made for great atmosphere wanna mention Tv the next day april sixth year at the wcbs studios and It's interesting because this is the very first episode that is promoted by jim. I developed a friendship of sorts with ric flair over the course of this year and a half every time he would come to town. Which we've discussed. I would drive him around for the week which was an honored job. The world champion. Take him the jam. Pick him up. Take him the town bring him back next day. Start over again and He had Been very generous. And the way he viewed my work he said. Can you gotta make some money. But i gotta get into charlotte and right now jimmy. Crockett is looking at the other territories because best mcmahon is plotting a takeover. I don't know if you know about it or not. But he's he is assembling an all star team and so jimmy. Crockett has sent me out. And the places that i'm working. He wants me to keep an eye out for special talent and talent they can help charlotte and were places fixing to take off. You're gonna wanna you've been here for a long time right. And i said you know even recognized year and a half for for heels unheard of those days should we won't you you know so i go around that. He hit me with that us. I'm not going nowhere in. I'm making enough to live like a king long as i don't buy nothing And i'm living on the beach. And met at a young lady and all those things that that entails and the second go round. He said you know you need to go. I can make some money. So i agreed we set up starting day which i was going to meet with them on march the fifth so i worked at notice whatever it was two or three weeks I wanna make sure that. I did everything that i could for You know southeastern continental. Which whatever you wanna call it before i left. I wanna work notice because in those days.
